#linuxcnc Calendar
12:04 AM CaptHindsight: #homecmos has been quiet the past 6+ years :)
01:16 AM Deejay: moin
05:16 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:29 AM XXCoder: yo
05:43 AM enleth: mrec: single flute downcutting are mostly for milling slots in closed PVC tubing such as window frame extrusions
05:43 AM enleth: chips end up inside and stay there, less cleanup
05:45 AM Tom_L: morning
05:45 AM XXCoder: yo
05:47 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, @ 8:22PM http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~tom-itx/irc/logs/%23linuxcnc/2021-01-04.html
05:50 AM JT-Cave: thanks
05:50 AM JT-Cave: I just built a stock debian 10 so I'll test there
05:58 AM Tom_L: yeah mine was pretty bare
06:18 AM mrec: enleth: it might be interesting for acrylic sheet
06:24 AM mrec: at least that's what I hope
08:32 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, updated the tutorial
08:50 AM unterhaus_: I learned of a potential consulting job a month ago. Client finally contacted me, wants to know if I can complete it "expeditiously" Huh
09:22 AM serp: please complete it by a month ago
10:06 AM mrec: is there a way to use a manual z tool setter with linuxcnc?
10:09 AM rs[m]: what is a manual z tool setter
10:10 AM mrec: https://www.perfect-cnc.com/en/prod_intro.php?cpt=1206
10:10 AM mrec: should be gauge z tool setter
10:21 AM rs[m]: so the question is what do you mean with "integrate"
10:21 AM rs[m]: it seems you operate this by jogging to zero
10:21 AM rs[m]: and then setting tool offset
10:24 AM unterhaus: yes, you would use it by setting up the tool table
10:25 AM unterhaus: curious what they patented about that since it looks to be a copy
10:25 AM rs[m]: gmoccapy has a function allows you to enter Z value and it calculates tool offset so current Z is entered value
10:31 AM unterhaus: that works unless you want to change tools. So I probably would do it that way
10:35 AM rs[m]: changing tool offset while running a program isn't really possible with linuxcnc AFAIK
10:36 AM rs[m]: manually changing tool offset
10:38 AM mrec: rs[m]: I think that is the answer thanks.
10:39 AM mrec: at least I can use that tool for checking the repeatability
10:52 AM veegee_: Guys, important: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1543486981
10:52 AM veegee_: is this worth it?
10:52 AM veegee_: I'm going to go and take a look today to make sure the slide ways are not too worn out
10:52 AM veegee_: It's a universal mill so a bit more rigid than my bridgeport
10:53 AM veegee_: for $1,000 I'm thinking can't really go wrong unless the slide ways are totally worn and it can't hold its tolerances
10:53 AM veegee_: also 40 taper
10:54 AM rs[m]: mrec: you can split your programs into one program per tool
10:54 AM rs[m]: mrec: then it is possible to use the tool setter
11:02 AM Rab: veegee_, looks like a steal to me...if it's not trashed. The universal mill part could mean there's a complex power train which might be hard to service or refurbish.
11:03 AM veegee_: I don't mind taking things apart
11:04 AM Rab: Nor do I, but without replacement parts, it'll never go back together.
11:04 AM Rab: Ideally they will still have it under power so you can check out the spindle.
11:07 AM Rab: From what I have seen the Taiwanese vertical mills are super generic, it's possible the universal mill design isn't too obscure.
11:21 AM enleth: meanwhile, I found this: https://m.olx.pl/oferta/frezarka-uniwersalna-ciezka-bridgeport-2s-CID619-IDGWhVE.html?reason=
11:21 AM mrec: rs[m]: I read about that ... that's exactly what I don't want to do.
11:21 AM enleth: $1500
11:21 AM enleth: looos excellent, seller claims it's fully operational
11:22 AM enleth: only problem: I have nowhere to put it
11:22 AM enleth: *looks
11:23 AM gregcnc: bridgeport in Poland, would have been a fortune back in the day
11:23 AM rs[m]: mrec: so you want to pause program, change tool, set tool offset manually, and continue?
