12:26 AM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: lol, I guess they were too cheap to use a 60A, so they used 3x20A
01:56 AM Loetmichel: mornin
01:56 AM jymmmm: hi
01:58 AM Deejay: moin
01:58 AM Loetmichel: *brrrr*... little bit cold to drive to work with open ragtop at 0800 in the morning here in germany... but fun with the "new" car ;)
05:08 AM Loetmichel: *giggle*... coworker: "that aluminium front lid of the PC is croocked, we have to deliver it today... what to do?? $me: "lean on the PC with all your weight please"... the took both lid corners and threw my weight into it... *kniirrrrzzz* "Fits. NEXT!" ... coworkers face: priceless ;) These lids: -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17631&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
05:09 AM Loetmichel: CNC router gantry was a bit "off right angle" when milling the 1.5mm alu sheets its made of.
05:17 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:26 AM Tom_L: morning
06:27 AM XXCoder: heys
06:40 AM jymmmm: morning
06:40 AM XXCoder: oh the end is here
06:40 AM XXCoder: hey jym
06:41 AM JT-Cave: lol
06:41 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: Qustion... Is there a keyboard shortcut for Yourtube playback speed?
06:41 AM XXCoder: dunno? never needed that
06:41 AM jymmmm: k, thanks
06:41 AM XXCoder: space to stop and play, right and left arrows to skip few seconds
06:42 AM XXCoder: up and down audio
06:44 AM jymmmm: Ah.... SHIFT+PERIOD. to speed up, and Shift+COMMA to slow down
06:44 AM XXCoder: wa state drops to #20 on covid cases. awesome
06:46 AM jymmmm: When paused.... PERIOD moves forward one frame at a time, COMMA moves back on frame at a time.
06:46 AM XXCoder: perfect for those one frame jokes
06:52 AM jymmmm: or scrn caps
06:56 AM jymmmm: Your PSA for the day... When you are testing to see if a UPS can open your garage door, make sure to unplug the USB cable from the laptop you are using to configure the UPS so that when the UPS goes into OVERLOAD it doesn't send a SHUTDOWN command to the laptop. Thank you and have a nice day =)
06:58 AM jymmmm: Oh if anyone has an idea on how to repurpose a brand new 210W UPS, please let me know
08:17 AM Tom_L: jymmmm, boat anchor?
08:20 AM JT-Cave: lol
08:27 AM * JT-Cave smacks his head on the desk... I named a python program cd for coop door but nothing happens when I try to run it... duh cd really you named it the same as a terminal command???
08:28 AM * Tom_L hi'fives JT-Cave
08:33 AM skunkworks: heh - funny!
08:36 AM jymmmm: Tom_L: That, or door stop
08:37 AM sensille: JT-Cave: wait, do you have . in your path?
08:37 AM jymmmm: JT-Cave: HIGH FIVE
08:38 AM jymmmm: JT-Cave: What about CCD - chicken coop door?
08:41 AM skunkworks: probaby a camera application...
08:42 AM jymmmm: HA, probably
08:43 AM jymmmm: Can't do cc either (gcc)
09:34 AM Loetmichel: maaan... each time the same problems... Prototypes... just swapped the DCDC 12->5V to an LT1086... screw it onto the alu enclosure (grounded) fired the monitor up: no 5V... "???" ... *studies the datasheet*. "Ah well, heatsink is on output... ANYBODY SEEN THE /&$%&$/&&( MICA WAFERS for TO220?"
09:41 AM skunkworks: how hard is it to terminate multimode fiber to lc connectors?
09:42 AM Loetmichel: skunkworks: usually you dont. just weld a pigtail on
09:43 AM skunkworks: I am seeing that..
09:43 AM * skunkworks is new to fiber
10:12 AM JT-Cave: sensille, no
10:36 AM Rab: Loetmichel, ouch
12:28 PM Loetmichel: Rab: i am used to 78xx, those have the cooling fin on GND
12:57 PM Rab: Loetmichel, there are also isolated-tab TO220 regulators, but I don't know if they can sub for a LT1086. There is also less thermal conduction since the package extends over the tab.
12:59 PM Loetmichel: i know
12:59 PM Loetmichel: i meant to say: i didnt check whats on the cooling pad because i am so used to the 78xx series that it never came to mind there COUND be anything but ground on it
01:00 PM Loetmichel: of course i checked the pinout for the three legs before makint the PCB
01:02 PM Rab: Of course 79xx have Vin on the tab, a rude design choice that might have been dictated by the die architecture.
01:13 PM Rab: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjb9FdVdX5I&feature=youtu.be
02:31 PM jymmmm: hola
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: is Amazon back to shipping non essentials yet relatively quickly?
03:06 PM dirty_d: yea kinda
03:06 PM dirty_d: not two days, but not more than a week
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: what if you order next day delivery does it actually happen?
