01:06 AM Deejay: moin
03:55 AM Loetmichel: grrr. HP and their "anti EMI tricks"... have to shield the Laser signal FFCs of a HP M452... have to put nearly a mm of plastic between the FFC and the copper tape for it to work. They made the signals SO weak that they are barely a sine without any shielding. Put a ground plane to near to those signals and they are dampened enough that they simply refuse to be recognized :(
03:59 AM rs[m]: putting copper tape on a FFC completely messes up the impedance, no wonder this can have strange effects on "high speed" signaling
04:08 AM Loetmichel: indeed
04:08 AM Loetmichel: thats the point
04:09 AM Loetmichel: and its exaggerated by the fact that they made the drivers intentionally weak to have not to counteract harmonics that much
04:22 AM rs[m]: nothing wrong with that
04:23 AM rs[m]: you have to take it like this: if it was easy (shielding that stuff), everybody could and would do it ;)
04:43 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:43 AM XXCoder: yo
04:44 AM XXCoder: did you read about ways to save your data?
04:44 AM JT-Cave: no
04:44 AM XXCoder: proxy caching and ublock (with anti-antiblock enabled)
05:54 AM Tom_L: morning
05:54 AM XXCoder: yo
07:51 AM jymmmm: Morning
07:58 AM beachbumpete1: Morning
07:59 AM beachbumpete1: Man that was an impressive display at Boca Chica yesterday
08:59 AM Loetmichel: hehe, just was soldering something and had to hold a wire so i put the iron between my teeth... then coworker called and i turned my head... barely avoided a burn scar AGAIN on my cheek... "and thats how you get a "schmiss"" i told my coworker :D
09:03 AM Loetmichel: (a "schmiss" is a ritual dueling scar, typically from a duelling fraternity (yes, they still exist))
10:15 AM unterhaus: I have some phoenix terminal blocks and I need an end cap. Someone is selling 2 end caps for $1 on ebay
10:15 AM unterhaus: I guess some people need something to do
10:18 AM roycroft: or maybe someone is trying not to be wasteful
10:23 AM unterhaus: I think I would put all the terminal blocks and end caps in a big lot and sell them that way
10:23 AM gregcnc: some people make seemingly odd choices in grouping their items
10:23 AM roycroft: sure, if you thought you would easily find a buyer for a big lot of them
10:24 AM roycroft: perhaps the person only has two of them
10:24 AM unterhaus: they also have the terminal blocks
10:24 AM unterhaus: I was hoping they had the shorting bridges, but no joy
10:25 AM unterhaus: I wonder what happens to all the shorting bridges
10:26 AM unterhaus: it actually meets my needs, but it's a little weird. Sorta like selling a rusty pliers for $2 on cl
10:27 AM gregcnc: not at all
10:27 AM gregcnc: if you bought it, it worked?
10:31 AM unterhaus: it never works, who needs rusty pliers?
10:32 AM unterhaus: if a 500 watt servo drive takes a 1 amp fuse, can it possibly deliver 500 watts?
10:35 AM gregcnc: 500V?
10:35 AM gregcnc: no spec sheet?
10:48 AM unterhaus: I have no idea what they are talking about with this fuse, the drive takes 5A rms, as one might expect
10:49 AM unterhaus: I don't remember seeing any internal fuses for part of the drive either
10:50 AM unterhaus: I'm fascinated by the estop circuit, it disconnects the drive from power and connects the motor to resistors
10:51 AM gregcnc: that's common I'm pretty sure
10:57 AM skunkworks: new home...
10:57 AM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20201210_105253.jpg
10:57 AM skunkworks: Needs home switches. (and a high speed spindle - but that might be the 5 year plan)
10:59 AM unterhaus: what is going on with that spindle? Does it move?
11:02 AM unterhaus: the manual says the 500w drive has an inrush current of 75a
11:03 AM skunkworks: spindle? think of it as a teeny tiny knee mill
11:03 AM skunkworks: (with no quill)
11:05 AM unterhaus: is there a stepper for the knee that's almost hidden?
11:06 AM unterhaus: bridgeport had a cnc that used the knee for z motion
11:06 AM gregcnc: mounted to the base, behind the y motor in the pic
11:06 AM skunkworks: yes - it is mounted on the base
12:00 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, it looks lonely
12:09 PM skunkworks: needs a lathe? small one?
12:16 PM Tom_L: you leavin the green machine at the shop?
12:17 PM Tom_L: i'd sneak off with it if i could
05:14 PM Tom_L: trying to find an exploded view of my old craftsman (atlas) lathe 101.07901 and not having much luck
05:14 PM Tom_L: maybe somebody has a better search idea?
