12:13 AM t4nk_freenode: I posted some
12:19 AM t4nk_freenode: but I'll post some more later
01:25 AM Deejay: moin
02:17 AM htasta: hey hou, could someone help me with a spindle setup? I think the U V W are hooked up wrong, because when I press run it spins counter clockwise.
02:23 AM rs[m]: if thats an AC induction motor, swapping two of U V W will change sense of rotation
02:25 AM htasta: rs[m]: any of them? free choice? :D
02:26 AM rs[m]: choose one pair, and swap the wires. any pair. but only one ;)
02:27 AM htasta: ok cool, I'll try, thx
02:33 AM htasta: rs[m]: wonderful! thank you, it's working correctly! now I just need to hook it up to LinuxCNC :D
04:04 AM Loetmichel: *grrr* never thought that mu-metal would be so hard. *changing to the third mill bit on a small speaker enclosure* 80% nickel and it still rips off the mill bit in the CNC 6040 because of chattering. I knew it was not meant for steel, but i figured mu-metal would work considerin the machine can do alu just fine :-(
04:06 AM XXCoder: wonder if cutting properies is different
04:07 AM XXCoder: ie alum needs shapr tool and mu-metal acts different>?
04:07 AM XXCoder: *sharp
04:16 AM veegee: _unreal_ the goal is to reduce fuel consumption. An inline six is already too powerful for a 6,000 lb forklift
04:16 AM veegee: It would do just fine with half the power. I have no idea why they put such a big engine in this thing
04:16 AM rs[m]: counterweight?
04:17 AM veegee: no, they all have a dedicated counterweight
04:17 AM veegee: weight is not a consideration at all for a forklift engine
04:18 AM veegee: But also the thing is really old so it's amazing it runs as well as it does. The carb could use a thorough cleaning. I'm quite sure it's running a bit too rich
04:19 AM veegee: I wouldn't mind increasing the capacity of this thing. It wouldn't be that hard to rip out all the engine components and drop an electric motor in there. Maybe even two, one dedicated to the hydraulics
04:23 AM veegee: Leaning towards BLDC since it's really easy to drive
04:23 AM veegee: permanent magnet AC and switched reluctance are also an option
04:54 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:10 AM jymmmm: Morning
05:10 AM XXCoder: heys
05:41 AM jymmmm: a stable modem would be nice
05:56 AM Tom_L: morning
05:57 AM jymmmm: hi Tom_L
05:57 AM Tom_L: ur up early
05:57 AM jymmmm: Yeah, couldn't sleep
06:08 AM jymmmm: Tom_L: Thanks for the box fan filter idea, I like it, I don't need it (atm at least) but I'm going to pass it on to other people that might.
06:10 AM * JT-Cave has a 20" box fan with a filter running 24/7 in both shops
06:10 AM jymmmm: JT Lots of smoke in your area? Did you see Tom's "dual filter" thingy?
06:11 AM Tom_L: maye that was XXCoder's idea?
06:11 AM Tom_L: i don't recall
06:11 AM jymmmm: Oh, maybe
06:11 AM XXCoder: ya i linked to that picture
06:11 AM JT-Cave: no, just dust from grinding, welding, wood working etc
06:12 AM jymmmm: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcT06X_lJfdQ7L_Q3SjfrNSiY7UbTbUw6VIAzA&usqp=CAU
06:12 AM Tom_L: my friend has a debur table in his shop
06:12 AM Tom_L: complete surround with filters
06:12 AM jymmmm: I thought about that.... could goto dollar tree and get everything you need ecept the fan
06:12 AM Tom_L: downdraft
06:13 AM JT-Cave: I just put a 20" x 20" filter behind the fan
06:13 AM XXCoder: you could go to single store for that essentally. go to fan dept grab a box fan, go to house filters buy 2 filters. you can use box fan's box as material for closing gaps
06:13 AM XXCoder: jt yeah can do single but some air flow loss.
06:13 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: true
06:14 AM Tom_L: especially after a few hrs use
06:14 AM JT-Cave: yea but taping the filter on makes it hard to clean/replace
06:14 AM Tom_L: knowing you, i figured you'd weld up a metal filter frame for it :)
06:15 AM JT-Cave: it's a box fan so lots of air flow loss just from being a round fan in a square box lol
06:15 AM jymmmm: I was thinking wrap the cardboard in tape frst, then tape the filter to that, so you can easily re-tape new filters on without ripping the cardbaord up
06:15 AM XXCoder: box fan actually its square (fan is round but yeah)
06:15 AM XXCoder: i bet you could make some framework to easily swap or clean filters
06:15 AM XXCoder: bolt into box fan
06:16 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: Bigger cardboard and you can glue on "slide in" grooves
06:16 AM jymmmm: sorta
06:16 AM XXCoder: it really depends if its supposely one use or many
06:17 AM Tom_L: ok, i'm headin out early. later
06:17 AM jymmmm: hasta Tom_L
06:17 AM XXCoder: later have fun
06:18 AM JT-Cave: https://www.amazon.com/Steel-Return-Air-Filter-Grille/dp/B0064QHV88
06:18 AM JT-Cave: much better to fit that to the fan
06:19 AM JT-Cave: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-20-in-x-20-in-White-Return-Air-Filter-Grille-E190RF-20X20/300539297
06:19 AM XXCoder: probably can use 2 but thats quite expensive heh
06:19 AM jymmmm: bungie cord
06:19 AM JT-Cave: https://www.homedepot.com/p/EZ-FLO-20-in-x-20-in-Steel-Return-Filter-Grille-61632/205674899
06:20 AM JT-Cave: don't even need a bungie cord the suction keeps the filter in place
06:20 AM jymmmm: ah, heh
06:20 AM JT-Cave: I've been doing that for years
06:21 AM XXCoder: interesting. intake rather than outlet
06:21 AM JT-Cave: helps keep the fan a bit cleaner
06:21 AM XXCoder: hmm didnt think of that
06:21 AM XXCoder: i wonder if 2 filter still works with inlet rather than out
06:22 AM JT-Cave: sure why not
06:23 AM jymmmm: just the dirt would be on the outside, at least you could see it
06:24 AM JT-Cave: you can clean the filters by carefully bringing them outside and tapping it on something... just be up wind lol
06:25 AM XXCoder: unless you wWANT to be well dusted lol
06:25 AM jymmmm: Dust in the wind....
06:25 AM JT-Cave: chickens might like that
06:26 AM jymmmm: Just noticed it's it's 9/11 today
06:30 AM XXCoder: yeah
06:32 AM CaptHindsight: glad that whole terrorism thing is over, whew
06:34 AM jymmmm: I don't think I even have a "box fan", I've been using those high velocity fans for so long and just love them, like this... https://www.homedepot.com/p/BlueDri-20-in-Firtana-20X-High-Velocity-Floor-Fan-in-Black-BA-FT-20X/314377513
06:36 AM JT-Cave: I have one like that from menards and it's really loud
06:36 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-20-in-Box-Fan-B20201/203072133
06:36 AM CaptHindsight: still made in Chicago
06:37 AM JT-Cave: that's what I have a few lasko fans
06:37 AM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I avoid anything "lasko"
06:37 AM jymmmm: JT Yeah, I got lucky, the one I have is actually pretty quite.