11:24 AM mrec: rs[m]: I'll get a digital tool setter..
11:24 AM enleth: gregcnc: I suspect this isn't actually a Bridgeport, looks like a rebranded Adcock&Shipley or something like this
11:25 AM mrec: rs[m]: but yes I want it to pause adjust and continue
11:25 AM enleth: just sold by Bridgeport UK
11:25 AM gregcnc: most people write separate programs for each tool
11:25 AM gregcnc: ah makes more sense
11:25 AM enleth: still, looks like a damn nice machine
11:25 AM rs[m]: mrec: you could achieve that with some programming i think
11:26 AM enleth: with that double swiveling vertical head
11:26 AM rs[m]: mrec: but better get a wired tool setter
11:26 AM enleth: I'd be scraping out money for it right now if I had a little bit more space
11:28 AM rs[m]: mrec: something like this https://vers.by/en/blog/user-guide/vers-tsm
11:33 AM mrec: rs[m]: your link doesn't work
11:33 AM mrec: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/32854963891.html
11:33 AM mrec: I thought about that one.
11:45 AM unterhaus_: are the electronic ones just switches?
11:47 AM mrec: yes
11:47 AM rs[m]: mrec: how does it not work?
11:47 AM mrec: rs[m]: https://vers.by/en/blog/user-guide/vers-tsm seems like the server does not reply?
11:47 AM rs[m]: mrec: the one i linked to allows to measure tool diameter also. not affiliated
11:48 AM mrec: This site can’t be reachedvers.by took too long to respond.
11:48 AM Rab: Works here, although it took a few seconds to load.
11:48 AM rs[m]: must be issue or your end of the pipe, does work here. but the site is in belarussia, so YMMV
11:49 AM mrec: I can get it via proxy
11:51 AM unterhaus_: someone on the developers list was complaining about a month ago because they were getting massive messages over the network when they split lcnc
11:51 AM unterhaus_: apparently it's constantly sending the tool table
11:52 AM unterhaus_: suggests to me that it's not impossible to change the tool table mid-program, but the gui might not allow it
11:53 AM rs[m]: unterhaus_: you can change nearly everything on the fly if you get a gui or something else to do it
11:54 AM rs[m]: unterhaus_: the thing with manual tool change is you can't jog around wile the program is paused
11:55 AM rs[m]: it should be possible to cobble something together like move to some tool change position and use some other form if input to control Z axis and confirm 0 with a button if you absolutely need to do it
11:55 AM gregcnc: you would write a tool change program
11:56 AM rs[m]: as part of the manual tool change routine
11:58 AM mrec: I guess vers.by banned my IP/our IP range for some reason the nearby servers are ok
11:59 AM mrec: and I'm able to access them via proxy though I think I'll stick with the cheaper chinese ones for now (for learning)
11:59 AM mrec: I'd like to replace everything once I'm firm with it
12:03 PM rs[m]: mrec: you could try detecting contact with a PCB, but that depends on the specifics of your hardware
12:04 PM rs[m]: mrec: e.g. connect the top copper layer of a PCB board with pull up resistor to probe input, and connect your tool to ground
12:06 PM rs[m]: such a contraption can also be used to probe top height of work piece if it is flat enough
12:07 PM mrec: rs[m]: I'm fine with getting the tool
12:07 PM mrec: I used a piece of paper before and got an overcut of 0.25mm
12:08 PM mrec: there is a play in the Z axis I did not convert it to ballscrews yet either.
12:15 PM unterhaus_: how would an intel 2500k work for lcnc?
