12:07 AM CaptHindsight: andypugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLZbjl1rR4Q what would make it spark when hit?
12:12 AM CaptHindsight: was thinking it was tin bismuth until i saw the sparks
12:18 AM CaptHindsight: http://extrapaik.com/
12:18 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FUj8Z1N3p0
01:50 AM Deejay: moin
03:29 AM Loetmichel: maan, i REALLY must go hulk soon... just destroyed another screwdriver bit. T20 this time, turned it over one thooth (so that its now a slight spiral instead of straight tooths)... and with a 3dprinted Wera kraftform bitholder to boot, onehanded... what IS that china bit material? lead? sodium?
05:00 AM Tom_L: morning
05:01 AM rmu|w: Loetmichel: i used to shear off M16 bolts when not paying attention while tightening them...
05:05 AM jthornton: morning
05:38 AM Loetmichel: rmu|w: me too... but the point was taht the M4 stainless bolt has no scratch but the T20 bit is twisted one tooth
05:38 AM Loetmichel: how is that possible?
05:38 AM Loetmichel: its not like A2 is particularily hard, is it?
05:48 AM rmu|w: usually not. but it is prone to cold welding.
05:52 AM * Javabean got his es120 to make screwing in tiny screws easier, hopes he doesn't end up with that problem
05:54 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=14412&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- the amount of screws is "over 9000"
05:54 AM Loetmichel: very "fun" to repair those...
05:54 AM Loetmichel: 142 screw out, repair it, 142 screws in, test it: still not good, 142 screw out....
05:56 AM * Javabean reads back, notices what the misspelled word was that was used...
05:57 AM Javabean: everything makes sense now!!! so that's what purple tastes like!
06:39 AM Loetmichel: Javabean: welding screws to the thread is only a problem when you screw them in with 1000++RPM ;)
06:39 AM Loetmichel: you have to generate enough heat by friction to have them welded
06:41 AM * Loetmichel has laughed his ass off when a coworker once came and said "that M12 nut is screwed on a mangled bolt, cant get it lose"... so i ordered him to take one ratchet and hold the bolt and i took the other one an unscrewed the nut... then it fell off the thread smoking... and the coworker caught it in reflex ;)
06:42 AM XXCoder: ow
06:42 AM XXCoder: you basically re-threaded it
06:42 AM Loetmichel: yes
06:42 AM Loetmichel: and fast
06:43 AM jthornton: XXCoder, when drilling larger holes like 1/2" is there a way to stop the long stringy curls?
06:43 AM XXCoder: peck cycle
06:43 AM jthornton: ah
06:43 AM Loetmichel: about 5 90° moves a second with a 3/4" drive ratchet
06:44 AM XXCoder: or use less optium drilling speeds etc
06:44 AM XXCoder: making it break easier
06:44 AM Loetmichel: and the first move pulled the guy over the traverse it was screwed into until he got a better stand to counter my force ;)
06:44 AM XXCoder: if peck cycle not supported
06:45 AM jthornton: less feed speed?
06:45 AM XXCoder: not too sure
06:45 AM Loetmichel: jthornton: either use peck drilling or at least stop z plunging every couple mm for a few tenths of a second
06:45 AM XXCoder: dwelling a bit is a way
06:45 AM Loetmichel: yes
06:45 AM XXCoder: forgot that one
06:46 AM Javabean: using an "impact wrench" to take off nuts from rusty bolts also makes for a "hot potato" catch
06:47 AM Loetmichel: yes
06:48 AM Loetmichel: but the nut was literally smoking (penetrating oil vaporizing). how someone can think its a good idea to try to catch a smoking metal part with bare hands is beyond me
06:49 AM XXCoder: intacts
06:49 AM XXCoder: instacts whatever thats spelled
06:49 AM Loetmichel: instinct?
06:49 AM XXCoder: once tried to catch 50 pound alum bar thats falling
06:49 AM XXCoder: supressed it
06:49 AM XXCoder: not good idea with all that sharp corners
06:49 AM Loetmichel: :-)
06:50 AM Javabean: i caught it, but it wasn't alu and din't have sharp corners
06:50 AM XXCoder: recent meeting they said they rather scrap expensive part than hurt someone
06:50 AM XXCoder: so dont try to catch em
06:50 AM XXCoder: im guessing someone tried
06:51 AM Loetmichel: <- once catched a 4 by 2 feet 1/8" carbon fibre sheet... freshly pressed with the pressed out resin "knifes" on the corner still present.
