02:02 AM Loetmichel: mornin'
02:07 AM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: yes, just arrived at the company. STILL not really awake. our mechanical Engineer/Telephone girl was roaming around and said "dont be startled by me standing behind the door!"... looks at me: "ah, you dont get startled, especially ind not fully awake yet, i forgot." $me "yep!" :-)
02:17 AM Deejay: moin
02:54 AM Loetmichel: *sigh* ordererd 30 2mm mill bits that arrived yesterdy. new coworker already killed 8 :-(
02:58 AM sensille: that is expensive
02:59 AM sensille: doesn't he care?
03:01 AM Loetmichel: new guy, student fresh from university (closed). cant expect him to know every kink of those machines.
03:01 AM Loetmichel: also i shouldnt have programmed the gcode on the edge of what that machine/mill bits are capable of, speed wise
03:05 AM Loetmichel: I have now set the feed override to 60%. works so far. only 20 plates more to go ;) (with a few 100 air vent holes in each)
03:31 AM the_ment: hello
03:32 AM the_ment: any ideas for temperature control mechanism that is more advanced than PID?
04:51 AM rue_mohr: PD
04:52 AM jthornton: morning
04:52 AM XXCoder: hey
04:52 AM XXCoder: jt the robo broke heh
04:52 AM XXCoder: so im stuck doing nasty job
04:52 AM XXCoder: rough on hard steel part ugh
04:52 AM XXCoder: only postive is 3 parts a day
04:55 AM Tom_L: morning
04:55 AM XXCoder: hey tom
04:56 AM Tom_L: you read during part changes?
04:56 AM jthornton: going to be sunny and 80°F here today... going to ride the mountain bike for sure
04:56 AM Tom_L: starting to dry out here
04:56 AM Tom_L: similar day ahead
04:57 AM jthornton: more rain friday night and saturday here
05:04 AM pink_vampire: hi
05:05 AM jymmmm: morning
05:05 AM pink_vampire: hi jymmmm
05:05 AM XXCoder: hey pink
05:05 AM jymmmm: hi pinky
05:05 AM pink_vampire: hi XXCoder
05:06 AM pink_vampire: how is life?
05:06 AM XXCoder: sucks.
05:06 AM jthornton: https://gnipsel.com/images/garden/raised-beds/winter-tomatoes-01.jpg
05:06 AM jymmmm: 52f/32f today, patches of snow still on ground
05:06 AM jthornton: I planted those tomato plants in the raised beds yesterday
05:07 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: why??
05:07 AM XXCoder: pollen allegy and work envorment air is really taking me down
05:07 AM pink_vampire: jthornton: almost ready to make pizza
05:07 AM XXCoder: my lungs simply cant clean out that fast
05:07 AM pink_vampire: are you using a respirator?
05:07 AM XXCoder: no
05:08 AM pink_vampire: start using one,
05:08 AM XXCoder: crap masks only at work
05:08 AM pink_vampire: I have the 3m 6200 with the OV filters
05:09 AM XXCoder: basically cant buy any such thing here now
05:09 AM XXCoder: company normally has n95 masks at all time
05:09 AM XXCoder: they only have crap one now
05:09 AM pink_vampire: you must use something better then the paper masks
05:09 AM jymmmm: jthornton: lightweight concrete raise garden panels DIY https://manabouttools.com/make-thin-csa-concrete-garden-boxes-part-4/
05:10 AM jymmmm: jthornton: I thought they looked really nice, and modular
05:10 AM XXCoder: jym nice!!
05:11 AM jthornton: interesting indeed
05:12 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/333558674517
05:12 AM XXCoder: 85 usd. whats normal price
05:13 AM pink_vampire: $30
05:13 AM XXCoder: than im not buying
05:13 AM XXCoder: fuck profiteers
05:14 AM pink_vampire: it is the only option I found
05:14 AM XXCoder: yeah ill just keep going as usua;
05:14 AM XXCoder: its not first problem i got, and wont be last
05:15 AM jthornton: https://www.envirosafetyproducts.com/3m-6200-half-facepiece-respirator.html
05:15 AM XXCoder: 2 to 3 month lead time oucjh
05:15 AM XXCoder: saving link for later
05:17 AM XXCoder: jt hm someone said i should be in "at risk" group
05:17 AM XXCoder: because corona will kill me
05:17 AM pink_vampire: https://www.ebay.com/itm/324078269401
05:18 AM pink_vampire: I found this one!
