01:43 AM veek: how do you use something like this (lifting belt) https://i.imgur.com/urX9oTm.png
01:50 AM rmu: veek: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie_down_strap
01:51 AM jymmmm: ratchet strap
01:53 AM veek: ah thanks
02:12 AM CaptHindsight: if you use them properly you can lift with them, attached to a crane
02:21 AM rmu: veek: get a rigging sling for lifting purposes, shouldnt be expensive
02:29 AM CaptHindsight: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31DIelVTpsL._QL70_ML2_.jpg
02:30 AM XXCoder: we have barrel lifter thingy for forklifts. that is ... dangerous and you cant even tip it
02:30 AM XXCoder: the lfter thing can tip over. perfect for emptying chips in barrels
02:32 AM CaptHindsight: https://images.homedepot-static.com/productImages/a3658c67-2390-44d5-81c2-9d2e2f85d733/svn/forearm-forklift-lifting-equipment-ff000012-fa_1000.jpg
02:32 AM CaptHindsight: they say it lifts 800 lbs but it never lifts more than 100-200 for me
05:17 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:17 AM XXCoder: yo
05:41 AM JT-Cave: I built a door for the chicken run yesterday but screwed up the math somehow and it's too narrow so gotta take it apart and start over this morning
05:42 AM XXCoder: ouch
05:42 AM XXCoder: revenge of the math ;)
05:42 AM JT-Cave: just need to figure out how to disable screen blanking in X and a couple of minor things for the coop controls
05:43 AM JT-Cave: yea and I even used a calculator lol
05:43 AM JT-Cave: the opening is 36" wide and the desired width of the door was 3/8" under that
05:43 AM XXCoder: did some variable get missed?
05:44 AM JT-Cave: I used 2x4's full length of the height with 2x4's for cross members somehow I cut them too small
05:45 AM JT-Cave: but I get a bit dyslexic with numbers from time to time so I assume I reversed a couple of numbers in my head
05:45 AM XXCoder: did you use 2x4 as size? because most store ones are understized
05:45 AM XXCoder: undersized*
05:46 AM rmu: JT-Cave: call "xdg-screensaver reset" from cron
05:46 AM JT-Cave: these are pressure treated and I measured both of them the subtracted that from the length of the cross pieces
05:47 AM JT-Cave: rmu, I'd rather just figure out how to turn it off permanently
05:49 AM XXCoder: theres lock screen settings
05:49 AM XXCoder: you can install one of lock screens and switch it away from screensaver
05:51 AM rmu: JT-Cave: i was being sarcastic after reading too much mpv code. there they resort to such tactics if running under GNOME.
05:52 AM XXCoder: jt hmm ok heh
05:52 AM rmu: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/commit/c498b2846af0ee8835b9144c9f6893568a4e49c6
05:53 AM rmu: should have some pointers how to disable the screensaver nowadays (xset -dpms and the like don't seem to work any more)
05:53 AM XXCoder: i forgot what I used to move from xfce lock screen to xscreensaver
05:53 AM XXCoder: xfce lock screen locks up once a while and i got sick of it.
05:54 AM JT-Cave: yea I need to search by posts from last year they keep changing shit
05:55 AM XXCoder: t what distro you using?
05:56 AM JT-Cave: raspberry pi os lite so I think that is debian 9 or something like that
05:56 AM rmu: JT-Cave: xdg-screensaver suspend <X11 window id> should do the job
05:56 AM XXCoder: lock screen default lightdm
05:57 AM XXCoder: jt in settings manager find "Session and Startup"
05:57 AM XXCoder: thats how you can change login stuff
05:57 AM XXCoder: or just entirely disable login
05:57 AM JT-Cave: I'm using openbox
05:57 AM JT-Cave: pretty blank lol
05:58 AM XXCoder: slock is best for openbox apparently
05:59 AM JT-Cave: slock?
05:59 AM XXCoder: yeah lock screen if you rather use that than screensaver
06:00 AM JT-Cave: I don't want to lock the screen or blank it ever
06:00 AM XXCoder: vim ~/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml
06:00 AM XXCoder: thats openbox apparently?
