01:22 AM sensille: how important is it to have a large spindle bore in a smallish lathe?
01:27 AM sensille: i know, stupid question :)
01:27 AM sensille: is 22mm a real limitation on a mini lathe?
01:41 AM veegee: You guys were right, the loading dock is sand-filled
01:42 AM veegee: concrete slab on top, single row of cinder blocks on the outside, sand on the inside
01:42 AM Loetmichel: sensille: my micro lathe has a 10mm bore... bigger is always better but you CAN make most things work
01:42 AM veegee: The Allis-Chalmers forklift should be able to comfortably lift it off. It's rated for at least 7,000 l bs
01:43 AM Loetmichel: veegee: and whats the thickness of the slab?
01:43 AM sensille: Loetmichel: 10mm ... so 22mm is probably fine and i don't need to go for 38mm
01:43 AM Loetmichel: knowing americans i would wager its less than 2" and no iron in it ;)
01:43 AM veegee: I'd say about 10cm
01:44 AM Loetmichel: sensille: usually the spindle bores are similar sized for different similar sized lathes
01:44 AM veegee: I had some fun drilling holes into the cinder blocks with a big rotary hammer
01:44 AM veegee: good times
01:44 AM veegee: Drilled more than I needed to
01:44 AM Loetmichel: if it has a certain size chuck more spindle bore isnt useful, once the chuck becomes the limitation
01:45 AM veegee: Then I put it into hammer only mode and started hammering the ground, pretending it to be a jackhammer
01:45 AM veegee: for no reason other than it's fun
01:46 AM Loetmichel: veegee: back in my sparky days i used to drill 28mm holes into 2 foot concrete walls. with a 3 foot 1/14" drill and an AEG (pneumatic) hammer drill
01:46 AM veegee: It's one of these https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00HUCUJG6 Bosch RH540M, nicely built tool'
01:46 AM Loetmichel: fun times
01:47 AM Loetmichel: it was a bit like joisting in slow motion ;)
01:47 AM Loetmichel: yeah, mine is one size smaller, but same SDS max chuck
01:49 AM veegee: I should get some air tools, now that I finally have my 11kW air compressor hooked up to the 600V 3 phase power supply
01:49 AM Loetmichel: pneumatic i meant the hammering. not the drive
01:49 AM veegee: it compresses air faster than I can use it with a high flow blow gun
01:49 AM veegee: aren't all the rotary hammers pneumatic in that way?
01:49 AM Loetmichel: yes
01:50 AM Loetmichel: i wanted to distinguish from those "schlagbohrmaschinen" that use two axial "gears" to make it hammer
01:50 AM veegee: Those are "hammer drills"
01:50 AM veegee: as opposed to "rotary hammer"
01:50 AM Loetmichel: the ones that scream like a banshee when drilling in concrete
01:50 AM veegee: yeah those are called hammer drills
01:51 AM veegee: They're next to useless
01:51 AM veegee: In softer material, they're ok, but on anything hard, it takes forever
01:52 AM veegee: also if you get a battery powered drill, go for the non hammer drill version because the hammer mechanism adds a lot of axial play
01:52 AM veegee: it's really annoying
01:52 AM Loetmichel: indeed
01:53 AM Loetmichel: my rotary hammer is now close to 30 years old, back when AEG still was a german company and not a chinse envelope
01:53 AM Loetmichel: :-)
01:54 AM Loetmichel: cant find any picture of it but it looks like an upscaled hammer drill, not like the usual rotary hammmers
01:55 AM veegee: ah da engrish no so gud wun nao?
01:55 AM Loetmichel: i.e: motor axially mounted instead of like a magazine on an SMG
01:55 AM Loetmichel: not good at all ;)
01:57 AM Loetmichel: fun fact: a 28mm by 1000mm hammer drill bit with SDSmax is rigid enough to spin you round the machine if you are hitting a rebar in the wall ;)
01:57 AM Loetmichel: been there done that a few times.
01:57 AM Loetmichel: must have looked funny ;)
01:58 AM Loetmichel: like in the old dewalt ad
01:59 AM Loetmichel: just the other side ;)
02:00 AM veegee: My rotary hammer has a speed control
02:00 AM veegee: And hammer only mode
02:00 AM veegee: Oh it also has a safety clutch
02:01 AM veegee: so I don't think I have to worry about that
02:08 AM Deejay: moin
02:11 AM veegee: CaptHindsight my comfort is actually primarily influenced by humidity
02:11 AM veegee: I sweat a lot, need that to evaporate
02:11 AM veegee: hot and dry is unpleasant, but hot and humid is miserable
02:11 AM veegee: I'll still get a bunch of small ACs like the one you linked at a much lower price and hook them up in parallel
02:21 AM CaptHindsight: veegee: what is the cost per sq ft or m there for industrial space?
