02:46 AM Loetmichel: mornin'
02:46 AM Loetmichel: hehe, the fifth optical identical chinese Displayport cable all of out of the same delivery i solder a new plug on... the fifth different colour coding and shielding inside. how do they make those? by guessing what goes where? :-)
03:45 AM gloops: first look at CAD etc for months...brain fog

08:49 AM jymmmm: morning
10:03 AM unterhaus_: my family leaves the google music playing when they leave, so I changed it to Death Grip radio
10:04 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: Google music is going away.
10:04 AM jymmmm: If they have any music up there, they should probably download it all.
10:05 AM skunkworks: andypugh: cool video!
10:06 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: Being replaced by YouTube Music within the next 30 days or so
10:06 AM unterhaus_: we just listen to it via a google home mini
10:06 AM unterhaus_: no uploaded music
10:07 AM unterhaus_: it's like a radio that spies on you
10:07 AM unterhaus_: okay google play death grip radio still plays something from google play music
10:08 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: Google Inc, the commercial division of the NSA
10:09 AM unterhaus_: the amazon device I have recognizes "alexa" with large amounts of background noise. I'm impressed and terrified
10:10 AM unterhaus_: I don't quite understand how they can afford to upload audio at the rates required from millions of devices
10:13 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: They don't upload voice, all that audio is processed in your device and only "text" data is sent
10:14 AM unterhaus_: Is that true? I know they have gotten in trouble for uploading more than they say they will
10:14 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: Did you read the TOS when you clicked on "agree" ?
10:15 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: Roku is the worse one that I read.
10:15 AM jymmmm: you agree to allow them to record 24/7
10:17 AM unterhaus_: not my device, not my account
10:17 AM unterhaus_: it's a pita to find an article on how the things work.
10:19 AM jymmmm: unterhaus_: Did you read the TOS though?
10:20 AM unterhaus_: nobody reads the tos
10:21 AM unterhaus_: I know people have gotten in trouble for things they say that they didn't preface with "okay google"
10:23 AM unterhaus_: my understanding is the only voice recognition on the device is to indicate that you have said okay google or alexa as appropriage
10:23 AM unterhaus_: and I wonder if they don't sometimes upload that if they aren't sure
11:25 AM roycroft: well the air quality continues to vary here, but it's trending cleaner, for sure
11:25 AM roycroft: aqi is 135 right now, and while i can still detect some smoke, breathing has been a lot easier since last night
11:56 AM CaptHindsight: south park alexa, i wonder how much you can troll those devices before they block you
12:41 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: MAybe grab some gangsta hip hop and mix in "alexa", "siri", whatever, and find out?
02:39 PM t4nk_freenode: https://postimg.cc/gallery/hVWjLn8 :b
02:39 PM t4nk_freenode: like done by rats
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: 3d part nesting https://imgur.com/ap5F4LS
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://github.com/Jack000/SVGnest nests SVG's but I don'tthink in 3D only 2d
03:02 PM t4nk_freenode: probably gonna need more filament than a roll can hold
03:03 PM * JT-Shop spends 30 minutes turning all the icon colors in tbird to white so he doesn't have to look at the stupid icons which are super distracting
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: who still prints in 3D with filament?
03:03 PM JT-Shop: and no use what so ever
03:03 PM t4nk_freenode: CaptHindsight, then use what?
03:04 PM t4nk_freenode: I just got my filament printer too .. so.. I
03:04 PM t4nk_freenode: and the ppl over @reprap?
03:04 PM t4nk_freenode: and the rest of the world?
03:06 PM t4nk_freenode: and billions of little africans, in a year or 25 from now, when they inherit our old hardware?
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: t4nk_freenode: real 3d printers like SLS, SLA etc
03:08 PM t4nk_freenode: darnit, I've been meaning to look up those terms ;)
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: assuming 3D printing means CNC glue guns is like saying that being sick means having cancer
03:12 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, I might better have gotten an SLA printer, in hindsight, ... thought about it, but the small build volumes on the ones I could afford put me off. Though at that point I didn't really know of the difference between sla and fdm
03:13 PM t4nk_freenode: and I gues SLS then is the most promising for durable parts
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: SLA 21" x 12" https://imgur.com/zvxoHUT
03:14 PM t4nk_freenode: is that a diy?
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: SLS, SLA, Jet Fusion all make durable parts
03:15 PM CaptHindsight: if you pay me for some then no, it's not DIY
03:16 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight: Hey. Have you ever brazed a cast iron exhaust manifold?
