12:14 AM Bleepshop: Well, I found a manual and I've been annoying it till it seems to work. At least I've got blinky lights in response to axis tests in stepconf. https://www.submarineboat.com/files/Break_Out_Board_Sound_Logic_user_guide-1-8.pdf
12:20 AM Bleepshop: candyonetoo: The X and Y/Y steppers are Nema 34 and look like a third of a Foster's oilcan [the BIG beer]. LOL
12:20 AM Bleepshop: Crap. Got to get my glasses if I'm going to use nick completion.
01:30 AM mrec: 7join ##engineering
02:18 AM bjorkintosh: all 7?
02:43 AM Deejay: moin
04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
05:49 AM miss0r: morning. Tom_L: The saga continues
05:51 AM miss0r: Tom_L: The part I wrecked yesterday, I decided to skim the surface, and thin out the outside wall a bit, and then reuse the part. That would clean up the finish. But as luck would have it(I've had none of that lately) the part lifted out of the 3-jaw while doing the lightest passes. I have no clue, everything was tight, and it was set against the parallels ect. it is now 0.5mm out of sync. The level in the bottom
05:51 AM miss0r: is off and the outside walls are visibly not the same thickness from one side to the other. So I guess I *DO* have to make a new one from scratch
05:52 AM miss0r: Theres a saying in danish that says: "Af skade bliver man klogere" which roughly translates to "damage/loss makes you smarter/more vise" if that statement is true, I should be just about the smartest man alive by now.. :D
06:23 AM JT-Cave: morning
09:04 AM roycroft: hello
09:04 AM * roycroft is getting ready to go to work
09:43 AM mrec: can anyone give me a hint how to run an external command eg. for setting the spindle speed?
09:51 AM gloops: external?
09:56 AM JT-Shop: M100
10:15 AM mrec: I have interfaced the potentiometer of my spindle, also the frequency counter
10:15 AM mrec: I can control the speed via rs232 now
10:33 AM mrec: I guess I will have to write a driver for this no?
10:33 AM mrec: something like mitsub_vfd.py
10:46 AM mrec: ah I'll modify hy_gt_vfd.c to talk with the unit
01:58 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: cutting a special bolt that holds the bar on the bending brake.
01:58 PM Loetmichel: not a standard part.
01:58 PM Loetmichel: meaning i now have to make a new one because buying is out of the question, chinese tool, no spare parts aviable.
01:58 PM XXCoder: geez gonna love nonstandards
01:59 PM Loetmichel: that one sawcut will likely cost more than the whole bending brake
01:59 PM Tom_L: maybe he learned his lesson?
01:59 PM Loetmichel: want angered me wasnt the fact that he destroyed the thread. Happens. But that he instead of asking me what to do decided to destroy the rest of the tool as well
02:00 PM Loetmichel: probably yes, considering how "i met a ghost" he looked when i got angry and chided him
02:02 PM XXCoder: hope so. little things can be unexpectly expensive
02:02 PM XXCoder: like rear quarter panel windows on cars. ouch
03:18 PM XXCoder: https://i.redd.it/fallfyxh94o61.jpg
03:18 PM XXCoder: that stock picture makes me cry
03:18 PM XXCoder: so many problems
03:22 PM Rab: What? He's got his hardhat on.
03:23 PM XXCoder: no safety squint
03:23 PM XXCoder: equipment is *very* rusty
03:23 PM XXCoder: key still inserted
03:23 PM gregcnc: this would make a fun video
03:23 PM Rab: Those silk pyjamas will tear cleanly away when they catch in the spindle.
03:24 PM rs[m]: is this a drill with a morse taper in a drill chuck?
03:24 PM Rab: rs[m], HAHA
03:24 PM XXCoder: yeah think so lol
03:38 PM XXCoder: other duh thing
03:38 PM XXCoder: part isnt secure
03:51 PM JT-Shop: and you know that is not a real situation...
03:51 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: why is this the latest version online? http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.4/html/index.html
04:00 PM gregcnc: http://linuxcnc.org/documents/
04:00 PM CaptHindsight: ah, they changed the structure
04:01 PM CaptHindsight: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/
04:01 PM JT-Shop: one thing for sure if you over bend a piece of 1 1/2" square tubing you can't unbend it...
04:02 PM CaptHindsight: sure you can, it just won't look pretty
04:02 PM JT-Shop: all the docs back to 2.0 are on line
04:02 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: i know, but its still cringyworthy lol
04:03 PM JT-Shop: Junior is coming up to the machine shop and if I step out it just stands there and waits for some corn
04:03 PM XXCoder: :)
04:03 PM * JT-Shop goes to weld a bit...
