01:01 AM Deejay: moin
01:23 AM lag: Good morning every-people
01:23 AM lag: Very quick question (hopefully) for y'all
01:24 AM lag: Can I run the latest release on a ThinkPad X61?
01:32 AM lag: I read this on the forum: "X60 has a parallel port on the docking station, will run any Linuxcnc ISO, only Stretch version with PreemptRT will have unusable latency."
01:32 AM lag: Does that mean the latest image will not work on the X60?
01:33 AM CaptHindsight: lag: an old post
01:33 AM lag: It's an old laptop :)
01:34 AM CaptHindsight: lag: are you trying to software step using the LPT port?
01:34 AM lag: That would be the plan, yes
01:35 AM lag: I'm trying to avoid paying hundreds of £££ on an external card
01:35 AM lag: I have an X61 with a docking station already - it looks like these laptops have been used in the past
01:36 AM CaptHindsight: the new 2.8 might work, you'll have to test using the Live version
01:37 AM lag: I'll do that - thank you
01:37 AM CaptHindsight: the problem with laptops is the design and the BIOS
01:37 AM lag: So I hear
01:37 AM lag: But as long as all of the PM and modems etc, it should work ?
01:37 AM CaptHindsight: real time and power management are two opposites
01:37 AM CaptHindsight: maybe
01:37 AM lag: *are turned off
01:37 AM CaptHindsight: won't cost you much to test
01:38 AM lag: Right, I'll do that today
02:35 AM lag: Jitter of 1,100,000 - that's good right? ;)
02:37 AM XXCoder: 1,100,100 patick time? hell yes heh
02:38 AM XXCoder: ;)
02:47 AM lag: Kstn
02:47 AM lag: Oh wow! crazy moment!
02:47 AM lag: Is the latency test valid when running a live ISO?
02:48 AM XXCoder: think so?
02:50 AM lag: I'm down to 600,000 with all of the maximum performances enabled and PM disabled
02:50 AM XXCoder: turn off power management stuff
02:51 AM XXCoder: that will get it down a bit but i dont think that compyuter is good enough
02:51 AM XXCoder: is it a laptop?
02:52 AM lag: PM == Power Management
02:53 AM lag: Yes, it's an X61
02:53 AM lag: Apparently it has been used in the past
02:53 AM XXCoder: oh lol ok
02:53 AM XXCoder: using hardware that generates signal seperately it matters less
02:53 AM XXCoder: like MESA
02:54 AM lag: MESA is very expensive where I am
02:54 AM XXCoder: but if you plan to use serial and breakout board, and drivers you will need better latency
02:54 AM XXCoder: ex[ense due to what? for usa, one of sellers is here, MESA can be say $120 or something
02:55 AM lag: Plus shipping, plus import fees
02:56 AM lag: XXCoder: Who is the seller?
02:57 AM XXCoder: jt though he may be unable to ship to where you are
03:01 AM lag: I guess that's one of; JT-Shop JT-Cave JT-Shop2 JT[m] - maybe he can ping me when he wakes up? :)
03:01 AM lag: XXCoder: Does he have a website/
03:01 AM lag: ?*
03:01 AM XXCoder: yeah unfortunately i dont have url
03:02 AM XXCoder: he should be here in 2 or 3 hours
03:06 AM lag: Sure, thanks
03:06 AM lag: Is there a list of known supported H/W anywhere?
03:06 AM XXCoder: not really, yours being sky high is wonder to behold
03:06 AM lag: If I were to eventually give-up and get a new (old) PC?
03:06 AM XXCoder: i thought my old laptop 500,000 was insane
03:07 AM XXCoder: my 15 year old pac has 24,000
03:07 AM lag: I am to impress
03:08 AM lag: aim*
03:08 AM lag: Jeeze, my typing today is not great!
03:08 AM XXCoder: certainly impressive yes lol
03:24 AM CaptHindsight: lag: laptops are typically poor for software stepping
03:24 AM XXCoder: m one who said laptop not lag. thoiugh might have said so earlier
03:24 AM CaptHindsight: lag: did you kill all possible power management settings in the BIOS, along with killing virtualization, speed stepping, etc
03:25 AM XXCoder: ah thinkpad yep thats a laptop
03:25 AM lag: I think I left virtualisation on
03:25 AM CaptHindsight: killit
03:25 AM lag: Will do
03:26 AM CaptHindsight: how many core cpu?
