02:17 AM Loetmichel: mornin'
02:23 AM Loetmichel: hehe, coworker just now flashed a new software version in a controller board, tested it and started whistling... $me [hmm, i know that song. Hanibal Smith] "Am i right that the board works now?" "yes, but how do you know?" "because you a whistling the A-team theme." ;-)
03:12 AM Loetmichel: v
03:12 AM Loetmichel: maan, that song is catchy. now I am the one whistling "dip du dee, dah dah dah" all the time... :-)
04:07 AM Loetmichel: *MUHAHA* cowoker just came in late, took a coffee from the pot, sipped: "*brrr* Did you make that, michel?" "yes, why?" "Figures, you could use it as paint remover!" :-)
04:17 AM rs[m]1: I love it when a plan comes together!
04:18 AM XXCoder: I like it when the plan comes true
04:18 AM XXCoder: gonna love that triple translated one
04:47 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:48 AM XXCoder: wb
05:18 AM JT-Cave: sure glad I finally got all the information I needed to understand the APA102, it now works as expected
05:19 AM XXCoder: awesome!
05:32 AM JT-Cave: https://cpldcpu.wordpress.com/2014/11/30/understanding-the-apa102-superled/
06:13 AM Tom_L: morning
06:13 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:15 AM XXCoder: gray/gray text sigh
06:22 AM Tom_L: better than this: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Smartcam/macro_screen.jpg
06:22 AM Tom_L: an obvious bug in my cad cam program
06:22 AM XXCoder: fun heh
06:22 AM Tom_L: one screen only
06:23 AM Tom_L: i can hardly read it anymore
06:24 AM XXCoder: cant be fixed?
06:24 AM Tom_L: no
06:25 AM Tom_L: not without $$$$
06:26 AM Tom_L: when i write a macro, i just write the parameter on paper and know what order to call them
06:26 AM XXCoder: if you knew where color value is stored, could hex edit it but not easy lol
06:26 AM Tom_L: nope i tried
06:27 AM XXCoder: oh well :(
06:35 AM JT-Cave: wow I had to look twice to see that there is some text on that popup
06:35 AM XXCoder: its all basically same color to me lol
06:35 AM XXCoder: i had to go to max zoom on firefox to even read it
08:20 AM beachbumpete1: mornin
09:41 AM JT-Shop: morning Pete
09:42 AM * JT-Shop came close to rapid a 1/2" carbide end mill through the head of a 1/2 SHCS
09:44 AM Rab: Close, but no foul!
10:13 AM rs[m]1: spindle on? could work.
10:30 AM JT-Shop: yep spindle on, rapid would be way too much chip load lol
10:40 AM Thorhian: SHCS?
10:44 AM JT-Shop: Socket Head Cap Screw
10:55 AM cradek: no worry, the screw would have been fine
11:12 AM JT-Shop: I'm thinking it would have a divot for sure
01:45 PM andypugh: (No offence to US members, I am not taking a position on what is being reported) But this article makes a really nice job of inverting “first-world reporting on third world” news stories: https://www.thaienquirer.com/13861/foreign-affairs-unrest-continues-for-a-seventh-day-in-former-british-colony/
01:50 PM CaptHindsight: great job
01:51 PM robotustra: former british colony now is called cryptocolony
01:51 PM robotustra: :)
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: honestly written from an outsiders perspective
01:59 PM robotustra: June 2, man
01:59 PM robotustra: old news
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: 100% accurate, but reads like it's the Onion
02:04 PM robotustra: is there any small table shaper machine exist?
02:06 PM robotustra: i like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU9IC0Lh-9w
02:19 PM Rab: andypugh, very droll.
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCUkJydSmdA 30 minute video for a few sentence explanation
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: "Get your parts to run true in a non adjustable chuck. "
02:27 PM robotustra: it's all about the murica
02:27 PM robotustra: try to make show of nothing
02:27 PM andypugh: robotustra: There used to be, but I don’t think anyone makes them now.
02:28 PM robotustra: Old Tony?
