01:36 AM Deejay: moin
02:05 AM Loetmichel: hrrrmph... nearly did a tesla autopilot this morning... damn the low hanging sun, nearly rear ended a semi with white box trailer. :-(
04:59 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:19 AM JT-Cave: went out to check for tobacco hornworms with the UV light and found a momma rabbit with 4 babies having breakfast in the middle of the driveway
06:46 AM unterhaus_: huh, the mailing list has picked up at least one more person that just whines about linuxcnc
06:54 AM Tom_itx: morning
07:01 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:06 AM Tom_itx: gonna have rabbit stew?
07:09 AM JT-Cave: don't really like rabbit
07:15 AM Tom_itx: me either, they used to get in my garden back when i had one
07:16 AM Tom_itx: 92F today
07:16 AM JT-Cave: 88°F here
07:36 AM SpeedEvil: https://i.imgur.com/ATf30C8.mp4
07:36 AM SpeedEvil: Multi-axis conveyor
07:39 AM JT-Cave: cool
07:41 AM beachbumpete1: That is pretty sweet
09:53 AM * Loetmichel must have blown a gasket somewhere... i am literally dripping onto the floor... MAAAN soldering all day and no A/C at work is a bad combination atm. :-(
10:03 AM SpeedEvil: https://web.archive.org/web/20160205044007/https://www.veskimo.com/
10:03 AM SpeedEvil: - cooler full of ice, pump, jacket with cooling tubes basically
10:04 AM SpeedEvil: $400 or so when they sold them
10:04 AM SpeedEvil: But readily DIYable
10:05 AM Loetmichel: SpeedEvil: been there done that for a SF-costume... but with a small glow engine converted to butane and a compressor cooler system :-)
10:05 AM SpeedEvil: neat
10:05 AM Loetmichel: cylon centurion... all 6mm glass fibre reinforced epoxy
10:06 AM Loetmichel: you could grill steaks inside that thing in the summer ;)
10:06 AM SpeedEvil: :)
10:06 AM Loetmichel: no choice but to cool the person inside
10:06 AM Loetmichel: or you would have a heat stroke in an hour
10:25 AM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
12:17 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
02:36 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: ping
03:34 PM unterhaus: Loetmichel is seeing the medic
03:41 PM CaptHindsight: maybe he should just wear a mummy suit
03:43 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: 22:33 in Deutschland
03:43 PM jymmmm: OH
03:43 PM jymmmm: ty
03:44 PM Deejay: gn8
03:56 PM tiwake: if I engrave overtop anodized surface, should I fill in the groove with some sort of clearcoat?
03:57 PM tiwake: or epoxy or something
03:57 PM tiwake: or just leave it
03:59 PM jdh: anodize it
04:02 PM tiwake: engrave then anodize?
04:02 PM tiwake: so, mask it off
04:03 PM tiwake: not sure how to do that
04:03 PM tiwake: without damaging the surface
04:07 PM Tom_L: clearcoat it
04:07 PM tiwake: is filling it in with epoxy a bad idea?
04:08 PM Tom_L: probably not, depends on the look you're going for
04:09 PM tiwake: hmm
04:09 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/pendant/pendant2.jpg
04:09 PM Tom_L: i just used black paint on those lettering
04:09 PM Tom_L: but it's not anodized either
04:10 PM Tom_L: quite common to fill engraving with some sort of goo
04:10 PM tiwake: alright
04:10 PM Tom_L: ^^ was just krylon
04:11 PM Tom_L: just make sure it's oil free when you apply
04:14 PM tiwake: sure
04:14 PM tiwake: I think a tiny ball endmill would look good
04:14 PM tiwake: like 1/16 or something
04:15 PM Tom_L: no, i'd get engraving bits
04:15 PM Tom_L: you can try it i suppose ymmv
04:15 PM tiwake: engraving tools leave a square bottom don't they?