06:38 AM CaptHindsight: they compete with the Chinese
06:38 AM XXCoder: on racing to bottom?
06:38 AM jymmmm: Now, the old PAtton one I have sounds like a jet engne taking off.
06:38 AM XXCoder: my big round fan is roughly 10 years old
06:38 AM CaptHindsight: so we can make cheap crap as well or better than them
06:38 AM XXCoder: more than that really, still going fine
06:40 AM CaptHindsight: believe it or else, the Lasko fans wear out much faster if not kept level
06:41 AM CaptHindsight: worst is pointing up or down
06:42 AM jymmmm: During Campfire, all the banks had these water filled filtration fans. Stood about 2.5ft tall, never did figure out how they got it to work
06:43 AM jymmmm: no mechaincal fileters, just water
06:43 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Comfort-Zone-48-in-High-Velocity-Industrial-2-Speed-2-Wheel-Black-Belt-Drive-Drum-Fan-with-Aluminum-Blades-CZMC48B/311552947 pretty noisy
06:43 AM JT-Cave: https://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/portable-fans/masterforce-trade-20-high-velocity-floor-fan/hv-20d-mf/p-1533564536347-c-12727.htm
06:43 AM JT-Cave: very noisy
06:43 AM XXCoder: that'd need fiber filter lol
06:44 AM CaptHindsight: the blades come pre bent so they vibrate from the out of balance condidtion
06:44 AM XXCoder: yeah my last job they break once a while
06:44 AM CaptHindsight: I'm going to put a different motor in and VFD to control the sound
06:44 AM XXCoder: shop rebuild em with 2 pipes around outside for strengthening
06:44 AM XXCoder: then new motors
06:45 AM XXCoder: threw 2 away and didnt replace em
06:45 AM XXCoder: they keep breaking
06:46 AM Loetmichel: maan, i should really get new bifocal glasses... jsut borrowed +2 reading glasses from a coworker and suddenly i can SEE what i solder on those 20 Displayport cables. Makes it a lot easier to do a decent job :-)
06:46 AM jymmmm: Hmmm, okey... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8bgYI4XfnU The ones at the banks were VERY quiet, you never even knew they were running
06:52 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: Maybe use the microscope you have?
06:56 AM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
06:57 AM Loetmichel: to inconvenient. i am soldering for 45 years now... i can do most things more or less without looking. the +2 reading glasses are a good compromise.
06:57 AM beachbumpete1: Morning folks
06:57 AM beachbumpete1: Loetmichel: the struggle is real man ;)
06:58 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: Well $2 at dollar store, so you can buy 10 of them and leave them everywhere =)
06:59 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: cheaper than bifocals
06:59 AM XXCoder: glasses each machine
06:59 AM XXCoder: glasses each drawer in tool cart
06:59 AM jymmmm: yep
06:59 AM CaptHindsight: and in the car
07:00 AM CaptHindsight: restaurant menus are usually in 8 point type
07:01 AM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: 4pt just to mess with ppl
07:02 AM jymmmm: I have some machine screws on the HVAC outdoor fan grill that keep coming loose, any suggested?
07:03 AM XXCoder: pfte tape?
07:03 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: they are like self tapping screws,
07:03 AM jymmmm: sorry, my mistake
07:04 AM XXCoder: yeah
07:04 AM jymmmm: they look like wood screws, but made for metal.
07:04 AM CaptHindsight: silicone caulk on threads
07:05 AM jymmmm: Won't the just cut off when screwing them in?
07:05 AM jymmmm: that*
07:05 AM CaptHindsight: heh, screw them in when still wet
07:06 AM jymmmm: heh, that might work.
07:06 AM XXCoder: i used pfte tape before too, it works
07:07 AM CaptHindsight: star lock washers
07:07 AM XXCoder: just leave start clear so you can start it in
07:07 AM CaptHindsight: it's holding a sheet metal frame likely so you just can't torque them in more
07:08 AM jymmmm: I meant sheet metal screws, not machine screws. The HVAC is 20 years old, so the snow, etc is just enlarged the hole a bit
07:08 AM CaptHindsight: yeah
07:09 AM jymmmm: Yeah, I'm not torquing them down, just snug.
07:09 AM XXCoder: ah not any deeper than single sheet. it might still work but not strong at all. silicine would work
07:09 AM XXCoder: can you access other side? if so can dab em on after bolt it in
07:10 AM jymmmm: I just don't know if going to the next larger size screw would be worth it
07:11 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: No, can't get to the other side
07:12 AM CaptHindsight: Serrated Washer Head https://www.fehr.com/screws/1-4-14-x-3-4-hex-serrated-washer-head-drill-tap-screw-7-16-across-flats-x-1000-pcs-c6322-1000
07:12 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: The grill does over this https://i.imgur.com/okCWwSk.jpg
07:13 AM XXCoder: fill holes with silican then bolt on
07:13 AM jymmmm: Heh, like a gromet =)
07:13 AM CaptHindsight: even hot melt will work
07:14 AM XXCoder: pretty much
07:15 AM CaptHindsight: serrations in the metal so it bites or some adhesive that adds enough tension to keep them from turning
07:16 AM jymmmm: sounds good, After sunrise, it should be warm enough that the heater doesn't need to be on long enough for the silicone to setup
07:17 AM jymmmm: IT's weird to think, but wildfire = REALLY COLD!!! (the smoke and ash blocks the sun)
07:17 AM CaptHindsight: can you place speed nuts inside and then use studs and nylon locknuts?
07:17 AM jymmmm: Suppose to be 89F today, but only 68F
07:18 AM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: are speed nuts snow proof, or will they rust out?
07:18 AM CaptHindsight: was only 61F here for a high
07:19 AM CaptHindsight: SS speed nuts should work
07:19 AM jymmmm: Never seen SS ones
07:21 AM CaptHindsight: pricey https://www.mcmaster.com/speed-nuts/material~stainless-steel/
07:23 AM jymmmm: Eh, I'll try the silicone first, if nothing else it'll glue the grill too, lol
07:24 AM CaptHindsight: low cost and in stock
07:24 AM jymmmm: And no having to drive 50 miles to get them
07:25 AM CaptHindsight: my big fans use serrated head sheet meat screws, and they still have to be re-tightened yearly
07:29 AM jymmmm: Maybe I can use short machine screws from the bottom up; put on a nut and lock washer to secure them; then the grill, and a nylock nut?
07:30 AM XXCoder: yeah you could then grind off excess of bolt
07:31 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: If a tiny stub sticks up, no biggy
07:31 AM XXCoder: i suppose but i'd suggest grind off anyway
07:31 AM jymmmm: Yeah, I can still do that if needed
07:32 AM XXCoder: my bro has C scar on scalp by person not grinding off excess on bottom of tire swing
07:32 AM jymmmm: I'll measure the depth when I take the grill off later today.
07:32 AM XXCoder: 44 sewing. he was 4 years old so c is small on his head now
07:32 AM jymmmm: ouch :(
07:32 AM XXCoder: multi-layer sewing even heh
07:32 AM XXCoder: 22 ech
07:32 AM jymmmm: eeeesh
07:34 AM jymmmm: I'll try the silicone first today
08:05 AM beachbumpete1: Id try the stainless star lock washers
08:06 AM beachbumpete1: the silicone will only work once... then when you gotta service it you will be hating that stuff LOL
09:14 AM JT-Shop: I very seldom eat at a fast food joint... exceptions on the road or fasting lab work. Stopped at mcpuke after the lab drew my blood and geez a sausage egg biscuit meal with a small oj was $8.50!!1
09:21 AM Rab: Wow, what is this expensive evil magic: https://www.mcmaster.com/90125A083/
09:22 AM skunkworks: Rab: cool.