05:18 AM jymmmm: the p95 (better than the N95) mask from harbor freidht is made in USE and $18 half mask, I love mine and replacement filters are available
05:18 AM jymmmm: USA*
05:18 AM XXCoder: interesting, first time i see "seller is away till ..."
05:18 AM XXCoder: at ebay
05:18 AM XXCoder: jy yeah? interesting, might be an option
05:19 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: try to place an order..
05:19 AM XXCoder: nah im looking into p95 now
05:19 AM pink_vampire: maybe you will be able to get it in that price
05:20 AM pink_vampire: jymmmm: HF don't sell PPE stuff anymore - they donated everything
05:20 AM pink_vampire: same with fastenal
05:20 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: It fitered out bleach and everything, couldn't smell anything
05:20 AM XXCoder: no wonder i cant find it
05:20 AM jymmmm: pink_vampire: Yeah, "not found" on HF website now, gee thanks.
05:21 AM jymmmm: gee thanks HF*
05:21 AM XXCoder: lol
05:22 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: get from ebay
05:22 AM XXCoder: soon half million recorded cases of corna. sucks
05:22 AM jymmmm: There were 6 4.0+ earthquakes yesterday all around the pacific crust
05:22 AM jymmmm: pacific coast of russia had 3 5.0+ EQ's
05:23 AM jymmmm: ...over 12 hours
05:24 AM XXCoder: its end of world
05:24 AM XXCoder: nah
05:24 AM XXCoder: end of worlders is annoying
05:25 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: if you get something, make sure the filter is P100, and also Organic Vapor
05:25 AM XXCoder: ok
05:25 AM XXCoder: problem is wearing it for work everyday is weird, and will have sores :(
05:25 AM XXCoder: so even with it it wont last forever
05:26 AM pink_vampire: I'm using it all day
05:26 AM pink_vampire: the silicon is very soft
05:26 AM XXCoder: errm im very slightly allegric to silican
05:26 AM pink_vampire: don't strap it very strong,
05:27 AM XXCoder: skin will go not great then slight rash
05:28 AM pink_vampire: you must clean the inside part of the mask each time before you use it. - this is a must.
05:29 AM pink_vampire: same with the face.
05:29 AM XXCoder: makes sense
05:29 AM XXCoder: constantly humid. not great
05:29 AM pink_vampire: here it's cold and dry
05:30 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: clean your face with bleach and a wire brush
05:30 AM XXCoder: here its in very heavy rain season, finally though seem to be ending soon already. usually over month
05:31 AM XXCoder: just read about stunning dumb people
05:31 AM jymmmm: XXCoder: stun gun?
05:31 AM XXCoder: during coronavirus thing, missionaires tried to contact amazon people again
05:31 AM jymmmm: dumbasses
05:31 AM XXCoder: they are very isulated, if one of dumbasses had coronavirus..
05:31 AM XXCoder: dead, all of em
05:31 AM pink_vampire: someone want pancakes?
05:32 AM XXCoder: no thanks just ate dinner
05:32 AM rmu|w: for the missionaries, dead doesn't matter
05:32 AM rmu|w: the only thing that matters is baptized before death or nor
05:32 AM rmu|w: not
05:33 AM jymmmm: SMH
05:33 AM rmu|w: in the dark ages there have been some pretty ridiculous rules regarding executions of non-believers
05:33 AM jymmmm: you mean yesterday?
05:33 AM XXCoder: rmu including killing people who recently force-converted to ensure they stay good christians
05:34 AM rmu|w: executing a non-believer was usually not a big deal, but usually they tried to baptize them while execution was ongoing
05:35 AM rmu|w: the thing was to avoid executing a baptized christian, so you had to choose the moment of baptizing very carefully after inflicting a mortal wound but before the person was dead
05:35 AM XXCoder: fun
05:36 AM rmu|w: those "missionaries" should be fed their own medicine from some other religion, e.g. transplant them into taliban camp
05:36 AM rmu|w: and vice-versa
05:36 AM XXCoder: sorry, not into rough vigilite justice
05:39 AM rmu|w: XXCoder: think "study trip"
05:39 AM XXCoder: hah
05:39 AM rmu|w: to get a more diversified perspective on things
05:40 AM rmu|w: force-removal of religious blinders ;-)
05:40 AM XXCoder: i wonder what kind of office work I can do
05:48 AM p0g0: jthornton, I did not look at your raised tomato beds- I have such in my greenhouse. Tomatoes need a pollinator (or a purchased and applied hormone), so my tomatoes were a luscious green, leafy, and utterly unproductive, not a single fruit in the greenhouse since I don't keep a hive of bees in there.
