02:35 AM Deejay: moin
02:38 AM bjorkintosh: moin moin
02:38 AM XXCoder: yo
03:12 AM mrec: bjorkintosh: I installed oversized fans rated at a higher voltage etc. and I'm running them at a lower speed. In the end the air blowing through it is similar
03:12 AM mrec: eg. the fan of the powersupply was just small doing a lot work ... I cut a hole for a 120x120 fan into it and removed the small one
05:05 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:49 AM Tom_L: morning
05:49 AM XXCoder: heys
05:50 AM Tom_L: wheezy upgrade doesn't look all that doable
05:53 AM XXCoder: someone recreated all c64 buttons lol
05:53 AM XXCoder: pretty amazing, all symbols is indentions so can fill it with epoxy or something
06:34 AM JT-Cave: IIRC I had to modify the depends for master on wheezy
07:00 AM enleth: would you consider electroplating to be a viable way to recondition a worn spline shaft on a spindle?
08:03 AM gregcnc: only if you can grind the profile back to spec
08:05 AM rs[m]: enleth: if you try it be sure to report your results. i reconditioned a shaft in a gear pump by electroplating, with mixed results.
08:06 AM gregcnc: even then, I don't think plating is a common repair method
08:06 AM rs[m]: in my case, it was more a repair of the metal on metal seal
08:07 AM gregcnc: shaft repair is common
08:07 AM rs[m]: (high precision dosing pump for hazardous materials)
08:08 AM rs[m]: the fluid would leak through the fixed shaft of the non-driven gear to the low-pressure side
08:09 AM rs[m]: and deposit filling material between gear and shaft
08:09 AM rs[m]: (filling material = particles with µm-sizes suspended in fluid)
08:10 AM rs[m]: i guess i managed to deposit a few µm if at all
08:16 AM JT-Cave: got more done on the planer yesterday https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/
09:39 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, did you take notes on it?
09:42 AM JT-Cave: on sneezy?
09:45 AM Tom_L: yeah
09:49 AM Tom_L: i didn't get very far. i tried updating from 2.7 to 2.8 then i tried building from source
09:49 AM Tom_L: i think backports moved so i tried to update that
09:50 AM Tom_L: needs amongst other things a readline lib
09:50 AM Tom_L: then i was getting a boost::python error
09:56 AM Tom_L: looks like the blade fits
10:00 AM JT-Cave: gotta shim up the planer from the stand, can't lower the infeed and outfeed rollers enough to get them level with the planer bed
10:01 AM Tom_L: is the blade a smaller diameter?
10:10 AM JT-Cave: no
10:11 AM Tom_L: what changed?
10:18 AM JT-Shop: I'm not sure I ever had it lined up correctly, just taking my time with the rebuild and making sure everything is as perfect as possible
10:43 AM Tom_L: if i'm building for RTAI i don't use the ./configure uspace option do i?
10:43 AM Tom_L: i think that's for preempt-rt?
10:47 AM Tom_L: so aparently it won't build with that RTAI kernel
10:48 AM Tom_shop: your kernel 'kernel-3.4.9-rtai-686-pae' is not known. There might be needed dependencies which won't get set automatically.
11:11 AM JT-Cave: the kernels might be out of date
11:11 AM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/getting-started/getting-linuxcnc.html
11:11 AM JT-Cave: not sure what the current one is for rtai
11:11 AM Tom_L: i was just looking at that
11:11 AM Tom_L: dunno if those are accurate or not
11:11 AM Tom_L: under RTAI kernels
11:12 AM Tom_L: just over halfway down
11:13 AM Tom_L: no iso was ever built for jessie.
