12:38 AM selroc: hi guys
01:52 AM X704 is now known as tiwake
02:12 AM Deejay: moin
03:12 AM Tom_L: morning
04:55 AM jthornton: morning
04:55 AM XXCoder: yo
05:14 AM X704 is now known as tiwake
06:06 AM X704 is now known as tiwake
06:41 AM XXCoder: jthornton: funny, I engraved picture into floor paracleboard sample
06:41 AM XXCoder: it looked solid black.
06:42 AM XXCoder: but when it was done I could barely see it, washed dust off and its one color but very detailed
06:48 AM jthornton: got a photo of it?
06:48 AM XXCoder: it cant be pictured heh
06:48 AM XXCoder: i will try late but getting late plan to sleep fairly soon
06:49 AM jthornton: ok
06:49 AM XXCoder: but it does tell me that machine is fairly dialed in
06:49 AM XXCoder: funny thing is its https://c10.patreonusercontent.com/3/eyJ3IjoxNjAwfQ%3D%3D/patreon-media/p/post/7761611/cab0df7fcc1d48a39db39f0d88e254a7/1.jpg?token-time=1583539200&token-hash=G4IHId1w10c2D8IN-IlRJK04V3D0ErVlNjp6nu8_bWA%3D
06:49 AM jthornton: cool
06:49 AM XXCoder: so it being "hidden is kinda right theme for it lol
07:01 AM jthornton: lol yea
07:02 AM jthornton: I found a DRO for my planer, that should make it much easier to get an exact thickness of board
07:04 AM XXCoder: dro planer? interesting
07:05 AM jthornton: http://www.wixey.com/planer/
07:06 AM jthornton: yea it's a PIA the pointer is broken off the height gauge and no easy way to replace it
07:06 AM jthornton: so I'm going to mount one of those DRO's on it
07:06 AM XXCoder: probably more accurate
07:10 AM jthornton: that's what I'm hoping for fast and accurate
07:12 AM XXCoder: :)
07:12 AM XXCoder: off to bed
08:04 AM skunkworks: I have never seen a tracer in person
08:04 AM skunkworks: heh
08:26 AM skunkworks: dad has an old bellsaw planer.. Boy it has been used a lot..
08:27 AM unterhaus: I wish I had room for a planer like that. Mine lives underneath my tablesaw, and then I put it on the extension when I need to use it
08:28 AM skunkworks: well - this was a hobby farm that morphed into a hobby shop. Small barn for wood working.. Poleshed for machinery.
08:29 AM skunkworks: dad has an oliver jointer.. it is awesome..
08:29 AM skunkworks: like an aircraft carrier...
08:32 AM jthornton: I'm still looking for a good jointer, my buddy gave me one but the fence is not so great
08:32 AM unterhaus: I want a convertible planer/jointer for the width. Might be a downgrade of my 8" delta, but probably not much
08:33 AM unterhaus: Plus they take up less room than mine
08:33 AM skunkworks: like http://cavlon.com/zcstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=470_472&products_id=10965
08:33 AM unterhaus: I built a vanity without using either a planer or a jointer, I like to use hand planes
08:34 AM unterhaus: the aircraft carrier planers are nice, but the thought of getting one in my shop gives me hives
08:34 AM Tom_L: don't drop that on you toe..
08:35 AM unterhaus: I wonder if they go over as easily as a lathe does when being moved
08:35 AM skunkworks: heh - probalby.. but we are pretty safe.
08:43 AM unterhaus: I mostly heard of Penn State physical plant dropping lathes. They sold a Monarch that had been dropped on its front
08:44 AM unterhaus: Which I feel like is a lot harder than most lathes, they have that huge cabinet on the gearbox end
08:45 AM unterhaus: I looked inside the cabinet and backed away slowly. Coolant covered cloth insulation just doesn't seem to be that much fun to work with
08:51 AM skunkworks: our manarch was dropped on its face..
08:51 AM skunkworks: broke a lot of the handles..
08:52 AM skunkworks: but is a still a great lathe..