06:51 AM XXCoder: my boots have scars all over heh i have butterfingers sadly
06:51 AM Loetmichel: ... took me a while to get rid of the cut scars in the palm/fingers
06:51 AM XXCoder: loet you must have bled liters of blood at work total so far
06:51 AM Javabean: all things considered, i end up catching many things not meant to be caught... and i don't even "realize" that i am catching something until its in my hands
06:59 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: acummulated for sure
07:00 AM Loetmichel: single event: not that much, half a liter at max i think ;)
07:00 AM XXCoder: lol
07:00 AM XXCoder: me, maybe trumbleful. mostly by nosebleed
07:00 AM Javabean: thimble?
07:00 AM XXCoder: 1/4 of total by fun cut between fingers and big cut on leg
07:01 AM XXCoder: yeah
07:01 AM XXCoder: sorry tired and quite dizzy
07:01 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: thats the edge of said carbon fibre sheets: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=479
07:01 AM XXCoder: lol. sharper than knives id say
07:01 AM Loetmichel: its "wave grind" like a bread knife, and razor sharp
07:02 AM Loetmichel: slices thru skin like nothing
07:02 AM Loetmichel: i learned pretty wuick to let said sheets fall, ist not like they would break anyway ;)
07:02 AM XXCoder: its like obsidian edge
07:03 AM XXCoder: fricial edge
07:03 AM Loetmichel: yes
07:03 AM XXCoder: sorry cant recall spelling today. too dizzy
07:03 AM Loetmichel: its because the sheets get pressed with a few tons between two sheets of wax paper and the excess resin presses out sideways
07:04 AM Loetmichel: the corner of the red resin is literally 0 thickness
07:04 AM Loetmichel: and slightly wavy because of the paper
07:04 AM Loetmichel: btw. thats geniue airbus carbon
07:05 AM Loetmichel: the sheets come from a company that recycles the prepregs that are close to expire from airbus and press them into carbon sheets for model planes and stuff
07:06 AM Loetmichel: ist another league stiffness and hardness wise compared to regular "model carbon sheets"
07:06 AM XXCoder: i want to play a bit with those sheets etc but i dont think I ever will actually dos o[
07:06 AM XXCoder: do so
07:07 AM Loetmichel: they also make this stuff in carbon and glass fibre: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=4408&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
07:08 AM Loetmichel: 4,5mm thick sheets of two thin layers of glass7carbon with a layer of aramid paper honeycomb in between
07:08 AM p0g0_: Loetmichel, "prepregs"? What are those?
07:08 AM Loetmichel: that sheet is rigid enough to support it on the short edges and knee yourself in the middle without it flexing more than a few mm
07:09 AM jymmmm: Good mornng
07:09 AM Loetmichel: p0g0_: carbon fibre cloth (or glass) sheets drenched in resin, just stack them in the desired mold, apply pressure and heat and the resin will cure
07:10 AM Loetmichel: hence the expiry date because the uncured resin detiorates over time
07:10 AM Loetmichel: it stands for "pre impregnated"
07:14 AM Loetmichel: they are dry to the touch so you can handle/cut them like normal carbon cloth, but once you apply heat and pressure the resin melts, flows into all the cracks and cures
07:15 AM Loetmichel: so no need to mix up resin, apply it and all the potential errors in mix and amont that comes with that
07:15 AM Loetmichel: airbus makes entire back ends of planes out of that stuff, you dont want to have error potential there ;)
07:15 AM XXCoder: interesting
07:16 AM p0g0_: The temp and pressures to cure are pretty high tho, yes?
07:16 AM Loetmichel: IIRC 180°C and a few bar
07:17 AM Loetmichel: notthing crazy
07:17 AM p0g0_: OK, that's low.
07:18 AM Loetmichel: the presses HADEG (the recycling company) has (that i have seen) are just big slabs of steel (about 3m by 2m or so) with a few tons hydraulic cylinder on top and heating elements to the slabs
07:19 AM Loetmichel: they stack a few dozen "layers" of prepreg seperated with wax paper between the steel plates, press down and heat the slabs up for a few minutes
07:19 AM Loetmichel: s/cylinder/ram
07:23 AM miss0r2: bleh... TGIF. My single point threading tool just loosened on the final scratch pass and mangled the entire thread.. Yay
07:23 AM p0g0_: I have a device that might do, c. 30" x 30"- a heated press for mounting large photos. Probably the cam driven force and the Temp are too low tho. I have never found much use for the rig, it was built when silver halide photos used a plastic glue to attach to backing sheets before framing them in glass.
