12:47 AM Deejay: moin
01:28 AM Loetmichel: mornin'
01:32 AM Loetmichel: i **love** it when boss puts a delivery slip on my desk with no comment but a lot of "!" made with text marker... with an item to make and the date of friday. Hrrrmph :(
01:33 AM Loetmichel: LAST friday
03:15 AM veegee: Son of a bitch
03:15 AM veegee: I got the replacement hydraulic hose for the main mast cylinder on my forklift
03:16 AM veegee: But the other end, where it's connected to the cylinder is a flare connection and underneath the forklift
03:16 AM veegee: such a pain in the ass
03:16 AM veegee: now I have to figure out how to jack the front end of the forklift up to get enough space for two wrenches and my arms to loosen that flare nut
03:18 AM veegee: I guess it could be worse. At least they broke out the connection to the cylinder with a more accessible extension hose and flare fitting. Would be a nightmare if it were directly attached to the cylinder; I'd probably have to disassemble the whole front end
03:18 AM veegee: Loetmichel that means you get a whole year to do it
03:19 AM Loetmichel: veegee: optimist ;)
03:20 AM veegee: Luckily I have no boss
03:20 AM veegee: And I'd never pull that shit on my employees lol
03:21 AM veegee: They always get to make their own timelines
03:30 AM Loetmichel: *GNAH!* "BOOOOSSS, Drive the Coworker to the ER, please! He just managed to drive an automatic centerpunch thru his thumb!" MAAAN, cant go SOMETHING smooth today?!?
03:35 AM XXCoder: ugh
04:15 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:15 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:38 AM veegee: Loetmichel LOL did that actually just happen?
05:38 AM veegee: You have to be pretty dumb to drive an automatic punch through yourself
05:40 AM XXCoder: just dangerous level of inattention
05:51 AM enleth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPPlTX2a974
05:52 AM enleth: "Song about CNC-technology in North Korea [English Lyrics]"
05:52 AM Loetmichel: veegee: round part, he slipped off and had the thumb at the wrong place
05:52 AM enleth: looks legit
05:52 AM veegee: well he just got some nice time off work
05:52 AM enleth: if their CNC technology is as advanced as their video cameras, though
05:57 AM XXCoder: camera person below very heavy ring being moved. very safe
05:58 AM XXCoder: "while pariotism burns in our hearts"
06:17 AM Tom_L: morning
06:17 AM XXCoder: yo
06:58 AM miss0r2: Why does all north korean music sound like it was recorded with a toaster oven?
07:10 AM JavaBean: probably was
07:56 AM enleth: miss0r2: because they couldn't record it with the vacuum cleaner, the only one they had was already being used to record the video
08:43 AM Loetmichel: *gnah* Note to self: Spray glue dont only touches down where you want it to. Now both of my forearms are tacky :-)
09:33 AM * JT-Cave is off to actually make money with Python and Rpi
09:41 AM koo5: spiderman, spiderman
01:39 PM Centreline: evening
01:42 PM JT-Cave: yo
01:46 PM Loetmichel: *gnah* how idiotic can one be? Changed my car headlights back from LED to H7 halogen for legal reasons... was just checking whicht of the two LEDs still works... now i have a few funny dark spots in my vision.... MAAAN those chips are BRIGHT... :frowning:
01:59 PM Centreline: for legal reasons, TUV time?
02:01 PM Centreline: if you can still read the screen, between the golden spots
02:02 PM Loetmichel: i can
02:03 PM Loetmichel: and they are dimishing already
02:03 PM Loetmichel: no, one failed, and i noticed they are LEDs. not allowed in germany
02:03 PM Loetmichel: so i had to change both
02:03 PM Loetmichel: (Previous owner installed them)
02:04 PM Loetmichel: TÜV is still a year to go
02:05 PM Centreline: what about on new cars, leds are factory, or is it only allowed on factory led cars?
02:05 PM Loetmichel: Factory leds are allowe
02:05 PM Loetmichel: d
02:05 PM Centreline: or do you get special german lenses for each model
02:05 PM Loetmichel: aftermarket Halogen replacements are not
02:06 PM Centreline: ok, probably because most will burn holes in paper at 200m
02:06 PM Loetmichel: more like because they have a different geometry than the incandescent ones and tend to blind the oncoming traffic in reflectors/lenses made for halogen
02:07 PM Centreline: I took my 1977 landrover to control and it had led bulbs in, and the tester asked me why, and I told him less drain on the alternator, and he said ok and passed it
02:07 PM Loetmichel: german?