06:00 AM XXCoder: a method to change lock or screenbsaver
06:00 AM XXCoder: wait might not be openbox
06:01 AM XXCoder: it is
06:03 AM JT-Cave: just installing over again to test my instructions not quite to openbox yet
06:03 AM XXCoder: cool
06:03 AM XXCoder: i want to try that out evenuallyu
06:03 AM JT-Cave: file:///home/john/github/rpi/docs/build/html/lite-install.html
06:04 AM XXCoder: okay ill hack into your computer for that
06:04 AM XXCoder: ;)
06:04 AM XXCoder: unfortunately cant access your local file
06:04 AM JT-Cave: sunrise here and the chickens are awake
06:04 AM JT-Cave: oh crap wrong page
06:05 AM JT-Cave: https://jethornton.github.io/rpi/lite-install.html
06:06 AM XXCoder: nice
06:06 AM XXCoder: saved link for later
06:08 AM JT-Cave: I build and test local then push my changes to github and travis publishes it
06:10 AM XXCoder: nice. also good idea to test steps
06:11 AM XXCoder: i found few ones to be crap sometimes because person didnt follow own instructions step by step so theres some missing
06:11 AM JT-Cave: yea a bunch of crap out there, that's why I follow mine a few times to catch typo's and mistokes
06:16 AM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/iDm4HsOqbs8 at 18 min they used 3d pen to fix a headlight heh
06:19 AM Tom_L: morning
06:19 AM XXCoder: yo
06:19 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:20 AM JT-Cave: it's already 79°F
06:21 AM Tom_L: 71 here
06:21 AM XXCoder: will be 67f
06:28 AM Tom_L: pretty sure the humidity is alot higher than the temp right now
06:28 AM veek: for riveting which one would you buy a 9.5" 10.5" or 10" or "double hold"
06:28 AM veek: total newbie to riveting
06:29 AM andypugh: I don’t even understand the question, and I have been rivetting for decades
06:30 AM pjm: thanks folks for the words of wisdom on lead-screw compensation, i've just done my x-axis and now its compensating, its great!!
06:30 AM pjm: i'll calm down a bit then have a go at Y
06:30 AM Tom_L: how bad was it?
06:31 AM veek: andypugh, https://i.imgur.com/l8lBdmC.png
06:31 AM Tom_L: how big are the rivets you plan to use?
06:32 AM Tom_L: are they steel or aluminum?
06:32 AM _unreal_ is now known as Guest19279
06:32 AM andypugh: Ah, right, that sort of rivets.
06:32 AM _unreal_: sup
06:32 AM Tom_L: pop rivets
06:32 AM _unreal_: ok I have not gotten ONE of the chips re-programmed
06:33 AM _unreal_: what a pain. I had to move everything into the other room just to use the computer that worked before and its working again
06:33 AM _unreal_: also just discovered one of my @#%#@$#$#@! ICSP headers had a cold solder joint much to my "" delight "" trying to fix that Mf'er
06:34 AM andypugh: The double-handled ones are best for big rivets with good access. If you are only going to have one then I would go for the R-005
06:34 AM veek: andypugh, thanks :)
06:35 AM andypugh: But solid rivets are so much prettier.
06:35 AM Tom_L: stronger too
06:35 AM Tom_L: they're solid, not hollow
06:36 AM Tom_L: for most things that may not matter but if you're in a tube at 30k ft it might
06:41 AM veek: what about these wire brushes - just buy the cup Twisted wire thingy? any use of golden or wheel? https://i.imgur.com/KWK1Vqm.png
06:43 AM pink_vampire: veek: get the pneumatic riveter
06:52 AM veek: pink_vampire, u'd need an air compressor
06:52 AM veek: I have 0 experience building anything
06:53 AM veek: i've just read Ettlinger and forgotten most of it.. so..
06:53 AM pink_vampire: so did you ended up here?
06:54 AM veek: use linux, interested in metal working, do programming
06:54 AM veek: i mean i have used a drill and done welding once or twice.. and filing.. etc
06:55 AM veek: etc ==> cutting mild steel
06:57 AM _unreal_: DID IT DONE!!!!! i GOT MY hello world with the ve7it controllers
06:57 AM _unreal_: finally
06:59 AM _unreal_: andypugh, I couldnt agree more big handle rivet guns are the best. I do have a nice swivel head version that lets me get into tight corners but I've never been a fan of how much pressure it takes to run the rivet AND weak ones tend to break there stem if the pull auction isnt fast and smooth.
06:59 AM _unreal_: SOOOO damn happy
06:59 AM _unreal_: now my cnc machine can start to come to life
07:07 AM veek: _unreal_, how did you learn all that - via books? or workshop irl?
07:31 AM _unreal_: ?