07:23 AM miss0r2: m65x2.0 .. and the part was(apart from the thread) completed on the outside
07:26 AM Loetmichel: miss0r2: get a helicoil ;)
07:28 AM p0g0_: There are thread chasers, if things are not too messed up.
07:30 AM * Loetmichel once made a slight programming error on a similar part to miss0r2s. ended up having a hole that would accept left AND right threaded bolts
07:30 AM Loetmichel: looked funny though
07:30 AM Loetmichel: like a negative of a mill bit for glass fibre
07:31 AM miss0r2: lol
07:32 AM miss0r2: Theres no fixing this
07:32 AM XXCoder: solder it in
07:32 AM miss0r2: half of the thread looks like a twin start
07:32 AM XXCoder: cut new hole and tap again
07:32 AM miss0r2: external thread
07:32 AM XXCoder: same applies ;0
07:32 AM XXCoder: harder tho lol
07:32 AM miss0r2: hehe indeed
07:32 AM miss0r2: meh. I have all weekend.
07:33 AM XXCoder: Loetmichel: you know of "nut in middle of double head ended bolt" trick?
07:33 AM XXCoder: its pretty cool
07:33 AM miss0r2: I just promised to have it ready monday. Its a tool for pulling the stone+hub off a surface grinder spindle
07:33 AM miss0r2: XXCoder: Anyone who has ever seen a lathe surely knows this?
07:34 AM XXCoder: maybe? i dont know anyone that runs stuff at home lol (shop is different)
07:35 AM miss0r2: bleh.. you know me? :D
07:35 AM miss0r2: the amount of stuff I have broken lately is not good for the baseline...:-/
07:35 AM XXCoder: lol in person I meant :)
07:35 AM miss0r2: I know ;) I'm just pulling 'yer chain
07:36 AM XXCoder: :)
07:36 AM XXCoder: i have bunch of cardboard ready for tomorrow. fun
07:37 AM Elmo40: Loetmichel, I mean Hulk... quit breaking bits!
07:39 AM miss0r2: generic chinesium is also known torque screw drivers. they simply break just shy of desired torque
07:42 AM miss0r2: okay. I just ordered a new threading tool and some inserts. I think the blame falls on me for cheaping out on the tooling back when I bought this one. (You see what I did there? I blamed myself and only indirectly the tool)... :D
07:53 AM Elmo40: it is always the tool's fault
07:54 AM Elmo40: but you decide if i mean YOU or the Inserts...
07:54 AM Elmo40: ;-)
07:54 AM XXCoder: oh yeah
07:54 AM XXCoder: today was one of very rare days I manually cut something lol
07:55 AM XXCoder: jogging etc no program
07:55 AM XXCoder: had one stock that was badly cut and sloped end, prepping that would pop it off jaws
07:55 AM XXCoder: so i flattened one end
09:10 AM ziper: I want to make small threaded parts. would it be foolish to convert this to cnc?
09:10 AM ziper: https://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/tls/d/fort-myers-taig-micro-lathe-ii-4500/7044695052.html
09:15 AM Loetmichel: ziper: not foolish but a lot of work
09:15 AM Loetmichel: because it will likely have a lot of play in the threaded rods that do the slider movement
09:15 AM Loetmichel: and play is poison for any CNC control
09:17 AM ziper: I haven't been able to find anything manual with thread cutting capabilities in my price and size range
09:18 AM ziper: well I will go see how much backlash there is in person
09:28 AM SpeedEvil: how much thread cutting have you done?
09:30 AM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb_BURLuI70 IIRC is a decent intro
09:30 AM SpeedEvil: Another Thread Cutting Video?!
09:30 AM SpeedEvil: This Old Ton
09:31 AM SpeedEvil: Will get you an idea of hte issues.
09:31 AM ziper: none, just watched youtube videos
09:32 AM ziper: doesn't matter, the phone number is disconnected
09:33 AM SpeedEvil: In principle, you can do it with very low forces on the tool, if you use some form of thread milling or grinding, rather than cutting with a monolithic toolbit.
09:33 AM SpeedEvil: This may not be an issue if cutting small threads in platinum
09:33 AM SpeedEvil: ^plastic
09:33 AM ziper: was also planning on brass
09:34 AM ziper: I guess i will just save up for a south bend
09:34 AM ziper: but the issue is really making room...
