12:29 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, ^^
12:35 PM Tom_L: :)
01:18 PM MacGalempsy: once all those chickens start laying at the same time, it will be egg city!
01:38 PM miss0r: meh. I can't figure out what brilliant place I decided to keep my blind rivets(the ones that goes pop)
01:41 PM jymmmm: miss0r: <--- BETWEEN THESE TWO WALLS --->
02:27 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Elmar_Wings/publication/273300642_Integration_of_real-time_Ethernet_in_LinuxCNC_Using_the_example_of_Sercos_III/links/5dc2da63299bf1a47b1be914/Integration-of-real-time-Ethernet-in-LinuxCNC-Using-the-example-of-Sercos-III.pdf?origin=publication_detail
02:28 PM CaptHindsight: The presented approach enables the integration of the Real Time Ethernet protocols Sercos III, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP and PROFINET into LinuxCNC via the PC card CIFX 50-RE. This integration was verified with the evaluation boards NXIO 50-RE.
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: didn't know that so many had been proven to work with LCNC
02:32 PM Tom_L: a well hidden fact
02:35 PM Tom_L: how old is 3.4.9 kernel?
02:37 PM Tom_L: mmm 2015... preempt-rt wasn't as popular as RTAI then was it?
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: late 2012
02:53 PM jymmmm: That's Soooooo last decade, get with the times man!!!
02:54 PM * jymmmm hides the 486SX50 out of view of the camera
02:56 PM jymmmm: Oh btw... APC UPS are PIECE OF SHITS. That has been your PSA of the day, that is all.
02:57 PM FinboySlick: jymmmm: They used to be quite good.
02:57 PM FinboySlick: The ones that still use lead-acid can be rewired to use automotive batteries, that's not so bad.
02:57 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: many moons ago. Seems they have cheapened out on things
02:58 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: Sure, but for that there's Lithium now
02:58 PM jymmmm: and lighter weight
03:00 PM FinboySlick: If space isn't an issue though, it's a lot easier to get your hands on a cheap car battery.
03:00 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: It botches about my generator
03:00 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: but can't use that indoors sadly, or shouldn't at least
03:00 PM FinboySlick: The gel ones aren't so bad.
03:01 PM jymmmm: gel, no problem, but the car/marine battery mod
03:02 PM jymmmm: I have this brand new 350VA UPS and can't use it for anything. I hae another one too, just no battery
03:02 PM jymmmm: I thught MAYBE I could toss in on the garage door opener, nope, overloads
03:03 PM FinboySlick: The ones I have are fairly old but you can get replacement batteries relatively easily. They aren't too cheap though.
03:03 PM jymmmm: and still use lead chemistry, they are made to be disposable, the UPS's I mean
03:04 PM FinboySlick: I haven't had much luck finding long-lasting lithium batteries myself, everything I have that uses them degrades about as fast as the lead/acid stuff.
03:04 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: what do you use them for?
03:05 PM FinboySlick: Tools and gadgets.
03:05 PM jymmmm: ah
03:05 PM FinboySlick: Heck, even my laptop is down to 50% capacity and the battery barely gets used.
03:06 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: but usually it's the OS that does management. I know that OSX will cycle the battery even if it knows it's full.
03:06 PM FinboySlick: I think my bias against lithium is more that they are designed as if the batteries are meant to last forever when they don't.
03:07 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: Well, it's really all about charge cycles, and use/abuse.
03:07 PM FinboySlick: I probably don't use the battery enough.
03:07 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: what brand laptop?
03:08 PM FinboySlick: It's a T520 Thinkpad.
03:08 PM FinboySlick: It's old now.
03:08 PM jymmmm: linux r windows?
03:08 PM jymmmm: or*
03:08 PM FinboySlick: Both, but it mostly never runs, it's there for emergencies.
03:08 PM FinboySlick: Which is what makes the battery wearing out so bad a bit of a bummer.
03:10 PM FinboySlick: I wish there were drop-in replacement supercaps. I'd sacrifice half the capacity for never having to worry about them wearing out.
03:10 PM jymmmm: Ah. I really haven't looked in depth of how they manage the battery to be honest. But when I have seen as an average life being 18 to 24 months. And that's noticing a pattern of about 500 users on average
03:11 PM jymmmm: both PC's and macs
03:12 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: I used to keep stacks of replacement batteries on hand =)
03:13 PM FinboySlick: Heh, part of me wants to build a magnetic-bearing flywheel 'battery'.
03:14 PM FinboySlick: Large scale pneumatic is neat too.
03:14 PM Rab: I don't believe those are good for long durations.
03:14 PM jymmmm: 200 lb battery for a 10 lb laptop?
03:14 PM FinboySlick: Well, it's for storage, not mobility.
03:14 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: Find a river =)
03:15 PM FinboySlick: jymmmm: I'm in Canada, we can't even hear those without a permit.