02:28 PM robotustra: he does it every time
02:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53994198 BBC spin on the Thai scandal
02:29 PM andypugh: robotustra: There is a section on shapers here: http://www.lathes.co.uk
02:30 PM andypugh: Perfecto, for example.
02:30 PM andypugh: http://www.lathes.co.uk/perfecto/page2.html
02:34 PM FinboySlick: robotustra: the only 'bad' thing I could say about Old Tony is the fact that he uses Mach4.
02:37 PM robotustra: yes, he should use Mach3
02:38 PM FinboySlick: robotustra: I think he does on his router.
02:38 PM robotustra: :)
02:38 PM FinboySlick: CaptHindsight: I should have listened to you about how the video wasn't worth 30 minutes.
02:38 PM andypugh: He popped on the LinuxCNC forum and was talking about using LinuxCNC. Then the Mach4 guys gave him a load of servos for free////
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: FinboySlick: do I lie? :p
02:39 PM FinboySlick: andypugh: Haha! That part of the story was left out of the video.
02:39 PM andypugh: No, it was in one of the videos.
02:39 PM FinboySlick: The part about getting free servos, yes. Not the part about considering linuxCNC
02:40 PM FinboySlick: (at least as I remember it)
02:40 PM andypugh: No, you are right, LinuxCNC wasn’t mentioned
02:41 PM FinboySlick: andypugh: My guess on Tony's thought process: "Stefan uses LCNC, he's way smarter than I am, I probably can't handle it."
02:42 PM JT-Shop: wow UPS delivered a 6k box a day early...
02:53 PM FinboySlick: https://archive-server.liveatc.net/klax/KLAX-Final-Aug-31-2020-0130Z.mp3 5:20 in. "Only in LA"
02:57 PM Deejay: gn8
03:21 PM JT-Shop: finally got everything back in stock...
03:35 PM robotustra: somebody should teach Old Tony how to use linux cnc
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: FinboySlick: jet pack sighting?
03:36 PM FinboySlick: CaptHindsight: Yup.
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: what time in the clip?
03:36 PM FinboySlick: 5:25, roughly.
03:36 PM roycroft: or just ignore this old tony
03:36 PM roycroft: he is quite irritating
03:37 PM roycroft: i can't watch his videos
03:37 PM FinboySlick: I love 'em.
03:51 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, hows the bench coming along?
03:53 PM roycroft: slowly but steadily
03:54 PM roycroft: not a really big deal, but today at lunch i applied finish to a few parts of the undercarriage that will not be accessable once i install the bench top and hardware
03:54 PM roycroft: it's the first finish i've put on it
03:55 PM roycroft: after work i'll dimension the walnut end cap to final size, and then i can start laying out the opening for the wagon vise hardware
03:56 PM roycroft: while there will still be a lot of work to do after that hardware is installed, once i get that done i can do the final assembly of the bench top pieces to the undercarriage
03:56 PM roycroft: and at that point i can move the bench in place and actually start using it to finish building it
03:57 PM roycroft: hopefully by the end of this weekend i'll be at that point
04:01 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
04:02 PM JT-Shop: cool, I need to look at them in detail... from the outside all the parts are not obvious how they work
04:07 PM roycroft: come to think of it, it's going to take several hours to sand the bottoms of the bench top pieces, and then i need to apply finish before i do the final installation, so it may not happen by the end of this weekdn
04:07 PM roycroft: it may be the end of next weekend
04:08 PM JT-Shop: do you know of any plans for a smaller version that might not take too long to build as a starter bench?