11:14 AM Tom_L: (debian 8)
11:14 AM Tom_L: wheezy is 7
11:14 AM Tom_L: and rtai was dropped after wheezy until recent attempts
11:25 AM _unreal: ok just solved my limit switch issue
11:26 AM _unreal: one of my ground leads had pulled out just slightly so my lines were picking up EMI and causing the false limit triggering
11:26 AM _unreal: and as one would expect I also broke one of the connectors so I have to swap that #$%@#$% out now
11:26 AM _unreal: stupid litle JST retainer clip broke off
11:26 AM _unreal: oh well
11:27 AM _unreal: I believe i was already " damaged " I just did the nail in the coffin thing
11:27 AM _unreal: you know
11:27 AM _unreal: but now I'm not getting feed back
11:27 AM _unreal: before I was getting like .7v feed bback
11:27 AM _unreal: I'm stil getting a bi
11:28 AM _unreal: bit of feed back on Y??? I'm assuming its because I have the wire coiled up under the machine body
11:32 AM _unreal: AAAHHAAAAAAA one more wire was loose
11:32 AM _unreal: now all of my signal issues are cleaned up
11:33 AM t4nk_freenode: good morning ;)
11:35 AM Tom_L: _unreal, you should hire an electrician
11:36 AM _unreal: these are issues from swapping controllers
11:37 AM t4nk_freenode: hehe
11:37 AM t4nk_freenode: an electrician
11:37 AM t4nk_freenode: a computer programmer
11:37 AM t4nk_freenode: a language docent ;)
11:38 AM t4nk_freenode: a cnc expert
11:38 AM t4nk_freenode: a doctor
11:38 AM t4nk_freenode: and a maid
11:41 AM _unreal: ya that about sums me up
11:42 AM t4nk_freenode: it is striking though man,.. it happens 'quiet' a bit that you have something dangling from your machine
11:44 AM t4nk_freenode: I got the casing for my second psu cut and about fitting
11:45 AM t4nk_freenode: but it's been sitting there for a few days; can't be bothered with finishing it
11:53 AM _unreal: Tom_L, you live still?
11:53 AM _unreal: trying to get spindle enable working?
11:53 AM _unreal: I am not getting a +5v on output 0
11:53 AM _unreal: dont know why?
11:54 AM rs[m]: it's always the ground leads
11:54 AM _unreal: ?
11:54 AM _unreal: I dont follow?
11:54 AM rs[m]: just catching up
11:54 AM _unreal: I have input common tied to ground because of how the limit switches are setup
11:55 AM _unreal: is there a similar setup for the OUTPUT? on p3 of the 7i96
11:55 AM rs[m]: just ignore what i said
11:55 AM _unreal: copy that :)
11:55 AM rs[m]: and carry on ;)
11:55 AM _unreal: I have output 00 setup as output SSR
11:55 AM _unreal: non inverted and my +5v lead tied to pin ...
11:56 AM _unreal: OUT 00+
11:56 AM _unreal: ...
11:56 AM _unreal: I DO... have the negative lead tied too 7i96 regular ground....
11:57 AM _unreal: though I dought that would keep pin 0+ from going +5v right now m3, m4, m5 isnt adjusting any of the outputs
11:57 AM _unreal: not sure why
11:59 AM _unreal: all of my limit switch inputs a re wrking just fine
12:00 PM _unreal: ?
12:17 PM Tom_L: spindle enable signal comes on when the spindle is turning
12:18 PM Tom_L: and it might be /enable instead of enable... i can't recall
12:19 PM _unreal: ?
12:19 PM _unreal: enable instead of enable?
12:19 PM _unreal: HEHE
12:19 PM Tom_L: pay attention
12:19 PM _unreal: you have a slash I see that but I dont know what that means
12:19 PM Tom_L: negative logic
12:19 PM _unreal: tyically I should be able to m3
12:21 PM Tom_L: net emcmot.00.enable => hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.stepgen.00.enable
12:22 PM Tom_L: no that's for the steppers...
12:23 PM Tom_L: net pwm_enable_out motion.spindle-on => pid.0.enable hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.pwmgen.00.enable hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.gpio.018.out
12:23 PM Tom_L: setp hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.gpio.018.is_output 1
12:23 PM Tom_L: setp hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.gpio.018.invert_output 1
12:24 PM Tom_L: you might need to invert the pin
12:24 PM _unreal: settings?
12:24 PM _unreal: or wiring?
12:25 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/drivers/hostmot2.html
12:25 PM Tom_L: i just posted the answer
12:25 PM _unreal: the outputs have both + and- for the 00 11 22 33 44 55
12:25 PM Tom_L: oh those are isolated outputs
12:25 PM Tom_L: so
12:25 PM Tom_L: optos?
12:26 PM _unreal: 7i96
12:26 PM _unreal: and it has buffers or what ever on those pins
12:26 PM _unreal: likely optos?
