02:33 AM miss0r: morning
02:39 AM XXCoder: yo
02:39 AM gloops: hi
02:57 AM gloops: wondering what effect salt would have sprinkled on wet resin
02:58 AM XXCoder: texture? dunno
02:58 AM gloops: yeah was thinking that, maybe not though
02:59 AM gloops: they use it in painting, sprinkle salt on the wet paint it sucks the water up and creates a texture pattern, no water in resin though
02:59 AM gloops: wanting like a cast iron look, lightly hammered or something
02:59 AM gloops: old

05:32 AM Deejay: hi
06:00 AM JT-Cave: m orning
07:42 AM Tom_L: morning
07:43 AM miss0r: g'day
08:55 AM JT-Cave: hola
10:31 AM veegee: The cheap $2 chinese pocket knives sharpen to an ultra fine edge with my oil stones
10:32 AM veegee: The $100 cold steel S35VN knives I have take soooo much effort to sharpen
10:32 AM veegee: steel and alloys are just so amazing
10:51 AM veegee: Should I leave the swarf on the stone while I'm sharpening? Or should I clean it off every few strokes with honing oil?
11:34 AM sensille: miss0r: https://photos.app.goo.gl/AiXXXS2rW8NQm6Bd7
11:35 AM sensille: something is not quite right, the al part is just floating most of the time
11:38 AM Tom_L: put the weight off center
11:38 AM Tom_L: actually maybe it should spin the other way
11:39 AM Tom_L: http://ruemohr.org/%7Eircjunk/projects/finisher/slide.htm
11:40 AM Tom_L: have a look at his
11:40 AM Tom_L: he admitted his weights were too heavy
11:44 AM sensille: the weight is off-center, but i can increase that
11:45 AM Tom_L: should be on a separate shaft so you don't ruin the motor
11:47 AM sensille: https://i.imgur.com/4dmbapr.jpg
11:47 AM sensille: i can just remove one weight :)
11:47 AM Tom_L: yeah
11:48 AM ar: sensille: what's this?
11:48 AM sensille: there are 2 bearings in the wooden plates
11:48 AM Tom_L: ok
11:48 AM sensille: ar: vibrating tumbler
11:48 AM sensille: Tom_L: so you think the vibration is just not enough?
11:49 AM Tom_L: i think it might work better if it were in the horizontal plane
11:49 AM Tom_L: then it would want to roll instead of spin
11:49 AM Tom_L: just a wag
11:49 AM Tom_L: (wild ass guess)
11:51 AM sensille: it might get really wild with just one weight
11:51 AM Tom_L: better start it out toward the center if you do
11:52 AM Tom_L: stack washers then you can control it better
11:57 AM sensille: i removed the outer weight. the amplitude is higher, i have to spin slower, but it still floats
11:57 AM sensille: i'll make a smaller weight for finer adjustment. something in between
11:58 AM sensille: although cutting the 25mm steel bar with a hacksaw is a punishment
12:13 PM gloops: cement mixer
12:28 PM sensille: i have the impression the vibration is fine, but the geometry is not quite right
12:31 PM sensille: or i need more stones
12:59 PM gloops: is this a polishing machine sensille?
01:00 PM gloops: lapidary
01:00 PM sensille: i want it to be one
01:02 PM sensille: or does it need water?
01:08 PM gloops: well for stones they generally use a rotating drum with water and grit
01:08 PM gloops: they did anyway, not sure if newer ideas are in now
01:08 PM gloops: i.e a cement mixer
01:28 PM gloops: polishing brass in cement mixer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dejE4iL9UK8
01:29 PM gloops: i saw a used once tiny cement mixer advertised locally for 30 quid, still got it laid around
01:29 PM rue_mohr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG5aC44US94
01:30 PM rue_mohr: tom_L suggested I make one
01:31 PM gloops: like that https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ebayimg.com%2F00%2Fs%2FMTAyNFg3NjU%3D%2Fz%2FttIAAOSwysVczblV%2F%24_86.JPG&f=1&nofb=1
01:31 PM gloops: can just pick it up and walk around
01:32 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/PVnQ87Fvsk4 interesting suggested video
01:32 PM gloops: same result i guess
01:34 PM gloops: you need a bit more wobble on the motor maybe, have one weight heavier than the other, or the distance to one weight shorter than the other
01:36 PM gloops: i was talking to this guy with a gift shop at whitby, selling these highly polished stones for like £200 each - he just gets the stones off the beach for free, got about 8 cement mixers running in a garage round the back 24/7 lol
01:57 PM unterhaus: there is a browser add-in that excludes pinterest from google searches
01:59 PM unterhaus: I think I can add -pinterest.* to my searches though
02:00 PM unterhaus: sorry -site:pinterest.* So maybe I need the add-in after all
02:04 PM XXCoder: pinterest sucks
02:08 PM gloops: its ok for research purposes, finding vectors or product images
02:31 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:32 PM JT-Shop: yippie my auber instruments package arrived
03:14 PM XXCoder: yay
03:50 PM unterhaus_: I'm starting to feel like amazon didn't really have a bandsaw fence to sell me
04:18 PM XXCoder: whats happening?