03:26 AM lag: Dual Core
03:26 AM lag: 2GHz
03:26 AM lag: HDD DMA (on/off)?
03:27 AM CaptHindsight: try both
03:27 AM lag: Kill speed-step you say?
03:29 AM CaptHindsight: yes
03:30 AM lag: Okay, done - rebooting
03:30 AM CaptHindsight: https://mesaus.com/product/7i96/ $119.00
03:31 AM CaptHindsight: lag: no old desktops where you are?
03:34 AM lag: I'm sure there are, but finding one with an in-built parallel port is proving tricky
03:34 AM XXCoder: capt is that jt store?
03:35 AM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: yes
03:35 AM XXCoder: thanks. saved for next time
03:35 AM CaptHindsight: lag: PCI/e LPT cards are $10 here
03:38 AM lag: Ah, do PCI cards work well?
03:38 AM lag: I thought it had to be on-board/native
03:42 AM CaptHindsight: they work fine
04:29 AM lag: Okay, so I have an old PC that's giving me 25,000
04:30 AM lag: Are there any settings in the PC BIOS that might bring that down further?
04:30 AM XXCoder: thats quite good
04:31 AM XXCoder: it has good gpu?
04:31 AM XXCoder: good gpu tend to bother cpu less so latency gets bit better
04:31 AM XXCoder: any gpu would do as long as its not embedded or super cheap card
04:32 AM XXCoder: any card that used to be $200 in its era heh
04:42 AM lag: Nvidia Gforce 6 (NV43) by the looks of it
04:42 AM XXCoder: 129 to 149 usd in 2004
04:42 AM XXCoder: good enough
04:43 AM XXCoder: card right? not embedded
04:43 AM lag: Yes PCI-e
04:44 AM lag: Okay, I just tweaked a few extra options
04:44 AM lag: 10,000 now
04:44 AM lag: Happy days!
04:44 AM lag: Although that's no-load
04:44 AM XXCoder: open HD video
04:44 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDfjXj5EGqI
04:45 AM lag: If I open 10 web browsers at the same time I goes up to 40,000 - but that's exceptional circumstances I guess
04:45 AM XXCoder: huge areas is constantly changing. it hits cpu pretty good. then you open some 3d program like glxgear, 3 or 4 of em
05:28 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:28 AM XXCoder: hey jt
05:41 AM jymmmm: morning
05:41 AM XXCoder: hey the j
05:42 AM jymmmm: Hi XXCoder
05:52 AM jymmmm: FREE movies/tv like crackle... http://tubitv.com/
06:14 AM Tom_L: morning
06:21 AM jymmmm: Morning Tom_L
06:23 AM XXCoder: hey
06:33 AM jymmmm: I kinda like the bathroom, but a wood stove in a van??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIK5kVJVrS8
06:34 AM XXCoder: "belive" no.
06:34 AM jymmmm: And how the heck do you rotate the front bench seats?
06:34 AM XXCoder: i remember one that has botj driver and passager can rotate, though driver is locked out of park? been a long while
06:35 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: you gotta see the video to understand what I'm asking
06:35 AM XXCoder: i cant, handcam is too much for me
06:35 AM XXCoder: or give me time link
06:36 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: https://youtu.be/wIK5kVJVrS8?t=61
06:37 AM XXCoder: interesting
06:37 AM XXCoder: detch rotate and reconnect?
06:40 AM jymmmm: I dont think detach for safety reasons
06:42 AM jymmmm: half rotate the bench, rotated drivers seat, full rotate the bench?
06:43 AM XXCoder: back is almost touching console
06:43 AM XXCoder: its too close to rotate
06:43 AM jymmmm: slide adjustment?
06:43 AM XXCoder: possib;e
06:43 AM XXCoder: though i could easily remove driver seat on my old car
06:44 AM jymmmm: sounds like a pita though
06:44 AM XXCoder: maybe
06:44 AM XXCoder: if very skilled on engineering, id make it auto rotate
06:44 AM jymmmm: But, it's hard to tell anything "real" in vanlife videos as they glamorize them so much.
