01:58 AM veegee: Second VFD I blew this week. Damn these Huanyang VFDs are shit
02:04 AM veegee: 7.5kW VFD hooked up to a 7.5kW motor
02:04 AM veegee: Looks like they need to be heavily derated
02:58 AM XXCoder: veegee: http://www.nanobeam.us/ lol
02:58 AM XXCoder: i just found some of mine
02:59 AM XXCoder: forgot completely about it
03:00 AM XXCoder: veegee: also, cant you rebuild those vfd
03:00 AM XXCoder: with better parts
03:15 AM Deejay: moin
05:46 AM jthornton: morning
05:47 AM XXCoder: hey jt
05:47 AM XXCoder: i found small batch of nanobeams lol
05:47 AM XXCoder: its this super small extrusion beams lol
05:47 AM XXCoder: dunno what to do with it
05:49 AM jthornton: I managed to empty out my short material rack yesterday now to move it to the machine shop and organize it
05:49 AM jthornton: it's amazing the crap you find when cleaning
05:49 AM XXCoder: indeed
05:49 AM XXCoder: I bet if I cleaned uop tools at home I would find 20 screwdrivers
05:49 AM p0g0: it is? I should try that.
05:49 AM XXCoder: p0 you should. free stuff!
05:51 AM p0g0: Actually, I am sending lots of iron to recycle, giving away old tools that I don't use, etc- I don't want to find more stuff.
05:51 AM jthornton: same here, I have a ton of steel to take to McCoys if the rain ever stops
05:52 AM XXCoder: oh jt I finally worked on my 3d printer just a little
05:52 AM XXCoder: its y axis is fixed now
05:52 AM XXCoder: but no room to do more. i barely have room for tiny laser engraver, let alone 3d printer!
05:53 AM jthornton: if you had the cube you could stack them up
05:53 AM XXCoder: im kinda pondering on converting my failed case for cnc 2020 frame into hypercube
05:55 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: now you can get a 3d printer for about 4 toilet rolls
05:55 AM XXCoder: lol
05:55 AM miss0r2: haha
05:55 AM XXCoder: we have whole box!
05:55 AM XXCoder: so rich!
05:56 AM XXCoder: my bidet will evenually arrive so will use so much less tp also
05:56 AM miss0r2: We went to visit some friends the other night. and instead of the obligatory bottle of wine I brought a roll of toilet paper with a ribon on it :D
05:56 AM XXCoder: lol
05:56 AM miss0r2: that was a good laugh :)
05:57 AM miss0r2: A former coworker of mine texted me and asked if he could trade in two kids for a can of beans :D
05:57 AM miss0r2: (kids with runny noses, mind you.) so I declined :)
05:57 AM XXCoder: i bought 2 cans of pineapple peices for my mom, shes unhappy about brand of it lol
05:57 AM miss0r2: hehe
05:57 AM XXCoder: was bit hard to find those
05:58 AM miss0r2: some people you just can't please
05:58 AM XXCoder: my mom is usually just fine but sometimes shes super picky
05:58 AM XXCoder: and she cant go anywhere
05:59 AM miss0r2: we are not realy short of anything. I made a corona cure this morning: https://imgur.com/a/9ewEzMI
06:00 AM miss0r2: the pancakes has corona beer in'em :D
06:00 AM jthornton: no toilet paper here at all
06:00 AM miss0r2: me asking the kids if they want any of this niceness instead of their oatmeal.. They both decline until they see it and eat all my food, leaving me with oatmeal :D
06:01 AM miss0r2: jthornton: People grapped it all?
06:01 AM jthornton: yea
06:01 AM miss0r2: *sigh*
06:01 AM miss0r2: people around here are starting to calm down, luckily. So you can get it again
06:01 AM XXCoder: my bro ordered it online. this house cant use 2 ply
06:02 AM XXCoder: so it was impossible to buy, because 2 ply is far more common and so theres some left over
06:02 AM miss0r2: XXCoder: Silk by the square meter and cut it into sheets. That is heaven? :D
06:02 AM XXCoder: money
06:02 AM * miss0r2 better get back to cleaning out the shed.
06:02 AM jthornton: MSC catalog 4,500 pages lol
06:02 AM XXCoder: lol
06:03 AM XXCoder: glossy paper no good
06:03 AM miss0r2: 2400grit will also work just fine
06:03 AM miss0r2: not unlike the toilet paper we had when I went to school. It doubled as toilet paper and sandpaper for woodworking class
06:05 AM jthornton: that's pretty bad
06:27 AM XXCoder: tried to find the nuts and screws kit
06:27 AM XXCoder: failed
06:27 AM XXCoder: (for nanobeam)
06:28 AM jthornton: what size is the slot
06:28 AM XXCoder: a second
06:29 AM XXCoder: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:509373
06:29 AM XXCoder: mm units
06:31 AM pink_vampire: OD 5X5mm depth of groove 1/16"
06:34 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: ^
06:35 AM XXCoder: yeah
06:35 AM XXCoder: im now making it in freecad
06:36 AM pink_vampire: just take 80/20 and scale it down
06:36 AM Tom_L: morning
06:36 AM pink_vampire: hi Tom_L
06:36 AM XXCoder: nah im doing it for fun
06:36 AM pink_vampire: cool
06:37 AM jthornton: http://www.nanobeam.us/nb0505/m3-standoffs-and-screws
06:38 AM XXCoder: yeah so cheap but im still not sure what to use em for so not buying yet lol
06:38 AM pink_vampire: http://www.nanobeam.us/nb0505/nanobeam-builder-kit-9hels
06:39 AM XXCoder: theres larger kits too
06:41 AM pink_vampire: if someone here read the irc log in the future, and he or she wants to get me a christmas present here is an idea ^
06:42 AM XXCoder: :)
06:44 AM pink_vampire: now we need to find THK nano rails and nano ball screws
06:45 AM pink_vampire: I need to call them and ask just for the fun of it, anyway everyone now days work from home.