12:22 PM veegee_: Rab it's not under power but the guy claimed spindle was working before being unplugged. He said only thing not working is X axis power feed, but that's dead simple to fix
12:22 PM veegee_: I'm going to take a look at it now
12:32 PM unterhaus_: I think I used to buy ever cable that looked like it was for a servomotor that came up on ebay
12:33 PM unterhaus_: people wised up to me though, they aren't cheap any more
01:17 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i'll have a look in a bit
01:26 PM Connor1 is now known as Connor
01:39 PM Tom_L: still no __init__.py file
01:39 PM Tom_L: dunno if that's necessary or not
01:40 PM Tom_L: and no condem-0.1 directory created
01:58 PM Tom_L: aparently __init__.py isn't necessary with newer python versions
03:51 PM veegee_: Rab I went and checked it out. Surprisingly in decent condition. Lots of grime and grease, but once you wipe it off, the metal underneath is surprisingly shiny
03:51 PM veegee_: Power feeds on all 3 axis
03:52 PM veegee_: Turns out the owner of the machine is one of the owners of Darbert machinery, a manufacturer in Canada
03:52 PM veegee_: The gibs need adjustment and needs some love and care but for $900 CAD, can't really go wrong with a universal mill with 40 taper spindles
03:52 PM JT-Cave: the __init__.py is an empty file and IIRC setuptools uses it
03:53 PM veegee_: Tom_L __init__.py indicates that the directory is a module
03:53 PM veegee_: You need it it if you want to import that directory as a module
04:03 PM Tom_L: yeah avr c had some where you needed an empty .h file
04:07 PM Tom_L: ok i got a .deb file now
04:07 PM JT-Shop: nice, did it install?
04:08 PM Tom_L: didn't install it yet
04:08 PM Tom_L: yes
04:08 PM Tom_L: hammer says bang :)
04:09 PM JT-Shop: LOL
04:09 PM Tom_L: thumb says ouch!
04:10 PM Tom_L: cool
04:10 PM JT-Shop: I should speil it out that the __init__.py is an empty file
04:10 PM Tom_L: i've never programmed python...
04:10 PM JT-Shop: I have one for a PyQt5 gui that makes a deb
04:10 PM Tom_L: i saw your menu for it
04:11 PM JT-Shop: still working out the details
04:11 PM Tom_L: not your mill gui is it?
04:11 PM Tom_L: i don't have a touch screen anyway
04:12 PM JT-Shop: no it's just a hello redneck
04:12 PM JT-Shop: as basic as possible
04:12 PM JT-Shop: finally got that damn pool fence done today...
04:12 PM Tom_L: i thought that was ancient history by now
04:14 PM JT-Shop: all I had left was 2 gates to install but holidays, other work, weather kept me from finishing
04:15 PM JT-Shop: I made all the gates last and had them powder coated
04:15 PM JT-Shop: got the gates back about 4 weeks ago
04:16 PM Tom_L: heh
04:23 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:44 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest904
05:52 PM CaptHindsight: IT'S a GooDa Mill! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfA7DjgMB2Y
06:01 PM XXCoder: fancy probing lol
06:01 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN6c6lc3-9Y
06:01 PM XXCoder: reprap has em too
06:04 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIOa72HIKCc
06:04 PM Tom_L: enough pron for one evening...
06:05 PM XXCoder: spindle dance
06:06 PM XXCoder: its annoying when person dont seem to let video play out more than a second or 2 but keep cutting to different shot
06:06 PM XXCoder: cool though. its like weird spot between mill and router lol
06:28 PM CaptHindsight: the director probably thinks more about an average person watching it vs a machine builder or user
06:40 PM andypugh: I like how that is the “Compact” model.
06:41 PM Tom_L: zimmerman are typically largeish
06:48 PM andypugh: Admittedly it’s smaller than some I have seen.
