01:23 AM miss0r: morning
01:30 AM CaptHindsight: howdydo
01:31 AM miss0r: driving to the hospital to get the cast removed in 10 mins :D
01:33 AM XXCoder: awesome
01:41 AM Deejay: moin
01:58 AM bjorkintosh: miss0r, at a quarter to 2 in the morning???
01:58 AM bjorkintosh: with all this snow???
02:02 AM CaptHindsight: bjorkintosh: he lives in out future, it's like 10am there already
02:02 AM CaptHindsight: out/our
02:02 AM bjorkintosh: Oh how nice!
02:02 AM XXCoder: capt is hiding one part of truth
02:03 AM XXCoder: in futrure at 10 am yes, but also at 2024
02:03 AM CaptHindsight: i always ask him or our friends in Australia if tomorrow is a better day
02:03 AM bjorkintosh: I bet they didn't have a good answer during the bush fires.
02:03 AM XXCoder: yeah that fire was insane :(
02:44 AM miss0r: cast is off !
02:45 AM miss0r: I don't know what I expected. But for some reason I thought my fingers were supposed to be in perfect shape once it came off.. Now I can look forward to two weeks of finger training before I can expect them to be at their best again
02:47 AM miss0r: I CAN HOLD A MOUSE WITHOUT CRAMPING MY ARM ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
03:12 AM Loetmichel: hrrrmph. sitting here at home 2 hours late for work waiting for the 3dprinter to finish... after i couldnt get the 4 at the company to work i took the filament and the file home and used my own. underestimated the time it took though... that print started yesterday at 1900... :(
03:17 AM miss0r: damn
03:17 AM miss0r: But atleast the boss understands what is going on?
03:28 AM justan0theruser is now known as justanotheruser
03:29 AM bjorkintosh: what are you printing, Loetmichel?
03:29 AM bjorkintosh: a_part.cnc ?
04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
04:26 AM XXCoder: hey
04:44 AM Loetmichel: bjorkintosh: corner protectors for 24" monitor frames
04:51 AM XXCoder: did you finally succeed start print at work?
05:06 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:06 AM XXCoder: hey
05:30 AM Tom_L: 11F hi 34
06:31 AM JT-Cave: 3°F high 30°F
06:31 AM XXCoder: 37-51f this week lol
06:31 AM JT-Cave: yep I've used all my data for the month... still wonding what's using it up
06:32 AM unterhaus: supposed to be warm here on wednesday, 45F
06:33 AM JT-Cave: Tuesday 53°F here
06:33 AM unterhaus: We're getting snow on monday
06:35 AM unterhaus: sort of interesting the polar vortex didn't move east. Looks like it might be letting up a tiny bit
06:35 AM JT-Cave: I have some extra snow if you're in a hurry
06:35 AM XXCoder: send some here too
06:36 AM XXCoder: its so rare to see snow and i wanna see some more lol
06:36 AM unterhaus: I'm waiting for the heavy rain to melt it all in one day like normal
06:37 AM unterhaus: the weather here will test how well your house is laid out every year.
06:38 AM unterhaus: a previous owner had graded the back yard towards the house
06:38 AM XXCoder: geez
06:38 AM unterhaus: flooded every winter
06:39 AM unterhaus: there was a berm around the basement door, but I guess it was clumsy looking so they took it out
06:40 AM unterhaus: I had it raised 4' and put in retaining walls, now our neighbor gets all the water
07:01 AM htasta: JT-Cave: you can use nethogs to find out what's burning your data
07:11 AM JT-Cave: nethogs?
07:11 AM JT-Cave: 1°F
07:11 AM JT-Cave: so much for a low of 8°F this morning
07:19 AM JT-Cave: htasta, seems nethogs only monitors the pc it's installed on... I have many pc's on my lan
07:20 AM htasta: i have a network monitor logger on my router, maybe that's more convenient for you.
07:21 AM JT-Cave: looking
07:22 AM htasta: http://usage-monitoring.com/index.php
07:22 AM htasta: this is the one I used to use
07:22 AM htasta: if you also have windows machines, their update is a common cause for data usage
07:23 AM JT-Cave: AFAIK auto update is turned off on both windblows pcs
07:24 AM htasta: gotta set the network to "metered" on windows
07:24 AM JT-Cave: hmm where do you do that?