09:25 AM skunkworks: wonder if it somehow locks in its closed postion
09:30 AM Rab: I guess the two halves jam? I just can't figure out how it's held together.
09:30 AM JT-Shop: yippie 2.8.0 fixed my pin reading in g code on to testing axis, stop in qtpyvcp
09:30 AM skunkworks: yay!
09:35 AM roycroft: yes, rab, they jam
09:35 AM roycroft: and they actually work well
09:35 AM skunkworks: is it a really fine thread? or some other mechenism?
09:36 AM roycroft: they're a two part nut
09:36 AM roycroft: and they're threaded such that they align almost perfectly when jammed together, so they can be turned as one nut
09:36 AM skunkworks: right - but how do they jam together?
09:37 AM skunkworks: so there is a secondary thread between the nuts?
09:37 AM roycroft: i used them a long time ago
09:37 AM Rab: roycroft, are the two halves on a pivot pin? And is there a detent, or do they just hold closed?
09:38 AM roycroft: i don't remember how they're held together - it's been a long time
09:38 AM roycroft: iirc they twist to line up the slots, then twist back to align the hex lobes
09:39 AM Rab: If this is the same thing, I guess they rotate concentrically: http://sliponlocknut.com/
09:39 AM Rab: Oooh: Slip-ON® Quill Nuts
09:40 AM roycroft: yeah, that seems right
09:40 AM Rab: Unique design for machinery stops"
09:42 AM JT-Shop: Rab, you can email mcmaster and ask questions
09:44 AM roycroft: i just remember we had to use some of those in a telco co to support some ladder rack that was installed improperly and had a huge amount of power cable on it - it would have taken weeks to remove/reroute all the cable, dismantle the ladder rack, and install standard support nuts
09:44 AM roycroft: but we were able to get those slip-on nuts and they worked great
09:44 AM roycroft: and the telco central office manager approved them
09:44 AM Rab: JT-Shop, I've found them to be very helpful in the past, providing part measurements etc. But I suspect my curiosity would only be satisfied by spending $17.43 for a nut to examine first-hand.
09:45 AM JT-Shop: lol
09:45 AM roycroft: and $8 shipping
09:46 AM Rab: Shipping would be amortized across other stuff in an order.
09:48 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.grainger.com/product/6PFR7?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-oncoazh6wIVy8DACh23RgRBEAQYASABEgJjfPD_BwE&cm_mmc=PPC:+Google+PLA&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMI-oncoazh6wIVy8DACh23RgRBEAQYASABEgJjfPD_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!2966!3!281698275786!!!g!469890691366!&gucid=N:N:PS:Paid:GGL:CSM-2295:3G7FAM:20500731
09:49 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tnpla/82610627
09:51 AM CaptHindsight: another fun one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8LGO68ZPlg
09:51 AM roycroft: so over 10% of oregonians are under evacutation orders as of this morning
09:51 AM roycroft: 500,000 people
09:51 AM CaptHindsight: Portlandia
09:53 AM roycroft: one of the level 3 (go now) evacuation zones is 10km from the city limits of portland
09:53 AM Rab: roycroft, my sister in Corvallis is packing her bag, although I don't know if they're at risk.
09:54 AM roycroft: parts of corvallis are at level 3
09:54 AM roycroft: but most of the city is at level 1 or 2
09:54 AM roycroft: the winds are onshore now, so that is helping push the fires back towards the mountains
09:55 AM roycroft: but it's almost a dead calm here at the moment, so not really any effect presently
09:55 AM CaptHindsight: will they run all the lanes on the highway outbound?
09:55 AM roycroft: no, because i5 won't be a good escape route
09:56 AM roycroft: there's a level 3 zone 15km from my house, but there is a confluence of two large rivers a the edge of it
09:56 AM roycroft: it's extremely unlikely that the fire will be able to jump that
09:59 AM roycroft: one of the big problems is that these fires are absolutely ferocious, and move at a pace almost unheard of - one of the fires in oregon was moving 25km/h yesterday
09:59 AM roycroft: that's over twice as fast as a fast moving fire generally moves
10:00 AM roycroft: it's like the fires in southern california fueled by santa anta winds
10:00 AM roycroft: we've never seen anything like this before here
10:03 AM CaptHindsight: so which direction are people supposed to move?
10:03 AM tiwake: texas
10:03 AM Rab: heh
10:03 AM roycroft: west, i should think
10:04 AM roycroft: since there are fires to the northeast, east, and southeast
10:04 AM tiwake: thats what the west coast gets for not managing their tree crops at all
10:04 AM roycroft: oh
10:04 AM roycroft: and fires to the west as well
10:04 AM roycroft: but smaller ones
10:04 AM roycroft: yes, tiwake, we haven't raked our forests well enough
10:04 AM roycroft: kind of hard to do when all our landscapers are being deported
10:05 AM tiwake: wut
10:05 AM roycroft: i'm just responding to your utterly asinine comment with one that makes as much sense
10:06 AM CaptHindsight: https://firms2.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#d:2020-09-10..2020-09-11;l:firms_static_modis,countries;@-121.4,43.9,8z
10:06 AM tiwake: the logging industry is dead compared to what it once was in the 1970's
10:07 AM tiwake: typical tree crops are grown 30-40 years
10:09 AM CaptHindsight: trees grow slower than corn
10:14 AM roycroft: the state of the logging industry has nothing to do with the fires we're experiencing
10:15 AM tiwake: https://babylonbee.com/news/u-haul-introduces-armored-war-rigs-for-californians-trying-to-flee-states-post-apocalyptic-wasteland
11:21 AM roycroft: so it's getting close to the 15th - my deadline for completing my workbench - and it's looking like i'll be close to completion, but probably won't make that deadline
11:22 AM roycroft: i'm at 205 hours, so still at the low end of my estimated total time
11:22 AM roycroft: the poor air quality has made it difficult to work on it this week, though
11:23 AM JT-Cave: I was wondering if you were even working on it in your situation
11:23 AM roycroft: and while it's improving slowly, it's still very unhealthy, and i'm still having trouble breathing
11:23 AM roycroft: yes, just not with the vigor i've been accustomed to
11:24 AM roycroft: and i just had my first major screwup - i cut a critical piece too short
11:24 AM roycroft: i can recover from that, but it's going to add a few hours of work
11:24 AM JT-Cave: rutrow
11:24 AM FinboySlick: "Measure once, cut twice and the darn thing is still too short."
11:24 AM roycroft: i'm like 90% done
11:25 AM roycroft: i was actually pretty surprised that i didn't screw something up earlier
11:25 AM FinboySlick: roycroft: I reiterate that it is a beautiful piece of work.
