12:07 AM veegee: Everytime I see an unattended forklift in a parking lot, like at the grocery store, the first thing that comes to mind is "hmm, that's an awfully unsecured propane tank. Maybe I can steal it"
12:21 AM veegee: Just a thought - since I'll be using the forklift indoors primarily, can I somehow easily vent the exhaust throw an air hose?
12:22 AM veegee: Like route the exhaust gas first through a radiator to cool it as much as possible, and then to something like a 1" air hose to blow the exhaust gasses outside
12:23 AM veegee: Would add a bit of backpressure, but not that much and shouldn't be a big deal. But would avoid polluting the inside of the unit with exhaust gasses and particulates
12:24 AM CaptHindsight: you'd need the hose to be on a ceiling boom to follow you around https://s25180.pcdn.co/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/RedVFormationII_crop.jpg
12:29 AM jymmmm: veegee: A 20" whole house fan sounds better, and cheaper
12:29 AM jymmmm: and easier
12:29 AM veegee: I have these: https://www.amazon.ca/XPOWER-X-830-Speed-Professional-8-5-Amp/dp/B007O6ZNWI/
12:30 AM veegee: that should do the trick
12:30 AM veegee: Just need to mount them properly at the exhaust port
12:30 AM CaptHindsight: capture exhaust fumes in a weather balloon
12:30 AM jymmmm: or use them to bring in fresh air
12:30 AM veegee: sorry, I meant the building exhaust vents
12:30 AM veegee: I prefer negative pressure inside
12:31 AM CaptHindsight: and you'll need 2x the AC capacity
12:31 AM veegee: yeah if I have this on, that's for sure
12:31 AM CaptHindsight: maybe you should build a cooling suit
12:31 AM CaptHindsight: and just open the doors and windows
12:31 AM veegee: But the forklift is not for continuous operation. It would be like an hour a week or so
12:32 AM jymmmm: veeyou have a forklift, just remove the ceiling, LOTS of ventilation then
12:32 AM jymmmm: put it back when you're done.
12:32 AM jymmmm: veegee: you're welcome =)
12:34 AM veegee: Yeah and my forklift technically can reach it
12:34 AM veegee: But no need, we have several vent ducts
12:34 AM jymmmm: veegee: there ya go, problem solved.
12:37 AM jymmmm: veegee: These are great for air movement https://www.homedepot.com/p/Commercial-Electric-20-in-3-Speed-High-Velocity-Floor-Fan-SFC1-500B/302845111
12:37 AM jymmmm: none of those 20" box/square pieces of crap
12:40 AM veegee: the squirrel cage impellers have the static pressure capability which is important
12:40 AM veegee: The fan ones have very los static pressure
01:27 AM Deejay: moin
01:40 AM jymmmm: hi Deejay
01:48 AM Loetmichel: mornin'
01:51 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: hey
01:52 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: Do you use BMS on your batteries?
01:52 AM Loetmichel: which ones?
01:52 AM jymmmm: big ass ones?
01:52 AM Loetmichel: i dont have big ass ones atm
01:52 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: Well, do use BMS's?
01:53 AM Loetmichel: yes, but only for Li*
01:53 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: common or seperate port?
01:53 AM Loetmichel: lead acid and ni* can do without
01:53 AM Loetmichel: i dont understand the question
01:54 AM Loetmichel: you mean data port?
01:54 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: I'm trying to figure out the pros/cons of using common port BMS and seperate port BMS.
01:54 AM Loetmichel: i usually have none on my bmses, only a led to indicate error and maybe one for balancing
01:55 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32852570488.html
01:56 AM jymmmm: seperate port give you a dedicated lead for charging
01:57 AM Loetmichel: ah.
01:57 AM Loetmichel: no, never used those
01:58 AM Loetmichel: only those that are parallel to the cells and do the balancing and overcurrent/undervoltage/overvoltage protection
02:00 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: the ones you unplug from the load and plug into your charger?
02:02 AM Loetmichel: no, that ones that are permanently attached to the battery pack and are "invisible" in normal operation
02:03 AM Loetmichel: even to the charger unless the charger overcharges the cells
02:03 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: You leave the charger connected full time, even when not charging?
