12:24 AM mrec: did anyone try to add a automatic tool changer to one of those chinese milling machines?
12:31 AM mrec: I think I'll dig into the locking/unlocking mechanism within the next weeks.
12:31 AM mrec: I have removed the leadscrews from my WBM18 mill and successfully added ballscrews to it recently..
12:31 AM XXCoder: adding holders would take workspace in most cases
12:31 AM mrec: the tool holder is not a problem for me, but the unlocking part for MT2
12:31 AM mrec: when releasing the tools it always needs 2 pressure clicks.. I wasn't even able to remove the entire spindle from the machine no idea how they have fixed everything (yet)
12:52 AM mrec: ok next question, is there a way to just drive the contours without lowering the Z axis? just to check if the workpiece fits?
12:52 AM mrec: the lasercutter which I used to use had such a feature, I just want to cut some acrylic parts
02:49 AM Deejay: moin
02:49 AM Deejay: merry xmas
02:49 AM XXCoder: merry xmas
03:07 AM CaptHindsight: HO HO HO
03:08 AM XXCoder: no! i wont pay for 3 hos
03:08 AM XXCoder: ;)
03:11 AM CaptHindsight: and a festivus for the rest of us
03:15 AM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/HxfZSEboVM4 :(
03:16 AM XXCoder: abestos. so many workers with no masks to protect lungs
03:25 AM alex_joni: Happy Christmas
05:35 AM JT-Cave: Merry Christmas
05:35 AM XXCoder: merry xmas
05:38 AM JT-Cave: 16°F looks like it will get a bit lower before sunrise
05:39 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/
05:39 AM JT-Cave: got the chip chute almost done
05:40 AM XXCoder: your own or contract?
05:40 AM JT-Cave: for my planer
05:40 AM XXCoder: nice
05:41 AM JT-Cave: old one came out the back and was broken on top so a PIA
05:42 AM XXCoder: that looks like it should be extremely effective vacuum
05:43 AM JT-Cave: I hope so, it was interesting to fabricate it on the planter so it fit well
05:44 AM JT-Cave: the side discharge will keep the hose out of the way
06:20 AM Tom_L: morning and Merry Christmas
06:20 AM XXCoder: merry xmas
06:21 AM Tom_L: 19F hi 52
06:27 AM andypugh: Is it christmas? I have just been out in the garage welding…
06:28 AM JT-Cave: 16°F high 31°F
06:29 AM JT-Cave: I've not found any presents yet... must have been too cold
06:29 AM andypugh: Were you naughty or nice?
06:29 AM JT-Cave: well I didn't find a lump of coal either so dunno
07:08 AM JT-Cave: Christmas or not it's time to pick up poop and be a chicken tender
07:09 AM XXCoder: merry xmas
08:22 AM JavaBean: https://images-ext-2.discordapp.net/external/nU3nCJe94na4YKQMNiZyfSjqgpQsbxvInIlMBxWAP9g/http/freefall.purrsia.com/ff3600/santa2020.png
09:01 AM Loetmichel: MAN am i pissed. Just drove wifes merc to the Rehab clinic for her hip surgery, to pic her up for a bit of a joyride around and maybe a christmas coffee at McD or something. She awaited me with the words "Nope, just take that luggage back, i am not allowed even into my own car, Covid. So i drove back home without even touching her. Interesting though how the car can see my mood. On the way
09:01 AM Loetmichel: to my wife the "distance to car in front to low" indicator lit up once. Briefly. On the way back it was nearly constant on. :(
09:03 AM andypugh: Shorter, cleaner link. It’s quite funny: http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff3600/santa2020.png
09:03 AM JT-Cave: lol
09:05 AM andypugh: I read the main Freefall comic every day it comes out.
09:05 AM andypugh: (so I knew that the link was probably safe)
09:06 AM Tom_L: andy thanks for the help on 2.8 upgrade, buildbot link was good it was just my ignorance getting in the way
09:29 AM _unreal_: hum... hashville blew up
09:29 AM _unreal_: nash
09:29 AM _unreal_: car bomb
09:36 AM andypugh: Womders what Mud20 is doing
09:41 AM _unreal_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDnavOlGcdc
09:43 AM _unreal_: the free software https://smicut.com/en/software/
09:43 AM _unreal_: just interesting
09:45 AM andypugh: Did you see my silly threading video? Thread milling would have been a good chouce there, if I had had a thread mill.
10:36 AM JT-Shop: missed that
10:59 AM andypugh: https://youtu.be/PvBrDdwYTfw
11:02 AM Tom_L: i think i did see that one
11:03 AM Tom_L: if i had the right equipment i'd roll form again
11:04 AM Tom_L: _unreal_, the reason i didn't go with those threadmills is the single point are more versatile
11:08 AM Tom_L: andypugh, what rpm did you cut that?
11:08 AM Tom_L: like 50 or so?
11:09 AM andypugh: Probbaly 80.
11:09 AM andypugh: Lowest gear on that mill _tops_out_ at 45. It can actually do 1 rpm at huge torque.
11:10 AM Tom_L: that'd be an arm breaker for sure
11:10 AM andypugh: Here is an example of what it can do: https://youtu.be/thtDRjgbxRE
11:11 AM Tom_L: i remember that one
11:11 AM Tom_L: what was the spring for?
11:12 AM andypugh: Saddle suspension for the Ner-a-Car
11:26 AM _unreal_: andypugh, I added an LED to my new mill I'm building that is very much like your goose neck
11:27 AM andypugh: From Ikea?
