01:02 AM roycroft: i'm not sure which fire the smoke is coming from but my whole house is filling up with it now
01:08 AM roycroft: there's a big fire by mt. jefferson - that is probably it
01:08 AM roycroft: since mt. jefferson is northeast of here
01:08 AM XXCoder: lots smoke here too
01:08 AM XXCoder: calfornia sourced I think
01:08 AM XXCoder: i turned off my room ac so it dont get hit by it
01:08 AM roycroft: i doubt you're getting smoke from california
01:08 AM roycroft: maybe idaho or bc
01:08 AM XXCoder: i saw it on news
01:08 AM XXCoder: it went out to ocean then turns east to washington
01:08 AM XXCoder: after some distance north
01:08 AM roycroft: that's pretty weird, since we have northeastern winds here
01:08 AM roycroft: in all of western oregon
01:08 AM XXCoder: winds is changing. very beginning of fall
01:08 AM roycroft: but it could be
01:08 AM roycroft: all i know is it's really smokey here
01:09 AM roycroft: there are no westerly winds in washington right now
01:10 AM roycroft: all ne/e/se
01:10 AM XXCoder: what you mean by "westerly"? wind moving towards west?
01:10 AM roycroft: from the west
01:10 AM XXCoder: ah west source. yeah zero oif em now. look at link i posted :) I love that site
01:10 AM roycroft: winds are usually indicated by the direction they're coming from
01:10 AM roycroft: it looks like there's a big fire up by stevens pass and a couple big fires in the okanagan
01:11 AM roycroft: and that's it for washington fires at the moment
01:11 AM XXCoder: ocean winds is quite high speed now!
01:11 AM XXCoder: its usually greenish but now its most yellow/orange
01:12 AM XXCoder: you can see how west part of wa is yellow too. lots wind. no wonder its blowing here!
01:18 AM CaptHindsight: no smoke just pouring rain here
01:19 AM XXCoder: rain probably cleaning it heh
01:39 AM roycroft: we haven't had any rain since early june
01:39 AM roycroft: other than a few sprinkles a couple weeks ago early in the morning
01:39 AM roycroft: barely enough to get the pavement wet then
01:43 AM MrHindsight is now known as CaptHindsight
01:47 AM Loetmichel: OHOH! just went outside for a smoke... looked at the Lasercuter eshaust dangling out the window in the shop... "Hey, Coworker, how did you arm the alarm yesterday evening?" Him: "As usual, why?" $me points to the exhaust hose. One could see the gears behind his forehead work for a few seconds. "Oh!. I think i'll call the alarm company then. Looks like a window sensor is bad." Seems like
01:47 AM Loetmichel: the coworker isnt really awake yet as well. :-)
02:59 AM solobolo2 is now known as htasta
03:14 AM Deejay: moin
04:33 AM andypugh: robotustra: Sorry, I don’t normally leave this on when I am away.
04:33 AM andypugh: Yes, I make gears, It’s easy with CNC.
04:34 AM XXCoder: yo
04:35 AM andypugh: robotustra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhICrb0Tbn4 is a very old video of a simple hobbing setup.
04:35 AM andypugh: But cutting single teeth with an involute cutter is even easier than that
04:37 AM andypugh: Clickspring has recently made a series of vidoes on how to make involute cutters, which is well worth watching, but there really is no need to make the cutters if you can afford to buy them.
04:38 AM andypugh: (Checks: Ah, forget that, that was a Patreon-only series)
04:39 AM XXCoder: yeah. well worth it
04:39 AM XXCoder: amazing videos
04:39 AM veegee: forklift engine was consuming fuel like I've never seen before
04:40 AM veegee: like 10L in 15 minutes
04:40 AM veegee: I changed the oil and that solved the problem
04:40 AM veegee: Oil was probably not changed in years. I should have done that the day I got it
04:41 AM XXCoder: does forklifts has tranmission? if so check oil there its probably orginal heh
04:41 AM veegee: The waste oil was so bad, I could feel the grit between my fingers (nitrile gloves on of course)
04:41 AM veegee: XXCoder it's manual, unsynchronized gearbox
04:41 AM XXCoder: ok no worries then. grease tho?
04:41 AM veegee: there's probably gear oil but not critical like transmission fluid
04:42 AM XXCoder: yeah though i wonder how many miles on it
04:42 AM veegee: wheel bearings were greased well. The wheels free spin very well, I was surprised
04:42 AM veegee: It's an allis chalmers F60-24
04:43 AM veegee: The hour meter looks like it rolled over
04:43 AM veegee: it shows like 2,000 hours but there's no way it only has 2,000 hours. It has wayyyy more than that
04:43 AM veegee: but it runs great
04:44 AM veegee: The engine is old but solid. I think it's cast iron, not the aluminum crap these days
04:44 AM XXCoder: not bad
04:45 AM XXCoder: alum should be fine if they ever figure how to make it true all alumium'
04:45 AM veegee: I'll check the bore diameters and such at some point. I'm curious how far out of spec it is at this point. But it's maintaining oil pressure and cylinder pressure
04:45 AM XXCoder: issue with alum is difference of expason
04:45 AM veegee: yeah the aluminum engine blocks have cylinder liners but still
04:46 AM andypugh: I think Alumina is a better bet for engines than Alum.
04:46 AM veegee: The engine is a straight 6
04:46 AM veegee: I think allis chalmers built the engine themselves
04:47 AM XXCoder: alum oxide engine?
04:47 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:47 AM XXCoder: yo
04:48 AM veegee: I want to get something more like this though: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1505499826
04:51 AM veegee: But definitely going to turn this one into electric once the engine or transmission fail
04:56 AM veegee: I'd love to get an electric one that can do like 15,000 lb
06:14 AM Tom_L: morning
06:18 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:18 AM XXCoder: yo
06:21 AM Tom_L: cooling down over there yet?
06:22 AM JT-Cave: just a little high 00's next few days
06:26 AM Tom_L: last i checked we're supposed to get T-storms later this morning
06:27 AM Tom_L: hi 72 it says
06:39 AM XXCoder: 88 peak today and tomorrow 95f
06:39 AM XXCoder: fun
07:07 AM rs[m]: i heard denver will get snow today?