03:15 PM Rab: You could also pump water into an elevated storage tank, and use a little water wheel or turbine.
03:16 PM Rab: I guess you would need around 100W for a T520 plus losses.
03:16 PM jymmmm: FinboySlick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ieFZI4-6K8
03:17 PM jymmmm: Rab: that link for 3KW =)
03:20 PM enleth: trying RT-Preempt with a Mesa 6i25 on a Fujitsu Futro S900 thin client
03:20 PM enleth: if it works well with acceptable latency, it's going to be a perfect LinuxCNC+Mesa platform
03:21 PM enleth: less than $50 with a PCIe/PCI riser (both are available, so either a 5i25 and 6i25 could fit), small, still reasonably powerful
03:22 PM enleth: has two chipset-provided hardware RS232 ports, too
03:27 PM jymmmm: Rab: Ok, 600W, my bad =)
04:09 PM Deejay: gn8
04:39 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/Futro/s900/
04:47 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: DVI?!
04:49 PM CaptHindsight: DVI was the cats meow
05:58 PM net|: https://github.com/tecan/SDLQuake2-Dirty
06:17 PM _unreal_: dirty quake?
06:18 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, get your io all mapped?
06:18 PM _unreal_: no
06:18 PM _unreal_: I only got it connected yesterday
06:18 PM _unreal_: it was late by the time I got it connected
06:19 PM Tom_L: now the fun begins
07:07 PM CaptHindsight: are there any low cost sources? for decent roll bender dies/wheels
07:11 PM Tom_L: make some?
07:12 PM Tom_L: we made a set of progressive roll benders for my bud's neighbor once. he has a roll form shop next door
07:13 PM CaptHindsight: I can but I'd think that somebody must make pulleys and wheels of these types in volume
07:14 PM Tom_L: particular size / shape?
07:14 PM Tom_L: https://www.trick-tools.com/Tube_Bender_Dies_133?view_all
07:14 PM CaptHindsight: popular tube and pipe sizes 0.5 -3"
07:15 PM CaptHindsight: they hundreds per set
07:15 PM CaptHindsight: they are
07:15 PM Tom_L: manual or machine?
07:16 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.trick-tools.com/Pro_Tools_Roll_Bender_Dies_138
07:17 PM Tom_L: https://www.baileigh.com/metalworking/tooling-accessories/roll-bender-tooling/r-m7-tooling
07:17 PM Tom_L: maybe a little cheaper
07:17 PM unterhaus: too bad they don't make any diacro dies
07:18 PM unterhaus: there seem to be more diacro benders than dies
07:18 PM CaptHindsight: i see what their markeups are now on tooling
07:20 PM CaptHindsight: I have an induction heat treater steps from me
07:21 PM Tom_L: got a big lathe?
07:22 PM Tom_L: if your time is worth anything those aren't that bad
07:24 PM Tom_L: that is if you're planning to use them alot
07:24 PM Tom_L: not worth it for low volume
07:26 PM CaptHindsight: 2 axis tube and pipe bender
07:30 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__UAj2F00Ao
07:31 PM XXCoder: very interesting! https://youtu.be/RZ0BV73TAOc
07:31 PM XXCoder: could be used for tool length sensor too
07:31 PM Tom_L: yeah i've seen some pretty cool tubing/wire benders
07:31 PM CaptHindsight: just looking at design for the roll formers and the cnc tube benders
07:32 PM Tom_L: you'd need the square gripper parts too then
07:35 PM Tom_L: https://www.machinio.com/cat/cnc-tube-bending-machine#results
07:39 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: is it hot and muggy there?
07:39 PM Tom_L: was cooler today so not as muggy
07:39 PM CaptHindsight: i had a jacket on 3 nights ago it was high 30's at night
07:39 PM Tom_L: not that cool :)
07:39 PM CaptHindsight: last 2 days was 90 ish
07:43 PM Tom_L: 70 currently
07:51 PM CaptHindsight: 83F
07:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Hot-sale-steel-ring-pipe-benders_60403523300.html?spm=a2700.7724857.normalList.43.58046ea3BhYev3
07:52 PM CaptHindsight: ~$600, no hydraulics
07:53 PM XXCoder: extreme makers made pretty dang good one
07:53 PM CaptHindsight: semi-automatic
07:53 PM CaptHindsight: no guard around the chain drive either :)
07:53 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbqaH1kDztk
07:54 PM XXCoder: not kidding on extreme.