02:08 PM Centreline: but thats led, not halogen or high power smd, the standard lights crawl out the lamps and fall on the floor so its not hard to improve
02:08 PM Centreline: no France
02:09 PM Centreline: he'd never seen my vehicle type before so I think anything would have gone (its a 101fc, theres 4 here in France I think)
02:09 PM Loetmichel: yeah. german TÜV is a bit anal about a missing ~~~ on the bulb. you cant even change a running light to led unless you change it completely with one made for LEDs (lens and all)
02:10 PM Loetmichel: point isnt that you cant use led, point is that you cant use an LED bulb in a fixture made for Halogen or normal incandescent
02:10 PM * JT-Shop just got Christopher Schwarz's book on workbenches
02:10 PM Loetmichel: because the led bulbs NEVER have the same light geometry and the reflectors dont work that well with the LED replacements
02:11 PM Loetmichel: IIRC there are a very few replacement HEADLIGHTS for older cars that have an E-number and are allowed.
02:11 PM Loetmichel: but there the whole headlight is designed to do the correct job with leds.
02:12 PM Centreline: I do that all the time on my cars/bikes... The only time not, I ordered pure led units to replace the round units, and they arrived with a extra wire, that when energised caused them to have flashing blue leds :D
02:18 PM Centreline: I didnt connect it, because, well, even stupid ideas can seem fun at the wrong time
02:18 PM Centreline: You can get round standard emarked led units (all my older stuff has round lights)
02:18 PM Loetmichel: yeah, if you change the whole unit: different game
02:18 PM Loetmichel: i was talking about this: https://www.ebay.de/itm/2X-H7-LED-1800W-180000LM-Scheinwerfer-Lampen-Headlight-Fern-oder-Abblendlicht/353058333562
02:18 PM Centreline: 1800w. yes paper on fire at 200m...
02:18 PM Loetmichel: thats chinese 1800W
02:18 PM Loetmichel: in reality they draw 35W
02:19 PM Loetmichel: it has headlights made for H7 tungsten filament halogen bulbs
02:19 PM Centreline: I have lucas prince of darkness electrical components, I'm just happy if I have light falling out the front
02:19 PM Loetmichel: not for LED
02:20 PM Centreline: but it has round lamps, so you can switch in led universals for the dimensions in inches easy no?
02:20 PM Loetmichel: so the LEDs in there were blinding the oncoming traffic, unbeknownst to me.
02:21 PM Loetmichel: No, it has "Projector" headlights
02:21 PM Loetmichel: IIRC there is ONE aftermarket headlights with integrated leds that is legal as a replacement.
02:22 PM Loetmichel: but that means to change the WHOLE assembly, not only the bulbs
02:27 PM Centreline: still more cost effective than buying a new headlight for a modern car though
02:29 PM Loetmichel: hey, its a BMW
02:30 PM Loetmichel: i just bought two new headlights for my other BMW, 525i E39... 580 eur one OEM, still 280 one aftermarket
02:30 PM Loetmichel: and thats just the lens assembly, without the Xenon inverters
02:32 PM Loetmichel: i didnt ask what an LED replacement would be ;)
02:32 PM Loetmichel: dont had my heart pills handy ;)
02:32 PM Loetmichel: didnt
02:32 PM Loetmichel: have
02:35 PM Centreline: Thats probably my budget for a replacement engine :)
02:36 PM Centreline: my wife has new cars that just go the dealers to be fixed though, I experience modern pricing that way
02:39 PM Loetmichel: its the cost of driving a BMW
02:39 PM Loetmichel: spare parts are often insanely expensive
02:39 PM Loetmichel: i like them though
02:39 PM Loetmichel: they are pretty reliable for old cars
02:40 PM Loetmichel: ok, have to replace all the brake hard lines on the convertible soon, kicked the brake pedal to the floor once already on the autobahn
02:41 PM Loetmichel: the brake line is fixed, but the mechanic said "You were never here... all 4 lines need URGENT replacement, rusted beyond being safe"
02:41 PM Loetmichel: will do when the "convertible weather" is done
02:41 PM Loetmichel: :-)
02:42 PM Loetmichel: s/floor/floor without resistance or brake action
02:43 PM Loetmichel: but other than that its in pretty good contidion for a 2004 convertible that has 250000km on the odometer
02:44 PM Centreline: I have to completely restore my 101 again, I had a big accident and it was really damaged by hitting a telegraph pole and ended up in ditch
02:44 PM Centreline: 2 days after finishing the first restoration :(
02:44 PM Centreline: I think the chassis is straight though, which is lucky
02:44 PM Centreline: they are too rare to let die
02:45 PM Loetmichel: yeah, old landrovers are getting rare
02:46 PM Centreline: mid resto- http://gallery.pipandphil.com/Vehicles/4Wheels/Land%20Rover%20101FC/front_obscured_001.jpg
02:46 PM * Loetmichel would like to drive an old Ford F100 around. a 1969 model if possible... but they are hellish expensive here in germany, even if only a pile of rust with a VIN
02:47 PM Loetmichel: hehe, i cant belive that a telephone pole damaged that thing.