02:04 AM Loetmichel: usually yes, unless its a charger that cant handle voltage on the output if its not plugged in on the other side
02:05 AM jymmmm: k
04:48 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:55 AM XXCoder: hey
05:50 AM JT-Cave: another rainy day here
05:51 AM miss0r: I have a beautiful sunny day. Mosquitos are ruling the shade
05:52 AM miss0r: I'm planning on installing some downlight LED spots in the roof of my land rover camper conversion project. I have found these, that seem to fit my criteria. https://detled.dk/spot/799-id-led-indbygningsspot-25w-varm-hvid-3000k-ra92-hvid-5705387001576.html (The page is in danish, sorry about that). It would seem that these need some driver to be able to function, and they are listed at 4.6 volts. I would like
05:52 AM miss0r: to be able to dim these as well, and I have a 12vdc powersupply from the cars battery. Can you guys give me some hints as to what I need inbetween the spot and the battery to make this work?
05:53 AM miss0r: or I might even find some 12volt spots that will fit as perfect. But I have no idea what kind of drimer/dimmer I would need
05:54 AM JT-Cave: I'd like to be able to dim the lights in the coop to simulate sunrise/sunset too
05:55 AM miss0r: if you have grid voltage, that is easy :) Lots of controllers that can do that
05:56 AM JT-Cave: yea I have power and LAN in the coop, can that be done from a raspberry pi?
05:57 AM miss0r: no doubt
05:57 AM JT-Cave: sunrise and the chicks are awake time to clean and service the coop
07:01 AM JT-Cave: hmm WS2801 RGB LED strip might be what I need
07:34 AM Tom_L: https://tutorials-raspberrypi.com/how-to-control-a-raspberry-pi-ws2801-rgb-led-strip/
07:36 AM Tom_L: sunshine? wtf is that?
07:42 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you should get em a disco ball too :)
07:58 AM JT-Shop: lol
08:01 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, the thought was to simulate sunrise
08:03 AM methods_: you can run strips of the ws2812's with an esp8266 and wled too
08:04 AM methods_: https://github.com/Aircoookie/WLED
08:04 AM methods_: lot cheaper than a pi
08:04 AM methods_: https://tynick.com/blog/11-03-2019/getting-started-with-wled-on-esp8266/
08:07 AM methods_: you can get one of those d1 mini's for around $3
08:07 AM methods_: works great with wled
08:08 AM methods_: https://www.amazon.com/IZOKEE-NodeMcu-Internet-Development-Compatible/dp/B076F52NQD
08:08 AM methods_: $18 for 5
08:18 AM JT-Shop: I already have the rpi controlling the coop automation
08:33 AM methods_: ahhh gotcha
08:47 AM skunkworks: JT-Shop: probably has air tubes that shoot the eggs directly into the frying pan..
10:44 AM Loetmichel: *MUHAHA* ... according to my new coworker thats the only thing missing being a mad scientist. I just used brute force and a leatherman file to make a aluminium PC front lid work (was bent and the lockm disnt work properly) Him: "You are like a mad scientist that can make everything he need, just with tools you have on your person, only missing the laughter!" ;)
11:08 AM SpeedEvil: Loetmichel: why do you not carry a lighter?
11:08 AM SpeedEvil: Oh - nvm - misread.
11:30 AM * JT-Shop needs to make a Rube Goldberg egg cracking machine for the wife lol
11:42 AM SpeedEvil: 100t hydraulic press.
11:44 AM TekniQue: 30000RPM rotating blade capable of cracking 1000 eggs per second, two eggs per rotation
12:01 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: He just doesn't know you can turn your vape pen into a lighter/flame thrower =)
12:01 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: He just doesn't know you can turn your vape pen into a lighter/flame thrower/grenade =)
12:02 PM Loetmichel: jymmmm: add flashlight
12:02 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: seperate port BMS, pros/cons?
12:02 PM Loetmichel: :-)
12:02 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: That too =)
12:02 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: ?
12:02 PM Loetmichel: i usually have a flashlight in my pocket though
12:02 PM Loetmichel: and a torch lighter
12:02 PM Loetmichel: and a normal lighter ;)
12:02 PM sensille: and a welder
12:03 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=15868&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
12:03 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: For my large battery, I'm doing 36V or so, with ~4s*4p packs each with their own BMS in parallel and fuses and thermal fuses to each pack
12:03 PM Loetmichel: ... and another mini flashlight ;)
12:03 PM Loetmichel: and some USB thumbdrives
12:03 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: common port BMS use the same connector for load and charging, seperate port have a dedicated charging port, seperate from the load port.