08:54 AM skunkworks: (and because it was dropped - it was cheap)_
09:38 AM unterhaus: mcmaster doesn't have a short length drill bit in the size needed for a 6mm hole
09:38 AM unterhaus: or at least they are wearing me out trying to find it
09:39 AM Rab: What am I missing? https://www.mcmaster.com/28255A43
09:39 AM unterhaus: 5.2?
09:40 AM Rab: 5.2mm to bore a 6mm hole?
09:41 AM Rab: Or what?
09:41 AM unterhaus: sorry, meant to say 6mm tapped hole. Could cause some misunderstanding
09:41 AM Rab: oh
09:42 AM Rab: What thread pitch?
09:43 AM unterhaus: actually 5mm works for aluminum, 5.5 for stainless
09:43 AM unterhaus: which they do have
09:43 AM gregcnc: 6x1 would be 5mm
09:44 AM gregcnc: it doesn't have to be metric
09:44 AM Rab: There's also some latitude in thread engagement.
09:44 AM gregcnc: right
09:45 AM unterhaus: also can use 4 and 8. Which they have
09:46 AM Rab: A #5 drill is a hair over 5.2mm, #6 a hair under.
09:49 AM unterhaus: 5.25 is 6x.75, don't need
09:52 AM gregcnc: what material?
09:54 AM unterhaus: I was shopping for both 75% and 50% engagement
09:55 AM unterhaus: dunno why the numbered bits weren't showing up for me before, only saw fractional and letter
09:55 AM gregcnc: ok, a few % away isn't a big deal unless you're working to a customer print
09:55 AM gregcnc: mcmaster search can be tricky that way
09:57 AM Rab: McMaster and Digi-Key are the gods of parametric search, but sometimes the only way is to start at the top.
09:58 AM unterhaus: ebay has black oxide solid carbide bits, wonder if that's really solid carbide
09:58 AM gregcnc: lol, if there isn't a part number from a real manufacturer, don't waste your time
09:58 AM _unreal_: FINALLY!!!
09:59 AM Rab: Those use a different paint from the genuine authentic TiN bits.
10:04 AM _unreal_: I just got my fucking cap's for my PSU
10:04 AM _unreal_: 2x 75 VDC 27,000uF caps
10:04 AM _unreal_: and oddly enough the caps I ordered that was "" shipped "" from Kentucky came from Bulgaria
10:04 AM unterhaus: can you fake 2000 100 percent positive ebay feedback?
10:04 AM gregcnc: depends what was sold
10:04 AM _unreal_: unterhaus, yes
10:06 AM _unreal_: I'm waiting on toothed idlers
10:06 AM _unreal_: right now I have smooth one's just so the machine can be working in test phase
10:07 AM unterhaus: we got a peristaltic pump from China. I was a bit worried because of Chinese New Year
10:10 AM gloops: man im feeling very sluggish
10:10 AM gloops: i want to make a pen holder which isnt a big thing but i just cant be bothered to move
10:12 AM gloops: one more cup of tea
10:13 AM unterhaus: I would have another cup of coffee, but my stomach wouldn't like it
10:17 AM unterhaus: I ordered an led bulb to replace the one on my magnifying lamp. Forgot to check the size, hopefully it fits
10:17 AM Javabean: if it doesn't, you will just make a new enclosure for it
10:21 AM unterhaus: that's what I need, another project
10:21 AM unterhaus: speaking of which, looks like I have to replace the dishwasher drain hose
10:22 AM Javabean: sounds messy
10:22 AM unterhaus: probably a little messy, but I think I have to take the dishwasher out, which is always an adventure
10:24 AM Javabean: yes, you do need to pull that out... but there will probably also be a bunch of "water" waiting for you to disconnect the old hose... have plenty of "towels" ready and placed beforehand
10:24 AM unterhaus: The cabinet it is in is weirdly out of square. I have never been able to figure exactly how
10:25 AM unterhaus: when I tried to fix it before, it was amazing how much water was in the line.
