02:27 AM Loetmichel: ehhh... i should really get a new smartphone... just searching for a few pictures of a device i made in 2019... usb2.0 is sooo slow... and it doesent help that this phone has a few k pictures since 2014 stored on it... :)
03:26 AM Deejay: moin
05:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:00 AM XXCoder: yo
06:12 AM JT-Cave: national weather service local weather is N/A
06:13 AM XXCoder: uhoh
07:36 AM JavaBean: far west texas here.... let it snow, let it snow, DUDE FSCK'N LET IT SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!
07:36 AM XXCoder: yeah if snow flake touches hot sidewalk they close schools
07:38 AM JavaBean: to be fair, if a drop of rain hits the roadways, there are about a million car crashes
07:40 AM XXCoder: lol
07:44 AM JavaBean: dude, racecar "slicks" have more rubber depth than what you usually see walking around... it took a while, but i stopped "noticing" the tire belts that some/many of the locals drive on
08:02 AM JavaBean: rubber depth??? meant tread depth. need that second "coffee"
08:03 AM XXCoder: "coffee"
08:04 AM JavaBean: 6-ish "shots of espresso" with half 'n half and sugar
08:08 AM JavaBean is now known as SquirrelMan5k
08:08 AM SquirrelMan5k: XXCoder https://www.youtube.com/embed/zVw5a4OjcIE?start=15&end=55&autoplay=1
08:09 AM XXCoder: lol
08:16 AM SquirrelMan5k is now known as JavaBean
08:36 AM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
09:48 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:49 AM * JT-Shop fixed my NIC problem... threw out the cheap patch cord
09:55 AM roycroft: i put an oil-filled space heater in my fabrication shop yesterday - it's 8 degrees in there right now (-1 outside)
09:55 AM roycroft: i just shot some primer anyway
09:55 AM roycroft: hopefully it will be ok
09:56 AM roycroft: the primer is normally ready to recoat in an hour, but i won't get back to it for several hours, and it should warm up at least a wee bit more by then
09:56 AM * roycroft is ready for spring
10:51 AM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlpkmEEhFqc
10:51 AM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fm2dOlBWRs
10:56 AM eraserhd3: roycroft: sheesh, what latitude are you at?
10:56 AM eraserhd3 is now known as eraserhd
11:28 AM roycroft: just south of latitude 45
12:08 PM * JT-Shop came home to a garage and machine shop full of smoke!!!
12:09 PM roycroft: uh oh
12:09 PM roycroft: hopefully it was just the wood stove backing up a bit
12:10 PM satiowadahc: Remember to check your smoke and CO detectors on a regular basis, bonus points for cellular/wifi signals
12:17 PM JT-Shop: for the last month or two I've been stacking a few splits of too moist firewood on top of the wood stove spaced off about 5" with some scrap metal... one started to smolder while I was gone
12:28 PM roycroft: then you were very lucky today
12:37 PM JT-Shop: yup
12:39 PM satiowadahc: Any actual damage?
12:42 PM JT-Shop: no, just a smoky shop
12:43 PM JT-Shop: clear now but still smells like my smoker
01:05 PM satiowadahc: Hang some bacon for a while :P
01:13 PM unterhaus: if you get a cr2032 sold by amazon is it legit?
01:20 PM satiowadahc: I spose you could _charge_ it back to them if it wasn't
02:42 PM perry_j1987: hows it going guys
02:43 PM Tom_L: super
02:45 PM roycroft: it goes
02:45 PM roycroft: i'm in a cycle of trying to paint when it's way too cold
02:46 PM roycroft: so my project is going to take days longer than it should, due to the increased time between coats and curing
02:46 PM roycroft: but it will still go faster than if i waited until spring
02:46 PM unterhaus: I'm glad my shop has a room small enough I can heat it
02:47 PM unterhaus: probably should turn off the heater now though
02:47 PM unterhaus: roycroft, you saw that video about the antique furniture repair guy, right?
