12:04 AM pink_vampire: flyback: omg!!
12:09 AM pink_vampire: what happened to you???
12:18 AM flyback: I fisted a flatbed scanner
12:18 AM flyback: and it was worth it
12:18 AM XXCoder: thats what she said
12:19 AM XXCoder: what was wrong with it anyway
12:22 AM flyback: no drivers past xp but that wasn't the end
12:22 AM flyback: it was damaged in the move it turned out
12:22 AM flyback: prism mirror broken and it kept jamming
12:22 AM XXCoder: doh
12:23 AM XXCoder: well turn it to camera or something lol
12:23 AM XXCoder: someone did and made fun art
12:23 AM flyback: dude the mirror was busted
12:23 AM flyback: it kept jamming
12:23 AM flyback: and giving locked errors when it doesn't even have a lock
12:23 AM flyback: it was done
12:23 AM flyback: 11 lacerations later
12:23 AM flyback: so was I
12:24 AM XXCoder: lol ok
12:24 AM XXCoder: cant find that site oh well
12:24 AM flyback: I eeen what you aere talking about
12:25 AM XXCoder: https://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/tech/scanner.html
12:26 AM XXCoder: there was one by other guy that had scanner go around fully. he moved around and made good picture
12:27 AM XXCoder: drat he links to one that might be it but site is gone
12:30 AM flyback: seen it long ago
12:30 AM flyback: nothing supports it
12:30 AM flyback: linux etc
12:31 AM flyback: the only thing that made it worth setting up a windows laptop
12:31 AM flyback: was really nice images
12:31 AM flyback: but it was done
12:31 AM XXCoder: too bad really. might have needed some lube
12:31 AM XXCoder: its years old
12:31 AM XXCoder: well and new mirror
12:31 AM flyback: the mount was broken out
12:31 AM flyback: where the mirror went
12:33 AM XXCoder: wonder if hardware is useful
12:33 AM flyback: I cursed God and sent my 60 yr old mother to bed crying
12:33 AM flyback: while I was at it
12:33 AM flyback: and tomarrow I plan to destroy everything else left in my life
12:33 AM XXCoder: isnt that slight overkill
12:36 AM flyback: nope
12:36 AM flyback: goodnight
12:36 AM XXCoder: night
02:38 AM Deejay: moin
05:30 AM jthornton: morning
05:31 AM XXCoder: hey
05:31 AM SpeedEvil: https://xkcd.com/ On precision
05:31 AM p0g0: g'day (freezing fog here, since folks seem to report their morning weather)
05:32 AM jthornton: 49°F and showers here, yesterday was nice so we went for a ride
05:32 AM XXCoder: SpeedEvil: man thats good one
05:32 AM SpeedEvil: Indeed.
07:16 AM Tom_L: morning
07:17 AM jthornton: morning
07:17 AM Tom_L: 51°F showers just stopped
07:41 AM skunkworks: rmu|w: heh - that doesn't seem so bad.. I was working in rpm.. duh
07:42 AM skunkworks: I would have to get or make a line driver for the mesa end as I just have 7i92 in there. No differential receiver. I doubt single ended would could that hight
07:42 AM skunkworks: high
07:44 AM skunkworks: pcw_home: thanks - cool!
09:51 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:20 AM Loetmichel: re from delivering a 3dprint to a firend 200km away... including a speeding picture. MAAAN when will i learn that some of the villages along the route have placed the speed cameras by the dozen? (at least it will not be expensive, 50kph posted, GPS said 61kph.)
10:21 AM gregcnc: how many are you allowed before they take your car?
10:22 AM Loetmichel: they will eventually take the drivers license
10:22 AM Loetmichel: not the car (ever) in germany.
10:23 AM Loetmichel: but to have your license suspended for a month you have to be 15kph over IIRC
10:27 AM Tom_L: some states (i know Georgia does) have what they call a 'super speeder' ticket
10:27 AM Tom_L: you get 2 tickets
10:31 AM gregcnc: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-p8uo7H3dv/
10:32 AM Loetmichel: ?