10:25 AM Javabean: yes, i have often wondered how the houses they are building in my area are also "out of square", but after visiting lowes/home depot/etc... well i figure that out quick
11:07 AM Deejay: re
11:08 AM unterhaus: I don't know how they make money on houses nowadays with the lumber you can buy
11:08 AM unterhaus: I would be making them with steel framing
11:12 AM unterhaus: I suppose I should design a backsplash for my lathe and go get a quote from the local sheet metal shop
11:15 AM unterhaus: geek squad car just drove by. Feeling sad
11:18 AM Javabean: they make money on houses today in an easy way... they charge 2x what it would be worth otherwise
11:20 AM gloops: they always did lol
11:21 AM gregcnc: hard to work for free
11:23 AM Javabean: they wouldn't be if they charged half the price... except for repairs, but since they do crap work maybe they should stop
11:24 AM unterhaus: there was a good contractor near here that did good work, but the 2008 downturn killed them. They only build outlandishly large houses
11:24 AM gregcnc: once everything is covered in wallboard nobody has any idea
11:24 AM gloops: times change, furniture used to be good
11:24 AM gregcnc: and what was the relative price?
11:25 AM Javabean: oft cheaper
11:25 AM gloops: unterhaus thats a common problem, with a given area of land its more profitable to stick fewer large mansions on it than lots of smaller houses
11:25 AM unterhaus: out house is crappily built, except they hired an artist to do the sheetrock. There is 1/8" of plaster over the whole house
11:26 AM unterhaus: It's all beautifully flat
11:26 AM Javabean: the reason it was cheaper was because the materials were ALOT cheaper
11:26 AM gloops: they dont actually plaster new houses here anymore, its all dry lining, plasterboard and skim
11:27 AM unterhaus: they got the contractor's ne're do well nephew to do the wiring
11:27 AM gloops: metal frame stud walls, all slots together so that relative idiots can do the job
11:28 AM unterhaus: I did a sheet metal soffit in the basement to cover some pipes.
11:28 AM unterhaus: watched youtubes, there was one guy that seemed to be a contractor. Fast forward through the video and he's taking his soffit back apart
11:29 AM unterhaus: I did okay, but there is one seam I wish I had done better
11:30 AM gloops: gregcnc it might cost more for real wood and dovetails initially, but theyre still around, 100 years later
11:30 AM unterhaus: removed/replaced all the basement walls, wish I had done them with steel
11:31 AM unterhaus: gloops, you can't give away antiques right now
11:31 AM gloops: people change kitchens as often as shoes these days
11:33 AM unterhaus: we replaced our countertops with stone. HD was $4000, remodelers were $10000, local stone shop was $3000
11:33 AM unterhaus: stone shop might be too busy now though
11:34 AM unterhaus: remodelers seems to be busy, it was a bit ridiculous though
11:37 AM gregcnc: gloops you dont' get it, nobody buys for 100 years from now. in this day and age, that's why cheap garbage is most profitable.
11:37 AM gregcnc: houses just the same
11:39 AM unterhaus: it's hard to judge a house for most people
11:39 AM unterhaus: big builders are not very good, little builders might or might not be any good, but $$$
11:40 AM Javabean: if you have friends looking to buy a house these days, give them a speedsquare. if the sales person gets nervous or asks you not to, you know not to buy the house
11:42 AM p0g0_: A speedquare is not much use at that scale, the $25 laser levels would be much more useful. But if you don't hire a professional survey, don't be surpised what you learn in later years.
11:42 AM unterhaus: Sick laser scanner :)
11:43 AM Javabean: a speedsquare is plenty useful house scale in my area... shits that bad
11:43 AM unterhaus: I think I could come up with a list of things more important than square though
11:43 AM Javabean: speedsqare has straight edges
11:43 AM p0g0_: plumb bob, someone who knows the local soils, someone that knows the local housing market...
11:43 AM gregcnc: and that's the thing, you only get aces to little bits and pieces
11:43 AM unterhaus: water infiltration, bugs, major structural defects
11:44 AM p0g0_: drainage is kinda huge, not knowing the shrink swell charcteristics of your soils...