06:52 AM pink_vampire: the smallest I can find is HIWIN MGN5C
06:57 AM Tom_L: the fallout from this is becoming worse than Y2K
07:06 AM XXCoder: coronavirus?
07:33 AM gregcnc: fallout hasn't even started
07:40 AM p0g0: hmm, it has, I think- but I agree that the knock on impacts on the world's economy is just getting rolling.
07:41 AM p0g0: Honestly, the fact that x # of people are dead is of little impact on a global scale, but the lemming emulation is already Big Trouble.
07:43 AM gregcnc: if st patricks continues like nothing, there is no fallout, yet
07:46 AM rmu|w: people don't have intuition for exponentials
07:46 AM rmu|w: here in austria, we currently have doubling of cases every 2 days
07:46 AM rmu|w: that is, cases with symptoms an positive test
07:48 AM p0g0: Well, the US, being captured by the pharmacutical companies, doesn't have many test kits, so our reported #s are small. I guess once Big Pharma gets a patent on a test, we'll start to see those roll out for those with $.
07:48 AM rmu|w: 800 cases today and incubation period of 8 days means currently there are at least 10000 people infected that will develop symptoms
07:49 AM rmu|w: in one week it would be around 100000 and another week a million
07:49 AM gregcnc: we have a week I think
07:49 AM gregcnc: then reality will set in
07:49 AM p0g0: yeah, I think a week is about right here too.
07:50 AM gregcnc: WA state and NY are leading the curve so
07:50 AM rmu|w: 100000 cases with 1% severe would be manageable in austria, barely. a million not.
07:51 AM p0g0: the 1% is a lowball #
07:51 AM rmu|w: i know
08:02 AM Loetmichel: harhar. nothing like a decend cold to shed weight. just stepped on the scale: 4kg less than last week ;)
08:03 AM p0g0: Loetmichel, I have food allergies- those are even more effective.
08:04 AM gregcnc: intermittent fasting is effective
08:04 AM p0g0: All kinds of things work, fasting, exercise, diet, disease...
08:05 AM Loetmichel: especially if its "just no apetite because everything hurts" rather than "diet" or "have to NOT eat!"
08:05 AM rmu|w: high altitude extreme distance hiking is quite effective too
08:05 AM p0g0: well, when foods are poison, it gets easy to not eat them...
08:06 AM rmu|w: p0g0: allergy could be treated
08:06 AM p0g0: rmu|w, I weigh about 1 kg more than when I was 16, living at 7500' in Colorado and had cross country skied about 1000 miles that winter.
08:07 AM p0g0: no rmu|w in fact these cannot.
08:07 AM rmu|w: p0g0: so you probably are on the skinny side of americans
08:07 AM p0g0: It's like a vaccine, only time impacts that, barring dangerous afforts to retrain all my T cells
08:07 AM p0g0: yep
08:08 AM rmu|w: 1000 miles is quite a distance
08:08 AM p0g0: It's been more that 20 years too, so things are not so dire.
08:08 AM p0g0: I did 2000 miles in two winters.
08:08 AM p0g0: I really like x-skiing.
08:09 AM rmu|w: 7500 is what? 2300m?
08:09 AM rmu|w: also quite high
08:09 AM p0g0: Carbondale, Colorado is a marvelous place for skiing.
08:10 AM rmu|w: even in austria we don't have permanent settlements at that height
08:10 AM p0g0: Yeah, there are a bunch of 14,000 ' peaks nearby too, in the Maroon Bells and Sneffles.
08:11 AM rmu|w: carbondale is at 7500?
08:11 AM p0g0: Roughly, yeah
08:11 AM p0g0: Mt. Sopris is >12,000 and it's just below that.
08:12 AM rmu|w: we have glaciers in austria that reach down to about that height ;)
08:12 AM rmu|w: or used to 100 years ago
08:12 AM p0g0: Marble and Paonia are just up the road, Aspen is about 20 miles off.
08:13 AM rmu|w: looking at google maps, i think i would like it there
08:14 AM p0g0: I learned to backpack in the little mountains of California, the Trinity Alps. They are dinky, about 3,000' but in the 1960's they had glaciers. I got to play in them before they went away.
08:14 AM p0g0: Those are west of Mt. Shasta.
08:15 AM p0g0: Carbondale has a nearby ski area, Sunlight, in Glenwood Springs- a 1$ lift ticket got you a 5 hour back country x-ski run back to Carbondale. That was addictive.
08:16 AM rmu|w: so much to explore, so little time in a lifetime...
08:18 AM p0g0: Yes, for those who like the outdoors, there's some awesome things to see. I have done a lot of whitewater kayaking too- there are some wonderful rivers in the US.
08:24 AM rmu|w: while browsing google maps i stumbled upon grand junction regional airport. what happend there
08:24 AM rmu|w: looks like surroundings were bombarded
08:29 AM p0g0: Grand Junction is an old mining area, but it's also at the head waters of a bunch of amazing places- The Land of Standing Rocks, Canyonlands National Park (Chesler Park, an amazing thing). I'll gander at the maps to see if it looks any different.
08:31 AM rmu|w: that's what i mean https://www.google.com/maps/place/Carbondale,+Colorado+81623,+USA/@39.1269136,-108.5436336,141m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8741ab97250b21d7:0x77d06179f7934acf!8m2!3d39.4022054!4d-107.2111628
08:31 AM p0g0: Hmm, it looks about as ever- that's just eht western slope high desert.
08:32 AM rmu|w: looks a bit like the craters on the moon ;-)
08:35 AM p0g0: yeah, I'm looking at Chesler Park (Utah, in the Canyonlands)- you can only tell by the shadows that you are seeing 300m walls of rock, maybe 40m wide, forming a ring around about 5 Ha.