07:10 AM XXCoder: yeah
07:11 AM XXCoder: im not there so dunno will actually happen but weather prediction belives so
08:33 AM roycroft: well i was wrong yesterday about power outages
08:33 AM roycroft: 150,000 oregonians are without power due to preemptive shutdowns
08:33 AM roycroft: including 5,000 here in eugene
08:34 AM roycroft: not me, fortunately
08:34 AM roycroft: and last night around 11:30 level 3 evacuation orders were issued for several towns just east of here
08:35 AM roycroft: the smoke is a lot thicker this morning, and the sunrise is looking like it will be red-orange
08:35 AM roycroft: and now the forecast has changed and is calling for even higher winds today
09:38 AM roycroft: it's almost an hour after sunrise and it's still as dark as twilight
09:38 AM roycroft: and now there's a power line down about a half hour north fo here, and it has started a fire in a wooded area with steep terrain
09:39 AM roycroft: i guess the utilities did not shut enough stuff down
09:41 AM robotustra: do you have a storm in there?
09:42 AM roycroft: no, just high winds, record high temperatures, and low humidity
09:43 AM roycroft: in other words, the perfect recipe for wildfires
09:44 AM roycroft: i have a headlight that's burned out, and didn't get around to changing it yesterday - i knew i was not going to be driving at night and figured i'd get around to it today
09:44 AM roycroft: but it's still like night right now, so i'll need to change it before i go anywhere today
09:44 AM roycroft: it's been years since we've had smoke this thick right here in town
09:45 AM robotustra: you have to fireproof your workbench, just in case
09:45 AM roycroft: tbe fires won't get near me
09:45 AM robotustra: just kidding
09:46 AM roycroft: but even inside my office, which is the most smoke-free part of the house (due to the a/c unit acting to filter some of it) i'm having difficulty breathing
09:47 AM roycroft: it looks like the wind will shift to be southerly, but not until late friday :(
09:48 AM roycroft: actually, more to the north for a while tomorrow - that might help, but the new fire is almost due north of here
09:48 AM roycroft: it just started, so i have no idea if it's going to get big or not
09:49 AM roycroft: but given where it is, it's probably going to be difficult to contain unless it can be put out from the air quickly this morning
10:15 AM roycroft: i just stepped outside, and everything is covered with ash
10:15 AM roycroft: not a thick layer, but enough to be messy
11:12 AM Loetmichel: hehe, good thing i have two 42Ah AGM batteries in the trunk of my other car. and jumper cables... The BMW 525i station wagon didnt like to be parked for nearly half a year. Battery dead flat. was just not so easy to crawl from the front seat to the trunk over all that junk to get to the batteries and the jumper cables... but it still runs!
11:44 AM roycroft: someone on #inkscape was very helpful discussing vinyl cutters
11:44 AM roycroft: it appears i have some options for cutting directly from innkscape
12:03 PM Eric__: I want to build one of these oxygen concentrators, but it sure would be nice to have a better BoM
12:04 PM Eric__: https://oxikit.com/
12:17 PM Eric__: they need mufflers on the purge outlet
12:24 PM TekniQue: how do they work? I understand the material absorbs the nitrogen
12:24 PM TekniQue: but how do they make it release the nitrogen again for purging?
12:25 PM TekniQue: do they heat up the purging canister or cool it down or something
01:18 PM miss0r: evening
01:30 PM robotustra: evening
01:46 PM norias: yippee
01:47 PM norias: java homework done for the week
01:47 PM norias: haha
02:37 PM veegee: Hmmm good deal? https://www.kijiji.ca/v-heavy-equipment-machinery/st-catharines/hyster-forklift-15-000-lbs-capacity/1512295845
02:38 PM veegee: Ad has been up for a month, so I can probably talk him down on the price
02:39 PM veegee: I wonder what steel the fork/mast is made of. I see welds on mine. I wonder if I can weld shackles to them to help secure loads without messing with the heat treatment
02:40 PM veegee: I move a lot of stuff around that doesn't exactly fit nicely to pallets and is easier to lift from bottom than to lift from top with slings. Shackles and tie down straps would make me feel a lot better
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: the soft tire models do tend to sell for more
02:40 PM veegee: CaptHindsight they call them "pneumatic tire", but then again, they're likely "solid" pneumatic tire
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: but you can sell your hard tire lifts
02:40 PM veegee: what the hell is a "solid" pneumatic tire?
02:41 PM veegee: where does the pneumatic part come in if they're solid?
02:41 PM veegee: Yeah I don't mind selling the allis chalmers one
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: the big ones don't sell fast around here
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: took me a year
02:42 PM FinboySlick: veegee: Might be better to drill a bolt hole than to weld a shackle.
02:42 PM veegee: FinboySlick Yeah that/s certainly an option
02:43 PM FinboySlick: If it's near the tip of the fork it isn't as dangerous because those are only really load-bearing when the load is mostly settled.
02:44 PM veegee: FinboySlick yeah, someone already plasma cut a hole near the tip of one fork on my allis chalmers forklift
02:44 PM FinboySlick: Pretty neat machine anyway. Hope you manage to get it.
02:45 PM veegee: FinboySlick well this would be a dream: https://www.hyster.com/north-america/en-us/products/4-wheel-electric-trucks/j155-190xnl/
02:45 PM FinboySlick: veegee: If you don't want to mess with the temper, a mag drill and some patience might be better.
02:45 PM veegee: FinboySlick yeah I have carbide hole saws. That should do the trick
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: Eric__: was just skimming it, just upgrade to better parts
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5575677/
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: Application of Nanosize Zeolite Molecular Sieves for Medical Oxygen Concentration
02:48 PM FinboySlick: I'm re-discovering JP, needed a good laugh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDFx1YOA5tI
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: TekniQue: N2 and O2 are released from the zeolite during the blowdown and purge stages, which generates a clean bed for the next adsorption cycle.