11:29 AM andypugh: I put one of these on the grinder, it’s got a siffer gooseneck and runs from mains (so does not need a 4V PSU):
11:29 AM andypugh: I put one of these on the grinder, it’s got a siffer gooseneck and runs from mains (so does not need a 4V PSU): https://www.banggood.com/6W-110-220V-LED-Machine-Working-Light-Gooseneck-Magnetic-Base-Switch-Lamp-CNC-Machine-Tool-Lamp-p-1228990.html
11:29 AM _unreal_: just same design
11:29 AM _unreal_: some cheap DESK lamp
11:30 AM _unreal_: but LED based and long gooseneck and the lamp end has the same shape/design
11:31 AM _unreal_: the one I have I had to "cut" away from the base oddly enough. but ya 4v supply
11:31 AM _unreal_: just drilled a hole in the 1.5kw spindle mount and put a set screw and a wire chaise hole
11:33 AM _unreal_: killing me, I got fucked over at work the 23, I was given a job that was someone else's project. I'll spare the details. but the other higher level manager got screwed into the project as well. I had PLANNED on bringing some of the cnc parts home to work on over the break. didnt get to do a damn thing
11:33 AM _unreal_: sigh
11:39 AM mrec: does anyone have experience with cutting acrylic? currently I'm doing 10mm/sec, 0.5mm depth (2 flute, I don't have a single flute available at the moment)
11:40 AM mrec: the question would be should I increase the layer steps and lower the cutting speed?
11:41 AM mrec: 0.5 -> 1mm and go 5mm/sec
11:41 AM mrec: RPM = 2000 with a 3mm 2 flute tool
11:42 AM mrec: 6mm is much better and requires much less RPM to get the same result (the results are good though)
11:45 AM _unreal_: it depends
11:45 AM _unreal_: the main issue is heat
11:45 AM _unreal_: also are you using an UP cut or straight flutes?
11:46 AM _unreal_: you really want to use up cut single flute
11:46 AM _unreal_: feed and depth depends
11:47 AM mrec: I'm using up cut yes
11:47 AM mrec: I'll try to get some single flutes within the next week
11:47 AM _unreal_: I cut acrylic now and then and I have never been able to cut it well unless I was using an up cut. and I typically have a feed around 100mm/min 1/8th-2mm per pass
11:48 AM _unreal_: what kind of mill?
11:48 AM mrec: 2 flute/3mm (10 EUR in Taiwan)
11:48 AM _unreal_: NO mill WHAT KIND of milling machine
11:49 AM _unreal_: do you have a dust shoe, + air, misting, water cooling?
11:49 AM mrec: http://de.weissmachinery.com/productimage/57296077.html
11:49 AM mrec: converted to linuxcnc
11:49 AM mrec: no I have nothing of all that yet
11:50 AM _unreal_: RIGHT off the bad you want a dust shoe. That will make a HUGE difference, using a vacuum will help clear AND cool
11:50 AM mrec: I'm still working on it and trying to get something useful out of it (X/Y is okay, Z should be ok, I'm still using the leadscrew on Z, XY is converted to more accurate ballscrews)
11:51 AM mrec: _unreal_: so for sucking the chips off straight away?
11:51 AM _unreal_: as long as your not loading z I can see it not having backlash
11:51 AM _unreal_: yes
11:51 AM _unreal_: and making it so you dont have shit flying
11:51 AM mrec: Z is a bit inaccurate (I think I mentioned that last time)
11:51 AM _unreal_: but they dont help when it comes to deep cuts because chips build up in deep pockets. deep pocket is 1/4" +
11:52 AM _unreal_: inaccurate in step rate or backlash?
11:52 AM mrec: the taiwanese cutter is quite well (not compareable with chinese ones), that still doesn't mean that it's suitable for acrylic since I don't have experience with a good single flute endmill
11:53 AM _unreal_: what rpm are you using?
11:53 AM _unreal_: I'm assuming your getting melting adn build up on the bit
11:53 AM mrec: I think there's some backlash caused by my crappy installation and I don't trust the 4mm pitch.. I'm off 0.4mm on 200mm I think
11:53 AM mrec: 2000 for 3mm endmill, 700 for a 6mm endmill
11:53 AM _unreal_: ?
11:53 AM _unreal_: $?
11:54 AM mrec: rPM
11:54 AM _unreal_: OH
11:54 AM mrec: RPM
11:55 AM _unreal_: I believe I typically run my cnc at 10k rpm
11:55 AM mrec: the machine can't go higher than around 2000-2200 rpm
11:55 AM _unreal_: but then again my spindle is BLDC 15k rpm
11:56 AM mrec: I will only cut acrylic for prototyping, it's quicker to do it with a lasercutter
11:56 AM mrec: it's interesting the finish has a similar pattern than the lasercutter which we have access to
11:56 AM mrec: as th*
11:57 AM _unreal_: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QiVG-3oYM0k8G7jLCvv1eaoqVGQh-K_d/view?usp=sharing
11:58 AM _unreal_: that spindle is very small but very powerful
11:58 AM _unreal_: 300watt bldc
11:59 AM _unreal_: solid 5/8th shaft, milled collet reciver
11:59 AM _unreal_: it can take abuse
12:00 PM mrec: I see almost nothing it's covered?
12:00 PM _unreal_: :)
12:00 PM mrec: the spindle in my machine has 750w actually I want to do small aluminium parts.. acrylic is just some other thing
12:01 PM _unreal_: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000801582283.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.7e464c4dOxJHGO
12:01 PM _unreal_: your going to want RPM for aluminum
12:02 PM _unreal_: its a small package but its a power house
12:02 PM _unreal_: and best of all I got the most stroke out of my Z
12:02 PM mrec: didn't you have any issue with the dust shoe winding up on the endmill?