02:48 PM roycroft: yes
02:48 PM unterhaus: he had a squeeze bottle of hide glue in his pot
02:48 PM roycroft: the one who was restoring the 18th century stool
02:48 PM roycroft: yes, old brown
02:48 PM roycroft: which is probably the best of the liquid hide glues
02:48 PM unterhaus: is that a brand?
02:48 PM roycroft: it is
02:48 PM roycroft: and it's rather expensive
02:49 PM unterhaus: okay, like titebond hide glue then?
02:49 PM roycroft: no, that stuff is crap
02:49 PM roycroft: old brown is much better
02:49 PM unterhaus: other than that
02:49 PM roycroft: it's best to use standard hide glue
02:49 PM unterhaus: but the old brown stays liquid
02:49 PM roycroft: if you need to make it thinner you can thin it a bit
02:49 PM roycroft: it won't be as strong, but you can do that
02:50 PM roycroft: if you just need more open time you can add urea to the hide glue
02:50 PM roycroft: that won't thin it, but it will give you more like 15 minutes open time
02:50 PM roycroft: at the loss of a little strength
02:50 PM roycroft: but not as much a loss as if you water it down
02:51 PM roycroft: old brown won't work well at room temperature - it needs to be at least slightly warmed
02:51 PM unterhaus: I see
02:51 PM roycroft: 30 degrees or so
02:51 PM unterhaus: lots of luthiers use titebond hide glue, at least for repairs
02:51 PM roycroft: i have a glue pot, so i just used granulated hide glue
02:51 PM roycroft: that's too bad
02:52 PM roycroft: they should at least be using old brown
02:52 PM unterhaus: it expires, just like anything other glue
02:52 PM roycroft: the only good thing about titebond hide glue is that it's somewhat ubiquitous
02:52 PM roycroft: old brown can only be found at specialty shops
02:53 PM unterhaus: I looked for it and had to buy it from stewmac
02:53 PM roycroft: i mean, titebond hide glue is better than yellow glue
02:53 PM unterhaus: toolsforworkingwood.com has old brown, I have bought from them
02:53 PM roycroft: i shouldn't totally dis it
02:53 PM roycroft: woodcraft carry old brown
02:54 PM unterhaus: I see it has an expiration date, that's good
02:54 PM roycroft: yes, it keeps for 6 months or so in the fridge
02:54 PM roycroft: but as with all hide glue, if it's been around for a little while, test it before you use it
02:55 PM unterhaus: I just need to experiement some more with HHG
02:57 PM roycroft: https://highfillcustomwoodworks.com/shop/
02:58 PM roycroft: that's some good hide glue, if 192 gram strength works for you
03:01 PM unterhaus: This was interesting "The glue manufactures have mentioned that glue gains strength if it's made, allowed to gel, then reheated."
03:01 PM roycroft: yes
03:01 PM roycroft: i think i mentioned this to you before
03:01 PM unterhaus: yeah
03:01 PM roycroft: soaking it for a long time, then heating, then reheating
03:39 PM roycroft: my bandsaw fence is in portland, so it may arrive on time tomorrow, although it is supposed to snow in portland this afternoon
03:39 PM roycroft: so who knows what will happen
03:57 PM JT-Shop: I need a new phone no apps work on my s4 anymore should I get a fully unlocked or a verizon? I'm on verizon
04:08 PM perry_j1987: i keep toying with the idea of getting a non smartphone again heh
04:10 PM JT-Shop: my bank app quit working so I need to get a phone that is not 20 years old lol
04:11 PM JT-Shop: oh heck it's only 8 years old
04:13 PM roycroft: no apps working your phone == abililty to get work done and stay off thephone :)
04:14 PM roycroft: but if you get a new phone i think it's worth paying extra for an unlocked one
04:14 PM JT-Shop: I turn off my CC's on the phone when not in use
04:14 PM JT-Shop: ok
04:15 PM roycroft: the cellular market is too unstable to be locked into one vendor
04:15 PM roycroft: imo
04:19 PM satiowadahc: Sonim 3 Year warranty is longer than most contracts. and unconditional
04:19 PM unterhaus: roycroft what bandsaw fence did you get?