04:15 PM Tom_L: no
04:15 PM Tom_L: mine are 60deg? points
04:16 PM tiwake: point, but the point is off center? so it leaves a square bottom
04:16 PM Tom_L: mine have something like a .001" flat maybe
04:16 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Engraving-3-175mm-Carbide-High-precision-Aluminum/dp/B00QNIXAOQ
04:16 PM tiwake: maybe not then
04:17 PM Tom_L: those are slightly different than mine. mine are half round
04:17 PM tiwake: 0.004" bottom then
04:17 PM tiwake: (for those)
04:17 PM Tom_L: i didn't check but likely so
04:18 PM tiwake: says 0.1mm tip
04:18 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/5x-High-Quality-Sharp-Carbide-PCB-Engraving-CNC-Bit-Router-60-Deg-0-1mm/140790334068?hash=item20c7c20274:g:MWwAAOSw8lpZLhqJ
04:20 PM Tom_L: just get the feeds etc right or you'll chip the end off
04:22 PM Tom_L: you can get them with wider points if you want
04:23 PM Tom_L: or wider angle
05:01 PM transhumanist: anyone know where I can get a good CNC gantry CNC mill frame including a real nice ball screw and good accuracy. I wanted to hand pick and choose parts for one ... something like this only one that takes a real nice accurate and big ball screw and is finely machined: https://www.ebay.com/itm/DIY-Gantry-Style-CNC-Milling-Machine-Cast-Iron-Frame-for-metal/193304082197?hash=item2d01d23715:g:e3wAAOSwsmdeISl4
05:02 PM transhumanist: only other complaint I have about this one besides worries for accurate machined parts is that the verticle hight isnt as high as I would hope
05:10 PM pink_vampire: hi
05:16 PM pink_vampire: XXCoder: ?
05:21 PM andypugh: SpeedEvil: I have seen omniwheel versions of that loading cargo into a plane. (I was looking out the plane window)
05:22 PM andypugh: transhumanist: Which country are you in and how much money are you prepared to trade for your time>
05:22 PM andypugh: ?
05:23 PM andypugh: I gues that most of us here would either build from scratch or buy the cheapest possible thing from China to be viewed as a kit of parts.
05:23 PM pink_vampire: https://imgur.com/gallery/NpAFpQc
05:24 PM Tom_L: pink, your invention or you found it that way?
05:24 PM andypugh: (Though I bought a kit-of-parts 3D printer from China and I am still running it unmodified 4 years later)
05:24 PM pink_vampire: I did it
05:25 PM andypugh: pink_vampire: Needs an actual 7 pink jewels in the face :-)
05:26 PM pink_vampire: I think it's the 5th time that I took it a part, apparently gravity work.
05:27 PM andypugh: Or maybe (7 + 4) Jewels as tha text and shiny things at the cardinal points.
05:27 PM transhumanist: sorry was pulled away
05:28 PM transhumanist: not sure what yoiu mean andypugh
05:28 PM pink_vampire: it took me about 5 minutes to paint it pink with the airbrush and half a drop of pink acrylic paint.
05:28 PM transhumanist: I live in the usa
05:28 PM Tom_L: transhumanist, can't find any used iron to convert?
05:29 PM pink_vampire: Now I just need a pink caliper and pink micrometer
05:29 PM Tom_L: my calipers are blue
05:29 PM transhumanist: I guess i i will go for a fully assmebled version of the one I just posted to start with I just worry about lack of accuracy
05:31 PM transhumanist: I would like to find something very similar with a bigger bed and more verticle clearance, few fit in this category
05:31 PM andypugh: transhumanist: That cast iron frame does look like a decent starting point. You have notied (I think) that it needs slides, balsscrews etc.
05:32 PM andypugh: Are you particulary constrined by space?
