12:08 AM XXCoder: dang 2 inch snow now
12:56 AM roycroft: it's still raining here
12:56 AM roycroft: no snow or ice
12:57 AM XXCoder: interesting
12:57 AM XXCoder: its very windy here too
12:57 AM XXCoder: 40 mph or so
12:57 AM XXCoder: snowstorm
01:02 AM Deejay: moin
01:13 AM roycroft: not much wind here
01:13 AM roycroft: but i'd be willing to bet that there's snow and ice in corvallis, just to the north of here
01:16 AM roycroft: yeah, it is snowing just to the west and east of here, and it's icy just to the north
01:17 AM XXCoder: cool :)
01:19 AM roycroft: and there is quite a bit of snow in portland
03:04 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +vv by barjavel.freenode.net
03:05 AM XXCoder: also https://www.estlcam.de/ i tried that one. not bad!
03:06 AM XXCoder: it was sold to someone though so dunno
03:06 AM XXCoder: 59 usd for that one
03:06 AM XXCoder: oops
04:22 AM Tom_L: morning
04:23 AM XXCoder: hey
04:23 AM XXCoder: 3 in snow so far
04:33 AM Tom_L: 0 so far here
04:33 AM Tom_L: 1F out though
04:33 AM XXCoder: cold. its 25f something now
05:27 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:33 AM XXCoder: hey jt
05:44 AM JT-Cave: freaking cold here and a winter storm watch Sunday and Monday
05:48 AM XXCoder: i think its at over 3 inch, possibly 4 inch snow here
05:48 AM XXCoder: pretty much a decade snow... and last one was 2 years ago lol
05:49 AM XXCoder: and nearly 12 years between last one and before
07:01 AM n283 is now known as norias
07:12 AM Loetmichel: *brrr* just went to the waste burning plant to get rid of some trash... tried to open the convertible to easier load the trashbags... now something is frozen and i cant get it closed. WHY ME? (and its -8°C out here)
07:12 AM XXCoder: ouch
07:15 AM Loetmichel: *googling how to reset the ragtop motors of a BMW E46 convertible*
07:16 AM JT-Cave: you opened the top of the car at -8C?
07:17 AM Loetmichel: jep, to load the trashbags easier.
07:17 AM Loetmichel: wasnt the brightest idea, i see that now ;)
07:17 AM XXCoder: hindsight 20/20
07:17 AM JT-Cave: lol
08:20 AM htasta: ay
08:28 AM Loetmichel: JT-Cave: btw: its not cold enough to not drive open. just cold enough to make it a pain when you cant close it for parking any more because some switch or mechanic piece froze in place.
09:44 AM enleth: Loetmichel: put on goggles and leather gloves and you'll get a genuine 1920s winter driving experience
09:44 AM enleth: there used to be such a thing as driving gloves and driving goggles
10:39 AM Tom_L: in kilts?
11:22 AM ziper: what causes bearing wear like this? https://i.imgur.com/VdQkJv4.jpg
11:36 AM ziper: is it possible to remove the cage and rollers from the inner race of the tapered bearing cup? I would like to inspect the inner race
11:43 AM Tom_shop: depends how the cage is made
11:44 AM Tom_shop: if it's rivited, no
11:49 AM enleth: ziper: is that mostly discoloration, with little "feel" to it?
11:50 AM enleth: looks like surface corrosion
11:52 AM enleth: ziper: what did this bearing come out of?
11:55 AM ziper: a clausing lathe
11:55 AM ziper: the bearings are dated 1951
11:56 AM ziper: it was difficult to even move by hand before
11:57 AM ziper: there is quite a good amount of depth to it
11:57 AM ziper: not just discoloration
11:57 AM ziper: Tom_shop, the cages are solid
11:58 AM roycroft: ziper: the answer is "maybe", as tom_shop suggested
11:58 AM roycroft: some bearings are designed to be serviced like that, and some are not
11:58 AM ziper: I don't understand how they put them together, though
11:59 AM enleth: ziper: look up Timken Bearing Damage Analysis
11:59 AM ziper: thanks
11:59 AM roycroft: if you're not sure, then cleaning the bearing intact in an ultrasonic cleaner and then lubricating it anew might be an option
11:59 AM enleth: this looks like it started out as corrosive damage that caused spalling
11:59 AM enleth: anyways, look for a replacement
11:59 AM Tom_shop: if they're solid the rollers should snap out then
11:59 AM roycroft: or you may need to just replace the bearing
12:00 PM ziper: I have new outer races (that aren't marked with the grade). The lathe originally came with class 3 bearings. buying whole new class 3s are a few hundred dollars each
12:01 PM ziper: so I guess what I will do is replace the outer races since I have them, and hope the rest is ok
12:02 PM roycroft: at a few hundred dollars each, i'd agree that proactively replacing them is not wise
12:03 PM roycroft: at twenty dollars each i'd go ahead and do it
12:03 PM ziper: if they don't work after putting them together as is, maybe I will try again with the 20 dollar truck bearings
12:04 PM enleth: ziper: properly preloaded $20 bearings are likely to be better than 70-yeara-old damaged precision bearings
12:06 PM enleth: a damaged bearing is a damaged bearing, whatever class it was when new
12:07 PM enleth: and anyway, at that age, wear on the rest of the lathe might be high enough that truck bearings will be perfectly adequate
12:11 PM ziper: yes, that is pretty much what i was thinking
12:11 PM ziper: thank you all
01:41 PM unterhaus_: I thought he was going to run into the spindle at :55 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6lvnYhlez4&feature=youtu.be
01:54 PM ziper: the woodruff key holding the bullgear to the shaft was sheared off
02:31 PM JT-Shop: damn Rusty would not start today so I replaced the battery still just a click...