02:52 PM Eric__: I probably have a lot of parts, but I wouldn't mind some more detail
02:52 PM Eric__: I read on practical machinist that zeolite was easy to get in small quantities, but didn't see any
02:54 PM Eric__: put it in an explosion proof case so the pvc won't kill me when it explodes
02:54 PM Eric__: of course, I'll be 85 then
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: more detail in the link i posted ^^
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: Minimum Burst Pressure (psi) 3"PVC 840
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: max operating should be only 159 psi for sched 40
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pvc-cpvc-pipes-pressures-d_796.html
02:59 PM Eric__: it ages though
02:59 PM Eric__: nobody tests 20 y.o. pvc
03:01 PM CaptHindsight: zeolite is on ebay
03:02 PM CaptHindsight: I just purchases a few different *lites last week for plant growth media
03:02 PM Eric__: hand carved :)
03:03 PM Eric__: what should I search for?
03:04 PM veegee: I bought this dial caliper: https://www.amazon.ca/Starrett-120AM-150-Stainless-Accuracy-Resolution/dp/B000FMX3PM
03:04 PM veegee: I don't know if I paid too much for it ($230 CAD)
03:04 PM Deejay: gn8
03:04 PM veegee: starrett.com lists it for $266 USD
03:04 PM Eric__: If it's new, you aren't going to get a better price than that
03:05 PM veegee: yeah new, sealed with sticker
03:05 PM veegee: I just opened it. It's so perfect I don't even want to ever take it out of its case
03:07 PM Eric__: did you need a caliper that big?
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: Zeolite JLOX-101 (Ø0.4–0.8 mm) from JIANLONG CHEMICAL (Yanshi, Henan, China) was used
03:07 PM Eric__: I got a 20" one from work because they were throwing it out
03:08 PM Eric__: Capt, saw that, not on ebay
03:08 PM Eric__: JLOX must be the trade name from that company
03:09 PM Eric__: I got some info from PM https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/need-advice-zeolite-oxygen-concentrator-353638/
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: basically zeolite in 0.4-0.8mm dia
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: finer and the air flow gets to be too low
03:10 PM veegee: Eric__ it's 150mm, standard size for a caliper
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: larger particles and you lose surface area and efficiency
03:11 PM Eric__: here we go https://www.ebay.com/itm/13X-Molecular-Sieve-one-drum-308-lb-Type-13X-8x12-mesh-bead-zeolite/372847936200?_trkparms=aid%3D555021%26algo%3DPL.SIMRVI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225074%26meid%3D835d7748b6ae406386c937daa5fc4175%26pid%3D100752%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D10%26mehot%3Dco%26sd%3D312090493908%26itm%3D372847936200%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplRVIAMLv5WebWithPLRVIOnTopCombiner&_trksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982
03:11 PM Eric__: ebay links suck, sorry
03:12 PM XXCoder: you can skip everything at ? and after
03:12 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/13X-Molecular-Sieve-one-drum-308-lb-Type-13X-8x12-mesh-bead-zeolite/372847936200
03:13 PM Tom_L: or if you're too lazy, use tinyurl.com
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: the ebay particles are ~2x the dia
03:20 PM Tom_L: so on estop, cut power to drivers or enables?
03:21 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.amazon.com/KMI-Zeolite-Amendment-Gardening-Turfgrass/dp/B07QD25Z1D/ref=sr_1_15
03:21 PM CaptHindsight: Eric__: ^^
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: if they don't list the mesh size, keep walking https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesh_(scale)
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: looks like pool supply stores carry it but hide the mesh size
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/core/lw/2.0/html/tileshop_pmc/tileshop_pmc_inline.html?title=Click on image to zoom&p=PMC3&id=5575677_nanomaterials-07-00195-g006.jpg
03:23 PM Eric__: I guess the important part is the number before "a" which is angstrom
03:24 PM Eric__: I guess I could just get some from the project
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: Eric__: that is the pore size
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: pore size is not particle size
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: i just skimmed the articles, the graph shows they used smaller particles
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: on the NCBI paper
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: Average zeolite particle size 600 µm
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: Average microparticle size 5.75 µm
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: smaller the particle the greater the the total surface area
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: but the flow rate through the filter media will go down using the same pressure
03:28 PM Eric__: that paper was not written by serial entrepeneurs and geniuses like the oxykit was
03:29 PM Eric__: it's always a problem when someone lets you know they are a genius
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: i always ask
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: why come you is smarter?
03:30 PM Eric__: I suspect you are a genius, but too circumspect to admit it
03:30 PM Tom_L: i'd rather have ingenious than genius
03:31 PM Eric__: the most worthless guy I ever worked with had license plates that said "Mensa"
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: ingenuous
03:33 PM Tom_L: either one
03:34 PM Eric__: the oxykit people don't use an oxygen sensor in the loop, I don't think
03:34 PM Eric__: I want to burn the oxygen, so if it burns, it's good
03:35 PM Eric__: 15 lpm is too much
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: now for a cheap 3000 psi pump
03:49 PM Eric__: I should just buy a used oxygen concentrator
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: heh, less work
03:51 PM Eric__: probably about the same cost
03:52 PM CaptHindsight: didn't find any on ebay
03:52 PM Eric__: there are companies that snatch them up
03:52 PM CaptHindsight: oh wait was in the wrong category
03:52 PM Eric__: one near me sells 5lpm for about $300
03:53 PM Eric__: people find them on craigslist and at garage sales for much cheaper
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: but then you don't get your hands on time with stuff
03:56 PM Eric__: but I get to make more bicycles
03:56 PM jymmmm: Creek Fire, Active 147,000 acres, zero percent contained... https://i.imgur.com/1SAjdRi.jpg
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: eventually you'll run out of forest
03:58 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Sadly. Blackout started at 2330 last night, until Wednesday 1900
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: you on your phone?
04:00 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: wdym?
04:00 PM CaptHindsight: current internet connection
04:00 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I have no power in my area, everyone is on generator.