11:25 AM roycroft: the houndstooth dovetails in the end cap are my next big task
11:25 AM roycroft: and i'm rather intimidated by that
11:25 AM roycroft: i've never done hounds tooth dovetails before
11:25 AM roycroft: and i've never cut dovetails that big before
11:26 AM roycroft: i'm giving myself this entire weekend to do them
11:26 AM roycroft: i might get them both done on saturday
11:26 AM roycroft: i might still be struggling with the first one sunday night
11:27 AM JT-Cave: I looked them up and it looks like measure 5 times cut once
11:27 AM roycroft: i might screw it up completely, in which case i'd have to drive to portland next week to get another chunk of walnut, remake the entire end cap, and basically add a week to the project
11:27 AM roycroft: i don't think they're as hard as they look
11:27 AM roycroft: but again, they're really big
11:27 AM roycroft: and they will be very very visible
11:27 AM roycroft: so they have to be perfect
11:28 AM JT-Cave: it is indeed an art piece to look at
11:28 AM roycroft: thanks
11:28 AM roycroft: it already has a couple dings in it
11:28 AM roycroft: and i'm happy about that
11:28 AM JT-Cave: well lunch minute is up so back to work for me... gotta get something done
11:28 AM roycroft: i'd hate for it be absolutely perfect when i put the finish on it
11:28 AM roycroft: because i'd be afraid to use it :)
11:29 AM roycroft: i'm trying to figure out how to use the new bench to chop the dovetails
11:29 AM JT-Cave: lol my neighbor was a huge canoe guy and his buddy brought his brand new state of the art canoe over... my neighbor took it out and threw it down in the driveway and said now we can concentrate on canoeing
11:30 AM roycroft: they're so big that using my old bench would just take foreer
11:30 AM roycroft: forever
11:30 AM roycroft: my moxon vise won't fit between the legs of the new bench though
11:30 AM JT-Cave: anyhow back to work for me
11:30 AM FinboySlick: roycroft: Might be worth making a magnetic dovetail guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKcupKHAEcA
11:30 AM roycroft: so i'm trying to sort out a way to make that work
11:31 AM roycroft: when the new bench is fnished it won't be a problem, because i'll be able to span the legs, but right now the bench top has the stubs of the legs sticking up
11:31 AM roycroft: and i won't be planing them down flush until the end cap is installed, after the dovetails are done
11:31 AM roycroft: finboyslick: i think i can cut them straight enough
11:31 AM roycroft: i've been cutting dovetails for decades, but not on a regular basis
11:31 AM roycroft: and never this big
11:32 AM roycroft: the thing is, one lays out and cuts the tails first
11:32 AM roycroft: and then uses the tail board to lay out the pins
11:32 AM roycroft: so if the tails are not perfect, that's ok
11:32 AM roycroft: it's not like doing an independent layout on both components and hoping they fit
11:33 AM roycroft: i'm thinking about making a band saw jig to cut the tails
11:33 AM roycroft: what i'm most concerned about is that because they are so big, and because ash is such a hard wood, i'll become fatigued while cutting the tails and that would mess things up
11:34 AM roycroft: having trouble breathing is not helping with my concern about fatigue
11:34 AM roycroft: but if i can do the majority of the cuts on the band saw, and just some cleanup with a chisel, i might be ok
12:08 PM JT-Shop: finally got some chips flying in the VMC
12:34 PM robotustra: what is VMC?
12:38 PM JT-Shop: Vertical Machining Center
12:38 PM gloops: finally got router PC to boot after 5 months switched off, first 3 or 4 times it lit up, then cpu fan started going into infinite acceleration and didnt stop lol
12:39 PM gloops: dont know what that was, linuxcnc loaded now though
01:17 PM roycroft: so ups are not delivering today, due to the fire
01:19 PM serp: what was usps's tagline?
01:19 PM Tom_L: come rain or snow, hell or high water... we'll still be late
01:20 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/user-10Sep2020-76094.png
01:20 PM roycroft: neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds
01:21 PM skunkworks: about a day.. isolcpus=3 and idle=poll
01:21 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, looks like the top of the empire state building
01:21 PM roycroft: but the desire of a failing politician will stop them dead in their tracks
01:23 PM roycroft: the local ups depot is in a level 1 evacuation area, very close to a level 3
01:55 PM gambakufu: topic is due for an update with the latest release.
02:11 PM robotustra: africa is burning like hell - nobody cares
02:12 PM robotustra: if a little smoke in america - everyone is screaming
02:12 PM robotustra: panicing
02:12 PM robotustra: just observation
02:15 PM unterhaus_: they are making preparations to evacuate in Portland and there is nowhere to go. But yeah, NBD
02:15 PM unterhaus_: I guess there are big fires in Brasil as well.
02:15 PM robotustra: who "they"?
02:16 PM robotustra: yep, it looks like fires everywhere
02:16 PM robotustra: but heaviest is in africa
02:16 PM robotustra: but who cares
02:17 PM unterhaus_: granted I hadn't heard that Africa had big fires
02:17 PM CaptHindsight: https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#d:2020-09-10..2020-09-11;@0.0,0.0,3z
02:18 PM unterhaus_: wow, that is bad, had no idea
02:18 PM CaptHindsight: Africa it lit from coats to coast, Amazon is pretty covered
02:20 PM CaptHindsight: SE USA is speckled with small fires
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: ah but the NASA map detects industrial hot spots as fires
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: steel mill just outside Chicago https://firms2.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#d:2020-09-10..2020-09-11;@-87.4,41.7,11z
02:24 PM * robotustra congratulate myself with the end of working day
02:24 PM robotustra: can come back to lathe build :)
02:25 PM robotustra: I like to work form home - 1 min and you alredy working on home project
02:25 PM robotustra: no need to go by car 30-40 min
02:31 PM Rab: robotustra, you're observing that people in Oregon are more concerned about Oregon being on fire, than about Africa?
02:32 PM roycroft: i care about what's happening everywhere
02:32 PM roycroft: but i care more about, know more about, and need to pay attention more to where i live
02:32 PM robotustra: Rab, no, I just stating that people are just care about own ass
02:32 PM roycroft: if parts of africa are burning i don't need to be concerned about evacuating
02:32 PM robotustra: because it's closer
02:33 PM robotustra: it's a human nature thow
02:33 PM roycroft: but that is absolutely not true
02:33 PM roycroft: i cannot speak for all people
02:33 PM roycroft: but i assure you, i'm perfectly capable of being concerned about disasters/human rights violations/etc. in other parts of the world while i'm primarily focused on what is affecting my health and well being at home
02:35 PM robotustra: key words "my health and well being"
02:35 PM roycroft: do you have a point?
02:35 PM robotustra: it's a core of capitalism filosophy
02:35 PM roycroft: odd
02:35 PM robotustra: I'm just ranting
02:36 PM roycroft: because we're not a capitalist country
02:36 PM roycroft: far from it
02:36 PM robotustra: who told you that?
02:36 PM roycroft: but i put it to you that if i'm dead, any concern i might have had for others suffering in the world would be meaningless
02:36 PM roycroft: living here tells me this
02:37 PM roycroft: we're a corporate oligarchy
02:37 PM robotustra: do you have something to compare with?
02:37 PM roycroft: not a free market capitalist society
02:37 PM robotustra: I know by my own experience how capitalist and socialism look like
02:37 PM robotustra: do you?