12:03 PM SpeedEvil: And cooling for each pack in case it goes nuclear to keep every other cell under 80C if a pack cooks off
12:03 PM Loetmichel: add the leatherman and the smartphone on the belt... ;)
12:03 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: ah - common connector.
12:04 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Any benefit to seperate port?
12:04 PM SpeedEvil: You can fuse differently I guess.
12:06 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: I'll have the load constantly connected to the inverter, Just wondering if the load would draw from the charger instead of the battery.
12:06 PM jymmmm: err s/inverter/battery/
12:07 PM SpeedEvil: I am 'solving' that problem by connecting via diodes (will upgrade to ideal diodes eventually)
12:08 PM SpeedEvil: Two diodes from battery and mains supply to inverter.
12:08 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: They offer seperate port, I just can't figure out WHY (pros/cons) of it
12:09 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Yeah, diodes make sense. I'd like to be able to charge/use at the same time. Like if I add solar later on and not have to un/plug everything
12:10 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Are there any low voltage drop 60+ amp diodes?
12:11 PM SpeedEvil: Schottky diodes are typically 0.5V or so at nominal amps.
12:11 PM SpeedEvil: If you oversize the diode four times or so this drops to 0.2V
12:14 PM jymmmm: 240A diode or 4 in parallel?
12:22 PM CaptHindsight: oversize vs parallel
12:22 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: hmmm?
12:28 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: yes
12:29 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: haha, ok ok
12:30 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: So use 4 LED's in parallel (Red,Grn, Wht, Blu) is what your saying? lol
12:30 PM SpeedEvil: yes
12:33 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: WOOHOO Power pack light show =)
12:43 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Sorry to be a pita, I lost the link to the DC-DC you had linked me to, would you still have it by chance?
12:44 PM SpeedEvil: http://tinyurl.com/ybbdg6jk
12:44 PM SpeedEvil: I have not inspected this hardware
12:45 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Ok, you had linked me to something else, maybe I cna look back thru browser history to find it. I did find this btw... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000666014798.html
12:46 PM SpeedEvil: I forget what you were looking for
12:48 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: it's ok, I'll search history. But it was a buck/boost converter with CC iirc.
12:49 PM jymmmm: but something in the 30 to 60A range.
12:49 PM SpeedEvil: ah
12:49 PM SpeedEvil: My search is generally not complex. If you're looking for a 20A buck, then entering 30A buck and a voltage, for example may show you
12:50 PM SpeedEvil: As you will almost never want to run something at the rated value
12:51 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: ali is mucking with my searches, lol, I get all kinds of stuff OTHER than what I want. The one I linked you to as exampel never shows up, lol. Oh no, I want to over-engineer the ratings for sure.
12:51 PM SpeedEvil: ah
12:55 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Ah, found it
12:55 PM jymmmm: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32860858303.html
12:55 PM SpeedEvil: :)
12:56 PM jymmmm: YAY log files =)
12:57 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: do you have any pics of your setup/project?
12:57 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: it's not gotten that far yet.
01:00 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Yeah, I get it. I'm building up a parts list now, and starting to double-check the ratings of everything before I start ordering stuff.
01:00 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: I have a pile of ~1000 18650s, in boxes, and panels, butthat's not very informative.
01:01 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Just curious, where did you get the 18650's from?
01:04 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32974463553.html
01:04 PM SpeedEvil: I have cycled representative samples (10 of) to 100* with no measurable (>1%) capacity depreciation
01:05 PM jymmmm: Oh nice
01:05 PM SpeedEvil: YMMV of course, and what you get might not be what I got.
01:05 PM jymmmm: never heard of Liitokala before, lol
01:09 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: I'm still planning on using those 60A Lipo cells, in 4S. I *might* try 2P4S depending on the price of it all.
01:14 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: I saw someone make a ebike charger using this... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000666014798.html
01:15 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: and a PC PS
01:15 PM SpeedEvil: That isn't ridiculous.
01:16 PM jymmmm: lol
01:16 PM jymmmm: He 3d printed a long enclosure, and added 3 fans =)
01:56 PM veegee: What's a "pallet stacker"?
01:56 PM veegee: Is it just something that stacks empty pallets?