04:01 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Ah, the DSL modem is running off the generrator
04:01 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
04:01 PM CaptHindsight: so they keep phone service up
04:01 PM CaptHindsight: rain and 60F here
04:01 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Yeah, not high voltage,
04:05 PM Thorhian: I just got my GT3 Misumi Pulleys :) They fit really well lol
04:06 PM skunkworks: yes - that one
04:06 PM skunkworks: heh - sorry. Just assumed I wasn't ssh'ed in.
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: Eric__: they only run 20-30 psi in the PVC canisters
04:07 PM Eric__: so the explosion will not liberate too many shards
04:08 PM Eric__: the noise on the utube seemed pretty energetic
04:09 PM veegee: Why are toe jacks so expensive? https://www.amazon.ca/Mophorn-hydraulique-orteils-trait%C3%A9-thermiquement/dp/B07GN7VFY7
04:10 PM veegee: 20 ton bottle jack can be had for $40
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: Proprietary Heat-Treated Steel
04:10 PM veegee: for the toe?
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: magic steel
04:10 PM veegee: no seriously
04:10 PM veegee: it's a $300 premium for the toe jack anywhere I look
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: what it says
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: I'll sell you a set for $500
04:11 PM veegee: By the way the machine rollers arrived, they're so awesome
04:11 PM veegee: the ones that work on the principle of "rolling pipes" as opposed to bearings on an axle
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, tough stuff
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71xHIOJgy8L.jpg
04:13 PM veegee: These ones: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0052PWAOM/
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: what you are paying extra for
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: that hunk of steel
04:14 PM veegee: Not worth $300 for that steel that's for damn sure
04:14 PM veegee: I'm going to DIY it
04:18 PM JT-Shop: andypugh, if you have a moment how did you get the flood pin in this O100 WHILE [#<_flood> EQ 0] (use the flood button to stop and save data)
04:20 PM andypugh: Did I do that?
04:27 PM Tom_L: 54F
04:31 PM JT-Cave: yea measuring a steady rest
04:44 PM roycroft: blah
04:44 PM roycroft: the wind has picked up, and the smoke is a lot worse
04:45 PM roycroft: it's a lot harder to breathe, and when i ran to market a few minutes ago the brief exposure outdoors made my eyes water
04:46 PM roycroft: fortunately the work i'm doing on my bench today is mostly fiddly stuff, not heavy lifting/whacking/moving stuff
04:49 PM XXCoder: definitely smokey here but not eye-watering
04:54 PM roycroft: it was bad this morning when i woke up
04:54 PM roycroft: it's gotten a lot worse
04:54 PM roycroft: it's still fairly dark outside
04:54 PM roycroft: and it was "snowing" ashes a while ago
04:54 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I cant talk right now but just to give you an update. I figure out where the short was. so that is now corrected. and the SERIAL inverface is working 1000x% better
04:55 PM _unreal_: I'm not getting active control of the motors though and they are not trying to hold in place.
04:55 PM XXCoder: :(
04:55 PM _unreal_: so I dont know if there is something I'm over looking if I have a wire wrong is there is a signal issue i dont know
04:55 PM XXCoder: hope fire is not going towards you
04:55 PM _unreal_: I'm mainly focusing on getting my daughters machine up and running right now
04:56 PM roycroft: no, the fires are far enough away
04:56 PM roycroft: it's just the smoke and ash
04:57 PM JT-Cave: crap, just noticed one of my hens has flystrike :(
04:57 PM _unreal_: flystrike?
04:57 PM XXCoder: so we have fall, winter, spring, summer and fire seasons
04:57 PM XXCoder: wonderful
04:57 PM XXCoder: whats flystrike?
04:57 PM _unreal_: I asked first
04:57 PM roycroft: california now has fire season, and really windy big fire season
04:58 PM roycroft: i may not get much done on my bench today
04:58 PM roycroft: this smoke is really affecting me
04:59 PM XXCoder: you have air filtered all face mask?
04:59 PM roycroft: but it's going to be like this most of the week, and i can't afford to wait until the weekend to do any serious work on it again
04:59 PM XXCoder: might help
04:59 PM roycroft: a mask helps a bit
04:59 PM roycroft: and i have been wearing one when i'm outside my office
04:59 PM XXCoder: i mean type for serious filteration like if youre working on wood to prevent allegy
05:00 PM XXCoder: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/kJRJmbWqvFE/maxresdefault.jpg this type
05:01 PM roycroft: i'll put one on when i head out to the shop
05:01 PM roycroft: that will pretty much guarantee that i won't be working for a long time today though - i can't stand to wear the thing for a prolonged period of time
05:01 PM roycroft: i'm almost ready to just get in my car and drive to where there is no smoke
05:02 PM roycroft: i would not have to go very far
05:02 PM roycroft: but i'll give the shop work a go for a bit and see what happens
05:04 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, do you cut it out?
05:05 PM XXCoder: wow googled it. nasty!
05:22 PM JT-Cave: bath in warm Epsom salt and keep the wound clean and treated with vetericyn
05:22 PM JT-Cave: pretty gross for sure
05:22 PM JT-Cave: so regular baths to keep the area clean and wound treatment until healed up
05:24 PM infornography: Hey guys whats going on in he.....
05:24 PM infornography: later
05:24 PM XXCoder: hibye infornography
06:14 PM JT-Cave: http://linuxcnc.org/
06:15 PM XXCoder: 2.8 release
06:15 PM XXCoder: whats new?
06:15 PM XXCoder: oh theres changelog
06:16 PM XXCoder: 9 spindles dang
06:16 PM XXCoder: 1000 tools!