06:49 PM _unreal_: HATE cutting acrylic
06:49 PM _unreal_: OH SHIT just realized I fucked up my cad drawing
07:20 PM _unreal_: GOD i HATE ACRYLIC
07:24 PM _unreal_: wish I had cooling
07:24 PM _unreal_: :(
07:24 PM _unreal_: would be nice to be able to NOT have molten acrylic
07:55 PM jdh]: single flute, high feed
07:59 PM _unreal_: single flute up cut keeps gumming on me, I'm using two flute
07:59 PM _unreal_: something strange with this acrylic, some ares it makes chips other areas it makes melt
07:59 PM _unreal_: same feeds
07:59 PM _unreal_: just odd
09:27 PM unterhaus: would you move your electronics cabinet because one of your encoder cables is 2" too short?
09:43 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, get a longer cable
09:43 PM Tom_L: however i faced that with my spindle motor and moved it's vfd closer than i originally had mounted it
09:45 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Spindle/Drag_Chain1.jpg
09:45 PM Tom_L: why i cut a slot in the drag chain too
09:45 PM Tom_L: but that was prior to moving the vfd
09:45 PM unterhaus: easy to say get another cable when it's not your $200 :)
09:45 PM Tom_L: well then move the cabinet!
09:46 PM unterhaus: this cable is not common and not sold in stores
09:46 PM Tom_L: mine is fairly easy to move if i had to
09:46 PM unterhaus: it's nice to have the right cable for testing, I'll probably figure out a different cable
09:49 PM beachbumpete1: Hey guys
09:49 PM Tom_L: hi pete
09:49 PM beachbumpete1: I've got a problem I hope you can help me with
09:49 PM beachbumpete1: I bought my daughter a nice gaming PC
09:49 PM beachbumpete1: for Christmas
09:50 PM beachbumpete1: Hey Tom_L
09:50 PM beachbumpete1: anyways it was working great
09:50 PM beachbumpete1: and for some reason she decided that she should update the GPU firmware
09:50 PM beachbumpete1: why I have NO IDEA
09:50 PM beachbumpete1: but whatever she did it now does not work at all
09:51 PM beachbumpete1: I tried to remove the video card
09:51 PM beachbumpete1: and run it with onboard HDMI output
09:51 PM beachbumpete1: I get nothing from either onboard or video card outputs
09:51 PM XXCoder: have you re-enabled onboard video in bios?
09:51 PM unterhaus: maybe she torched the mobo bios?
09:52 PM beachbumpete1: I was watching some youtube videos trying to figure out how to fix it
09:52 PM beachbumpete1: I get nothing from the PC so I cannot even GET to the bios
09:52 PM unterhaus: at that point I always remove everything and see if I get beep codes
09:52 PM beachbumpete1: is there a way to get to the bios without video output?
09:52 PM unterhaus: see if there is a backup bios
09:53 PM beachbumpete1: I tried removing the CMOS battery and resetting everythign
09:53 PM unterhaus: I remove the memory
09:53 PM unterhaus: it should beep
09:53 PM beachbumpete1: will it run without memory?
09:53 PM unterhaus: it beeps :)
09:54 PM beachbumpete1: I did just install brand new 32 gigs of ram earlier today for her
09:54 PM beachbumpete1: and it was running great after that
09:54 PM XXCoder: one way is to buy really cheap used video card
09:54 PM beachbumpete1: showed the 32 gigs in the software
09:54 PM unterhaus: I was never that nice to my kids
09:54 PM beachbumpete1: I know right
09:54 PM beachbumpete1: this was an unusual Christmas gift
09:54 PM XXCoder: as long as connectors and slot is same it should work
09:54 PM unterhaus: do you have a spare video card?
09:55 PM XXCoder: or a spare yeah
09:55 PM beachbumpete1: I only have the nice one in my desktop
09:55 PM beachbumpete1: I will try to disconnect everything and remove ram and see what happens
09:55 PM beachbumpete1: the machine boots up it seems
09:55 PM beachbumpete1: all the fans come on
09:55 PM unterhaus: yeah, if that doesn't result in beeps you got a problem
09:55 PM Tom_L: is there a bios reset jumper on the MB?