07:25 AM htasta: win10? but usually you just have to crawl through the dozen network menus until you find somewhere hidden some obscure little knob to turn it to metered, lol
07:25 AM htasta: i absolutely fucking hate that shit OS :D
07:26 AM JT-Cave: 7
07:29 AM htasta: ok, I don't think it has that option, autoupdate disable should suffice. don't have a 7 at hand atm to check. but I guess a monitor on the router is the way to go for you to see it on a device level
07:35 AM Loetmichel: haach, nice... just swapped the bad HDD in my company PC with a new SSD and copied the contents... now the PC performs adequately again... not to wait on 100s of rereads any more!
08:08 AM norias: anyone around that understands the working of the Mesa 7i76E?
08:10 AM JavaBean: the peeps with the highest chance of helping are around, but their timezones have it so that they are just getting their day started... be patient
08:11 AM norias: fair enough
08:11 AM norias: i'm just curious how the information is sent on those
08:11 AM norias: i dunno, have trouble wrapping my head around that part
08:12 AM perry_j1987: udp
08:17 AM norias: so, the contents of the udp packet have...
08:17 AM norias: i mean, i feel like, not knowing anything
08:17 AM norias: that both ends of that connection ...
08:17 AM norias: there should be a higher level protocol of some sort
08:18 AM norias: or am i off base?
08:27 AM htasta: norias: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/drivers/hostmot2.html
08:28 AM norias: interesting, i'll read through this
08:28 AM norias: thanks
08:32 AM enleth: norias: a peek at the mesaflash source suggests that it's a thin UDP wrapper around the same "protocol" that runs over PCI
08:44 AM Loetmichel: *ahhhhhh* just got 4 digital calipers delivered here... for €6 each. The seller forgot to mention that they are made of gray PA-GF6 instead of (stainless)steel. well, for that price: good enough to find the right size drill bit :)
08:45 AM enleth: Loetmichel: been there done that, the packaging also often fails to mention this little insignificant detail
08:46 AM enleth: fun fact: there are some very high quality and very expensive nylon calipers on the market, intended for use around electrified assemblies, to mitigate the risk of shock or short circuit
08:50 AM Loetmichel: yeo
08:50 AM Loetmichel: yep
08:50 AM Loetmichel: those i have here are none of that though
08:50 AM sensille: Loetmichel: i need one to measure magnets
08:51 AM norias: enleth: i'm assuming that's not documented (other than in the source)
12:12 PM ziper: the lathe seems to be working
12:18 PM roycroft: well my laptop is on a delivery vehicle in springtucky
12:18 PM roycroft: so it might actually be delivered today
12:20 PM roycroft: oh, also, i did not have a lot of time to work on my bandsaw yesterday, but i did try two different blades and they track much better than the one i was working with, so i think it's just a funky blade
12:21 PM roycroft: which makes sense, as i had the wheels completely coplanar, and the tires only have a few hours of use on them
12:40 PM MrHindsight is now known as CaptHindsight
12:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:51 PM JT-Cave: 24°F and the driveway is clear of snow and will be dry shortly in the sun
12:51 PM Tom_L: 30F
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: Our first step towards a solution was finding an unskilled person to be at the shop while we remote into the PC which controls the CNC machine.
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: what, no robots?
12:54 PM bjorkintosh: damned shame.
12:55 PM Tom_L: there are an abundance of those around
12:57 PM norias: whoa, wait
12:57 PM JT-Shop: graded the driveway, hens came outside, sun is shining...
12:57 PM norias: bjorkintosh: what problem are you trying to solve?
12:57 PM Tom_L: sounds like a stellar day at jt's place
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: norias, it's in response to the article CaptHindsight posted.
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: https://1d.works/how-we-started-operating-our-cnc-machines-remotely/
12:58 PM norias: ahh, i missed that, thanks
12:58 PM norias: i'm super interested in that problem
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: pfft. it was solved by fanuc ages ago.