06:16 PM XXCoder: thats good for huge machines
06:17 PM roycroft: well that really sucked
06:17 PM XXCoder: capive nut article link broken
06:17 PM roycroft: for the first part of my work i had to open the garage door and roll my jointer and thicknesser outside
06:18 PM roycroft: i did that work, but by the time i was finished those machines and everything just inside the garage door were covered in ash
06:18 PM JT-Cave: opps
06:18 PM roycroft: there are swirling clouds of ashes blowing down the street right now
06:18 PM XXCoder: wow! that heavu
06:18 PM roycroft: kind of like tumbleweeds
06:19 PM roycroft: anyway, i'm done with that
06:19 PM roycroft: the garage door is closed
06:19 PM roycroft: i turned on my dust extractor in the shop, and also the a/c, which does a pretty good job of filtering
06:19 PM roycroft: so hopefully the air will clear up in there somewhat
06:19 PM JT-Cave: XXCoder, refresh the page
06:20 PM roycroft: i was going to take some pics but i don't want to take a camera outside right now
06:20 PM roycroft: anyway, i need a big chisel right now and i have the one i need, but it has never been sharpened, and that will take me an hour or two
06:20 PM roycroft: so i should be ok with the door shut for the rest of the day
06:21 PM roycroft: and another evacuation order just came over the radio
06:21 PM JT-Cave: a sharp chisel is a safe chisel
06:21 PM roycroft: closer in now
06:21 PM roycroft: yes
06:21 PM zipper is now known as Guest3783
06:21 PM JT-Cave: wow
06:21 PM roycroft: a dull chisel is a dangerous chisel
06:21 PM roycroft: "closer in" is still 40 miles away
06:22 PM JT-Cave: yea but it can travel fast with the wind
06:23 PM roycroft: it won't get to the valley (hopefully)
06:24 PM roycroft: there are wide greenswards between the fire and the city
06:24 PM roycroft: it's relatively easy to stop a fire there
06:25 PM roycroft: it's in steep, tree-covered terrain that it's really hard to get a handle on things
06:25 PM roycroft: fortunately the area directly between the fire and us is the world's largest grass seed farming region
06:28 PM roycroft: our air quality index is literally off the charts right now
06:29 PM roycroft: https://www.lrapa.org
06:31 PM andypugh: > announcement
06:31 PM andypugh: 2.8.0 is out
06:32 PM andypugh: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/29-forum-announcements/39983-linuxcnc-2-8-0-is-released
06:36 PM hazzy-m: andypugh: hurray!!
06:38 PM Tom_L: andypugh, that's quite a new shopping list!
06:39 PM Tom_L: did rpi4 get put in with it?
06:39 PM Tom_L: separate iso i'm sure
06:40 PM andypugh: Yes: http://www.linuxcnc.org/iso/linuxcnc-2.8.0-pi4.zip
06:42 PM XXCoder: nice!
06:42 PM Tom_L: andypugh, thanks for all your efforts
06:47 PM andypugh: It was fun, I learned an awful lot. Though I have basically spent every spare hour on it since Easter. If I had known how little I knew that I would need to I might not have started.
06:47 PM veegee: Well looks like I'm building my own toe jack with the toe part using 4140 chromoly heat treated
06:48 PM veegee: need to figure out a way to reduce side load on the hydraulic cylinder
06:49 PM veegee: I guess some kind of box way would work
06:51 PM veegee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYfdJKIPMEw
06:51 PM veegee: Ah roller or ball bearing, perfect!
06:56 PM andypugh: You won’t go far wrong followig OxTools lead. I like his designs. (and, yes, I _do_ rate myself as a mechanical designer, but what I do now pays better)
07:03 PM XXCoder: andy good for us heh thanks for hard work!
07:08 PM CaptHindsight: \0/
07:19 PM andypugh: _completely_ off topic, but this is so good: https://youtu.be/u9jGGiqjwf4
07:22 PM cradek: yeah I kinda love it too
07:22 PM roycroft: andypugh: congratulations on getting the release pushed out
07:26 PM roycroft: and the aqi has gotten even worse
07:27 PM roycroft: i don't remember it ever being above 400 before, even during the biscuit fire summer
07:27 PM roycroft: but fortunately, my garage shop is a lot better with the two filtration systems on
07:28 PM * roycroft heads back out to do some more sharpening
07:29 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: I grew up around band leaders and musicians from that era...
07:29 PM CaptHindsight: it's funny when accomplished musicians put their spin on pop
07:30 PM cradek: andypugh: a rabbit hole
07:30 PM CaptHindsight: like watching Einstein teaching a HS physics class
07:31 PM andypugh: cradek: It is. Also rather amazing vintage voice: https://youtu.be/wAQ7autd61g
07:36 PM roycroft: you might check out pink martini on teh youtube if you like that stuff
07:36 PM roycroft: china forbes has an amazing voice and is a great performer
07:36 PM roycroft: i've seen them dozens of times, as they're from portland and used to perform in eugene quite frequently
07:37 PM roycroft: also, i'm starting to get concerned now, because the emergency alert evacuation warnings are coming in every 15-20 minutes now, and are getting closer and closer
07:38 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: how thick is the smoke?
07:38 PM roycroft: the one that just came in is a level 2 - meaning don't evacuate now, but be prepared, because it's likely going to happen - for sweet home, which is not in the foothills, but is at the edge of the valley
07:38 PM roycroft: capthindsight: it's very thick
07:38 PM roycroft: about an hour ago i could see a deep red glow where the sun should be
07:39 PM roycroft: that's the closest to the sun all day
07:39 PM roycroft: and it's fairly dark - it's not been much brighter than twilight all day
07:39 PM roycroft: aqi is at 464 as of a half hour ago
07:40 PM roycroft: as i said a few minutes ago, i don't recall it ever hitting 400 before
07:40 PM roycroft: even 300 is very rare
07:40 PM roycroft: and is the limit of the chart
07:40 PM CaptHindsight: how far are the fires from you now as the crow flies?
07:41 PM roycroft: 40 miles
07:41 PM andypugh: Well, unless you think you can do anything it seems (from here) that leaving early has no penalty, but leaving late might have
07:41 PM roycroft: and the wind is blowing directly from the big fire
07:42 PM roycroft: leaving early means going to a shelter with a bunch of other people
07:42 PM roycroft: which is not a good idea during a pendemic
07:42 PM roycroft: pandemic
07:42 PM roycroft: but more importantly
07:42 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: does the fire have a name, going to check the sats
07:42 PM andypugh: I mean just leave and keep going.