05:18 PM Tom_itx: http://www.lathes.co.uk/atlas6inch/
05:18 PM Tom_itx: close but not it
05:38 PM JT-Cave: I had one of those old atlas lathes a while back
05:38 PM Tom_L: i need to take the spindle tube out
05:39 PM Tom_L: there's what i think is a halfmoon key toward the front i need to get out before i can pull the tube
05:40 PM Tom_L: but i can't tell for sure
05:40 PM JT-Cave: I didn't take the spindle apart so no clue here, I just did some fixing up then sold it
05:40 PM Tom_itx: http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/images/14961-B.jpg
05:40 PM Tom_L: looks just like that
05:40 PM Tom_L: but that one says it's a different model
05:41 PM Tom_L: there's a key on that larger backgear
05:41 PM JT-Cave: that looks similar to the one I had
05:41 PM Tom_L: but i can't figure out how to get it out
05:42 PM Tom_L: it's all loose but won't come thru the bushing with that key in place
05:42 PM Tom_L: i've had it for probably 40 yrs
05:42 PM Tom_L: :)
05:42 PM JT-Cave: got a photo of the part
05:43 PM Tom_L: no, it's the key under that gear
05:43 PM Tom_L: about has to be half moon but i can't seem to budge it
05:44 PM JT-Cave: under the big back gear?
05:44 PM Tom_itx: yes
05:44 PM Tom_L: it goes together like a puzzle
05:45 PM JT-Cave: lol
05:45 PM Tom_L: it's probably just stuck
05:45 PM JT-Cave: sounds like my delta planer
05:45 PM Tom_L: but there's no room to get to it really
05:48 PM Tom_L: well gonna go see if i can break it...
05:48 PM roycroft: perhaps you need a bigger hammer
05:48 PM Tom_L: naw
05:52 PM Tom_L: could use some thicker goggles though
05:52 PM roycroft: trading your beer goggles for whisky goggles?
05:59 PM JT-Cave: starting to reassemble the delta planer with the insert head... got a few parts I'm waiting on to finish
06:05 PM JT-Cave: I'm guessing that when the wife retires at the end of the month she won't need 40 pairs of shoes...
06:05 PM XXCoder: nah just 80 pairs
06:10 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/lux-cut-06.jpg
06:10 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/delta-planer/lux-cut-07.jpg
06:11 PM JT-Cave: I hooked my neighbors she-shed panel today while she was at work so she can put some christmas lights up... going to surprise her tomorrow
06:12 PM Tom_L: ok puzzle solved
06:12 PM JT-Cave: photo?
06:12 PM Tom_L: after while
06:12 PM JT-Cave: k
06:12 PM Tom_L: the half moon was 'suction' stuck :)
06:13 PM JT-Cave: interesting...
06:13 PM roycroft: those gearboxes are notorious for leaking, jt-cave
06:13 PM Tom_L: not alot of room to work either
06:13 PM roycroft: i hope you got a new gasket and new seals for yours
06:13 PM JT-Cave: yea, the gasket was in bad shape and not even touching at the top lol
06:13 PM JT-Cave: all new bearings, seals and gasket
06:14 PM roycroft: there's a seal for the high-low lever that is where they like to leak
06:14 PM JT-Cave: new chains and a new gear
06:14 PM JT-Cave: that's just an o ring
06:14 PM roycroft: right
06:14 PM JT-Cave: replaced that already
06:14 PM roycroft: but it will leak if you don't replace it :)
06:15 PM JT-Cave: I actually had that o ring in my o ring collection!
06:15 PM roycroft: it seems that most thicknessers are based on the delta/rockwell design, and incorporate all the same design flaws
06:16 PM roycroft: i guess that's a feature
06:16 PM roycroft: if you know how the original sucks you know how the clones suck
06:16 PM JT-Cave: what design flaws?
06:16 PM roycroft: the tendency of the gearbox to leak
06:17 PM roycroft: also the outfeed roller is serrated metal, and that can make for a rough finish - it can imprint on the material if you take a light cut
06:17 PM JT-Cave: ah, 4 of the 5 bolts were loose and the gasket was out of place and the shift o ring was flat
06:17 PM roycroft: grizzly finally started making a replacement rubber outeed roller
06:17 PM roycroft: outfeed
06:17 PM JT-Cave: outfeed is smooth
06:17 PM roycroft: and i hear they're using the rubber one on the current models
06:17 PM pfred1: I use an auxillary table in my planer
06:18 PM JT-Cave: this one is smooth steel roller
06:18 PM pfred1: they should come with one stock
06:18 PM roycroft: maybe delta had fixed it by the time yours was made
06:18 PM pfred1: I have a DeWalt
06:19 PM pfred1: the old one
06:19 PM roycroft: dewalt only make portable planers
06:19 PM roycroft: so yours is not a delta clone
06:19 PM pfred1: yes
06:19 PM roycroft: i'm talking about delta and its clones
06:19 PM pfred1: ah
06:20 PM pfred1: yeah i have a lunchbox
06:20 PM roycroft: jet/grizzly/general/etc.