05:32 PM transhumanist: yes and from what i understand picking out the ball screw might be the biggest critical piece besides the wattage of the miller
05:32 PM transhumanist: wood and soft metal machining
05:33 PM andypugh: Is there no way that you can find a home for an actual milling machine? That money will buy you an already working machine
05:33 PM transhumanist: but if its got a lot of variability on the quality of the machined parts. its not much good
05:34 PM transhumanist: yes space is an issue
05:35 PM transhumanist: I would like to machine within a thousandth of an inch if possible
05:36 PM transhumanist: andypugh I hope your around later, I will come back to talk but cant talk much longer
05:36 PM transhumanist: are you around a lot?
05:36 PM XXCoder: hey pink_vampire
05:37 PM XXCoder: lol nice
05:37 PM andypugh: transhumanist: I am on fairly often, but not as much as I used to. And like on insomniac GMT + )
05:38 PM andypugh: (live on insomniav GMT + 0) I meant to say
05:38 PM transhumanist: ok andypugh thanks, if you across one that you think might fit the bill, can you message me?
05:38 PM andypugh: transhumanist: https://www.ebay.com/itm/KBC-Model-TUM-1VS-Vertical-mill-parts-machine/143310835217?hash=item215dfdce11%3Ag%3AvLUAAOSwyvldFQUs&LH_ItemCondition=4]
05:39 PM transhumanist: wow that is way to big almost as big as my dads bridgeport
05:39 PM andypugh: Yes,
05:40 PM andypugh: You seem to be shopping for your first CNC machine,
05:40 PM transhumanist: yes
05:40 PM andypugh: Buy something really cheap, and possibly nasty, and learn from that what you really need.
05:40 PM transhumanist: ok thanks andypugh
05:42 PM andypugh: Something like the 6040 machines.
05:42 PM pink_vampire: XXCoder: thanks!!
05:42 PM XXCoder: but not too far down, yeah 6040 is pretty good
05:42 PM andypugh: which at least work out of the box
05:42 PM XXCoder: i prefer more black dial and white arm but price tend to jump up on those lol
05:43 PM pink_vampire: I can make you any color you want.
05:44 PM XXCoder: its fine i have long since used to stock colors
05:44 PM andypugh: To put this in perspective, my first machine I bought for conversion was a £700 mill / lathe combo which turned out to be a terrible mill, a decent lathe and an ecellent learning experience,
05:44 PM pink_vampire: just pop the glass, remove the arm, pssss psss with acrylic airbrush and you have it
05:44 PM andypugh: My most recent conversion cost me more than that just for the custom castings I had cast :-)
05:45 PM transhumanist: I see
05:45 PM transhumanist: well I kinda have an idea from college work what I am looking for, whats in that image I posted except for verticle clearance and accuracy it fits the bill
05:45 PM andypugh: You might find that a 6040 (with the stock software even) will do all you need.
05:46 PM andypugh: or you might find that you need far more, and eve LinuxCNC isn’t good eniugh for you.
05:46 PM Tom_L: why a gantry design?
05:46 PM transhumanist: well I was looking at verticle mills
05:46 PM andypugh: Yesm good question
05:47 PM Tom_L: i built a vertical
05:47 PM transhumanist: that one seemed to have the most mass of any of the cheap cnc's
05:48 PM andypugh: That little gantry does have a jig-mill look. WIth half-decent ballscrews, _very_ good linear encoders and LinuxCNC you could make that into a super-precision small mill,
05:48 PM andypugh: But he said he wanted 1 thou, not sub-tenth
05:49 PM andypugh: If I wanted to machine watch plates then that frame (with work, like hand-scraping the ball-slide seats) might be a good starting point.