12:02 PM _unreal_: ?
12:03 PM _unreal_: I'm not sure I under stand what your asking/saying?
12:03 PM mrec: if the "hair" of the dust shoe touches the endmill it will just wind up no?
12:03 PM _unreal_: nope
12:03 PM _unreal_: and does not
12:04 PM mrec: does it touch it occasionally?
12:04 PM _unreal_: the ends can touch a little
12:04 PM _unreal_: in the back
12:04 PM _unreal_: but the sides can not
12:04 PM mrec: ok... I need to get one of those
12:04 PM _unreal_: and even so no I have never had a wind up. and if it has chances are it just cut them
12:04 PM _unreal_: build it
12:05 PM mrec: I'm still in progress :-)
12:05 PM _unreal_: my is a 2 part
12:05 PM _unreal_: bottom is magnetic, and the two metal things with springs have pins at the bottom. I push down and rotate to LOCK the base on
12:06 PM _unreal_: I almost never lock the base on. only if I'm going to be driving the brush head down hard on the work piece. but the magnets hold it very tight
12:06 PM _unreal_: figures I was going to run lcnc but
12:06 PM mrec: it should be easier for mine because the head only goes up and down and doesn't move (attaching the vacuum cleaner shouldn't be a big issue there)
12:06 PM _unreal_: after a lot of testing and fighting etc....
12:06 PM _unreal_: I'm going back to planetcnc
12:06 PM _unreal_: way WAY WAY more options features, control. and maturity of the software
12:06 PM mrec: I'm using the parallel port
12:07 PM _unreal_: I would suggest building a brush head setup that is not attached to the
12:07 PM _unreal_: Z directly
12:07 PM _unreal_: that way you can set the height
12:08 PM _unreal_: height of the dust shoe, mine is attached to it. which is good and bad
12:08 PM _unreal_: down fall is that it can grind the shoe depending on my work piece
12:08 PM _unreal_: if for example is has areas that stock way up
12:08 PM _unreal_: sure the z will go OVER it but the rest of the show is just following z
12:08 PM _unreal_: show=shoe
12:09 PM _unreal_: par-port is two slow for me, 16x micro step the step rate is to high for jogging
12:10 PM mrec: I have set it up a month ago on my side but then changed leadscrews to ballscrews (2mm ls to 4mm bs)
12:10 PM mrec: it's really smooth now
12:10 PM mrec: before the motors even overloaded at some point that doesn't happen anymore
12:10 PM _unreal_: nice
12:10 PM mrec: but I also cleaned the entire machine and added grease again
12:11 PM _unreal_: thats where the shoe comes in handy
12:11 PM enleth: _unreal_: the difference is not in options, features and maturity, but in accessibility of the options and features that are there, FYI
12:11 PM _unreal_: I would suggest building a universal shoe reciver
12:11 PM mrec: that's still an issue yes the acrylic chips are sticking to the grease now (next I need to add a cover to that)
12:11 PM _unreal_: meaning one for brush and one for flat etc...
12:11 PM _unreal_: depending on what your working on
12:12 PM enleth: _unreal_: linuxcnc *can* be extremely powerful and flexible, but it's also painfully and horribly hard to get to that point if you're not already an expert, hence your nasty experience
12:12 PM _unreal_: I wouldnt call it nasty
12:13 PM _unreal_: I've by no means given up on lcnc just. for the business envronment in DIY
12:13 PM enleth: I'd call mine nasty, and I'm a fan of it
12:13 PM _unreal_: had I not gotten totally fucked over this $$$ year. I likely would have just purchased a 6040 or greater
12:13 PM _unreal_: rather then build
12:14 PM enleth: the UIs are mostly crap, too - I truly wish I had the time to contribute to fixing that
12:14 PM _unreal_: enleth, if you do try to fix... I would suggest looking at planetcnc's GUI
12:15 PM _unreal_: and how it works. if lcnc by default worked like planetcnc's setup. it would be a DREAM
12:15 PM _unreal_: enleth, thats the thing I've noticed is like the most basic UI, is the most stable but its uselessly simple
12:16 PM _unreal_: even a very seasoned user of GCODE would find it annoying to MDI control the machine when you can just click a button for the same feature
12:17 PM _unreal_: and that very nice GUI that took for ever to get working. was driving me nutty because the on screen controls kept failing.
12:18 PM _unreal_: hit x/y/z +/- works. do some other stuff. suddenly + or - button no longer works but I can type the gcode to go in the direction I want....
12:18 PM enleth: most lcnc UIs suffer from typical problems of UIs made by software developers while developing the underlying software, which is a well known and well researched issue in the open source community, but one that's hard to fix for several different reasons
12:19 PM _unreal_: that was the point that I said F this I cant use it in the business envronment
12:19 PM enleth: ranging from "get away from my UI, it's fine!" to being able to find a UI/UX designer that has a good understanding of what the UI is intended to do and is willing to contribute their time and effort
12:19 PM _unreal_: home is one thing. but T&M=lost revenue if I'm dealing with random DIY issues
12:20 PM mrec: _unreal_: you're using planet-cnc? what's that lattice / xilinx or intel(altera) based fpga?
12:20 PM _unreal_: huh?