02:47 PM Centreline: its all aluminium! http://gallery.pipandphil.com/Vehicles/4Wheels/Land%20Rover%20101FC/twisted_cab.jpg
02:47 PM Loetmichel: Friend of mine ripped a stationary "radar gun" out of the ground and spread it across a few 100m road...
02:47 PM Centreline: its not as heavy as it looks, they were military only to be air portable under underpowered 1970's helicopters
02:48 PM Centreline: the fire brigade did most the damage cutting my passenger out (rightly)
02:48 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=16324&g2_serialNumber=1 <- with THAT thing ;)
02:49 PM Centreline: hehe it looks quite robust :-)
02:49 PM Loetmichel: 17 ton AWD military truck converted to an RV
02:49 PM Loetmichel: the front "cowbar" is 450kg alone ;)
02:50 PM Loetmichel: steel pipe
02:50 PM Loetmichel: or rather steel round stock with a small hole in the middle ;)
02:51 PM Centreline: Im making a external cage next time, the cab is too fragile in a front smash
02:51 PM Centreline: that was only 40km/h impact...
02:51 PM Loetmichel: hehe
02:51 PM Centreline: maybe 25-30 actual, I was blinded by then and couldnt see anything :)
02:52 PM Loetmichel: the friend hit a radar pin at 90kph... it ripped out of the ground including the ~2 ton concrete foundation... and flew across the street...
02:53 PM Centreline: the engine block cracked suddenly going up a hill, and it blew the top off the radiator, which is under the cab and the steam melted the catches on the engine lid...
02:53 PM Loetmichel: he called the Police "hey, it flashed in front of me and i got spooked and jerked the steering wheel and hit your radar trap... "
02:53 PM Centreline: so accident damange AND a new engine this time :)
02:53 PM Loetmichel: Police " OOKAY, we send a tow truck."
02:53 PM Centreline: Id have been tempted to take it home as a trophy :D
02:54 PM Loetmichel: Friend: "no need, truck is undamaged. but send someone to brush up the parts of your trap, please"
02:54 PM Loetmichel: "its spread over about 100m street here"...
02:55 PM Loetmichel: Police: "WTF? ...." ;)
02:55 PM Centreline: I have a backhoe and I often think if I had to drive it on the streets I'd collect some :-)
02:56 PM Centreline: "it just got stuck in the bucket officer..." :D
02:56 PM Centreline: maybe take some out with the backacter swinging loose "accidentally"
02:57 PM Centreline: time to hunt some resistors down to connect 5v toolsetter...
02:59 PM Loetmichel: yeah, they sent two police cars to investigate. they couldnt belive that someone pulled that massive concrete block out of the ground by accident
02:59 PM Loetmichel: ... until they saw the truck
02:59 PM Loetmichel: the cow bar didnt even had a dent
02:59 PM Loetmichel: just some scratched paint
03:03 PM Centreline: did they charge him to repair the radar?
03:10 PM Deejay: gn8
04:08 PM Centreline: ok toolsetter working time to call it a night, later all
05:46 PM XXCoder: wow
05:46 PM XXCoder: nonecludian company come up. new bolts. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/749283134893457459/760267690026860574/EFpanfH.jpg
05:52 PM jdh: I could have used one of those this w/e
06:07 PM XXCoder: :)
06:57 PM _unreal_: so I just finished building this https://openbuilds.com/threads/black-box-limit-switch-wiring.15378/
06:57 PM _unreal_: I'm wondering think this will clean up my limit switch issues? OR do I still need to switch them to serial active low rather then ACTIVE HIGH N/O side of the limit switch
07:00 PM Tom_L: the caps and resistors?
07:00 PM Tom_L: that's basically a hardware debounce
07:11 PM Tom_L: NC is the preferred normal state
07:45 PM _unreal_: SWEET!!!! just tested my TINY little board with SMD parts on it...