11:44 AM unterhaus: the latter should show up in the house inspection, but you'd be surprised. And the inspector only looks for active bugs, not damage
11:44 AM gregcnc: the major stuff is easy to spot. covered up stuff like reno for flip less so.
11:45 AM unterhaus: When we bought our house, the yard was sloped towards the basement door. Should have picked up on that, but shopping fatigue had set in
11:45 AM p0g0_: the thixitropic soils in Christchurch New Zealand literally swallowde cars and houses with some earth quaking.
11:45 AM Javabean: 12" speedsquare... dude it really shows alot of crap these people pull
11:46 AM p0g0_: unterhaus, in most cities in the US, that slope would not be legal.
11:46 AM unterhaus: it was all done by idiot former owners
11:46 AM gregcnc: new recent construction sure
11:46 AM p0g0_: Javabean, repeating isn't much use to me.
11:46 AM gregcnc: old stuff you see it all
11:46 AM p0g0_: yeah, grandfathered
11:46 AM unterhaus: the first owners put in the basement door, they build a berm. Second owner didn't like berm
11:47 AM p0g0_: but still, were you to try to amend the house, you'd likely get nailed by palnning and zoning types
11:47 AM unterhaus: had it removed, as well as the topsoil of 1/3 of the back yard.
11:47 AM p0g0_: *planning
11:47 AM unterhaus: I don't think they look. I had it built back up so it's the highest part of the yard now
11:47 AM Javabean: i hate repeating myself, but until you have actually tried putting a 12" speedsquare against a "new built" house... you won't believe what it shows
11:47 AM unterhaus: Also had a gravel-filled sump put in 6' deep
11:48 AM gregcnc: you mean you didn't get a stormwater survey?
11:48 AM p0g0_: The cities around here would certainly look, but then I don't live in one.
11:48 AM gloops: you can get the best surveyor you want to mark out, theyre still gonna dig the footings trench with a 360 bucket, tip the concrete in from a lorry etc
11:48 AM p0g0_: Javabean, how many houses have you built?
11:48 AM gregcnc: virtually required in all metropolitan ares today
11:48 AM p0g0_: ...
11:48 AM p0g0_: ...
11:48 AM Javabean: how many building have i built??? 4, and several remodels
11:48 AM unterhaus: I feel like we are behind enough that stormwater survey isn't required, but I could be wrong
11:49 AM p0g0_: Then I am most surprised by your notions.
11:49 AM gregcnc: yeah, hope it's not and hope you don't piss off a neighbor
11:49 AM unterhaus: gregcnc, are you in Europe?
11:49 AM gregcnc: US
11:49 AM p0g0_: If work around you shows bad with a 6" square, you really have my sympathy.
11:49 AM Javabean: how many have i put a speedquare to? atleast 30
11:50 AM unterhaus: I didn't disturb the drainage much, if you don't count the fact that it no longer drains into my basement
11:50 AM p0g0_: But, I'd never for a moment think that I can extraploate across the entire house from what I see in a tiny square- I've done way too much eye fake work to have any use for that.
11:50 AM gregcnc: but you did
11:50 AM gloops: i once saw a corner sink that showed something was well out of square, dunno if it was the sink or the corner lol
11:50 AM Javabean: thanks, i was helping someone decide if they wanted a particular house... i have seen much of the bs they do here
11:51 AM p0g0_: Well, don't thank me much, I'd never hire you to survey.
11:51 AM Javabean: good, i hate using the laser equiptment... i always end up at eye level with the damn things
11:51 AM gregcnc: my wife is civil storm water, the most recent laws in IL are nuts
11:52 AM gloops: cant go wrong with 345
11:52 AM p0g0_: If you are about to plunk down the largest capital investment of your life, I'd want the pro's.
11:53 AM p0g0_: 345 is OK, scale that up with a chain and a plumb bob and maybe...
11:53 AM unterhaus: for zoning permit, we have to report percentage of impermeable area on our property. That's all I have ever heard. Basement mods were done with a building permit
11:53 AM gloops: p0g0_ big building companies are more likely to build rubbish in my experience
11:53 AM Javabean: good!!! just don't expect to find anyone near me. the inspectors don't even get out of their cars to sign things off
11:53 AM gloops: so far as houses go
11:53 AM gregcnc: sure depends on what you have to comply with
11:54 AM p0g0_: gloops, sure, not who I'd hire- the banks and real estate types have a stable they call on, and you might actually know a pro.