07:54 PM Tom_L: no roller bearings either it appears
07:54 PM Tom_L: dunno if that's a big deal on those
07:57 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, not good for sharp bends
07:57 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFsotPWLa_0 Making a tube bender die
07:57 PM XXCoder: tom yeah its quite string though
07:57 PM XXCoder: *strong
07:57 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, cnc a set
07:58 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: was thinking about a dedicated machine
07:58 PM Tom_L: his drill chuck is loose in that video
07:59 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: heh watching them do it all without a CNC or a mill
08:00 PM CaptHindsight: hand drills and angle grinder fun
08:00 PM XXCoder: they used a mill if I remember right, to add a groove on rod
08:00 PM XXCoder: but besides that yeah
08:00 PM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/FbqaH1kDztk?t=194
08:01 PM CaptHindsight: i do that in a hurry to temp something at 2am
08:02 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/FbqaH1kDztk love how they sync fps with rpm
08:03 PM XXCoder: milling using drill press
08:10 PM CaptHindsight: i have a bridgeport I can dedicate to this
08:10 PM CaptHindsight: i rarely use it and then it's a big drill press
08:12 PM CaptHindsight: but if I want to CNC make the keyways I should just make a dedicated machine
08:13 PM XXCoder: dont really see rationale of using cnc to make keyways its just a slot, but same time if you use dedicated machine you could also use special jaws
08:14 PM XXCoder: one that keeps centerline as both jaws move to
08:14 PM XXCoder: so it will always be center with different sizes of rods
08:14 PM XXCoder: *vise
08:15 PM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/vD9acXVdwew?t=1431 for higher feed rates
08:16 PM XXCoder: exactly zero rpm wow
08:16 PM XXCoder: ;)
08:16 PM XXCoder: cool tho
08:17 PM CaptHindsight: how to wear out the Z on your mill
08:18 PM XXCoder: i wonder how strong it has to be
08:18 PM XXCoder: ie could you just use very strong linear motor
08:20 PM CaptHindsight: you don't need the precision
08:22 PM Tom_L: those are pretty light cuts, probably no worse than plunge cutting an endmill
08:22 PM Tom_L: even less i'd guess
08:23 PM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/lLHMoRemmMg?t=61 slider crank
08:24 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgFQhvY0GsI
08:24 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:26 PM CaptHindsight: induction harden just the rollers contact area https://youtu.be/RUrBEn7QM2Y?t=19
08:28 PM XXCoder: interesting
09:07 PM jymmmm: pcw_home: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33029966730.html
09:09 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, fairly common for those boards
09:10 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: Ah, lcnc on here... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000272109285.html
09:10 PM XXCoder: interesting
09:10 PM XXCoder: "easy to use" not for me
09:11 PM Tom_L: i got mine for $30ish with a few things on it like led display etc
09:11 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: Fiiiine... color display.... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33050667207.html
09:11 PM XXCoder: i always wanted to get bunch of those eink displays and make actual framed weather display
09:12 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, couldn't find a link to mine but: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8lezpJhfAo
09:12 PM Tom_L: kbd, video etc
09:13 PM jymmmm: Tom_L: Nice, I know NOTHING about FPGA's
09:14 PM Tom_L: you got a mesa card?
09:14 PM jymmmm: no
09:14 PM Tom_L: :/
09:14 PM Tom_L: they're kinda fun
09:15 PM jymmmm: Oh I bet, just ZERO clue on programming them
09:15 PM Tom_L: verilog or vhdl
09:15 PM jymmmm: Not even logo =)
10:08 PM CaptHindsight: my neighbor closed up shop and left me a few buckets of Black and Decker drills and screw guns
10:09 PM CaptHindsight: just need new cords or brushes
10:10 PM CaptHindsight: seems they were cheap and never fixed any power tools the got
10:12 PM XXCoder: cheap and buy new tool to replace fixable tool
10:13 PM Rab: That could potentially be handy. I built myself some kitchen cabinets once, and had three corded drills set up with pilot, clearance and driver bits. I never had to change a tool most of the time.
10:14 PM Rab: If that somehow justifies hoarding buckets of cheap drills.
10:15 PM CaptHindsight: some steel drawer cabinets
10:15 PM CaptHindsight: and a plastic service cart, rubbermaid or similar but rugged
10:16 PM CaptHindsight: holds a car door stable
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: they had some box tube glass racks as well, 3-4" square, would have made for a nice mobile crane
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: 5ft high
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: but they went to scrap :(
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: funny what people find to be garbage and what of value
10:19 PM CaptHindsight: https://toyocc.en.made-in-china.com/product/VBcmCghEHlUW/China-a-Frame-Glass-Sheet-Storage-Glass-Rack-Storage-Rack-with-ISO.html
11:09 PM jymmmm: SSR Module, 10 to 8 relays... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32900650609.html
11:17 PM jymmmm: " three 20A fuses in parallel to protect against the risk of an unexpected short circuit on the output." Um, does that mean I get three chance to blow it up?
11:37 PM CaptHindsight: fuses in parallel are for playing guess which one blew
11:38 PM CaptHindsight: or just what order
