10:42 AM gloops: sounds fine to me
10:44 AM gloops: neighbours will wonder what the hell is going on in your place though heh
11:03 AM t4nk_freenode: sounds fine, yeh, for a crude stepper driver, not for a good one ;)
11:03 AM t4nk_freenode: see? this is why I asked to see the vid ;)
11:04 AM gregcnc: steppers make all sorts of noise
11:04 AM t4nk_freenode: badly driven, yes
11:05 AM Tom_L: they sure do :)
11:05 AM t4nk_freenode: when I drove those dvd steppers with homemade h-bridges... they sounded like typewriters
11:05 AM t4nk_freenode: with a real driver there is No sound
11:06 AM Tom_L: not true
11:06 AM t4nk_freenode: but btw... we can't see all the motors in the cid
11:06 AM t4nk_freenode: vid
11:06 AM gregcnc: I have berger Lahr drivers and they are very loud at certain speeds
11:07 AM t4nk_freenode: Tom_L, ... your 'not true' is absolutely not true
11:07 AM gregcnc: resonant frequencies and all
11:07 AM Tom_L: is so :)
11:07 AM Tom_L: you can still hear them
11:07 AM t4nk_freenode: well, I got the hands on experience
11:07 AM gregcnc: I'm thinking about adding some dampers to the shafts or just servos
11:08 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, you figure out what that thumping noise was?
11:08 AM Tom_L: not entirely but it was enhanced by _BOTH_ belt covers
11:11 AM JT-Shop: weird
11:12 AM Tom_L: i think it's something in the way the two interact
11:12 AM Tom_L: the threads are good
11:13 AM t4nk_freenode: I'm not quite ready to test yet, but I'm curious to the difference between those a4988 drivers in my 3d printer, vs 2809's
11:14 AM t4nk_freenode: make that 2209's ;)
11:19 AM Tom_L: data sheets will tell you all about that
11:20 AM gregcnc: so which drivers are real? I really would like to get rid of the noise and resonance in my machines
11:20 AM skunkworks: Tom_L: no - link?
11:21 AM Tom_L: skunkworks, been trying to isolate the 'noise' in it. maybe you have an idea
11:21 AM skunkworks: noise?
11:21 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV7crK24eCE
11:22 AM Tom_L: the belt covers enhance it
11:22 AM gregcnc: oh do you have servos or steppers?
11:22 AM Tom_L: steppers
11:23 AM Tom_L: i'm not overly worried about it
11:23 AM gregcnc: probably the same kind of resonance I see in my machines
11:25 AM _unreal_: fewwwww
11:25 AM _unreal_: just mowed the lawn
11:25 AM _unreal_: freaking 88f out
11:26 AM t4nk_freenode: is that cold or warm? I just went out and it was cold, gusty and showering down
11:27 AM Tom_L: _unreal_, i checked the rapids feedrate last night after you mentioned it... 210 ipm is where mine is set
11:28 AM Tom_L: and 90 on Z but it's 3:1 reduction
11:52 AM gloops: useful book i saw - The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up -The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing (2014) - Marie Kondo.epub
11:52 AM t4nk_freenode: tempting :))
11:53 AM t4nk_freenode: wish someone could read it to me though, I'm too lazy :b
11:53 AM gloops: yeah would only end up in some box full of crap
11:59 AM skunkworks: odd
12:08 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, i think the reversing will be ok since it's not turning that fast
12:09 PM Tom_L: G33.1 doesn't trip the brake signal when it stops
01:33 PM unterhaus_: I think Marie Kondo is evil, but you should read my book, "touch everything you own every year"
01:34 PM unterhaus_: if you don't do that, eventually you will start to question your sanity for having some of the stuff you own
01:35 PM Rab: I bought LED light bulbs specifically so I don't have to touch them every year!