05:49 AM XXCoder: isnt there a way to "rent" bees?
05:49 AM p0g0: Oh, I can manage the issue now that I see it coming.
05:49 AM XXCoder: cool :)
05:49 AM p0g0: The commercial bee folks do rent. but not around here.
05:49 AM p0g0: That's more a coastal orchard thing.
05:50 AM p0g0: I have lots of bees anyway, both european and native- they just die like flies in the greenhouse.
05:51 AM XXCoder: hmm any way to use em? or you use something else?
05:52 AM p0g0: The mites and pesticide issues with european bees is already an issue here, but I've taken a census of the local natives, and have > 10 species, as well as some interesting butterflies.
05:52 AM XXCoder: heard one of issues of bees is diet. they need more vareity than all same plant
05:53 AM p0g0: I will just get the fruit set hormone if I try tomatoes in the greenhouse again. I might,as I have a strain of local tomato that has been raised here for >75 years, and I seem to be the only one left with that variety.
05:53 AM XXCoder: ouch
05:53 AM XXCoder: try keep that going and save seeds give to some people
05:54 AM XXCoder: more and more anti-seed stuff out there for farming, and monocultures
05:54 AM p0g0: Yeah, bees are under a lot of stress, the GE biocides, the varona mite, pesticides and herbicides are all hammering them.
05:55 AM p0g0: I have done the Raise Hundreds and Give Them Away, that seems to last about 1 season. If you want to keep the strain pure, it needs an isolated crop, and that's harder for most home gardeners.
05:56 AM XXCoder: :(
05:56 AM XXCoder: i recently read about "seedless" avocodo
05:56 AM XXCoder: crazy
05:56 AM p0g0: Some of us live in the middle of nowhere, so it's just a natural thing...
05:56 AM Loetmichel: auaua! *jump around* *suchk at the right pinkie* ... just bent some alu... managed to drop the 30lb steel bar ("bending tool" onto my finger from one foot above... maaan its nice when the pain subsides :-(
05:57 AM XXCoder: p0 i want to grow one of those trees but its so hard lol
05:57 AM p0g0: Loetmichel, we are going to start a betting pool on how often you self-injure...
05:57 AM XXCoder: its so hard to just germate seed
05:57 AM XXCoder: you have one or more of those trees?
05:57 AM p0g0: What, the avocado?
05:57 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:58 AM Loetmichel: p0g0. no injury. just a bit of pain. already good... :-)
05:58 AM p0g0: No I do not, but they are the classic stick some toothpicks in them and hang them half submerged in water...
05:59 AM p0g0: Loetmichel, So we have some different classes of bet: Painful, Bleeding, Needs Hospital...
05:59 AM Loetmichel: the last is pretty rare though
06:00 AM p0g0: XXCoder, I split the greenhouse between flowers and garden stuff, not really big enough for a tree.
06:01 AM p0g0: Loetmichel, we'd have to trust you to not throw the game tho...
06:02 AM XXCoder: loet wait till 1:20 on you losing a finger, and we bid million bucks?
06:02 AM p0g0: XXCoder, I wouldn't want to add a "maimed" category.
06:02 AM XXCoder: lol
06:03 AM Loetmichel: i would say thats pretty low probability, considering i am 51 now and still dont miss ANY appendages.
06:04 AM p0g0: I took an economics course in college that talked about an Italian economist, Pareto, that sorted out how to value injuries like that- a sort of bidding market: If I offered you $500,000 for your left arm sort of stuff.
06:05 AM Loetmichel: p0g0: i may be a bit careless, but i am also pretty lucky. never any serious injury ;)
06:05 AM Loetmichel: (for varying definitions of "serious") ;)
06:05 AM p0g0: Loetmichel, yeah, you do seem to keep them in the often but small category, sort of the $1 lottery ticket class of betting.