03:00 PM JT-Shop: hmm battery minder says it's pretty low on charge < 50
03:00 PM JT-Shop: %
03:00 PM JT-Shop: it may be going back tomorrow
03:03 PM roycroft: did you get your varnish oil, jt-shop?

03:27 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, UPS drove right by yesterday but would not come down here
03:27 PM _unreal_: sup
03:27 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, too icy?
03:27 PM roycroft: bummer
03:29 PM _unreal_: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/717411349541683212/810258354009276486/20210213_133209.jpg https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/717411349541683212/810258280441839666/20210213_133124.jpg
03:29 PM _unreal_: what cha think?
03:30 PM JT-Shop: well the south end of 521 is steep and icy but the north end is less steep and lots of big chat (crushed limestone)
03:31 PM JT-Shop: I almost went out to the highway to flag him down as I was watching him on the map
03:32 PM _unreal_: what cha think of my panel I build for my laser etcher?
03:32 PM _unreal_: little tear out around the 3 buttons but thats because I had to hand drill them a bit larger
03:32 PM _unreal_: #%@!#%$ buttons have a taper in them
04:55 PM enleth: so I have this steel part and I'm wondering what type of steel it's made of
04:56 PM enleth: any suggestions?
04:56 PM enleth: I'm free to test destructively, it's worn out and done for anyway
04:57 PM enleth: all I can think of is look for labs that do spectrometry and find the cheapest one to send a sample to
05:13 PM JT-Shop: spark test
05:14 PM enleth: oh, that's a good idea, there are some nice comparison charts online
05:25 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest7954
05:31 PM JT-Shop: you can also take some known metals and spark test them for empirical knowledge
05:32 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, gettin any weather yet?
05:33 PM enleth: JT-Shop: right. I'm thinking of using the surface grinder to do this, for repeatability and safety
05:33 PM enleth: I can crank it with lights off to see the sparks easily
05:34 PM enleth: wouldn't think of holding stuff up to a bench grinder by hand in the dark
05:34 PM XXCoder: 5 inches snow or so here
05:35 PM XXCoder: definitely deep in "decade" snow area lol
05:48 PM roycroft: it is still raining here
05:48 PM roycroft: but there is still snow just to the north, east, and west
05:53 PM JT-Shop: nothing but cold, leaking water bucket and broken trucks here
06:27 PM XXCoder: love picking https://youtu.be/FqhWwzb-RY8
06:31 PM JT-Cave: everyone is on the roost and I'm tired, going to finish making the 3/8"-24 delrin nuts tomorrow... should have thread milled them as the male threads are a bit oversize
06:32 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you see the nut i did today?
06:33 PM JT-Cave: no, waiting till free time I'm almost out of data thanks to my phone.
06:33 PM Tom_L: :)
06:33 PM XXCoder: watch on phone?
06:33 PM JT-Cave: I could but I don't have IRC on the phone only Element
06:34 PM XXCoder: just open youtube app then go to rom's profile
06:34 PM XXCoder: *t
06:34 PM Tom_L: finally figuring out a couple things. finally got the chamfer right on the first try
06:34 PM Tom_L: the yt is just cutting the threads
06:35 PM Tom_L: we know how that works
06:35 PM JT-Cave: 8.1GB of data used for the month...
06:35 PM XXCoder: yeah saw that video. cool :)
06:35 PM XXCoder: big threads
06:36 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Pressure_test_cap3.jpg
06:36 PM Tom_L: 1.5 x 16
06:36 PM Tom_L: with a pipe thread on the back side
06:37 PM XXCoder: very clean. video didnt show end result
06:37 PM Tom_L: no, that was the first pass of 2... i gave up
06:40 PM XXCoder: oh ok lol
06:49 PM JT-Cave: chow time here
06:50 PM Tom_L: ready for a long winter's nap
06:50 PM XXCoder: hey wheres my portion
06:53 PM ziper: ok I put the spindle back together
06:53 PM ziper: it feels... not great
06:54 PM XXCoder: in what way?
06:55 PM ziper: lumpy
06:55 PM ziper: I'm going to go ahead and run it for a while and see what happens
06:55 PM XXCoder: test it with indictor first
06:56 PM XXCoder: use a rod you know is very round on it
06:56 PM XXCoder: then indicate it
06:56 PM ziper: and then get the truck axle bearings if it does test bad
06:57 PM ziper: is it ok to use a VFD on the ancient motor?
06:59 PM XXCoder: dunno building side im not amazing on
07:14 PM XXCoder: ziper: why I suggested indiction is because if runout is bad enoigh it'll keep breaking tools
07:15 PM XXCoder: "lumpy" isnt great and I feel its due to very bad runout
07:15 PM ziper: I don't think I have any precision stock
07:15 PM XXCoder: hmm buy pair of 123
07:16 PM XXCoder: it dont matter if you have magnetic base indictor arm
07:16 PM enleth: ziper: generally it is, but it'll run a bit hotter and there's a very real risk of overheating if you run it very slow
07:16 PM XXCoder: just attach it to head and have arm go down over to touch rod held by spindle
07:16 PM XXCoder: then rotate spidle by hand (safely!)
07:17 PM XXCoder: see how much it moves
07:17 PM enleth: ziper: VFDs introduce a lot of high frequency noise in the output and old motors are not designed for that, so they get quite a bit of induction heating from that
07:17 PM ziper: I need indicator bases too
07:17 PM enleth: ziper: other than that, a VFD is fine
07:18 PM XXCoder: chinese ones well you might need to rebuild it. i certainly had on my cheap indictor arm