06:20 PM JT-Cave: mine is a delta 22-785X5
06:20 PM * roycroft needs to decide what to make for dinner
06:20 PM pfred1: I need to find some leftovers
06:21 PM * JT-Cave is having rabbit food
06:21 PM Tom_L: pics on the way
06:21 PM JT-Cave: k
06:22 PM roycroft: https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-15-3-hp-planer-with-spiral-cutterhead/g0453z
06:22 PM roycroft: that's what i have
06:22 PM roycroft: it probably looks familiar
06:24 PM roycroft: oh, yours is the one with the motor on the top
06:24 PM roycroft: so mine is not a clone of that
06:24 PM JT-Cave: yea
06:24 PM roycroft: the gearbox looks the same though
06:25 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Craftsman_lathe/
06:25 PM roycroft: i like the height adjustment on yours
06:26 PM roycroft: the handwheel being horizontal is nice
06:26 PM JT-Cave: yes, and the wixley dro is nice too
06:26 PM roycroft: mine is vertical, and it's hard to microadjust because the crank makes the handwheel unbalanced
06:26 PM roycroft: yes, i have the wixey dro on mine
06:26 PM roycroft: outstanding upgrade
06:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Craftsman_lathe/spindle4.jpg
06:26 PM Tom_L: that key was the bugger
06:27 PM JT-Cave: chow time here
06:27 PM Tom_L: just had chicken noodle soup
06:28 PM JT-Cave: did you try some of that better than bouillon
06:29 PM roycroft: the fda advisory panel have recommended emergency authorization of the pfeizer vaccine
06:29 PM roycroft: the fda could approve it as soon as tomorrow
06:29 PM JT-Cave: good
06:29 PM * JT-Cave stays hiding out in the woods
06:30 PM roycroft: yeah, the science is good on that one
06:30 PM roycroft: of course, the anti-vaxers are being total idiots about it
06:30 PM roycroft: making impossible claims
06:30 PM roycroft: but oh well
06:30 PM roycroft: that was bound to happen
06:30 PM JT-Cave: always
06:30 PM roycroft: some kinds of stupid can't be fixed
06:30 PM JT-Cave: we must give them the Darwin award
06:31 PM roycroft: they don't know the difference between an rna vaccine and a traditional dentured virus vaccine
06:31 PM roycroft: the problem is that a significant percentage of the population may refuse to be vaccinated
06:32 PM roycroft: and if they don't, the pandemic won't be over for a very long time
06:32 PM roycroft: but i'm optimistic that as the vaccines are approved and folks start getting them, more and more of the ones who resist will change their minds
06:33 PM roycroft: i want to get back to something resembling normal well before this time next year
06:35 PM roycroft: the pandemic has been going on for at least 32 scaramuccis already, and will probably last another 15-20 if we start getting folks vaccinated quickly
06:36 PM roycroft: but if they don't it could be 50 more, easily
06:57 PM pfred1: I'm not taking any vaccine
07:32 PM * Tom_L hi 5's pfred1
07:32 PM Tom_L: roycroft, alot of ppl in uk are getting rather ill over the vaccine
07:32 PM Tom_L: they say don't take it unless you're in a facility that can revive you
07:35 PM XXCoder: tom got sick by vaccine?
07:35 PM Tom_L: no i haven't gotten it
07:36 PM Tom_L: i don't plan to be one of the first either
07:36 PM XXCoder: im not sure what you meant
07:36 PM XXCoder: "alot of ppl in uk are getting rather ill over the vaccine"
07:37 PM Tom_L: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/12/09/covid-pfizer-vaccine-allergic-reaction-uk/6505867002/
07:37 PM Tom_L: allergic reactions
07:38 PM jdh__: did you read that link?
07:38 PM Tom_L: i got it 2nd hand from the mrs
07:39 PM Tom_L: if you have severe allergies wait?