12:26 PM Tom_L: if i'm not mistaken if you want a + active you would tie the + to 5v and use the - as the output signal
12:26 PM Tom_L: so when the transistor saturates it will go high
12:26 PM _unreal: I dont know the make up regaredless it has + and neg state outputs
12:26 PM Tom_L: read the mesa docs it will tell you
12:27 PM Tom_L: don't just take someone's word for it
12:27 PM _unreal: thats wha I've been looking at
12:27 PM Tom_L: i did homework all thru school. i'm not doing any more :)
12:27 PM _unreal: just like the inputs through me for a loop with the needing to tie the common to +v or - to set the mode
12:27 PM Tom_L: similar yes
12:28 PM Tom_L: make sure they're optos
12:40 PM _unreal: ISOLATED OUTPUT CHARACTERISTICS
12:40 PM _unreal: I think I found the answer
12:40 PM _unreal: so I guess all inputs and OUTPUTS are tied together with the single COMMON IN
12:41 PM t4nk_freenode: yes, everything needs to be connected into a big ball
12:41 PM t4nk_freenode: then lubed decently
12:41 PM _unreal: so I guess I need to tie the +5v side of my external 10amp SSR to 5v source and tie the ground to the - 00 output
12:41 PM t4nk_freenode: and fed no less than 224Amps
12:41 PM t4nk_freenode: that's the only way to get that .7V
12:41 PM t4nk_freenode: because
12:42 PM t4nk_freenode: you see
12:43 PM t4nk_freenode: 224/.7=320
12:43 PM t4nk_freenode: I had to double check that
12:45 PM t4nk_freenode: but keep in mind this goes only if you plan to always move all axes simultaneously
12:46 PM Tom_L: _unreal, for the enable?
12:46 PM Tom_L: _unreal, is the enable active hi or active low?
12:48 PM _unreal: I cant switch invert it gives me errors
12:48 PM _unreal: if I clikc invert on outout 00
12:49 PM _unreal: right now I just switched my wiring so my +5v wire on my 10amp SSR is tied to a 5v source. and my ground is tied to -00
12:49 PM _unreal: and I dont see any action
12:49 PM _unreal: on the other hand I may have a bad solid state relay :S
12:49 PM Tom_L: is -00 an opto?
12:49 PM _unreal: according to the pdf its a mosfet
12:49 PM Tom_L: no clue what you're doing
12:50 PM _unreal: all inputs and outputs are mosfets
12:50 PM Tom_L: right but they're opto isolated
12:50 PM Tom_L: now
12:50 PM _unreal: I'm trying to get the OUTPUT on my 7i96 to flip on a relay
12:50 PM Tom_L: is your enable active high or active low?
12:50 PM _unreal: active high I believe
12:50 PM Tom_L: you'd better have a diode across the relay
12:50 PM _unreal: if I try to use invert it gives me an error
12:50 PM _unreal: ITS AN SSR
12:51 PM _unreal: its not a machanical diode
12:51 PM Tom_L: so you've mentioned relays enable and ssr.... i'm confused
12:51 PM _unreal: err relay
12:51 PM Tom_L: ok
12:51 PM Tom_L: and you want active high for the enable?
12:51 PM _unreal: said that multi times my relay is an SSR 10amp
12:51 PM Tom_L: from -00
12:51 PM Tom_L: so
12:51 PM Tom_L: -00 has a + and a - right
12:51 PM _unreal: I dont care if I use +v or - side
12:51 PM _unreal: of the 00
12:51 PM _unreal: or any of the outputs
12:52 PM _unreal: regardless M3/m4 does not seem to be changing the state of the outputs
12:52 PM _unreal: and 00 in the PNCONFIG is set to spindle enable
12:52 PM _unreal: maybe I should switch it to spindle FWD?
12:53 PM Tom_L: no
12:53 PM _unreal: I believe my issue right now has to do with the INPUTS and outputs are all tied function wise to the common IN
12:53 PM _unreal: pin
12:53 PM _unreal: and the common IN is tied to ground
12:54 PM _unreal: so I believe that menas I have to use the - side's of the outputs
12:54 PM _unreal: I also believe my SSR may be failed?
12:55 PM _unreal: because I have a small light plugged into the outlet
12:55 PM _unreal: for testing and the LED is half lit up
12:55 PM roycroft: ssrs tend to fail closed
12:55 PM roycroft: which is what makes them dangerous
12:55 PM _unreal: one of those 110v led strip lights
12:55 PM _unreal: roycroft, no argument
12:56 PM roycroft: and why i always put a contactor in front of the load side of an ssr
12:56 PM _unreal: this relay is for driving my coolent pump for the spindle
12:56 PM _unreal: I have other SSR's but they are 10x bigger in size :S
12:56 PM _unreal: well 2x
12:56 PM _unreal: and rated for like 40 amps
12:56 PM _unreal: heh
12:57 PM roycroft: i only mention this because you said you think you may have a failed ssr
12:57 PM _unreal: ya I'm thinking my SSR is failed
12:57 PM _unreal: well I think I'm done for today....