12:20 PM _unreal_: I have no idea
12:20 PM mrec: https://planet-cnc.com/product/cnc-usb-controller-mk3-9-axis/
12:20 PM _unreal_: I have not recived the controller yet
12:20 PM mrec: can you take a picture of the board? :-)
12:21 PM mrec: ah ok
12:21 PM enleth: and the notion that "UX designer" is some webapp dweeb that serious old-school developers won't deal with
12:21 PM mrec: hmm.. NXP .. seems liek they're using an ARM on it
12:22 PM _unreal_: well thats interesting, I ordered the mk2 board. I guess they JUST stopped selling it
12:22 PM _unreal_: mk2 9 axis
12:23 PM mrec: haha you can clearly see that they try to hide the chip markings on several pictures
12:24 PM _unreal_: ya..
12:24 PM _unreal_: my home machine runs on the MK1 board
12:24 PM _unreal_: it does NOT like lots of micro movements
12:25 PM _unreal_: meaning 10k lines of gcode to make a 1/2" OD circle
12:26 PM _unreal_: I'm exaggerating but you know what I mean
12:26 PM mrec: I'm just interested in what it is made of..
12:26 PM mrec: I'm fine with the parallel port for now
12:27 PM _unreal_: par is good for 20khz
12:27 PM mrec: for a beginner like me perfect :-)
12:27 PM _unreal_: its not till you get into 1-2k+ steps per mm that you can starve a par port
12:28 PM _unreal_: starve meaning more pulses then it can feed
12:29 PM _unreal_: and hitting high mm feed rates on rapids
12:29 PM mrec: I think my requirements will grow by time
12:29 PM mrec: I still have to figure out many things
12:30 PM mrec: clamping the acrylic on the small xtable..
12:30 PM _unreal_: mrec, I would suggest making a working table
12:30 PM mrec: and still be able to cut the parts... once it shatters it's game over.
12:31 PM mrec: a portal is better for acrylic
12:31 PM _unreal_: I typically dbl sided tape it
12:31 PM roycroft: happy christmas, folks
12:31 PM roycroft: i hope you all are happy and healthy
12:31 PM _unreal_: merry christmas to you too... ya old coote ;)
12:32 PM _unreal_: I'm a little cool... today
12:32 PM _unreal_: very windy today for south florida
12:32 PM _unreal_: not sure the temp but its NOT 70's-80's
12:33 PM _unreal_: saddly I'm not really doing christmas right now. my daughter is with her mother this year for xmas :(
12:33 PM roycroft: well you can be with her in spirit at least
12:33 PM _unreal_: ya she was not excited to go
12:33 PM roycroft: it's nasty and rainy here
12:33 PM _unreal_: sad to hear from an 11yo
12:33 PM roycroft: but it's not snowing
12:34 PM _unreal_: nope NOT showing
12:34 PM _unreal_: and I should mow the lawn
12:34 PM roycroft: i actually cannot remember the last time we had a white christmas here
12:34 PM _unreal_: must be global worming
12:34 PM _unreal_: lol
12:34 PM roycroft: i think the last time i had a white christmas was in 2000, and i was in north dakota that christmas
12:34 PM _unreal_: show many feet of global worming ya got?
12:34 PM roycroft: my part of the world does not get snow often, and hasn't
12:34 PM roycroft: not since the last ice age
12:35 PM roycroft: while winters are warmer here than they used to be, global climate change is not the reason we don't have snow at christmas
12:35 PM _unreal_: I've been seeing large iguanas fall out of the tree's yesterdya and today
12:35 PM roycroft: having a climate dominated by the ocean has everything to do with it
12:36 PM _unreal_: one scared my daughter and I yesterday morning. we were out by the pool having breakfast and one belly floppyed into the canal
12:36 PM roycroft: i made slight progress on my gitlab issue last night
12:36 PM _unreal_: they are known to DIVE but THAT was a true belly flop
12:36 PM roycroft: firefox on my macs is now willing to connect to both the old and the new gitlab server
12:36 PM _unreal_: git it done? pun intended
12:36 PM roycroft: safari still refuses
12:37 PM roycroft: but i can live with this for now
12:37 PM mrec: I'm gone for tonight merry christmas! good night!
12:37 PM roycroft: and i think i may have found a way to migrate the repositories from the old to the new without a lot of fuss
12:37 PM _unreal_: later
12:37 PM roycroft: ciao, mrec
12:37 PM _unreal_: merc dbl sided tape and VAC tables are great for poly
12:37 PM _unreal_: depending on what your doing
12:38 PM _unreal_: dbl sided tape I just use 80 lb test fishing line to release
12:39 PM _unreal_: roy I'm wondering if there is an issue with the PSU I used for my NEJE laser etcher and the control?
12:39 PM _unreal_: I'm wondering if it gave it voltage spikes maybe?
12:40 PM _unreal_: direct 5v will not give full power laser any more
02:50 PM * JT-Shop makes part #9 over again after breaking off a tap...
02:51 PM Tom_L: woops
02:51 PM Tom_L: writing a program
02:53 PM JT-Shop: was hand tapping a blind hole to the bottom... without tap magic
02:54 PM Tom_L: good idea to have that especially in steel
02:55 PM Tom_L: threadmilling 2 threads on a spindle tool adapter
02:55 PM Tom_L: to hold a jacobs chuck
02:57 PM _unreal_: hate it when that happens
02:57 PM _unreal_: photos?
02:57 PM _unreal_: do you have a set of tap removers?
