05:15 AM Tom_L: morning
05:22 AM XXCoder: yo
05:28 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:28 AM Tom_L: 23F
05:28 AM Tom_L: chilly morning
05:31 AM JT-Cave: tonight is 15°F here 27-33°F today
09:22 AM unterhaus_: someone on the ML said he was reversing his spindle "all the time"
09:23 AM unterhaus_: someone else calculated that meant $4000 per year in electricity
09:34 AM skunkworks: heha
10:29 AM roycroft: well the trade deal, at least
10:29 AM roycroft: i'm actually pretty impressed
10:29 AM roycroft: i did not think johnson would be able to get it done
10:30 AM roycroft: i'm not sure if it's a good deal for the uk, but it's almost certainly a better deal than reverting to wto terms
11:02 AM gregcnc: reversing the spindle is a pain, mixed tooling and old programs even more so
11:08 AM gregcnc: oooh...where else can i stack things? https://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/hvo/d/chicago-benchman-vmc-5000-cnc-milling/7251899275.html
11:11 AM unterhaus_: I went to electronics recycling yesterday, I was tempted to go computer shopping
11:11 AM unterhaus_: I suppose they would frown on that though
11:14 AM unterhaus_: gregcnc "once hooked up it should work as it should" -- that's reassuring
11:15 AM gregcnc: obviously they know nothing about it, the control and software are missing
11:15 AM unterhaus_: heh
11:16 AM unterhaus_: I suppose that means the price is optimistic?
11:17 AM gregcnc: not a terrible asking price if all the control hardware is in the back
11:18 AM gregcnc: this one sold pretty quick https://www.ebay.com/itm/184581481560
11:19 AM Tom_L: but it should work from your pc....
11:20 AM gregcnc: it will.... once you build a linuxcnc control for it
11:22 AM gregcnc: macgalempsy here has one, maybe still working on it
11:24 AM Tom_L: wonder what the work envelope is
11:32 AM gregcnc: X:12" Y:6" Z:9" probably less X with the table mount tool changer
11:32 AM gregcnc: the Benchman XT is the neat one. 20 tool carousel iirc
11:33 AM Tom_L: cast iron frame?
11:34 AM gregcnc: epoxy with round rails. they were marketed for graphite electrodes
11:34 AM gregcnc: and class rooms
11:46 AM gregcnc: https://youtu.be/_qhZFGOKkEk
11:46 AM Tom_L: that would be nice to have
11:48 AM roycroft: practically speaking, you can use the same profile cutter for metric or us customary threading
11:48 AM roycroft: the thread profiles are quite similar
11:49 AM roycroft: it's more likely that your machining skills will introduce more error than using the wrong profile cutter
11:49 AM roycroft: using an acme profile cutter is right out though
11:50 AM _unreal_: right out?
11:51 AM gregcnc: that produces an ACME thread, not 60°
11:51 AM _unreal_: ahh
11:51 AM roycroft: right out meaning it won't work
11:51 AM gregcnc: as opposed to left out
11:51 AM _unreal_: I have an ACME lead screw as well I'm toying to doing something with.
11:51 AM _unreal_: but I have yet to dig it out of what it is sitting in
11:51 AM _unreal_: and if I do/did I'd make an HDPE nut
11:51 AM _unreal_: was a LIFT for a bed
11:51 AM _unreal_: the original nut has way to much slop
11:51 AM roycroft: i've never purchased a fancy-shmancy thread cutting tool
11:52 AM roycroft: i just grind my own
11:52 AM gregcnc: you'll want a tap for that probably
11:52 AM _unreal_: one off if anything
11:52 AM _unreal_: but I'm just trying to find the right bit right now for cutting 1/4-20
11:52 AM gregcnc: I've never ground my own, always used fancy shmancy
11:52 AM _unreal_: its for the new cnc machine
11:53 AM _unreal_: i REALLY dont want to manually thread ? upto 75 ish holes
11:53 AM _unreal_: when ever I get to getting the plate that will go on it
11:53 AM gregcnc: is this a lathe part?
11:53 AM _unreal_: mill
11:53 AM gregcnc: you want a tap or thread mill
11:53 AM _unreal_: thread mill
11:54 AM _unreal_: thread mill 1/4-20 range,
11:54 AM _unreal_: planning on putting a 3/8-1/2" plate on my new cnc machine
11:55 AM gregcnc: https://www.micro100.com/products/thread-milling-cutters---single-form---un-threads
11:55 AM roycroft: so you'll be tapping through holes in plate?
11:55 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo7SwanH50I
11:55 AM Tom_L: _unreal_, that will show you how to make an acme thread
11:56 AM _unreal_: roy ya
11:56 AM roycroft: then get a tap
11:56 AM roycroft: not a single point tool
11:56 AM _unreal_: I would rather let the cnc thread its own holes
11:56 AM _unreal_: then manually tap them
11:57 AM roycroft: it can do that with a tap
11:57 AM _unreal_: ?