06:13 AM Loetmichel: its also kind of an attitude thing. i mean i cut open my palm down to the point where you can see the thumb muscle move... "nah, no problem, few stitches, back to work"... someone other may have taken 2 weeks ill leave on that.
06:14 AM XXCoder: i have way too many problems
06:14 AM XXCoder: i just keep going
06:14 AM Loetmichel: went to the ER, gto stiched up, went back to the company, cleaned up the bloddy mess (pun intended), continued working.
06:14 AM XXCoder: once teased boss about bringing his shotgun to work if I ever die, because I might go to work anyway
06:14 AM Loetmichel: got
06:15 AM Loetmichel: :-)
06:15 AM Loetmichel: same
06:15 AM Loetmichel: but i live in germany, here the doc can write you a "yellow slip" and send you home and the boss cant do a thing and still has to pay you. cant even fire you for it.
06:16 AM Loetmichel: so here that attitude isnt that widespread
06:17 AM XXCoder: usa they can fire you for wearing yellow shirt
06:17 AM XXCoder: the "right to work" states
06:17 AM XXCoder: name is a sick jpoke
06:18 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: yeah, not so much in germany. here the workers are pretty safe. "hire and fire" isnt really a thing.
06:18 AM XXCoder: cool :)
06:18 AM XXCoder: im just in diffult position now
06:19 AM XXCoder: i really suck on interviews so are nearly unhirable heh
06:19 AM Loetmichel: often times a worker does his apprenticeship oin a company and stays at that company til he retires
06:19 AM XXCoder: and im not sure what to do if I need to go post-0machinist job
07:45 AM Loetmichel: maan, five hours at work, JUST managed to start the cad to continue my main job desinging a new enclosure. some days are so many distractions it isnt even funny any more. :-(
08:41 AM Lee-: XXCoder, what type of work are you looking for?
09:10 AM rmu|w: going to start my brother TC225 retrofit in a bit. according to https://forum.linuxcnc.org/30-cnc-machines/32276-brother-tc-225-tc-229-adventure there is much fun to be had.
09:25 AM gregcnc: original brother control?
09:25 AM rmu|w: yes
09:25 AM gregcnc: not running or?
09:26 AM rmu|w: kinda
09:26 AM rmu|w: but drip-feeding programs at 4800bps is no fun
09:26 AM gregcnc: well it is a drill tap
09:26 AM rmu|w: the CRT is dead
09:29 AM gregcnc: will table stand up to much milling? i've read the older brother are not built for it
09:30 AM rmu|w: I'm only going to use is for light work in aluminium
09:30 AM rmu|w: mostly drilling ;)
09:31 AM rmu|w: somehow the previous owner managed to get coolant into the electical cabinet
09:31 AM rmu|w: bottom 2cm (1inch) was completely flooded
09:34 AM gregcnc: new servos and drives as well?
09:35 AM rmu|w: no i will try to go with what is in there
09:35 AM rmu|w: it powers up, enables, and the now-dead crt worked for about 2 minutes
09:35 AM rmu|w: servos seemed to work
09:36 AM rmu|w: i.e. under power you couldnt move the table whereas it moves easily when powered off
09:36 AM rmu|w: didn't try more
09:37 AM rmu|w: cleaned out a metric ton of chips packed into every corner under the way covers, no idea how they got there
09:37 AM Loetmichel: rmaw: what input is on that CRT?
09:39 AM Loetmichel: you could try usea cheap TFT TV that has all kinds of video inputs like composite/yc/scart and try to get it to run on the machine, they usually have well documented interfaces, and depending on age either EGA or composite or even just TTL monochrome
09:41 AM rmu|w: Loetmichel: i got a simple small TFT TV
09:41 AM rmu|w: 10" or so
09:41 AM rmu|w: simple BAS signal
09:41 AM rmu|w: seems to work
09:41 AM Loetmichel: yeah, thats what i meant
09:42 AM Loetmichel: those signal converters in these TVs are not vbery picky on signal quality
09:42 AM rmu|w: this machine has an interface for bubble memory cards!
09:44 AM rmu|w: dual-core 8086 with one 8087
09:46 AM Loetmichel: sounds like "rip it out, replace with an I5 and some mesa boards and linuxCNC"
09:50 AM unterhaus_: Loetmichael, what is the German word for engineer? The kind that graduated from university and does design work
09:51 AM rmu|w: Loetmichel: mesa board is on its way, next thing is figure out the pinouts. didn't find anything useable in the forum thread.