05:50 PM transhumanist: ok andypugh good enough I guess I will go with it then
05:51 PM andypugh: Don’t get me wrong, I already admitted to spending about that much for new iron castings for a machine that already existed,
05:51 PM transhumanist: I will see if I can get one that is fully assembled with good parts to start with. I would like to use it as a stepping stone to building larger more prcecise equipment
05:52 PM transhumanist: I can use electropolishing if I have to
05:52 PM Tom_L: just depends where you're willing to give and take. precision, size etc
05:52 PM transhumanist: ya I know
05:52 PM Tom_L: good rails and screws will cost more than that frame
05:52 PM Tom_L: i settled for china grown ones
05:53 PM Tom_L: works fine for me
05:53 PM andypugh: If you think that electropolishing and hand scraping achieve the same ends, then you have a lot to learn, young padawan. (And a fun journey ahead of you)
05:53 PM Tom_L: heh
05:53 PM transhumanist: I see
05:54 PM andypugh: Niow who was it I watched on Yotube scraping in a mill? He went really deeply into what he was referencing to what.
05:55 PM transhumanist: this one seems interesting , any thoughts? https://www.ebay.com/i/282072341394?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=282072341394&targetid=884116179079&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9002142&poi=&campaignid=9338046710&mkgroupid=92724259577&rlsatarget=aud-762207186714:pla-884116179079&abcId=1139336&merchantid=6296724&gclid=Cj0KCQjwz4z3BRCgARIsAES_OVfOgxM7xlrM4zy3_ms8PfhVH3ihATVipM-8W_TtddtU17hii4hx5eUaA
05:55 PM transhumanist: wcB
05:55 PM Tom_L: i knew a russian chap in another channel that was building a lathe. last i heard from him he was still scraping the surfaces
05:55 PM transhumanist: lol ok got it
05:56 PM Tom_L: i built my whole mill and afik he's still scraping :)
05:56 PM Tom_L: i had a budget
05:57 PM Tom_L: and used what i had available locally except screws, steppers etc
05:57 PM andypugh: transhumanist: That ebay design is terrible, but you couldn’t buy the parts for that price.
05:57 PM transhumanist: thats a real interesting one, problem is I dont know what model it is, nothing comes up for the actual model thats fully together
05:58 PM Tom_L: now if i were andy, i'd have cast the frame and had it ground :)
05:58 PM Tom_L: then scraped it
05:58 PM andypugh: Ah! The auction is _only_ for the extended Z axis
05:58 PM transhumanist: Yes I know
05:58 PM transhumanist: cant find the actual cnc itself
05:59 PM andypugh: As I said, that actual CNC is a rather bad design,
05:59 PM transhumanist: ah ok
05:59 PM Tom_L: i haven't seen any of those aluminum box mills but i can't imagine them being that rigid
06:00 PM transhumanist: I see
06:01 PM Tom_L: what do you plan to cut with it?
06:01 PM andypugh: Why are the ballscews up so high (arguably they are near the cutting force, so that’t one argument, to reduce moment loads (torques) but they are in the way of all the dust. And the gantry is thin at the bottom where all the loads are
06:01 PM XXCoder: it reallys falls under what usercase is. what are you milling
06:02 PM transhumanist: want to machine wood plastic and aluminum
06:02 PM transhumanist: what do you think of this one? https://www.google.com/search?q=DIY+6040+cnc+milling+machine+cast+iron&safe=active&tbs=vw:l,ss:44&tbm=shop&sxsrf=ALeKk00W7Nogp94C4I3JuOB_Fd_G6eV5tA:1592002282144&ei=6gbkXvC-CLiZwbkP4vyogA4&start=60&sa=N&ved=0ahUKEwjw24jUrv3pAhW4TDABHWI-CuA4KBDy0wMIugQ&biw=1249&bih=644#spd=3939402478237323657
06:03 PM Tom_L: little z travel
06:03 PM Tom_L: if you put a vise on it you won't have room for much else
06:03 PM andypugh: I think I could make that cast iron frame into a lovely little machine. But I could also make my own patterns and have them cast by a foundry for half the price. But that’s fair, you are pauing for theor design, machining and the paint.