11:57 AM gregcnc: maybe
11:57 AM roycroft: get one that's made for machine tapping
11:57 AM gregcnc: 22kRPM spindle wont
11:57 AM Tom_L: :)
11:57 AM Tom_L: it might start one hole
11:57 AM _unreal_: ya hehe my 1.5kw spindle wont run a tap
11:57 AM Tom_L: mine will
11:57 AM roycroft: you're not going to cut threads in steel at 22krpm with a single point tool
11:58 AM _unreal_: who said anything about steel
11:58 AM roycroft: oh, pardon me
11:58 AM _unreal_: I said aluminum plate
11:58 AM roycroft: i assumed a fixture plate would be steel
11:58 AM roycroft: i did not see you mention the material
11:59 AM roycroft: if it's a fixture plate and it's aluminium you really need to install threaded steel inserts in it
11:59 AM Tom_L: _unreal_, get yourself a set of these: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/thread_mills/Thread_mill2.jpg
11:59 AM roycroft: if you just tap the holes in the aluminium you'll wear them out in no time
11:59 AM gregcnc: only if you think you'll wear out the aliminum
11:59 AM _unreal_: Tom_L, thats what I'm looking for
11:59 AM _unreal_: I have yet to find a set
11:59 AM _unreal_: only singles and I've never played with thread mills so hehe I dont kinow much about them
11:59 AM Tom_L: i can cut 3/4 16 with a sherline with those
12:00 PM _unreal_: making tapping gcode is easy enough
12:00 PM _unreal_: I just need the bit(s)
12:00 PM gregcnc: https://www.ebay.com/itm/254807235792
12:00 PM gregcnc: you don't use tapping code with a thread mill
12:01 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkAAWT7Nxd8
12:01 PM roycroft: a bit goes in a horse's mouth :)
12:01 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, ^^
12:02 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, that be meee gaol
12:02 PM _unreal_: goal
12:02 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/thread_mills/Mill_Holder_Steel1.jpg
12:03 PM Tom_L: http://onlinecarbide.com/sipithmi.html
12:04 PM gregcnc: I have some from online carbide. good price and quality
12:04 PM Tom_L: i like them so far
12:05 PM _unreal_: I can https://www.amazon.com/Micro-100-ITM-064613G-Dimensions-Projection/dp/B00Q8MBHWE/ref=sr_1_194?dchild=1&keywords=Thread+Mill&qid=1608831019&s=industrial&sr=1-194
12:05 PM _unreal_: I'm thinking about that
12:05 PM Tom_L: when i had the sherline motor on the spindle it enabled me to cut threads i normally couldn't
12:06 PM _unreal_: wish I could find a kit of them but I guess I'll have to settle for a single
12:07 PM gregcnc: _unreal_ should work if the reach is acceptable. these have no top rake, but for aluminum shouldn't matter
12:07 PM gregcnc: I don't like holding tools with flat in ER collets either
12:07 PM Tom_L: i can cut between 10/32 to 3/4 10 which is well within the range of any thread i would need
12:08 PM Tom_L: unless of course i need another 1.5 - 3 agaim
12:08 PM Tom_L: n
12:09 PM gregcnc: heh, i grabbed one to look at and it's that one
12:09 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/thread1.jpg
12:11 PM _unreal_: so just ordered that bit
12:11 PM _unreal_: thread mill
12:11 PM _unreal_: should be here by the 29th
12:11 PM _unreal_: :)
12:11 PM gregcnc: doh
12:11 PM Tom_L: now you just need to program a helix with lead in lead out moves
12:11 PM _unreal_: I can do that with fusion, and estlcam
12:12 PM _unreal_: easy
12:12 PM _unreal_: just minus the hardware
12:12 PM gregcnc: you may need to check the min bore it actually fits if you spin the tool
12:12 PM _unreal_: Micro 100 ITM-064613G Right Hand 60° Internal Single Point Threading Tool, Tin Coated, Metric Dimensions, 4.6 mm Minimum Bore Diameter, 1.2 mm Projection, 13 mm Maximum Bore Depth, 0.71 mm Offset Point, 18 to 56 Threads per Inch, 6 mm Shank Diameter, 57 mm Overall Length, Solid Carbide Tool
12:13 PM Tom_L: but yet big enough to cut the size thread you need
12:13 PM _unreal_: 4.6
12:13 PM gregcnc: that assumes the part is spinning
12:13 PM _unreal_: 4.6mm minimum
12:13 PM _unreal_: it would HAVE to hehe
12:13 PM _unreal_: would not make sense to give a minimum board when not spinning
12:13 PM _unreal_: the only way to use it then would be to LEAD into the part top down
12:13 PM gregcnc: these are not normally used in mills
12:14 PM Tom_L: lathe tools
12:14 PM Tom_L: yeah, i wouldn't put that flat in a collet either
12:15 PM gregcnc: see the back side? that at 3mm radius from the center
12:15 PM gregcnc: 6mm min bore if you spin the tool
12:15 PM Tom_L: which is larger than the 1/4 20 you want
12:16 PM gregcnc: this machining stuff is hard
12:16 PM Tom_L: so confusing
12:16 PM Tom_L: :)
12:17 PM _unreal_: hum
12:17 PM Tom_L: that tool is too big for 1/4 20
12:19 PM gregcnc: and actually the point never stick out beyond the back, so unless you mount it in offset holder won't work
12:20 PM _unreal_: https://www.micro100.com/products/thread-milling-cutters---single-form---un-threads
12:20 PM _unreal_: so what would be my idea tool then
12:20 PM gregcnc: sorry should have been obvious in the first place
12:20 PM _unreal_: I'm looking at upto 1/2" plate aluminum
12:21 PM _unreal_: and standard ER11
12:21 PM _unreal_: I'm thinking this one
12:21 PM _unreal_: TM-250-18
12:22 PM gregcnc: no
12:22 PM gregcnc: tm-180- 8 or 12
12:23 PM Tom_L: http://onlinecarbide.com/142056tpi.html
12:24 PM _unreal_: then 12
12:24 PM _unreal_: with the 3/4" stroke
12:24 PM gregcnc: but really, a tap, tap guide, and cordless drill.....
12:24 PM _unreal_: .5 would be to risky of bottoming ut
12:25 PM _unreal_: I tapped all the holes by hand on my home cnc NEVER AGAIN
12:25 PM Tom_L: just get a 1/4 20 helical tap and stuff it in a drill
12:26 PM Tom_L: might get 2
12:26 PM Tom_L: a regular and a bottoming tap
12:26 PM Tom_L: for blind holes
12:28 PM Tom_L: onlinecarbide is cheaper than that micro100 site
12:31 PM gregcnc: some one I follow just did thread mill a plate for a router/mill he is building. even cut his own single tooth thread mill
12:32 PM _unreal_: at this point https://www.ebay.com/itm/254807235792 is looking to be the most tempting
12:32 PM roycroft: a thread mill would be better than a single point tool, for sure
12:32 PM roycroft: personally, i'd use a helical tap in a battery drill
12:33 PM _unreal_: roycroft, thats what I did and still took all day for my home machine
12:33 PM _unreal_: with clutch etc...
12:33 PM Tom_L: what's the rush?
12:33 PM roycroft: how many thousand holes did you have to tap?
12:33 PM _unreal_: and I still broke one tap near the end
12:33 PM _unreal_: on my home machine ahh one sec
12:33 PM Tom_L: probably got chipped or dull
12:34 PM roycroft: tapping 1/4-20 holes in aluminium i'd figure doing one every 10 seconds or so
12:34 PM gregcnc: rogue is a small direct sell maker. I haven't tried their stuff. one review from someone I know wasn't happy with the finish from their double angle mills
12:34 PM _unreal_: 120
12:34 PM _unreal_: one inch squared
12:34 PM roycroft: so that's 20 minutes of tapping
12:34 PM _unreal_: 10x12
12:34 PM gregcnc: your time vs cost of tooling?