02:38 PM roycroft: capitalism and socialism are not binary
02:38 PM roycroft: we have some bits of capitalism in our economy
02:38 PM roycroft: and some bits of socialism
02:38 PM robotustra: no, but there is a "majority" of diffs
02:38 PM roycroft: but our socilism is mostly corporate socilism
02:38 PM roycroft: socialism
02:39 PM roycroft: i don't reap the benefits of our socialism
02:39 PM roycroft: but the big oil companies do
02:39 PM roycroft: because they own our government
02:39 PM robotustra: what is the definition of "corporate socialism"?
02:39 PM roycroft: we're way off topic here
02:39 PM robotustra: I missed something
02:39 PM robotustra: ok, lets stop then
02:40 PM roycroft: basically, the working class pay taxes that the government gives to the corporations
02:40 PM robotustra: I think CIA and other 16 agencies are polling this chat
02:40 PM roycroft: i assume so
02:40 PM roycroft: i don't believe in laizez-faire capitalism
02:40 PM robotustra: i.e. there is no freedom of speach in usa
02:40 PM roycroft: but i do believe in capitlism
02:41 PM roycroft: i'd like to experience it some day
02:41 PM robotustra: I don't believe alredy in anything, soc is bad one way cap is bad another way
02:41 PM roycroft: but that's not going to happen as long as the corporations continue to own our goernment
02:41 PM roycroft: i believe in whatever is the best solution for the situation
02:41 PM robotustra: it should be some other combination
02:42 PM roycroft: which is a combination of capitalism and socialism
02:42 PM roycroft: almost every economy in the world is a mixed ecomony
02:42 PM robotustra: not necessary
02:42 PM roycroft: capitalism vs. socialism is a false dichotomy
02:42 PM robotustra: in could be a combination of something else like anarchy
02:42 PM robotustra: I told "something else"
02:43 PM robotustra: first one should start from justace institute. becasue it does not exist on this planet
02:44 PM roycroft: what you told me is that if i've not lived under a repressive so-called socialist regime i have no right to make a judgement about capitalism vs. socialism
02:44 PM roycroft: nor that i can even claim that the society that i live in is capitalist or not
02:45 PM roycroft: but let's move on
02:45 PM robotustra: I didn't live at repressive socialism :)
02:45 PM robotustra: "repressive socialism" started only after 1994
02:45 PM robotustra: after decay of USSR
02:46 PM robotustra: a bit later than 1991
02:46 PM robotustra: before that the socialism was ok
02:46 PM robotustra: I got a high education and master degree for FREE
02:46 PM robotustra: and I got paid for study
02:47 PM robotustra: can you imagine it in USA?
02:47 PM robotustra: medical care costs 0 in socialism
02:47 PM robotustra: for people
02:48 PM roycroft: this started with your calling me, in effect, a selfish asshole because there is major fire burning very close to where i live, and the smoke from that fire has been causing me health problems all week, and i'm more concerned about that at the moment than about fires in africa that have no effect on me and about which i can do nothing
02:48 PM robotustra: these are 2 huge diffs between capitalism and socialism
02:48 PM roycroft: and i'm still calling you out on that
02:49 PM roycroft: you're a jerk for calling me selfish like that
02:49 PM roycroft: and i'm being polite right now
02:49 PM robotustra: I didn't call that, but you have resonated to my words about selfishness of people
02:49 PM robotustra: and nature of humans
02:49 PM roycroft: if your house were about to burn down i'd expect you to be focused on that
02:49 PM roycroft: you did say that, in effect
02:49 PM roycroft: and i'm not even the one who first called you out on it
02:49 PM roycroft: rab did
02:50 PM roycroft: so you can't say it's just me
02:50 PM robotustra: nature of humans
02:50 PM jymmmm: Okeyyyyy. We really don't need these type of topics here please
02:50 PM roycroft: whatever that is supposed to mean
02:50 PM roycroft: then please tell the jerks to stop bringing them up
02:50 PM jymmmm: everyone, please, just walk away
02:51 PM roycroft: i did not start on this
02:51 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to sit by and let people slander me
02:51 PM roycroft: so expect that when someone is being a jerk i'm going to react
02:51 PM serp: how do you ever browse the internet
02:52 PM roycroft: another non sequitur
02:52 PM robotustra: roycroft, you mean I a jerk?
02:52 PM jymmmm: serp: with a browser... DUH
02:52 PM roycroft: yes, that is what i mean
02:52 PM roycroft: you should know that, because i told you so directly
02:53 PM jymmmm: roycroft: robotustra please, take it private if you want to continue
02:53 PM roycroft: i want him to stfu
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: robotustra> nature of humans, hey speak for yourself!
02:53 PM roycroft: but i'll step away for a bit
02:53 PM jymmmm: roycroft: then just /ignore robotustra
02:54 PM roycroft: although i take no responsibility for starting this, i certainly see that i'm exacerbating the situation
02:54 PM roycroft: so i'll just go afk for a bit
02:54 PM jymmmm: good answer, good answer (audiance applause)
02:55 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, I actually am
02:55 PM robotustra: I forgive roycroft his words, I'm not angry at all
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/tact
03:01 PM Deejay: gn8
03:01 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, it's not about me definetly
03:06 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, I consider a tact as a form of lie
03:07 PM unterhaus_: not saying everything you know every time is not lying
03:07 PM unterhaus_: I worked with a guy that felt compelled to tell his boss he was an idiot every time they talked
03:07 PM unterhaus_: it was a problem for me, even though it was true
03:08 PM robotustra: unterhaus_, how did you resist?
03:08 PM unterhaus_: I wasn't sure who the bigger idiot was
03:09 PM unterhaus_: if you have to convince someone to do something calling them an idiot is not a good start
03:09 PM robotustra: true
03:10 PM robotustra: "hey, idiots, you forget to do this and that" (c)
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: you start out by giving them a poor education, then keeping them in fear by the news reports, keeping their income low and encouraging them to be good consumers
03:10 PM robotustra: hmm, I'm stuck a but with my lathe
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: idiots and crazy people don't like being called idiots or crazy
03:11 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, you are talking about murica?
03:11 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: You're crazy you idiot <rimshot>
03:12 PM robotustra: anyone can call me an idiot or jerk, because I'm actually nither nor
03:12 PM jymmmm: O_o
03:12 PM robotustra: it's like to tell Einstein that he is a bad phisicist
03:12 PM robotustra: he didn't care
03:13 PM robotustra: physicist*
03:13 PM Loetmichel: robustra: as far as i know he would have cared. IF you could prove your statement.
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: oh yeah!
03:14 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: FWIW, crazy ppl know they are crazy, so they don't actually mind.
03:14 PM robotustra: Loetmichel, he was very upset when somebody told that he was a bad violinist :)
03:14 PM ve7it: 2 good things about being crazy.. nobody messes with you and you dont give a crap!
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect
03:17 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight, as soon as I know how to solve numerically Schrodinger equations this link is not relevant for me
03:18 PM Loetmichel: robustra: i meant: the main difference between geniusses and simpletons is IMHO that the geniusses are usually aware that they know very little, unlike the latter that assume they know it all
03:18 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel++
03:19 PM robotustra: Loetmichel, I know almost nothing althow I was study for 18+ years
03:20 PM robotustra: so, according to your definition - if I admit that I know nothing - I'm a genius
03:20 PM Loetmichel: <- knows a lot of things about a lot of fields but wouldnt dare to call himself "expert" in any of them
03:20 PM Loetmichel: classic "jack of all trades, master of none"
03:20 PM jymmmm: robotustra: Please, stop instigating, it's bordering on trolling.