11:54 AM unterhaus: afaik, any landscaping that doesn't involve a 4' retaining wall can be done without a permit
11:54 AM gregcnc: recently saw a YT video where they had to install underground storage for his gutter drains
11:54 AM p0g0_: Javabean, where are you, I'll be sure to mark it on a map FUBAR.
11:54 AM Javabean: far west texas, and southern new mexico
11:54 AM unterhaus: although my boss had to pay big fines because his back yard drained mud into his neighbor's yard
11:55 AM gregcnc: oh and don't trust you agent on anythign regarding law
11:55 AM p0g0_: Las Cruces ?
11:55 AM Javabean: yes
11:55 AM gloops: local family builder doesnt do many bad jobs before hes unemployed
11:55 AM Javabean: though i am in elpaso
11:55 AM gregcnc: unterhaus, that's why the alws are there
11:55 AM gloops: big firms use contractors and they use sub contractors etc, no personal interest in the job they just want quick cash
11:56 AM t4nk_freenode: like any other 'merchant'?
11:56 AM t4nk_freenode: ;)
11:56 AM gloops: if it hots the fan they go bust and start up again with a different name
11:57 AM unterhaus: gregcnc, it was obviously going to be a problem, dunno why it wasn't caught before. I think that's how they handle it locally. Wait for problems and let the courts settle it
11:58 AM unterhaus: the wisdom of building a subdivision at the bottom a narrow canyon is another issue. Obviously started from erosion
11:58 AM gregcnc: that's what you get when the alws arent' in place
11:58 AM unterhaus: my guess is there was always mud, but my boss became a handy target
11:58 AM gregcnc: stuff like that just doesn't get built when they are
11:59 AM perry_j1987: hmm any of you guys running your shops off genny?
11:59 AM Javabean: unterhaus: there is a whole "housing development" in this area that widened a "narrow canyon" and put expensive houses in it... and hoped that the storm water pipes would keep it dry
11:59 AM unterhaus: I live in a rural hellhole, what can I say?
11:59 AM gregcnc: yeah, free for all until there is a problem
12:00 PM gregcnc: java who is responsible?
12:00 PM gregcnc: genset for power is awful expensive
12:00 PM unterhaus: I had to pay someone to put gravel under my new deck, that has been required by code for over a decade before it was built
12:00 PM unterhaus: they hadn't adopted that version of the code yet
12:00 PM p0g0_: unterhaus, to mashup two bits here, I was not too far from Las Cruces, coming out of Dark Canyon, near the Canyonlands national park, and got to watch a flash flood happen in an arroyo. It'll cure you of ever putting anything in a creek bottom.
12:01 PM gregcnc: the fun part is people buy into places like that, with no clue at all
12:01 PM Javabean: the home owners are still trying to figure that out. but to be fair, the houses didn't get flooded for almost 50years. it took building other areas up before they started getting water into their houses
12:01 PM p0g0_: The rain happened 10-20 miles off, but the water coming thru that desert was wild, fast, and gnarly.
12:02 PM unterhaus: p0g0_ I always buy on top of a hill. My mom bought a house on a dead-flat 1000 year flood plain, and turned out it was year 1000
12:02 PM p0g0_: the 100 years storm measures are not really 100 years, stats suck when you drill down to reality.
12:02 PM Javabean: i wish i could have gotten a "hill top" place... the place i am moving to isn't quite "hill top" but its close
12:02 PM unterhaus: I wish I could find the youtube of her house in the flood
12:03 PM unterhaus: this house has a sloped yard, but it isn't quite enough. flat topped hill
12:03 PM Javabean: oh, and its well outside elpaso from here
12:05 PM p0g0_: Doesn't Texas outlaw planning and zoning? I think I read that somewhere.