09:55 PM beachbumpete1: all the pretty LED lights inside the case all work
09:55 PM unterhaus: fans don't mean anything much
09:56 PM beachbumpete1: the keyboard and mouse lights all light up etc
09:56 PM beachbumpete1: I just cant tell if anything is on the screen because there is no output just black screen
09:56 PM beachbumpete1: after a bit the display says no HDMI signal
09:56 PM beachbumpete1: Tom_L: I do not know I will check in the manual
09:57 PM beachbumpete1: I can't believe she did this I am so pissed
09:57 PM beachbumpete1: it was working beautiful
09:57 PM beachbumpete1: brand new PC
09:57 PM beachbumpete1: I hate to get mad at her she was just trying to learn
09:58 PM beachbumpete1: but man if it smoked this pC I am gonna be so pissed
09:58 PM unterhaus: you should be proud of her, like I was when my daughter broke my only center drill
09:58 PM beachbumpete1: It has an ASrock main board
09:58 PM beachbumpete1: and AMD Reyzen 5 chipset
09:58 PM unterhaus: I'm sure it's recoverable
09:59 PM beachbumpete1: I damn sure hope so
09:59 PM beachbumpete1: its freaking brand new
10:00 PM Tom_L: try the beep test
10:00 PM Tom_L: start with no ram, it should beep
10:00 PM Tom_L: that tells you it's alive
10:00 PM buzzmarshall: id start by getting into the bios and restore the bios to factory defaults
10:01 PM Tom_L: does the kbd respond?
10:01 PM Tom_L: ie caps lock etc
10:01 PM Tom_L: that will tell you too
10:02 PM buzzmarshall: if its a dead video card and the rest of the puter is fine it will beep 7 x
10:02 PM buzzmarshall: thats the usual video post code
10:03 PM buzzmarshall: reyzen can be touchy with vcc levels and clock settings and it wouldn't suprise me to see a firmware update step on something in the bios
10:03 PM Tom_L: once i lost video on mine but it had redirected it to the 2nd port
10:03 PM beachbumpete1: I just tried that... removed the ram
10:04 PM beachbumpete1: plugged it back in
10:04 PM beachbumpete1: and something actually fried on the main board
10:04 PM Tom_L: did you try a beep test with no ram?
10:04 PM beachbumpete1: its screwed
10:04 PM Tom_L: damn...
10:04 PM beachbumpete1: I gotta order a new main board I think
10:06 PM beachbumpete1: fortunately they are only like $75
10:07 PM beachbumpete1: I can't believe this
10:07 PM beachbumpete1: never seen anything like it
10:07 PM beachbumpete1: brand new PC
10:09 PM buzzmarshall: lol... new ones can be the worse depending on who makes them
10:10 PM buzzmarshall: sorry shouldnt laugh
10:10 PM buzzmarshall: i see intermittent startup issues with new computers all the time unless their macs
10:11 PM beachbumpete1: It was working great until she decided she is a PC expert and updated the firmware in the video card...
10:11 PM beachbumpete1: then nothing worked
10:11 PM beachbumpete1: not its smoked
10:11 PM buzzmarshall: if it works and then don't work but after sitting for a day starts back up its usually bad mounting of the mb as the grounds are right
10:11 PM beachbumpete1: now
10:11 PM Tom_L: better fix the video card before plugging it back in the new mb too
10:12 PM buzzmarshall: if the boards not grounded properly the caps on the board don't bleed their charges off the mb won't start...