07:39 PM XXCoder: looks like. they havent identifed what allegy
07:40 PM Tom_L: not something they predicted either
07:40 PM Tom_L: in general when ppl rush accidents happen
07:41 PM XXCoder: usa seem to have excluded allegy people, thats why theu didnt know. uk had issues but went adread anyway
07:43 PM roycroft: the usa did not
07:43 PM roycroft: pfeizer and moderna are the ones who excluded them
07:43 PM roycroft: and this was not totally unexpected
07:43 PM Tom_L: it makes me take pause
07:44 PM roycroft: in fact, it may be a strong contributing factor in the high efficacy of the vaccines
07:45 PM roycroft: it's theorized that something in the nanolipid capsules is the cause of the allergic reactions
07:45 PM Tom_L: i'm not a scientist but when they say be close to a facility that can revive you i take notice
07:46 PM roycroft: do you suffer from allergies?
07:46 PM Tom_L: not as much as the mrs
07:46 PM Tom_L: but to a degree yes
07:47 PM roycroft: to my knowledge, nobody who does not already have allergies had reacted poorly to the vaccines
07:47 PM Tom_L: who's to say what the threshhold is?
07:47 PM XXCoder: you know what exactly allegries type it happens to?
07:47 PM Tom_L: nope
07:47 PM roycroft: well by the time the vaccines are available to you we should know a lot more about it
07:48 PM roycroft: and it may be that the rna vaccines in the nanolipid capsules will not be given to people with allergies
07:49 PM roycroft: there may also be a different type of packaging for rna vaccines by then
07:49 PM roycroft: i just heard an er doctor ranting about the deployment plan
07:49 PM roycroft: he was saying that health care workers should not be first in the queue
07:49 PM roycroft: that it won't solve his problem at all
07:49 PM roycroft: his problem is that the icus are full
07:50 PM roycroft: he was saying that elderly and high risk people should get vaccinated before health care workers, to lessen the load on the icus
07:50 PM roycroft: and there's a point to that, but as soon as he said it my first thought was that those same people are the ones who would fare the worst from any side effects
07:51 PM Tom_L: :)
07:51 PM Tom_L: population control?
07:51 PM roycroft: and perhaps healthy health care workers really should be first, so that if there are any negative side effects we'll find out from those folks, who are more likely to recover
07:51 PM Tom_L: these aer supposed to be well educated ppl
07:52 PM roycroft: any new drug or vaccine has this problem
07:52 PM roycroft: clinical testing is done
07:52 PM roycroft: and we learn a lot from that
07:52 PM Tom_L: well of course, that's why i'm in no rush
07:52 PM roycroft: but as soon as it is deployed in the field we learn a lot more
07:53 PM roycroft: fortunately for you, unless you're a health care worker, over 65, or otherwise at high risk it won't be available for some months yet for you
07:53 PM roycroft: so whether you're in a rush or not it doesn't matter
07:53 PM roycroft: march-april is the soonest you'll get it
07:53 PM roycroft: oh, if you're rich i'm sure you could get it 30 seconds after the fda approves it, if not before it's approved
07:54 PM Tom_L: i hope they do
07:54 PM roycroft: but if you were rich enough to be able to get it right away you would not be on irc :)
07:54 PM Tom_L: they should have an express lane for them
07:55 PM roycroft: the university of oregon are offering free testing
07:55 PM roycroft: nice
07:55 PM roycroft: except you have to queue up at their basketball stadium with thousands of other people to wait for your go
07:55 PM roycroft: that seems rather counter-productive to me
07:55 PM Tom_L: anything free will have that result
08:56 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sears-Craftsman-12-Lathe-101-27580-90-101-28930-40-50-70-w-QC-manual-1895-/382596183654
08:59 PM Tom_L: yeah, mine is smaller
08:59 PM Tom_L: but i did figure it out
09:00 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Craftsman_lathe/spindle4.jpg
09:01 PM Tom_L: when you're putting it together, you only have half that half moon space to insert it under the gear
09:04 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: yes - the green machine would be a pain to put in the basement
09:05 PM unterhaus: I have a bridgeport series 2 in the basement, so get to it
09:05 PM unterhaus: TBH, I don't want to think about getting it out though
09:05 PM skunkworks: heh - hard core
09:05 PM Tom_L: heh
10:45 PM unterhaus: trying to remember where I put my oscilloscope
10:45 PM unterhaus: shouldn't be that hard to find it, it's not small
10:54 PM pfred1: I just ordered a small oscilloscope
10:54 PM pfred1: I can lose big stuff too
10:54 PM pfred1: I was looking for this sleeping pad i use to work on the other day and it's gone
10:55 PM pfred1: like when I have to crawl on the ground you know?