06:44 AM XXCoder: but linked to parking brake so it can work only when parked mode
06:45 AM XXCoder: you dont want to be suddenly watching rear
06:45 AM XXCoder: going 60 mph
06:45 AM jymmmm: heh
06:45 AM XXCoder: i once suddenly was watching my car ceiling when going 60 mph
06:45 AM XXCoder: chair broke
06:45 AM jymmmm: Oooops
06:45 AM XXCoder: i had to take steering wheel and carefully pull on it without turning
06:46 AM XXCoder: it was scary af
06:46 AM jymmmm: I kinda want a 4x4 sprinter (if they exist), but I think the mileage would be too much.
06:46 AM jymmmm: Oh I bet, can't even hit the brakes either.
06:46 AM XXCoder: if you has money could do engine and tranny replace at once
06:47 AM XXCoder: thats big bite off wear issue
06:47 AM XXCoder: whats left is brakes, battery and cleaning off rust and paint for basic
06:47 AM jymmmm: I found a 2017 with 60K miles for $34K
06:47 AM JT-Cave: https://glaserhitec.com/product/1-2-oval-bowl-gouge-10v/
06:48 AM JT-Cave: wow a bowl gouge made from CPM10V
06:48 AM XXCoder: lathe tool?
06:48 AM XXCoder: i cant read most of that site lol
06:49 AM JT-Cave: yea and yea the colors suck
06:50 AM XXCoder: i sent this messag
06:50 AM XXCoder: Your text is way too thin font and too light gray. I canst even read what I am typing. I suggest largert and thicker font, and black or very dark gray for text color.
06:51 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: CTRL+ to zoom in, CTRL- to zoom out, CTRL0 (zero) to reset
06:51 AM XXCoder: that is not a real solution
06:52 AM jymmmm: yes it is, you are goin blind like the rest of us
06:52 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: Or, just set a MINIMUM FONT SIZE in your browser
06:53 AM XXCoder: so I have to work around bad ui?
06:53 AM XXCoder: no.
06:53 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: Sadly, yes you do. No abount of complaining is going to change that
06:54 AM XXCoder: to me bad ui says "no, we do not want you to shop here"
06:54 AM jymmmm: amount*
06:54 AM XXCoder: and I read it as that
06:54 AM XXCoder: and not buy there
06:54 AM jymmmm: the light grey on white does suck though
06:55 AM XXCoder: its worse for me
06:55 AM jymmmm: enable high contrast mode?
06:55 AM XXCoder: nah proper compliant sites is fine to me
06:56 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: You're new Drawf name(s) is/are bitchy and Scratchy!
06:56 AM XXCoder: yay i am my own twin!
06:57 AM jymmmm: lol
07:02 AM jymmmm: Is there a "locktight equiv" for brass gas fittings?
07:05 AM jymmmm: OH, Locktite 577 is for gas
07:06 AM jymmmm: holy crap... 50ml $23
07:06 AM jymmmm: "medium strength"
07:35 AM likevinyl is now known as birrita
07:36 AM birrita is now known as likevinyl
08:19 AM Loetmichel: hehe, just designing a overseas box for a 42" monitor. copied the whole construction part into the cad 6 times to be "molds" for the wooden box... get about 2 fps now in 3d CAD... that has been an error to copy every screw and innard :-)
08:22 AM XXCoder: lol
08:44 AM JavaBean: Loetmichel: good news, the 3090 reviews dropped today... you might be able to get 4 fps if you buy one. just make sure your room has a very good "supplimental" airconditioner. the fuzzy donut of death gets the card useing a bit over 400watts at 1440p
09:37 AM Loetmichel: hehe
09:40 AM jymmmm: fuzzy donut heater?
12:25 PM Jaatinen is now known as ej
12:25 PM ej: Hi!
12:27 PM ej: I'm running 2.7.15 and trying to get millkins (one contributed component for xy skew correction). It was working awhile ago with my previous setup, but now I can't get it working. Compiles ok, starts ok, but no y movement related to x movement. I would appreciate any input to this.