10:32 AM Loetmichel: why two tickets=
10:32 AM Loetmichel: ?
10:32 AM gregcnc: why not, they think it helps
10:33 AM Tom_L: https://www.atlantahurt.com/blog/all-you-need-to-know-about-georgias-super-speeder-law
10:33 AM Loetmichel: i mean: with what reasoning they can give you two tickets for the same offense?
10:33 AM gregcnc: somethign like one for speeding and another for being an idiot
10:35 AM Loetmichel: ah, i see
10:35 AM Loetmichel: hehe, in germany speeding is a lot cheaper in comparsion
10:35 AM gregcnc: our driving laws are about generating revenue
10:36 AM gregcnc: though they have gotten much more serious about DUI finally
10:36 AM Loetmichel: https://blitzerkanzlei.de/bussgeldkatalog/bussgeldkatalog-geschwindigkeitsueberschreitung/
10:36 AM Loetmichel: not THAT expensive
10:36 AM Loetmichel: the license suspension hurts though
10:37 AM Loetmichel: and note: we only have 7 "free" points on the license. if you have 8 or more the license is automatically suspended.
10:38 AM gregcnc: DE is not still locked down that you were able to freely travel?
10:39 AM rmu|w: in AT we have speed limits that activate based on air quality, if you exceed that you get a ticket for speeding and another one for pollution
10:40 AM gregcnc: regardless if you drive a 1L or 5L?
10:41 AM Loetmichel: gregcnc: "has to be a neccessary voyage"
10:41 AM Loetmichel: delivering a printed part to a "customer" qualifies ;)
10:41 AM gregcnc: LOL for your own good
10:41 AM Loetmichel: (as long as i dont call that customer a friend when the police asks)
10:42 AM Tom_L: gregcnc, if they differentiated they would all just put 1L stickers on the side
10:43 AM gregcnc: at least in america we can drive old 8L running on four cyclinders freely
10:43 AM Loetmichel: unless its california ;)
10:44 AM Tom_L: they're in a world of their own in many ways
10:44 AM gregcnc: just depends who you know
10:45 AM gregcnc: there is something about diesel trucks that aren't very old which will be illegal in CA very soon.
10:46 AM gregcnc: i have to go play with some old tractors and mowers
11:15 AM _unreal_: just finished 1/3 of my upgrades for my home machine
11:15 AM _unreal_: new drive nut setup for the X axis
11:15 AM _unreal_: its been running on a metal NUT driven by threaded rod
11:16 AM _unreal_: the NUT of all things is clearly wearing the thread ehh....... if its wearing I cant measure it
11:16 AM _unreal_: just switched my X nut to a Starboard threaded block. like my Y axis is
11:16 AM _unreal_: My y axis has NEVER given me issues
11:16 AM _unreal_: Z is still nut driven
11:17 AM _unreal_: but I have yet to see any play in it. AND Z doesnt see the kind of action the x/y do
11:17 AM Spida: fun thing: if you commit two traffic offenses in germany at the dame time (getting a speeding ticket with your cellphone in your hand) you will only get the more expensive fine, afaik
11:29 AM _unreal_: Spida, random
11:31 AM _unreal_: I also discovered My X drive coupler may have been slipping
11:36 AM _unreal_: ok the cnc seems to be working splendidly now
11:36 AM _unreal_: X backlash is CLEARLY gone
11:36 AM friendof1friend is now known as friendofafriend
11:39 AM _unreal_: no one talking sigh
11:41 AM andypugh: It seems I missed a lot last night about home-made drawbars
11:47 AM Tom_L: yeah we were waiting for your expertice
11:52 AM _unreal_: Tom_L, finished the first of my 3part upgrade to my home cnc
11:52 AM Tom_L: cool
11:52 AM _unreal_: Still wondering/wishing I had purchased a premade Z carriage but they all $$ sky rocketed in the past 6 months :(