12:06 PM Javabean: i don't think so... i have seen "for sale/lease" signs for properties listing c4 zone
12:06 PM p0g0_: Maybe it's just rare, like here.
12:07 PM p0g0_: Harvey taught a lesson too.
12:07 PM Javabean: don't know for sure... but i do know that "code" is just bs here
12:07 PM gregcnc: county, city ordinance typically regulate that
12:07 PM gregcnc: no enforcement?
12:08 PM Javabean: none that i have seen
12:08 PM p0g0_: Well, planning and zoning makes it safe to invest- it tends to bring good things that way.
12:08 PM p0g0_: Here in eastern Kentucky, you just have to buy a lot of land to keep some kind of boundary.
12:08 PM gregcnc: i have to get a permit to replace a water heater, not even sure if I can do it myself
12:08 PM Javabean: i reported what happened to one of the apartments i used to be in. never saw anything done by the local authority. but i do see their vehicles driving around
12:09 PM p0g0_: Heh, here you need only to have the septic and wiring checked, once ever, and literally a case of beer cures all.
12:10 PM * Javabean brb, stomach trying to summon a demon again
12:10 PM gregcnc: I looked at two houses with unpermitted septics and wells.... my agent wasn't even concerned
12:10 PM p0g0_: So folks tend to build a tiny room, and maybe put in septic, then get that inspected then build the rest of the house. same with remodeling.
12:10 PM p0g0_: Your agent wanted the sale.
12:10 PM p0g0_: Nitrosamines happen.
12:11 PM gregcnc: sure, she didn't get it
12:12 PM p0g0_: One of the humorous things here is to see someone dismantle some old shack that has a mains entry and breaker box, all that is left is the bit of wall with the box... then the whole new structure gets put up around that without ever being inspected by anyone.
12:14 PM p0g0_: And hey Javabean, any chance I get you all to take Rand Paul back? He's a tedious carpetbagger.
12:15 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op2sA0xqHtQ - tank stacking fun. ~1m from meeting
12:20 PM p0g0_: l8r all, I'm off to make a black walnut ladder with the Maslow.
12:26 PM Javabean: don't know if anyone is willing to take Rand Paul... but its been a while since i heard that name, and i am not going to look it up
12:26 PM unterhaus: I need to get a permit to replace a water heater too, never do
12:27 PM unterhaus: I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to get a permit to put in a couple of egress windows in the basement, he said in his area nobody would get a permit for that
12:28 PM unterhaus: he lives in a bigger metropolitan area than here
12:28 PM unterhaus: although I think the basement door might not have been permitted
12:37 PM unterhaus: good news is my lamp fits
12:38 PM SpeedEvil: :)
12:38 PM Javabean: well, that's one project done. what's next, unterhaus??
12:39 PM unterhaus: putting my dust collector back together, installing a dro on my lathe
12:39 PM Javabean: 2 perfect projects for a saturday
12:43 PM vitreous: welp, im trying to boot the live cd but it loads into a video garbled desktop that is crashed as far as i can tell. failsafe gets me to a desktop, but latency test wont run and trying to start linuxcnc fails. a good start i'd say
12:44 PM vitreous: i suspect it might be the monitor, which is widescreen, so a slightly unusual aspect ratio?
12:44 PM unterhaus: might get the dc done, no way the dro is going to get done today. Need something to mount the cross slide encoder on
12:45 PM gregcnc: vitreous on board video?