03:20 PM Loetmichel: (although decent ad quite a few)
03:20 PM robotustra: jymmmm, ok, sorry, today is not my day
03:21 PM jymmmm: ty
03:21 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: indeed, dunning-kruger is what i meant.
03:21 PM robotustra: better I'll go cut the wood
03:22 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest34463
03:47 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, and just when it was warming up!
03:47 PM Tom_L: we got all weekend!!!
03:48 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: lol, smh
03:48 PM ChanServ changed topic of #linuxcnc to: LinuxCNC is a linux-based open-source CNC control. | Latest release: 2.8.0 | http://www.linuxcnc.org | Register with freenode before speaking
03:49 PM Tom_L: yay!!
03:50 PM Tom_L: now everybody run out and install it and put it thru the paces
03:50 PM Tom_L: i'm waiting til my mill upgrade is done
03:51 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: ETA: 2235? (Year, not time)
03:51 PM Tom_L: few weeks
03:51 PM jymmmm: ah, cool
03:51 PM Tom_L: it's ordered
03:52 PM jymmmm: woohoo
03:52 PM jymmmm: whatcha gettin?
03:52 PM Tom_L: then i gotta get new pulleys once i can establish the center distance
03:52 PM Tom_L: 1.2kw spindle motor
03:53 PM Tom_L: bldc instead of this crappy sherline motor
03:53 PM jymmmm: BDLC?
03:53 PM Tom_L: brushless dc
03:54 PM jymmmm: ah ok
03:54 PM Tom_L: ecm
03:57 PM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
04:08 PM * JT-Shop is starting to make mistooks must be time to pop the top on a Weihenstephaner and go sit with the pullets
04:18 PM Thorhian_: I have two of the 3 axis of my machine running now :) All good so far lol
04:35 PM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSN4XabOAOM
04:37 PM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
04:43 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: Ok, dipped the screws in silicone, then screwed in placed.
05:01 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, screws for what?
05:02 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: Oh sorry,, I guess I was talking to XXCoder last night about the hvac outdoor fan sheet metal screws coming loose. We came up with using silicone to screw them better.
05:02 PM jymmmm: to hold them better*
05:05 PM Tom_L: loctite was designed for that
05:06 PM CaptHindsight: so wuz silicone
05:07 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: these are sheet metal screw in a 20yo HVAC unit
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: holes in sheet metal have become enlarged over the decades and the screws don't hold as tight
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: next size up screws
05:07 PM JT-Shop: use a ball peen hammer
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: adhesive
05:07 PM Tom_L: use a bigger ball peen hammer!
05:08 PM CaptHindsight: rework sheet metal and fasteners
05:09 PM jymmmm: I've flattened the screw holes and dipped the scews in silicone. We'll see how it goes for now.
05:10 PM CaptHindsight: ruled out solutions, bunjee cords, animal carcass as wedge, new cast iron grill, more beer
05:10 PM CaptHindsight: speeds nuts and machine screws
05:11 PM CaptHindsight: silicone was my idea so if it doesn't work jym did it wrong
05:16 PM jymmmm: lol
05:17 PM jymmmm: ok, I'll just blame you CaptHindsight if it doens't work
05:17 PM JT-Shop: silicone is crappy
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: jymmmm blame yur face
05:18 PM JT-Shop: but jymmmm prob can't get good stuff like OSI Quad in commyforina
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: silicone lasts 20+ years
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm don't have star lock washers
05:20 PM jymmmm: JT why is silicone crappy? I just thought it was costly compared to other sealants and that's why nobody uses it for many things, like liquid nails, etc.
05:20 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm is not from Canada and he's not scared of spiders
05:21 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: It's the sheet metal hole that's become oversized (per se), so cna't torque down the screws any longer.
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: polyurethane glue also expands as it cures, have any Gorilla Glue?
05:25 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Maybe a 5yo bottle somewhere. But I just used the silcone about an hour ago, so going to see how works for noww.
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: many years, you'll just have to clean and recoat if you take the screws back out
05:26 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZB7sO5ZoV8
05:26 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I'm still reading this, take your time (days?) and let me know what think as the basis to make a 20-40A CC/CV charger... https://www.microfarad.de/li-charger/
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: huh .de so likely Germans are behind this
05:28 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I havnet figured out how the CC is being done, but like I said not done reading
05:30 PM CaptHindsight: A current-sensing shunt resistor connects the B- terminal with ground. It consists of two 1 Ω / 3 W resistors R8 and R9 connected in parallel.
05:31 PM CaptHindsight: The analog pin A1 on the Arduino is used for measuring the voltage V_1 between B+ and 0 V. Analog pin A0 is used for measuring V_2 between B- and 0V.
05:31 PM CaptHindsight: those are the analog to digital converter pins of the arduino
05:32 PM CaptHindsight: measuring the voltage drop gives them current and then "The PWM-enabled digital output pin 9 on the Arduino generates a PWM signal which drives the gate of the MOSFET Q1 through the NPN transistor Q2. "
05:33 PM CaptHindsight: "The following values for R2, R4 and the power supply voltage need to be chosen in order to charge different numbers of Cells:"
05:35 PM CaptHindsight: Karim Hraibi, doesn't sound German so the nationalists there probably want him out
05:35 PM JT-Shop: jymmmm, because it does not stick well and is a mess to clean up
05:38 PM XXCoder: wow lot more smokey here now :(
05:39 PM JT-Shop: not good
05:40 PM XXCoder: yeah
05:49 PM roycroft: yeah, here too
05:49 PM roycroft: i just got off work, and was going out to the shop
05:50 PM roycroft: the air had been improving all day, but it suddenly got really bad again
05:50 PM roycroft: and i have to open the garage door to do the work i need to do today
05:50 PM roycroft: fortunately it's not raining ashes at the moment
05:51 PM roycroft: and the fire is still zero percent contained
05:52 PM JT-Shop: ouch
05:53 PM roycroft: we have almost a million acres on fire right now in oregon
05:56 PM roycroft: which is bigger than the state of rhode island
05:58 PM roycroft: i need to figure out how to work without opening the door
05:59 PM roycroft: i wish i'd built lift and move system for my bench already - if i move it i can work indoors
06:00 PM CaptHindsight: the Japanese tried to use fires in Oregon during WWII https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/japanese-bomb-u-s-mainland
06:00 PM roycroft: yes, they did
06:01 PM roycroft: oregon was the only part of the continental united states that was attacked during wwii
06:01 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Emily
06:01 PM roycroft: they sent balloons across the pacific
06:01 PM roycroft: with bombs in them

06:06 PM roycroft: hf have some 3 wheel dollies for $4 each
06:06 PM roycroft: they're rated at 180lbs working load
06:07 PM roycroft: divide that by two to get the real load
06:07 PM roycroft: and they aren't quite enough to hold my bench if i get four of them
06:07 PM CaptHindsight: think i saw those plastic ones there
06:07 PM roycroft: the steel ones are only rated at 130lbs
06:08 PM roycroft: but those are the right size
06:08 PM roycroft: the legs on my bench are 4-3/4" square
06:08 PM roycroft: so they would fit nicely on those dollies
06:08 PM roycroft: i might give them a go
06:08 PM roycroft: if they break i'll just return them
06:08 PM roycroft: if they work i won't have to open the door
06:09 PM roycroft: these are the little triangular ones
06:10 PM * roycroft decides to get some to see if they work
06:10 PM roycroft: it's 4pm right now, and almost as dark as dusk
06:10 PM roycroft: that's how thick the smoke has become again
06:11 PM roycroft: my shop is currently not too smoky, and if i turn on the air filter and the a/c before i head off to hf it will be even cleaner when i get back
06:21 PM andypugh: Spanners of Unusual Size: https://photos.app.goo.gl/xEEv2dHWGFMGEqnE9
06:22 PM Tom_L: cute
06:23 PM Tom_L: andypugh, is the buildbot up to date or just the iso?