12:57 PM _unreal: I need to get some stuff around the house done
12:57 PM _unreal: Ineed to finish cleaning up so I can bring the machine to work tomorrow
12:57 PM roycroft: if you're not seeing voltage across the load side when you expect it it's as likely some other component has failed vs. the ssr
12:58 PM roycroft: if you're seeing voltage across the load side when you don't expect to there's a good chance it's the ssr that has failed
12:58 PM roycroft: although they tend to leak a small amount of voltage even when they're working properly
12:59 PM roycroft: which is another reason to protect the load side with a contactor
01:00 PM * roycroft is getting tired of dealing with qcad already, and mayjust go back to using autocad in a windows vm for his 2d stuff
01:00 PM _unreal: ya I thinking of seeing if I have a reg. relay
01:01 PM Tom_L: put a diode across the input
01:01 PM Tom_L: if you do
01:01 PM _unreal: BUT I'm a little lost as to how to wire it up
01:01 PM _unreal: well I'll be back later on
01:01 PM Tom_L: i was trying to explain it
01:01 PM _unreal: need to get some stuff around the house done
01:01 PM roycroft: it's not raining today
01:02 PM Tom_L: yeah, it's snowing
01:02 PM roycroft: and i have a couple projects that require sheet goods - it would be a good day to go get the materials
01:02 PM Tom_L: well, not now
01:02 PM roycroft: but i need to finish up some drawings first to be sure i get the correct materials
01:03 PM roycroft: btw, steal of the day
01:03 PM roycroft: i'm running low on 11x17 paper, and i like to use 28lb paper for shop drawings
01:04 PM Tom_L: velum
01:04 PM roycroft: i went to officedepot.com to check on some, and found some 500 sheet reams on clearance for $8.94/ream
01:04 PM roycroft: reams of 28lb are usually about $35
01:04 PM roycroft: i was going to order one ream, which will probably last me a yeaer
01:04 PM Tom_L: err vellum
01:04 PM roycroft: but i ordered 4 :)
01:06 PM roycroft: anyway, if anyone uses ledger size paper in a laser printer, go grab some of that while it's still around
01:06 PM roycroft: er, tabloid size
01:06 PM Tom_L: naw i'm a tree hugger :)\
01:08 PM roycroft: that a ream of paper lasts me a year kind of indicates that i'm conservative with my printing
01:09 PM Tom_L: i used to have a plotter but not now
01:09 PM roycroft: i still have one
01:09 PM roycroft: i'm going to sell it
01:09 PM roycroft: i very rarely use it
01:11 PM roycroft: and having just complained about qcad, i can say this for it - it has a nice feature where it can split drawings up onto multiple sheets and automatically add alignment crosshairs to each sheet for printing large drawings, eliminating the need for a plotter in many cases
01:12 PM roycroft: unfortuantely it messes up importing my dwg files from autocad, skewing the title block and misaligning the viewport in it's concept of paper space
01:29 PM JT-Shop: got the spacers for the planer done... in the oven flashing off before powder coat
01:30 PM JT-Shop: I have a D size roll feed plotter and need to give it a new zip code
01:37 PM Tom_L: i got mine from boeing surplus when that was a thing here
02:05 PM _unreal: snowing hehe
02:05 PM _unreal: my daughter and I have been out side cleaning the car
02:05 PM _unreal: its like 78f out
02:05 PM _unreal: :)
02:05 PM _unreal: speaking of I need to go t the gas station to get some gas so I can mow the law
02:05 PM _unreal: lawn
02:06 PM unreal is now known as Guest33225
02:07 PM JT-Shop: dunno what kind of oak that is but it's sure hard to split... real stringy in the center
02:29 PM _unreal: ok I'm having an odd issue?
02:29 PM * JT-Shop wonders what to do with a 15" straight knife cutting head???
02:29 PM _unreal: I'm not sure what I did BUT? I'm getting an error on xz
02:29 PM _unreal: x
02:29 PM _unreal: ?