07:32 AM _unreal_: veek not sure what your revering to
07:32 AM _unreal_: via? books
07:34 AM veek: _unreal_, i'm just trying to figure out how you knew that 'weak ones tend to break there stem if the pull auction isnt fast and smooth.' it seems all very mysterious to me
07:35 AM _unreal_: they do that by an auction called exceeding the rate of change
07:36 AM _unreal_: if you pull a pop rivit to slow the stem will stretch and break at the wrong location more often then not
07:37 AM _unreal_: IF you pull the pop rivet at its designed force and speed. it will almost always break at its designed location which is a slight crimp just aft of the expansion ball at the end of the pin sitting inside of the back of the rivet the sleeve
07:38 AM _unreal_: common problem with aluminum rivits
07:43 AM veek: _unreal_, what I meant was, is there a book that explains power tool accessories similar to https://i.imgur.com/Mpi9Q5J.png (nicely categorized, with the various grits available and dimensioning for drill bits (both wood and machine) explained - all in one place)
07:44 AM veek: that's from Ettlinger and he has a section on rivets but it's very basic
07:44 AM _unreal_: plenty and I dont know any off the top of my head. I would suggest getting an engineers reference book
07:44 AM _unreal_: and home depot/lowes handy tools books
07:45 AM _unreal_: Harbor freight has some nice reference books as well
07:59 AM Pro_El: i am bulding new setup and can some of you pointed me on Live - CD iso with Debian and default 2.8 LCNC , I reed on mail that andypugh prepare one minimal setup, any update on process..
08:01 AM andypugh: I can upload the test iso, but be aware that it is using the BuildBot version of 2.8, so will offer to update rather often (possibly a few times a day)
08:03 AM Pro_El: that is not problem, it is test machine so i may share some expirience
08:16 AM _unreal_: so I can confirm I'm getting comuncation with the servo controller
08:43 AM andypugh: Pro_El: http://www.linuxcnc.org/temp/2.8test3.iso
09:06 AM jymmmm: good morning
09:06 AM jymmmm: andypugh: Got MD5/SHA1 ?
09:07 AM andypugh: No
09:17 AM JavaBean: meh, sha512 is the minimum you should use
09:18 AM SpeedEvil: md5+sha1 isjust fine
09:19 AM SpeedEvil: Though md5 is just fine for checksumming if your worry is corruption
09:20 AM JavaBean: considering how many bad iso's i have grabbed that passed md5 checksumming... and bittorent's checksumming... i don't bother with such a low checksum
09:20 AM SpeedEvil: yeah - that's not the issue.
09:21 AM SpeedEvil: The issue there is bit errors between the time the checksum was made and when it was downloaded commonly
09:22 AM JavaBean: not really, maybe... for me it was redownload after freeing up ram. then check the sums higher than md5/sha1. because even when the passed md5/sha1 they would still be corrupted
09:24 AM Pro_El: Thank you andypugh i will install this iso now..
11:05 AM _unreal_: damn looks like I did screw up one of my controllers :(
11:06 AM _unreal_: I dont know how but the connections for the Y motor are laying loose. I checked and cleaned everything. some how a bolt was stuck to the bottom of the wire jump and shorted out the Y controller. sigh
11:06 AM _unreal_: really really really dont want to remove that mofo
11:06 AM _unreal_: sigh
11:06 AM _unreal_: and I dont recall if I have an extra chip
11:07 AM _unreal_: I dont think I do
11:09 AM rmu: current limit in motor driver doesn't hurt
11:33 AM _unreal_: rmu are you talkin gto me?
01:05 PM _unreal_: ve7it, hello
01:05 PM _unreal_: I just got serial console to work
01:06 PM _unreal_: ve7it, when your around I could use a hand getting the settings working.
01:07 PM ve7it: _unreal_, good work....
01:07 PM _unreal_: hello
01:07 PM _unreal_: one sec let me switch to the other computer
01:07 PM ve7it: glad the serial problem is sorted
01:09 PM Guest19279: oh i'm still active on this computer
01:09 PM Guest19279: so ve7it ya its getting serial term
01:10 PM _unreal_ is now known as Guest82965
01:11 PM Guest19279 is now known as _unreal_
01:11 PM ve7it: have you powered up the drive... is the motor holding position?