11:52 AM _unreal_: I had to swich out the steel drive nut for an HDPE like my Y axis
11:53 AM _unreal_: the X nut was wearing badly
11:53 AM _unreal_: now that I have the starboard drive nut for X it should last for ever more or less
11:54 AM Tom_L: i ran a test part after adjusting my ballscrews in the ini file http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Cube/Test_cut.jpg
11:54 AM _unreal_: I clearly added resistance to My X lead screw but at least I know it will never wear out
11:54 AM Tom_L: everything came out within .001" of expected
11:55 AM _unreal_: I still have flex in the machine but at least I DONT have backlash in the nut
11:56 AM _unreal_: and when I ditch this original DIY Z setup I'll cut down on my flex a LOT more
11:56 AM _unreal_: aluminum will be EASY stuff
11:56 AM Tom_L: i still run mine pretty slow on steel
11:56 AM _unreal_: the next step for me Tom_L is to add my cross stiffening wire
11:57 AM _unreal_: I've never added it
11:57 AM Tom_L: dunno if i'd rely on wire
11:57 AM _unreal_: I have bearings mounted in the base of the machine so I can run a wire attach it to the +/- sides of the Y
11:57 AM _unreal_: Tom_L, wire will be just fine
11:58 AM _unreal_: or 1/16 steel cable if you will
11:58 AM _unreal_: it will just stop the +/- ends of the Y from skewing
12:06 PM _unreal_: ve7it, sup
12:06 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I just finished doing part of my home machine upgrades
12:07 PM ve7it: cool... have you powered up those pics yet?
12:07 PM _unreal_: no
12:07 PM _unreal_: not till I have the box and them mounted in them
12:07 PM _unreal_: and I was supposed to go to my friends house and get the box finished and he's disipeared off the face of the earth....
12:08 PM _unreal_: no idea currently
12:08 PM _unreal_: Very annoyed about this
12:08 PM _unreal_: its been 3 weeks now and he has yet to finish tacking it together
12:09 PM ve7it: easier to debug on the bench.... you can power them from a bench supply if needed... they dont need the big heatsink attached until the motor is wired up
12:09 PM _unreal_: :/ I have wires all over the place
12:10 PM _unreal_: ve7it, think I should get any ferrite rings for the wires?
12:10 PM _unreal_: motors? or input control?
12:11 PM ve7it: ya... I should have put better i/o connections... but it was an engineering prototype
12:12 PM ve7it: you probably wont need ferrites... the output stage is linear and wont generate HF noise. The encoder and command inputs already have some RC filtering
12:12 PM _unreal_: ok then rings on the 2 motor wires, and a ring for the input wires? the quadrature encoder wire is shielded
12:14 PM _unreal_: so no ferrites at all then
12:14 PM Tom_L: i'd just use shielding if anything
12:16 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I doubt the motor wires need shielding. If they are linear then they are just like a SPEAKER.
12:16 PM _unreal_: just getting amplified power.
12:16 PM ve7it: if your machine is wired with a VFD in the same cabinet, you might have to try and and quiet the vfd down
12:16 PM _unreal_: the VFD is going to be totally external
12:16 PM ve7it: good move
12:17 PM _unreal_: the wire is shielded
12:17 PM _unreal_: the internal ground is isolated. the shield is going to be isolated from the ground
12:18 PM _unreal_: My VFD runs off 110ac
12:18 PM _unreal_: so the onlything connected to it will be an ethernet cable
12:19 PM _unreal_: My plan is to have the motor be computer controled for speed everything
12:19 PM _unreal_: not going to bother with manual control
12:33 PM _unreal_: sigh
12:42 PM Tom_L: like a pendant?