02:29 PM _unreal: if I try to press the - y or x buttons in probe basic they do nothing
02:29 PM _unreal: if I g0x0 I get an error
02:30 PM _unreal: I can press +x and mov e the x axis
02:30 PM roycroft: sweet - i've been holding off on pulling the trigger on a mag switch for my bandsaw upgrade, wanting to find a better deal than $100, but i ran out of time, as i'm starting the project today
02:30 PM roycroft: so i went to order one, and decided to check on ebay one more time before doing so, and found one for $44
02:31 PM roycroft: needless to say, that one is now on order :)
02:33 PM rs[m]: _unreal: your issues are _unreal
02:34 PM _unreal: if I press - noting
02:34 PM _unreal: if I g0x0 I get
02:34 PM rs[m]: just a slight hint, it might help to mention what kind of error "an error" is. without any guarantees.
02:34 PM roycroft: rs[m]: i suspect that florida suffers from an excess of entropy
02:34 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, mag switch?
02:35 PM _unreal: 3 errors
02:35 PM _unreal: invalid params in linear command
02:35 PM rs[m]: too many unknown unknowns ;)
02:35 PM _unreal: linear move on lin 0 would exceed joins 1"S NEGATIVE LIMIT ?????
02:35 PM _unreal: AND
02:35 PM roycroft: yes, a magnetic switch with thermal overload protection, and which won't turn on automatically after a power failure
02:35 PM t4nk_freenode: nah, rs[m] .. I read on goggle that there was a TUTORIAL for _unreal's problem's error
02:35 PM _unreal: LINEAR MOVE ON LINE 0 WOULD EXCEED Y'S NEGATIVE LIMIT
02:36 PM _unreal: I'm guessing there is an error in the config? but I see nothing wrong in pnconfig
02:36 PM _unreal: unless there is a ghost setting that its not removing/adjusting?
02:36 PM rs[m]: _unreal: if you would have to risk a guess, what would "linear move would exceed y's negative limit" mean
02:36 PM JT-Shop: oh a starter with overloads
02:36 PM roycroft: it's not essential, but i'm upgrading the bandsaw motor from 3/4hp to 2hp, and while i like mag switches in general, i'm pretty insistent on using them on devices with a motor >1hp
02:36 PM roycroft: yes
02:36 PM roycroft: a latching contactor
02:37 PM JT-Shop: yea over 1hp overloads are good to have
02:37 PM _unreal: I dont understand why its listing 2 axis
02:37 PM roycroft: the one i ordered is for a 3hp motor, but i already have an overload module for 2hp
02:37 PM roycroft: same brand - teco
02:38 PM roycroft: i stick with teco so that i can stock spares that work with any of them
02:38 PM JT-Shop: makes sense
02:38 PM roycroft: plus, teco are very reliable
02:38 PM rs[m]: _unreal: what is "it" - pncconf? probebasic? axis?
02:39 PM _unreal: pnconfig defaults to putting axis
02:39 PM _unreal: thats just a quick edit for probe_basic
02:39 PM _unreal: but I'm getting join issues?
02:39 PM roycroft: i've been looking for a deal on one of these for months
02:39 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/
02:39 PM _unreal: oh odd just changed back to axis and its failing to load with a mist I/O not defined? wtf
02:40 PM roycroft: odd that day i ran out of time and was willing to pay full price i stumbled on a good deal
02:40 PM JT-Shop: getting close, just need a few parts
02:41 PM roycroft: nice
02:41 PM roycroft: hopefully you'll be getting some smooth cuts soon
02:41 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, I had to make some 1/8" spacers to go under the base of the planer to raise it up high enough to get the infeed and outfeed tables lined up
02:41 PM JT-Shop: powder coating them at the moment
02:41 PM roycroft: i'm starting a build today - a new stand for my wood band saw
02:42 PM JT-Shop: while it was down I did a deep inspection and clean up and lube
02:42 PM roycroft: i'm lowering it 3" so that it will fit easily through the big garage door, and am upgrading the motor to 2hp
02:42 PM _unreal: ok I just enabled mist/flood
02:42 PM roycroft: plus, i'm going to add some blade/spare parts/tool storage on the cabinet
02:42 PM _unreal: and the error went away and direction control is working now?