12:34 PM Tom_L: he works cheap
12:35 PM gregcnc: exactly
12:35 PM _unreal_: 1/4" in 1/2" aluminum 10 seconds BULLSHIT
12:35 PM _unreal_: tapping
12:35 PM roycroft: with a battery drill
12:35 PM gregcnc: with a drill?
12:35 PM roycroft: that should be an easy pace
12:35 PM _unreal_: o,O
12:35 PM roycroft: just for the tapping
12:36 PM roycroft: you would use the cnc for the pilot holes and chamfers, i assume
12:36 PM _unreal_: no tap by hand would cut large threads like that at that speed
12:36 PM roycroft: um
12:36 PM _unreal_: the tap would bind
12:36 PM gregcnc: you're doing something wrong
12:36 PM roycroft: 1/4-20 is not a "large" thread by any stretch of the imagination
12:37 PM roycroft: it's on the larger side of a tiny thread
12:37 PM _unreal_: heheh large side of tiny lol true
12:37 PM roycroft: 2" is a large thread
12:37 PM roycroft: 1/2" is a medium thread
12:37 PM roycroft: 3/4" is a large medium thread or a small large thread
12:38 PM _unreal_: A CNC with a high precision encodered spindle is one thing
12:38 PM _unreal_: for doing fast taping
12:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/thread1.jpg
12:38 PM gregcnc: just what I could find quick https://youtu.be/pHXQER42rzU
12:38 PM Tom_L: i consider that a large thread
12:38 PM gregcnc: impact though, derp
12:38 PM _unreal_: EVEN fiberglass wont thread that fast
12:38 PM _unreal_: and fiberglass threads a lot faster then aluminum
12:39 PM gregcnc: https://youtu.be/5AQUodkQZbg
12:40 PM gregcnc: tap slips in that one?
12:40 PM Tom_L: don't try to use a straight flute tap with that though
12:41 PM Tom_L: and i bet he used wd-40 as a lubricant too
12:43 PM roycroft: even if it took you 30 seconds per hole, that's still only an hour
12:43 PM roycroft: not all fripping day
12:43 PM roycroft: how long is it going to take you to set up and dial in the thread mill?
12:43 PM roycroft: and program the cnc to tap all the holes
12:44 PM gregcnc: reality is that single from thread milling will still take an hour
12:44 PM roycroft: and if you don't have flood/mist lubricant on your machine, you'll have to stand there and squirt wd-40 on every hole as it is tapped
12:44 PM Tom_L: they are slower but more versatile
12:44 PM _unreal_: I had run lines for that on the new mill
12:44 PM roycroft: it seems that a helical tap in a drill would probably be the fastest way to do it
12:44 PM Tom_L: that's why i got a set
12:44 PM _unreal_: still waiting to get that last damn part milled though sucks
12:45 PM _unreal_: keep getting delayed, no one can FACE the surface I need done
12:45 PM _unreal_: and I didnt get to do anything yesterday because I got FUCKED over by work taking over someone elses project out of the blue with no info nothing and being told I'm taking to long
12:45 PM roycroft: if you're looking for an excuse to buy tooling, 1. i'll never complain about that - it's a noble cause, and 2. you can easily justify this job as an excuse for the new tooling
12:45 PM _unreal_: that manager is going to get a spanking when we return to work in two weeks
12:46 PM roycroft: but if you're just trying to get it done as fast as possible, do it with a drill
12:46 PM _unreal_: he fucked over a higher up manager as well
12:46 PM gregcnc: excuses aren't necessary to buy tooling
12:46 PM Tom_L: never
12:46 PM roycroft: you must not be married :)
12:46 PM roycroft: or have any other kind of boss
12:46 PM Tom_L: i still kinda wonder how i worked in that spindle motor :)
12:46 PM roycroft: it's always good to have an excuse in your pocket
12:47 PM _unreal_: that statement "<gregcnc> excuses aren't necessary to buy tooling" has Harbor Freight written all over it
12:47 PM gregcnc: i'm the boss, and I am married
12:47 PM Tom_L: roycroft, or a 'she' project in mind for the tool you want
12:47 PM roycroft: no it doesn't
12:47 PM roycroft: because harbor freight don't sell tooling
12:47 PM roycroft: they sell frustration
12:47 PM _unreal_: lol
12:47 PM _unreal_: true
12:47 PM Tom_L: i got a drill from them i never got to use
12:47 PM _unreal_: at a cheap price
12:47 PM Tom_L: it broke halfway thru the first hole
12:48 PM Tom_L: the drill motor...
12:48 PM _unreal_: I ahve not had to many tools out right fail on me from them
12:48 PM _unreal_: other then AIR tools
12:48 PM roycroft: i buy angle grinders from them
12:48 PM _unreal_: I've had some air tools go KIA real fast
12:48 PM Tom_L: wasn't worth the gas/time to return it
12:48 PM gregcnc: i don't shop HF, but did look at jacks there recently they seem to have gone up in price
12:48 PM roycroft: because they're always on sale for $15, and they usually last through at least one job
12:48 PM Tom_L: i did that one time because i needed an angle drill for a job
12:48 PM _unreal_: most of my HF tools have survived
12:48 PM roycroft: i get a few things from them
12:49 PM _unreal_: then again I use them
12:49 PM Tom_L: the gearhead stripped on the first hole
12:49 PM roycroft: i haven't been to hf in a couple months or longer
12:49 PM gregcnc: frick
12:49 PM roycroft: i used to get my nitrile gloves from them, but they no longer carry them
12:49 PM _unreal_: they may have them again
12:49 PM roycroft: they just have empty shelves where the gloves used to be
12:49 PM roycroft: they didn't when i was last there
12:49 PM _unreal_: who knows
12:49 PM roycroft: they had empty shelves and signs that said "limit one per customer"
12:50 PM roycroft: which is fine
12:50 PM roycroft: i don't need more than one box of emptiness at a time
12:50 PM roycroft: anyway, i have plenty of nitrile gloves
12:50 PM Tom_L: so roycroft
12:50 PM roycroft: i ran a little low earlier this year, but never got even close to running out
12:50 PM Tom_L: have you put your first ding in your wood table yet?