10:12 PM buzzmarshall: as a last resort i'd pull the external vid card and reduce the memory down to the bare min and reset the bio to factory
10:13 PM buzzmarshall: if you can get it go that way let it boot the os back up and then quit and start putting the stuff back in
10:13 PM buzzmarshall: it just seems weird that a firmware update would kill the board
10:14 PM buzzmarshall: i could see it stepping on something in the bios settings caushing the mb to not properly post
10:14 PM buzzmarshall: but to physically kill a board seems wierd tho it is posible
10:14 PM buzzmarshall: just to coincidental to my thinking
10:15 PM buzzmarshall: with the bios's now adays and all the vcc and clock settings sometimes just pulling the battery and jumpering the bios out doesnt do enough
10:16 PM buzzmarshall: as that just resets some of the bios and if the corrupted part is outside that normal area it wont get overwrote and fixed
10:16 PM buzzmarshall: thats why the factory restore is their
10:16 PM buzzmarshall: it does a full sector to sector overwrite of everything
10:16 PM beachbumpete1: yeah man its done
10:16 PM beachbumpete1: I need to find a replacement mother board
10:17 PM beachbumpete1: unfortunately not seeing any online
10:17 PM beachbumpete1: its an ASRock A320M/AC
10:17 PM buzzmarshall: Asrock should be easy to find as their a dime a dozen around here
10:17 PM beachbumpete1: yeah they are just not THAT one
10:18 PM CaptHindsight: how do you really know what she did?
10:18 PM beachbumpete1: Just what she told me she did
10:18 PM beachbumpete1: it does not matter now
10:19 PM buzzmarshall: personally i gave up on the reyzen's as unless your sticking it into a known good board it can be hit and miss as alot of mb's can be not very tight timing and vcc wise
10:19 PM beachbumpete1: it was working great now its literally smoked
10:19 PM beachbumpete1: new board is needed
10:19 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, download this GPU firmware upgrade that hoses your machine, RuSSianHaCkers tm
10:19 PM beachbumpete1: hoping the chip is not damaged too
10:19 PM buzzmarshall: well a video firmware update really shouldn't do much that can touch the hardware outside altering the bio hooks and the firmware on the vc
10:20 PM CaptHindsight: IF that is she actually did
10:20 PM beachbumpete1: I think removing the ram and starting it up fried it actually
10:20 PM buzzmarshall: ya thats a posibility
10:20 PM CaptHindsight: no ram should not be an issue
10:20 PM beachbumpete1: before it just would not output video
10:20 PM CaptHindsight: what MB model by Asrock?
10:20 PM beachbumpete1: that is what I thought
10:20 PM buzzmarshall: if someones specifically wrote firmware to kill something that definately could be
10:20 PM beachbumpete1: A320M/AC
10:21 PM CaptHindsight: beachbumpete1: do you have other PC's to test the GPU card?
10:22 PM buzzmarshall: my comments were just based on thinking she took a legit firmware update from the vendor but Capt could be right
10:22 PM beachbumpete1: I do but I honestly do not want to try it in my GOOD pc
10:22 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, we just don't really know
10:22 PM CaptHindsight: i see
10:22 PM CaptHindsight: when you pull the GPU card do you get onboard graphics?
10:22 PM beachbumpete1: I do not see the A320M/AC for sale new anywhere
10:22 PM buzzmarshall: well if the boards got a internal video i'd start by removing the external
10:23 PM CaptHindsight: BUT does the Ryzen5 have integrated graphics? some models do not
10:24 PM beachbumpete1: the main board had an HDMI output
10:24 PM buzzmarshall: ya im not sure on his board
10:24 PM beachbumpete1: that was the first thing I tried
10:24 PM CaptHindsight: do you have an alternate GPU card to put into the AsRock MB?
10:24 PM beachbumpete1: there are several A320M/HDV boards available
10:24 PM beachbumpete1: the board is FRIED
10:24 PM beachbumpete1: I mean LITERALLY FRIED
10:24 PM beachbumpete1: like smoke came out
10:25 PM beachbumpete1: never seen anything like it
10:25 PM beachbumpete1: removed the ram, plugged it back in and tried the beep test
10:25 PM Tom_L: what's the difference between HDV and AC?
10:25 PM beachbumpete1: smoked as soon as it turned on
10:25 PM beachbumpete1: Tom_L: I do not know
10:25 PM CaptHindsight: ah ok I missed the smoke part
10:26 PM beachbumpete1: Just need to get a new motherboard and start over.
