12:25 AM _unreal_: OMG.. I'M SO tired of the election BS. georgia is flooding the internet with reports AGAIN of "voting machine issues"
01:56 AM Deejay: moin
04:55 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:52 AM Tom_L: morning
05:58 AM norias: hi
06:55 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, https://jethornton.github.io/stdeb/gui.html
06:56 AM XXCoder: bang
07:04 AM JT-Cave: chickens are up and roaming around...
07:05 AM JT-Cave: not sunrise yet
07:06 AM JT-Cave: the menu image makes me think my mouse pointer is there
08:59 AM perry_j1987: morning
09:16 AM perry_j1987: everybody got their coffee?
09:26 AM perry_j1987: https://www.ebay.com/itm/plitron-toroidal-power-product-7251-x0-00-201251-input-120-VAC-P-N-H27Z82-7-/123556806683 this is the toroid i got in this lathe
09:27 AM perry_j1987: biggest cap on the board is 18,000uf im assuming thats for the 48v tap
10:32 AM gregcnc: if it's in the machine already you shouldn't need to change anything
10:56 AM gregcnc: Tom_L found you one of those mills https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=1407&acctid=3407
11:19 AM ziper: is prussian blue still in layout fluid?
11:22 AM roycroft: i can get prussian blue in a paste at napa (auto parts chain in the us), but i don't think it's used in the common layout fluids like dykem
11:25 AM ziper: yeah, looks like dykem is a few percent of methyl violet and malachite green
11:25 AM ziper: and also a few percent of nitrocellulose, whats that doing there?
11:36 AM roycroft: i've no idea why dykem is formulated as it is
11:36 AM roycroft: nor why it no longer uses prussian blue, other than perhaps the cost to manufacture it
11:39 AM Rab: ziper, nitrocellulose is widely used as a lacquer. It's a typical primary ingredient in nail polish, for example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacquer#Nitrocellulose_lacquers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nail_polish#Ingredients
11:40 AM ziper: neat
11:41 AM Rab: So I'd guess it has favorable properties for dykem, which is essentially a very thin lacquer. It doesn't have to hold up forever, but you don't want it changing dimension or cracking as it dries.
11:43 AM roycroft: that would make sense - it would form the film that holds the pigment in place as the solvent evaporates
11:44 AM roycroft: the prussian blue that i get in tubes is suspended in grease
11:45 AM roycroft: great for checking flatness, not so great for doing layout work
11:59 AM JT-Shop: great for painting your fingers :)
12:03 PM jdh]: This is not to be confused with the non-drying engineer's blue, made by mixing Prussian blue with oil or grease
12:04 PM roycroft: that is the prussian blue-based product to which i am referring, that i procure from napa
01:17 PM ziper: jesus christ I absolutely destroyed this part. is hand tapping aluminum usually so hard?
01:17 PM JT-Shop: no
01:19 PM ziper: how do you keep it straight?
01:20 PM JT-Shop: I just look at the tap from two sides 90° apart as I start the tap
01:22 PM ziper: i'm wondering if I drilled it too small
01:23 PM gregcnc: Is this an M2 or M20 thread?
01:23 PM ziper: m8x1.25
01:23 PM ziper: i drilled it to 17/64
01:24 PM gregcnc: that should work
01:24 PM ziper: i should probably just find a center and use the drill press
01:25 PM JT-Shop: yea 17/64 is the right size for m8x1.25
01:25 PM JT-Shop: is it "gummy" aluminum?
01:25 PM ziper: yeah, I suppose so
01:26 PM JT-Shop: that is harder to tap, are you using an aluminum tapping fluid or soap?