01:41 PM Tom_L: or realize why you had it when something breaks and you had what you needed to fix it
01:49 PM veegee_: Can anyone identify this CAD tool: http://scarborosteelworks.com/images/services/3d-modeling-and-drafting-3.jpg
01:50 PM veegee_ is now known as veegee
01:50 PM unterhaus_: okay, going to revise the title to, "touch everything you are storing once a year"
01:51 PM unterhaus_: I usually spend more time finding something I need than putting it in service
01:51 PM Rab: veegee, it says Tekla Structures in the screenshot: https://www.tekla.com/products/tekla-structures
01:52 PM veegee: Rab silly me, thanks
01:53 PM unterhaus_: I have a box with timing belts and pulleys in it and can't find it. Got to be under the porch somewhere
01:59 PM Tom_L: Tekla Structural Designer
02:00 PM Tom_L: https://www.tekla.com/us/tekla-structural-designer-getting-started
02:08 PM unterhaus_: I just found a box under the porch with all sorts of useful stuff that I would have wondered where it was if I needed it
02:08 PM unterhaus_: but no timing belts
02:13 PM gregcnc: i just got 4 led bulbs replaced from cree this week
02:14 PM gregcnc: i also bought them so I didn't have to touch them, oh well
02:16 PM unterhaus_: I haven't had that problem, I still have some really old led bulbs
02:16 PM unterhaus_: but it always seemed that the drivers had to be so cheap that lifetime projections were fantasy
02:17 PM unterhaus_: my old ones cost $20 or something like that
02:20 PM gregcnc: 2 were of the first cheaper ones, but two were recent certainly less than two years old, current model
02:39 PM unterhaus_: that's not good
02:41 PM unterhaus_: my reference to cheap was a high power emitter plus SMPS for under $2 is really cheap in comparison to a wire inside an evacuated glass bulb
02:42 PM unterhaus_: going back under the porch to touch more of my stuff
02:44 PM gregcnc: I mean the first cree bulbs that were reasonably priced. not even sure if there were expensive ones before that
03:00 PM unterhaus_: someone is giving away a tv because it turns off randomly and it turns out there are 6 settings that can cause that to happen
03:03 PM unterhaus_: cree was originally an emitter company, so I'm not sure what possessed them to go into light bulbs
04:00 PM jymmmm: Got gear? https://youtu.be/mgIHN0evfzQ?t=171
04:05 PM robotustra: interesting what are these gears for
04:05 PM Tom_L: moped
04:06 PM robotustra: it's a russian word
04:08 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, you think you'd get fired if you scrapped 1 part?
04:08 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: Nope, never
04:18 PM unterhaus: I wish I had looked in the box labeled "motors" before bulk trash day
04:18 PM unterhaus: left off, "uninteresting"
04:30 PM unterhaus: had some really large 400v 4400uF capacitors
04:31 PM unterhaus: "Paul Bastard, the antibody study's lead author"
05:15 PM snaked is now known as uncle_snaked
06:59 PM unterhaus: finding the timing belt isn't going well, but the trash guys are going to get a workout this week
07:32 PM _unreal_: ?
07:33 PM _unreal_: so what did you guys think of that video I posted today?
07:39 PM Tom_L: what video?
07:58 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, this one
07:58 PM _unreal_: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QOZJK2efGm32NHqcRpXUnRHQoxsFafPY/view?usp=sharing
07:58 PM _unreal_: the controller is fucked up
08:00 PM Tom_L: the slow speed squeal?
08:07 PM Tom_L: that doesn't sound normal
08:08 PM Tom_L: tried messing with the step timing?
08:26 PM roycroft: is it some law of nature that dictates that within 5 nanoseconds of submitting an order to mcmaster one thinks of something else that needed to be on the order?
08:26 PM roycroft: that happens to me every time i order from them
08:27 PM roycroft: and today i even had a cunning plan - i set up the order, and went away and did something else for a while before pussing the commit button
08:27 PM Tom_L: digikey you can call them 24/7 and fix it
08:27 PM roycroft: it's sunday night
08:27 PM roycroft: after 6pm
08:28 PM Tom_L: so call them Monday AM
08:28 PM roycroft: there's about a 100% chance that mcmaster have already packed the order
08:28 PM roycroft: because it's been a good 5 minutes since i submitted it
08:28 PM roycroft: but the stuff i'm ordering is not digi-key stuff - it's mcmaster stuff
08:28 PM roycroft: it's all fasteners
08:28 PM Tom_L: good companies have good policies
08:29 PM Tom_L: i'd call
08:29 PM roycroft: they're a good company
08:29 PM roycroft: i've called in the past
08:29 PM roycroft: they really do process orders instantly
08:30 PM roycroft: i've called them before seconds after submitting an order, and they always try to make the adjustment, but they also always find out it's too late
08:30 PM roycroft: and they always tell me i can just refuse the order and have it returned to them, and then order everything i need
08:30 PM roycroft: but that costs them a bunch of money, and i don't feel right about making them pay for my mistake
08:31 PM roycroft: fortunately i can live without the item i forgot for a while, and i do have another order to make with them soon
08:42 PM unterhaus: that's the genius of amazon prime, to my downfall
08:43 PM roycroft: the item i forgot is available on amazon
08:43 PM roycroft: with delivery between january 23 and february 17
08:47 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, around?
08:50 PM unterhaus: I never order anything through amazon that they don't have a decent stock of in their warehouse
08:50 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, its got something fucked up
08:50 PM _unreal_: its the motor controller that is doing it
09:06 PM unterhaus: I found an empty storage bin on a shelf and it made me happier than it should have
09:08 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: currently
09:14 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, i found it
09:14 PM Tom_L: looking for your 1" tapping video
09:32 PM veegee: Oh my dog. The service manual on ebay costs like $30 + shipping + import
09:32 PM veegee: fuck me sideways
09:34 PM veegee: First thing I'm doing is scanning it in and submitting it to a site that archives service/maintenance manuals...
10:02 PM unterhaus: what manual?
10:54 PM unterhaus: I think I figured out my timing belt, it has to be a 390H150. $56 from mcmaster or $12 from "veebeltguys"
11:43 PM unterhaus: FB woodworking group. Half the people are telling a guy how to hook up his 120v tablesaw to 220
11:44 PM jymmmm: Ouch