04:20 PM roycroft: there are lots of bench plans out there
04:20 PM roycroft: it depends on what kind of bench you want
04:21 PM JT-Shop: that's the problem I don't know what I want/need
04:21 PM roycroft: i think the split top roubo is going to be the perfect bench for me, but that may not be the case for you
04:21 PM roycroft: i would recommend not buying the benchcrafted vise hardware for your first one
04:21 PM roycroft: that stuff cost me $725
04:21 PM JT-Shop: ouch
04:21 PM roycroft: it's beautiful stuff
04:22 PM JT-Shop: I bet it is
04:22 PM roycroft: but if you're not sure what kind of bench will work best for you i'd not spend that kind of money on the vises
04:22 PM JT-Shop: I'll do some searching in the morning during free time
04:22 PM roycroft: probably some bolt-on vises would be best for the first bench
04:23 PM roycroft: something like this:
04:23 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/Record-52-1-2ED-Release-Woodworkers/dp/B0000223R5
04:23 PM roycroft: it's a lot cheaper then the benchcrafted
04:23 PM roycroft: and is quick and easy to install - you can install it in a couple hours
04:24 PM roycroft: vs. the tens of hours for the benchcrafted vises
04:24 PM roycroft: and where you live, i'd seriously consider making a bench out of southern yellow pine
04:25 PM roycroft: it's a very hard wood, quite dense, and even though it's technically a "softwood", it's more than durable enough for a nice workbench
04:25 PM roycroft: we just don't see it here - if i wanted to use it i'd have to ship it in from back east and it would cost a fortune
04:25 PM JT-Shop: I can get southern yellow pine in 2 x 12 lumber but when you rip cut it turns into a bow
04:25 PM roycroft: but it should be available as construction lumber in your pard of the world
04:26 PM JT-Shop: yea 2 x 12 usually
04:26 PM roycroft: 2x12 is more stable than smaller dimension wood
04:26 PM roycroft: but if it's pretzel wood then it won't work for you
04:27 PM JT-Shop: maybe I just grabbed the wrong one but it looked almost quarter sawn then I ripped it an wow
04:27 PM roycroft: i considered using douglas fir, but to get good quality fir was almost the same price as the ash that i went with
04:27 PM roycroft: paul sellers made a nice bench out of plywood
04:28 PM roycroft: you might check out his videos on that
04:28 PM roycroft: keep in mind - i've been wanting to build a really nice bench for over 40 years
04:28 PM JT-Shop: thanks I'll check it out in the morning... just linked myself
04:28 PM roycroft: i've had a lot of time to think about what i want
04:29 PM roycroft: but about 20 years ago i started actually building one
04:29 PM JT-Shop: wow you must be older than me lol
04:29 PM roycroft: it was going to be a scandanavian bench, i.e. tage frid style
04:29 PM roycroft: i started building it, but almost immediately had second thoughts on the design
04:30 PM roycroft: and i stopped before i got too deeply into it
04:30 PM roycroft: i had actually purched ~150bf of birch for it
04:30 PM roycroft: purchased
04:30 PM roycroft: i ended up using that wood on other projects over the years
04:30 PM JT-Shop: time to tend to the chickens for a bit
04:30 PM roycroft: and a few years later started reading about roubo benches
04:31 PM roycroft: then maybe 5-6 years ago i started hearing about split top roubos
04:31 PM roycroft: and decided that was what i really wanted
04:31 PM roycroft: and that's what i am building
04:31 PM roycroft: i'm 100% convinced it's going to be perfect for me
04:31 PM roycroft: but it took me many, many years to figure that out
04:32 PM roycroft: so if you haven't put a whole lot of thought into what you really want, i'd say go for something inexpensive and easy to build
04:32 PM roycroft: and figure that you'll learn a lot about what you want and what you don't want with that bench
04:32 PM roycroft: then maybe go for something a bit nicer
04:33 PM roycroft: i've been working with a cheap harbor freight bench that i've modified quite a bit
04:33 PM roycroft: and if you don't want to spend a lot of time building it, you can buy a benchtop from a place like woodcraft, and just build the undercarriage for it and add vises
04:34 PM roycroft: that would be quick and easy, but not as inexpensive as building the whole thing on your own
04:36 PM roycroft: https://www.woodcraft.com/products/24-x-60-laminated-maple-bench-top-70-lbs
04:36 PM roycroft: that would be ok
04:40 PM Tom_L: looks like a kitchen cutting board
04:40 PM JT-Shop: I want an end vise
04:40 PM Tom_L: so...
04:40 PM Tom_L: i went out to see if we could figure out what's wrong with my bud's cnc
04:40 PM Tom_L: having 2 identical machines was a plus
04:41 PM JT-Shop: did you figure it out?