02:58 PM _unreal_: arg.. I need to find my HDPE nut drawings so I can modify them for 3/4" HDPE since I dont have 1" scrap currently
02:58 PM _unreal_: suckis
02:59 PM _unreal_: suckis much isss
02:59 PM _unreal_: got upgrades to do to my home cnc as well i have yet to do
02:59 PM _unreal_: I just dont want to
03:01 PM JT-Shop: 6061 is worse than steel
03:01 PM JT-Shop: cool
03:03 PM Tom_L: ok, now to cut some softjaws to hold it
03:39 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/customers/BobG/target-sys-01.jpg
03:39 PM * JT-Shop wanders out to the other shop to work on the chip chute
04:13 PM jymmmm: JT What are the red things?
04:28 PM _unreal_: interesting, I have some steppers I can not find any information on
04:28 PM _unreal_: 24hs3003-14n
04:29 PM _unreal_: moons stepping motor
04:32 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: ho ho ho
04:33 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: hello
04:33 PM _unreal_: I have 2 or 3 of these motors
04:35 PM _unreal_: 2 identical and one a little larger
04:35 PM _unreal_: hum
04:35 PM JT-Shop: lovejoy couplings
04:35 PM _unreal_: sadly got no use for them :S
04:36 PM _unreal_: some good news I found my HDPE nut cad drawing
04:48 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: how are things on xmas there in CA? Snow, fire, pestilence, meteors?
04:49 PM _unreal_: aliens
04:49 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: just cold and rain
04:50 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: how did those big batteries end up working for you?
04:51 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Still working on them. having issues running a capacity test. might be fake rewrapped cells
04:51 PM CaptHindsight: oh no
04:53 PM _unreal_: well that sucks if sooo hope its not
04:53 PM _unreal_: jymmmm, that projector still working well for ya?
04:53 PM _unreal_: the home depo one
04:54 PM jymmmm: _unreal_: haven't had a chance to put it to use, as covid came around
04:55 PM _unreal_: hum
04:55 PM _unreal_: gets any colder HERE I'm about to hang a sheet and put on a fucking fire place
04:55 PM _unreal_: project a fire place
04:55 PM CaptHindsight: I've been working on a "bunker wear" clothing line. Apocalyptic fashions.
04:56 PM _unreal_: sucks great fire pit weather and I have zero wood
04:56 PM _unreal_: plenty of coconut husks but that burns down to fast
04:56 PM _unreal_: great for starting fires
04:58 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, lookin good
04:59 PM JT-Shop: just need to machine the stepper mounts and I'm done with that part
05:00 PM Tom_L: they gonna hang off the top of those bases?
05:00 PM Tom_L: or bolt thru the side
05:01 PM JT-Shop: there is a 1/4" plate bolted to the top and the stepper bolts to that
05:03 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/chip-chute-08.jpg
05:04 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/chip-chute-09.jpg
05:04 PM JT-Shop: nuff work for today
05:06 PM Tom_L: is it done?
05:06 PM _unreal_: arg...
05:06 PM Tom_L: other than powder coat...
05:06 PM _unreal_: netbooks are SUCH shit computers
05:07 PM roycroft: hello, folks
05:08 PM roycroft: i may want to make a small gang saw
05:08 PM _unreal_: still waiting for the net book to start up...
05:08 PM roycroft: with a dozen or so blades, varying in diameter from 3" to 4"
05:08 PM _unreal_: all I want to do is job the machine
05:08 PM _unreal_: jog
05:08 PM roycroft: i wonder if horizontal mill cutters would be good for that
05:08 PM roycroft: and if they can run at high speed
05:09 PM roycroft: slitting cutters, i'm talking about
05:09 PM Tom_L: how wide?
05:09 PM roycroft: about 0.015" on average, i think
05:09 PM roycroft: well and up to about 0.075"
05:09 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Slitting_saw2.jpg
05:09 PM Tom_L: 1" arbor
05:10 PM roycroft: it's just an idea i'm toying with
05:10 PM Tom_L: small one is .5
05:10 PM roycroft: if the arbor is 1" i'd probably need to increase the diameter of the blades a bit
05:10 PM roycroft: but that's fine - it would mean higher sfm
05:10 PM Tom_L: iirc you can get .750
05:10 PM Tom_L: but most are 1"
05:11 PM roycroft: i'm a little concerned about running slitting saws because they have a keyway
05:11 PM Tom_L: the teeth are flat, not good for wood
05:11 PM roycroft: and at high rpm a key would make the shaft unbalanced
05:11 PM Tom_L: my holders don't have a key
05:12 PM roycroft: i supose if i held them in tightly enough i would not need a key
05:12 PM Tom_L: the cutters typically come with one though
05:12 PM roycroft: they would be cutting wood, not metal
05:12 PM Tom_L: the teeth are flat, not good for wood
05:12 PM Tom_L: on slitting saws
05:12 PM Tom_L: no offset
05:13 PM roycroft: yeah, that could be a problem
05:13 PM Tom_L: what about a wood saw for an angle grinder type tool
05:13 PM roycroft: especially since i want to be able to cut to full depth in a single pass
05:13 PM roycroft: i may need to custom make the blades
05:13 PM Tom_L: those are ~4" iirc
05:13 PM roycroft: although i could probably add some set to the slitting saws
05:14 PM roycroft: just take a saw set and squeeze the tips
05:15 PM _unreal_: ok part loaded machine up and running
05:15 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:15 PM _unreal_: just got to cam it up
05:15 PM _unreal_: just got to export my DXF first
05:15 PM _unreal_: THEN cam it up
05:16 PM _unreal_: so working on building my new Z HDPE nut for my new cnc machine
05:16 PM _unreal_: should be amazing when done
05:19 PM JT-Cave: Tom_L, pretty much done just a few minor things then powder coat
05:28 PM _unreal_: ok cutting my HDPE, its amazing how quiet HDPE is to cut
05:33 PM _unreal_: wondering if I have caused any fuck ups or its going wonderful :)
05:33 PM _unreal_: yall know the feeling
05:43 PM JT-Cave: roycroft, what are you trying to make?