08:36 AM p0g0: Yeah, the Land of Standing Rocks is not very impressive from 25 miles up, seeing it from ground level is very different.
08:38 AM p0g0: Ditto for the Yampa River, that is simply one of the most amazing river runs on earth, but from a satellite view, eh.
08:38 AM p0g0: The shadows are a hint tho.
08:39 AM rmu|w: maybe i really have to go hiking on the other side of the big pond... looks amazing
08:39 AM p0g0: It is a permitted river, and we overstayed our permit... running Whirlpool Canyon at midnight to dodge the rangers.
08:41 AM p0g0: The river there channels up to about 20-40m wide, maybe 20-30m deep with sheer walls, so spontaneous vortices form, sucking your boat under briefly, then spitting you out after a big swirly.
08:42 AM rmu|w: dangerous
08:42 AM p0g0: nah, Big Fun.
08:43 AM rmu|w: i did some kayaking, but i'm no expert.
08:43 AM rmu|w: but i learned that you shouldn't fight the water
08:43 AM p0g0: It doesn't hold you under, just the boat.
08:43 AM p0g0: Well, you need a combat roll for sure.
08:44 AM p0g0: If you can't stay in the boat, you shouldn't try those rivers.
08:44 AM rmu|w: i always ended up exiting the boat ;)
08:44 AM rmu|w: 13 times on one day, was quite exhausting
08:45 AM p0g0: My high school French teacher was 5x world champion whitewater kayaker... he was nuts, but it was really something to see him in a boat.
08:45 AM rmu|w: really should learn to "kayak roll" (eskimorolle in german)
08:45 AM p0g0: He would _wire_ himself into the boat- so it was roll or drown.
08:47 AM rmu|w: one guy in school lost his parents, drowned in the Enns river while kayaking
08:49 AM p0g0: yes, it can be fatal. Hypothermia, strainers, river wide low dams, bad equipment can all get you.
08:50 AM p0g0: If you don't know how to roll, what to wear, what a keeper looks like, you'll get in trouble.
08:51 AM rmu|w: i manage to roll in quiet water (think a lake), when prepared... didn't really have much time to further improve or do any kayaking at all
08:52 AM p0g0: Heh, I rafted the Royal Gorge on the Arkansas River (eastern slope of Colorado), a class 4 river (likely dangerous, could kill you) and that was beyond thrilling. Half the raft crew got so terrified that we had to take out of the river and have a long talk about which was our right hand vs our left- getting that wrong was proving to be real trouble.
08:52 AM rmu|w: the guiding company that took us novices out into whitewater on our first trip was a bit nuts
08:53 AM p0g0: Rolling in moving water (the combat roll) is different than flat water.
08:53 AM rmu|w: hehe
08:53 AM rmu|w: yeah, i noticed that. turn upside down, never managed to get back up, always had to eject
08:54 AM rmu|w: even on places where you really shouldnt.
08:54 AM rmu|w: in
08:54 AM p0g0: The guy that conned me into that Royal Gorge trip admitted about half way down the river that the one time he'd made that run before, they broke 5 out of 6 paddles, got clamshelled under water (pinched in a folded raft), and only survived because the boat shifted a bit.
08:55 AM rmu|w: ugh
08:55 AM p0g0: Well, shallow water in a kayak is the worst- your face grinds on the river bottom.
08:56 AM rmu|w: it usually wasnt shallow there, but you had random close encounters with big rocks just sittin there underwater, hitting those without helmet wouldn't be good
08:56 AM p0g0: When we put on the run, a set of professional river guides were just ahead of us- they came over and gave us a seriously scary rap about what we were getting into. It got scarier when I saw them strapping up all the prosthetics (back braces etc) that they needed because of all their prior river injuries.
08:57 AM p0g0: Never boat without a helmet and flotation.
08:57 AM p0g0: It's a simple rule.
08:57 AM rmu|w: i for sure won't
08:57 AM rmu|w: and never did
08:58 AM rmu|w: i'm not that stupid ;)
08:58 AM Loetmichel: and they say "water has no hard places"...
08:58 AM Loetmichel: :-)
08:58 AM p0g0: The Royal Gorge has standing holes in the river you could toss a school bus into- you get a boat into one of those, and you were never coming out alive.
08:58 AM Loetmichel: i beg to differ ;)
08:59 AM p0g0: I get injured on the local river here, the Red, just by being punched in the chest by a wave.
08:59 AM p0g0: *got
08:59 AM p0g0: It was a big wave tho.
09:00 AM p0g0: That's the only time I've been hurt boating though, so way less dangerous than horses and other common sports.
09:40 AM Loetmichel: p0g0: i once was on a water ski "cable pull" sea.
09:41 AM Loetmichel: lost control on a corner at a 70kph round.
09:42 AM p0g0: oww
09:42 AM Loetmichel: did like a flat stone does, bounced off the water surface about 5 times before being slow enough to sink in and decelerate completely. about 5 feet from the gravel "shore"
09:42 AM p0g0: ohh, that was good.
09:42 AM Loetmichel: i was black and blue all over the body that evening
09:42 AM Loetmichel: and i WAS wearing a full neoprene diving suit ;)
09:43 AM Loetmichel: water gets surprisingly hard at high speeds ;)
09:44 AM SpeedEvil: I blame the naiads.
09:46 AM p0g0: Decades back, I climbed "middle sister" (the Three Sisters Range in Oregon)- we descended that peak by falling on our stomachs and body surfing down the glacier/snowfield. Nuts for sure, but hitting such speeds with yuor face about 4" above the snowpack was something. There were boulders to dodge too. Looking at a recent google map, that snowfield looks to be gone.