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: odd that Google tends to return search results for older versions of docs
04:04 PM XXCoder: more visited gistory i guess
04:05 PM JT-Shop: I wish we had docs like Python with a version drop down up top... I wonder how that's done
04:06 PM XXCoder: scripts im pretty sure
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: the docs structure has changed a little, just modifying the version in the URL often gets a 404
04:06 PM JT-Shop: https://docs.python.org/3/
04:06 PM JT-Shop: like that
04:06 PM XXCoder: yep its script
04:06 PM XXCoder: had to enable javascript to see droplist
04:07 PM XXCoder: you can try right click that area and "see source"
04:07 PM JT-Shop: yea that shows the whole page source
04:08 PM JT-Shop: src="_static/documentation_options.js">
04:08 PM JT-Shop: might be that dunno
04:08 PM XXCoder: maybe
04:08 PM JT-Shop: off to the other shop
04:24 PM JT-Shop: well crumb the only piece of 11ga I have big enough for the pneumatics panel is a half sheet... not dragging that out tonight
04:26 PM robotustra: https://i.imgur.com/cpZnwuX.png
04:29 PM robotustra: https://i.imgur.com/10vwokk.png
04:30 PM robotustra: some progress
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: robotustra: what are you working on?
04:31 PM robotustra: cad
04:32 PM robotustra: text based mini cad
04:33 PM XXCoder: oh yes. no wonder i was wondering on random shapes
04:34 PM robotustra: this was just a test for dots lines and contours
04:34 PM robotustra: solids to come may be in some time
04:36 PM robotustra: well
04:37 PM robotustra: XXCoder, not so random shapes: https://i.imgur.com/RaCjwpJ.png
04:37 PM XXCoder: made with your cad? nice
04:38 PM XXCoder: poseable?
04:38 PM robotustra: not yet, but it can already load STL models and place them at right position
04:38 PM XXCoder: nice
04:39 PM robotustra: I'm working on making STL in my cad
04:39 PM XXCoder: wonder if you can make it so you can select a surface and "align and make joint" with other selected surface
04:40 PM robotustra: possibly, but it's not the primary task yet.
04:41 PM XXCoder: cool :)
04:41 PM robotustra: also some play with parameters of the model
04:41 PM robotustra: https://youtu.be/quFF6gOt5A8
04:41 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, how's the conversion going?
04:42 PM XXCoder: interesting
04:46 PM roycroft: i am finally back from work
04:47 PM roycroft: and too tired to want to go work on the blasting cabinet
04:47 PM roycroft: but i'll probably do so anyway
04:47 PM roycroft: my boss took the ladder out of the data center
04:47 PM roycroft: the ladder that's been there for as long as we've used the facility
04:48 PM roycroft: i called him and asked him why and he said "you don't need it any more - we're moving out"
04:48 PM roycroft: except i needed it to move out
04:48 PM roycroft: i made a pile out of some servers and stood on that to reach the overhead cables, and i think i damaged some of the servers by standing on them
04:49 PM roycroft: oh well
04:49 PM Tom_L: you're moving out anyway
04:49 PM robotustra: roycroft, I would suggest to pass IQ test to your boss
04:50 PM roycroft: it must be really interesting to live in such a fog
04:50 PM roycroft: one of my coworkwers was at the office today when i was bringing some equipment there
04:50 PM roycroft: she told me that my boss ordered her to remove her mask when she is in the office
04:51 PM roycroft: she refused
04:51 PM roycroft: then he told her she really drank the kool-aid
04:51 PM roycroft: and when he found out she had been vaccinated, he asked her if she was worried about the bill gates biochips that were in the vaccine doses
04:51 PM roycroft: he actually asked her that
04:52 PM roycroft: and he was not joking
04:52 PM gregcnc: perfect
04:52 PM gregcnc: the plan is working
04:53 PM roycroft: i don't know how it's possible to have graduated from an accredited college and think there could be biochips in a vaccine
04:53 PM roycroft: anyway
04:53 PM Tom_L: they didn't do their job aparently
04:53 PM roycroft: i'm not sure, but i may be more mentally exhausted than physically exhausted after work today
04:53 PM XXCoder: roy we have anti-science brain sugeron try to run as president
04:53 PM roycroft: that conversation with my coworker made me even more concerned about him than ever
04:54 PM gregcnc: see somethign say something
04:54 PM XXCoder: some people just somehow seperate areas and ignore logical seperate
04:54 PM XXCoder: *logical conflicts
04:56 PM robotustra: part of people die from virus, some part of information
04:57 PM roycroft: i might save the blasting cabinet work for tomorrow
04:57 PM roycroft: it's not going to be fun at all
04:57 PM roycroft: but maybe, since i'm already miserable, i should just go ahead and become even more miserable :)
04:58 PM robotustra: punch the bottom!
04:58 PM XXCoder: careful thats self-feeding heh
05:02 PM XXCoder: roy i'd state that mask is to protect others, except that moronic boss would probably kick out
05:02 PM gregcnc: is there anyone left in florida or texas?
05:02 PM Tom_L: why wouldn't there be?
05:03 PM gregcnc: well you can't get those people to mask up?