10:27 PM beachbumpete1: hoping the chipset was not damaged
10:27 PM CaptHindsight: well she shot for a 4 banana firmware upgrade that I'd be nervous about performing and I used to design motherboards :)
10:27 PM beachbumpete1: I know I cannot believe of all things to try she decided to update the video cards firmware
10:28 PM beachbumpete1: I don't do that shit unless I absolutely have to
10:28 PM beachbumpete1: I think Im gonna be sick now hehehe
10:28 PM beachbumpete1: she JUST got the damn thing this morning
10:28 PM beachbumpete1: it was working PERFECT
10:28 PM beachbumpete1: now its smoked and Im out money to fix it
10:29 PM Tom_L: well, if it ain't broke don't fix it...
10:30 PM CaptHindsight: which model Ryzen5?
10:32 PM CaptHindsight: some have integrated graphics and some don't, we can see about getting the MB up again if it has integrated graphics...
10:32 PM CaptHindsight: otherwise you'll need another GPU card to plug in and test
10:34 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/A320Mac/index.asp
10:35 PM CaptHindsight: i checked with the AMD gpu guy down the hall from me, he said that genuine gpu firmware upgrades do a pretty good job of checking before flashing
10:35 PM CaptHindsight: he has even tried to unlock cores and extra features
10:36 PM CaptHindsight: and was able to recover cards that would no longer boot with windows using the AMD utils
10:36 PM CaptHindsight: but smoke is a bad sign from the GPU card
10:36 PM beachbumpete1: the smoke came from the motherboard not the card
10:36 PM beachbumpete1: I just removed the chip
10:37 PM mrec: did I get that right, on a parallel port 8 pins can be used as output and a few pins as input?
10:37 PM beachbumpete1: there does not appear to be any burnt anuthing
10:37 PM mrec: (I'm currently only using the output of it)
10:37 PM beachbumpete1: hopefully I can order a new mother board and get it back working
10:37 PM CaptHindsight: ah ok , thanks for clarifying the source of smoke
10:38 PM Tom_L: mrec, http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/hal/parallel-port.html
10:38 PM beachbumpete1: it seemed to come from the bottom of the board farthest from the chipset
10:38 PM Tom_L: table gives you the options
10:39 PM beachbumpete1: Its not like I have not blown things up in my life but a brand new PC is a first
10:39 PM mrec: I think I should get a second parport pcie card
10:39 PM beachbumpete1: the A320M/HDV sure LOOKS similar
10:40 PM beachbumpete1: on a positive note
10:40 PM beachbumpete1: my 3D printer is running again
10:40 PM beachbumpete1: I had upgraded the entire electronics on it recently
10:40 PM CaptHindsight: without pulling it all apart.... it might be coincidence on the smoke, something could haver fallen under the MB or was loose under it
10:41 PM beachbumpete1: with brand new BTT SKR1.4 turbo board and TMC2209 stepper driver
10:41 PM beachbumpete1: also installed the new TFT35 touch screen display
10:42 PM beachbumpete1: I also installed a seperate 24v power supply to only power the large build table
10:42 PM beachbumpete1: I bought a cheapo china one on amazon
10:42 PM beachbumpete1: it worked for about six hours then dropped a capacitor
10:42 PM beachbumpete1: I ordered a nice meanwell 24v 25 amp 600 watt unit
10:43 PM beachbumpete1: it just got here today
10:43 PM beachbumpete1: and I installed it earlier
10:43 PM JavaBean: i have a new a320-hdv board coming for me, bought because i have built a few systems with it. been pretty nice
10:43 PM beachbumpete1: its been printing ever since
10:43 PM beachbumpete1: so far so good
10:43 PM CaptHindsight: I crashed a 6" dia face mill once and tripped the 60A 3p breakers to the machine
10:43 PM beachbumpete1: JavaBean: good to hear
10:43 PM beachbumpete1: honestly this board and chipset comes highly recommended
10:44 PM beachbumpete1: it sucks it is smoked now
10:44 PM JavaBean: toss mine "recommendation" in on top
10:45 PM beachbumpete1: Im printing the mandalorian Mythosaur skull scaled up to fit my machines table
10:45 PM JavaBean: accidentally left one running the "start screen" of a bluray for almost 3 weeks
10:47 PM XXCoder: talking about GPUs, whats good one for linux thats well supported for many games?