07:46 PM _unreal_: and realized that I used a resistor array that has only 4 resistors..
07:46 PM _unreal_: I forgot I needed 5 sensors.
07:46 PM _unreal_: xyz probe, estop
07:46 PM _unreal_: so I'm going to have to manually toss a resistor and an other freaking cap
07:47 PM _unreal_: but her little machine just worked fine with her limit switches. NO bounching issues and it did a good home cycle
07:47 PM _unreal_: soo happy
07:47 PM Tom_L: the cap resistor debounce works
07:47 PM _unreal_: one step closer to closing up the main controller box and box case....
07:48 PM _unreal_: yesterday she/we did a drawing test. her little machine did a great job
08:23 PM Eric__: I have a mayline portable drafting board with parallel bar and can't find out how to re-string it
08:24 PM Eric__: They only have re-stringing instructions for boards that are larger than mine, which is 24"
08:25 PM Eric__: I guess I shouldn't have waited so long after everyone else stopped using paper for drafting
08:30 PM roycroft: i have a drafting arm in storage in my shop
08:30 PM roycroft: it's pretty huge
08:31 PM roycroft: and i have a whole drawer full of scales for it
08:31 PM roycroft: but i haven't used it in like 25 years
08:32 PM roycroft: it's not the string type - it has two sets of parallel arms to keep things square
08:34 PM roycroft: somewhat like this, but a lot bigger:
08:34 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/271731708362
08:34 PM JavaBean: sounds like something that would be easy-ish-er to make at home than a string type
08:34 PM roycroft: iirc the table i used for it was about 1m x 2.5m
08:34 PM roycroft: which is why i packed it away
08:34 PM roycroft: i don't have anough room for a ginormous drafting table
08:35 PM roycroft: i bet if i set it up again i could do a lot of work faster manually than using cad software though
08:36 PM Eric__: I always wanted one of those drafting machines like that but no space
08:36 PM roycroft: after i spent some time getting reacquainted with it, of course
08:36 PM roycroft: i should ebay mine
08:36 PM Eric__: didn't have space for one in our lab either
08:36 PM roycroft: i bet i could get $500 for it, with all the scales
08:37 PM roycroft: it might take a year to sell
08:37 PM roycroft: but that's a year that it would be collecting dust anyway
08:37 PM Eric__: I never saw different scales
08:37 PM roycroft: they're just like architecture/engineering triangular scales
08:37 PM Eric__: There are a lot of the arms sitting in storage
08:37 PM Eric__: people got rid of the tables
08:38 PM roycroft: yup
08:38 PM roycroft: the local university book store still sells scales for the arms
08:38 PM roycroft: it has a major architectural college
08:38 PM roycroft: for the heads, i should say
08:38 PM roycroft: the scales don't attach to the arms
08:38 PM Eric__: all the architects I knew had a mayline
08:40 PM Eric__: I wonder how many drafting machines there are left at penn state, not very many
08:41 PM Eric__: the one we had in our lab 20 years ago was from when they were disposing of them
08:42 PM Eric__: statler has a parallel bar board with a rotating set of arms on it. Looks nice
08:42 PM Eric__: I need a really thin wire rope to fix my mayline, the wire broke
08:44 PM Eric__: can get a new board for less than they want for the cable
08:50 PM Eric__: "stainless steel wire for grind" whatever that means
08:52 PM Eric__: not sure bicycle cables are flexible enough
09:05 PM jdh: they are short
09:08 PM Eric__: this only has to be about 6' long. I guess I could go try it
09:09 PM Eric__: they used to sell really flexible shift cables, that would work but I don't think I have one
09:44 PM roycroft: it was 29 degrees on the coast today
09:44 PM roycroft: that's extremely hot, even for july/august
09:45 PM roycroft: and it got up to 31 here
09:45 PM roycroft: yesterday's high was 21
09:46 PM roycroft: it looks like we tied the record high for the day
09:48 PM roycroft: and 31 again on the morrow
09:48 PM JavaBean: and overmorrow?
09:50 PM roycroft: 30 on the overmorrow
09:50 PM roycroft: we're having a heat wave
09:50 PM roycroft: a tropical heat wave
09:50 PM roycroft: the temperature's rising, it isn't surprising
09:50 PM roycroft: she certainly can, can-can
09:50 PM JavaBean: just because you are old, doesn't mean you are in minnesota
09:51 PM roycroft: keep in mind that i don't talk fahrenheit
09:51 PM JavaBean: keep in mind you started quoting "Grumpy Old Men"
09:52 PM JavaBean: which was based in Minnesota, USA
09:52 PM roycroft: i haven't seen that
09:52 PM JavaBean: lol
09:52 PM roycroft: the irving berlin lyrics?