04:20 PM satiowadahc: I dropped it once... and ran over it... with a forklift... carrying a 5000lb safe... slightly marked the screen
04:20 PM roycroft: i ended up getting the shop fox
04:21 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005W0YDBK
04:22 PM unterhaus: I keep looking at that one
04:22 PM roycroft: the grizzly is the same fence exactly, but $50 more
04:23 PM roycroft: folks complain that the fence cannot be adjusted for blade drift, but grizzly told me it could
04:23 PM roycroft: i'll know soon if they are correct
04:23 PM roycroft: the one problem that i see with that fence is that it has no instructions at all
04:23 PM roycroft: just a parts diagram
04:24 PM roycroft: but i think i can overcome that problem
04:24 PM roycroft: it's just a saw fence
04:24 PM unterhaus: you can generally correct drift by adjusting the saw, I think
04:25 PM roycroft: drift is a function of the blade, not the machine
04:25 PM unterhaus: I have a 1" carbide tip resawing blade and I don't have much trouble with drift
04:26 PM roycroft: higher quality blades don't usually have much, if any drift
04:26 PM unterhaus: but I made a fence and I'm too lazy to fix it
04:26 PM roycroft: and if you paid $120+ for a blade you should expect it to run pretty true
04:26 PM unterhaus: I forget, it's 20 years old :)
04:34 PM xtragreen: Are Loc-Line and Jeton coolant lines interchangeable ?
04:51 PM roycroft: holy moly
04:51 PM roycroft: it is snowing
04:55 PM roycroft: and it's only 2 degrees, so if this keeps up it may actually stick
04:55 PM roycroft: the snow level was supposed to be at 300m today, but i'm at 150m, so that's not true
04:59 PM roycroft: from what i hear, figz probably has some snow as well
05:07 PM roycroft: ack, mischan
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: xtragreen: "Jeton provides an extensive range of coolant hose solutions, which are fully adjustable and interchangeable with other systems, including Loc-Line and Linear-Loc."
05:09 PM xtragreen: Hahaha...great !
05:12 PM xtragreen: I just bought 80 feet of 1/4" "FMT' ( Fastenal rebrand of Jeton ) for $55
05:12 PM xtragreen: Thanks.
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.jeton.com.tw/en/product/product_detail-5
05:15 PM xtragreen: If you you look at some of the listings on ebay, like the 1/4" manifold and nozzels, they are using the same pictures for both. Is it possible that they are made by the same company, and marketed in US as Loc-Line, and Jeton in EU ?
05:26 PM CaptHindsight: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v21/rykrisp/visecaddy.jpg
05:31 PM XXCoder: lol nice
05:32 PM xtragreen: I see the pictures of the doll skeletons. Jeton is in Taiwan...they probably make all three lines
05:32 PM xtragreen: Capt: Tell me about the vice ?
05:47 PM unterhaus: looks like a kurt vise
05:47 PM XXCoder: it is
05:47 PM XXCoder: i am not aware of any clone that looks like kurt
05:47 PM unterhaus: I have a non-clone that is the same color
05:48 PM unterhaus: should have bought a clone
05:49 PM XXCoder: whats wrong with your kurt vise?
05:58 PM roycroft: the snow has turned back into rain
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: xtragreen: just a fun pic, not mine
06:41 PM unterhaus: XXCoder, my vise is not quite a clone, the back jaw doesn't come off so it's not flat
06:41 PM unterhaus: with a kurt you can put the jaws on the outside
06:42 PM unterhaus: so you can hold a bigger piece of metal
06:42 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:42 PM XXCoder: yours cant?