06:03 PM transhumanist: ya I was thinking may be the same thing
06:03 PM XXCoder: yeah can use drill vise but yeah qyite tight
06:04 PM XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/i/162608841465?chn=ps interesting
06:04 PM Tom_L: i ended up raising mine up another 2" once i realized the same
06:04 PM transhumanist: ya I was looking at that one, just didnt seem to be all that "stiff"
06:05 PM transhumanist: interesting the motor is offset to side
06:05 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Column_Mill_VMC.jpg
06:05 PM Tom_L: that's what i came up with and built
06:05 PM Tom_L: suits my needs and made from material i could find here
06:05 PM andypugh: The little gantry originally suggested is east to jack up for more Z height
06:05 PM transhumanist: wow thats nice, feel like sharing the plans?
06:06 PM Tom_L: it's all catia
06:06 PM transhumanist: andypugh: how would I do that ?
06:06 PM andypugh: It just needs some blocks under the gantry legs,
06:07 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/spindle_cooler/Mill3.jpg
06:07 PM transhumanist: ah you think that can be raised up then, intersting
06:07 PM Tom_L: not pretty but it works well
06:08 PM transhumanist: so you think the vertcile two pillers come unattached>?
06:09 PM Tom_L: one way or another :)
06:09 PM andypugh: I like the cast iron frame, but it isn’t a working machine. But it has the potential to be superb. But you would need another machine to make the parts. How about buying a _lathe_ with a milling slide. Or do you have a lathe>
06:09 PM transhumanist: lol cut the damn things, I didnt realize that was affective with cast iron to be honest
06:09 PM transhumanist: yes i have access to a lathe
06:10 PM transhumanist: and a big bridgeport and some cutting tools but only for a day or two a week before I start bugging the hell out of my dad
06:10 PM andypugh: You can see the join where the legs meet the base
06:10 PM XXCoder: interesting spindle cooling solution
06:11 PM transhumanist: ah right
06:11 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, it's the stock sherline spindle
06:11 PM XXCoder: you probably can use car radator for cooling fluid
06:11 PM Tom_L: and i tend to push it
06:11 PM transhumanist: ok then I like yor input , glad I came and risked looking like a fool to ask!
06:12 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, if i'm machining something that needs alot of material removal i'll add ice to the bucket
06:12 PM Tom_L: quite effective
06:12 PM XXCoder: yeah. though if you use car radator setup you could just use car fan and such
06:12 PM XXCoder: using some 12v input
06:13 PM Tom_L: do you honestly see room for a car radiator there?
06:13 PM Tom_L: :)
06:13 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:13 PM transhumanist: I know someone who lives very close to where they are selling that for 1000 bucks only an hour a way. I can ask them to pick it up , they are going to be driving up north in a few weeks anyway
06:13 PM XXCoder: on wall :) where hose crosses
06:13 PM Tom_L: not as much room there as you think
06:13 PM XXCoder: or maybe heater core
06:13 PM transhumanist: not bad for $1000 I guess
06:13 PM Tom_L: that might be more like it
06:14 PM andypugh: transhumanist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjjdgp7yMUA&feature=youtu.be
06:15 PM andypugh: It’s just photos and commentary, but very good at explaining what is referenced to what and why
06:16 PM andypugh: And would be a good starting point for checking that little cast iron machine if you did buy it
06:17 PM andypugh: You could just buy it, bolt in the cheapest parts that you can find and _then_ inspect and updrade,
06:18 PM transhumanist: oh thanks andypugh, I did not bother to look at the base of the mill I was looking at the top and it didnt seem like it would separate easy, but looking at the bottom I see you are right
06:19 PM transhumanist: I have to run now. I think the hard part will be finding a good ball screw for it. Not sure really what to look for but I guess i will learn
06:19 PM andypugh: I do think that it could make a lovely little machine.