12:48 PM _unreal_: meaning not planning on using the control buttons on the front of the VFD
12:48 PM _unreal_: nor wires going into the internal control wires for manual control
12:49 PM _unreal_: trying to find a connector like this that can handle 10amps https://www.amazon.com/Hxchen-Female-Connector-GX12-2P-Aviation/dp/B07V99W539/ref=sr_1_68?dchild=1&keywords=2+pin+plug+connector&qid=1587318442&sr=8-68
12:50 PM _unreal_: ! I could go with a 4 pin. and already be setup for stepper motor should I choose :)
12:51 PM jdh: there are many 4 pin variants
12:52 PM _unreal_: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D3DC1PD/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2NNH5C5IP9N3O&psc=1
12:52 PM _unreal_: That one says 15amp
12:55 PM jdh: I ordered some cheap ones once...they showed up and were tiny.
12:56 PM Tom_L: i used those on mine. my local guy had from 2 to 8? pin plugs
12:56 PM Tom_L: but i'm not drawing 10A
01:21 PM _unreal_: ok just ordered some 4 pin one's that claimed 15 amp
01:21 PM _unreal_: So that works out good regardless because then if I need a stepper motor I already have the pins
01:29 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/PDF/wiring_grounding_and_shielding_techniques.pdf
01:33 PM _unreal_: tom I put the wire that my kit suggested
01:34 PM _unreal_: Now when I get my new spindle motor That will be a different ball game. I dont know what that one is going to require
02:35 PM _unreal_: fark
02:35 PM _unreal_: I guess its time to go change the oil in my car
04:21 PM Deejay: gn8
04:38 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200419_153130.jpg
04:42 PM andypugh: Is that the shaft you intend to use?
04:43 PM andypugh: I had an interesting idea for an encoder drive today. Use a car / motorcycle speedo cable drive at the spindle, then take the cable to another one, running backwards, and driving an encoder.
04:48 PM skunkworks: andypugh: no. that is the go-no go gauge
04:50 PM andypugh: :-)
04:50 PM skunkworks: I don't know that the aluminum is... It cut really hard - and when you run a file across it - it is tough
04:51 PM Rab: andypugh, I don't think a speedo cable typically operates that fast. Maybe a tach cable. But my first choice would be a rotary tool flex shaft, e.g. Foredom or a knockoff.
04:52 PM andypugh: It really about something with a big through-bore at the spindle end.
04:55 PM skunkworks: andypugh: that is the shaft..
04:55 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200419_165350.jpg
04:55 PM XXCoder: gonna love mystery alloys
04:56 PM XXCoder: i saw one guy make a knife handke out of rebar4
04:56 PM andypugh: With a really light pulley you could probably have relied on the internal bearings in the encoder.
04:56 PM XXCoder: it was mystery steel, and you could see drill twist randomly change as it drilled lol
04:56 PM skunkworks: yah - chattering like crazy - thought I made a mistake and it was steel
04:56 PM XXCoder: varying strengths inside it
04:57 PM andypugh: I probably should have mentioned that 2 days ago or not at all, shouldn’t I?
04:59 PM skunkworks: andypugh: I didn't want to rely on the bearing in the encoder.. the way it mounts makes me leary of putting side force on it
05:01 PM andypugh: Well, the mount is so that it can self-align to the motor shaft using it’s own bearing. But you could mount it rigidly without the spring suspension if it was driven with a not-too-tight belt.
05:03 PM Tom_L: encoder doesn't need a big belt either
05:03 PM Tom_L: even a 3d printer size would do
05:04 PM Tom_L: provided you can find them to fit the shaft :)
05:06 PM skunkworks: You guys... Arm chair machinist...
05:06 PM Tom_L: but then i use what i have on hand
05:06 PM XXCoder: unfair, my chair dont have arms
05:07 PM Tom_L: always glad to help after the fact btw :)
05:07 PM andypugh: Hey, one of the comments on my last Youtube video was “you make it look easy, the sign of a professional”. I didn’t know how to respond to that, so didn’t. I am a total amateur.