02:03 PM t4nk_freenode: or just a horribly undereducated employer
02:04 PM t4nk_freenode: euh
02:04 PM t4nk_freenode: employee
02:04 PM t4nk_freenode: darnit ;)
02:04 PM veegee: LOL
02:04 PM * t4nk_freenode resumes stacking some pallets
02:04 PM veegee: I just realized they have two forward beams as opposed to a counterweight so I'm guessing they're used to simply stack loaded pallets
02:07 PM veegee: Damn, it's raining and I left my forklift outside
02:08 PM veegee: I really hope it doesn't start rusting
02:19 PM CaptHindsight: hit it with some WD40
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: i think I have that supply ^^
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: in CC mode to power 500W LED's
02:38 PM veegee: I just bought the 10,000 lb lift with the weird rotating forks for $2,000 CAD including transport: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1501996533
02:38 PM veegee: I have a disease lol
02:39 PM veegee: I mean just look at it and what it can do. 10,000 lbs, what a beast. Only $2,000 cash including delivery and a skid full of spare parts
02:39 PM SpeedEvil: Does it say it runs?
02:40 PM veegee: The video clearly shows it running and operating
02:40 PM SpeedEvil: Ah- that diddn't load last time I tried it
02:40 PM veegee: And coincidentally, the owner is the welding supply store 5 minute walking distance from my office
02:40 PM veegee: An old couple who want to retire and getting rid of stuff. They said they bought it from the government so maintenance schedule has been followed
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: good deal
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: i had a real hard time selling my 5 ton forklift
02:42 PM SpeedEvil: That is really decent.
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: nobody wanted one that big
02:42 PM SpeedEvil: I could really do with a fork lift - but...
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: those older ones could lift their own weight, mine could handle 7-8 tons
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: just not to full height
02:44 PM veegee: Due to tipping over as opposed to structural integrity right?
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: and leverage
02:45 PM veegee: I'm going to use this big one to lift the top concrete plate off the truck dock
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: so now you have 2 forklifts?
02:45 PM veegee: yes
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: heh
02:45 PM veegee: Also going to use this one to lift the smaller 5,000 lb one to inside the unit
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: yeah better put the brakes on that
02:46 PM veegee: Yeah I'll secure it properly
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: but at your purchase price you can sell the smaller one
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: i haven't seen any going out of business sales yet
02:47 PM veegee: Yeah me neither, people are generally doing a lot better than I expected
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: i expect several over the summer
02:47 PM veegee: partially because Canada acted quickly and our prime minister isn't an orange clown
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: we just vote for entertainment
02:48 PM veegee: people are maintaining distance wearing masks, I'm super impressed with that
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: we also don't see him as a clown, he is a stable genious
02:48 PM veegee: ah yes, "a very stable genius"
02:49 PM veegee: I'm going to buy a T shirt with that on it
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: genious
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: we got tired of sane leaders back in the 60's-70's
02:50 PM veegee: Yeah blows my mind how anyone wouldn't want Bernie
02:50 PM veegee: The dude spent his life serving the people
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: now we just vote for someone that reminds of a mob boss or school principal
02:51 PM CaptHindsight: that wuss!?
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGUNPMPrxvA this guy could easily win
03:07 PM veegee: Idiocracy is too real
03:07 PM veegee: It's happening right now
03:09 PM XXCoder: yeah too many years of underfunded schools
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: so see your southern neighbor for what they are really doing vs what they say
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: it's like living in a national cult
03:14 PM XXCoder: you can see differences in police treatment too
03:15 PM XXCoder: protesters in state captial with rifles, and protesters definitely not in any building with no rifles. guess which got tear gas
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: cult members live in a bubble, listen to how they contort reality to support their argument
03:18 PM XXCoder: indeed
03:19 PM XXCoder: national guard was cut off one day before they would have gotten benefits. super pro-miliary people in cult is silent
03:19 PM XXCoder: its all about conformation to norms in cult.
03:20 PM SpeedEvil: Apparantly that is quite normal in previous activations
03:20 PM SpeedEvil: So, not 'new' behaviour, but...
03:20 PM XXCoder: yeah. its degree and subject thats odd, not that cult stuff
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: but when it's a country it's not a cult it's nationalism
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: or smaller group it's tribalism
03:39 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: what are you using it for and how do you like it?
04:21 PM Deejay: gn8
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: "in CC mode to power 500W LED's" CC = constant current
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: it's cheap Chinese
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: it works, but won't for a long time
05:42 PM veegee: What's the best way to label your keys if you have many?