12:50 PM roycroft: of course
12:51 PM roycroft: i didn't do it on purpose
12:51 PM roycroft: but i was relieved when i did
12:51 PM Tom_L: ahh good.. now you can use it!
12:51 PM roycroft: yes!
12:51 PM _unreal_: eh
12:51 PM roycroft: i don't have to worry about it
12:51 PM roycroft: i'll take care of the bench
12:51 PM _unreal_: fuck it ordering that one https://www.ebay.com/itm/254807235792
12:51 PM roycroft: but it's not a piece of furniture
12:51 PM roycroft: it's a tool
12:53 PM roycroft: only a few days after i installed the bench as my primary bench i had a chisel slip and put a little cut in the bench top
12:53 PM Tom_L: did you cry?
12:53 PM roycroft: no, i was relieved and happy
12:53 PM roycroft: i thought "good, now it's done and i don't have to worry about that any more"
12:54 PM _unreal_: there ordered and paid for
12:54 PM _unreal_: cancled the amazon one
12:54 PM _unreal_: so do you guys rememeber the fiberglass shell I built for housing an SMC
12:54 PM _unreal_: ?
12:55 PM _unreal_: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNjUL9VJW4BIh58ZOHM6jOWS10l43lfzL_nr7FMD-YXm_o6hG63BfTN2Rv6ch6C_Q?key=OVV0UTBXUmF0NXNSR2NKVzdoaFhxQzVTbDI5V3JB
12:55 PM _unreal_: I DUG out the tinker board. has done nothing but piss me off
12:55 PM _unreal_: do to its booting problems
12:56 PM roycroft: i worked as a shipwright at a boat factor back in the '80s
12:56 PM _unreal_: and have not mounted the RPI3
12:56 PM _unreal_: now
12:56 PM roycroft: fiberglass hull luxury yachts
12:56 PM roycroft: when i left that job i wanted to go nowhere near fiberglass ever again
12:56 PM roycroft: and i've mostly avoided it ever since
12:57 PM _unreal_: FRP in the 80's vs today is way different
12:57 PM Tom_L: i've done a few molds and tend to agree with you
12:57 PM roycroft: i hate that stuff
12:57 PM roycroft: it's very versatile
12:57 PM roycroft: and it can look attractive
12:57 PM _unreal_: hehe
12:57 PM roycroft: but it's about the worst material i've ever worked with
12:57 PM _unreal_: I was half waiting for one of you to ask for a shell from me LOL
12:57 PM roycroft: it has that sickly sweet smell
12:57 PM roycroft: it's messy
12:57 PM _unreal_: have not sold a shell in a year though oh well
12:58 PM Tom_L: machining phenolic rates right up there too
12:58 PM _unreal_: but ya I'm in the works of putting the RPI3 in
12:58 PM _unreal_: with that protoneer board
12:58 PM roycroft: and it's just nasty when you get a cut from it
12:58 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, what for?
12:58 PM _unreal_: mess=lack of experence
12:59 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I'm going to turn it into a laser etcher
01:00 PM _unreal_: I dont need a grbl cnc mill of any kind.
01:00 PM _unreal_: bug grbl laser is an other story
01:00 PM roycroft: i priced out safety shields for my laser
01:00 PM roycroft: that stuff is bloody expensive
01:01 PM _unreal_: originally it was going to be the new cnc machine controller but the company that was suposed to build the parts for the original design. never did anthing and kept delaying me hence the new "new" cnc machine that I'm building
01:01 PM _unreal_: I still need to collect my hardware from that company
01:01 PM roycroft: a 12"x18" (300mm x 450mm) sheet of laser-absorbant plastic would cost me $300
01:01 PM _unreal_: hum
01:01 PM roycroft: i'm thinking of making a tiny window for the door
01:02 PM roycroft: instead of making the whole front door out of the special plastic
01:02 PM _unreal_: do you have a laser etcher?
01:02 PM roycroft: i just got a 6000mw laser for my 3d printer, and i intend to do etching with it
01:02 PM roycroft: resist etching - it's not powerful enough to directly etch metals
01:02 PM _unreal_: hum
01:03 PM _unreal_: maybe think about a magnetic shield? that has the laser shielding
01:03 PM roycroft: i'm not doing anything with it until i build a safe enclosure for the printer
01:03 PM _unreal_: snap it on
01:03 PM _unreal_: covers the work area
01:03 PM roycroft: so that i don't put my eye out or put my neighbors' eyes out
01:03 PM _unreal_: neighbors?
01:03 PM roycroft: the printer is right next to a window
01:03 PM _unreal_: ahh
01:04 PM roycroft: i'll enclose the back and sides
01:04 PM roycroft: and the top
01:04 PM roycroft: and put a door on the front
01:04 PM _unreal_: I'm also looking at just adding laser to my home cnc
01:04 PM roycroft: i also need to figure out some kind of air exahust system for it
01:04 PM roycroft: i already printed a quick change tool mount for my printer
01:04 PM _unreal_: and making a custom laser enclosure that mag snaps onto my dust shield upper mount
01:05 PM _unreal_: that way I could just swap parts out real quick
01:05 PM roycroft: with a plate for the hot end, a plate for the laser, and a plate to hold a dial indicator so i can level the bed more easily
01:05 PM _unreal_: and have a nice shield
01:05 PM _unreal_: with a single front view window
01:05 PM _unreal_: and black rubber block for the sides
01:05 PM _unreal_: but thats all planning at this point
01:05 PM roycroft: i'm still working on the wiring
01:05 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about using 11w1 d-shell connectors
01:06 PM roycroft: the big hole in the middle of the connector would be for the bowden tube when i connect the hot end
01:06 PM roycroft: and i would just not use that hole when mounting the laser or indicator
01:06 PM roycroft: i would not need any connectors for the indicator, of course
01:07 PM _unreal_: interesting connector never seen that kind of dsub
01:07 PM _unreal_: assuming the center one is used as power?