05:03 PM Tom_L: Ga is just as bad
05:03 PM gregcnc: the gov doesn't even require it
05:03 PM Tom_L: we're starting to open things up here but the numbers are low
05:03 PM XXCoder: texas is 100% open now
05:04 PM XXCoder: wa here is starting phase 3
05:04 PM gregcnc: our guy in IL just keep moving the goalposts
05:05 PM Tom_L: i think we're ahead on vaccines too
05:06 PM gregcnc: they're fumbling that here it seems
05:06 PM robotustra: illigal immigrants can close texas again soon
05:06 PM gregcnc: I don't think you can call them illegal any longer
05:06 PM robotustra: illegal*
05:06 PM robotustra: news call them so
05:07 PM gregcnc: news can do whatever they want
05:07 PM robotustra: but yes, become legal, and spread virus
05:07 PM robotustra: sit on the bus, go to NY
05:07 PM gregcnc: they don't even check them
05:08 PM roycroft: it's illegal to be in an office building without a mask in oregon
05:08 PM gregcnc: that's cool
05:08 PM roycroft: my boss ordered my coworker to break the law
05:08 PM roycroft: and he cannot do that
05:08 PM robotustra: I think they check, because they know the statistics, 5-50% are positive
05:08 PM XXCoder: if you had video could show them can get boss to go to jail
05:09 PM roycroft: "illegal" is an adjective, not a noun
05:13 PM XXCoder: great if you really hate that boss
05:13 PM roycroft: it has never been a noun
05:13 PM gregcnc: more see something
05:13 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, slow waiting on components
05:13 PM Tom_L: still??
05:13 PM roycroft: i don't hate my boss
05:13 PM roycroft: i'm just tired of his crap
05:13 PM * roycroft was raised to not hate anyone
05:13 PM robotustra: roycroft, don't lie to yourself
05:13 PM robotustra: it's destructive
05:13 PM roycroft: i don't lie to myself
05:13 PM roycroft: telling lies is too much work
05:13 PM robotustra: you hate him
05:13 PM bjorkintosh: why not?
05:13 PM JT-Shop: hate is a waste of time
05:13 PM roycroft: no, i really don't hate him
05:13 PM roycroft: or anyone
05:13 PM roycroft: i don't like him
05:13 PM roycroft: but that doesn't mean i hate him
05:13 PM roycroft: it is a waste of time, jt-shop
05:13 PM Tom_L: you wouldn't have him over for drinks?
05:13 PM roycroft: he claims to be "allergic to alcohol"
05:13 PM roycroft: and has let me know many tiems what he thinks of my consuming alcohol and home brewing
05:13 PM roycroft: so no, i don't think i'd have him over for drinks :)
05:13 PM XXCoder: roy its possible, but very rare. doubt your boss is that
05:13 PM roycroft: most people who say they are "allergic to alcohol" are recovering alcoholics
05:13 PM XXCoder: in those very rare cases, alchol dont convert to sugar but rather to rather potent drug
05:13 PM JT-Shop: I also don't judge people for their practices
05:13 PM roycroft: i don't know the case with my boss
05:15 PM roycroft: alcohol definitely exacerbates dehydration problems
05:15 PM gregcnc: my FIL has much better conspiracy theories than that, but he stopped talking to me because I didn't believe him?
05:15 PM XXCoder: FIL?
05:16 PM gregcnc: father in law
05:16 PM XXCoder: its sad that my uncle slowly turned qanon
05:16 PM roycroft: honestly, the child sex ring in the non-existent pizzaria basement is a more credible conspiracy theory than the bill gates biochips in the vaccine one
05:16 PM XXCoder: and more and more racist
05:16 PM XXCoder: in least he didnt go to capital
05:16 PM XXCoder: but OI have stopped talking with him that day
05:17 PM robotustra: pity that US is in trouble
05:17 PM gregcnc: so how to fix this division in the people?
05:17 PM roycroft: i think we start with more walking away
05:17 PM XXCoder: foremost, education
05:17 PM robotustra: nobody really knows
05:18 PM roycroft: xxcoder: my boss and his wife both are college graduates
05:18 PM gregcnc: how will completely dividing reunite?
05:18 PM roycroft: education is obviously not the answer
05:18 PM XXCoder: yeah, still need more education. logicial and critical thinking skills
05:18 PM XXCoder: not just rote learning
05:19 PM JT-Shop: the mind is an amazing and complex thing
05:19 PM roycroft: i'm too weary to get into this now
05:19 PM robotustra: colledge graduates of which year?
05:19 PM roycroft: but being more neighborly is an important part of it
05:19 PM roycroft: we won't be able to heal the divide if we don't talk to people on the other side of the divide
05:19 PM * JT-Shop doesn't think college graduates have any more common sense than hicks
05:20 PM roycroft: turning to social media to find people who believe as you do is not a good way to understand people who believe differently
05:20 PM gregcnc: neither is walking away
05:20 PM roycroft: but that's as far as i have the energy to discuss right now
05:20 PM roycroft: walking away lets things simmah down a bit
05:20 PM roycroft: it doesn't fix things
05:21 PM roycroft: but it can help keep things from getting worse
05:21 PM JT-Shop: yeah I'm believe and practice what you want just don't try and convert me and we can be friends
05:22 PM XXCoder: by education i dont mean college
05:22 PM XXCoder: i mean primary to high school.