01:26 PM ziper: i went in dry
01:26 PM JT-Shop: use some dish soap
01:28 PM JT-Shop: I have a set of these when I use the mill to hand tap https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/05041868
01:38 PM Tom_L: gregcnc, find me a place to house it that cheap too :)
01:40 PM roycroft: get a tap guide, ziper
01:43 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0076OAODG/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0076OAODG/
01:43 PM roycroft: ack
01:43 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0076OAODG/
01:43 PM Tom_L: never tap a dry hole
01:43 PM roycroft: once is enough :)
01:44 PM roycroft: i prefer to tap in place when milling, but when i have to do freehand tapping i use those guides, especially for smaller thread sizes
03:02 PM JT-Shop: just picked up the check for the fence project so that one has been put to bed finally
03:02 PM JT-Shop: https://imagebin.ca/v/5nLiqKpx2xWI
03:22 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:07 PM perry_j1987: hows it going guys
04:08 PM perry_j1987: just heard DC is in lockdown
04:08 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, this channel tries to avoid any discussions of the news
04:09 PM buzzmarshall: lol... vote in a narcisistic dictator and now he don't wanna leave
04:09 PM buzzmarshall: sure making the americans look dumb at a world level
04:09 PM buzzmarshall: i fee bad for them
04:09 PM perry_j1987: i just want things to hold together long enough for me to get this new CNC lathe working heh
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: offends those on the koolaid diet
04:09 PM buzzmarshall: one man
04:09 PM buzzmarshall: the cult off trump and he's crippled the us
04:10 PM buzzmarshall: ya ...i'll leave it alone
04:20 PM perry_j1987: should have my g320x drivers friday
04:20 PM perry_j1987: along with bridge recitifers and caps
04:28 PM perry_j1987: ah forgot i need to order another parport bob
05:44 PM JT-Cave: oppd
05:44 PM JT-Cave: s
05:46 PM Tom_L: huh?
05:46 PM JT-Cave: 6.66% of Missouri has had or has COVID-19
05:47 PM JT-Cave: opps I forgot to order another paraport bot
05:47 PM JT-Cave: bob even
05:47 PM XXCoder: 1% evil lol
05:47 PM JT-Cave: lol
05:48 PM JT-Cave: wow rain/snow likely tonight
05:48 PM Tom_L: i heard rain about here
05:48 PM JT-Cave: too warm to stick though
05:48 PM Tom_L: i heard about rain here
05:48 PM Tom_L: maybe you'll get the 5-6" we got earlier
05:49 PM JT-Cave: FedSex is getting later and later here
05:49 PM JT-Cave: I hope not
05:49 PM Tom_L: fedex & ups are merging did ya know?
05:49 PM Tom_L: FedUP
05:49 PM XXCoder: that old joke heh
05:49 PM Tom_L: i know
05:50 PM Tom_L: but still makes me chuckle sometimes
05:50 PM Tom_L: gotta have something to laugh about
05:50 PM JT-Cave: usps==Unbelievably Slow Package Service
05:50 PM Tom_L: picked up a chuck for those adapters i made today
05:51 PM JT-Cave: I picked up a check for the fence today
05:51 PM Tom_L: saw that
05:51 PM Tom_L: i'd rather have the check..
05:52 PM JT-Cave: fedsex is here
05:52 PM Tom_L: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
05:52 PM Tom_L: that fell by the wayside years ago
05:57 PM JT-Cave: back with the pony express I think
05:58 PM XXCoder: tom theres now words "as long as we are safe" at end now
05:58 PM JT-Cave: I gotta say the local USPS does a good job and goes out of there way to help
05:58 PM XXCoder: honestly while they still have that motto yeah they make sure to stay safe nowdaus
05:59 PM JT-Cave: the poor Fedex guy still had 20-30 packages in his van to deliver
06:00 PM unterhaus: at least UPS hasn't been bailing on their amazon deliveries and marking it delivered when they drop it off at the post office
06:00 PM unterhaus: that always infuriated me
06:00 PM unterhaus: don't say it's delivered at least
06:05 PM roycroft: none of that stuff stays them, tom_l, but the fear of having to pay them overtime stops them dead in their tracks
06:06 PM CaptHindsight: off to USPS myself, will see how long 2 and 3-day Priority actually takes now
06:06 PM JT-Cave: quite a while usually
06:07 PM CaptHindsight: probably past cut off time today anyway
06:09 PM * JT-Cave wonders why the pullets all crowd to the ends of the perch at the start of the night???
06:19 PM infoproxy is now known as infornography
08:53 PM _unreal_: making some progress finally
08:53 PM _unreal_: with my laser etcher that I purchased and am putting together
09:28 PM ziper: JT-Cave, roycroft I'm just going to order the part. they are only 3 dollars. no more wasting my time
09:30 PM roycroft: sometimes that's the prudent thing to do
09:32 PM ziper: a bit shameful but ah well i'll just try harder next time
09:32 PM XXCoder: ziper theres nice project of tapping "press"
09:32 PM XXCoder: its very simple too. base, strong rod up then horzional from top of that rod
09:32 PM XXCoder: it has hole for rod with handle on top and bottom has chuck
09:32 PM XXCoder: makes tapping very easy because its quite rigid
09:33 PM ziper: do you have a picture?