03:16 PM t4nk_freenode: anything you can do.. :b
03:16 PM Deejay: gn8
03:16 PM t4nk_freenode: gnite Deejay
03:17 PM CaptHindsight: miss0r: never brazed
03:17 PM miss0r: damn. I just found out that my weld on the manifold I did, did *NOT* hold up.
03:17 PM miss0r: it is welded perfectly to the part that war previously broken off. But Apparently it is not only bonded to that, not the rest of the manifold
03:18 PM miss0r: No wonder I had a strange sound from down there :D
03:19 PM CaptHindsight: gives me thoughts of overhead welding on exhausts, and trying not to get lava on yourself
03:22 PM miss0r: :D
03:23 PM miss0r: a small collection of burn wounds caused by molten steel dripping down you, is called a Ford rash around here(mostly for welding a rusty undercarrige) :D
03:23 PM Tom_L: miss0r, preheat the manifold, sandbag it with hot sandbags and weld it
03:24 PM miss0r: I did it with an old fashion fire blanket to keep in the heat, and then I heated it all with a torch before welding
03:24 PM miss0r: apparently I didn't do it well enough.
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: reminds me I have to replace my muffler, the back end popped off like opening a can
03:24 PM Tom_L: oven
03:24 PM miss0r: tom_L what temperature would you reccomend I heat it to?
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: weld it when the engine is hot
03:25 PM DaViruz: weld it with the engine running!
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: way to be sure it is sealed
03:26 PM miss0r: hehe
03:26 PM Tom_L: miss0r, hotter than last time?
03:26 PM miss0r: tom_L: mayhaps
03:27 PM miss0r: I'm thinking about silver soldering it or brazing it
03:27 PM miss0r: that way I can see it flow better than using the mig welder
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: how big is the crack?
03:28 PM Tom_L: What we do is called 'oven fusion cast iron welding. The heads and blocks are slowly heated to the proper temperature in large ovens and are then welded with a torch and cast iron welding rod and flux. When the welding is done, they are slowly cooled overnight to avoid new cracks and to relieve internal stress in the welded item.
03:28 PM Tom_L: from a head repair shop
03:28 PM DaViruz: i have come to really like brass brazing for cast iron repair, if you can tolerate the lower working temperature it's quite pleasant to work with
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: does it also work for iron engine blocks?
03:29 PM Tom_L: you'll probably get another stress crack if you do
03:29 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, the on around here afik just did heads
03:29 PM Tom_L: one*
03:29 PM miss0r: DaViruz: I can tolerate it. I just wonder how hot the exhaust gets while in service
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: rarely hot enough to glow
03:30 PM Tom_L: aparently you can do blocks that way too
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: get out your thermometer
03:31 PM Tom_L: Antique, obsolete engines, and parts are sometimes hard. or impossible, to find. In all cases, welded heads and blocks are as good as new and and many times they are even stronger than the original casting design.
03:32 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight: it'll be a while: https://imgur.com/a/lJLmvFI
03:33 PM miss0r: Tom_L: So what do you think about brazing such a part? go/nogo?
03:33 PM miss0r: I've found this: https://www.sanistaal.com/da/produkter/vaerktoej/gas-og-loddevaerktoej/loddematerialer/c-40.110.15/1107564/castolin-18xfc-messing-lodtraad-flusbelagt-messing-loddetraad?variantId=1107564
03:34 PM miss0r: on a danish site, which I do alot of dealing with. It says it will work with cast materials
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: miss0r: why I was working on the sand casting printer, remake iron parts
03:35 PM DaViruz: i've only brazed one exhaist manifold, and that was on an old ferguson tractor with very low power output and cool exhaust
03:35 PM DaViruz: but it worked well there.
03:35 PM miss0r: if/when you get that going, I would like to place an order
03:35 PM DaViruz: exhaust*
03:36 PM miss0r: DaViruz: One could argue that a land rover is nothing more than an english tractor
03:36 PM DaViruz: i'd argue against that
03:36 PM DaViruz: tractors are usually reasonably reliable
03:36 PM miss0r: hehe touché
03:37 PM miss0r: The problem is, getting a new manifold for this model is quite close to impossible.
03:37 PM miss0r: it is, however, possible to get a set on ebay(used) and it will set you back $1000us
03:37 PM DaViruz: and is probably also cracked?