02:43 PM roycroft: for decades i've had a pile of parts and tools that just gets moved around - i'm sick of it
02:43 PM roycroft: the stuf lives on the bandsaw table
02:43 PM roycroft: and whenever i use the saw i have to move it
02:43 PM JT-Shop: yea it's a pain when you don't have cubby holes for spares and tools specific to a machine
02:43 PM roycroft: it is, and my near-term goal is to build storage for that kind of stuff into every machine
02:44 PM _unreal: waht the hewll
02:44 PM _unreal: ok the issue is in probe basic
02:44 PM roycroft: i'm also adding a slot to store the owners' manual/maintenance manual for each machine on the machine stand itself
02:44 PM _unreal: also m3 m4 m5 does NOT seem to be enabling spindle enable
02:44 PM rs[m]: _unreal: first principle of successful troubleshooting: always change at least 3 settings at once. second principle of successful troubleshooting: taking notes is a distraction and harmful. third principle of successful troubleshooting: never get to the bottom of a problem. cargo cult if possible.
02:44 PM _unreal: which I would assume is m3
02:45 PM _unreal: I think the mist/flood issue was caused by me clicking one of the buttons
02:45 PM _unreal: and not having them defined, it saved it as an ON state
02:46 PM roycroft: interesting that you use the playing card shim method for flattening wide boards
02:46 PM _unreal: after closing lcnc
02:46 PM roycroft: i've never tried that
02:46 PM _unreal: what is also interesting is that I just enabled flood/mist, if I click on them I get LIGHTS on the I/O's
02:47 PM _unreal: m3 should enable any output pin defined as spindle enable right?
02:47 PM roycroft: what i do is joint a 6" wide pass of the board (the width of my jointer), and run that through the thicknesser on a 6" wide sled, so the part that's not flattened hangs down off the sled
02:48 PM roycroft: i should try the playing card method some time to see how well that works for me
02:48 PM roycroft: i have built custom sleds in the past for doing wedge-shaped planing
02:49 PM * roycroft wonders out to the shop, as he was about to work on a cad drawing, but windows insisted that it's time to do upgrades *right now*
02:50 PM _unreal: what gcode command should activate spindle enable?
02:52 PM _unreal: err mcode
02:55 PM rs[m]: did you set spindle speed?
02:58 PM _unreal: s24000 m3
03:13 PM _unreal: ok I just totally rebuilt my INI and the issues went away
03:16 PM _unreal: must have been leaving lines in the IDI
03:16 PM _unreal: INI
03:20 PM _unreal: ok so that cleared up my issues
03:32 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, build a wood chipper with the spare blade
03:37 PM * t4nk_freenode takes down in his diary: _unreal his issues are cleared up, december 13, 2020
03:39 PM t4nk_freenode: he had to rebuild his entire IDI in the end, but he managed to do it, the old bastard!
03:51 PM t4nk_freenode: ... HAUL OUT YOUR BEST STARBOARD!!!!! I say!
03:54 PM * bjorkintosh is t4nk_freenode unreal's bot?
03:55 PM Tom_L: his fan club
03:55 PM bjorkintosh: Ah.
04:00 PM t4nk_freenode: (donations always appreciated btw(
04:01 PM t4nk_freenode: (to buy driver- and star- boards)
04:02 PM bjorkintosh: just post a link to your onlyfans
04:04 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, good idea
04:11 PM _unreal: the only issue I have not solved is getting the wireless pendent working
04:11 PM _unreal: still trying to figure out that one
04:12 PM _unreal: so just got back with the munchkin picked up a christmas tree
05:14 PM rs[m]: _unreal: i took the .hal example in the man page, and included it. don't remember doing anything else (except maybe install a udev file for permissions)
05:16 PM _unreal: which hal file and how did you include it?
05:17 PM rs[m]: the example file in the man page
05:17 PM JT-Cave: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/config/ini-config.html#_hal_section
05:18 PM rs[m]: i included it with "source"
05:19 PM rs[m]: _unreal: this isn't rocket science. read the manual. it is worth it.
05:19 PM rs[m]: if you need further convincing, google for "feynman" and "cargo cult"
05:21 PM JT-Cave: lol
05:22 PM * t4nk_freenode quickly builds a huge cnc machine out of straw
05:23 PM _unreal: 99% of the time I find issues I have are because the people who "design" something for use in linux give you 98% of the details and leave a few aspects out that they JUST expect you to know.
05:23 PM * JT-Cave has never had that problem...