12:45 PM vitreous: no, its an nvidia card
12:45 PM gregcnc: try without
12:46 PM vitreous: the MB doesnt have onboard
12:46 PM vitreous: i can run to work and grab an older card
12:46 PM vitreous: i have several nvidia high end CAD cards here
12:46 PM vitreous: a gtx 970 too
12:47 PM gregcnc: it's been a while for me but proprietary drivers for video can be problematic not sure if that still the case something basic should work
12:47 PM vitreous: ok, ill run to work and get a more basic card
12:48 PM unterhaus: might not support a 4k (or whatever they are called) monitor
12:48 PM vitreous: thats fine, i dont have a 4k monitor
12:48 PM vitreous: its just widescreen
12:48 PM gregcnc: eh mine is running on a pIII 900 and 512MB ram
12:49 PM unterhaus: I have a 42" monitor, no problems with intel graphics on 3840x2160 though
12:49 PM vitreous: thats a big monitor
12:49 PM Javabean: dude, thats old!!! you can get core2quads systems for cheap
12:49 PM vitreous: i have another pc here to try, its not the one i want to use though, as it has no pci slots
12:49 PM vitreous: its more of a client
12:49 PM perry_j1987: any of you running multiple machines (diff times) off single computer
12:52 PM unterhaus: hard to remember, but I think when I got a qhd 27" I had to mess with x settings
12:52 PM unterhaus: it was a real rabbit hole. I think things have gotten better
12:53 PM unterhaus: I got my 42" just when I got old and now my font is really big, so it's just treading water
12:57 PM vitreous: the client pc booted. 20,000 ns jitter
12:58 PM vitreous: to use this machine i'd have to use an ethernet mesa card
12:58 PM vitreous: i suppose there are advantages to ethernet. are there any disadvantages?
12:58 PM gregcnc: plenty good, but you want to beat on it with video opening and closing prg, and check things like power saving
12:59 PM gregcnc: some things only come up in intervals
12:59 PM vitreous: ya, i have to go through and optimize the settings. this pc would be dedicated to the cnc machine, i wouldnt be surfing the net while machining
01:00 PM gregcnc: power saving can be nasty. An HP SFF i have makes a huge spike if the internal fan hits full speed. wouldn't happen normally, but...
01:01 PM vitreous: ah, ok. this is also a SFF. a dell optiplex 780
01:01 PM vitreous: no PP, no PCI slot, well a mini actually
01:02 PM vitreous: usff actually
01:04 PM unterhaus_: I have a couple of $10 optiplex. Plan to use a mesa if I do use them
01:04 PM unterhaus_: haven't tested latency yet
01:05 PM vitreous: ethernet mesa?
01:06 PM vitreous: 7I92M?
01:07 PM unterhaus_: I was thinking about going with a pcie, my comps have slots
01:07 PM unterhaus_: looking at the ethernet versions though, I have a nuc with 2 ehternet ports
01:08 PM unterhaus_: haven't tested latency on that either
01:08 PM vitreous: is there a drawback to ethernet? it seems it would be nice to just swap the pc out and plug the mesa into the new eth port
01:08 PM unterhaus_: I have 50 pin daughter cards, so not going to be using an all-in-one messa card
01:08 PM unterhaus_: that's a real attraction
01:09 PM unterhaus_: ethernet will be around for longer than anything else, I think
01:10 PM vitreous: i havent bought the mesa stuff, so i still can change things
01:12 PM unterhaus_: yeah, probably wouldn't go with 50 pin if I was buying now
01:12 PM selroc: time ago I got this http://store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=83_84&product_id=215 from Mesa, I need a good 2KW spindle
01:13 PM selroc: suggstions?
01:16 PM unterhaus_: must be a way to get to modbus with the 7i76
01:18 PM vitreous: you sure it doesnt take 232 as well?
02:04 PM unterhaus_: someone just reminded me of the scanner I got for $5 because the locking mechanism was in place
02:04 PM unterhaus_: it was the expensive days of apple scanners.
02:05 PM unterhaus_: installing the hobby version of fusion 360, going to miss importing solidworks files
02:08 PM selroc: time ago I got this http://store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=83_84&product_id=215 from Mesa, I need a good 2KW spindlesuggstions?
02:12 PM unterhaus_: selroc, question is on auto-repeat?