09:47 AM Loetmichel: i think i looked hillarious bouncing off the water
09:47 AM p0g0: The bottom of that range was all obsidian. The stuff shreded boots.
09:47 AM Loetmichel: friends told me it looked like a ragdoll
09:47 AM p0g0: You are lucky to not have broken something...
09:47 AM p0g0: At that speed water is about like concrete.
09:47 AM Loetmichel: nah, i dont tend to break things
09:48 AM Loetmichel: but as i said: pretty much blue and green all over
09:48 AM p0g0: Yeah, just numerous small cuts...
09:49 AM Loetmichel: wasnt that apparent in the moment though. gathered my stuff togehter (skis and the life vest i somehow managed to lose while bouncing)
09:49 AM Loetmichel: and went back to the start to do a few rounds more
09:49 AM Loetmichel: it wasnt until the evening when i peeled myself out of the wetsuit that i noticed the bruises ;)
09:51 AM Loetmichel: the problem with those cable driven waterskiing things is that they have 4 90° corners. its pretty easy to slip up and not turn into the corner at the right time and then do some unintentional stunts
09:52 AM Loetmichel: like jumping out of boots or said skipping off the water surface a few times while faceplanting ;)
09:53 AM Loetmichel: and if its a high speed round it tends to hurt a bit
09:53 AM Loetmichel: nothing serious though ;)
09:55 AM p0g0: I'll suggest that you avoid downhill skiing- if you ever try, make really sure that someone that knows what they are doing sets the boots and bindings well- I mention that because the most injuries I've ever seen in a sports was downhill & slalom skiiers. Compound spiral fractures- casts from the hip to the toes.
09:55 AM Loetmichel: the moment when i had my elbow in the triangle while forgetting to corner was harder. Imagine getting pulled 90° to your current vector by a steel cable at 35kph... ON ONE ARM. I nearly "jumped" up to the idler spool of the drive cable. ~10m above the water ;)
09:56 AM Loetmichel: i am not into snow sports at all... way to cold ;)
09:56 AM Loetmichel: so thats probably not happening ;)
09:57 AM p0g0: 'K, tho x-country is both safe and you tend to stay warm (but for the Really Nice Days at 10000' in 3' dry powder snow)
10:04 AM Loetmichel: but from having experienced both i can tell you that its actually LESS painful to impact a freshly fallen mound of snow at 50kph with a scooter than impacting a pond at the same speed
10:04 AM Loetmichel: feels more like impacting a big airbag than a concrete surface
10:05 AM Loetmichel: <- drove 42km two times to work each day on a 50cc scooter for 3 years
10:05 AM Loetmichel: summer and winter ;)
10:05 AM Loetmichel: you get used to "slight mishaps" ;)
10:30 AM jymmmm: good morning
11:04 AM net|: https://hackaday.com/2020/03/14/manual-to-hydraulic-press-with-a-paint-sprayer/
11:19 AM _unreal_: There done finished rebuilding the new board
11:19 AM _unreal_: last thing I wanted to do but at least its now finished
11:19 AM _unreal_: I should now have 3 working boards again
11:20 AM _unreal_: now for breakfast at 12:20 :)
11:20 AM _unreal_: I'm looking at starting to put together my PSU next
11:20 AM _unreal_: I need to cut up and build the box to house it but I'll work on that later
12:03 PM Javabean: https://twitter.com/jsblokland/status/1239217340346236929
01:22 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200315_114549.jpg
01:22 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20200315_114621.jpg
01:30 PM ve7it: skunkworks, nice job!
01:31 PM Rab: skunkworks, neat. What material is that?
01:31 PM Rab: And what tooling was used?
01:48 PM _unreal_: Ya thats worth a cookie :)
01:49 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I'm starting to work on putting the PSU together with the transformer
01:49 PM _unreal_: soldering my boards etc....
01:51 PM ve7it: _unreal_, heard about your exploding pcb... that is very unusual... any of the boards talking serial yet?
01:52 PM jymmmm: hi ve7it
01:52 PM ve7it: hey jymmmm
01:52 PM jymmmm: ve7it: did you ever get that drone?
01:54 PM ve7it: a good time to be hiding in the shop.... no on the drone... one of these days! saw a neat application for drones... carrying a ground penetrating radar and doing automatic search patterns
01:54 PM jymmmm: ve7it: or even IR camera to search for warm bodies
01:55 PM ve7it: pretty much need an octo copter to carry that much weight... yea... play where is the moose?
01:56 PM jymmmm: ve7it: The Flir cameras are realyl tiny, even fit on a phone
01:57 PM ve7it: that would be fun, but the hunting regs here dont even allow a drone in your camp... big no-no
01:57 PM jymmmm: ve7it: I'm thinkng search and rescue, not hunting
01:57 PM ve7it: could be the same thing!
01:58 PM jymmmm: lol
01:59 PM ve7it: I think a hybrid drone with a weed whacker engine charging the batteries would be good... would be nice to have an hour or more of flight time for grid searches
01:59 PM ve7it: the regulations take all the fun out of drones
01:59 PM Javabean: needs bs "licensing" here in the us
02:01 PM ve7it: Javabean, pretty much the same regs here in Canuckistan
02:01 PM JT-Shop: the police here use drones for hunting criminals on the run
02:02 PM Javabean: no surprise, just because canuckia is awesome doesn't mean it hasn't been infected by the BS the us gov shovels out
02:02 PM ve7it: JT-Shop, I wonder how many have been shot down? a good goose load should do the trick!