02:21 AM veegee: $8/sqft/year
02:22 AM Loetmichel: veegee: indeed, i did a few vacations in marc/libya and the likes... 45°C is no problem if its dry as fu**.
02:22 AM CaptHindsight: around her it's $8-13 USD
02:22 AM CaptHindsight: $8 CAN?
02:22 AM veegee: Yes
02:22 AM Loetmichel: 30°C and 80%Rh is a lot worse
02:22 AM veegee: But I looked for 6 months for this deal
02:22 AM Loetmichel: maroc
02:22 AM veegee: takes a while to find it at that price
02:22 AM veegee: because it's near Toronto
02:23 AM veegee: if you go away from the city, then it's much cheaper
02:23 AM CaptHindsight: the closer to civilization the higher the rate
02:23 AM veegee: hell you can get 8 acres of land for $150k
02:23 AM veegee: yeah and I don't really like cities
02:37 AM CaptHindsight: Cocktails can now be sold for takeout and delivery in Illinois as bars
02:38 AM Loetmichel: hmmm. $me just cleaned off some PCBs with acetone. Am i weird to actually like the smell of acetone? smells fruity to me?!?
02:38 AM CaptHindsight: yes
02:39 AM CaptHindsight: ester like odors can be fruity
02:39 AM CaptHindsight: since their odors are esters
02:42 AM Loetmichel: note to self: dry hands before smoking after using acetone... "burning" hands look funny and actually are not hot at all but scares the coworkers ;)
04:46 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:46 AM XXCoder: yo
05:04 AM JT-Cave: Spot lighting in the tomato plants this morning I picked 3 tomatoes and 2 tobacco hornworms... they seem to be a bit easier to spot at 4:30 AM in the dark with a strong flash light.
05:06 AM XXCoder: some bugs really glow under uv light
05:06 AM XXCoder: might want to get one if some of em likes to eat your plants
05:09 AM JT-Cave: hmm that's a good idea to try... do you mean like a black light?
05:09 AM XXCoder: yeah. though there is handy led flashlights now!
05:10 AM XXCoder: i got mine years ago to charge glow in dark stuff
05:12 AM JT-Cave: I'll look at Manerds today
05:12 AM XXCoder: i dont think i ever saw such in stores. lightbulb sure but not flashlight
05:13 AM JT-Cave: https://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-Blacklight-Flashlights-Detector-Batteries/dp/B00RV8PREI
05:13 AM XXCoder: probably can rip led lightbulb apart and make your own flashlight wirth mill and 3d printer heh
05:13 AM JT-Cave: you mean like this
05:13 AM JT-Cave: no spare time to play
05:13 AM XXCoder: thats cheap crud but basically
05:14 AM JT-Cave: https://www.menards.com/main/lighting-ceiling-fans/flashlights-accessories/police-security-reg-uv-inspection-pen-light/98343/p-1555914861304-c-6314.htm
05:15 AM JT-Cave: what's a good one?
05:15 AM XXCoder: probably better quality than amazon one
05:15 AM XXCoder: dunno my info is very out of date
05:20 AM XXCoder: lots good options in ebay
05:22 AM XXCoder: this one seems good but has one picture of shiny splatters boots. ummmm https://www.ebay.com/itm/395-nm-LED-UV-Light-Blacklight-USB-Rechargeable-Tactical-Flashlight-18650-Torch/362727021004
05:22 AM JT-Cave: https://www.waveformlighting.com/tech/everything-you-need-to-know-about-uv-flashlights
05:22 AM XXCoder: usercase 4 nice
05:23 AM XXCoder: my led link is 395 nm bit high
05:24 AM XXCoder: that is excellent info!
05:24 AM JT-Cave: thanks
05:25 AM JT-Cave: https://www.amazon.com/U3S-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Blacklight-Ultraviolet/dp/B07KT75XY3
05:25 AM XXCoder: searching for 365 nm have different results
05:25 AM JT-Cave: Tattu makes good batteries
05:26 AM XXCoder: nice. wow bit high price
05:26 AM XXCoder: theres some combo regular/uv ones
05:26 AM JT-Cave: sometimes you have to pay to get good quality
05:27 AM XXCoder: nice for walking to plants then switch
05:27 AM XXCoder: it does depend on factors. i wouldnt buy 60 usd one just for checking my garden but for larger application of it sure
05:28 AM XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rechargeable-LED-Searchlight-Handheld-Portable-Spotlight-UV-Flashlight-Aluminum/202725375368
05:28 AM XXCoder: big one
05:29 AM XXCoder: doent specify nm though
05:29 AM JT-Cave: I would spend $60 after working all winter to care for the tomatoes to keep them bug free
05:29 AM XXCoder: true
05:30 AM JT-Cave: yea no nm
05:39 AM JT-Cave: the mail man is not going to like me, I have a 60 pound package coming
05:39 AM XXCoder: my postal person hate me
05:39 AM XXCoder: i have 2 boxes of soylent a month
05:43 AM JT-Cave: soylent green?