01:11 PM _unreal_: no the moment I turn it on it just goes in one direction and I'm 99% sure I killed one of the drivers
01:12 PM _unreal_: I dont know how but there was a hidden bolt stuck to the bottom of the Y motor junction for wires
01:12 PM _unreal_: I cleaned everytrhing was totally hidden
01:12 PM _unreal_: so i'm sure my Y op amp is blown
01:13 PM ve7it: a bolt could do it! Not so much much with motor issues as the driver is a current limited drive
01:14 PM _unreal_: it was stuck to it and I dont know WHAT glued it? dumb founded
01:14 PM _unreal_: regardless I can mess with Y
01:14 PM _unreal_: err x
01:14 PM ve7it: work with another axis until you get something kind of operational
01:14 PM _unreal_: when I power on X just moves endlessly
01:14 PM _unreal_: in one direction
01:14 PM ve7it: usually a sign of encoder or motor connection polarity
01:15 PM _unreal_: would that be an AB issue? or a settings issue right off the bat? also everything is default values in the dspics
01:15 PM ve7it: for now swap the 2 motor wires if that is easy
01:16 PM _unreal_: I'm suposed to be picking mangos right now but its pouring out. picking for the neighbors they are much older
01:17 PM ve7it: no mangos grow here... blueberries are just about ready... balckberries in a couple of weeks
01:20 PM _unreal_: just switched the AB still going one direction
01:20 PM _unreal_: switching wires I have to add blade connectors kind of hard wired ARG...
01:20 PM ve7it: ok... lets see if the encoder inputs are working
01:20 PM _unreal_: ok.. pulling up console
01:21 PM _unreal_: ok console is up and running motor power is unplugged
01:22 PM _unreal_: ?
01:24 PM ve7it: use the s command
01:24 PM ve7it: for status
01:25 PM ve7it: if pic and encoder have power, you should see a snapshot of the servo loop activity
01:25 PM _unreal_: msg'ed the results
01:27 PM _unreal_: I have a hantek 2d42 scope just dont know how to use the scope features
02:01 PM t4nk_freenode: bleh, knowing about scopes when you have a scope is overrated anyhow
02:37 PM t4nk_freenode: ok: that 2d42... not such a great coaster :((
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: 2d42 costers, i stocked up on free AOL CD's, I'm set until 2065 at least
02:43 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.amazon.com/YEAPOOK-Handheld-Oscilloscope-Professional-Bandwidth/dp/B07XBL4BTL I almost want one of these so I can say YEAPOOK
02:44 PM t4nk_freenode: I lost all my cd coasters at some point, I had multiple lifetimes worth of demo's
02:46 PM t4nk_freenode: lol
02:46 PM t4nk_freenode: if you buy a yeapook...
02:46 PM t4nk_freenode: I will buy a quifmat :)
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: there's another called ICQUANZX
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: they are just using random letters now
02:48 PM t4nk_freenode: ... like the asian companies now making their way onto amazon!
02:48 PM t4nk_freenode: ordered sth the other day, from the vendor: CHINGPANGPOKJANGQUNDONGYAMANI(etc.)
02:48 PM t4nk_freenode: endoresed buy amazon
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.amazon.com/Lab-Oscilloscopes/b/ref=dp_bc_aui_C_5?ie=UTF8&node=393269011
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: look at the brands
02:50 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe HANMATEK sounds nice and bonafide
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: sounds like Manga characters
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: resurrection feature? https://www.amazon.com/WASP-Delta-2040-Impresora-arcilla/dp/B083TTY8J5/ref=sr_1_21_sspa
02:55 PM t4nk_freenode: white and anglo-saxon too
02:56 PM t4nk_freenode: lol
02:56 PM t4nk_freenode: it seems to churn out .... 10ct-coffee cups..
02:56 PM t4nk_freenode: at least 2 per hour!
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.3dwasp.com/en/professional-3d-printer-delta-wasp-3mt-industrial/
02:59 PM CaptHindsight: getting fair prices for these
03:15 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: GET EM ALL
06:01 PM perry_j1987: hows it going guys
06:01 PM jymmmm: hot
06:03 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, sittin on ice blocks?
06:04 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: I just turned on the AC about 30m ago. Started fine, but I can hear it be a little different than normal now
06:06 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: But I do have 80lbs of frozen water jugs in the freezer too :)
06:10 PM JavaBean: only 80lbs?>?? that's a small fridge for someone like you
06:10 PM JavaBean: ;p
06:11 PM jymmmm: JavaBean: ran out of jugs
06:12 PM jymmmm: JavaBean: and freezer space
06:12 PM JavaBean: makes sense... those x gallon jugs you can get for camping work good
06:12 PM JavaBean: i hope you "ran out of freezer space" because the rest was food
06:14 PM jymmmm: Oh no, I get/use 1 gallon bottled water, then just save and repurpose the jugs.
06:15 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/c4m3cRdDILc kinda wtf
06:15 PM XXCoder: why not just have center handle?
06:16 PM XXCoder: same set of gearing would work
06:17 PM jdh: to turn from either side?