03:12 PM dirty_d: I haven't tried yet
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: thanks
03:22 PM dirty_d: np
03:59 PM Deejay: gn8
04:30 PM * jymmmm lol @ CaptHindsight
04:31 PM jymmmm: I like this guy... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDfpl1_I904
04:51 PM CaptHindsight: pcw_home: is hostmot2.9 compatible with both SSI and BiSS mentioned in https://www.ichaus.de/upload/pdf/NQC_datasheet_E1en.pdf on pages 20-24?
04:56 PM pcw_home: Yes as long as its standard RX+TX BISS and SSI none of the funny chip select stuff allowed
04:56 PM CaptHindsight: pcw_home: thanks
04:57 PM CaptHindsight: I have a bunch of sin cos glass scales I'd like to reuse
04:57 PM CaptHindsight: have to decide which interpolator to build
04:59 PM CaptHindsight: maybe just good old quadrature to be safe
05:06 PM roycroft: hello, folks
05:06 PM roycroft: i'm refurbishing a drum sander, and i have a question about some bearings, which i think many here will know about
05:06 PM roycroft: the table that supports the conveyor sits on four pillar screws that rotate to adjust the height of the table
05:07 PM roycroft: the bearings on those support screws seem to be in really good shape, but they need to be cleaned and relubricated
05:07 PM roycroft: and that's my question - what kind of lubricant would be best for this application?
05:08 PM roycroft: they are thin roller bearings, and the "races" are just washers in which they are sandwiched, so they're not in any way sealed
05:08 PM roycroft: and it's a very dusty environment
05:08 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0756L1JDR
05:08 PM roycroft: that would be the bearings
05:09 PM roycroft: they support a fair amount of weight for their size, but they turn very slowly - a hand crank moves the screws, and as i said, they're just for height adjustment
05:09 PM andypugh: Some sort of grease, I would think.
05:09 PM roycroft: yes, but what kind of grease?
05:09 PM andypugh: At that price, for bearings, a cheap grease.
05:09 PM roycroft: i already figured that oil would get contaminated too quickly
05:12 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, some uhmw discs might even suffice in lieu of the bearings
05:13 PM roycroft: well i'll just use whatever grease i have on hand
05:13 PM roycroft: and try to figure out how to protect them at least somewhat from the sawdust
05:13 PM roycroft: thanks
05:15 PM CaptHindsight: sounds like you have it figured out
05:15 PM roycroft: and i'd be left with a sawdust sandwich
05:15 PM roycroft: just any cheap axle grease?
05:15 PM roycroft: i'm not concerned about damaging the bearings
05:15 PM andypugh: It’s hard to find anyhting other than NLGI2
05:15 PM roycroft: i'm mostly concerned about the while works getting full of sawdust, requiring disassembly and cleaning again
05:15 PM CaptHindsight: worst case you have sawdust and grease thicken
05:15 PM roycroft: it's a poor design - those bearings should be at least shrouded, if not sealed
05:15 PM CaptHindsight: then you blast with some solvent and relube
05:15 PM roycroft: and it's a pain in the butt to r&r them
05:20 PM andypugh: I haven’t seen sealed thrust bearings, but ordinary all bearings have a decent thrust rating, and are available sealed.
05:20 PM rmu|w: roycroft: don't forget to watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grUdsTTRGl4 to learn how to properly grease berings. ;)
05:21 PM rmu|w: bearings.
05:40 PM roycroft: those bearing are usually about $20 each, btw
05:40 PM roycroft: i may get that set of 4 just because they're so cheap
05:41 PM roycroft: if shipping weren't almost 2x as much as the cost of the bearings i'd have done so already
05:48 PM t4nk_freenode: heh, got my skf bearings here.. 22.50euro including shipping for 10pc ...
05:48 PM t4nk_freenode: *sigh* they'd better be worth it ;)
05:49 PM andypugh: The bearinfs for my lathe gearbox would have been £450 _each_
05:49 PM andypugh: (So I used something different)
05:50 PM rmu|w: i replaced the bearings in a 8kW 24krpm wood router spindle, the bearings wear about €800
05:51 PM rmu|w: s/wear/were/
05:56 PM jymmmm: ?!