05:08 PM XXCoder: you IS a pro compared to me
05:12 PM skunkworks: ;)
05:18 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: yes - I used some old crap I had..
05:19 PM skunkworks: andypugh: I find video editing helps...
05:19 PM skunkworks: ;)
05:19 PM skunkworks: Almost broke a probe end? edit out..
05:19 PM Tom_L: hah
05:21 PM XXCoder: lol
05:21 PM XXCoder: "why is that probe now different color?"
07:29 PM jymmmm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd3gvzk3fLs <-- Most Dangerous Ways To School | NICARAGUA
07:30 PM jymmmm: 9yo and 7yo girls row 2.5 hours to get to school, and 2.5 hours back
07:30 PM Tom_L: that's nothing..... when i was a kid...
07:30 PM XXCoder: when I was a kid I stayed at school 5 days a week
07:34 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, upstream both ways?
07:34 PM XXCoder: dorms was so damn boring
07:34 PM XXCoder: it was before internet
07:35 PM XXCoder: comoputers really
07:35 PM XXCoder: (computers around but school couldnt afford em, too expensive)
07:35 PM Tom_L: had telegraph been invented yet?
07:35 PM jdh: we had a Wang(tm) when I was in 10th grade
07:35 PM JavaBean: i think you are asking if dinosaurs attacked the campus daily
07:36 PM Tom_L: i _do_ remember when the math teacher got the very first HP calculator
07:36 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: lol not that ancient
07:36 PM Tom_L: he was damn proud of it
07:36 PM jymmmm: Tom_Lupstream on the return trip
07:38 PM jymmmm: XXCoder: Oh, in that case.. 4 days to walk to 60 miles miles to school...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEJpkEctSEA
07:40 PM XXCoder: lol nah
07:40 PM XXCoder: each sunday and friday I rode grayhound to school and back
07:43 PM skunkworks: did you guys see this old tonys new video. He is funny..
07:43 PM skunkworks: (talking about up hill both ways)
07:44 PM XXCoder: spocket video?
07:45 PM XXCoder: rocket wobble lol
07:45 PM XXCoder: sometimes autocaptions is fun
07:46 PM jymmmm: This is kinda a cool channel... https://www.youtube.com/user/FreeDocumentary/videos
07:50 PM skunkworks: yes - the sprocket wabble
07:51 PM XXCoder: lol
07:59 PM andypugh: The original part really was super-terrible. He needed skunkworks magic boring system to make a new D-hole
07:59 PM XXCoder: yeah wow part was by monkeys
08:00 PM XXCoder: i mean, tol +- probably was 1.0" +=
08:36 PM norias: hello
08:36 PM XXCoder: hey
08:48 PM norias: oh
08:48 PM norias: sorry, XXCoder
08:49 PM norias: I blanked out for a couple minutes
08:49 PM XXCoder: np
08:49 PM norias: no one has posted on r/linuxcnc in 2 years
08:49 PM norias: hmm
08:50 PM norias: 8 year old forum with 6 posts
08:54 PM norias: i think my view of things is skewed by my experience
08:54 PM norias: hmm
08:54 PM norias: i'm going to need to think out of my own box

09:19 PM norias: :)
09:51 PM andypugh: i didn’t know there was an r/linuxcnc
09:53 PM andypugh: There is a Discord too.

11:09 PM _unreal_: dinner was DAMN good
11:09 PM _unreal_: did ribs
11:10 PM _unreal_: 5 hours cook time :)
11:10 PM _unreal_: HELLLA good
11:15 PM Tom_L: you get your control box built?
11:16 PM XXCoder: whos you asking
11:17 PM Tom_L: _unreal_
11:17 PM XXCoder: ah cool
11:18 PM Tom_L: haven't seen any update pics in a while