12:58 PM bjorkintosh: they make their devices in lights out factories.
12:59 PM bjorkintosh: they're no fools. very soon, with autonomous trucks, they won't even need to be present to ship anything.
01:00 PM norias: yeah, i dunno about that
01:00 PM norias: they make the same thing over and over
01:00 PM bjorkintosh: why? are you perhaps afraid?
01:00 PM norias: with someone to prove out the setup
01:00 PM bjorkintosh: oh. machine learning :-) it'll learn.
01:00 PM norias: lol, ok
01:01 PM norias: sounds like you're not familiar with the problem
01:01 PM bjorkintosh: I'm being sarcastic, I hope you realize.
01:01 PM norias: k
01:01 PM bjorkintosh: but which problem in particular are you talking about?
01:08 PM roycroft: and my laptop just arrived
01:08 PM roycroft: thank goodness
01:12 PM JT-Shop: maybe my ups shipments will arrive this month...
01:13 PM bjorkintosh: maybe my book on the early years of NC will arrive this year. it's 60 days over due :-(
01:13 PM bjorkintosh: I ordered it in November.
01:14 PM bjorkintosh: perhaps it's been attacked by covid and buried in the snow.
01:16 PM CaptHindsight: self driving vehicles still need to work out placing liability on the "passenger" vs the vehicle maker
01:17 PM bjorkintosh: only a lawsuit will settle that argument. the vehicle maker will of course shift the blame to the owner/operator.
01:17 PM roycroft: ups showed up here at 8pm last night
01:17 PM roycroft: i think they're trying hard to catch up
01:17 PM bjorkintosh: there'll be an EULA to sign each time a passenger enters the vehicle.
01:18 PM bjorkintosh: I also think car makers are not familiar with the utter crapiness of software development. they'll find out soon :-)
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: nah AI will work out all the kinks :)
01:19 PM bjorkintosh: hahaha
01:19 PM bjorkintosh: right.
01:20 PM bjorkintosh: begin
01:20 PM bjorkintosh: GIGO
01:20 PM bjorkintosh: end
01:23 PM CaptHindsight: soon we can just AI vs Google for answers
01:23 PM CaptHindsight: but liability will still be on the person asking vs AI
01:24 PM bjorkintosh: the car companies have more lawyers than the passenger.
01:25 PM bjorkintosh: I predict that it'll take a class action lawsuit to correct that balance.
01:26 PM ziper: is it worth getting a quick change toolpost?
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: nah you'll just do as you're told, chasing underground lizard pedo pizza makers :)
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: possibly depends on what you think your time is worth
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: or how impatient you are
01:39 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/tool-posts-piston-wedge-153603/
01:41 PM roycroft: i just got some new toolpost holders last night
01:41 PM roycroft: that's one of the things ups brought me
01:42 PM roycroft: hopefully i won't have to swap tooling in the holders so often now
01:42 PM roycroft: the answer, ziper, is: yes
01:43 PM roycroft: you don't need a genuine aloris
01:43 PM roycroft: but you do want a wedge type, not a piston type
01:44 PM roycroft: you realy want one of the indexing types like abom uses, and whose name escapes me at the moment
01:45 PM roycroft: but for most folks that's a luxury
01:45 PM roycroft: i should be more on topic
01:45 PM roycroft: you realy want one of the indexing types like andypugh uses, and whose name escapes me at the moment
01:45 PM roycroft: there, that's better
01:46 PM andypugh: http://www.createtool.com/list.asp?cid=33
01:48 PM andypugh: The Chinese Multifix clones are reasonably affordable.
02:53 PM enleth: and they fit genuine multifix toolposts, and vice versa
04:26 PM CaptHindsight: freenode is unstable today
04:28 PM skunkworks: reddit is a bit unstable too
04:29 PM Tom_L: Tx is frozen
04:34 PM skunkworks: that is crazy.
04:35 PM XXCoder: frosty cowboys
04:36 PM JT-Shop: grocery stores were a mad house this afternoon
04:40 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks: do I follow your harmonic/planetary drive project on your youtube channel or is it on the forums somewhere?