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: been using AMD for the past 20+ years
10:48 PM XXCoder: for linux systems?
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: yes
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: I have only purchased 2 Intel systems in the past 20+ years
10:49 PM XXCoder: cool though im not sure what model is good. i might want to wait till i build new system
10:49 PM beachbumpete1: AMD is pretty damn good
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: and they were on special for <$100 for a LCNC project
10:50 PM beachbumpete1: Can't wait to see this skull finished printing
10:50 PM XXCoder: amdgpu supported cards
10:51 PM JavaBean: i highly recommend getting an AMD gpu for linux systems. also, if you have an NVIDIA gpu and something goes left... don't ask for help, you will be told the problem is the gpu/drivers
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: we even have Steam on Linux with AMD graphics
10:51 PM XXCoder: i think i might wait bit more, because i want to switch to HDMI at same time too, and get much better montiors.
10:51 PM JavaBean: full stroke NVIDIA with a Saturn5 rocket
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: takes a bit of finesse at times but runs solid
10:52 PM XXCoder: my vision contrast is bit weaker than average, and the current montiors suck on contrast
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: do you need one of the 5,000 nit monitors? :)
10:52 PM XXCoder: its opne of those "millions dynimatic range" montiors
10:52 PM XXCoder: but actual range is around 1000 if I remember right
10:53 PM XXCoder: 5000 nit?
10:53 PM JavaBean: nit is a measurement for the screen brightness
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: they use them outdoors as signs :)
10:53 PM XXCoder: og brightness matters less than range of bright to dark
10:55 PM XXCoder: theres newer oled montiors dunno which is good tho
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: QLED vs OLED
10:56 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tests/picture-quality/contrast-ratio
10:57 PM CaptHindsight: compares qled to oled TV's https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-type/qled-vs-oled-vs-led
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: OLED has better contrast
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: QLED better color range
10:58 PM XXCoder: nice
10:59 PM XXCoder: Contrast: Inf:1
10:59 PM XXCoder: even led on right is better than my current ones
11:01 PM XXCoder: oled is very fast on update, at 1 ms
11:06 PM XXCoder: capt hmm one risk on oled
11:06 PM XXCoder: burn in
11:09 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, do you expect it to be a problem for you? lots of static windows?
11:09 PM XXCoder: basically yeah lol
11:09 PM XXCoder: hexchat is always on right window
11:10 PM CaptHindsight: well then you won't notice :)
11:10 PM XXCoder: lol
11:10 PM CaptHindsight: don't move hexchat
11:11 PM CaptHindsight: i have had only one LCD monitor die on me in the past 15 years and that was because I knocked it over on its face onto concrete
11:11 PM CaptHindsight: but it still runs, with a crazy pattern over the top middle
11:12 PM CaptHindsight: had to swap caps in another one
11:13 PM CaptHindsight: most common problem is just bad electrolytic capacitors
11:13 PM CaptHindsight: replace and it's good for several more years
11:14 PM XXCoder: led ones is what I have now yeah
11:15 PM XXCoder: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008ABO0P2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 in 2013
11:17 PM XXCoder: yep 1000:1 contrast. wow that sucks lol
11:18 PM CaptHindsight: I'm sitting in front of this one right now https://www.cnet.com/reviews/lg-42lb1dra-review/
11:19 PM CaptHindsight: still kicking
11:19 PM CaptHindsight: almost old enough to drive
11:19 PM XXCoder: lol ok
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: I would have loved dual 4K monitors years ago in portrait mode