06:42 PM unterhaus: nope, solid
06:42 PM XXCoder: wow weird
06:42 PM XXCoder: flatness problem can be fixed by grinder
06:42 PM unterhaus: IIRC, it's Japanese
06:43 PM unterhaus: the fixed part is the height of the jaw, so different than the moving part in front
06:43 PM XXCoder: "paint" all ober top with perment ink pen, then grind all of it, few passes to ensure flatness
06:43 PM XXCoder: differing heights.
06:43 PM XXCoder: man that vise is weird lol
06:43 PM unterhaus: I suspect it's very flat, just 1cm different height
06:44 PM XXCoder: yeah i misunderstood what you mean by not flat
06:44 PM unterhaus: too bad the machine shop at work is gone, grinder got sold
06:44 PM unterhaus: I wish I had access to a grinder
06:45 PM * Tom_L gives unterhaus an angle grinder
06:46 PM unterhaus: A couple of people were trying to talk me into getting a cnc surface grinder
06:46 PM unterhaus: Didn't have a spare $40k sitting around
06:47 PM Tom_L: i'm plenty happy with my shars vise
06:48 PM unterhaus: I probably will get something like that once the mill works
06:48 PM Tom_L: just wish i had a matching pair sometimes
06:50 PM roycroft: unterhaus: Ãhttps://www.wpatrickedwards.com/images/pdf/Why_not_period_glue.pdf
06:50 PM roycroft: that's the guy who makes old brown glue
06:51 PM Tom_L: gawd that crap looks familiar :)
06:53 PM Tom_L: nothing like the 'hot glue' of today
07:04 PM roycroft: the stuff i use is made in usa, and it's a mix of hide and bone glue
07:10 PM unterhaus: if you are gluing something that might have to be reversed, like a guitar neck or fretboard, it's irresponsible to not use hide glue
07:11 PM unterhaus: although original titebond is close, it can be steamed apart
07:11 PM unterhaus: but you have to clean it off the pieces before you can glue again
07:24 PM CaptHindsight: or making a guitar that can not be serviced, buy and buy again model vs buy and repair/restore/refurbish
07:26 PM CaptHindsight: logical fallacy: iPhones are the most popular, so must be the best and not repairable, not repairable is best, consume and conform
07:36 PM roycroft: i recently replaced the battery in my iphone
07:38 PM satiowadahc: which model? some are more readily repairable then others
07:39 PM roycroft: iphone 6
07:39 PM roycroft: it was not fun
07:40 PM roycroft: but it's doable
07:40 PM roycroft: and it should last another 5 years easily
07:40 PM satiowadahc: two screws and 18 gallons of glue IIRC?
07:40 PM roycroft: no glue
07:40 PM roycroft: a whole lot of screws
07:40 PM roycroft: the interesting thing that apple use in their iphones is the "glue tape"
07:41 PM roycroft: two strips of a stiff plastic with a rubbery adhesive on each side
07:41 PM roycroft: it lays down in the phone and the battery lays on top of it
07:42 PM satiowadahc: I always forget about the different models. Any model this side of the 49th has way more glue in it then anything southward
07:42 PM roycroft: it sticks very very well, but when it's time to remove the battery one pulls on the tabs that stick out the end of the battery, and it pulls the glue-tape out
07:42 PM satiowadahc: even iphone6-iphone6
07:42 PM roycroft: leaving the battery totally unstuck
07:43 PM satiowadahc: is it a mylar tape?
07:43 PM roycroft: probably
07:43 PM roycroft: it seems stiffer than most mylar, but otherwise similar
07:44 PM satiowadahc: Or just an ESD safe adhesive tape
07:45 PM roycroft: i think the point of the tape is to adhere the battery well, but make it easily 100% removable
07:47 PM satiowadahc: linuxcnc tests... running 95C, warms the room a little bit
07:47 PM satiowadahc: surprising its that repairable
08:01 PM unterhaus: they probably got tired of the batteries catching on fire when they repaired them
08:01 PM unterhaus: if a lipo is stuck down directly with glue, it's not a great idea to unstick it
08:02 PM unterhaus: the tape sounds like a good solution
08:03 PM roycroft: it's really weird stuff
08:03 PM roycroft: it's really sticky, but dry
08:03 PM roycroft: so when you pull it out it doesn't get your fingers messy if you touch it
08:13 PM satiowadahc: someone definitly made a good design _call_
08:35 PM Tom_L: kapton tape maybe?