01:07 PM roycroft: usually yes
01:07 PM roycroft: you can get them with a big copper lug in the middle, or with a hole in the middle
01:08 PM _unreal_: those are interesting https://www.amazon.com/Carbide-Thread-Milling-M10X1-5-coating/dp/B07VH912TR
01:12 PM roycroft: so i had a cunning plan yesterday, to fuel my vehicle, purchase groceries, and anything else i might need to get me through the weekend so i would not have to deal with last minute shopping madness
01:13 PM roycroft: i thought i did really well, but last night when i did the dishes i realised i had no more dishwasher detergent
01:13 PM roycroft: it looks like i have to make a run to target today
01:13 PM roycroft: that's gonna be nuts
01:13 PM Tom_L: i figured that when i went to the post office yesterday
01:13 PM roycroft: i thought i had two more boxes of detergent
01:14 PM Tom_L: there was nobody there but workers
01:14 PM roycroft: the post office is fine
01:14 PM roycroft: yesterday was too late to mail stuff for christmas
01:14 PM gregcnc: you'll find the two boxes next week
01:14 PM roycroft: yes, i shall
01:14 PM roycroft: but in the meantime i'll have to go to target
01:14 PM roycroft: i'll bring an ipod and some good ear buds
01:15 PM cradek: I'd wash the dishes with shampoo before I'd go out to a store today
01:15 PM roycroft: play some soothing music
01:15 PM Tom_L: there are worse choices....
01:15 PM Tom_L: wally world for example
01:15 PM roycroft: and figure that a simple purchase is going to take an hour
01:15 PM roycroft: i don't shop there
01:15 PM Tom_L: :)
01:15 PM roycroft: it's right across the street from target though
01:16 PM roycroft: but i've never stepped foot in that store
01:16 PM roycroft: and there are other options for the detergent, but target is the best price, and the other options will be just as crazy
02:24 PM _unreal_: interesting laser setup http://forum.planet-cnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=726
02:24 PM CaptHindsight: is anyone filled with Christmas hooey?
02:30 PM _unreal_: what is hooey
02:34 PM roycroft: hooey malarkey
02:34 PM roycroft: balderdash
02:34 PM roycroft: drivel
02:34 PM roycroft: bunkum
02:34 PM roycroft: hooey is, rather
02:35 PM roycroft: poppycock
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: ho ho ho
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: I finally made it all the way through "Miracle on 34th Street" - 1947
02:40 PM roycroft: i haven't watched that in years
02:40 PM roycroft: tonight i'll be watching "white christmas"
02:40 PM roycroft: which is my family's tradition to watch
02:41 PM roycroft: nothing like some bing and danny
02:41 PM CaptHindsight: another xmas classic
02:41 PM roycroft: and the lovely rosemary clooney
02:41 PM CaptHindsight: i had seen all the others by age 10
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: multiple times but for some reason never 34th st all the way through
02:42 PM * roycroft had a childhood crush on rosemary clooney that he's not sure he ever totally got over
02:42 PM roycroft: i had a crush on 1954 rosemary clooney
02:43 PM roycroft: not the at the time contemporary rosemary clooney
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: i was struck how beautiful Maureen O'Hara was ...
02:44 PM roycroft: i think i should make the trek to target now, before it gets too late
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: and sad to see Natalie Wood in her first role on the big screen knowing how she would meet her demise
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: yeah have to make a run myself for some last minute groceries
02:45 PM * roycroft is not looking forward to this, but the later he waits the worse it will be
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: Clooney was always a joy to watch
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: wishes roycroft last minute success on detergents for xmas eve
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: godspeed
02:57 PM _unreal_: well time to head out for the @#$%@#$@# 3 hour tour bringing my daughter to her mother :( she gets her for xmass this year :(
03:10 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, maybe you should meet her halfway
03:22 PM roycroft: well that was not too bad
03:22 PM roycroft: thank you, governor brown!
03:23 PM roycroft: her pandemic restrictions only allow stores to operate at 1/2 customer capacity
03:23 PM roycroft: so there was a queue outside target, and for every person who left, a person could enter
03:24 PM roycroft: the queue was fairly short, as most folks were getting out or their car, noticing the queue, and then getting right back in and leaving
03:24 PM roycroft: so i stood outside for about 3 minutes, and when i got in the store was 1/2 empty
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: another festivus miracle!
04:02 PM unterhaus_: I think I found the winner of the faint text on white background competition, luthier edition
04:02 PM unterhaus_: https://violintools.com/product/the-alberti-c-clamp/?fbclid=IwAR2LOjdx_iAWgzvNSJnFqN6flKrVMrxrPiG62sFf-TdKyXBSGOaXScwl8ZE
04:05 PM unterhaus_: you only need 5 of those $60 clamps to glue on a guitar bridge
04:30 PM veegee: god damn I love this raymond reach truck
04:30 PM veegee: that joystick control is wonderful
04:31 PM veegee: I just wish it used proper servo valves instead of binary valves with variable speed pump since there's a lower limit to pump speed
04:31 PM net|: https://i.imgur.com/iCTj9z8.jpg
04:40 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: my running of the holiday gauntlet did not go as smoothly
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: old couple grabbed my bags at checkout since they took so long and the checker scanned mine before they had vacated the register area
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: then they came back the register as I was trying to pay to have their bags double bagged
04:42 PM CaptHindsight: but I fooled them, I ran out to my cars with bags in hand and left the parking area before they could block me again!
05:23 PM veegee: CaptHindsight I don't have a microwave at the workshop. I put some food in the fridge. Any tips for warming it up?
05:23 PM veegee: And no, setting it on fire with my oxy acetylene torch is not an option
05:23 PM veegee: I do have a cast iron pan though, just no stove
05:24 PM veegee: I have a regular propane torch but I feel like that's going to take forever
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: what food/s?
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: soup vs pizza would be different approaches
05:25 PM Tom_L: what's the easiest way to downgrade an install?
05:26 PM CaptHindsight: i have a few hotplates and induction coils
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: wrap in foil and place on car/truck engine
05:37 PM veegee: CaptHindsight LOL I <3 you
05:37 PM veegee: didn't even think of that
05:38 PM veegee: A burrito, chili, bread (that one is easy to toast with the propane torch)
05:47 PM JT-Cave: Tom_L, an install with apt?