05:42 PM veegee: Permanent marker will rub off
05:43 PM veegee: I'm thinking permanent marker with some kind of transparent heat shrink on top
06:03 PM FinboySlick: veegee: https://www.amazon.ca/TEKTON-6610-32-Inch-Letter-36-Piece/dp/B000NPUKY8
06:03 PM veegee: FinboySlick wow didn't even occur to me
06:03 PM veegee: Thanks!!
06:04 PM veegee: I also realized I can just engrave it with my CNC machine
06:04 PM FinboySlick: This is a cnc channel, you could go fancy with a V-bit too.
06:04 PM FinboySlick: Yeah, that.
06:04 PM veegee: Yeah I already have everything needed. Sometimes the most obvious answer completely eludes my brain
06:05 PM veegee: engrave and fill with oil paint
06:06 PM veegee: FinboySlick bonus points to you for posting the Canadian link <3
06:07 PM FinboySlick: veegee: I'm Canadian myself.
06:07 PM veegee: FinboySlick even more bonus points for being Canadian!
06:08 PM veegee: Whereabouts are you? I'm in Toronto
06:08 PM FinboySlick: Land of of the selfie-taking pantie-sniffer ;)
06:08 PM FinboySlick: I'm the nasty kind of Canadian, the french kind ;)
06:08 PM FinboySlick: (I'm in eastern Quebec)
06:11 PM veegee: Ah alors tu parles Français?
06:11 PM FinboySlick: Oui.
06:11 PM veegee: Je sais juste un peu
06:12 PM veegee: I only learned a bit for fun,
06:12 PM FinboySlick: It's a difficult language to learn. Much easier the other way around.
06:12 PM veegee: So I'm the
06:12 PM unterhaus: I watch all the French movies on netflix, still can't speak French
06:12 PM veegee: "no spek da engrish" version of French lol
06:13 PM veegee: unterhaus yeah I don't know why everyone says that watching TV helps learn a language.
06:13 PM FinboySlick: Lots of subtleties, metaphors and quirks in french. Spanish is more straightforward.
06:13 PM veegee: It doesn't for me. I need to actually study it and practice it
06:14 PM unterhaus: I get "je ne conprends pas" a lot when I try
06:14 PM FinboySlick: veegee: It actually does, that's how I got my english, and I'm picking up lots of spanish and a tad of russian now.
06:14 PM CaptHindsight: somebody was saying that their wife was learning German from watching TV but developing a Bavarian accent
06:14 PM veegee: yeah everyone learns different
06:14 PM veegee: I want to learn German and develop a nazi accent
06:14 PM unterhaus: I think you have to know quite a bit to learn from movies
06:15 PM CaptHindsight: i only learn when forced through immersion
06:15 PM FinboySlick: There's a game called 'Influent' that I found surprisingly effective at building up enough of a basic vocabulary to kickstart your brain.
06:15 PM veegee: unterhaus yeah agreed, need enough to understand a bit at least. Definitely not something to start with
06:15 PM veegee: Da engrishuu not my first language either
06:16 PM FinboySlick: But yeah, with languages if you're not using it you're not learning it.
06:16 PM unterhaus: I found one movie last time I tried that was all really simple. Detective movie. Usually they talk too fast
06:16 PM CaptHindsight: i ignore all English speakers when abroad
06:16 PM veegee: I did memorize Der Untergang from the hundreds of Hitler parody videos I watched though
06:16 PM CaptHindsight: stumps the Brits
06:17 PM unterhaus: netflix has a show in French where they cause an international incident by making fun of the way people from Montreal speak french
06:18 PM FinboySlick: Heck, I make fun of the way people in Montreal speak french.
06:18 PM unterhaus: "a very secret service" or in french "in the service of France"
06:19 PM unterhaus: They weren't wrong, I never thought about it before but when I was in France there were some people from Montreal and I couldn't help but laugh at the way they talked
06:19 PM unterhaus: It was only funny because of that show
06:20 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.stream4free.live/france-2-direct French talk show on now
06:21 PM CaptHindsight: the kids shows are easy to follow
06:26 PM FinboySlick: Heh, applying for a job and the form is "Out for maintenance." Doesn't make you feel too confident your resume's going to get seen.
06:26 PM CaptHindsight: how is the job market in Canada?
06:27 PM FinboySlick: Crashing like everywhere else.
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: we have 40 million on unemployment now
06:28 PM FinboySlick: Heh, that's close to our entire population.