05:11 PM roycroft: it is friday thank goodness
05:22 PM JT-Shop: how long does titebond take to setup?
05:23 PM Tom_L: clamp for 30 set for 24
05:24 PM JT-Shop: ok thanks I can get more done now
05:25 PM Tom_L: i don't always adhere to those numbers...
05:26 PM roycroft: depends on the titebond
05:26 PM JT-Shop: titebond III
05:26 PM roycroft: then what tom_l said should be fine
05:26 PM JT-Shop: and mdf to oak
05:27 PM roycroft: there's some fast acting titebond now, and an extend open time titebond
05:27 PM JT-Shop: I know that for SYP you need to clamp for 24h
05:27 PM roycroft: if you use hide glue you may not need to clamp at all
05:27 PM roycroft: :)
05:28 PM JT-Shop: on SYP?
05:28 PM roycroft: yes, even on that
05:29 PM roycroft: depending on what you're joining, with hided glue it can be as fast as rub rub rub, hold for a minute, and bob's your uncle
05:29 PM roycroft: hide glue still takes 24 hours to develop full strength
05:29 PM XXCoder: NOO WHAT BOB IS MY UNCLE
05:29 PM roycroft: but it does the initial tack very quickly
05:30 PM roycroft: i should go depost my pahcheck
05:30 PM Tom_L: i'd clamp to squeeze the excess out
05:30 PM roycroft: paycheck
05:30 PM roycroft: that would be a good idea
05:30 PM roycroft: it depends on what you're doing tom_l
05:30 PM roycroft: yes, i generally clamp
05:31 PM roycroft: but if you need to add a little support pad underneath a table top it may be inconvenient to clamp
05:31 PM roycroft: in which case rubbing the glue in and holding it is fine
05:32 PM Tom_L: they must have worked out my car warranty cause now they're concerned about my SS
05:33 PM * JT-Shop goes to glue one more piece on the dust collection manifold
05:56 PM JT-Cave: geez if ups don't come on monday with a high of 46°F they are fired
06:04 PM jdh]: my new bike got shipped through texas. delayed :(
06:04 PM JT-Cave: frozen?
06:05 PM JT-Cave: or no electricity or water
06:05 PM Tom_L: Tx is yes
06:05 PM Tom_L: that too
06:05 PM JT-Cave: both of my daughters have water and electric back on
06:06 PM Tom_L: https://www.motor1.com/news/489170/car-frozen-water-leak-texas/
06:06 PM jdh]: no clue. ordered it sunday night so I was surprised it was supposed to be here today anyway
06:06 PM Tom_L: car in parking garage was under a pipe that broke now in a block of ice
06:06 PM Tom_L: (since you lost your data)
06:07 PM JT-Cave: not lost just don't have any lol
06:08 PM Tom_L: galveston
06:08 PM JT-Cave: holy crap that is south texas
06:08 PM Tom_L: nearly as south as you can get
06:11 PM JT-Cave: harlingen is much farther south
06:11 PM Tom_L: been an unusual winter for sure
06:11 PM JT-Cave: aye
06:11 PM JT-Cave: finally the pullets are going inside
06:11 PM JT-Cave: the confederate air force is located in harlingen
06:12 PM roycroft: my stuff from wisconsin has arrived
06:12 PM roycroft: one parcel via fedex, one via ups
06:12 PM roycroft: i have two parcels coming from ohio that are due the first of the week - one fedex, the other via usps
06:13 PM JT-Cave: time to close up the Queens coop for the night
06:13 PM roycroft: i guess i'll find out then if they show up on time
06:13 PM Tom_L: i think Corpus Christi is the furthest S in Tx i've been
06:15 PM roycroft: i've driven to mexico, back when i lived in chicago
06:16 PM roycroft: laredo would be as south as i've been in texas
06:16 PM roycroft: since i crossed the border there
06:21 PM JT-Cave: my Dad an I flew to Harlingen in his Cessna 170 to see the Confederate air show
06:22 PM JT-Cave: quite impressive the size of the TBF Avenger bigger than most twin engine fighters or bombers