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: PSA
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: maybe on kapton
08:44 PM Tom_L: kapton is pretty easy to spot
08:44 PM roycroft: the adhesive obviously has much greater tensile strength than shear strength
08:44 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Adhesive-Stripe-Replacement-Iphone/dp/B00WPZ5VIO
09:16 PM perry_j1987: thinking of trying a slotting op on the 6040
09:17 PM gregcnc: 0.1mm per pass?
09:17 PM perry_j1987: probably heh
09:18 PM perry_j1987: some day get a real mill heh
09:28 PM roycroft: i was pretty pleased when i was cutting slots in some 3/8" 1018 last weekend
09:28 PM roycroft: i used a brand new end mill, and was able to make passes 0.075" deep
09:28 PM roycroft: that with a 3/8" diameter mill
09:29 PM roycroft: usually i can cut about 0.050" in a go with a mill that size
09:29 PM roycroft: new tooling is nice :)
09:29 PM Tom_L: carbide or hss?
09:29 PM roycroft: hss
09:29 PM roycroft: keep in mind my "mill" is pretty small
09:30 PM Tom_L: so is mine but i try to use carbide exclusively
09:30 PM roycroft: i was getting really nice chips
09:30 PM roycroft: small curly 'c' shape chips, straw to light blue in color
09:30 PM roycroft: so things were dialed in pretty nicely
09:32 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:32 PM XXCoder: yo
09:32 PM roycroft: hi
09:32 PM roycroft: do you have any snow?
09:38 PM CaptHindsight: we got less than 1" (25.4mm)
09:39 PM CaptHindsight: some drifting, high winds
09:39 PM jdh]: just got home from biking in shorts & short sleeves
09:40 PM CaptHindsight: jdh]: warmer there or just a cold lover?
09:40 PM jdh]: was 60's for the most part
09:41 PM CaptHindsight: we get about 2 weeks of 60's in the spring and fall
09:41 PM roycroft: it's been an incredibly mild winter here
09:42 PM CaptHindsight: the rest of the year is either colder or warmer
09:42 PM jdh]: here too. and a few days in jan-mar
09:42 PM roycroft: lots of rain, but hardly any nights below freezing
09:42 PM jdh]: well, I guess actually lots of days in jan-mar
09:43 PM CaptHindsight: was on the avg to mild side here, just recently we are down to single digit F's at night (-12-17C)
09:43 PM roycroft: it only got up to 2 here today
09:43 PM CaptHindsight: and odd winds from the east
09:44 PM CaptHindsight: when large low pressure systems pass to the south we get the east winds off the backside
09:46 PM roycroft: i remember that
09:47 PM roycroft: and the snow coming in off lake michigan dumping on the east side of chicagl
09:47 PM roycroft: chicago
10:08 PM roycroft: and we just got a new winter weather advisory
10:09 PM roycroft: snow between i5 and the coast range between now and tomorrow morning
10:09 PM roycroft: i'm glad i'm not going anywhere
10:25 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: inch or cm?
10:26 PM CaptHindsight: or sorry i5
10:36 PM roycroft: 5cm on the valley floor by morning
10:36 PM roycroft: not much, but people around here do not know how to drive in snow
10:36 PM roycroft: and we don't salt our roads at all
10:36 PM roycroft: and don't plow any but the arterials
10:54 PM XXCoder: roy we use beet juice or some chemical thats not salt here
10:54 PM XXCoder: looks like might snow tomorrow
10:59 PM roycroft: we use sand, and verylittel of that
11:05 PM XXCoder: cool