07:42 PM roycroft: the places that have evacuated so far are small towns
07:43 PM roycroft: there are places to shelter for those folks
07:43 PM roycroft: if it comes here close to a half million people would have to evacuate
07:43 PM roycroft: and there's really nowhere for us to go
07:43 PM andypugh: Miss the traffic, visit Mexico or something.
07:43 PM roycroft: i could go to california
07:43 PM roycroft: oh, wait, it's full of fires
07:43 PM roycroft: or i could go to washington
07:44 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: heh we can't even visit Mexico now
07:44 PM roycroft: which also has several fires
07:44 PM andypugh: Isn’t that on fire too?
07:44 PM roycroft: idaho has heaps of fires
07:44 PM CaptHindsight: snow in the rockies
07:44 PM roycroft: i don't know the name of the fire that is of the bigges concernt
07:44 PM roycroft: i'm looking it up
07:44 PM andypugh: Yeah, just decide to go on holiday.
07:45 PM Tom_L: hawaii
07:45 PM andypugh: Nunavit is probably fire-resistant.
07:45 PM roycroft: the aqi is bad even on the coast
07:45 PM Tom_L: let's go visit andy
07:46 PM Tom_L: they don't have fires.. it rains too much
07:46 PM andypugh: (nunavut)
07:46 PM roycroft: it's the beachie creek fire
07:47 PM andypugh: Yes, we get the odd moorland fire, but nothing that causes mass destructiion
07:47 PM roycroft: or maybe the santiam fire
07:47 PM roycroft: things are changing almost by the minute
07:48 PM roycroft: here's the real problem
07:48 PM roycroft: these fires are way beyond the capability of local firefighters to contain
07:48 PM roycroft: and most of our seasonal wildfire crews are down in california helping out there
07:49 PM Tom_L: they haven't sent in the national guard?
07:49 PM roycroft: the national guard can't put out fires
07:49 PM roycroft: all they can do is help with evacuations
07:49 PM roycroft: but our governor declared an emergency fire conflagration situation this afternoon
07:49 PM andypugh: In the 1950s the obvious answer would be a nuke. (might even work)
07:51 PM roycroft: there are even fires on the northern coast
07:51 PM roycroft: lincoln county, the only county in the state still on leel 1 lockdown due to the pandemic, has several fires, some of which are almost on the coast itself
07:52 PM roycroft: i irrigate my garden beds, but i don't believe in irrigating lawns
07:52 PM roycroft: it seems like a waste of water
07:53 PM XXCoder: i'd add water obly during nights
07:53 PM roycroft: but i'm about to go out and start watering the lawn, just in case we get some airborne smoldering embers later tonight
07:53 PM XXCoder: more water goes in soil and less into air
07:53 PM roycroft: yes, my irrigation system goes on at midnight and goes off at 7am
07:54 PM roycroft: i have several zones, and it cycles through them
07:54 PM roycroft: i also use drip irrigation and soaker hoses - no spraying in the eair
07:54 PM roycroft: air
07:54 PM roycroft: almost all the water i apply goes into the soil
07:54 PM roycroft: very very little evaporates directly
07:57 PM XXCoder: nice
07:58 PM roycroft: holy shit
07:58 PM roycroft: highway 126 was just closed in springfield
07:59 PM roycroft: 15 minutes from here
07:59 PM roycroft: the fire is not that close
07:59 PM roycroft: but that's awfully close for a road closure
08:00 PM roycroft: and lowell just got a level 1 (be ready) evacuation notice
08:00 PM roycroft: lowell is 20-25 minutes away
08:00 PM andypugh: Yeah, pick somewhere nice to go, and just go. Beat the rush.
08:00 PM roycroft: this is *way* too close for comfort
08:00 PM roycroft: i'm on the very western edge of town
08:01 PM roycroft: if it looks like we're in danger, i'm closer than almost everyone to an escape route
08:01 PM Rab: roycroft, I implore you to load your new workbench into your bug-out vehicle.
08:01 PM roycroft: i'm worried about a lot more than that bench
08:02 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.kezi.com/content/news/Crews-continue-fight-against-wildfire-east-of-Springfield-572352391.html
08:02 PM andypugh: Nobody ever regrets running away early. Nobody knows what those who run away too late thought…
08:02 PM JavaBean: roycroft: do you have your house painted with intumescence paint?? or any decently fire resistant paint?? do you have any trees within a 100foot radius of your house?? any bushes within same radius??? if either answer to the 3rd and 4th question is yes, GTFO
08:03 PM Rab: andypugh, thanks for 2.8!!
08:04 PM flyback: https://youtu.be/sRMMwpDTs5k?t=3029
08:04 PM flyback: love it

08:23 PM CaptHindsight: live fire map from nasa ^^
08:28 PM CaptHindsight: HWY 126 leads right to the fire
08:32 PM CaptHindsight: https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#d:2020-09-08..2020-09-09;l:street;@-122.6,44.0,11z
08:33 PM roycroft: well i was just out in the shop for ~20 minutes, and no new emergency alerts
08:33 PM roycroft: it's disconcerting, for sure
08:34 PM roycroft: when i need to detach from the outside world i listen to a local fine arts radio station that prides itself so much on not addressing current events that they even apologise for providing basic weather information
08:35 PM roycroft: but today, they've been interrupted 3-4x/hour by emergency alerts
08:36 PM roycroft: and i have a very sharp, shiny chisel now :)
08:42 PM XXCoder: :)
08:43 PM robotustra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGHTZC2_pz4
08:46 PM andypugh: robotustra: Still interested i gears?
08:53 PM andypugh: The Datron machine is rather good, I am curious about the toolholding.
08:59 PM robotustra: andypugh, yes, I would like to have one
08:59 PM robotustra: I mean a metal gear
08:59 PM JavaBean: solid?
09:00 PM robotustra: is it question to me?
09:01 PM andypugh: robotustra: What do you have? Making gears isn’t hard.