05:24 PM bjorkintosh: left as an exercise for the reader.
05:26 PM rs[m]: _unreal: you have to draw a line somewhere
05:27 PM * JT-Cave watches the pullets tuck their heads under their wings getting ready for a cold night
05:27 PM rs[m]: _unreal: most important skill is to know where to find info when you need it, and with that i don't mean youtube or chat
05:27 PM JT-Cave: amen to that
05:28 PM JT-Cave: when they asked Albert how he remembered all that stuff he said he just remembers where to look it up...
05:29 PM rs[m]: Albert Einstein?
05:29 PM bjorkintosh: Him.
05:30 PM bjorkintosh: I wonder if anyone ever called him anything besides Einstein.
05:30 PM bjorkintosh: like ... 'berto! or 'bertie! or al!
05:30 PM bjorkintosh: allie E!
05:32 PM rs[m]: einstein is kinda extreme example ;)
05:32 PM _unreal: god damn there has been some weird shit going on lately, started hearing this weird repetative high pitch scream. eeeeEEEEEEEE eeeeeEEEEE eeeeeEEEEEE for about 3min. finally got tired of it. stepped outside and the @#$%@#$% auto door front light turned on. as I stepped out. second later I heard a car scream off down the road and the scream is gone
05:32 PM _unreal: WTF...
05:32 PM _unreal: yesterday was that wierd ass line of cars
05:33 PM bjorkintosh: it's unreal!
05:33 PM _unreal: I hate turning that light off so it doesnt give away my opening the door. 99% of the time I forget to turn it back on
05:33 PM rs[m]: THEY are closing in on you, _unreal!
05:33 PM _unreal: no kidding
05:34 PM rs[m]: (insert stupid gun joke)
05:34 PM _unreal: my elderly neighbor her husband died last month as well. and they always sem to be going past her house. THEN again her house is at the end of the T so kind of impossible to not to.
05:36 PM t4nk_freenode: THEN?
05:36 PM t4nk_freenode: or AGAIN?
05:42 PM rs[m]: all that shouting is quite DEAFENING
05:59 PM jdh]: Shhh.
06:11 PM _unreal: what is the name of the room you guys were talking about IF they are even there any more for probe_b asic?
06:11 PM Tom_L: hazzy
06:11 PM Tom_L: i dunno if anybody is there now
06:12 PM Tom_L: doesn't look like it
06:13 PM Tom_L: looks like you might need to join that other platform to reach the developers
06:14 PM Tom_L: qtpyvcp on riot
06:14 PM Tom_L: or whatever server they use
06:17 PM Tom_L: matrix?
06:17 PM Guest33225 is now known as _unreal_
06:17 PM _unreal_: /join #zipit
06:18 PM _unreal_: hum
06:18 PM _unreal_: irc?
06:38 PM Tom_L: no
08:27 PM nvz: can the scattered light from say a 20W blue laser possibly be a concern like even if I were to sit in the room with it flashing for an hour.. am I gonna wind up with a tan or something? :P
08:27 PM nvz: I mean I got eye protection.. I'm just wondering if the flashing will effect my skin or anything
08:28 PM nvz: this whole room is flickering blue if I go down the hall and take these glasses off.. I can't see it at all with these glasses on
10:08 PM nvz: apparently the answer to that is yes, and I need to build an enclosure for this thing :P
10:11 PM XXCoder: skin, not very likely
10:11 PM XXCoder: apparently im wrong? what can laser scatter do to skin?
10:19 PM Tom_L: ever hear of welder's tan?
10:20 PM Tom_L: depending on the spectrum and intensity...
10:20 PM roycroft: yes
10:20 PM roycroft: and i got it on my left forearm when i first started tig welding
10:20 PM roycroft: i quickly learned to wear long sleeves whenever using a tig torch
10:21 PM Tom_L: that's partially why you see most welders wearing long sleeves etc
10:21 PM Tom_L: even on hot days
10:21 PM nvz: yeah I figured at the very least a tan
10:22 PM nvz: but my cousin said he looked it up and they're saying there is skin cancer risk from this wavelength even indirect light
10:22 PM Tom_L: over exposure is a possibility
10:22 PM nvz: I just got a 20W Blue laser engraver today and messin with it
10:22 PM nvz: well right now its sitting right next to me on my desk and engraving takes an hour or more even for something about the size of my hand
10:23 PM XXCoder: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5653718/
10:23 PM nvz: so if I sit here the whole time with this light flickering all over the room.. I'm gettin a LOT of exposure
10:23 PM Tom_L: it's your body, but you only get one
10:24 PM roycroft: yes, there is
10:25 PM XXCoder: that one findings say np
10:25 PM roycroft: btw, when i got it on my forearm i was not welding for very long
10:25 PM XXCoder: no, in least for co2 lasers
10:25 PM XXCoder: im not talking about tig but laser light
10:25 PM roycroft: only a few minutes, but my arm got burned
10:25 PM roycroft: sunburned
10:25 PM roycroft: er
10:25 PM roycroft: tigburned
10:25 PM Tom_L: problem is, you won't know until it's too late so why take a chance
10:26 PM roycroft: i'm pretty safe
10:26 PM Tom_L: not you...