05:22 PM XXCoder: more logical thinking classes, more critical thinking
05:22 PM XXCoder: so people have tools to evaluate statements
05:22 PM gregcnc: it's going the other way for a long time
05:22 PM robotustra: the thing which can unite people is a mutual respect and common projects
05:22 PM XXCoder: yep budget cuts. so much cuts
05:23 PM XXCoder: southeast usa being worse on eduction budget cuts :(
05:23 PM XXCoder: but it happened everywhere
05:23 PM * JT-Shop dropped out of high school due do boredom
05:23 PM robotustra: and if there are some common projects in US, but I don't see mutual respect between people
05:23 PM XXCoder: yeah thats fine, school isnt for everyone
05:24 PM XXCoder: my dad left high school to join navy
05:24 PM XXCoder: for ww2
05:24 PM JT-Shop: I remember
05:24 PM XXCoder: but he got caught and got honorably discarged
05:24 PM XXCoder: fun
05:43 PM veegee: Any thoughts on Ubuntu core?
05:43 PM veegee: Obviously not going to ask on #ubuntu lol
05:43 PM veegee: This is for raspberry pi
06:28 PM roycroft: i use raspbian on rpis
06:29 PM roycroft: it's pretty much stock debian, with some rpi-specific drivers
06:29 PM roycroft: i've never seen the point to the existence of ubuntu
06:29 PM XXCoder: ubuntu was the shit back then
06:29 PM XXCoder: best linux system ever
06:30 PM roycroft: ubuntu is just debian with a twist
06:32 PM roycroft: from my perspective, the only real advantage of ubuntu over stock debian is that the ubuntu folks are not as anal about segregating "free" software from "non-free" software
06:32 PM roycroft: that's actually a big difference in my eyes
06:33 PM roycroft: but it's not enough for me to see the point of ubuntu's having branched off from debian
06:33 PM XXCoder: yeah though it enabled lot of people to use ubuntu
06:33 PM XXCoder: like me
06:33 PM XXCoder: i used it for couple years, stopped when it went from brown to purple
06:34 PM XXCoder: thankfully before that ugly unity thing
06:34 PM roycroft: i've given up on dismantling the blasting cabinet
06:34 PM roycroft: i just spent a bunch of time out in the fabrication shop, and all i managed to accomplish was getting dirty
06:34 PM XXCoder: what went wrong?
06:35 PM roycroft: i'm trying to dismantle it to refurbish it
06:35 PM roycroft: the upper cabinet is bolted to the lower funnel-shaped media holder
06:35 PM roycroft: the bolt heads are inside the cabinet
06:35 PM roycroft: and after 20+ years of using the thing, the bolt heads are so "blasted" that no screwdriver will fit the heads
06:36 PM roycroft: the heads are just too worn away
06:36 PM XXCoder: can always go weld it on method
06:36 PM XXCoder: weld rod to it and other end have bolt hex cut
06:36 PM roycroft: i'm going to go in with a cutoff wheel and see if i can cut the nuts off
06:36 PM XXCoder: then you can turn it
06:36 PM roycroft: welding it would require crawling inside the cabinet
06:36 PM roycroft: the cutoff wheel i can use from the outside
06:37 PM roycroft: i was trying to figure out a better way to reassemble it so i won't have this problem again
06:38 PM roycroft: but if i need to dismantle it again in another 20 years, i'll just get a new one
06:38 PM roycroft: i doubt i'll be using it that much longer though
06:38 PM XXCoder: hmm could always cover it in termosplastic
06:38 PM roycroft: maybe another 10 years
06:38 PM XXCoder: so you can melt it off when you need to remove bolts again
06:38 PM XXCoder: and it'd be basically immune to blasting
06:38 PM roycroft: i thought that squirting a dab of silicone sealant over each bolt head would protect them
06:38 PM roycroft: and would be pretty easy to remove later
06:39 PM roycroft: but i think i'll probably not worry about it
06:39 PM roycroft: just install new bolts and be done with it
06:39 PM XXCoder: that seems easier if it can stay on
06:39 PM roycroft: it really has lasted 20+ years
06:39 PM roycroft: and if i weren't doing significant upgrades to it, i'd have no reason to split it apart now
06:40 PM * roycroft decides to go back out and see if he can accomplish in 5 minutes with a cutoff wheel what he struggled and failed to accomplish in about 3 hours with a screw gun
07:29 PM roycroft: well, that took more like te minutes than five, but that's ok
07:29 PM roycroft: it is split!
07:29 PM roycroft: actually, into three sections, not the two i thought
07:30 PM roycroft: but that's a good thing - it means a quick redesign, but it will be better
07:30 PM roycroft: as in more recycled bits and fewer new bits
07:33 PM XXCoder: nice!