01:26 PM snakedGT is now known as snaked
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: other than the polymer spider flexing I though that lovejoy coupling had no lash
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: I just got one that has ~1/2 step of play unloaded
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: just under 1 deg
02:10 PM CaptHindsight: the spider should have a slight interference fit, this one don't
03:33 PM Deejay: gn8
04:01 PM FinboySlick: CaptHindsight: Maybe it dried up ;)
04:38 PM FinboySlick: https://imgur.com/gallery/a16Nw48 <-- Taking chocolate too far.
04:40 PM Tom_L: i didn't know that was possible
05:22 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.amazon.com/Stepper-Integrate-Position-Encoder-Control/dp/B01MFA87KI
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: someone in the comments mentioned daisy chaining these
05:32 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/57HS76D8EIS-P-nema23-servo-closed-loop_60836804153.html
06:36 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4PshKtwpqs ^^
06:39 PM veegee: Just for fun, I pushed my forklift forward by hand on the pavement (total mass: about 9,000kg)
06:40 PM veegee: The bearings are like new even though they're probably 30 years old
06:40 PM veegee: So shouldn't be hard to push a huge machine on rollers if the rollers are all aligned properly on smooth concrete floors
06:40 PM veegee: Now the challenge is to align them perfectly somehow
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: just don't get between it and something else with lots of mass or on the lower end of an incline
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: it's like trying to stock a train
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: stock/stop
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: this auto-correct is terrible
06:47 PM FinboySlick: veegee: Lock the wheels at about 45° so you can push it in a circle and you'll become big and strong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TRUeUMYYis
06:53 PM veegee: The problem is aligning them
08:35 PM jymmmm: Will annodize fade out after years?
08:38 PM roycroft: many anodizing colors do fade over time
08:39 PM XXCoder: yeah as pigiment either decay or break down under light
08:43 PM jymmmm: Hmmm, ok. I think I might have founs something that won't fade... https://www.anoplate.com/news-and-events/why-does-anodize-fade/ about half way down the page
08:43 PM jymmmm: found*
08:43 PM jymmmm: what about powder coat?
09:00 PM roycroft: there are a lot of different types of power coat, but there are film finished that do not fade much, while almost all dyes do
09:00 PM roycroft: finishes
09:01 PM jymmmm: can powder cost withstand being burried under snow year after year?
09:07 PM norias: soo...
09:07 PM norias: i learned that in a different context CNC stands for "consenual non-consent"
09:07 PM norias: that was a confusing conversation, at first
09:16 PM roycroft: it could also stand for "create nice chocolates"
09:18 PM norias: it could
09:19 PM roycroft: and they could be created using a cnc candy making machine
09:20 PM norias: aye
09:20 PM norias: i found some cheap little plc's out there
09:20 PM norias: learning to program plc's is on my list of things to do
09:28 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm> Will annodize fade out after years?
09:28 PM roycroft: some anodizing dyes will fade after a couple afternoons in the sun
09:28 PM CaptHindsight: Type-II color anodize is typically done with cheap dyes that break down from UV
09:29 PM CaptHindsight: color anodize may be done with nanopigments that are milled to <30nm
09:29 PM CaptHindsight: these will fade over a much longer time, many decades, hundreds of years
09:31 PM CaptHindsight: anodize pores in traditional type-II color anodize of aluminum are on the right https://imgur.com/9CdHspn
09:31 PM Tom_L: norias, give fpga's a go
09:32 PM norias: Tom_L: definitely on the list. why do you suggest them?
09:32 PM Tom_L: mesa uses them for one
09:32 PM CaptHindsight: powder coat is most often pigment vs dye
09:33 PM norias: Tom_L: right on.
09:33 PM roycroft: correct
09:33 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: powder coats can easily withstand being under snow for a year
09:33 PM roycroft: and as a general rule, pigments are more colorfast than dyes
09:34 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: depends on the type of polymers used, epoxy will crack and fade from UV exposure but last for decades away from UV
09:34 PM Tom_L: norias, i messed with them a bit a long time ago then recently i got a newer one to play with
09:35 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: if exposed to UV and snow then polyester or better are urethanes
09:35 PM Tom_L: norias, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVRRtBdOOvg
09:36 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8lezpJhfAo
09:38 PM norias: Tom_L: looks like they start around $100
09:38 PM norias: sound right?