02:03 PM ve7it: I am waiting to repurpose an Amazon drone for something more fun
02:03 PM Javabean: i understand its "illegal" to shoot drones down here
02:06 PM ve7it: If you are the bad guy.. the rules are much more simple... I dont know why the "law" gets so convoluted and rarely enforced... it would be nice if everyone just "behaved"
02:06 PM * Javabean starts ROTFLMAO.... before starting to cry
02:07 PM JT-Shop: it would be sorta hard to shoot down they use it at night with and infrared camera
02:08 PM Rab: JT-Shop, no marker lights? I thought those were required by law.
02:08 PM Javabean: you can't see the stupid ir lights that those fsck'rs use?? dude, they stand out quite a bit
02:10 PM ve7it: a whole new breed of hunter killer drones.... looking for hot spots in the sky.. both thermal and rf wise
02:10 PM Javabean: nah, all you need is a 12-gauge with bird shot
02:18 PM JT-Shop: they are super quiet and I think the light was on top hidden from below
02:38 PM _unreal_: ve7it, hi sorry I was soldering
02:38 PM _unreal_: have not tried and I just finished rebuilding the replacement board transfering all the parts around 1
02:38 PM _unreal_: est
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: possibly good time to launch my kickstarter for a drone radar with surface air rocket kit
02:39 PM _unreal_: I just finished building my primary control board for the transformer
02:40 PM _unreal_: 25A capable bridge rec. and the triac driver chip so I can control the mains relay for the power supply for the motors
02:40 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: steam powered?
02:40 PM _unreal_: So at this point I can control the the transformer, I'm thinking I'm going to drive it with 220
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: howdy, yes or similar
02:41 PM _unreal_: there is a DEDICATED 220 line up where the machine is going to go and 30amp
02:41 PM * fragalot just finished preparing a 400V 115A line for a new machine
02:42 PM fragalot: 125A*
02:43 PM _unreal_: jymmmm, with my tooling I could design a large craft easy for ya :)
02:43 PM _unreal_: only 125A?
02:43 PM fragalot: _unreal_: yes, only 3phase too
02:44 PM _unreal_: ve7it, the only other major thing I need to do soldering wise I believe is making a serial adapter cable
02:45 PM _unreal_: ve7it, also before I power any of the boards I'm going to do one more ONCE over so I dont :S let the smoke out
02:45 PM ve7it: yup... all you need is 5v on the board to get the micro talking serial... that tests most of the low power parts
02:45 PM _unreal_: ve7it, question for you thought? can the boards be powered with out a motor/load or will they burn up instantly if they are not connected to a motor?
02:46 PM _unreal_: though not thought
02:46 PM _unreal_: seeing as how the current setup using the 7805
02:47 PM ve7it: no problem without motor.... the output stage is just an opamp and it should be stable... just dont connect the motor with the power on as the output will like be fully + or - and the spikes could take out the driver
02:47 PM _unreal_: ya..
02:48 PM fragalot: just connect it slowly to give it time to stabilize :-)
02:48 PM _unreal_: currently I have them setup with small aluminum pre heat sinks. that I took from a CAR amp
02:48 PM _unreal_: they had big outer heat sinks that they where bolted to
02:48 PM _unreal_: so I'm going to do the same thing just bolting to the BIG finned heat sink I have
02:48 PM _unreal_: That way I can mount/unmount them
02:48 PM ve7it: easiest might be to put a low current 12v supply on the +rail... this will regulate down to 5 with the 7805
02:49 PM _unreal_: with out disturbing the opamps
02:49 PM _unreal_: heh
02:51 PM _unreal_: ve7it, what I need is a switch button that could switch between one source and 4 outputs. so I could just wire the 3 currently boards serial interface. and just use the switch
02:56 PM * Javabean grumbles, just had a desire for poutine..... /me sighs

02:57 PM CaptHindsight: so we should have vision based alignment/homing going again soon
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: thanks TurBoss

04:13 PM XXCoder: hy andy
04:14 PM andypugh: Hi
04:14 PM andypugh: Do you read Chinese?
04:14 PM andypugh: (Or anyone else here>)
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: i can run Google translate with minimal problems :)
04:15 PM Jymmm: andypugh: download the google translate app, it can translate text, audio, and even a photo of kanji
04:15 PM andypugh: Someone has submitted some Chinese LinuxCNC docs. I have no reason to believe that they are anything else. But it feels like I should check
04:18 PM JT-Shop: I saw that but I'm not very good a PR's
04:18 PM Jymmm: A REAL candle, wifi controled https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/candletouch/candle-touch-the-first-smart-connected-real-flame-candle
04:20 PM andypugh: Possibly the most unnecessary invention ever?
04:20 PM XXCoder: i already figured a criminal use for that
04:20 PM p0g0: yeah, arson
04:20 PM XXCoder: remote bombing also
04:21 PM p0g0: It's a good thing we're nice and innocent, the machines are now sniffing our butts.
04:21 PM Jymmm: Wait till it gets hacked, and starts a fire when fido/Kitty knock it over
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: start a fire at home app
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: spark generator and lighter fluid
04:30 PM XXCoder: iFire

05:14 PM skunkworks: it is long and painful but kinda shows
05:18 PM skunkworks: (also bores a round hole the same way)
05:31 PM andypugh: Congratulations on finding an almost-practical use :-)
05:33 PM skunkworks: almost :)
05:34 PM skunkworks: I said earlier - it would be funny to post this on practical machinist.. Watch peoples heads explode
05:34 PM andypugh: “Impractical machinist” ?
05:34 PM skunkworks: I bet 40 pages on how linuxcnc isn't a real machine controller.
05:36 PM skunkworks: the hex looks suprisingly good when you have the cutter orientated right - plus the right diameter
05:37 PM andypugh: Without the polygon, but just circular interpolation, you could use the technique to make spherical holes for ball joints.
05:39 PM Rab_ is now known as Rab
05:41 PM BitEvil: I prefer 360-gon joints, for that neat 'snap to degree' effect.