03:37 PM miss0r: So, I figured it wouldn't be a complete waste to spend an afternoon trying to fix it
03:38 PM miss0r: DaViruz: Quite possible. As they are infamous for doing so
03:38 PM miss0r: they are waaay too compact, due to space restrictions
03:39 PM miss0r: Ordering a set of those brazing rods. I will give this a chance
03:40 PM Tom_L: it's a slow process. heat it good and cool it slow
03:40 PM miss0r: Yeah, I think I will go read a bit, and then throw it in an oven
03:40 PM miss0r: (preferably a day when the misses is not at home :))
03:41 PM Tom_L: or eventually you'll have a brass manifold instead
03:41 PM miss0r: She made a hell of a fuss when I cleaned an old differential in the dishwasher... Woman, am I right?
03:41 PM miss0r: Tom_L. Sounds shiny. I have already deviced a plan of making a new manifold from stainless steel.
03:42 PM Tom_L: just do that and save your time
03:43 PM miss0r: rather. I am going to make a mandel, on which I will be mounting the flange that mounts to the head and the pipe union where it needs to be. Then I will go hand it to a much better welder than me(could be anyone, realy) and have him/her tie the ends together within the space allowed
03:44 PM miss0r: but for the time being, I will see if I cannot fix that manifold. because making that mandrel and the parts to bolt onto it will take time
03:45 PM miss0r: For now I will just go get in the shower, and hope the kids don't wake me up ever 30 minuts for the duration of the night... again..
03:47 PM miss0r: see you around
04:47 PM sync: miss0r: you will be easily able to braze a manifold
04:48 PM veegee: I have an old air compressor with a 3 phase motor that still runs well (got it for free)
04:48 PM veegee: I want to do some experiments with it like running it at 200% normal capacity. I don't care if it breaks
04:49 PM veegee: I want to see if I can water cool it by wrapping the cylinder with copper tube and thermal paste and pumping coolant through it
04:49 PM sync: your main limitation will be the motor, it'll easily burn up
04:49 PM veegee: I have bigger motors
04:50 PM veegee: it's a 2hp motor on the unit. I have a 10hp motor sitting doing nothing and a whole bunch of pulleys
04:50 PM veegee: and a VFD
04:50 PM veegee: it looks like a solid pump though, solid cast iron
04:50 PM Tom_L: veegee, been there done that: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/spindle_cooler/Cooler2.jpg
04:51 PM veegee: My CNC router has an actual water cooled spindle haha
04:51 PM veegee: But I have to find the right thermal paste that will handle temperatures around 120ÂșC
04:52 PM veegee: Or maybe submerge it in transformer cooling oil or something similar
04:53 PM veegee: that should also drastically reduce the noise
04:54 PM veegee: 3M Fluorinert/Novec fluids are also an option
05:06 PM andypugh: miss0r: If you are MIG welding cast iron then you are likely to have better luck with stainless welding wire. (non-magnetic stainless)
05:08 PM andypugh: Welding cast iron with mild steel, you get carbon diffusion into the weld from the iron, then as it cools it can become very hard and brittle. (and, also, it shrinks during the ferrite transition). stainless doesn’t do that.
05:08 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: thermal paste is for small thin spaces between surfaces, i.e., several microns
05:10 PM CaptHindsight: likely best way it to make a cooling block out of aluminum with copper tube to replace the fins for air cooling
05:11 PM CaptHindsight: http://web.mit.edu/imoyer/www/portfolio/absolutzero/coolblockasm.jpg
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: http://web.mit.edu/imoyer/www/portfolio/absolutzero/coolblock.html
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: http://web.mit.edu/imoyer/www/portfolio/absolutzero/peltierasm.html
05:12 PM JT-Shop: I always use special rods for cast iron...
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: you want as much surface to surface contact with little to no air between
05:13 PM veegee: yeah
05:18 PM robotustra: Tom_L, here?
05:19 PM robotustra: Tom_L, you told that you have lathe with treads on backplate?
05:22 PM CaptHindsight: http://web.mit.edu/imoyer/www/portfolio/index.html
05:24 PM robotustra: cool devices
05:25 PM robotustra: I finally got a spindle from 10" lathe and will adapt it for my bearings
05:25 PM _unreal_: nice
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: he's part of https://www.festoolproducts.com/shaper-tools-origin-handheld-cnc-router.html
05:27 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, it's a router for guys with both left arms?
05:27 PM robotustra: who cannot move the router in a streight line :)
05:27 PM robotustra: there is a simpler solution - make a jig :)
05:32 PM Tom_L: robotustra, yes
05:34 PM robotustra: Tom_L, do you do CCW turning?