05:59 PM Tom_L: mmm christmas dinner is served
05:59 PM JT-Cave: chicken soup here
05:59 PM Tom_L: glazed ham
05:59 PM JT-Cave: yum
06:00 PM Tom_L: scolloped potatoes, bean casserole and buns
06:00 PM JT-Cave: everything but the beans sound good to me
06:01 PM Tom_L: mushroom soup mixed with em
06:02 PM * JT-Cave doesn't eat fungus
06:04 PM * JT-Cave wonders how much he will have to take off to replace the passenger mirror???
06:04 PM Tom_L: is that tomorrow's project?
06:04 PM JT-Cave: or Sunday it's a bit warmer
06:05 PM JT-Cave: tomorrow I want to powder coat the chip chute
06:05 PM Tom_L: hopefully you won't have to remove the dash :D
06:05 PM JT-Cave: and maybe work on the uplander
06:05 PM JT-Cave: just the door panel and hopefully not all the way
06:06 PM Tom_L: they used to make cars serviceable
06:06 PM JT-Cave: yeah my 81 C10 Custom Deluxe I could sit on the inner fender and work on the V8
06:08 PM JT-Cave: serviceable because they broke down often lol
06:08 PM Tom_L: heh
06:08 PM JT-Cave: I went through transmissions and engines in the 81
06:08 PM JT-Cave: standard 3 speed on the column when I got it
06:09 PM JT-Cave: it had an AM radio but did have factory air which was not usual for a fleet truck
06:10 PM Tom_L: did they have wheel well vents or had they done away with those by then?
06:10 PM JT-Cave: not sure what that is
06:10 PM Tom_L: vent down by your feet on the side
06:10 PM JT-Cave: no
06:12 PM Tom_L: i miss those and the wing windows they used to put on cars
06:13 PM Tom_L: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cd/1965_AMC_Ambassador_detail_of_vent_window.jpg/220px-1965_AMC_Ambassador_detail_of_vent_window.jpg
06:13 PM Tom_L: for those too young to know :)
06:14 PM JT-Cave: I know what vent windows are for sure
06:15 PM JT-Cave: https://i.redd.it/4yf4k0trmgv01.jpg
06:15 PM JT-Cave: pretty much my truck
06:15 PM JT-Cave: at one time I had cheater slicks on the back lol
06:16 PM Tom_L: heh
06:16 PM _unreal_: yep I fucked up a little
06:16 PM _unreal_: forgot the holes where DRILL cycle not hole/mill cycles
06:16 PM Tom_L: ok, maybe i'll go mill this part
06:18 PM _unreal_: all of them already milled so WHAT ever
06:18 PM _unreal_: I'll just get some nylon inserts if I can find some close in size
06:19 PM _unreal_: or mill the damn thing over sigh
06:20 PM _unreal_: shit that sucks
06:20 PM veegee_: Just received my CXA tool post and holders: https://www.amazon.ca/Accusize-Wedge-Quick-Change-0251-0111/dp/B00HWFMOS2
06:20 PM veegee_: expensive but really solid
06:20 PM _unreal_: wish I had a lathe
06:21 PM veegee_: One of the tool holders has a knurling wheel on the other end
06:21 PM veegee_: Going to try that out
06:22 PM _unreal_: wish I had a lathe
06:22 PM veegee_: _unreal_ where do you live?
06:22 PM _unreal_: florida
06:22 PM veegee_: ah
06:22 PM veegee_: well anyone in the Toronto area is welcome to come to my workshop
06:23 PM _unreal_: bit of a hike for mne
06:23 PM _unreal_: when I lived in maine. that would STILL be a bit of a hike
06:25 PM _unreal_: arg...
06:25 PM veegee_: The raymond reach truck has binary servo valves and varies the pump speed. I want to replace it with fully variable servo valves
06:25 PM _unreal_: I have to up the bolts to 1/4" bolts hehe
06:25 PM veegee_: I wonder how much they cost
06:26 PM _unreal_: not a clue
06:26 PM veegee_: Potentially almost as much as what I bought the whole thing for
06:29 PM veegee_: https://www.safety-video-bmsh.com/Funny-Forklift-Videos--How-Not-To-Operate-a-Forklift_b_1.html
06:29 PM veegee_: I need to archive that video. It got taken down off most sites for some reason
06:31 PM veegee_: Hmm everyone keeps saying that it's not funny
06:31 PM veegee_: I disagree, I'm laughing quite a bit
06:32 PM veegee_: That one dude riding the regular pallet jack and doing a 180, what a boss
06:34 PM XXCoder: the spinning ones is really dumb
06:34 PM XXCoder: they should in least rise fork up 2-3 feet
06:34 PM XXCoder: that way if they fall off, can get under blades
06:38 PM roycroft: so backing up my old gitlab server and restoring it to the new one absolutely does not work, but i've figured out how to export/import projects from the commmand line, and now i'm migrating them that way
06:38 PM roycroft: i've verified that the lfs objects are migrating along with the current state
06:38 PM XXCoder: whats wrong with old one
06:38 PM roycroft: creation/mod times are retained
06:38 PM roycroft: i tried renaming it and that confused my macs to the point that they refuse to talk to it, either with the old name or the new
06:39 PM JT-Cave: roycroft, did you see my planer chip chute?