09:51 AM unterhaus_: which mesa board?
09:52 AM rmu|w: 7i97
09:52 AM unterhaus_: the way I remember it is you have should start with mesa docs
09:53 AM gregcnc: did you ask the guy?
09:53 AM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: Ingenieur and if its a M.sc its "Dipolm Ingenieur"
09:53 AM rmu|w: gregcnc: yes, 5min ago ;)
10:00 AM rmu|w: gregcnc: 3kW spindle servo, 400W X/Y, 700W Z is not nothing! max. cutting rate 5000mm/min / ~200ipm
10:01 AM unterhaus_: where is your thread on the forum?
10:01 AM rmu|w: this is the brother drill and tap thread https://forum.linuxcnc.org/30-cnc-machines/32276-brother-tc-225-tc-229-adventure
10:04 AM unterhaus_: so you are asking about the pinouts on the brother side? Might be tricky
10:04 AM rmu|w: why
10:05 AM rmu|w: it's just 20pin pinheaders
10:05 AM rmu|w: IDC connectors
10:06 AM rmu|w: servo control has A, A', B, B', C, C', analog voltage +-10V, some grounds and probably drive/axis enable and ok
10:06 AM unterhaus_: you have the pinout then?
10:07 AM rmu|w: tracing the quadrature stuff should be easy, there are 3 AM26LS32 that smell like decoding differential encoder signals
10:07 AM rmu|w: no, i don't have the pinout
10:07 AM rmu|w: the not-so-trivial stuff is error, enable, ok etc...
10:07 AM unterhaus_: uh huh
10:08 AM rmu|w: thos signals just go into an opto isolator
10:11 AM unterhaus_: I have some drives where all that is reassigned in software. Too many choices
10:13 AM rmu|w: the brother drives are '85 vintage or so
10:13 AM rmu|w: completely analog, with a bunch of opamps and LOTs of hybrids
10:16 AM unterhaus_: the op of that thread got pinouts from a brother distributor. Didn't say if it was electronic
10:38 AM gregcnc: rmu|w i mean the table mechanically was not designed for milling loads
10:40 AM rmu|w: gregcnc: the datasheet specifies 6.6cm³/min material removal when end milling S45C and 14cm³/min when face milling
10:40 AM rmu|w: so it should do ok milling 3mm aluminium extrusions
10:41 AM gregcnc: ok maybe not this particukar machine
10:41 AM Loetmichel: rmaw: be awrea taht extruded AL is a PITA to mill
10:41 AM rmu|w: this is not a lights out production 24/7 heavy milling thing ;)
10:41 AM Loetmichel: it clogs the mill bits in no time
10:41 AM Loetmichel: aware, that
10:42 AM rmu|w: Loetmichel: high speed, proper tools, rigid setup
10:42 AM gregcnc: I know what it is, but read this comment about them on practical machinist and it was supported by others, just don't remember which ancient borhter it was
10:43 AM Loetmichel: doesetn help with those "chewing gum alloys" that are used fpr extrusions
10:43 AM rmu|w: faster spindle would be nice
10:43 AM Loetmichel: tons of coolant and a REALLY sharp tool with polished swarf channels helps trhough
10:44 AM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: yet some build "milling" machines using wooden panels and beds
10:46 AM rmu|w: gregcnc: i read that too, but the machine was less than the mesa retrofit kit at auction, so it was basically a no brainer
10:46 AM rmu|w: and it seems pretty beefy for its size
10:46 AM gregcnc: depends if you have work waiting or can afford to put in the time
10:47 AM rmu|w: gregcnc: this is a hobby
10:47 AM gregcnc: ok
11:01 AM rmu|w: maybe i should take some oscilloscope traces of the signals of the original control
11:22 AM jymmmm: Almond is a pita to burn
11:22 AM jymmmm: Have to have the fire really hot to get started, LOTS of air needed. Clode the damper a few mm's and it smothers itself out.