05:35 PM Tom_L: some
05:35 PM robotustra: do you fix your backplate somehow or not ?
05:35 PM Tom_L: no
05:36 PM robotustra: hm
05:37 PM robotustra: I was thinking about some locknut
05:38 PM Tom_L: no need really
05:40 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22THREADED+1-10+BACKPLATE/ADAPTER+FOR+5%22%22+LATHE+CHUCKS+3900-3309&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLVT9c3NMzOMM7OKy-sesRowS3w8sc9YSn9SWtOXmPU5OIKzsgvd80rySypFJLmYoOyBKX4uVB18vxiFAjILyjNSSxSKCjKTylNLinuYGVaxGqvFOIR5Oro4uqiYKhraKDg5OjsHeDjGOKq7-jiGBDiGqTg5h-kYKqkpAAU9HBVcPYIdfYOVjC2NDDQNTY2sDzAOufjlqZDD_sOOh5gPX1t_a1Ny-ae5z7A2rf_xZY_7y49DT3AuvZi15WHK15Pus4IAM59zjLRAAAA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjijfecnezrAhVCWK0KHVkmA3QQlr4CegQIA
05:40 PM Tom_L: hAI
05:40 PM Tom_L: crap
05:41 PM Tom_L: https://tinyurl.com/y2c9bfk3
05:44 PM jymmmm: lol @ tom
05:44 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: dontcha just hate when that happens?
05:44 PM Tom_L: oh stop
05:45 PM Tom_L: :)
05:46 PM jymmmm: No I meant it, you goto copy this SIMPLE url, adn you get the entire world history
05:47 PM Tom_L: not my best work
05:47 PM jymmmm: hard to catch a lot of the time
05:47 PM Tom_L: trying to answer and do something else here too
05:47 PM robotustra: is there any store for lathe parts?
05:47 PM Tom_L: well sure
05:47 PM jymmmm: lathestore.com?
05:47 PM Tom_L: the 'Big Lathe Store;
05:48 PM robotustra: I need 1-7/8 - 20 tpi split nut
05:48 PM robotustra: for spindle
05:48 PM Tom_L: pretty fine for that big a thread
05:48 PM jymmmm: We gots your split nuts right here <in brooklyn accent>
05:49 PM Tom_L: this is ~1.6" x 24 http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Brass_cup/Brass_Cups5.jpg
05:49 PM robotustra: murican jokes does not work on canadians :)
05:49 PM Tom_L: yeah they have no sense of humor
05:49 PM jymmmm: robotustra: That's because you have the red green show -shrug-
05:50 PM _unreal_: I USE TO LOVE the red green show
05:50 PM _unreal_: damn they are old now
05:50 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200915_174431.jpg
05:50 PM skunkworks: poor emco
05:51 PM _unreal_: emco?
05:51 PM skunkworks: that was plunged to make it with a .25 width
05:51 PM robotustra: Tom_L, there is a nut for 16" lathe https://www.ebay.com/itm/South-Bend-16-Metal-Lathe-Spindle-Take-Up-Nut-and-Washer/193585591527
05:51 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: Nice, you got yout thingy to do outside hex now?
05:51 PM roycroft: i finally finished my first dovetail sockets
05:51 PM roycroft: that took almost six hours in total
05:51 PM roycroft: now for the other one
05:51 PM skunkworks: with a .020 radius. sure makes it so you can run the spindle faster
05:51 PM _unreal_: 6 hours for a dove tail WTF?
05:52 PM roycroft: it's a really big dovetail
05:52 PM roycroft: and it's a hounds tooth dovetail
05:52 PM roycroft: i've never cut a hounds tooth before
05:52 PM roycroft: but yeah, for "normal" dovetails it only takes a few minutes
05:52 PM robotustra: but I need this nut for 10" lathe, which is 1-7/8" 20 tpi
05:53 PM roycroft: you can make a nut on your lathe
05:54 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, what? no threads??
05:54 PM robotustra: yes, but it does not work yet :)
05:54 PM roycroft: _unreal_: i also chopped the first one out totally by hand
05:54 PM roycroft: i think i'm going to drill out most of the waste on the other one
05:54 PM roycroft: and that will probably save a least half the time
05:54 PM robotustra: roycroft, I have old nut but it's damaged a bit
05:55 PM roycroft: i just wanted to see how long it would take to do it totally by hand
05:55 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: just playing
05:55 PM Tom_L: i know
05:55 PM roycroft: and the answer is: way too long
05:57 PM robotustra: my workbench https://i.imgur.com/CtOE86p.jpg
05:57 PM robotustra: roycroft, did you finish yours?