09:34 PM XXCoder: ill try to find it
09:34 PM XXCoder: project i saw was stronger version but idea is same https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13zPWhYant8
09:35 PM ziper: yes I see
09:35 PM ziper: I think I would be better off putting the effort into getting a center I could put in my drill chuck and a decent vise for the drill press
09:36 PM XXCoder: if I never need to tap lots of parts im definitely making one
09:36 PM XXCoder: *ever
09:37 PM ziper: I never had this much trouble with steel parts I have tapped in the past
09:38 PM ziper: I wonder if my cheap tap had less taper, or I just wasn't used to the soft aluminum
09:39 PM XXCoder: dont know, though with alum you should back off each half turn cutting
09:39 PM XXCoder: thats what I usually do
09:39 PM XXCoder: alum can get gummy
09:40 PM XXCoder: basically 2 step forward one step back till tap is done
09:40 PM roycroft: did you get a home center tap?
09:41 PM XXCoder: nah havent needed one at home
09:41 PM roycroft: i was talking to ziper
09:41 PM XXCoder: oops sorry lol
09:41 PM roycroft: no worries
09:41 PM ziper: home center?
09:42 PM roycroft: hardware store/big box store
09:42 PM ziper: worse
09:42 PM ziper: harbor freight
09:42 PM roycroft: oh
09:42 PM roycroft: then 1. it was crappy
09:42 PM XXCoder: harbor fright
09:42 PM roycroft: and 2. it was a plug tap
09:43 PM roycroft: if you're hand tapping you should use a starter/taper tap, not a plug tap
09:43 PM ziper: youre right, it was
09:43 PM ziper: how did you know?
09:43 PM ziper: the decent hardware store ones have more taper
09:43 PM roycroft: because that's all harbor freight sell
09:43 PM ziper: whats the point of the plug taps?
09:44 PM roycroft: thread chasing
09:44 PM roycroft: if you're hand tapping that's the only application i can see for them
09:44 PM ziper: if I had a proper, rigid, square setup they would work well, right?
09:44 PM roycroft: if you have a tap holder or are tapping in a machine like a lathe or milling machine, they can be used, as long as you do not tap under power
09:45 PM XXCoder: love this channel https://youtu.be/k82T0T_4UHg
09:45 PM roycroft: if you're hand tapping, though, you should start with a taper tap
09:45 PM roycroft: if you use a tap guide like i liked to earlier, a plug tap can work ok if you're careful
09:45 PM roycroft: linked
09:47 PM ziper: with a sufficiently good setup, can you start with a bottoming tap too, or do you always need to start the thread with a somewhat tapered tap and then follow it with the bottoming tap?
09:48 PM roycroft: i would never start with a bottom tap
09:48 PM roycroft: under no circumstances
09:48 PM roycroft: that said, some folks recommend taper, plug, bottom tap in sequence
09:49 PM ziper: even, like, rigid tapping?
09:49 PM roycroft: a taper tap followed by a bottom tap is sufficient for most blind hold applications, in my experience
09:49 PM roycroft: i don't see a need for the plug tap, usually
09:49 PM roycroft: if you're tapping 316 stainless steel you might want to use all three
09:50 PM Tom_L: not unless you need an extra thread at the bottom of a blind hole
09:50 PM roycroft: on a limited budget i would feel comfortable buying a set of taper taps and a set of bottom taps
09:51 PM roycroft: or maybe even a set of taper taps and individual bottom taps as needed
09:51 PM roycroft: and not bother with plug taps
09:52 PM ziper: I wonder if i could grind the taper off the hf ones without ruining the temper
09:52 PM roycroft: what temper? :)
09:52 PM ziper: exactly
09:52 PM ziper: well, thank you roycroft
09:52 PM ziper: i appreciate the advice
09:52 PM roycroft: i will tell you a dirty dark secret of mine now
09:53 PM roycroft: i own a harbor freight metric tap and die set
09:53 PM Tom_L: i'm sorry
09:53 PM roycroft: i have an occasional need to tap or thread chase a largeish metric fastener
09:54 PM roycroft: having a set like that can come in handy
09:54 PM ziper: that is the original reason I bought it
09:54 PM roycroft: for my day-to-day needs, which for me is m12 and smaller, i don't use the hf stuff at all
09:54 PM ziper: previous owner of a car had cross threaded a bolt going into the wheel hub
09:54 PM ziper: I upped it one size, and it worked fine
09:54 PM ziper: I think I even did it in situ without removing the hub
09:55 PM ziper: m12 or m14, something in there
09:57 PM roycroft: i think i've used that set once to tap a new hole
09:57 PM roycroft: every other use has been thread repair/chasing
10:14 PM enleth: ziper: check out thread repair coils
10:56 PM sorki is now known as srk