11:22 AM jymmmm: close*
11:22 AM jymmmm: SMH
11:23 AM unterhaus_: but the thread about the Brother shows fairly stout looking linear bearings
11:24 AM unterhaus_: I know Haas isn't a paragon of excellence in machining, but they use linear bearings and their machines work okay
11:29 AM rmu|w: unterhaus_: what other kind of bearing would you use nowadays?
11:30 AM rmu|w: air bearings?
11:31 AM jymmmm: silly putty bearings
11:32 AM rmu|w: magnetostatic
11:33 AM gregcnc: box ways
11:33 AM Loetmichel: magentostatic isnt good for high forces
11:33 AM Loetmichel: air bearings dito
11:34 AM rmu|w: Loetmichel: so back to good old eletrostatic forces ;)
11:35 AM Loetmichel: <- is a fan of hydrostatic linear bearings
11:35 AM Loetmichel: just have a spare hydraulic pump at hand
11:35 AM rmu|w: thats also kind of air bearing, with different viscosity
11:37 AM Loetmichel: yeah, thats the point
11:38 AM Loetmichel: hydrostatic bearings can take much higher forces before it loses lubrication and /or moves out of position
11:45 AM Rab: Keyseat cutter in steel on a manual mill: climb, or conventional?
11:47 AM Rab: Just remembered there's .015 of backlash...conventional it is.
11:53 AM jym: Rab: Better than .15 backlash
11:53 AM jym: WB Tom_L
12:05 PM unterhaus_: hydrostatic work well. Except for the metering valves on ours kept gooping up
12:24 PM Loetmichel: *meh* pinky is still puckering. Dropping that steel block this morning on it was worse than expected. that nail will be black by tomorrow i would guess :-(
12:41 PM Tom_L: Loetmichel, you sure seem to like beating yourself up
12:44 PM * JT-Shop needs to figure out how to use his 15GB mobile hot spot...
12:44 PM Tom_L: just turn sharing on in the settings
12:45 PM Tom_L: you out of bandwidth already?
12:46 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: just a bit clumsy sometimes
01:07 PM jdh: what is a " 1 1/2 degree positive helix angle" on a boring bar?
01:20 PM gregcnc: JDH sounds like a helical relief
01:24 PM gregcnc: only common in small solid carbide boring bars
01:34 PM jym: JT-Shop: Goto settings, network and internet, tethering
01:35 PM jym: JT-Shop: ...then mobile hotspot,
01:36 PM jym: JT-Shop: Enable, select a SSID (name) you want to use, set a pasword
01:37 PM jym: JT-Shop: If this is android that is.
01:37 PM jym: JT-Shop: then it's just another wifi AP at this point.
01:39 PM jym: I really want this knife for some reason.... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011US7KWQ/
01:52 PM CaptHindsight: gas was only $1.49/gal yesterday
01:53 PM unterhaus_: maybe that's why all the idiots are out driving around
01:54 PM unterhaus_: they are going to turn Central Pennsylvania into a hotspot despite all the advantages we have
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: pretty quiet around here during rush hour
02:50 PM skunkworks: jym: if the cell provider allows tethering..
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: VPN
02:51 PM XXCoder: welps. offically over half million people now
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: more if you test
02:53 PM XXCoder: im talking about offical records only
02:53 PM XXCoder: though finally usa have some healed cases, at 621 now
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: yes I understood your boundary
02:54 PM SpeedEvil: In a rational world, 100% of those cured on minimum wage before would now be being offered lucrative employment
02:55 PM Loetmichel: SpeedEvil: cured doesnt mean "no more infectious" though ;)
02:55 PM XXCoder: whats sad is that theres corona denial people
02:55 PM XXCoder: one priest bragged that over 1000 people attened his church
02:55 PM SpeedEvil: I am assuming the cured is 'two negative PCR tests'
02:55 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: did you expect differenty in the homeland of flatearthers?
02:56 PM SpeedEvil: rather than 'he diddn't die'
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: well antibody tests cost money
02:56 PM XXCoder: loet not really but its not just dumb people. it includes some smart people
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: cured vs recovered
02:58 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: good point
03:43 PM pcw_home: USA has most reported cases of any country now
03:46 PM XXCoder: site i use it doesnt show that yet, but soon
03:46 PM XXCoder: 500 below italy
03:46 PM gregcnc: trivial
03:47 PM Loetmichel: pcw_home: thats what happens if the boss says "i will end that pandemic per order de mufti"
03:48 PM Loetmichel: instead of trying to get it under control by not sending the people into work while close to death
03:48 PM pcw_home: Lack of leadership, inability/refusal to learn from China/S Korea
03:49 PM XXCoder: but dont worry, usa will reopen in april 15th!