07:47 PM enleth: roycroft: an impact screwdriver might have been able to help, too
07:47 PM enleth: those things can move screws that look beyond hope
07:48 PM enleth: as in, a hammer-operated manual one, not a power tool
07:48 PM roycroft: i was using an impact screwgun
07:48 PM roycroft: there was just nothing to grab onto
07:48 PM roycroft: but the cutoff wheel did the job
07:48 PM roycroft: i have a really nice air impact screw remover
07:49 PM roycroft: it's essentially a screw big holder with a handle to turn it manually that fits into an air chisel
07:49 PM roycroft: made by snap-on
07:49 PM roycroft: screw bit, not screw big
07:49 PM roycroft: that thing has saved me more times than i can count
07:50 PM roycroft: but i'd not have been able to get it into the blasting cabinet
07:50 PM enleth: so it does axial impact, not angular?
07:51 PM roycroft: yes
07:51 PM roycroft: the air tool does
07:51 PM roycroft: which is its beauty
07:52 PM roycroft: i do the angular movement with the handle that's attached to the holder
07:52 PM roycroft: i've had it for decades - i'm trying to find it online so i can show pic, but not finding anything right now
07:52 PM roycroft: they may not make it any more
07:53 PM enleth: never seen one like this, seems like a good idea
07:53 PM roycroft: https://pinosuss.host/products/shake-n-break-air-impact-screw-remover
07:53 PM roycroft: there
07:53 PM roycroft: it's very much like that
07:53 PM enleth: this is what I'm using, saved the day a few times already: https://www.bahco.com/int_en/5-16--impact-screwdriver-bits-with-1-2--square-drive-125-mm-pb_5521_.html
07:53 PM enleth: just takes a big hammer
07:53 PM roycroft: one of the most useful tools i've ever purchased
07:54 PM roycroft: and i've never run into anyone who has ever heard of it
07:54 PM roycroft: it's really simple, but so effective
07:55 PM enleth: I have a suspicion that the hammer-operated one could be a bit more effective, as torque is always being applied at the exact same moment as the axial push, and it's also pulsed
07:55 PM roycroft: i have one like what you hae
07:55 PM roycroft: the air chisel one works a lot better
07:55 PM enleth: interesting, good to know
07:56 PM roycroft: i can honestly say i've never had a screw i could not extract with it, no matter how beat up, rusted, and stripped out it was
07:56 PM enleth: maybe it's a matter of not being able to hammer 5 times per second by hand
07:56 PM roycroft: yes, that's a big part of it
07:57 PM roycroft: it's the axial impact that lets the hardened screw bit dig in
07:57 PM enleth: so, both are equally effective in theory, but the air tool makes the job faster in absolute terms
07:57 PM roycroft: yes
07:57 PM roycroft: they both do the same thing
07:57 PM roycroft: but the air one does it a lot faster
07:58 PM enleth: now imagine how good it would be if the air tool had the helix that turns the bit in sync with the impact
07:58 PM roycroft: and the impact screw gun is just radial, i think, with no axial impact
07:59 PM roycroft: which is why it just spins on stripped out screw heads
07:59 PM roycroft: i don't mind turning the screw by hand
07:59 PM enleth: yep, useless for this
07:59 PM roycroft: although that can be difficult if used on a bolt
07:59 PM roycroft: unless one has a helper or a third hand
07:59 PM roycroft: but for screws it's no problem
08:00 PM enleth: regular impact guns only work with a good positive hold on the stuff being turned
08:00 PM enleth: undamaged hex, allen, torx or robertson heads, preferably
08:01 PM enleth: although I found an additional, somewhat unorthodox use lately
08:02 PM enleth: so those things have a 1/4" hex shank: https://www.amazon.com/Speedbor-1877239-Tools-Drilling-6-Piece/dp/B00LLGRQZY
08:02 PM enleth: I haven't ever seen any official recommendations about using them in impact guns anywhere
08:02 PM XXCoder: https://tenor.com/view/techies-anti-civ-anti-tech-techies-waiting-for-their3dprinted-pizza-to-be-ready-transhumanism-gif-20075456
08:02 PM XXCoder: anyone want that router? heh
08:02 PM enleth: but oh boy do they work well
08:03 PM enleth: a regular cordless drill is no match for an impact with one of those augers
08:03 PM enleth: loud as fuck, sure, but it chews through hardwood as if it wasn't there
08:04 PM roycroft: speaking of pizza
08:04 PM roycroft: last night was pizza night
08:05 PM roycroft: and i was running late, so i did not have time to make the dough from scratch
08:05 PM XXCoder: had pizza 4 ays ago, im good for few months
08:05 PM roycroft: i was at the market, and saw that they had pizza dough from a local bakery/cafe that i used to frequent in the before times, that has been closed for a year
08:05 PM roycroft: so i got that - i wanted to be able to support them still
08:05 PM roycroft: and it was the best store-bought pizza dough i've ever purchased
08:06 PM XXCoder: and it was year old? ;)
08:06 PM roycroft: i was quite happy
08:06 PM roycroft: it was fresh
08:06 PM XXCoder: yeah had to kid heh
08:06 PM roycroft: they're closed for retail, but still doing wholesale
08:06 PM roycroft: and have expanded their product line
08:06 PM roycroft: they also have a booth at the country fair
08:06 PM enleth: in all fairness, a deep frozen ball of pizza dough has no expiration date
08:07 PM XXCoder: really?