06:25 PM andypugh: Buildbot should be up to date, but I proabably need to check that 2.8 has been merged to Mater
06:26 PM CaptHindsight: plot twist, that coin is 1m in dia
06:27 PM andypugh: That’s been done.
06:28 PM Tom_L: how were those dependency issues with gmoccapy and gscreen fixed?
06:28 PM Tom_L: that was just a buster issue iirc
06:28 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight: https://www.cnet.com/news/gigantic-coin-achieves-tilt-shift-effect/
06:28 PM jymmmm: JT ah
06:29 PM andypugh: Tom_L: I backported gtksourceview on our own repository
06:29 PM Tom_L: i'm looking to update wheezy soon
06:30 PM jymmmm: sounds like a 7 dwarf
06:31 PM jymmmm: wheezy, sleezy, bitchy, whiny, dopey, doc

06:35 PM XXCoder: roycroft: ouch :(
06:36 PM XXCoder: andypugh: nice!
06:37 PM roycroft: i'm so glad i made that run to hf
06:38 PM andypugh: 2.1mm and 4.6mm for a bore micrometer set
06:38 PM roycroft: because on the way home i saw a sight the likes of which i've never seen before, and probably never shall
06:38 PM roycroft: a mini cooper was driving down the road
06:38 PM andypugh: Not that unusual.
06:38 PM roycroft: on top of the mini cooper was a moving pad, and on top of that a sheet of plywood, on top of that a full-size washing machine on its side, on top of that another moving pad, and on top of that a full size clothes dryer on its side
06:39 PM roycroft: all strapped down to the mini with a couple ratchet straps
06:39 PM roycroft: the washer/dryer combo were taller than the car
06:39 PM andypugh: OK, that’s unusual.
06:39 PM andypugh: And a bit stupid
06:39 PM roycroft: and as it was driving down the road i could see the roof of the car flexing up and down
06:39 PM XXCoder: ouch
06:39 PM roycroft: very stupid
06:39 PM XXCoder: rent a truck
06:39 PM andypugh: Rent a trailer
06:40 PM XXCoder: that reminds me of that one hold on see if can find it again
06:40 PM roycroft: even moving one of those at a time would be extremely stupid
06:40 PM roycroft: but not nearly as stupid as moving both
06:40 PM roycroft: i kind of wonder how they got them stacked up there in the first place
06:40 PM andypugh: Well, I would have put them one behind the other amidships…
06:40 PM roycroft: a mini cooper is a very small car with a small roof
06:40 PM roycroft: i don't think it would be possible to do that
06:41 PM roycroft: it was entertaining
06:41 PM roycroft: and i was glad i was going the opposite direction, with a wide turning lane in between me and the other lane
06:42 PM XXCoder: https://www.snopes.com/tachyon/2016/11/lumber_car_feature.jpg
06:42 PM roycroft: i'm not sure, but i suspect if the stack started falling sideways it might have flipped the car
06:42 PM roycroft: if the straps were strong enough
06:43 PM roycroft: that's like a ton of osb
06:43 PM roycroft: literally a ton
06:43 PM roycroft: nice tie strings though
06:43 PM roycroft: plenty strong
06:44 PM XXCoder: in that picture apparently his girlfriend was napping
06:45 PM XXCoder: from what i read if she was awake she'd have stopped him buy buying so nmany. orginal plan was just buy a few
06:45 PM roycroft: home depot will deliver
06:46 PM roycroft: which is way cheaper than paying for major bodywork on the car
06:46 PM XXCoder: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/lumber-car/
06:46 PM XXCoder: more info
06:47 PM roycroft: hmm
06:47 PM XXCoder: other pictures yopu can see how crushed car is lol
06:47 PM roycroft: so the article says 3000 lbs
06:47 PM roycroft: including 800 lbs of concrete that i did not see
06:47 PM roycroft: so 2200lbs of lumber
06:48 PM roycroft: my estimate was pretty accurate :)
06:48 PM XXCoder: in fact its shocking bad, that lady really should be waken up and taken out before collipse
06:49 PM roycroft: considering the shock absorbers were protruding through the floor of the car, "shockingly bad" is apt
06:50 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:51 PM roycroft: so he was going to drive 40 miles with that load
06:51 PM roycroft: because buying the stuff at a home depot in annapolis was not an option?
06:52 PM XXCoder: who knows what it was like in 20 years ago but yeah dunno why its not
06:52 PM XXCoder: maybe store there refused to sell without a truck?
06:53 PM roycroft: but they deliver
06:53 PM roycroft: cheaply
06:53 PM roycroft: a lot cheaper than driving 40 miles to a different store, loading that crap up, and driving back
06:53 PM XXCoder: definitely
06:53 PM XXCoder: https://www.boredpanda.com/the-most-overloaded-vehicles-of-all-times/
06:53 PM roycroft: not to mention the damage to the vehicle
06:54 PM XXCoder: even if it magically stood up to abuse it would cost more money
07:03 PM roycroft: i should get to work
07:04 PM roycroft: since i'm already behind schedule
07:04 PM roycroft: the air in the shop should be pretty clean now
07:04 PM XXCoder: nice
07:04 PM XXCoder: filtering air now?
07:05 PM jymmmm: Can totally see JT riding his spyder and chickens... https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/vietnam_geese1__880.jpg
07:07 PM Tom_L: what? no duck painted helmet!
07:10 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: you'll have to ask JT about that
07:25 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: might have them with lighting bolts paint on the sizes for the chickens
07:39 PM jymmmm: Um, no amperage/wattage rating??? From 3m??? https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Scotchlok-Ring-Tongue-Non-Insulated-Brazed-Seam-M10-8RK-Stud-Size-8-500-Case/?N=5002385+3294757348&rt=rud
07:42 PM XXCoder: roycroft: oh found nice one https://tombuildsstuff.blogspot.com/2013/06/better-box-fan-air-purifier.html
07:42 PM XXCoder: was looking for one agaib for my sister
07:42 PM XXCoder: shes suffering a bit under bad air
07:50 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: WTH?! "Again, blocking the air flow decreases the load and the current on the motor. Period!"
07:50 PM XXCoder: fuk it making one, smoke is getting bad and im concerned about mom
07:52 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Use the charcoal, activated carbon filters
07:52 PM XXCoder: ok
07:52 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Use the charcoal/activated carbon filters
07:52 PM XXCoder: ok
07:52 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: It REALLY does work, ask any pot grower
07:52 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: where you at again?