03:49 PM gregcnc: people here are free man, just do it, civil liberties,
03:49 PM Tom_L: what country has more tests available?
03:50 PM Tom_L: that would affect the count
03:52 PM pcw_home: Not sure but S Korea had massive fast testing relative to their population and got it under control in < 1 month
03:52 PM Tom_L: i was rather impressed by that
03:53 PM pcw_home: I don't think the virus is as responsive to PR as our leaders seem to think
03:53 PM gregcnc: phone based tracking, police checking up on quarantine, and probably people willing to actually do so
03:54 PM Tom_L: somebody must be staying home... the interweb is lagging
03:54 PM pcw_home: Koreas log(total cases) should be a lesson to all
03:55 PM gregcnc: early failed test kits hosed it here
03:58 PM CaptHindsight: we're # 1
03:58 PM CaptHindsight: based on high score
03:59 PM pcw_home: tests were available, the failure was lack of leadership
04:01 PM pcw_home: I guess the "deconstruction of the administrative state" was not such a good idea in the face of a pandemic
04:11 PM gregcnc: anyone have a reference for knurling?
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: those metal bumps or the sport?
04:13 PM Tom_L: double or single roll?
04:13 PM gregcnc: all knurling, sing double triple, cut, form, etc.
04:14 PM Tom_L: i've done both and roll threads in the past but it's been quite a while
04:14 PM CaptHindsight: https://smithy.com/machining-handbook/chapter-3/page/25
04:14 PM Tom_L: https://www.engineersedge.com/manufacturing_spec/knurl_chart.htm
04:15 PM gregcnc: i mean like the end all guide. there is stuff all over the net
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: The Knurlers Bible
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: huh
04:16 PM gregcnc: https://accu-trak.com/technical-info/ this is pretty good
04:16 PM gregcnc: i doubt there is much better
04:16 PM gregcnc: but maybe
04:17 PM Tom_L: https://www.doriantool.com/wp-content/uploads/SEC-H-Knurling-Tools_LowRes.pdf
04:17 PM Tom_L: mostly just tools
04:18 PM Tom_L: i think double rollers make a nicer knurl
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.asme.org/codes-standards/find-codes-standards/b94-6-knurling $33
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: outside of machinerys handbook and some DOD guides i don't see anything specific
04:23 PM Tom_L: i place it into one of those 'experience knows' categories
04:24 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.nzdl.org/gsdlmod?e=d-00000-00---off-0cdl--00-0----0-10-0---0---0direct-10---4-------0-0l--11-en-50---20-about---00-0-1-00-0--4----0-0-11-10-0utfZz-8-10&cl=CL2.11&d=HASH0127b25cd788ce7c6df7a965.3&gt=1
04:24 PM Tom_L: push too quick and it will track wrong, push too hard and it will flake off
04:27 PM gregcnc: yeah, though that Dorian catalog looks pretty good
04:27 PM Loetmichel: i like hashed knurls. those need two rollers anyway, or am i mistaken?
04:28 PM Tom_L: Loetmichel, diamond?
04:28 PM Loetmichel: hashed= the "diamond" pattern
04:28 PM Tom_L: you can do it with one but it's prettier with two
04:28 PM Tom_L: 2 opposite diagonal knurls
04:29 PM Tom_L: gives a different looking knurl
04:29 PM Tom_L: single pushes the bumps in, 2 raises the bumps
04:29 PM Loetmichel: yes, that was what i meant: two to diagonal knurl wheels in oposite directions
04:29 PM Tom_L: just depends the look you're after
04:31 PM Tom_L: not a knurl, but i did these with a tap: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/reprap/drive5.jpg
04:32 PM Loetmichel: 3dprinter drives?