09:38 PM Tom_L: i found that one cheaper but it was hard to find
09:45 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: ok, thanks =)
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: what materials would be be powder coating and burying in the snow?
09:46 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: aluminum plate
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: much depends on the bond between the powder and the substrate
09:47 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: what color?
09:48 PM jymmmm: black all over, then a colored logo, and some (probably) white text
09:48 PM CaptHindsight: blacks can last forever
09:49 PM jymmmm: orange, yellow, green, blue logo
09:49 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.amazon.com/Stepper-Integrate-Position-Encoder-Control/dp/B01MFA87KI runs really cool
09:49 PM Tom_itx: norias, https://www.kimstarw.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=305902
09:50 PM CaptHindsight: the motor is just over room temp, the controller on the back is a little warmer +20 deg over ambient
09:50 PM CaptHindsight: really quiet
09:53 PM unterhaus: trying to figure out how to do a google search for driving a bridgeport spindle with a servomotor
09:53 PM Tom_L: norias, mine came with several examples
09:53 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, how big a servo?
09:53 PM Tom_L: or bldc?
09:56 PM unterhaus: my mill only has a 2hp induction motor
09:56 PM unterhaus: I have a 2hp servomotor
09:57 PM Tom_L: but you want a way to drive it?
09:57 PM unterhaus: more just thinking about how to integrate it physically
09:58 PM unterhaus: someone on the ML had done it with a pico system
09:59 PM unterhaus: probably wouldn't be too hard, but I was curious to see pictures
10:00 PM Tom_L: pico linuxcnc boards?
10:00 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus: what type of servo motor? DC brushes, BLDC, AC, 3ph etc?
10:00 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus: what do you have for a controller?
10:01 PM unterhaus: I have stmbls and the one motor I was thinking about has a matching drive. API controls
10:02 PM unterhaus: I think the people putting dc motors on their bridgeport don't have the variable speed head
10:03 PM unterhaus: If I did go through with it, might be easier just to lose the variable speed mechanism
10:05 PM unterhaus: Tom_L there was a guy that was having noise problems on an encoder. Pretty sure the system was a bridgeport with a servo spindle
10:06 PM Tom_L: that could be anything
10:07 PM unterhaus: I don't care about his problems, I think the solved it
10:07 PM unterhaus: thread went on forever
10:07 PM Tom_L: heh
11:50 PM veegee: damn
11:50 PM veegee: A second hydraulic hose burst on the forklift. I better replace the pressure relief valve
11:50 PM veegee: The hose came right out of its crimped connector
11:52 PM veegee: CaptHindsight regarding the randomly seizing fork spreaders, I disconnected the hoses and quick connectors from the cylinders and tried to manually spread them with a mechanical jack
11:52 PM veegee: CaptHindsight it worked fine until it felt like it hit a springy wall
11:53 PM XXCoder: interesting. you sure its not hitting something? or something bent it cant pass?
11:53 PM veegee: And then I couldn't spread them any further. But it wasn't a hard stop. It felt more like a springy stop, any idea what could cause that?
11:54 PM veegee: XXCoder I can't imagine what it could possibly hit. It's such a simple mechanism. It has 4 T-slot like rails and 2 cylinders to spread/narrow the forks
11:54 PM XXCoder: well springy is what made me think of bemt. it might be very small bend
11:54 PM XXCoder: strunk to minium size and look for rub marks?
11:56 PM veegee: Hmm that sounds possible
11:57 PM veegee: But I've definitely actuated the fork positioners fully back and forth multiple times before
11:57 PM veegee: It got "stuck" randomly at random positions and when it got stuck during operation, it felt like the relief valve opened immediately and it wasn't springy
11:58 PM veegee: that is, there was no oscillation along the cylinder axis indicating some kind of spring
11:59 PM veegee: This feels like one of those things that can't be solved without disassembling the whole damn thing
11:59 PM veegee: And it's hard to see clearly because it's not just a fork spreader. There's a solid fork rotator behind it. The whole front end is very heavy