07:52 PM XXCoder: tacoma
07:52 PM jymmmm: ok hang on
07:53 PM XXCoder: you have few minutes
07:57 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: https://growgen.pro/climate/odor-control-filters.html
07:57 PM jymmmm: Those are pure activated carbon filters. They are intended to be used with an inline fan
07:57 PM jymmmm: They WILL pull all odors, etc out of the air
07:58 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: I'd suggest at least 6"
07:58 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: you can use the HVAC filters of course, but if you REALLY need something good, those would be what I would use.
07:59 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Do check the CFM of each filter
08:00 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: When the weight of the filter doubles, replace it is the rule of thumb
08:01 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Most hydroponic stores will have those filters and inline fans, which are faitly quiet
08:01 PM jymmmm: fairly
08:03 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: They have a store in Seattle
08:04 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: 383 CFM https://growgen.pro/6-x-20-standard-carbon-filter-150-500.html
08:07 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: 250 CFM booster fan for $33 https://growgen.pro/6-grow1-booster-in-line-duct-fan.html
08:09 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: $12 20x25 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Web-20-in-x-25-in-x-1-in-Absorber-Odor-Control-FPR-5-Air-Filter-WABSORBFPR/100011568
08:09 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: you can always add that later to your HVAC filter
08:10 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Use the HVAC filter to remove particulants, then the carbon filter to remove organics
08:11 PM jymmmm: Airflow ----> [HVAC filter] ---> [carbon filter] ------>
08:15 PM roycroft: everything from my table saw back to the garage door was covered in ash when i went out there
08:15 PM roycroft: i had to clean the bench very carefully, so as to not embed any of the ashes in it
08:15 PM roycroft: what a pain in the butt
08:15 PM roycroft: but the good news is that the hf dollies handled more than half their rated weight without failing or seizing up
08:16 PM roycroft: that was a pleasant surprise
08:16 PM roycroft: aqi was down to 128 early this morning
08:17 PM roycroft: now it's back up to 382
08:17 PM roycroft: and i'm monitoring the station that's close to my house
08:17 PM roycroft: so it's fairly close to what i have here
08:29 PM Tom_L: cover it with plastic
08:30 PM jymmmm: him or the house?
08:30 PM Tom_L: his work bench
08:30 PM jymmmm: ah
08:31 PM roycroft: i had to remove what was there
08:32 PM roycroft: and off the machines as well
08:32 PM roycroft: which i've kept mostly covered
08:32 PM roycroft: i can't cover my bench while i'm actively working on it though
08:33 PM jymmmm: But you're not actively cleaning it when you are using it
08:33 PM andypugh: Whoo! More than half rated!. What a world we live in. No wonder indigenous industry is dying, anything made in the UK can only fail at 3x rated. I assume the same is true elsewhere too. I broke my 2 ton lift with 750kg. I probably should have called in Trading Standards.
08:36 PM jymmmm: andypugh: That's POINT TWO tons, gotta look for that dot ;)
08:37 PM roycroft: harbor freight makes machine mart look like a high end outfit by comparison
08:38 PM roycroft: cheap asian imports that often break while driving home
08:38 PM roycroft: but no questions asked returns
08:38 PM roycroft: because they know their stuff is junk
08:38 PM roycroft: i don't buy much there
08:39 PM roycroft: it was worth $16 today for those dollies though, as they got me through the day
08:39 PM roycroft: and likely a few more days
08:51 PM andypugh: My 0.2 ton engine hoist was bought via eBay, but from a unit on a farm 2 miles up the road, so I could have it the same day. And they did give me a free replacement. So now I have two of them, one bent, needing a home.
08:53 PM andypugh: To be fair, it just needs the legs to be a bit thicker. I suspect it was fine when tested, but then they reduced the section size or took out a spreader plate and felt no urge to re-test.
08:55 PM andypugh: The square tube bucled at the pin. : https://photos.app.goo.gl/quLZQhhbRwHYg7EBA
08:55 PM Tom_L: just add a plate at the pin
08:56 PM Tom_L: ahh, maybe not
08:56 PM Tom_L: you might add one on top
08:56 PM andypugh: Hmm, why am I being “fair” that failure nearly destroyed my lathe _and_ the hire van I was moving it in.
08:57 PM andypugh: The answer is to replace the tubes with 5mm thick rather than 2mm thick.
08:58 PM Tom_L: well yeah

10:56 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Nice job!!!!
10:56 PM XXCoder: thanks :)
10:56 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: how is she liking it so far?
10:56 PM XXCoder: my mom cant smell like me
10:57 PM XXCoder: my sis in law is happy!
10:57 PM jymmmm: yay
10:57 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: so it's filter out the smoke smell too?
10:57 PM XXCoder: apparently yeah
10:58 PM jymmmm: Did you add the carbon filters as well?
10:58 PM XXCoder: nah
10:58 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: which filters did you use?
10:58 PM XXCoder: house filters with rating of 11
10:58 PM XXCoder: which is pretty good for house filtering
10:58 PM jymmmm: ah ok, no particular brand?
10:58 PM XXCoder: its normally used for house duct system air cleaner
10:58 PM XXCoder: nah
10:59 PM jymmmm: link?
10:59 PM XXCoder: i didnt order online
10:59 PM jymmmm: home depot?
10:59 PM XXCoder: lowes
11:00 PM jymmmm: 20x20?
11:00 PM XXCoder: yeo
11:00 PM XXCoder: i couldnt find non-flat 20x25 sheets but that is big anyway
11:00 PM XXCoder: it seems to work well enough at 20x20
11:02 PM jymmmm: This? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Filtrete-1500-MPR-Ultra-Allergen-Common-20-in-x-20-in-x-1-in-Actual-19-6-in-x-19-6-in-x-0-7812-in-Electrostatic-Pleated-Air-Filter/3774155

11:05 PM XXCoder: nope
11:06 PM jymmmm: weird, you must be a commie or someting
11:06 PM XXCoder: lol
11:07 PM jymmmm: Anyhow, glad it worked and that it filtered smoke, now how lng before needing to replce them is the question
11:07 PM XXCoder: dunno its annual for entire house
11:07 PM XXCoder: so it should last a month
11:08 PM jymmmm: cool
11:08 PM XXCoder: i wonder if filters will be black lol
11:08 PM jymmmm: dark greay at least

11:26 PM skunkworks: huh - I just updated my fork of linuxcnc on my git hub.
11:26 PM skunkworks: Next - take over the world
11:28 PM skunkworks: it was only around 2000 commits behind..
11:30 PM XXCoder: lol
11:33 PM {HD}: how many watts does my laser need to be to cut metal? maybe 12 or 16 gaugeish...
11:34 PM XXCoder: alllll the watts
11:34 PM XXCoder: heh dunno
11:34 PM {HD}: I like your initial answer since many advertised wattages are over estimated.
11:35 PM XXCoder: no its perfectly correct chinese watts ;)
11:35 PM XXCoder: chinese watts = watts * 0.8
11:36 PM infornography: not 15 watts, I can tell you that
11:37 PM infornography: 15 watts dont cut much besides dark plastic and foam
11:38 PM {HD}: infornography: yea I am aiming for the 100+ watts range