04:41 PM Tom_L: i suspected the data cable or the uart. turns out it was the data cable
04:41 PM Tom_L: but
04:41 PM Tom_L: i replaced the D25 connector on the end and beep tested all the connecions twice and thoroughly inspected it
04:42 PM Tom_L: and it didn't work
04:42 PM Tom_L: the plug going to the motherboard was an oddball (i don't know what they are) 3 row plug and half went to a card reader DB25
04:42 PM Tom_L: so we pulled the cable from the other cnc and tried it and it worked fine
04:43 PM Tom_L: tried this cable in both cncs and it didn't work either place
04:43 PM Tom_L: the problem _is_ the cable but we can't find what it is
04:43 PM Tom_L: went thru it pin for pin
04:44 PM JT-Shop2: odd
04:44 PM Tom_L: unless there's some jumpers in the 3 row connector to the motherboard that came loose i have no clue
04:44 PM Tom_L: and i didn't have a diagram for that
04:44 PM roycroft: jt-shop: first you need to determine what you want to do with the bench - is it going to be for joinery, assembly, or both?
04:45 PM Tom_L: i figured the db25 was worn out because it's so old
04:45 PM Tom_L: not the case
04:45 PM roycroft: for joinery you need to figure out how you're going to hold the work
04:45 PM roycroft: how will you hold a board to work on its face, on its edge, and on its end?
04:45 PM Tom_L: he's gonna call around and see if he can locate a cable
04:46 PM roycroft: for assembly you will need to figure out how you're going to clamp/square up/fixture your work while assembling
04:47 PM roycroft: the one i'm building is primarily a joinery bench, but since i'll be working on some fairly small pieces generally, i can use it for assembly as well
04:47 PM roycroft: the split top really helps with assembly
04:48 PM roycroft: the split is just wide enough for me to fit a parallel clamp jaw through, so i can clamp from the middle of the bench as well as from the edges
04:50 PM roycroft: mine is also deeper than a joinery bench usually is - it's about 26" deep, which is also helpful for doing assembly
04:50 PM roycroft: a strictly joinery bench does not need to be more than 18" deep or so
04:50 PM roycroft: and anything deeper than what i'm building is not at all useful - the back would be beyond easy reach
05:05 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, right now I need to step up from a piece of plywood on sawhorses and my catch all bench on an old convayor frame with all my shorts on top of it
05:06 PM JT-Shop: I need a way to hold parts while I sand, for assembly I have a collection of bar clamps some nice some pos
05:08 PM JT-Shop: I have some Dubuque bar clamps that I like better than pipe bar clamps
05:09 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, can't take the 3 row connector apart?
05:09 PM Tom_L: i did
05:10 PM Tom_L: didn't see anything unusual but i didn't have a diagram of it either
05:10 PM Tom_L: it's not exposed to traffic like the DB25 on the side of the cnc
05:10 PM Tom_L: so i would be surprised if it had a problem
05:12 PM JT-Shop: steel is up 2" x 2" x 11ga square is $36.48 a stick, last year it seems like it was 20 or 25 dollars
05:12 PM Tom_L: it _was_ highly populated with wires
05:12 PM Tom_L: i'm sure some were jumpers, the rest were rs232 and tape reader
05:12 PM JT-Shop: spaghetti makes it tough
05:13 PM Tom_L: i didn't see anything loose
05:13 PM JT-Shop: any nicks on the cover?
05:13 PM Tom_L: none
05:14 PM Tom_L: the db25 mounts to the side of the cnc though and gets plugged in alot
05:14 PM Tom_L: replacing that didn't help at all
05:14 PM Tom_L: i thought maybe some of the pins were stretched out
05:20 PM JT-Shop: damn naphtha stinks but it cleans the grease off of tubing well
05:23 PM Tom_L: leaves a film but yes
05:25 PM JT-Shop: so long as I don't get filthy dirty just trying to handle it I'm ok with a film
05:28 PM * JT-Shop wonders if he looks like Ray Charles when he flies FPV...