05:48 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/chip-chute-01.jpg
05:48 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/
05:48 PM JT-Cave: got a lot done on my chip chute for the planer
05:51 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: easy I'm not into dudes :)
05:51 PM CaptHindsight: even on xmas
05:52 PM * JT-Cave can't even imagine the other side of that conversation... I love ignore
05:55 PM veegee: To be honest, I say I love you regardless of gender/species/type of object
05:55 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, yes but i figured it out
05:55 PM veegee: I love my girlfriend, I love my mom, I love my cat, I love my new reach forklift
05:56 PM JT-Cave: cool
05:56 PM veegee: I love the new lathe tooling I got
05:56 PM veegee: CXA quick change tool post and a full set of carbide insert tooling
05:56 PM JT-Cave: got a lot done with my planer chip chute today
05:56 PM Tom_L: adding a chip chute ehh
05:56 PM veegee: I love my 8" helical cutter jointer
05:56 PM Tom_L: i reverted back to 2.7 for now
05:56 PM JT-Cave: it had a plastic one and the top was broken and it went out the back so the hose was always in the way
05:56 PM veegee: Although I would have loved the 12" model more, but it was twice the cost :(
05:56 PM JT-Cave: on your mill?
05:57 PM Tom_L: yes
05:57 PM JT-Cave: still having issues with the config?
05:57 PM Tom_L: nothing wrong with 2.8 but nothing for me to gain
05:57 PM Tom_L: no it works
05:57 PM Tom_L: there were 2 ini settings i could tweak that i didn't add in 2.8 but it worked
05:58 PM Tom_L: i wanted to know how to revert mostly
05:59 PM JT-Cave: I think it's pretty easy IIRC
05:59 PM Tom_L: if that makes sense :)
05:59 PM Tom_L: it was but i'd never tried it
05:59 PM Tom_L: doing is better for me to remember than reading
06:00 PM Tom_L: what ga is that chute?
06:01 PM JT-Cave: 14 gauge, easy enough to bend and shape
06:01 PM JT-Cave: and welds good too
06:01 PM Tom_L: catia could make that remaining shape and unwrap it to a flat pattern for ya :)
06:02 PM JT-Cave: if it was all straight and true...
06:02 PM Tom_L: didn't click on the last few pics yet... i see now you got it
06:02 PM JT-Cave: a bit of grind here bend there to make it fit and some hammer work
06:03 PM JT-Cave: and some clamps to hold it in place while I TIG welded
06:05 PM JT-Cave: an English Wheel would have been nice to have
06:06 PM Tom_L: yeah
06:06 PM Tom_L: body shop iron works
06:07 PM Tom_L: that's about all i have in the way of sheet tools beside a couple snips
06:07 PM JT-Cave: I think I'll wait for Saturday or Sunday to take the door panel off the uplander to replace the mirror be a bit warmer
06:08 PM JT-Cave: I have and used today an old craftsman body hammer and dolly
06:09 PM JT-Cave: I used the vertical bandsaw and a hammer and the angle grinder mostly
06:10 PM JT-Cave: the last parts for the planer rebuild should be here Monday...
06:11 PM Tom_L: what are you still waiting for?
06:11 PM JT-Cave: the gearbox gasket, a chain, the v belt set
06:12 PM JT-Cave: December 23, 2020
06:12 PM JT-Cave: In Transit, Arriving On Time
06:12 PM JT-Cave: Your package is moving within the USPS network and is on track to be delivered by the expected delivery date. It is currently in transit to the next facility.
06:12 PM JT-Cave: that's all it says every day lol
06:13 PM Tom_L: yeah i've heard that before...
06:13 PM JT-Cave: ain't holding my breath for sure
06:13 PM Tom_L: ups used to ding the doorbell, now they just drop and run like fedex
06:13 PM JT-Cave: lol
06:14 PM JT-Cave: fedex delivered the new mirror for the uplander today
06:14 PM JT-Cave: I've had usps pitch a package out the window lol
06:14 PM Tom_L: what gets me is fedex will go by sometimes 3-4 times while they're in the neighborhood
06:15 PM Tom_L: makes no sense to me
06:15 PM pcw_home: We had a Fedex shipment from Digikey 2 weeks ago that got stuck in San Leandro (about 30 miles from here) for 10 days
06:15 PM JT-Cave: fedex has multiple delivery trucks, next day air, normal
06:15 PM Tom_L: for a while i had a usps worker that would not get out of his vehicle. if he couldn't reach the box, he wouldn't deliver it
06:16 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, no this is the same guy
06:16 PM JT-Cave: damn
06:16 PM JT-Cave: odd
06:16 PM pcw_home: we gave up trying to get them to deliver it and had digikey re-ship
06:16 PM Tom_L: i think he's no longer with them
06:16 PM Tom_L: unless he's delivering packages in syberia somewhere
06:16 PM JT-Cave: fedex is usually pretty good here
06:16 PM JT-Cave: lol
06:17 PM Tom_L: yeah fedex is spot on here so far
06:17 PM pcw_home: Fedex has been the worst for losing packages for indeterminate periods
06:17 PM Tom_L: ups was a day early on 2 recent packages
06:18 PM JT-Cave: 9 of 12 pullets have their head under their wings...
06:18 PM pcw_home: We had that 15K package to Portugal lost for 5 months
06:18 PM pcw_home: lost in Memphis
06:18 PM JT-Cave: that's bad
06:18 PM CaptHindsight: pcw_home: what size box? roughly
06:19 PM CaptHindsight: pcw_home: did it eventually turn up?