06:24 PM JT-Cave: time to cook some Jambalaya
06:25 PM roycroft: it's pizza night here
06:25 PM * Tom_L thinks roycroft eats alot of pizza
06:25 PM roycroft: usually i make pizza on friday
06:25 PM Tom_L: mmm
06:26 PM roycroft: last week was an exception, since the 9th was national pizza day
06:26 PM roycroft: so i made pizza on both tuesday and friday that week
06:26 PM roycroft: but again, i don't see the downside to that
06:27 PM roycroft: today is not only pizza day, it is magazine day - four magazines arrived in the mail today
06:28 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i've ever received more than one in a day before
06:56 PM CaptHindsight: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOM7_yQLD6tLx1VtQMXeaxtIQZLDWbWU31tJCaj9s3GdS3wlyf62zHhwtYWnmAmzw?key=U2pTc0xvMzJpLTVaWk05SDlmYV9lVVliUWZ0czNR BP clone
07:25 PM roycroft: importing 1,335,639 messages
07:25 PM roycroft: i guess my time machine backup did not backup my emails
07:25 PM roycroft: i suspect this is going to take a while
07:27 PM Tom_L: especially if you stop to read each one
07:27 PM hazzy-m: roycroft: even I don't have them many emails, and I've been subscribed to harbor freight and MPJA special emails for years lol
07:28 PM roycroft: my emails go back to the uucp days
07:28 PM roycroft: i think my oldest mail folder starts in 1982 or so
07:29 PM roycroft: it claims that it's going to take another half hour
07:29 PM roycroft: that's pretty quick
07:29 PM roycroft: if it turns out to be true
07:59 PM roycroft: it's pretty weird what time machine doesn't back up properly
08:00 PM roycroft: my dock properties
08:00 PM roycroft: keyboard mappings
08:00 PM roycroft: it gets most other stuff, though
08:00 PM roycroft: i think it's apple's "you're not behaving like we think you should" thing
08:01 PM roycroft: just like how they reset your appliction settings when doing upgrades
08:01 PM roycroft: "oh, you changed that behavior. we don't think you should do that, so we're going to change it back for you"
08:45 PM jdh]: I used to love MPJA before the internette
09:04 PM roycroft: i've been on the internet since the early '80s, when it was arpanet
09:05 PM roycroft: i had uni accounts ;)
09:16 PM Thorhian: Has anyone here made their own metal way covers or shielded bellows?
09:16 PM XXCoder: not me, but I wonder how common having a large bender is
09:17 PM Thorhian: I unfortunately don't
09:17 PM XXCoder: you techincally could make one
09:17 PM XXCoder: long L beams
09:17 PM Thorhian: Lol
09:18 PM Tom_L: i used neoprene for mine
09:18 PM Tom_L: i think skunkworks came up with some metal for his green machine
09:19 PM Thorhian: Right now I just have some rubber sheets covering things but I really need to make something waterproof for the future.
09:19 PM Thorhian: Plus the sheets like to get pinched in the machine as well
09:20 PM Tom_L: i made some rollers for under mine
09:20 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/spindle_cooler/Mill1.jpg
09:20 PM Thorhian: You got pictures?
09:21 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Bearing_Bracket/Bearing_Bracket5.jpg
09:21 PM Tom_L: you can see where it rubbed before
09:21 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Bearing_Bracket/Bearing_Bracket3.jpg
09:22 PM Tom_L: the one behind Y is attached at both ends
09:22 PM Tom_L: Z just hangs
09:22 PM Tom_L: the rear Y is probably 1/16 neoprene, the front one is heavier
09:23 PM Thorhian: Yeah, Unforunately my motors are hanging off the front and side of my machine. The rollers like you have might prevent the pinching though with the ballscrew block mounts.
09:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Z-Riser_blocks.jpg
09:24 PM Tom_L: there's the rear one
09:24 PM Tom_L: i had that issue also
09:24 PM Tom_L: no more
09:25 PM Tom_L: the rear one doesn't catch
09:25 PM Tom_L: skunkworks made his to fold upward against z
09:25 PM Tom_L: instead of retract into itself like regular metal way covers
09:26 PM Thorhian: I like the way you mounted the sheets to the table. I wish I could easily do that but only some of the surfaces are flat. Some the metal still has nasty scale on the sides lol. I bet I can still make it work. Just wish I could make proper shielded bellows or telescopic covers, but I don't have the money or skill lol
09:26 PM Tom_L: expensive to buy
09:26 PM Tom_L: you _can_ custom order them
09:26 PM Tom_L: i got the neoprene free
09:27 PM Tom_L: from an elevator belt supply company
09:27 PM Tom_L: cutoff pieces
09:27 PM Thorhian: I know, but way too much money.
09:28 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Vise_parts/table_slot1.jpg
09:28 PM Tom_L: you can kinda see how Z just hangs down there
09:29 PM Thorhian: I'm already building a dedicated stand at the moment, welding together 2" square steel tubing. I plan on building an enclosure once that is done built around it and the machine using steel sheet and 20mm t-slot aluminum extrusion. Use a pair of good draw slides that I already have for a sliding door.
09:29 PM Thorhian: Also, that looks nice Tom.
09:29 PM Tom_L: i don't have room for a full enclosure
09:30 PM Tom_L: and i'm afraid it would just get in my way
09:31 PM Thorhian: I want flood cooling, so I kind of need it along with the fact that I'm moving my machine into my basement out of the garage. Too cold (or hot in the summer). It's hurting the electronics and the steel that makes up the machine. My breath is something I have to worry about due to the condensation rusting my poor vise and other parts.
09:32 PM Thorhian: More conveniant location for me too :) I kind of live in the basement lol.
09:33 PM roycroft: i would not want any machines in my living space
09:34 PM roycroft: i'm not one of those gear hobber in the dining room people :)
09:34 PM Tom_L: i had my sherline in the basement for a while
09:35 PM roycroft: even having my 3d printer in my library for a while bothered me
09:35 PM Tom_L: had a full enclosure but i still found chips outside it
09:35 PM Thorhian: It's not technically. We have a work room that is still just concrete floor and no sheet rock. It's also where the subpanel is along with the house heater and water softener lol. Good place to be if not in the garage.
09:35 PM Tom_L: i coat my vise with vactra 2 when i'm not using it
09:36 PM Thorhian: I plan on putting in some noise dampening stuff in the room too.
09:37 PM roycroft: i try to keep my machines smothered in vactra
09:37 PM Thorhian: This is the first time I've heard of vactra.
09:37 PM Tom_L: mobile
09:37 PM Tom_L: mobil
09:37 PM Thorhian: Yeah, just looked it up.
09:37 PM Tom_L: 1-4
09:38 PM roycroft: it's pretty standard stuff in the machining world
09:38 PM Tom_L: 2 seems best for cnc
09:38 PM roycroft: so pay attention to it :)
09:38 PM Thorhian: Maybe that is what I should have ordered for my ballscrews and linear rails...
09:38 PM roycroft: it's sticky but doesn't cause much sticktion
09:38 PM Tom_L: good stuff
09:38 PM roycroft: it's not the best for vertical ways
09:38 PM roycroft: vactra 2
09:39 PM roycroft: if you have a lot of vertical surfaces to protect get vactra 3 or 4 for them
09:39 PM roycroft: i just use vactra 2 for everything, though
09:40 PM Thorhian: I got this for my linear rails and ballscrews because it was the closest I could find in Hiwin's docs:
09:40 PM Thorhian: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071VDJT6G/
09:40 PM roycroft: because a gallon of vactra lasts a very long time in my shop
09:40 PM roycroft: and i don't need 2 gallons
09:40 PM Tom_L: i got a little from my friend that gets it by the 5 gal pail
09:41 PM roycroft: that's a good way to get it
09:41 PM Tom_L: i think you can find quarts but surely costs more
09:41 PM roycroft: yeah
09:41 PM roycroft: a gallon is only about $35, though
09:41 PM Tom_L: i doubt i'd ever use a gallon
09:41 PM roycroft: it's not the cost that keeps me from stocking both vactra2 and vactra3
09:42 PM roycroft: it's the real estate that the extra jug consumes
09:42 PM Tom_L: yup
09:42 PM Thorhian: I wish I knew more about oil lubricants... Is vactra a good idea on ballscrews and linear rails (AKA, ball bearings and not ways and leadscrews)?