06:17 PM JavaBean: ah, that video/channel. been a long time since i watched that
06:17 PM XXCoder: i suppose but meh
06:25 PM jdh: why didn't he drill/etc more of the stuff on the router
06:27 PM jdh: his table saw/lathe thing is pretty funny
06:29 PM XXCoder: yeah odd. I suppose good if no room for lathe
06:32 PM jdh: seems to work and probably faster
06:33 PM XXCoder: less precise too
06:36 PM jymmmm: I like the saw lathe
06:37 PM jymmmm: chop saw lathe???
06:38 PM jymmmm: angle grinder lathe?
06:38 PM XXCoder: that one'd be perfect for metals lol
06:45 PM jymmmm: Yeah, even if you wanted to cut like a half moon in tubing
06:47 PM XXCoder: you cn definitely make grinder lathe though
06:47 PM XXCoder: make very high precision rods
06:48 PM XXCoder: or hex or whatever
06:50 PM veegee: CaptHindsight god damn I love my forklifts
06:51 PM veegee: that rotating head one just became useful for dumping waste into a dumpster
06:51 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: not MY grinder, I have pollishing wheels on it =)
06:51 PM veegee: Just attach a metal cage to the forks, load with construction waste, rotate head
06:52 PM XXCoder: oh hes finally back to his surface https://youtu.be/iqbifcNmUp8
07:17 PM XXCoder: finally see him do some lathe work. interesting.
07:36 PM XXCoder: guy at this old tony is super bored heh
07:49 PM XXCoder: fun video anyway https://youtu.be/3_wPH904a_8
07:50 PM veegee: Just got a 240 gallon air tank
07:50 PM veegee: Twice the volume of 120 but doesn't look that much bigger
07:51 PM SpeedEvil: cubert(3) can be misleading
07:51 PM veegee: Going to use it as a dry tank, placing it after the air dryer
07:51 PM veegee: Do I need a one way valve after the air dryer for any reason?
07:53 PM JavaBean: because you can't justify not getting one with a reason other than price?
08:14 PM gregcnc: super backer michael is legend https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1243275397/air-umbrella/comments
08:24 PM jymmmm: gregcnc: SMH, things that ppl will buy
08:24 PM JavaBean: don't forget, people go to stores and buy bottles of dihydrogen monoxide... and then drink them
08:55 PM perry_j1987: been watching horror videos of tormachs moving few thou pressing on the tables
08:59 PM JavaBean: dude, your trying to give everyone here nightmares
09:05 PM perry_j1987: lol
09:47 PM CaptHindsight: dihydrogen monoxide is all around me, I drink, swim, shower, urinate in, fire it at plants, and freeze it solid for fun and hijinks!
09:48 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Just add those polymer beads to get rid of it all once and for all
09:51 PM CaptHindsight: Ja Ja Ding Dong!!
09:53 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: on a buck converter, what happens when the source voltage is lower than the set output?
09:58 PM Tom_L: some will track the input voltage minus a small drop
09:59 PM CaptHindsight: it don't ah boost
10:00 PM skunkworks: wow - are we talking buck/boost transformers? So well rounded///
10:00 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, do you recall what jepler's iso pass was?
10:00 PM skunkworks: tux?
10:00 PM Tom_L: thanks
10:01 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: whattah yah may wants https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-ended_primary-inductor_converter
10:08 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I was jsut asking about buck converters
10:11 PM Tom_L: did raspberry pi move all their file locations?
10:11 PM Tom_L: unable to install anything
10:14 PM skunkworks: well - didn't they just change the name from raspian to something else?
10:15 PM Tom_L: yeah i heard something to that effect
10:15 PM Tom_L: i was just trying to apt install something and get errors now
10:16 PM Tom_L: and the lcnc version on it is 2.8 which i pulled my 2.7 files into and it didn't convert all the sections of the ini
10:17 PM Tom_L: it completely dumped some of them
10:17 PM Tom_L: i had it all working once and did some testing. now having problems getting anything working
10:18 PM Tom_L: guess i'll pick it up another day
10:24 PM Tom_L: i've got a [HOSTMOT2] section it completely removes
10:32 PM CaptHindsight: conspiracy to commit software
10:32 PM Tom_L: certainly unexpected
10:33 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: reminds me of that one I read that says that snow is full of chemicals so it doesnt melt properly. i guess they never heard of powder snow
10:33 PM Tom_L: didn't copy the [RS274NGC] section either
10:45 PM Tom_L: fortunately i think i made a backup
10:48 PM XXCoder: yay for backups