08:07 PM roycroft: where they probably make enough in a weekend there as they make the whole rest of the year at the cafe
08:07 PM roycroft: i've frozen pizza dough balls before
08:07 PM enleth: XXCoder: if your freezer does -30C/-22F, pretty much anything keeps pretty much forever
08:07 PM roycroft: when making pizza/bread dough, it's just as easy to make enough for four crusts/loaves as one
08:07 PM roycroft: so make that
08:07 PM roycroft: freeze 3
08:07 PM XXCoder: ahh makes sense, though I guess you need to protect stuff from freezer burn
08:07 PM enleth: meat, dough, whatever
08:08 PM enleth: some stuff just doesn't take well to being frozen in general
08:08 PM roycroft: the night before pizza day, pull a ball of dough out of the freezer and put it in the fridge to thaw
08:08 PM roycroft: then let it sit for a half hour at room temperature before making the pizza
08:08 PM enleth: but, amazingly enough, pizza dough and beef steak are two things that absolutely do
08:08 PM roycroft: salmon freezes fine except it loses its texture
08:08 PM enleth: you can even throw a deep frozen steak right onto the grill, simply adjust the time
08:09 PM roycroft: a lot of veggies lose texture when frozen
08:09 PM roycroft: mushrooms turn rubbery when frozen
08:09 PM roycroft: mushroom soup is one of the few soups i pressure can instead of freeze
08:10 PM roycroft: canning is 10x the work
08:10 PM roycroft: but i don't like eating rubber soup
08:12 PM enleth: roycroft: freezing partially dried vegetables helps
08:13 PM enleth: after thawing and rehydrating, they're better than either completely dried or just frozen
08:15 PM roycroft: i'm not sure if that would work for mushrooms
08:15 PM roycroft: but they are not vegetables
08:15 PM roycroft: they are fungi
08:15 PM enleth: never tried that, but there's only one way to know
08:15 PM roycroft: they will dry very nicely though
08:16 PM roycroft: but that does not help much if one is making soup
08:16 PM roycroft: in the winter, i tend to make big batches of soup
08:16 PM roycroft: eat one bowl for dinner, and freeze about 10 bowls worth
08:16 PM roycroft: i have a nice chamber vacuum sealer that takes plain plastic bags, so it is really cheap to freeze things
08:17 PM enleth: I've used a sous-vide bag sealer for this, a bit tricky to use with a soup but works
08:18 PM XXCoder: roy nice
08:18 PM roycroft: iirc it costs me about US$0.03 for a freezer bag
08:19 PM veegee: "soldering" and "brazing" mean the same thing right?
08:20 PM enleth: veegee: yes and no
08:20 PM veegee: enleth how do they differ?
08:20 PM enleth: veegee: technically yes, but the words imply different temperature ranges and use cases
08:20 PM veegee: ignoring that
08:20 PM roycroft: brazing is usally closer to the melt temperature of the materials being joined than soldering
08:20 PM veegee: I know "soldering" refers to electronics stuff more and "brazing" refers to high temeprature stuff like steel
08:21 PM veegee: roycroft ok yeah that's more what I was looking for
08:21 PM roycroft: actually, metals are soldered all the time
08:21 PM roycroft: most jewelry is soldered, for example
08:21 PM enleth: veegee: no one would ever mean anything low-temperature if they said "brazing", I think, but the other way around is common in some trades
08:22 PM roycroft: stained glass is soldered
08:22 PM roycroft: yes, enleth
08:23 PM roycroft: the exception being copper water pipe, which is called soldering when it's not being called "sweated", although it's generally not heated to close to melt point when the solder is applied
08:23 PM roycroft: closer these days than when lead solder was used
08:24 PM roycroft: but still well below melt temperature
08:24 PM roycroft: i'd not get hung up on the words, because they're rather squishy
08:25 PM enleth: roycroft: oh, one more thing on frozen soup - make conentrated stock, use muffin forms to freeze it into stock muffins, keep those in the freezer. takes a bit more additional work to turn into finished soup before serving, but it's way more space efficient in the freezer
08:25 PM roycroft: if you hear someone talk about soldering or brazing, find out what process they're talking about, and ignore the term they use to describe the process
08:26 PM roycroft: that's a good tip, but doesn't really apply to me, at least most of the time
08:26 PM roycroft: i usually have tubs of frozen water in my freezer to fill up the space so that it runs more efficiently
08:26 PM roycroft: having not enough room in the freezer is not a common problem in my house
08:27 PM enleth: those could be tubs of frozen mushroom stock, then
08:27 PM roycroft: as i add food to the freezer i remove the water tubs
08:27 PM roycroft: as i remove food from the freezer i add water tubs
08:27 PM roycroft: it's a fluid situation
08:27 PM roycroft: although not so much fluid as frozen
08:28 PM enleth: veegee: fun fact: some languages don't even have a separate word for "brazing", typically referring to "soft soldering" and "hard soldering" instead
08:29 PM roycroft: i've taken some jewelry making classes
08:29 PM roycroft: not that i want to be a jeweler
08:29 PM enleth: veegee: the latter being either silver solder or actual copper-zinc-on-cast-iron brazing
08:29 PM roycroft: but i figured the techniques they use might be useful and interesting
08:30 PM roycroft: jeweler's solder is mostly silver, but there are several different alloys used, with differing flow points
08:30 PM veegee: yeah silver solder and cast iron brazing is what I want to try
08:30 PM roycroft: much of jewelry making is multi-step construction, so one starts with a high flow temp solder, then uses the next lower temp for the second step, etc.