10:26 PM roycroft: this was during a welding class
10:26 PM roycroft: and i was doing oxy-acetylene that night
10:26 PM roycroft: but then the instructor asked me if i wanted to spend some time on the a tig welder
10:27 PM roycroft: and i did not want to turn that opportunity down
10:27 PM Tom_L: we didn't have tig
10:27 PM Tom_L: i did torch and stick in skool
10:27 PM XXCoder: tom only thing i can find is that article, and it says nope lasers exposure dont cause cancer, in least co2 lasers
10:28 PM XXCoder: (ignoring that it certainly can burn)
10:28 PM roycroft: i don't know about cancer, but lasers can put your eye out
10:29 PM XXCoder: yeah thats why I bought expensive goggle that actually match my mini laser nm
10:29 PM roycroft: i already have my goggles
10:29 PM roycroft: my laser arrives tomorrow
10:29 PM nvz: I have adequate eye protection and intend to build an enclosure regardless eventually just didnt know if it was a concern to do immediately
10:29 PM roycroft: i got goggles that are wrap-around
10:29 PM XXCoder: roy mine too
10:30 PM roycroft: the printer on which i'll be mounting the laser is in front of a window
10:30 PM XXCoder: only 3 major senses left, im sure as fuck not risking my eyes
10:30 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI
10:30 PM roycroft: so i'm going to construct a baffle to ensure that none of the laser light can reflect through the window
10:30 PM XXCoder: nice
10:30 PM roycroft: it's only 4.5w output
10:31 PM roycroft: so not really powerful
10:31 PM roycroft: but 250mw is enough to put your eye out
10:31 PM nvz: mine is I think 2300mw
10:32 PM nvz: 400-460nm
10:34 PM roycroft: so i was fortunate today
10:34 PM roycroft: the motor i'm going to put on my bandsaw is rather scuffed up, and i had to make a new cover for the wiring box
10:34 PM roycroft: i wanted to do some touch up painting before installing it, but the motor was an odd khaki color
10:35 PM roycroft: i went to the store, and they had a dozen or so different shades of khaki spray paint
10:35 PM roycroft: the one i picked turned out to be a perfect match
10:36 PM roycroft: i'd normally have brought the wiring box cover plate with me to match it in the store, but since that was missing i couldn't bring anything
10:36 PM roycroft: i was not going to lug a 2hp motor into a store just to match the paint color
10:37 PM roycroft: i had no idea there were so many shades of khaki paint available
10:37 PM roycroft: i figured i'd find 2-3 at the most, and pick the one that seemed closest, and live with a somewhat close match
10:41 PM nvz: I am just gonna build a box to put my machine in and put a exhaust fan to a dryer vent hose and window and put windows in it that are made out of proper safety material for the wavelength of the laser
10:41 PM nvz: and for time being I guess if I'll find a cardboard box that fits over it and if I'm in here I'll cover it
10:42 PM Tom_L: don't leave it unattended
10:42 PM Tom_L: a guy in here burnt his house down when he walked into the next room for a bit and came back
10:43 PM nvz: well with the thin wood I was burning on a wood desk earlier I find that to be far more likely..
10:43 PM nvz: but with the ceramic tile I'm burning now ... far less so
10:43 PM nvz: all things to consider as I build a proper setup here though
10:44 PM nvz: as I also need a mat that has a grid
10:45 PM nvz: damn thing.. apparently when you pause this software, it has a timeout.. cause I was just standing here looking for some things.. had it paused.. and the window is behind my irc terminal and it just started going again
10:57 PM XXCoder: why would it have timeout on pause? weird