09:52 PM JavaBean: its the "song that starts the movie"
09:52 PM Tom_L: Eric__, what about heavy kevlar fishing line? too flexible?
09:52 PM JavaBean: bbl
09:53 PM roycroft: oh
09:53 PM roycroft: mayhap i should watch it
09:53 PM roycroft: sounds like i might enjoy it
09:53 PM roycroft: i just happen to like show tunes
09:54 PM Tom_L: Eric__, you can also get bulk bike cables
09:55 PM Tom_L: i've done that in the past
10:04 PM Eric__: Tom_L, can't decide if 1/16" will work, that seems to be a very popular size of wire rope
10:05 PM Eric__: 1mm would probably work better, but it's not as common
10:05 PM Tom_L: what if it was coated wire?
10:06 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Strand-Stainless-Steel-Bead-Stringing/dp/B00496R3BA
10:07 PM Tom_L: for stringing beads?
10:07 PM Tom_L: may be too thin i dunno
10:07 PM Eric__: I feel like the coating would come off sooner rather than later
10:08 PM Eric__: it goes around some 1" diameter pulleys
10:09 PM Tom_L: probably so
10:09 PM Tom_L: that amazon stuff may not be coated
10:09 PM Tom_L: may be too soft too
10:10 PM Tom_L: fine strands so it's flexible
10:12 PM JavaBean: yoy... i didn't even get to finish eating this "medicin" before it started working
10:15 PM Eric__: current wire is 1/32"
10:16 PM JavaBean: might take a bit of tensioning to get 1/16" wire down to 1/32"
10:17 PM roycroft: just take out your pocket knife and whittle it down to size
10:17 PM Tom_L: quite a bit
10:17 PM JavaBean: still, just a bit
10:17 PM Tom_L: yeah that bead wire is about half that too so too small
10:18 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-steel-wire-rope-0-039/dp/B06XKDLY76/ref=pd_lpo_469_t_1/141-6238301-7179803?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B06XKDLY76&pd_rd_r=35e0effb-f646-49e7-9977-d53323a7f466&pd_rd_w=KuGRt&pd_rd_wg=YmucA&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=M638ABXS8300SFWMH08T&psc=1&refRID=M638ABXS8300SFWMH08T
10:19 PM Tom_L: if it breaks again you'll have some left over :)
10:20 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/DGOL-Stainless-Steel-Diameter-Sleeves/dp/B07TX57Q9X/ref=pd_lpo_469_t_0/141-6238301-7179803?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07TX57Q9X&pd_rd_r=35e0effb-f646-49e7-9977-d53323a7f466&pd_rd_w=KuGRt&pd_rd_wg=YmucA&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=M638ABXS8300SFWMH08T&psc=1&refRID=M638ABXS8300SFWMH08T
10:23 PM Eric__: mcmaster has it, but their shipping is a lot more than amazon
10:24 PM Eric__: I'm ordering that 5/128" stuff
10:24 PM JavaBean: that isn't 1/32
10:25 PM JavaBean: won't it change the scales?
10:25 PM Tom_L: he indicated 1mm was closer?
10:26 PM Tom_L: i thought
10:27 PM JavaBean: 5/128 is closer to 1/32 than 1mm(1/25.4)
10:27 PM JavaBean: 4/128 would be 1/32
10:29 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Marine-Grade-Stainless-Steel-Sleeves/dp/B07GRSTSRC/ref=pd_lpo_328_t_2/141-6238301-7179803?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07GRSTSRC&pd_rd_r=d8d04dfe-1bc9-4799-91e9-11dce5303efd&pd_rd_w=42vdZ&pd_rd_wg=ZTGmn&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=YWEKN6DN8MFN13P79NAE&psc=1&refRID=YWEKN6DN8MFN13P79NAE
10:30 PM Eric__: the wire just keeps the bar parallel
10:30 PM Tom_L: i bet either one of those would do
10:30 PM Eric__: 1/32 is .86mm
10:30 PM Eric__: so 1mm should work fine
10:31 PM Eric__: 7 bundles of 7 wires should be pretty flexible
10:32 PM Eric__: it's wired in a z pattern, as the bar moves up or down, the z gets more like a 7
10:33 PM Eric__: probably doesn't work well for bigger bars