09:43 PM Tom_L: i put it on mine
09:43 PM roycroft: i think it's probably a bit too heavy for ball screws
09:43 PM roycroft: but if it's what you have it will work
09:43 PM Tom_L: my rail trucks came with grease zerts but i'm not using them
09:43 PM Tom_L: at least not yet
09:44 PM Tom_L: i coat them good with oil
09:44 PM Tom_L: if i were using it more i might consider a central oiling setup
09:44 PM Thorhian: I'm replacing the greese inlets with pneumatic inserts to put tuping on them for oil pump.
09:44 PM roycroft: i think vactra is red metal safe
09:44 PM roycroft: but i'm not 100% certain on that
09:44 PM Thorhian: red metal?
09:45 PM roycroft: brass/bronze/copper
09:45 PM Thorhian: Ah
09:46 PM roycroft: a lot of lubricants are corrosive to red metals
09:46 PM Thorhian: That's good to know lol
09:47 PM roycroft: so i got a jar of camphor tablets a couple months ago
09:48 PM roycroft: my garage shop is not normally heated, and winter is the wet part of the year here
09:48 PM roycroft: i took some film cannisters, drilled holes in them, and filled them with camphor tablets
09:48 PM roycroft: and stuck a film cannister in every drawer of every one of my tool chests
09:48 PM roycroft: so far no signs of rust on anything
09:49 PM roycroft: and all my tool chests smell nice now
09:49 PM Thorhian: XD
09:50 PM Thorhian: Along with the rust problems and electronic problems, I also don't like working in a garage that is the same or worse than the temperature outside lol, which means my hands and feet even in boots and gloves go numb.
09:50 PM CaptHindsight: Thorhian: there are vactra way oils and spindle oils
09:51 PM roycroft: i have a nice electric heater for my garage
09:51 PM roycroft: but it's expensive to operate
09:51 PM roycroft: and i can't use it if i'm going to be spraying anything flammable, of course
09:52 PM Thorhian: I bet. We have no insulation out there, so even a kerosene heater is only a temporary solution as I weld and put tother stuff for working inside.
09:52 PM roycroft: in my fabrication shop i have one of those oil-filled electric radiators, so i can spray in there safely
09:52 PM CaptHindsight: it will be spring soon
09:52 PM roycroft: yeah, and a kerosene heater will just make things rust more
09:52 PM CaptHindsight: then the temps will be nice and then we can start to complain about the heat
09:52 PM roycroft: so you don't want to use it very much
09:53 PM roycroft: i'm not really complaining
09:53 PM roycroft: just commenting on the things i have to do in the winter
09:53 PM CaptHindsight: we get 2-4 weeks here without the need for heat or AC
09:53 PM roycroft: and it doesn't really get cold here
09:53 PM roycroft: just cool
09:53 PM Thorhian: Lol the heat can be worse than the cold for me lol. I think I will be happy to work with my mill in my basement.
09:54 PM CaptHindsight: be sure to build a mill down there to large to get out through the door
09:54 PM roycroft: i've had that radiator running 24/7 for a week and a half in my fabrication shop, because i've been painting out there
09:54 PM roycroft: tomorrow i bring in the last batch of parts, so i can finally turn it off
09:55 PM roycroft: my power bill is going to be high for february, though
09:55 PM CaptHindsight: my gas bill was the highest ever in Dec and it wasn't even that cold yet
09:56 PM Thorhian: XD Cap the mill is built already. It can fit through the door, but I have to dissasemble it to move it there anyways. I also need to rework the Z axis surfaces to get rid of the binding in the upper part of it.
10:30 PM roycroft: i just wish the files would finish restoring to my new laptop
10:30 PM roycroft: it looks like another couple hours before they're done copying