06:19 PM pcw_home: probably 26x26x26
06:19 PM CaptHindsight: oh so not tiny
06:19 PM pcw_home: yes 5 months a a million phone calls later
06:20 PM JT-Cave: I gotta say the local usps was a big help getting a couple of stalled packages moving, she even said she saw a photo of them
06:20 PM pcw_home: Digikey was great, they asked Fedex to return the stuck package and sent a new shipment overnight
06:20 PM CaptHindsight: I fully insure all international shipments now with 0 deductible
06:20 PM CaptHindsight: oh nice
06:21 PM pcw_home: Digikey has a lot of clout with shippers
06:21 PM JT-Cave: nice
06:21 PM JT-Cave: chow time here
06:21 PM CaptHindsight: USPS, fedex, UPS, DHL, Royal mail...if they lose something now, it just takes forever
06:22 PM pcw_home: Yeah
06:22 PM CaptHindsight: lose = misplace for even a few days
06:22 PM CaptHindsight: I hate when the tracking gets stuck even for a few days, it tends to not end well
06:22 PM CaptHindsight: sometimes it makes it to the end customers
06:23 PM CaptHindsight: sometimes it comes back with no clear reason after 2 months
06:23 PM pcw_home: The worst on local delivery has got to be Amazon, they always leave stuff outside
06:24 PM CaptHindsight: Roayl mail refused to deliver a package to a factory in England that has ben there for near 200 years
06:24 PM CaptHindsight: Royal
06:24 PM pcw_home: the pandemic has made international USPS much worse
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: hah, we were getting free stuff from Amazon, I'd get a box at the door, not our names, I'd call customer service and they would say to just keep it
06:25 PM pcw_home: much of international USPS freight was carried on commercial flights
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, ours started moving by ship
06:26 PM CaptHindsight: 7-10 days turned into 7-10 weeks
06:27 PM pcw_home: Well I guess I should not be bitching, Its Christmas Eve and other then the COVID thing we have had a great year
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: most customers were let down but understanding
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: ho ho ho
06:27 PM roycroft: it's not been a great year for me
06:27 PM roycroft: but it's the end of the year and i'm still alive and still working
06:27 PM roycroft: so i'm a lot better off than a lot of folks
06:28 PM pcw_home: I guess a lot of our customers are people that work from home so a good year
06:29 PM roycroft: all in all i can't complain that much, except for the fact that, sadly, president awol is trying his hardest to make the end of the year as horrible as possible for all americans
06:29 PM pcw_home: We have been very lucky (health wise also)
06:29 PM roycroft: i had a knee injury, but no deadly virus infection
06:30 PM roycroft: so again, not the greatest, but still much better than it could have been
06:30 PM pcw_home: well at least that particular Reality Show is ending
06:30 PM roycroft: it's changing, not ending
06:30 PM roycroft: but it should not have as much influence as it does not
06:30 PM roycroft: it may be possible to tune it out, at least somewhat
06:31 PM CaptHindsight: I don't even think about it, we had serious health issues in the house starting in 2019
06:31 PM CaptHindsight: just think now and ahead
06:33 PM CaptHindsight: could be worse for most here
06:33 PM CaptHindsight: hope 2021 is better
06:34 PM roycroft: 2021 could not be much worse
06:34 PM roycroft: but i believe that life is, to a great degree, what one makes of it
06:34 PM CaptHindsight: no high hopes for a few more weks anyway :P
06:34 PM roycroft: and i'm still optimistic
06:34 PM roycroft: i'm going to try to make 2021 a better year
06:34 PM roycroft: for me and those around me
06:35 PM roycroft: and as far as this year goes
06:35 PM roycroft: had it not been for the pandemic and everything shutting down i'd not have had the time to build that workbench last summer
06:35 PM roycroft: so i made the best of that bad situation, and i'm happy about that
06:38 PM roycroft: for those of you who have had a great year, i'm very happy for you
06:40 PM CaptHindsight: time to check Santa on Norad radar
06:40 PM roycroft: santa?
06:41 PM roycroft: do you mean SATAN!?
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.noradsanta.org/
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: Satan is down the hall from me :)
06:42 PM CaptHindsight: hall / street
06:48 PM veegee: CaptHindsight the battery came with a single point watering system. Well, at least the hoses that are connected to the cells. Didn't come with the hand pump. According to this video, you squeeze until it feels "tight": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thJpsTQjBcI
06:48 PM veegee: How does the auto shutoff work?
06:48 PM veegee: Does it make sure all cells are filled to the same level even if they were initially at different electrolyte levels?
06:50 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: after 6 here, brain is on shelf
06:50 PM veegee: Lucky. Mine is always on shelf
06:51 PM veegee: No one even bothered to give it a quick dusting
06:51 PM CaptHindsight: pondering what to make to consume next
06:52 PM roycroft: i'm still dealing with my hopelessly confused gitlab server
06:53 PM roycroft: i'm having second thoughts about using gitlab
07:00 PM veegee: roycroft we use it in production for years
07:00 PM veegee: It's never caused any trouble. I've been using it since the early days right up to the latest version.
07:01 PM veegee: roycroft what kind of trouble is it giving you? I think I can help you fix it
07:13 PM roycroft: it may not be a gitlab thing, actually
07:13 PM roycroft: here's the deal
07:13 PM roycroft: i set the machine up in local address space with the hostname gitlab.domain.com
07:14 PM roycroft: since it's in private address space i could not use letsencrypt for the certificates, beause it's too difficult to renew them
07:15 PM roycroft: i had quite some time ago set up my own CA, and added the CA root to all my workstations, so i could generate certificates and sign them with that and not have any issues with self-signed certs and the like
07:15 PM roycroft: so all that was working fine, but then i decided to rename the machine from gitlab.domain.com to gitlab.domain.net, as i may be selling domain.com
07:15 PM roycroft: the renaming seemed to go fine
07:16 PM roycroft: i generated and installed certs for gitlab.domain.net
07:16 PM roycroft: my windows and linux machines were happy with that
07:16 PM roycroft: my macs now refuse to talk to it
07:16 PM roycroft: i get a "connection reset" error immediately upon connectiong
07:16 PM XXCoder: snobs
07:17 PM roycroft: but it's the the macs that are resetting, not the gitlab server
07:17 PM roycroft: i fought with this for two weeks
07:17 PM roycroft: i finally decided to resign myself to naming it gitlab.domain.com again
07:17 PM roycroft: and to build a whole new gitlab.domain.net, and then mirror the .com machine to the .net machine
07:17 PM roycroft: so i did that
07:18 PM roycroft: now the linux and windows machines happily talk to gitlab.domain.com
07:18 PM roycroft: but the macs still refuse
07:18 PM roycroft: and i've tried multiple browsers
07:18 PM roycroft: it's not a browser-specific problem
07:18 PM roycroft: it's not a dns problem
07:19 PM roycroft: i can ssh to gitlab.domain.com fine from the macs
07:19 PM roycroft: if i log into a linux machine and get a cloning link from the gitlab server, i can git clone on the macs
07:19 PM roycroft: i just cannot connect to the web interface from the macs
07:19 PM roycroft: and that web interface is my primary reason for having a gitlab server
07:20 PM roycroft: gitlab is serious overkill for my needs, but it's the only open-source git product that lets me organize projects into groups, create them and search them from a web interface
07:21 PM roycroft: one time, firefox developer in debug mode popped up a message the effect that the serial number of gitlab.domain.net is already in use by gitlab.domain.com
07:22 PM roycroft: i unfortunately did not document the exact message at the time, and i've not been able to replicate it
07:22 PM roycroft: so if you have any ideas, i'd love to hear them
07:22 PM roycroft: but i think the real problem is that my macs are hopelessly confused
07:23 PM roycroft: and that my reverting to the old hostname did not work out well
07:24 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about going back to just running git in daemon mode, and not having the nice web interface
07:24 PM roycroft: i could probably organize the projects in a database or even just a spreadsheet that keeps track of the urls for cloning
07:25 PM roycroft: the issue there is that i use git lfs, and need to, because the majority of the files i keep in the repositories are cad drawings and the like
07:25 PM roycroft: and gitlab isn't exporting the lfs-file changes when i mirror
07:26 PM roycroft: only the most recent version, which is actually how lfs is designed to work
07:26 PM roycroft: but if i'm going to migrate to a different repository platform, i want all the history to migrate
07:28 PM roycroft: to give you an idea of the scope of this, i have several hundred projects, roughly 400, with between roughly 1 and 50 files per project
07:28 PM roycroft: some have only a revision or two
07:28 PM roycroft: some have dozens of revisions
07:28 PM roycroft: a few probably over 100 revisions
07:29 PM roycroft: if i can't mirror it all, i'll have to clone one repository at a time, revision by revision, and then push it all to the new server
07:29 PM roycroft: that will take months and months of dedicated work
07:29 PM roycroft: so i don't want to do it that way
07:30 PM Tom_L: http://www.carbidedepot.com/resources.htm
07:31 PM Tom_L: good one stop shopping data resource
07:32 PM _unreal_: heh waiting ques for stores for the fake pandemic
07:32 PM _unreal_: ya we dont have any BS going on in FL
07:32 PM roycroft: stop it, _unreal_
07:32 PM Tom_L: let's just let it go
07:32 PM Tom_L: mkay?