08:31 PM roycroft: that way one can solder multiple times on the same piece without worrying about the previous work coming undone
08:32 PM enleth: veegee: as with all soldering, the absolutely most important thing that will screw up everything if it's not right is the flux selection and application
08:32 PM roycroft: if you're going to braze cast iron, the most important tip i can offer is to preheat the cast iron really well, in a fairly wide swath
08:32 PM veegee: enleth yeah for sure
08:32 PM roycroft: and when you think you've preheated it well, preheat it a lot more
08:33 PM veegee: I've done a lot of electronics soldering, but no other kind
08:33 PM veegee: yeah even for welding cast iron, can't go wrong with more preheat
08:33 PM roycroft: i use brazing rod made for cast iron, which has a high percentage of nickel
08:34 PM roycroft: also, cool the cast iron as slowly as you can after welding/brazing on it
08:34 PM roycroft: it's not a difficult material to work with, but it's "special"
08:34 PM roycroft: you just need to know what it expects
08:36 PM enleth: a few sheets of rockwool will do a good job of slowing the cooling
08:36 PM veegee: that pretty much applies to all high-alloy steels
08:36 PM enleth: (just make sure it's actually rokcwool, not that cellulose-based crap that looks like rockwool...)
08:42 PM enleth: veegee: a welder friend tried to make a part for a customer out of some specialty tool steel that cracked like crazy as it cooled down after welding and finally ended up preheating the part very hard, welding and immediately dropping the part into a preheated heat treatment oven set to ramp down to room temperature over the next 24 hours
08:42 PM enleth: that one did not crack
08:43 PM roycroft: a pit of sand will also slow down the cooling, especially if you've heated the pit
08:43 PM veegee: Yeah I definitely need to make myself a heat treat oven
08:44 PM roycroft: i have a nice little one that i picked up on craigslist a few years ago
08:44 PM veegee: A nice well-sealed oven that I can pump argon into
08:44 PM roycroft: it does not maintain temperature as accurately as i'd like though
08:44 PM roycroft: but i have a pid controller and a high temp probe for it that i'm going to use
08:45 PM roycroft: it's sitting in the fabrication shop waiting for final assembly
08:45 PM roycroft: one of those mostly done projects that i just have to make the time to finish
08:45 PM roycroft: i'm not sure when i'll finish it, but i'm pretty sure it will be just before when i need to heat treat something next
08:55 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20210320_072206.jpg
08:55 PM Tom_L: getting close
08:56 PM skunkworks: that was 36 hours of 833rpm
08:56 PM XXCoder: awesome
08:56 PM XXCoder: grease or melted?
08:57 PM skunkworks: vaseline...
08:57 PM XXCoder: nice
08:57 PM skunkworks: with some plastic dust
08:57 PM skunkworks: That is with a petg flex gear..
08:57 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20210317_073558.jpg
08:58 PM skunkworks: that is what the pla did after 5 hours.
08:58 PM Tom_L: oops
08:58 PM XXCoder: ouch
08:58 PM XXCoder: yeah not surpised, pla is strong but more brittle
08:58 PM XXCoder: wonder if nylon would work
08:59 PM XXCoder: its pretty soft, but can flex damn near forever
09:08 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: I might be in luck, or I might be f*cked. Got a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R which since my luck is running like normal is totally missing the network setup section of the bios rendering the lan port useless and has an RTL8139 plugged in. LOL.
09:15 PM veegee: I just bought this AMOLED display and I absolutely love it: https://www.waveshare.com/5.5inch-hdmi-amoled.htm
09:15 PM veegee: can't wait until the first OLED monitors start coming out
09:15 PM veegee: I hate LCD with a passion
09:16 PM XXCoder: why?