06:39 PM roycroft: the windows/linux machines were fine with the renaming, but macos refused to talk
06:39 PM roycroft: no
06:39 PM roycroft: link?
06:39 PM roycroft: and happy christmas
06:39 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/chip-chute-08.jpg
06:39 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/chip-chute-09.jpg
06:40 PM JT-Cave: almost done
06:40 PM roycroft: nice
06:40 PM roycroft: i wish mine would go off to the side like that
06:40 PM roycroft: or up
06:40 PM roycroft: it just goes straight back and gets in the way
06:40 PM JT-Cave: thanks, maybe the rest of the parts will show up Monday
06:40 PM roycroft: that should work well for you
06:40 PM JT-Cave: the original broken one came out the back
06:41 PM JT-Cave: can't wait to try it out
06:41 PM roycroft: hmm, i've moved almost 100 repositories this afternoon so far, including the two biggest ones
06:41 PM roycroft: i have about 300 to go
06:41 PM roycroft: i should be able to get this all done this weekend, with time to spare for other stuff
06:41 PM XXCoder: wow youre been busy
06:42 PM roycroft: xxcoder: since the gitlab server broke on my macs, i haven't been able to do any cad work at all for over 2 weeks
06:42 PM roycroft: this is stopping progress on almost everything i do
06:42 PM roycroft: so yeah, i'm rather determined to get the migration done
06:42 PM roycroft: and i'm not going to just migrate the projects i need to work on right now
06:42 PM XXCoder: I bet. just wondering why renaming broke it
06:42 PM veegee_: XXCoder raise the forks up so you can slice him in half as he's falling off
06:42 PM roycroft: if i do that then i'll slack off on moving the rest
06:43 PM XXCoder: or mangle him vee
06:43 PM roycroft: and it will be a limbo project
06:43 PM JT-Cave: https://www.lumberjocks.com/shipwright/blog/31845
06:43 PM roycroft: i don't know, xxcoder, and that's why it's been broken for 2+ weeks
06:43 PM XXCoder: strange
06:43 PM veegee_: roycroft what's the issue?
06:43 PM roycroft: i've been trying to fix it
06:43 PM XXCoder: wonder if mac versions cache stuff
06:43 PM veegee_: I work with gitlab every day
06:43 PM roycroft: i renamed my gitlab server from gitlab.domain.com to gitlab.domain.net
06:43 PM veegee_: I've never had a single problem with it and migrating
06:43 PM roycroft: and when i did tha tmy macs refused to talk to it
06:44 PM roycroft: windows and linux were fine
06:44 PM roycroft: but the macs would drop the connection to the web interface
06:44 PM roycroft: i renamed it back
06:44 PM veegee_: did you clear your cache?
06:44 PM roycroft: i even restored the snapshot i made right before renaming it
06:44 PM veegee_: certain HTTP redirects get cached
06:44 PM roycroft: yes, i've cleared caches and cookies
06:44 PM roycroft: the macs will not talk to it with either the old name or the new one
06:44 PM veegee_: did you try to debug the HTTP request/responses?
06:44 PM roycroft: so i finally just renamed it back to the old one
06:45 PM roycroft: yes
06:45 PM roycroft: it's the macs that are dropping the connection
06:45 PM veegee_: this is just for the web frontend right?
06:45 PM roycroft: and one time i saw a weird error that suggested that macs think that some serial number is duplicated
06:45 PM roycroft: yes
06:45 PM roycroft: i can ssh/git/whatever just fine
06:46 PM roycroft: it's just the web front end that's the issue
06:46 PM roycroft: but the web front end is the whole reason i use gitlab
06:46 PM roycroft: if i did not need that i'd just use git
06:46 PM veegee_: Try to debug it with this: https://httpie.io/
06:46 PM roycroft: i don't use any of the other tools that gitlab provides
06:46 PM veegee_: what layer of the network stack is it dropping the connection on?
06:46 PM roycroft: i'll look at that, but i'm already in the middle of the migration
06:47 PM veegee_: I would also wireshark or similar if it's not at the HTTP layer
06:47 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, i'm not really interested in debugging it any more right now
06:47 PM roycroft: i'm interested in getting back to work
06:48 PM roycroft: however, when i'm done with the migration, i'm going to archive the old gitlab vm, because i may want to get back to riguring out the problem later
06:48 PM roycroft: i do not ever want to manually move a set of repositories again
06:49 PM roycroft: i also really wish i knew why doing a gitlab backup on the one machine and restoring it on the other did not work
06:49 PM roycroft: it moved all the files
06:49 PM roycroft: it created the database
06:49 PM roycroft: all my user settings and groups and projects were there
06:49 PM roycroft: but every project showed no files
06:49 PM roycroft: even though i verified that the files were restored
06:49 PM roycroft: it was several GB of files i moved
06:50 PM roycroft: so yeah, i want to keep the old broken vm around
06:50 PM roycroft: and i created a dataset on my nas to store its concept of the repositories
06:50 PM buzzmarshall: hm... i wonder if the mac os gatekeeper is giving you greive
06:50 PM roycroft: i have the firewall disabled
06:51 PM buzzmarshall: i don't use gitlab anymore but no of others with macs that had trouble with the gatekeeper settings depending on the versions
06:51 PM buzzmarshall: soemthing about the gatekeepers certificate
06:51 PM roycroft: i rebuilt gitlab.domain.net from scratch today
06:52 PM roycroft: and i installed the same certificate on it that i tried on the old machine when i renamed it
06:52 PM roycroft: now firefox will connect to it on my macs, but safari still refuses
06:52 PM roycroft: i can live with that for now
06:52 PM roycroft: it's a really weird problem
06:53 PM veegee_: roycroft I would diff the databases and check file permissions and such
06:53 PM roycroft: jt-shop: i ended up getting one of those adjustable hvac elbows and connected it to my dust chute, pointing up at about a 20 degree angle
06:53 PM roycroft: i did not diff the databases
06:53 PM roycroft: but i did check permissions/ownerships
06:54 PM veegee_: is it sitting beind nginx or something?