07:33 PM Tom_L: everyone has an opinion
07:33 PM Tom_L: if i wanted yours, i'd ask
07:33 PM CaptHindsight: and Santa can you please get him a brand new brain
07:33 PM roycroft: the pandemic is not an opinion
07:34 PM roycroft: it is an irrefutable fact
07:34 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, i'd settle for used
07:34 PM Tom_L: good ppl have left here due to crap like this
07:35 PM roycroft: i don't want to argue about it
07:35 PM roycroft: i want people to stop with the bullshit about it
07:35 PM Tom_L: i don't really think it needs to be discussed here at all
07:36 PM Tom_L: certainly not OT
07:36 PM roycroft: what i really want is for my gitlab server and my macs to get along and live in harmony
07:37 PM Tom_L: anyway, that site had the exact thread data i was after
07:38 PM Tom_L: worth bookmarking
07:38 PM pfred1: worth saving there's no guarantee it'll be there tomorrow
07:39 PM Tom_L: already did
07:39 PM roycroft: well this jst connector set just arrived
07:39 PM roycroft: it was supposed to both male and female cable connector
07:39 PM XXCoder: roycroft: i have him on ignore because he adds nothing
07:39 PM XXCoder: i recommand you do same
07:39 PM roycroft: but it has male pcb mount connectors and female cable connectors
07:40 PM roycroft: xxcoder: i try not to use /ignore if i can help it
07:40 PM XXCoder: me too
07:40 PM roycroft: and there are times when i think i can help with his issues with his printer
07:41 PM XXCoder: unreal has a printer? interesting
07:41 PM Tom_L: as an op for a few decades, i run a tight ship but i'm no op here
07:41 PM roycroft: but it may be best for the channel if i use /ignore in this case, because i have a hard time ignoring certain things
07:41 PM pfred1: that's what the ignore command is for
07:41 PM roycroft: he has a project
07:41 PM roycroft: that resembles a printer
07:41 PM roycroft: or router
07:41 PM roycroft: or something
07:42 PM _unreal_: freaking hell that fucked with my head
07:42 PM roycroft: i am not totally sure
07:42 PM _unreal_: so I have these BLDC drivers
07:42 PM XXCoder: oh in know he worked on micro machine
07:42 PM _unreal_: that I purchased from china
07:42 PM roycroft: so this connector kit doesn't do me a lot of good
07:42 PM _unreal_: I have YET to do a damn thing with them
07:42 PM roycroft: it can help me confirm that i have the right type of connectors
07:42 PM _unreal_: well I just picked one up and it has some kind of a liquid under it
07:42 PM roycroft: and will let me test my d-sup crimp tools to see if they are suitable
07:43 PM _unreal_: I was saying OH SHIT dont tell me they put those BS salt water caps in it
07:43 PM roycroft: but i'll need to order some different connectors to complete my projet
07:43 PM _unreal_: I think its the 3-in-one oil can is leaking
07:43 PM pfred1: good luck getting them
07:44 PM pfred1: I finally got some things I ordered on the 11th of November yesterday
07:46 PM roycroft: so they are the correct type of connectors
07:47 PM roycroft: it's a confusing kit though
07:48 PM roycroft: the pcb mount components are the male connectors, and they have the pins already installed
07:48 PM roycroft: the cable connectors are all female, and do not have the pins installed
07:49 PM roycroft: which makes sense, because the pcb mount ones get soldered in, while the cable ones need to have the wires crimped onot the pins before the pins are installed
07:49 PM roycroft: so one would think the kit would just have a bunch of femail pins
07:49 PM roycroft: but it has an equal amount of male and female pins
07:49 PM roycroft: i've no idea what i would ever do with the male pins
07:51 PM _unreal_: that was random my sister just called
07:53 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/tips/
07:56 PM _unreal_: found it, https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/24V-200W-3-phase-bldc-motor_60669776319.html?spm=a2756.order-detail-ta-ta-b.0.0.26ee2fc2ukEyJ4
07:56 PM _unreal_: ok so I have 3 of these
08:00 PM _unreal_: I'm thinking about getting a fan like this that uses those controllers
08:00 PM _unreal_: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/13kpa-air-pressure-and-vacuum-air_60655548498.html?spm=a2700.wholesale.deiletai6.5.1bed28ceIP8pb0
08:00 PM _unreal_: I have a metal drum that is like 2' diam and 4' tall
08:01 PM _unreal_: so my thinking is to turn it into a cyclone for the cnc mill
09:51 PM _unreal_: not much for laser modules on amazon