05:44 AM XXCoder: nah, brown, red and blue
05:44 AM XXCoder: no pople involved
05:44 AM JT-Cave: lol
05:44 AM XXCoder: in book it wasnt people
06:36 AM JT-Cave: must have started to rain, internet is flaking out
06:37 AM XXCoder: fun
07:01 AM Tom_L: morning
07:04 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:04 AM JT-Cave: rain here today
07:10 AM Tom_L: looks like another hot sunny one here
07:20 AM JT-Cave: we get the heat tomorrow
07:22 AM Tom_L: we never got rid of it :)
07:25 AM Tom_L: 96 by 4pm
07:45 AM X704 is now known as tiwake
08:53 AM dirty_d: finally https://github.com/caseykneale/VIMKiller
09:31 AM skunkwor1s is now known as skunkworks
09:35 AM skunkworks: wow - I just went through irc hell
09:35 AM skunkworks: I guess I don't use identify enough
09:35 AM skunkworks: dirty_d: not what I was expecting. Well played :)
09:35 AM methods_: damn i always knew there was some way to close vi
09:35 AM methods_: i just never had the button
09:49 AM dirty_d: lol
09:55 AM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
11:51 AM sensille: XXCoder: wandering inn (1) was nice and entertaining. spellmonger is not that well-paced :)
01:22 PM * Loetmichel just pledged 330 Eur on kickstarter for a creality CR6... lets see if its as good as the Ender3... dont know why i just ordered ANOTHER 3dprinter but ok. :-)
02:01 PM dirty_d: hmm, neat
02:03 PM dirty_d: still uses a bowden tube though?
02:04 PM dirty_d: thats my biggest dislike of my ender 3
02:05 PM dirty_d: I kinda want one of these https://www.matterhackers.com/articles/tech-breakdown-mosquito-hotend?rcode=PPCADS&gclid=CjwKCAjwt-L2BRA_EiwAacX32fXaC4I_p_Q9oDz92u9ZR5U905hJw9bbDc9PAV0j7LI6CvWRQZFEsxoCq1cQAvD_BwE
02:05 PM dirty_d: I hate how fragile most hot ends are
02:49 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: lol maybe you want results every five minutes
02:55 PM XXCoder: sensille: nice. glad you enjoyed it
02:56 PM jymmmm: Ummm ---> Cable type: # 14 AWG silicone cable, 680 cores, maximum current 88A

05:08 PM jymmmm: https://www.futurity.org/shadow-effect-energy-generator-electricity-2379052/
05:08 PM jymmmm: I"m kinda calling bs on that
05:10 PM Tom_L: just kinda?
05:11 PM jymmmm: yeah
05:11 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, take it in a dark alley in LA and test it tonight mkay?
05:35 PM andypugh: It works on contrast rather than dark, though.
05:35 PM andypugh: But I am not sure Iunderstand the point.
05:51 PM Tom_L: 96F out currently
05:56 PM jymmmm: boo
06:04 PM veegee: I just found this video of Richard Stallman eating something from his foot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I25UeVXrEHQ&has_verified=1
06:04 PM veegee: What's all this about?
06:04 PM veegee: I mean I love the guy for his principles
06:05 PM veegee: Is this just one of those weird things some people do? I don't really get it
06:06 PM veegee: People who have lost the ability to use their arms/hands do everything with their feet, so that makes sense. But I don't think this is that
06:19 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.20.106625v1
06:27 PM Tom_L: what would typically cause a joint 0 following error? i've never gotten any before
06:30 PM Tom_L: it is pretty warm in the shop
09:09 PM veegee: Oh man these dehumidifiers are damn fine machines
09:09 PM veegee: It's SOOO much more comfortable
09:10 PM veegee: 6 are doing the job. Takes a while to drop it down to 45% RH, but that's amazing considering it's 70% RH to begin with in a huge space like mine
09:10 PM veegee: I bought them for $140 CAD each, no tax
09:10 PM veegee: I'll probably add a few more just so I can get the on demand climate control I need and reduce their power consumption when I'm not there.