09:03 PM robotustra: I have g0704 like manual mill and I want T37 motor spur gear to be metal on my lathe. Better if it will be bronze SAE65
09:04 PM robotustra: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Milling-Machine-Sacrificial-Drive-Gear-Warco-WM16-Grizzly-G0704-Optimum-BF20/114231114754
09:04 PM andypugh: Do you have a 4th axis or manual dividing head?
09:04 PM robotustra: it is 10 mm of thickness, 15 mm ID, 5mm keyway
09:04 PM robotustra: I have, but I don't have a gear cutter arrangement
09:05 PM andypugh: Metal replacements exist, off the shelf.
09:05 PM robotustra: for this gear - I didn't find
09:05 PM robotustra: do you have a link?
09:05 PM andypugh: Little MachineShop?
09:05 PM robotustra: I don't know what is this
09:06 PM andypugh: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32630042899.html?spm=2114.12010615.8148356.29.6ec02568ZdpYkB
09:08 PM robotustra: it's reductor gear, not motor gear, and I already got it
09:09 PM robotustra: the motor gear ali sells is plastic too
09:09 PM andypugh: it might well be “sacrificial” for a reason
09:09 PM robotustra: namely T37 helical gear M1.25
09:09 PM robotustra: I know but I want a metal
09:10 PM robotustra: metal one
09:10 PM robotustra: I promice, I'll not brake my mill
09:10 PM robotustra: sacrificial parts are for loosers
09:10 PM robotustra: losers
09:10 PM robotustra: :)
09:11 PM andypugh: Maybe https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gear-Cutter-involute-Module-M1-25-No2-20-HSS-MADE-IN-USSR-OLD-STOCK-NEW/253840060878?hash=item3b1a0bf1ce:g:3tYAAOSwKqlbh7S1
09:12 PM roycroft: so robotustra is really donald trump
09:12 PM roycroft: dammit
09:12 PM roycroft: i was not going to comment on his metal gear thing again
09:12 PM roycroft: but i could not help myself
09:13 PM andypugh: full metal jacket potato
09:13 PM robotustra: andypugh, thank you, :) you propose me to make it myself :)
09:13 PM roycroft: so you x-ray every piece of metal that you put in your mill and every cutter before you install it?
09:13 PM andypugh: Why not? Isn;t that the point of having machine tools?
09:14 PM roycroft: you know 100% that nothing you ever feed your mill will have an undesired inclusion that might cause problems?
09:14 PM robotustra: you know, Carlin was right about murica
09:15 PM roycroft: every time you clamp something down on the mill table you calculate how much torque is required to hold it in place and use a torque wrench to ensure that you are doing it correctly?
09:15 PM andypugh: roycroft: To be fair, that’s never happened to me
09:15 PM robotustra: You have helmets against everything exept may by masturbation
09:15 PM roycroft: losers are people who make assumptions and ignore externalities
09:16 PM roycroft: that's actually really funny, robutustra
09:16 PM robotustra: I know the approximate range of radius and tools
09:16 PM andypugh: (And you are more likely to break the tool on a mill, Less so on a lathe,
09:16 PM robotustra: of cause
09:16 PM roycroft: because it's so totally wrong that it's inconceivable that people would think it's the case
09:17 PM robotustra: to replace a broken tool takes 1 min. to replace a sacrificial gear it takes 1 hour
09:17 PM roycroft: andypugh: the context of this is that robutustra wants to replace a sacrificial gear with a metal one
09:17 PM robotustra: I choose 1 min
09:17 PM roycroft: and swears that it's impossible for him to crash his mill
09:17 PM roycroft: because he's that good a machine operator
09:17 PM robotustra: I am
09:17 PM roycroft: so sacrificial parts are completely unnecessary
09:18 PM Rab: robotustra, have you broken the plastic gear before?
09:18 PM roycroft: he's not
09:18 PM andypugh: No, he claims to be prepared to take that risk.
09:18 PM roycroft: he's confessed that multiple times
09:18 PM robotustra: do you have sacrificial parts on bridgeport?
09:18 PM roycroft: no
09:18 PM robotustra: but why?
09:18 PM roycroft: he's nt claiming to be prepared to take that risk
09:18 PM robotustra: Rab, no
09:18 PM robotustra: I just want to replace them preventively
09:18 PM andypugh: <I don’t care, I am going to bed>
09:18 PM roycroft: he's claiming that there is no risk whatsoever under any cirumstance
09:19 PM roycroft: because he's better than everyone else
09:19 PM robotustra: in my appartment - yes
09:19 PM robotustra: roycroft, you just want to tell me that I'm a dumass
09:20 PM robotustra: and plastic is good
09:20 PM robotustra: how people was making mathines without plastic for 200 years?
09:21 PM Rab: Well, if the plastic gear has never broken...that could indicate a superior machine operator. ;)
09:21 PM * roycroft still believes in engineering and science over obstinacy
09:21 PM roycroft: or a proper machine design, rab
09:22 PM roycroft: no, i'm not telling you you're a dumbass at all
09:22 PM roycroft: i'm telling you that you have it somehow stuck in your mind that you have total control of all variables in a machining operation when you don't
09:23 PM roycroft: you're ignoring external factors
09:23 PM robotustra: I can say one thing - is the motor is underpowered - with comparison to the gears - the gear will never be broken if you'll not hit it with the hammer
09:23 PM roycroft: q.e.d.
09:23 PM robotustra: and it's exactly the case - I'd rather blow 10A fuse than brake a gear on this mill
09:23 PM roycroft: now it's time to make dinner :)
09:24 PM robotustra: the only external factor in here is me touching wheels
09:25 PM Rab: robotustra, consider that sacrificial parts are also meant for mechanical failures, not just a negligent operator. If a shaft seizes or a bearing disintegrates, you might rather replace an inexpensive gear than much more expensive components.
09:25 PM robotustra: I don't understand how it's possible to brake the mill if you fill with hands how metal resists the cutter
09:26 PM robotustra: ok, let's name that "expensive" components on grzzly mill :)
09:27 PM robotustra: I understand a sacrificial mounting plate or soft jaws
09:27 PM robotustra: but gears!