05:58 PM roycroft: no
05:58 PM roycroft: but i'm getting close
05:58 PM roycroft: one more dovetail socket to cut, then i can fit the final pieces to the bench top
05:59 PM roycroft: at which point i can do the finishing work on the bench it self
05:59 PM robotustra: any varnish?
05:59 PM roycroft: and then i just have to refine the deadman and chop, and it will be all done
05:59 PM roycroft: my favorite finish is tried & true varnish oil, and that will work brilliantly for this bench project
06:00 PM roycroft: although i might use tried & true original on the top itself
06:00 PM roycroft: that's a mix of oil and beeswax
06:00 PM roycroft: i don't want the top to be shiny at all
06:00 PM roycroft: nor too smooth
06:01 PM robotustra: I cover my wooden undermachining bench with yacht lack
06:01 PM robotustra: just to protect from coolant if I'll ever use it
06:02 PM roycroft: that's not a concern for a wood joinery bench
06:03 PM roycroft: i guess i should get started on the other dovetail socket
06:09 PM robotustra: https://imgur.com/a/gyx0XMg
06:15 PM robotustra: will need to put metal cover anyway
06:28 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200915_182303.jpg
06:28 PM XXCoder: yo
06:29 PM TurBoss: hello!
06:37 PM _unreal_: making some adapters so I can mill other parts of my daughters mill
06:37 PM _unreal_: SIGH..
06:37 PM _unreal_: so many steps
06:37 PM _unreal_: for small parts
06:38 PM robotustra: _unreal_, what are you making?
06:43 PM _unreal_: a mini cnc machine for my daughter
06:46 PM robotustra: is it a joke?
06:49 PM _unreal_: a mini cnc machine https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C-fuAbumCqSQ0Zs6zVfMSxH7qZYv99aW/view?usp=sharing
06:49 PM _unreal_: it will have about a 6"x6" work area
06:50 PM robotustra: cool
06:52 PM robotustra: is it working already?
06:53 PM _unreal_: getting there
06:53 PM _unreal_: I still have a Z limit switch issue with the wireing :(
06:54 PM _unreal_: and I'm making the final Z parts to hold a pen, spindle, touch probe
06:54 PM _unreal_: so they can be swapped out
06:54 PM _unreal_: going to run grbl
06:54 PM _unreal_: simple for my daughter for learning
06:55 PM robotustra: hm, I also have to think how to install limit switches on my lathe
06:56 PM robotustra: and on axis Z particularly
06:56 PM robotustra: I got big ones but I think they are way too big
06:57 PM robotustra: as always, you can't think about small things and postpone them until it's too late to install
07:31 PM CaptHindsight: robotustra: that handheld router has near CNC precision since it has motors controlling the fine position of the spindle
07:32 PM CaptHindsight: i think the operator just has to be withing 10mm or so of the target position and it does the rest
07:32 PM CaptHindsight: withing/within
07:32 PM tiwake: which?
07:33 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.festoolproducts.com/shaper-tools-origin-handheld-cnc-router.html
07:33 PM CaptHindsight: SHAPER
07:46 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, yeah, I know, for drunk carpenters with shaking hands
07:58 PM CaptHindsight: robotustra: nah, drunk carpenters won't bother
07:59 PM CaptHindsight: even drunk flooring inspectors won't bother
08:00 PM CaptHindsight: robotustra: do you think a drunk bus driver on vacation might use one?
08:23 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, I think that this thing is overpriced
08:24 PM robotustra: I want a metal shaper
08:24 PM robotustra: don't know why, but I just want one small and table top
08:24 PM robotustra: of about 1 kW power
08:35 PM robotustra: how to know what cone size is in the spindle?
08:40 PM robotustra: hm, strange size, my spindle has 41 mm in diameter it's smaller than MT5 and bigger than MT4
08:40 PM robotustra: MT5 bigger diameter is 44 mm
08:48 PM XXCoder: the filter fan I made works very well
08:48 PM XXCoder: sides is darkening a little
08:48 PM robotustra: collects dust from air?
08:49 PM XXCoder: thats hardly the problem :) im at bad air region
08:49 PM XXCoder: it was 300 peak here
08:49 PM XXCoder: my sis reached 500 ow
08:50 PM robotustra: because of fires?
08:50 PM XXCoder: yah
08:50 PM robotustra: oregon?
08:50 PM XXCoder: my sis yeah