05:43 PM syyl_: haha very cool skunkworks
05:58 PM skunkworks: andypugh: yes - you can do a lot of cool things.
06:01 PM skunkworks: can you use cutter comp in the xz plane when not in lathe mode?
06:01 PM skunkworks: asking for a friend.
06:01 PM skunkworks: ;)
06:01 PM Javabean: "<skunkworks> asking for a friend." something about that smells off
06:02 PM andypugh: I don’t actually know.
06:04 PM XXCoder: "friend"
06:04 PM XXCoder: ;)
06:13 PM skunkworks: that would allow cutter comp style moves to work so you don't have to do them in cad.
07:33 PM _unreal_: wish I knew where the terminal block I had are :(
07:33 PM _unreal_: only know where one jumbo one is
07:49 PM kanzure_ is now known as kanzure
08:04 PM CaptHindsight: they are closing all of our bars and restaurants statewide
08:05 PM Javabean: which state?
08:05 PM CaptHindsight: Illinois
08:05 PM gregcnc: OH too
08:06 PM CaptHindsight: heard Ohio for ceratin as well
08:06 PM Tom_L: similar here
08:06 PM CaptHindsight: NY is talking about it now
08:06 PM gregcnc: rate cut is worrisome
08:06 PM CaptHindsight: likely CA as well
08:07 PM CaptHindsight: not to panic, but the economy is going to suck for the next year at least
08:08 PM CaptHindsight: lots of people can't go a few weeks without any income and still pay bills, mortgage, rent etc
08:08 PM CaptHindsight: maybe just cover food for that long
08:08 PM * Javabean declares capthindsight as capt obvious
08:08 PM CaptHindsight: to you
08:09 PM CaptHindsight: but they aren't discussing what to do long term yet
08:09 PM CaptHindsight: like it was all just going to go away on its own
08:10 PM Javabean: probably going to raid the houses of people who have food that they stored... like mormons and such
08:11 PM gregcnc: there is no shortage of food here.
08:11 PM Tom_L: cupboards are pretty bare here
08:11 PM gregcnc: but how .gov will get it to the people is the hard part
08:11 PM Tom_L: the sam's here looked like an empty warehouse
08:11 PM gregcnc: it will be full in couple days
08:12 PM Javabean: maybe
08:12 PM Tom_L: not if the source is out
08:12 PM Tom_L: and are on 'home work' details
08:13 PM gregcnc: people are loadign up on cookie and coke, they have no idea how to get by on staples or even cook them is a bigger problem
08:14 PM Tom_L: just got back from a trip and went to get a few items to find most if not all in some cases of the staples to be gone
08:14 PM CaptHindsight: the poorer will just be worse off
08:16 PM CaptHindsight: there is still no leadership directing and informing people what to do
08:16 PM CaptHindsight: other than hunker down
08:16 PM gregcnc: unless you get the kardashians to do it who will listen?
08:17 PM CaptHindsight: rent is due in 2 weeks for many and the same for the owners of the buildings (mortgages)
08:17 PM CaptHindsight: more homeless and more banks holding on to vacant property
08:18 PM Javabean: hmm, de ja vu all over again
08:18 PM gregcnc: banks were already giving out home loans to anyone
08:18 PM CaptHindsight: same gotcha
08:19 PM CaptHindsight: but the masses are so clueless they still will vote for no change
08:20 PM CaptHindsight: and just get used to more homeless and poor
08:30 PM Javabean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsX7tEM6gFA
08:31 PM Javabean: the link above isn't doing something stupid like making "non-alcohol" or "10% alcohol"

08:34 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/15/investing/stock-futures-global/index.html
08:35 PM CaptHindsight: but how about paying the bills next month? How is that supposed to work?
08:38 PM t4nk_freenode: yeh, we're all as good as dead, let's keep focusing on that with all our might!
08:38 PM * t4nk_freenode prays as hard as he can
08:39 PM CaptHindsight: time for real leadership
08:40 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
08:40 PM t4nk_freenode: HELL YEA!
08:40 PM t4nk_freenode: if only some idiot with a big mouth would take power and save us from our freedom for good
08:41 PM CaptHindsight: from 1973 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV4N2dk0cMk

08:42 PM gregcnc: the coffee shop in town is offering 30% off....
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: $5 - 30% = $1.50 x 14 days = $21 woowhoo
08:43 PM t4nk_freenode: those are rather appealing new rules I say
08:45 PM CaptHindsight: ~$44/month savings
08:45 PM CaptHindsight: how long can they do that and survive?
08:45 PM * t4nk_freenode inspects CaptHindsight's underpants
08:45 PM CaptHindsight: hey watchit buddy
08:45 PM gregcnc: forever? it's way overpriced
08:46 PM CaptHindsight: but but but their nice storefront with seats
08:46 PM t4nk_freenode: I'm not your buddy, friend :|
08:46 PM CaptHindsight: and the owners savings account, think of the poor owners
08:46 PM CaptHindsight: and the hourly coffee bar staff
08:47 PM t4nk_freenode: what about the poor coffee farmers!?!?
08:48 PM gregcnc: 1USD/lb for coffee maybe double for fair trade. sell 20USD/lb if they make the coffee for you? 64/Lb
08:50 PM CaptHindsight: breakfast is another high margin area
08:50 PM CaptHindsight: maybe we'll see the collapse of the over priced coffee shop
08:50 PM t4nk_freenode: lol... it's the same thing for me.. coffee
08:51 PM CaptHindsight: market correction to stock prices
08:51 PM CaptHindsight: also home prices
08:51 PM gregcnc: I haven't gone to the local shop for a couple years even though it's excellent
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: gas $1.50/gal
08:52 PM gregcnc: I know two guys who lost jobs in the last couple weeks.