06:19 PM transhumanist: wish I knew what the model is of the gantry, I dont see but a couple of them
06:20 PM andypugh: Buy the cheapest _preloaded_ ballscrew you can find, You can sort out the accuracy in software
06:20 PM transhumanist: ok
06:20 PM transhumanist: thanks for the advice
06:21 PM transhumanist: I will catch up with you later
06:22 PM andypugh: One other video, this is a machine using worn leadscews that are laser mapped then compensated in LinuxCNC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn1bJ3YAQdI
06:23 PM transhumanist: interesting , thanks
06:23 PM andypugh: After 3 mins you see what an utter monster it is, ]
06:24 PM transhumanist: thanks!
06:26 PM andypugh: `That’s holding 1 thou while doing 5 axis moves with leadscews,
06:26 PM SpeedEvil: andypugh: neat
06:26 PM tiwake: why not just replace the ballscrews if they are worn?
06:27 PM andypugh: They are about 30’ long and 5” diameter?
06:27 PM tiwake: sure
06:27 PM tiwake: just do it
06:28 PM tiwake: thats cool though... linuxCNC can correct such things?
06:28 PM andypugh: Yes
06:30 PM andypugh: And that machine is possibly a rare case where backlash comp probbaly does work, the bed is so heavy that cutting forces don’t move it around the backlash.
06:31 PM Loetmichel: jymmmm: pong
06:42 PM JavaBean: yet another good and valid reason to not use any of their "services" https://twitter.com/evansiegfried/status/1271211451399757825
06:42 PM JavaBean: and this is the wrong window, oops
06:43 PM XXCoder: wtf
06:44 PM JavaBean: heh, i forgot you were in here. you are the perfect person to start spamming various things too
06:44 PM XXCoder: not in this channel
06:46 PM JavaBean: correct, hence the "oops wrong window" comment
06:52 PM XXCoder: lol
06:54 PM andypugh: JavaBean: Well, the good news is that Instagram AI pornbots now recognise all possible skin tones and levels of hirsuitmess.
08:14 PM CaptHindsight: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man9/pwmgen.9.html
08:14 PM CaptHindsight: type 2: up/down
08:14 PM CaptHindsight: Two output pins, up and down. For positive inputs, the PWM/PDM waveform appears on up, while down is low. For negative inputs, the waveform appears on down, while up is low. Suitable for driving the two sides of an H-bridge to generate a bipolar output.
08:16 PM CaptHindsight: this is for software PDM
08:17 PM CaptHindsight: ah found the hardware version http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/drivers/hostmot2.html#_pwmgen
09:00 PM unterhaus: dang, there is a twitter app installed on my win10 computer for some reason
09:01 PM roycroft: is it auto-subcribed to @realpotus?
09:01 PM roycroft: or whatever his handle is and however the twitter handle things work
09:49 PM skunkworks: CaptHindsight: I used that for my homemade amps...
09:49 PM skunkworks: up/down pwm.
09:49 PM skunkworks: Then I found some cheap AMC drives on ebay and didn't look back.
09:50 PM skunkworks: The little emco lathe is running amc servo amps that take pwm+dir
09:57 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks: I'm driving linear voice coil motors
09:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFMQwspj_6Y similar
10:36 PM veegee: I bought the Acer 1440V and unloaded into my workshop. Going to wire it up tonight
10:37 PM veegee: I have chucks and stuff but no cutters yet.
10:37 PM veegee: Can't wait to try it. I have some HSS blanks so I can grind my own tools, but I'd rather start with something standard. Any recommendation for a first cutter?
10:38 PM Tom_L: lathe?
10:38 PM veegee: yes
10:38 PM Tom_L: get some insert holders
10:38 PM veegee: I know almost nothing about using a lathe
10:39 PM roycroft: when i took machining classes we spent two sessions learning how to grind drills and lathe cutters before we were ever allowed to touch a machine
10:39 PM XXCoder: of course you must use lathe rook https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhddabypmrA geg