04:18 PM gigasu_shida is now known as gigas_cedar
05:10 PM Guest1174 is now known as _unreal_
05:10 PM _unreal_: soo
05:11 PM _unreal_: I'm trying to figure out something
05:11 PM _unreal_: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074CV9VVJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
05:11 PM _unreal_: I purchased that laser
05:11 PM _unreal_: at the bottom of the middle of the page is says that the laser is a 5v. at the bottom of the page it says that it is a 1v
05:11 PM _unreal_: dont want to blow the laser
05:11 PM _unreal_: I purchased one of those TTL input laser drivers with adjustable voltage/current control things
05:12 PM _unreal_: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078HQQGWG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
05:12 PM _unreal_: do I set the laser to 5v OR do I set it to 1V?
05:12 PM _unreal_: also I'm trying to solve the math... I MUST be stupid
05:13 PM _unreal_: but according to the amazon posting. its a 2hp laser
05:13 PM _unreal_: not bad... 2 watts and 2 horse power
05:13 PM _unreal_: and it can produce 2 foot lbs of torque
05:14 PM _unreal_: OH OH OH and its Battery Capacity 2 Watt Hours
06:08 PM _unreal_: quiet
06:24 PM JT-Cave: just drove to Fredricktown for dinner at the Depot and back FD & H
06:24 PM XXCoder: hey wheres my dinner
06:25 PM JT-Cave: ain't nothing left lol
06:25 PM XXCoder: aw
06:26 PM zeeshan: haha
06:30 PM JT-Cave: the Depot is a nice little restaurant in a nice little town about an hour from here... sun shining so a good afternoon for a ride in a toy and a good meal
06:31 PM XXCoder: nice
06:32 PM JT-Cave: first time we have been out in the Corvette this year, battery was half dead the other day when I checked it so had to bring it back up
06:33 PM XXCoder: thats why I drive my car weekly, to keep it alive
06:34 PM JT-Cave: I should but weather has been so nasty here I didn't even think of starting it up
06:35 PM rue_mohr: playing with a stepper motor and encoder
06:36 PM rue_mohr: the stepper doesn't start moving till about 0.3ms after the coils change
06:36 PM rue_mohr: at 2.5ms it passes its target
06:36 PM rue_mohr: at 24 to 48ms its finished ringing and settles on the new steps position
06:37 PM rue_mohr: which implies that above 12.5rpm, its not hitting its new positon before the new step comes in
06:39 PM JT-Cave: a fellow on the wiki did a good write up on steppers and encoders
06:40 PM rue_mohr: what I'm interested in tho, is how long a motor takes to do a step
06:40 PM rue_mohr: nobody seems to be interested in that
06:41 PM JT-Cave: that would depend on the voltage I assume as voltage equals speed
06:41 PM Tom_L: and inductance
06:42 PM JT-Cave: aye
06:42 PM Tom_L: i think my irc pc just died :/
06:42 PM rue_mohr: I'm talking about 1 step
06:42 PM JT-Cave: looks like the pullets have settled down for the night
06:42 PM JT-Cave: and the higher the voltage the faster a step can happen
06:43 PM Tom_L: it should be able to be calculated based on inductance and voltage i'd think
06:44 PM rue_mohr: this IS a unipolar voltage driven stepper, but its some kinda base line
06:46 PM JT-Cave: that's prob why good stepper drivers like gecko micro step up to a point then morph to full steps
06:49 PM JT-Cave: yeah there is a calculator on the wiki
06:53 PM Tom_L: i wonder how close it is to actual
06:57 PM JT-Cave: I imagine the formulas are pretty close
08:42 PM unterhaus_: 1/4" bit holder shaped like jaws https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4745852/files?fbclid=IwAR04jisj6ewfJpnA3vdcXcddseqhNVQLE1mMDWJKsbRYyT-tFaEswm8EEM4
08:47 PM XXCoder: gonna love profile pic
09:42 PM roycroft: that is creepy
10:03 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20210306_215016.jpg
10:04 PM XXCoder: nice
10:04 PM XXCoder: getting there
10:04 PM Tom_L: goin for it ehh?
10:05 PM skunkworks: of course..
10:05 PM Tom_L: why are they hollowed out?
10:06 PM Tom_L: my irc pc died tonight :/
10:06 PM Tom_L: i'm on an rpi until i can fix it
10:07 PM skunkworks: the center is the shaft for the stepper - the to outside bosses are for the bearings - they will be threaded for bolts to hold the berings on.
10:07 PM skunkworks: bearings
10:07 PM Tom_L: ahh ok
10:07 PM Tom_L: so on the plastic you were just hoping they'd stay on
10:08 PM skunkworks: right - proof of concept.. :)
10:08 PM XXCoder: i bet it was annoying having them pop out as you move it around. saw it fall out at one point heh
10:10 PM Tom_L: this rpi is painfully slow
10:10 PM XXCoder: i bet if you put in windows xp, it'd be really zippy
10:12 PM Tom_L: no better than linux
10:14 PM Tom_L: using wifi is even wors
10:14 PM Tom_L: e
10:18 PM XXCoder: lol ok
10:18 PM XXCoder: whats wrong with oc anyway
10:20 PM roycroft: run minix on it
10:20 PM roycroft: it will seem really fast
10:20 PM Tom_L: i'm not changin anything it's only til a board arrives
10:21 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, didn't know if you saw my last project: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Pressure_test_cap8.jpg
10:21 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Pressure_test_cap7.jpg
10:22 PM XXCoder: omg hovering thingy is back
10:22 PM Tom_L: extinguisher hydro test cap
10:33 PM Tom_Rpi is now known as Tom_L
10:43 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: cool! thread milled?
10:45 PM beachbumpete1: Tom_L: looking great man I love thread milling
10:47 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, yes
10:47 PM Tom_L: 1.5" x 16