04:32 PM Tom_L: yeah but i never used them
04:32 PM Tom_L: more a 'see if i can' thing
04:32 PM Tom_L: 2 or 3mm tap iirc
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: now to cut a matching curved threaded rod
04:34 PM Tom_L: actually a straight rod should rest ok on that
04:34 PM Tom_L: not much surface contact
04:34 PM CaptHindsight: like a rack and pinion
04:34 PM Tom_L: yeah
04:35 PM Tom_L: a trick i used was to make the part OD a multiple of the pitch
04:37 PM Tom_L: which could also play into knurl selection
04:54 PM CaptHindsight: BC just banned the resale of food and medical supplies (for non official resellers)
04:59 PM Deejay: gn8
05:01 PM _unreal_: SWEET just finished installing/tuning my new upgrade for my bandsaw
05:01 PM _unreal_: just got a ball bearing blade guide adapter
05:01 PM _unreal_: ordered it off ebay
05:02 PM _unreal_: the MFG'er of my bandsaw does not sell the adapter any more discontinued.
05:06 PM Loetmichel: ball bearing blade guide? you have to buy that?
05:06 PM Loetmichel: thats just a few pieces of round and square steel welded together
05:06 PM Loetmichel: i would have made that myself
05:31 PM gregcnc: I was under the impression all Tesla had heat pumps? I guess I was wrong. https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a31944592/elon-musk-tesla-hvac-system/
05:33 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxKdVk3A4nI
05:34 PM gregcnc: wow medical supply email spam already
05:36 PM gregcnc: i really assumed they used the AC in both directions a long time ago
05:40 PM CaptHindsight: hah MASA hats "Sick Again"
05:58 PM Valen: gregcnc: I would have put money on a reverse cycle AC system in teslas, anything else will just chew battery and well you need to have AC anyway
05:59 PM Valen: Like perhaps a resistive backup in case it was negative a zillion degrees but still
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: Valen: how are things there?
06:02 PM Valen: Not too bad, I've never been busier setting everybody up for work from home though
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: quite a year
06:03 PM Valen: been rolling around on the floor in Dr's offices which while never my fave thing is now like super extra bad
06:03 PM Valen: https://imgur.com/gallery/uS0WUf9 and this was xmas
06:06 PM CaptHindsight: Valen: pics are gone :( https://www.cnczone.com/forums/uncategorised-metalworking-machines/118358-phenolic-basalt-head-hm45.html
06:07 PM Valen: yeah web host died I didn't have the file system backed up and never got around to recovering them from the wayback machine
06:07 PM CaptHindsight: i didn't check the wayback
06:10 PM CaptHindsight: hard to believe it's been 10 years
06:19 PM _unreal_: 10 years?
06:20 PM _unreal_: just got the charcoal grill going
06:20 PM Valen: have to be that (or more) since I did it lol
06:20 PM Tom_L: sure doesn't seem like it
06:20 PM Tom_L: still in use?
06:25 PM Valen: it's at my dads place, he's not using it much but he's said I can have it now
06:25 PM jthornton: pretty nice weather today, rode the mountain bike twice
06:25 PM Valen: He's been using the new one we made up for the mens shed a whole bunch though
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: rain until saturday here
06:28 PM _unreal_: hehe i have post's from the early 2000's on cnczone
06:28 PM jthornton: tomorrow 20% chance of T-storms then 80% on Saturday
06:28 PM jthornton: I am tired of the rain
06:28 PM CaptHindsight: looks like sun all next week here
06:29 PM jthornton: nice
06:29 PM _unreal_: south florida we have had nothing but sun last 2 weeks
06:30 PM _unreal_: like ZERO rain
06:30 PM _unreal_: I had to run the sprinklers
06:30 PM jthornton: send me some sun
06:30 PM _unreal_: Thats what I dont miss about Maine
06:30 PM _unreal_: could have 5 days to two months of rain strait easy
06:30 PM _unreal_: DONT miss it
06:31 PM _unreal_: florida gets endless rain now and then but never lasts more then two weeks
06:31 PM _unreal_: I did have to deal with 80's outside though today
06:31 PM _unreal_: damn damn Damn >:) endless summer
06:32 PM _unreal_: I can hear a plain doing stunts over the everglades
06:32 PM _unreal_: if I go outside I could prob hear him to
06:33 PM _unreal_: doing endless loops
06:33 PM _unreal_: and other stunds
06:33 PM _unreal_: sunts
06:33 PM _unreal_: stunts
06:37 PM Tom_L: jthornton, we're probably gettin those storms tonight
06:37 PM JavaBean: jthornton, send me some rain... i can send you some winds and lots of daystar light