09:28 PM Rab: It sounds like the gears are expensive to your taste. Would you rather have the force which would break the plastic gear, distributed through the rest of your gear train?
09:29 PM robotustra: Rab, no, such gear does not exist on the market
09:29 PM robotustra: that's my problem
09:31 PM robotustra: I'm pretty sure it's "sacrificial" bullshit about this gear
09:32 PM Rab: robotustra, which country are you located in?
09:32 PM robotustra: canada
09:33 PM Rab: Tried McMaster-Carr?
09:33 PM robotustra: china just make a fortune on this "sacrificial" parts
09:33 PM robotustra: I tried everywhere
09:33 PM robotustra: I spend a week trying to find this gear in metal
09:34 PM robotustra: n'exister pas
09:36 PM robotustra: china is a kingdom of single-use things and propagator of "satrificial" things, becasue they get more money when things brake
09:36 PM roycroft: robotustra: i actually am trying to help you, not dis you
09:36 PM roycroft: "china" did not invent the concept of sacrificial parts
09:37 PM robotustra: it just wisely exploit it
09:37 PM roycroft: and what you are describing are not sacrificial parts
09:37 PM robotustra: widely
09:37 PM roycroft: you're describing consumable parts
09:37 PM roycroft: i'm questioning your basic premise
09:38 PM roycroft: if you had stated "i want to replace all the plastic parts that would be better done as metal parts without compromisnig the design of the machine" i'd agree with you
09:38 PM roycroft: but you said "i want to replace all plastic parts with metal parts, period"
09:38 PM robotustra: for me if you buy something more than 1 time because it was broken - it's equivalent
09:38 PM roycroft: and that's where i think you need to revisit things
09:39 PM roycroft: i have an old 7x14 mini lathe
09:39 PM roycroft: the kind that harbor freight, amongst others, sell
09:39 PM robotustra: roycroft, I want to replace it to prevent plastic gear failue
09:39 PM roycroft: i don't use it any more
09:39 PM robotustra: which is a matter of time only
09:39 PM roycroft: but the thing came wiht all plastic gears
09:39 PM robotustra: all gears have resource
09:39 PM roycroft: i got a metal change gear set
09:40 PM roycroft: because people were destoying the plastic gears
09:40 PM Rab: robotustra, this person replaced the sacrificial gear (and its helical partner) with metal spur gears, but with the goal and result of increasing the spindle speed: http://migration.g0704.com/Projects.html#gear%20mod
09:40 PM roycroft: but the machine was designed for the gears to fail before any other components
09:40 PM roycroft: so i kept one gear, that was always in the gear train, as plastic, so as to be the sacrificial gear
09:41 PM roycroft: i understand the desire to make the machine less prone to failures
09:41 PM Rab: Apparently the gear is helical, with an unusual pitch, so you might need to replace both gears as a set.
09:41 PM robotustra: Rab, I saw this post,
09:41 PM roycroft: but to completely dismiss the idea that there may be parts that are designed to fail to save the more expensive parts is a fallacy
09:42 PM roycroft: if you do research that indicates that this particular gear is not intended to be sacrificial, then replacing it with a metal gear (if you can find one) is great
09:43 PM roycroft: you said, though, that you did not do any such research, and want to replace it because you believe that all plastic parts are only used to ensure sales of replacement parts
09:43 PM roycroft: that's the thing with which i disagree
09:43 PM robotustra: I know what can satisfy you
09:44 PM robotustra: I will add a clutch which can slip with the hit
09:44 PM roycroft: well, that and the notion that plastic is inherently inferior to metal in all circumstances
09:44 PM robotustra: roycroft, your diner is ready
09:45 PM roycroft: i don't need to be satisfied
09:45 PM roycroft: i'm not replacing or not replacing plastic parts with metal parts
09:46 PM roycroft: i'm just trying to help you expand your way of thinking about things a bit
09:46 PM roycroft: and not because i think you're a dumbass
09:46 PM robotustra: roycroft, let me not listen to you, I'll make a metal gear and if it will brake in some time - I'll buy you a beer
09:46 PM roycroft: but because i like you and would like to see you grow
09:46 PM robotustra: and admit that I'm a sertified dumbass
09:47 PM robotustra: even more, I prefer to have Aluminium "sacrificial" gear instead of plastic one
09:48 PM robotustra: I suppose it will be more durable then plastic one
09:49 PM roycroft: for the record, i am neither pro-plastic nor anti-plastic
09:50 PM roycroft: i'm pro whatever is the best material for the design
09:51 PM robotustra: best material for metal gearbox for sacrificial gear is bronze
09:51 PM Rab: robotustra, considered sending this STL to Shapeways? https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2407753/apps
09:52 PM roycroft: and i sense that nothing else i say on this matter will have any affect on your thinking, so i'll try my best to extricate myself from any further imput on the matter
09:52 PM robotustra: deal
09:52 PM roycroft: but i won't promise, as i'm not a liar, but i am a human, full of weaknesses
09:53 PM robotustra: let's close this topic till the time I obtain and brake the thing
09:54 PM robotustra: my father told, you should make, brake and make it again to be sure the thing will work for a long time after
09:56 PM robotustra: Rab, this company does metal printing? what is the tolerances?
09:56 PM robotustra: I'm not sure that this STL contains correct involutes
09:57 PM robotustra: as soon as it's designed to conform the metal one
09:58 PM robotustra: but I might be wrong, looks wery nice
09:58 PM robotustra: very
10:02 PM roycroft: more evacuations were just ordered
10:02 PM Tom_L: looks like we're on the gear thing again....
10:03 PM robotustra: Tom_L, not any more
10:03 PM roycroft: this is starting to really stress me out, and i want to turn off the outside media, but i dare not
10:03 PM Tom_L: 2 days worth should about cover it!
10:04 PM robotustra: < roycroft> so robotustra is really donald trump
10:05 PM robotustra: :)
10:05 PM robotustra: I go sleep, good night
10:05 PM Tom_L: have a safe evening
10:06 PM Tom_L: i noticed metric gear cutter sets are readily available for cheap but imperial are not
