03:31 AM Deejay: moin
11:08 AM jthornton: isn't the surface of a jointer ground and not scraped so it's smooth?
11:08 AM roycroft: yes, it is ground
11:09 AM roycroft: but it's not flat
11:09 AM roycroft: it may have been once - it probably was
11:09 AM SpeedEvil: you can also do good grinding work on that level with an angle grinder and a sanding disk
11:09 AM SpeedEvil: Try on scrap first.
11:10 AM roycroft: the intent is to gain experience with scraping on something non-critical
11:10 AM Tom_L: sunny and 72° already
11:10 AM roycroft: so that when i get to my metalworking machines that i need to scrape really flat i'll not feel so intimidated
11:11 AM roycroft: are you thinking that the scraped surface will be rougher than a ground surface, and that the added friction may be an issue with woodworking, jthornton?
11:11 AM jthornton: yes
11:12 AM roycroft: i know that on metalworking machines the opposite is the case, as the scraped surface acts as an oil retainer
11:12 AM jthornton: I don't even think mine is blanchard ground but I'd have to look to see
11:12 AM jthornton: yep
11:12 AM Tom_L: i think it would be less friction due to the pockets created during scraping
11:12 AM roycroft: folks don't scrape woodworking machines
11:13 AM Tom_L: then i've never tried it
11:13 AM roycroft: but i'm kind of odd
11:13 AM roycroft: it's even hard finding discussion of tolerances of woodworking machinery
11:13 AM Tom_L: yeah they move the decimal place way over
11:14 AM roycroft: but what little i've found from sources that seem at least semi-credible suggests that 0.010" or so is the threshold for flatness on a woodworking machine
11:14 AM roycroft: and i'm well within that
11:15 AM Rab: *ahem*...for woodworking, that should be expressed as\ 1/100".
11:15 AM roycroft: but i look at those medium-sized cast iron surfaces that are not perfect and i think "that looks like a perfect opportunity to practice some scraping"
11:15 AM roycroft: actually, it would probably be expressed as "1/128", or "are you nuts? anything within 1/8" is more than close enough for woodworking!"
11:16 AM jthornton: not according to William Ng
11:18 AM roycroft: yeah, but he's not a woodworker - he's a professional furniture maker
11:19 AM jthornton: I built a copy of his crosscut sled and box joint sled but modified the latter for easier adjustment of the pin width
11:19 AM roycroft: i would not mind taking one of his classes
11:22 AM roycroft: i bought some router bits from him, and also a set of his square hole punches
11:40 AM FinboySlick: skunkworks: Thanks for the link earlier, always a treet to see your mill at work.
12:29 PM skunkworks: FinboySlick: going for the 70's porn look in recording..
12:36 PM FinboySlick: I have just the thing for you then ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18ljLPZEfjs
12:37 PM FinboySlick: It's instrumental, don't worry. But there are little intros to songs by Ron.
12:40 PM skunkworks: ;)
12:41 PM FinboySlick: Second track is my favorite.
12:57 PM andi_: how can i track position, velocity of my linuxcnc? :/
12:57 PM andi_: i got a lathe simulation running i think, and also wrote my little test program. can someone link me how to track the data
12:57 PM andi_: ?
12:58 PM FinboySlick: Position should be in the readout. Not sure about velocity.
12:58 PM skunkworks: halscope?
01:01 PM * jthornton bangs head on desk trying to remember how he setup the usb camera on the rpi it was something simple but not motion
01:31 PM seb_kuzm1nsky is now known as seb_kuzminsky
01:40 PM gregcnc: has capthindsight been around?
01:42 PM miss0r: evening
01:44 PM Rab: gregcnc, have not seen here since April 10.
02:31 PM MacGalempsy: no rest for the wicked today!
02:32 PM MacGalempsy: been working on this rostock max for the better part of this morning and we are just about ready to go!
02:32 PM friendofafriend: jthornton: mjpg-streamer is pretty simple.
02:33 PM jthornton: thanks
02:35 PM friendofafriend: Always welcome.
04:19 PM Deejay: gn8

06:50 PM Tom_L: just keep shrinking...
07:34 PM andypugh: Tom_L: I have some ansolutely miniscule boring bars. Now do I need a challenge?
08:08 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200421_200716.jpg
08:11 PM Tom_L: cool sam
08:12 PM Tom_L: andypugh, you could start with this: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Cube/Turners_cube1.jpg
08:31 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest95566
10:43 PM roycroft: grizzly.com are offering $25 flat rate shipping on all machines for a while
10:43 PM roycroft: and they're running some pretty aggressive sales
11:24 PM Wolfmetalfab is now known as Wolf__