09:36 AM * SpeedEvil has been wondering about a small gearmaking machine.
09:36 AM SpeedEvil: (related as gears are just infinitely coarse threads)
09:40 AM ziper: like what? a shaper with an indexing head?
09:40 AM ziper: or a cnc lathe, rather, with a grinding tool?
09:41 AM SpeedEvil: Think more or less shaper + optional dremel + indexing head.
09:42 AM SpeedEvil: 100mm*12mm or so gears would be the maximum size initially.
10:38 AM net|: https://github.com/tecan/Arduino-Projects/blob/master/un2003-stepper-multiaxis/un2003-stepper-multiaxis.ino keeps the torque compared to Stepper.h and has single step ability
10:38 AM net|: its for omniwheel penplotter
10:38 AM net|: https://github.com/tecan/Arduino-Projects/tree/master/OmniWheel-penplotter wip still
11:35 AM * Loetmichel just printed a cobra MK III (from the Elite:Dangerous game)... maaan that silk gold filament looks good! http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17742&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
12:18 PM unterhaus: what's the website with the stmbl chat?
12:19 PM unterhaus: nvm, I got it
12:51 PM net|: there now it can keep torque got it working in one direction
02:30 PM net|: got it fixed with an unsigned int
03:01 PM gregcnc: SpeedEvil, if you come up with one I'll take one, good gears are not easy to make
03:17 PM SpeedEvil: gregcnc: I know :/
03:32 PM veegee: If I store tools/machinery in a non climate-controlled storage unit, do I risk them rusting?
03:32 PM SpeedEvil: that depends on your definition of non climate controlled.
03:33 PM SpeedEvil: But in general, yes.
03:33 PM SpeedEvil: (50C and bone dry is non climate controlled)
03:33 PM gregcnc: if the machines get below dew point it can be bad, but they can rust anywhere
03:33 PM SpeedEvil: Temperature swings mean rust canhappen almost anywhere if there are wide swings or moderate humidity
03:57 PM veegee: Hmmm so I'll have to put a dehumidifier in the unit
04:00 PM XXCoder: you could essentally turn building into dehumidifer.
04:00 PM XXCoder: uses quite bit power tho heh
04:00 PM XXCoder: shop I work at is always at 70f unless hotter
04:01 PM XXCoder: so its leaky and all. air gets heated, moves up and leaks out
04:01 PM XXCoder: making shop so dry
04:07 PM Tom_L: i would wipe the bare surfaces down with some type of oil
04:08 PM Tom_L: i wipe my vise and slides down with vactra2 if i'm gonna leave it to sit very long
04:09 PM Tom_L: or if it's in storage get some spray cosmolene and put a light coat on things
04:10 PM Tom_L: https://www.cosmolinedirect.com/cosmoline-rp-342-heavy-spray-military-grade-rust-preventive/
04:21 PM jym: Just arrived today, pretty good for replacing spark arrestor... https://www.amazon.com/MTB-SS304-Stainless-Steel-Welded/dp/B076WSJ39Z
04:22 PM jym: 24" x 10ft, 18ga SS 1/2" mesh
04:22 PM jym: err, SS 304 mesh
04:23 PM jym: ...in chimney cap that is
04:31 PM Tom_L: santa clause preventer
04:33 PM XXCoder: poor space residents. no snta there also
04:52 PM jymmmm: lol
04:53 PM XXCoder: the santa problem would be so much worse when we colonize other star systemns
04:54 PM jymmmm: it was getting clogged, called the manufacture, seems to be a design flaw/ known issue. So just going to put the spark arrestor on the OUTSIDE, and that should double the surface area
04:54 PM jymmmm: that's what they suggested at least
04:59 PM Deejay: gn8
05:02 PM net|: cool omniwheel penplotter working now, might more testing but the motors spin
05:15 PM jymmmm: omniwheel?
10:04 PM Javabean: nice cnc build video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_atw3e0nIrg
10:35 PM flyback: BMCC
10:36 PM * flyback smacks Javabean with Elmo42
10:53 PM fjungclaus1 is now known as fjungclaus
11:22 PM XXCoder: Javabean: checking
11:22 PM XXCoder: ugg hope not while video like drunk cam work
11:24 PM XXCoder: bad start but fine afterwards
11:26 PM XXCoder: nice video so far
11:38 PM XXCoder: Javabean: ohhhh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a19OpQfwB2w