06:29 PM CaptHindsight: heh externals.streema.com/tv/play/4918/?language=en covering uhmerican news in French
06:30 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: ah ok
06:36 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: I would not count on it for emergency situations
06:36 PM CaptHindsight: if it was a time emergency I would use it with fingers crossed
06:37 PM CaptHindsight: if it was part of a plan for an emergency I would use something built better
06:39 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: why's that?
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: cheap parts, toy fan
06:41 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: alternative suggestions?
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: what are your specs?
06:42 PM CaptHindsight: V in? V out? A out? etc
06:42 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: 16.8V@30A max output
06:43 PM CaptHindsight: what input?
06:43 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: 12 to 24V
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: DC?
06:44 PM jymmmm: y
06:53 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.artesyn.com/search/parametric/?search_type=parametric&power_type=dc-dc&package_size=&input_voltage%5B%5D=6&min_output_power=3&max_output_power=24000&output_voltage=16&output_amps=30&number_of_inputs=1
07:04 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.synqor.com/products/hvnq/nq20x20qgx40#content
07:08 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: likely 4x the price but will work when you need them
07:15 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Hmmm, ok. is it THAT one in particular that's questionable? What abot over buck and/or boost converters from china?
07:19 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: that last one is interesting to see just solder posts
07:23 PM SpeedEvil: At some point, you can just buy 3 of the cheap ones and diode-or
07:27 PM CaptHindsight: when the Chinese start to make decent products I'll let you know
07:27 PM CaptHindsight: they sort of do for their military
07:29 PM jymmmm: haha
07:31 PM SpeedEvil: The chinese make _excellent_ components if youhave QA requirements enforced.
07:31 PM SpeedEvil: Problem is, you ain't Foxconn
07:34 PM CaptHindsight: if you consider that stuff excellent
07:34 PM SpeedEvil: Meets specs with ~0 defect rate.
07:34 PM jdh: heh, I pulled a disk carrier out today at work.. label was Foxconn, Wuhan
07:39 PM CaptHindsight: Foxconn makes high volume trash
07:39 PM CaptHindsight: it's what they specialize in
07:45 PM renesis: china is like any other job shop
07:45 PM renesis: you get what you pay for
07:46 PM renesis: most people pay china shops shit and get shit
07:49 PM CaptHindsight: they still buy most of their precision parts from the west or Japan and Korea
07:52 PM CaptHindsight: they just stated making some thermal printheads http://www.sz-printing.com/en/about/?109.html
07:56 PM unterhaus: I was really impressed by the chinese equipment at IMTS. funny thing is, they didnt want you to take pictures because they were afraid you would rip them off like they ripped off the western companies
07:57 PM CaptHindsight: projection
07:57 PM jymmmm: lol
07:58 PM CaptHindsight: "they don't think or call it "ripping off" in China, it's just business
07:58 PM unterhaus: I don't remember any of the Chinese machines running though. I thought the companies that were making parts were brave
07:58 PM CaptHindsight: they have completely different view of fairness
07:58 PM unterhaus: I just thought it was funny that they were worried about someone copying them
07:59 PM CaptHindsight: good for me vs good for you
07:59 PM unterhaus: nobody else there was. I saw Chinese engineers asking to take pictures of the insides of machines
07:59 PM CaptHindsight: i was told to stop demoing equipment there
07:59 PM unterhaus: People let them
08:00 PM unterhaus: what were you demoing?
08:00 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: heh
08:00 PM CaptHindsight: they recognized a competitor asking me questions
08:00 PM CaptHindsight: SLA printers
08:02 PM CaptHindsight: wasn't even a working demo since the enclosure was made in a way that it required someone to be inside the printer to install all the fasteners
08:03 PM CaptHindsight: and they had 6 weeks to ask me about the design
08:03 PM unterhaus: the linuxcnc mailing list is quite annoying. Emails with 3 pages of quoted text and one sentence in the middle
08:04 PM CaptHindsight: well some people complain about top or bottom posting
08:04 PM CaptHindsight: i just stopped caring
08:04 PM unterhaus: can be taken too far
08:05 PM unterhaus: all email clients thread nowadays, cut out the stuff that you aren't responding to
08:05 PM unterhaus: top posting can be a bit weird, bottom posting merits an instant ban
08:06 PM CaptHindsight: i find myself caring about less and less
08:07 PM CaptHindsight: like the crap Chinese electronics, some people find it fine, it really doesn't matter
08:07 PM CaptHindsight: i don't have to work with them
10:04 PM Tom_L: miss0r, what diameter was that oil reservoir cap you made?