09:16 PM veegee: viewing angles, contrast
09:16 PM XXCoder: contrast i agree
09:17 PM XXCoder: viewing angles depend on montiors. mine is very good on that
09:17 PM veegee: I have an LG C9 OLED TV and it takes me back to the CRT days
09:17 PM veegee: yeah I have lots of nice IPS panels too, but contrast is terrible compared to an OLED/CRT
09:18 PM XXCoder: i need better montiors myself. ones i have, while good on many aspects, suck on contrast
09:19 PM roycroft: my main office computer is a 27" imac, with a stunningly clear and bright display
09:20 PM roycroft: it is flanked by a 27" 4k display on either side
09:20 PM roycroft: it's a pretty nice setup
09:37 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: https://cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=SFC19120610.2.78&e=-------en--20--1--txt-txIN--------1
09:37 PM CaptHindsight: MOTORCYCLES By GEORGE FITCH
09:41 PM andypugh: Have you niticed that my .sig says 1912 and anywhere else you see the quote it is 1916?
09:58 PM veegee: roycroft yes the imac 5k displays are the best LCD panels right now
09:59 PM veegee: that's half the reason I bought imacs for all my employees
09:59 PM roycroft: i hate the imac generally, but i love the display
09:59 PM veegee: the next gen imac are moving to OLED I think
09:59 PM roycroft: it is so much slower than my old (2008) mac pro
10:00 PM veegee: yeah the imac should be just a display and nothing else
10:00 PM veegee: I have the LG ultrafine 5k as well, but it doesn't seem to be exactly the same panel
10:00 PM veegee: it's close though
10:00 PM roycroft: when i bought it i just could not afford one of the trash can mac pros
10:00 PM roycroft: they started at about $5k
10:00 PM roycroft: with no disk and no display
10:01 PM roycroft: and even if i could have afforded it i could not have justified it
10:01 PM roycroft: i don't believe in apple tax, generally, but that machine did have a lot of apple tax
10:01 PM veegee: yeah for regular workstation use, can't beat threadripper
10:01 PM veegee: imac pro and mac pro have insane apple tax
10:02 PM roycroft: most apple products are priced well for what they are
10:02 PM veegee: I use the imacs just as a thin client
10:02 PM roycroft: the problem is that people try to compare pos peecees with macs
10:02 PM veegee: any real work goes to the workstation over infiniband
10:02 PM roycroft: if they compare high end peecees to macs the cost is similar
10:02 PM veegee: no if you build your own, the cost is significantly lower
10:02 PM veegee: imac pro is overpriced
10:03 PM roycroft: i haven't looked at the imac pro
10:03 PM veegee: I mean mac pro, but also imac pro
10:03 PM roycroft: my imac is working fine
10:03 PM roycroft: there was no imac pro when i bought it
10:03 PM roycroft: my main complaint is that it's slow
10:04 PM veegee: boot from an external SSD
10:04 PM veegee: don't use the internal hard drive
10:04 PM roycroft: with my old mac pro i was used to running 3-4 virtual machines simultaneously
10:04 PM roycroft: with the imac i can only run one at a time and any kind of acceptable performance
10:05 PM roycroft: i also recently upgraded both it and my mbp to catalina
10:06 PM roycroft: and while that fixed quite a few things, it generally pisses me off
10:06 PM roycroft: it's locked down a bit too much
10:07 PM veegee: Yup, the best thing is to not depend on it. Using it as a thin client works very well
10:07 PM roycroft: well i mainly run xterms on it
10:07 PM veegee: I take advantage of the nice UI and display and leave the actual work to the threadripper with 32 cores and 256 GB RAM
10:07 PM roycroft: but when "ls ~/Desktop" fails because mac os doesn't trust bash any more, something is wrong
10:08 PM veegee: just grant full disk access to terminal in settings
10:08 PM roycroft: i did
10:08 PM roycroft: well, to xquartz
10:08 PM roycroft: and it still did not work
10:09 PM roycroft: turns out that granting full disk access to xquartz in settings only allows full disk access for zsh
10:09 PM roycroft: all other shells are still locked out
10:09 PM roycroft: i finally figured that out and allowed full disk access to /bin/bash, and now it's ok
10:09 PM roycroft: but that was a pain in the butt to sort out
10:09 PM roycroft: and completely unnecessary
10:09 PM veegee: yeah they have nothing better to do so they make each release shittier
10:10 PM roycroft: in other words, make every release more and more ios and less and less mac os
10:11 PM roycroft: but they're still not as bad as microsoft and the crap they've done to windows
10:12 PM roycroft: although i have to admit that windows 10 is the best windows release in a very long time, at least from a casual user who does not run windows often's point of view
10:12 PM veegee: Windows has gotten better
10:12 PM veegee: integration with Ubuntu, open sourcing all their .NET stuff, etc.
10:12 PM roycroft: windows 8 was horrible
10:12 PM roycroft: i haven't done the linux mode thing with windows 10 yet
10:13 PM roycroft: i wasn't aware of it until fairly recently
10:13 PM veegee: it works very well
10:13 PM roycroft: when i some spare time i'll clone a windows 10 vm and install it