06:54 PM roycroft: i also finally discovered that gitlab by default refuses to talk to another git repository on the same network
06:54 PM buzzmarshall: ya macs can be like that... don't get me wrong tho as i like and have used macs since the beginning and keep a couple of them in my server farm but no adays i just use linux on all my dev stuff
06:54 PM roycroft: and figured out how to disable that "feature"
06:54 PM roycroft: yes, it's a stock gitlab ce install on debian, which installs nginx
06:54 PM roycroft: which is a web serer that i never use except for turnkey apps
06:54 PM veegee_: nginx is the best one I've used
06:55 PM roycroft: so my nginx debugging skills are non-existent
06:55 PM veegee_: but I doubt it has anything to do with this issue
06:55 PM roycroft: i still use apache
06:55 PM roycroft: and i forget what nginx was lacking that we needed when i loked at it, but it was lacking something
06:55 PM roycroft: that's been a while
06:56 PM roycroft: and i'm sure it's not nginx
06:56 PM roycroft: the local web browser is dropping the conneciton during the initial handshaking
06:56 PM buzzmarshall: ive always used apache but lately have used nginx for a few things and its actually pretty good
06:56 PM roycroft: it's getting some token or something back from the gitlab server an the os is decideing that it's unhappy with it
06:57 PM roycroft: my impression, based on a distant memory from when i looked at nginx years ago, is that it's lean, fast, secure, but lacking in features that isps generally want/need
06:58 PM roycroft: and i do not remember any of those missing features specifically
06:58 PM roycroft: and i'm just not interested enough to revisit it now
06:59 PM roycroft: apache still works for what we do
07:00 PM roycroft: it occurs to me that i never set up snapshots and replication on nas for the dataset i'm using for the new gitlab repository
07:00 PM roycroft: i should probably do that before i move more stuff
07:00 PM roycroft: not that i'd lose any actual data if there were a disaster
07:01 PM veegee_: I'm guessing it has something to do with SSL
07:01 PM roycroft: the old server still has everything, and the nas replicates to another nas in-house, so i have two copies of all the data that way
07:01 PM roycroft: and the replication nas syncs all the gitlab files offsite every 15 minutes
07:01 PM roycroft: so there's a third, offsite copy
07:01 PM roycroft: i think so too, veegee_
07:02 PM roycroft: when i get bored and get back to it maybe enough time will have passed that i'll see it with essentially fresh eyes and find the problem
07:02 PM roycroft: plus, once i get everything migrated and can use the files again, there will be no pressure to get it fixed
07:03 PM roycroft: sometimes taking the pressure off facilitates finding the problem
07:03 PM roycroft: the immediate issue is that i'm going to be building a new bookcase fairly soon
07:03 PM roycroft: i only have the plans half drawn
07:04 PM roycroft: i purchased some of the wood for it a few weeks ago, becaue it was only semi-dry
07:04 PM roycroft: it's down to 11.1% moisture now, and drying out steadily, so i'll be able to start machining soon
07:04 PM roycroft: i need to get the drawings finished for that
07:06 PM roycroft: well thanks a lot, freenas
07:07 PM roycroft: i upgraded the primary nas to 11.3 a few weeks ago
07:07 PM roycroft: they changed the snapshot mechanism and there were no warnings about that
07:07 PM roycroft: half of my scheduled snapshots are marked "legacy" now, and have not run since the upgrade
07:08 PM roycroft: and there's no mechanism to covert the "legacy" method to the current one, so i guess i get to delete all those snapshot/replication tasks and recreate them using the new method
09:11 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Chuck_Holder1.jpg
09:11 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Chuck_Holder2.jpg
09:19 PM XXCoder: how do that work?
09:20 PM Tom_L: meh
09:20 PM Tom_L: supposed to be a holder for a jacobs chuck
09:22 PM Tom_L: threads turned out good but i'm not that happy with it
09:22 PM Tom_L: sometimes lathe parts are best done on a lathe
09:23 PM XXCoder: dont have one?
09:23 PM Tom_L: not like that but i may get one
09:23 PM Tom_L: the one i have is a MT
09:24 PM Tom_L: i want a 'qucker' change version
09:27 PM XXCoder: cool :)
09:28 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, you have a lathe, I should design a micro chuck for you to build for me :)
09:28 PM _unreal_: for a 3-4 jaw
10:22 PM veegee_: Tom_L fun fact: I knew a guy named Chuck Holder
10:22 PM veegee_: I also knew a guy named Richard Holder
10:22 PM veegee_: He insisted on "Richard", not Dick
10:23 PM Tom_L: can't imagine why
10:23 PM XXCoder: my shop teacher was mr. hammer
10:23 PM veegee_: Chuck Holder isn't that bad, but did neither of the parents really think it through when they named the kid Richard Holder?
10:23 PM XXCoder: sadly that class was last one he taught. it wasnt retirement

11:44 PM flyback: and rusty kuntz