05:57 PM t4nk_freenode: well.. both wear and were were correct in a sense
07:26 PM veegee: CaptHindsight , for forklift extensions, is there anything wrong with getting one size too big (in terms of width)? https://www.mrdockplate.ca/product/forklift-extensions/
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: it might only limit the pallets that it will fit
07:28 PM veegee: Ok thanks. I think I have 4" wide forks according to the spec sheet: https://www.hyster.com/uploadedFiles/Hyster/Content/North-America/Products/S50CT-TechGuide.pdf
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: but if you only go up 1" that isn't much
07:29 PM veegee: Oh just realized they're not out of stock for the ones I need. Never mind
07:29 PM veegee: Whoops spoke too soon. They have the ones 1" wider. I guess I'll get those
07:38 PM roycroft: so now on to a question about a different machine
07:38 PM roycroft: my router table has a water-cooled 80mm spindle, such as the cnc router folks use
07:39 PM roycroft: well, i think most of them use air-cooled spindles
07:39 PM roycroft: but wrap a coolant jacket around that :)
07:39 PM roycroft: anyway, the spindle is ss, so i was just using plain water as coolant at first
07:39 PM roycroft: but then i found that the coolant pump impeller is cast iron
07:39 PM roycroft: and i had rust water
07:40 PM roycroft: i'm cleaning that up, but i'm looking for a good coolant that does not need to be a lubricant, but is a rust inhibitor
07:42 PM roycroft: i have a gallon of rustlick synkool, but that seems more geared towards cooling/lubricating than just cooling
07:43 PM roycroft: all i need is a rust inhibitor and an antimicrobial agent
07:43 PM Tom_L: what's wrong with antifreze?
07:44 PM roycroft: if that would do the job i have no problem with it
07:44 PM roycroft: it's cheap and readily available
07:44 PM roycroft: is it going to get funky if it sits around exposed to oxygen though?
07:44 PM roycroft: i don't use this router table daily
07:44 PM Tom_L: dunno
07:44 PM roycroft: and i don't want to have to change the coolant every time i use it
07:44 PM Tom_L: anything sitting around could get funky
07:45 PM Tom_L: antifreeze typically lasts a long time
07:45 PM roycroft: synkool is about $35/gallon
07:45 PM Tom_L: even in the coolant reservoir where exposed
07:45 PM Tom_L: i use rustlick on mine
07:45 PM roycroft: automtive anti-freeze about 1/5 that cost
07:45 PM Tom_L: for coolant
07:46 PM roycroft: the rustlick synkook can be diluted a lot more than automotive anti-freeze though
07:46 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Rustlick1.jpg
07:46 PM roycroft: i think 10:1 is the ratio that was recommended for something like this
07:46 PM Tom_L: about the same cost
07:46 PM roycroft: yeah, that's not the same rustlick product that i have
07:47 PM Tom_L: normally only sold in 5 gal buckets i think the local supply packages it in gallons
07:47 PM roycroft: https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/00269803
07:47 PM roycroft: that's what i ahve
07:47 PM roycroft: have
07:47 PM Tom_L: mine is general purpose
07:48 PM Tom_L: i don't see a problem with antifreeze
07:48 PM roycroft: i'll lookinto it more
07:48 PM roycroft: as long as the anti-freeze is good at rust inhibition
07:48 PM Tom_L: 2 types maybe 3 for campers
07:48 PM roycroft: which it should be, since vehicles still typically have cast iron blocks
07:48 PM roycroft: thanks
07:48 PM Tom_L: pink, green for vehicles, and the stuff for campers
07:49 PM Tom_L: non toxic?
07:49 PM Tom_L: wrong time of year to find it at the box stores but they probably have a little
07:51 PM Tom_L: i think the pink is more for aluminum blocks
08:09 PM CaptHindsight: you can add quaternary ammonium to any antifreeze to provide anti-bacteria-mold-mildew
08:10 PM CaptHindsight: look for it as a disinfectant in just water
08:10 PM CaptHindsight: https://bsgwine.com/liquid-timsen-quat-1-gallo or similar
08:12 PM CaptHindsight: it's usually already cut 10:1 and you mix 100:1 in your coolant
08:13 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.brewcitysolutions.com/product/ensure-quaternary-ammonium-sanitizer/
08:13 PM CaptHindsight: if you coat a surface and wipe it down dry it will also repel dust
08:15 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: you have likely come across it from brewing suppliers
08:23 PM jymmmm: white vinegar
08:24 PM jymmmm: and good for removing rust too
08:28 PM CaptHindsight: but an acid
08:29 PM CaptHindsight: and requires a much higher concentration than quats
08:29 PM CaptHindsight: quats won't eat his seals
08:33 PM jymmmm: ah
08:47 PM jymmmm: This is cool... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI_HFnNTfyU
09:01 PM dirty_d: man, gcc's source code is horrifying
09:13 PM unterhaus_: I think physicists did understand how magnets worked in 1975, they just couldn't explain it to engineers
09:13 PM unterhaus_: Feynman answered a question about that, pretty interesting
09:15 PM jymmmm: the way the aluminum acted with AC was very cool; the more you added, the higher it floated.
09:16 PM jymmmm: unterhaus_: beer delivery system?
09:18 PM * jymmmm eyes a 500ft spool of 12ga wire and 8 MOT's
09:23 PM unterhaus_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO0r930Sn_8
10:04 PM jymmmm: unterhaus_: So, what's a magnetic force? =)
10:04 PM jymmmm: unterhaus_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sENgdSF8ppA