10:43 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: Walmart has a bunch of USB portable batteries with USB out for a few $. I got one 5Ah unit for $5 and a 20Ah unit for $7.
10:44 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Interesting, think it's legit AH ?
10:44 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
10:45 PM CaptHindsight: I used the 5Ah one yesterday to recharge my phone
10:45 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: link? generic? house brand?
10:45 PM SpeedEvil: It's getting to the point that it's not completely ridiculous to make large batteries from USB bats.
10:45 PM CaptHindsight: the 20Ah unit has been charging from a PC USB port for the past 5 hours and up by 25% from purchase
10:46 PM CaptHindsight: ~50% out of the box, now at 78%
10:46 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: the smaller unit is the house brand One
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: the larger is by "blackweb"
10:47 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Kinda hard to get 4S @ 60AH and under 15 lbs though
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: the shelves were full of them so they must have just been placed on clearance
10:48 PM SpeedEvil: jymmmm: I'm not saying it's sensible for mobile
10:48 PM jymmmm: SpeedEvil: Heh, yeah, But for those making a walmart power wall =)
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: these things have been available at Computex for >10 years
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: I have just recently been seeing them in the USA
10:49 PM jymmmm: The closest walmart really sucks
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: I have some larger ones that output ~18V for laptop backup or 14 hour plane trips stuck in coach
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: they are in the Electronics section vs the closeout isle
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: or aisle
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: our Walmarts are about 15-20 minutes apart
10:53 PM jymmmm: I'm in BFE, the "good walmart" is 60 miles away
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: so only 30nutes? :)
10:54 PM jymmmm: lol, yep
10:56 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: If I can figure out/find a decent AC PS and DC-DC converter, I should be able to get this power pack going
11:08 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: How much voltage drop is there in a DC-DC? I just found a 18V Switching PS and need 16.8 output on a DC-DC converter?
11:25 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: DC - DC converters can Boost up a voltage or Buck down a voltage or do both
11:26 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-ended_primary-inductor_converter
11:28 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: 16.8V is hard to get. I figured if I used a 18V PS, then kick it down to 16.8V I'll have minimal less and heat build up. But then I need to take 14.4VDC (car) and kick it up to 16.8V. I just wasn't sure if that was trying to be TOO EFFICIANT?
11:30 PM CaptHindsight: one usually wants power coming from a battery or solar cell to be converted to other voltages as efficiently as possible
11:31 PM CaptHindsight: is a car being used to power or charge a battery?
11:32 PM CaptHindsight: if so you have a bit of leeway, but you don't want to waste fuel either
11:32 PM jymmmm: car would be to recharge the battery
11:32 PM jymmmm: I was trying not to use two seperate converter;
11:36 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: oh hey, I think I might have found something... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000481501065.html
11:38 PM jymmmm: Hmmm, the description is ambigous, I thought it was BOTH buck and boost
11:40 PM CaptHindsight: (applicable for applications where the input voltage is higher than the output voltage cannot be boosted)
11:42 PM jymmmm: so just step down?
11:42 PM jymmmm: it's a stepdown only?
11:43 PM CaptHindsight: well it's written poorly but Buck only (step down)
11:44 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000666014798.html well if your budget is tight then I'd take the crap fan off and bolt on a much larger heat sink
11:46 PM CaptHindsight: if you can keep the fan clear of debris you could add a far more reliable fan
11:47 PM jymmmm: better fan I can do, I have craploads (even 15K RPM 1U server fans)
11:48 PM jymmmm: got heatsink grease, but no other real heatsinks
11:48 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32919692329.html
11:50 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32755229474.html
11:50 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32647370222.html
11:51 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32823612975.html
11:52 PM CaptHindsight: mount a good fan on those and even if the fan dies you're still good
11:52 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Compared to those, is the heatsink on the dcdc REALLY that bad?
11:52 PM CaptHindsight: it's about as small as it can be and not die in hours
11:53 PM jymmmm: IT doens't look "that" bad... https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/H9f9c6239f9a2464ba930b53bdbedfa1aA.jpg
11:53 PM jymmmm: the fan does though
11:54 PM CaptHindsight: its about surface area
11:55 PM CaptHindsight: it has thermal shutdown, but you don't want it shutting down because it got too hot
11:55 PM CaptHindsight: heat sinks are cheap and simple
11:58 PM jymmmm: Sure, I jsut don't know how hot it'll get if I only push 15A instead of the full 30A