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: i splurge on my imported roast from Germany and Italy in whole bean form
08:53 PM gregcnc: Opportunities looked great when I talked to them a week ago, now I hope they find something
08:53 PM CaptHindsight: tought time for a job hunt
08:53 PM CaptHindsight: tough even
08:54 PM gregcnc: I like this one right now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UCL80G/
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: lately https://www.dallmayr.com/deen/coffee/ and https://www.lavazza.us/en_US.html
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: and some local roasters
08:59 PM * Javabean sighs. notes his body temp is reading 2.3 to 2.8F higher than it has been for the last 2 weeks... hopes its just a fluke caused by how hot it is in the house
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: higher than 95-96F or are you now ~101f?
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: now the ER docs are getting sick here
09:01 PM Javabean: not sure, the thermometer i have been using has pegged me at about 96.8 to 97.2, now reading 99.2 and 99.8
09:03 PM CaptHindsight: keep an eye on it
09:04 PM Javabean: i have been, it was 97 and 97.2 this morning
09:07 PM Rab: Body temp is typically cooler after waking up.
09:08 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html
09:08 PM Tom_L: t4nk_freenode, the coffee farmers will just go back to making more coke
09:09 PM t4nk_freenode: lol
09:09 PM CaptHindsight: legalize opiates
09:09 PM Tom_L: yeah just numb the pain away
09:11 PM Tom_L: they'll just wait til the national debt gets bad enough they need the additional tax then they will
09:11 PM gregcnc: dead people don't pay taxes
09:11 PM Tom_L: dead beats don't either
09:12 PM Javabean: yeah they do, all your stuff gets taxed or belongs to the gov when you die
09:12 PM CaptHindsight: time machine
09:12 PM gregcnc: the average person has no inheritance tax
09:12 PM Tom_L: dead beats don't have much to trace back to them to begin with. not much to loose anyway
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: dead beats like the banks in 2008
09:13 PM Javabean: and don't forget, if you get caught being a "dead beat" you get 3 hots and a cot for a while... you don't gotta do anything
09:13 PM Tom_L: :)
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: sorry we gambled and lost, Banks 2008
09:14 PM Javabean: can really be obvious that we don't live in a capitalist country... if you mess up the gov will bail you out
09:14 PM Tom_L: Javabean, i don't consider green bolonia 3 hots
09:15 PM Tom_L: they're gonna release all them anyway
09:16 PM Javabean: now, if they dropped "income taxes" for "every day people" and went with "consumption tax" they wouldn't have deadbeats to worry about...and tourists from abroad would be paying taxes too
09:17 PM Tom_L: https://www.savannahnow.com/news/20200311/chatham-county-jail-wonrsquot-hold-misdemeanor-criminals-if-coronavirus-comes-to-county
09:17 PM Tom_L: so anything goes now
09:19 PM Tom_L: so if you stab somebody, just make sure they live
09:28 PM ziper: CaptHindsight, I still don't really understand the relation between curing temperature and Tg
09:29 PM ziper: When in the curing process do you have to apply the heat in order to get the higher Tg?
09:30 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: for what material?
09:30 PM BitEvil: Curing never competes until you go over Tg (for epoxies, for exampe)
09:30 PM BitEvil: raising the temperature over that causes further curing.
09:30 PM ziper: say epoxy and glass (or carbon)
09:30 PM BitEvil: AIUI anyway.
09:31 PM CaptHindsight: Tg and curing temps are two different things
09:31 PM ziper: so if you leave the part out in the sun, even a year later, and it gets a little bit soft, the next time round the Tg will be a bit higher?
09:31 PM CaptHindsight: what type of epoxy? a 2 part or radcured?
09:32 PM ziper: this is for a gurit bonding product, but it was made me think of it https://puu.sh/Fl3Bv/271df44eee.png
09:32 PM ziper: 2 part
09:34 PM CaptHindsight: give me a minute
09:35 PM ziper: sure, thanks
09:35 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
09:36 PM ziper: I also don't understand how the cleavage can be spec'd with kilonewtons
09:37 PM XXCoder: $wa human mass to kilowatts
09:38 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: the epoxy in your example will have a different Tg based on how long it is cured over a certain temp ...
09:38 PM XXCoder: ooks like duck bot is dead
09:38 PM ziper: right, but does it depend on when that heat is applied?
09:38 PM CaptHindsight: since that is a factor of the chemistry of each part of the epoxy and the crosslinker
09:39 PM CaptHindsight: not 100% certain since i don't know exactly what they used but it is likely that you can cure at the 21C and then later cure at say 70C to raise the Tg
09:40 PM ziper: thanks
09:40 PM CaptHindsight: one crosslinker will work at low temp and crosslink to say 70%
09:40 PM ziper: presumably it is a good idea to ramp up post cure temperatures
09:40 PM CaptHindsight: then the same or another will trigger > 50C and further crosslink from 70% to say 90%
09:40 PM ziper: the part might slump if you took it up immediately to the final temperature, but if you take your time it might hold together for the whole thing
09:40 PM CaptHindsight: that is why it gets stiffer or harder
09:41 PM CaptHindsight: the more it crosslinks the harder it gets
09:42 PM Javabean: _abc_ https://imgur.com/gallery/YOtFZNk this is why corona avoided .ca then
09:44 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: yes, if that is how the epoxy behaves
09:45 PM CaptHindsight: low temp partial cure, then baked at 50C or 70C for final
09:45 PM CaptHindsight: based on desired hardness or Tg
09:45 PM CaptHindsight: and < say 10C it won't cure at all
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: or only 1-2%
09:46 PM SpeedEvil: Early on there were a number of composite small aircraft failures based on stuff getting >tg in hot sun parked, and doing bad post-cure things.
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: many crosslinkers are temp dependant
09:47 PM ziper: like becoming too brittle, or failing due to being past Tg?