09:11 PM veegee: Highly effective investment. Sweat evaporates much quicker, especially with a small fan pointed towards me. Before, it would just soak my clothes. I might not even need an AC unit
09:12 PM veegee: Power consumption when all compressors are on is about 3.6kW which is nothing
09:14 PM veegee: I can get away with blowing compressed air under my shirt to cool me down if needed
09:22 PM jymmmm: 6?! would hate to see your power bill
09:32 PM * Tom_L imagines a row of hampsters on treadmills beside each dehumidifier
09:33 PM Tom_L: adjusted the following ferror in the ini and it helped but still get following errors once in a great while
09:34 PM Tom_L: i'll add some more tomorrow
09:35 PM Tom_L: i think it was just too hot out there
09:36 PM Tom_L: gonna hit 100 here tomorrow
09:36 PM Tom_L: yay!
09:37 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200604_145152.jpg
09:37 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: pi4?
09:37 PM Tom_L: no, my old D525
09:37 PM skunkworks: oh
09:37 PM Tom_L: it's been rock solid
09:37 PM skunkworks: what hardware?
09:38 PM Tom_L: 7i90 7i47s
09:38 PM Tom_L: i got no air in the shop and it was 95+ today
09:40 PM Tom_L: FERROR = 0.050
09:40 PM Tom_L: MIN_FERROR = 0.005
09:40 PM Tom_L: on all axis
09:40 PM Tom_L: i changed it to FERROR .10 and MIN_FERROR .025
09:40 PM skunkworks: english?
09:41 PM Tom_L: inch units yes
09:41 PM skunkworks: wow
09:41 PM Tom_L: wow what?
09:41 PM skunkworks: something is wrong? (did I miss a conversation?)
09:42 PM Tom_L: i don't think i've adjusted those since the control was on the sherline
09:42 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, i was getting joint following errors tonight
09:42 PM skunkworks: sure - but this is a pid stepper machine?
09:42 PM skunkworks: no realtime errors?
09:42 PM Tom_L: just step / direction
09:42 PM Tom_L: no
09:42 PM Tom_L: no pid i'm aware of
09:43 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/configs/NEW_MILL_SHOP_2.7/new_mill.ini
09:43 PM skunkworks: just sending postion to the stepgen?
09:43 PM Tom_L: there's the ini
09:43 PM Tom_L: yes
09:43 PM Tom_L: i haven't had any problems since i built it but i think it could be the heat
09:43 PM skunkworks: and using rt_preemt?
09:43 PM Tom_L: no
09:43 PM Tom_L: rtai on wheezy
09:44 PM Tom_L: it didn't crash, just stopped
09:45 PM Tom_L: are those numbers reasonable for a stepper setup?
09:45 PM skunkworks: seem ok - but if your latency swings quite a bit - you may get following errors as the stepgen in postion mode doesn't handle that very well
09:46 PM skunkworks: that is why pid/velocity mode stepgen..
09:46 PM Tom_L: i should have waited until it cools down but i kinda wanted to get this part done
09:47 PM Tom_L: i dunno how to set that up for a stepper system
09:47 PM Tom_L: you need feedback for that right?
09:47 PM skunkworks: yes - but the feedback is just from the stepgen...
09:48 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200604_213040.jpg
09:49 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: at his rate ~36 Canadian cents per hour
09:49 PM Tom_L: hah
09:49 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, for the lathe spindle?
09:49 PM skunkworks: I think I usually just start with a kinda close mesa config. I think the wizard creates a pid stepper setup in mesa
09:49 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: yes
09:50 PM skunkworks: overkill but - you know
09:50 PM Tom_L: i've never used the wizzards
09:50 PM Tom_L: started from scratch with a borrowed ini
09:50 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: neither have I.. I usually just grab a config that is close to what I want.
09:50 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:51 PM Tom_L: i haven't had any problems with it up until now and it was rather warm out there tonight
09:53 PM skunkworks: the timing pully's hole isn't perpidicular to the pully.. They had one job...
09:53 PM skunkworks: but it will probably be good enough..
09:53 PM Tom_L: heh
10:05 PM Tom_L: i wish i had a few radius endmills
10:05 PM Tom_L: not bull nose
10:12 PM Rab: Tom_L, corner rounding end mills? I've been seeing several on eBay, name brand used in good condition, starting around $10.
10:13 PM Tom_L: new they're not that cheap
10:13 PM Tom_L: i doubt i'd use it enough to warrant buying one really
10:14 PM Rab: I bought one of these a little over a week ago, in fact: https://www.ebay.com/itm/143193140126
10:14 PM Tom_L: lakeshore isn't too bad for the smaller ones
10:14 PM Rab: The bigger the radius, the higher the price, of course.
10:14 PM Tom_L: yup
10:15 PM Rab: Same seller has another 3/32" for $1 cheaper, but I went for M42.
10:16 PM Tom_L: https://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/332radcornerrounder-1.aspx
10:16 PM Tom_L: that would be preferred for tighter inside corners
10:19 PM Tom_L: i didn't see any at onlinecarbide dot com
10:19 PM Tom_L: i got my threadmills from them and like them