09:47 PM CaptHindsight: they are unstable molecules
09:47 PM CaptHindsight: they trigger above a certain temp
09:47 PM SpeedEvil: warping IIRC
09:47 PM SpeedEvil: though being too stiff can also do it
09:50 PM CaptHindsight: why you have to know the characteristics of the polymers used
09:51 PM ziper: i'm reading about epoxy, urethane, and methacrylate adhesives now
09:52 PM CaptHindsight: most of my work lately is radcured versions of all the above and dual cure
09:53 PM CaptHindsight: radcure = UV and ebeam
09:53 PM SpeedEvil: Is rad-uncure a thing?
09:53 PM CaptHindsight: same thing
09:53 PM ziper: dual cure is what, 2 part with rad accleration?
09:53 PM CaptHindsight: you can make a previously UV cured part break down again by leaving it in the sun
09:54 PM SpeedEvil: hmm
09:54 PM CaptHindsight: it won't turn liquid but will become brittle and crack/flake apart
09:55 PM CaptHindsight: dual is two different type of bonds, say UV free radical and isocyanate
09:56 PM ziper: after reading this article, it seems like for an FRP bond epoxy would be the best for high strength and methacrylate only used for quick and dirty less important jobs
09:57 PM CaptHindsight: methacrylates cure slower than acrylates
09:57 PM CaptHindsight: just for reference
09:58 PM CaptHindsight: tensile strength only vs flex strength
09:59 PM CaptHindsight: fillers do lots of the work as well
09:59 PM CaptHindsight: JB weld for example
10:00 PM SpeedEvil: sizing is fun
10:00 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4xX7VecgzA
10:00 PM ziper: this product has a tensile strength of some 8500 psi, but a tensile adhesion of only 2000. is that typical?
10:01 PM CaptHindsight: Is Flex Glue better than JB Weld, Gorilla & Loctite? Let's find out!
10:02 PM CaptHindsight: it can be really strong and not be pulled apart but not bond that well to another surface
10:03 PM CaptHindsight: surface prep is very important
10:03 PM CaptHindsight: like painting, it's more about prep
10:05 PM CaptHindsight: something that you describe sounds like you'd want it to be mechanically bound as well
10:05 PM ziper: don't think that is really possible without damaging the part
10:06 PM CaptHindsight: have the adhesive wrap around the backside of the part or deep into the surface pores
10:06 PM CaptHindsight: for your application that might be true
10:06 PM ziper: here is an example https://forums.sailinganarchy.com/uploads/monthly_2017_09/IMG_1961.JPG.6b774eb8943e119d98db99be284bf4b0.JPG
10:06 PM CaptHindsight: but that is how that adhesive might be best used
10:06 PM ziper: the two tangs on the right
10:07 PM ziper: typical loads woult be 500 kg or so, double that maybe for a big shock
10:08 PM Javabean: only double?? i thought you were supposed to use quadruple in your enginmineering
10:08 PM CaptHindsight: in which direction/s?
10:09 PM ziper: 20 degrees or so from the long axis
10:09 PM ziper: so down, from the picture direction
10:09 PM CaptHindsight: is this adhesive applied after the cylinder is cured?
10:09 PM ziper: yes
10:10 PM CaptHindsight: best would be at the time when the epoxy is still not fully cured
10:10 PM CaptHindsight: so then sand, clean, apply, pray :)
10:12 PM ziper: it isn't typically an issue
10:12 PM ziper: just trying to uinderstand the bonding options
10:13 PM CaptHindsight: fully cured anything is more difficult than not or partially cured
10:14 PM ziper: right, that is why I think I might want a faster cure product
10:14 PM ziper: small area, easy to apply, higher Tg
10:14 PM CaptHindsight: you'll still need to test to be sure since you don't know or have control of what is already there
10:15 PM CaptHindsight: that you are bonding to
10:15 PM CaptHindsight: what is the diameter of the cylinder?
10:15 PM ziper: 40mm
10:16 PM ziper: going to do the best surface prep possible, of course
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: so the tangs are ~1cm wide?
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: and have maybe 1 x 2cm of contact area
10:17 PM ziper: more likt 2x4
10:17 PM ziper: cm
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: even better
10:18 PM CaptHindsight: 1000Kg
10:19 PM CaptHindsight: can you wrap it with more CF?
10:19 PM CaptHindsight: go all the way around?
10:20 PM CaptHindsight: that way the CF carries some load vs all just the adhesive
10:20 PM ziper: not really needed, the tang bonding has proven to be reliable, and the tangs are off the shelf parts. if I were doing it by hand, I would
10:20 PM CaptHindsight: ok if it's good enuf
10:21 PM ziper: thanks for your help
10:21 PM CaptHindsight: where do i send the bill? :p
10:22 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: is it a mast for sails?
10:22 PM ziper: yes
10:22 PM ziper: for a moth
10:23 PM CaptHindsight: the flying bugs?
10:23 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moth_(dinghy)
10:29 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: 50-60C is a realist temp that a black mast can reach in the sun
10:29 PM CaptHindsight: realistic/realist
10:30 PM CaptHindsight: 40C air temp plus direct sunlight
10:31 PM CaptHindsight: also straight epoxy doesn't handle UV well
10:31 PM CaptHindsight: so it could crack near the edges
10:32 PM CaptHindsight: Hindered amine light stabilizers, or HALS
10:33 PM CaptHindsight: absorbers: aryl esters, benzophenone, benzotriazoles, and formamidines
10:34 PM CaptHindsight: or pigments near/at the surface
10:37 PM Elmo40: anyone seen this cool vim plugin?
10:37 PM Elmo40: https://thoughtbot.com/blog/vim-you-complete-me
10:50 PM Tom_L: who uses vi anyway?
10:51 PM * skunkworks gets the popcorn...