02:12 PM selroc: just a reminder
02:13 PM unterhaus_: I don't think you have stated your requirements clearly enough
02:13 PM unterhaus_: on/off/speed control from linux cnc is reasonably easy, as I understand it
02:16 PM selroc: I need a simple 2KW spindle
02:17 PM selroc: maybe someone is able to suggest something useful for me
02:18 PM JT-Shop: dang just sold the Enco and the DRO for the planer showed up... lots to do
02:21 PM unterhaus_: I have always thought that the huangyang 2kw spindles seemed like a good option with the caveat that it has to be genuine
02:21 PM unterhaus_: there are so many counterfeits, it's tricky to tell
02:22 PM unterhaus_: I have a counterfeit huanyang vfd
02:22 PM unterhaus_: works fine
02:25 PM unterhaus_: okay, 12000rpm motor might not be the best fit for an 500 rpm application
02:29 PM unterhaus_: I feel like my collection of dc motors from printers made in the early '90s might not feature too many 5mm shafts
02:29 PM selroc: thanks unterhaus_
02:52 PM unterhaus_: they obviously did not expect my magnifying lamp to last this long
02:52 PM unterhaus_: the ballast transformer was loose inside a box inside some paperboard. That was busy disintegrating
02:52 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I finally got my last opamp in the mail
02:56 PM _unreal_: I have not picked out a spindle motor for my new build yet
02:56 PM _unreal_: its not complete enough for me to really decide
02:57 PM _unreal_: currently waiting for my iron to heat up so I can solder this final opamp
02:58 PM _unreal_: two of my serovo motor controllers NEED ONLY the bleeping picchip programmed
02:58 PM _unreal_: ve7it, My caps came in as well
02:59 PM Javabean: safety reminder!!!! soldering irons get hot!!! and also, feeling hungry due to the smell that soldering iron contact with your skin produces, is kinda traumatizing
02:59 PM * Loetmichel has a magnifying desk lamp with a 200mm lens... have to change the flourescent in there to led soon. Not because it is worn but because the manual starter is annoying like hell
02:59 PM XXCoder: Javabean: yoyu'd not know it from those stock pictures lol
03:00 PM XXCoder: https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/stock-image-fail-soldering-iron-bob-byron-fb__700-png.jpg
03:00 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: do tell!... lately noticed that when i reached over this 250W one to type something: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16477&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
03:00 PM Loetmichel: ... took a good year for the car on the inner left arm to fade away ;)
03:01 PM Loetmichel: scar
03:01 PM pink_vampire: https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/stock-image-fail-soldering-iron-bob-byron-2.jpg
03:01 PM pink_vampire: https://holdforsound.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/wp-image-186099127.jpg
03:01 PM unterhaus_: the ballast in my magnifying lamp made noises. Now that I've seen it, I know why
03:01 PM unterhaus_: should probably find a different cord, this one isn't polarized
03:01 PM * Javabean looks at his arms, hands, legs and feet... doesn't feel jealous. honestly!
03:03 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: nah. serves me well to be so careless and reaching over a hot iron
03:03 PM Loetmichel: <- a bit careless sometimes
03:04 PM unterhaus_: I know someone that got skin cancer because he turned around and pressed his face into a steam pipe
03:04 PM Loetmichel: my grandma used to say "Ungeschicktes Fleisch muss ab!" (cut off/remove the clumsy flesh!) ;)
03:04 PM unterhaus_: staarted making me paranoid about all the times I got burned on my arms when I made bike frames
03:05 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: i dont see how steam burns and cancer are related, other than healing being a slight risk because healing uses lot of cell dividing where something could go wrong
03:05 PM unterhaus_: I am not sure how he got so close to a steam pipe
03:05 PM Loetmichel: oh, thats easy
03:06 PM unterhaus_: any skin insult can result in cancer, it's just that most don't
03:06 PM p0g0_: Javabean, Ron Paul was your senator in past decades, that's why you recall the name.
03:06 PM Loetmichel: i can remember times when i worked on a running genset. face inches away from the exhaust.
03:06 PM unterhaus_: I would hit my ear first
03:06 PM unterhaus_: ssssssss
03:06 PM Loetmichel: i could smell my beard going frizz...
03:07 PM unterhaus_: burning hair is the best
03:08 PM Loetmichel: point is: sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do something thats not really "osha approved"... and sometimes that goes Fubar.
03:08 PM Deejay: gn8
03:08 PM Loetmichel: happens.
03:09 PM Loetmichel: but to fear any inury because it could maybe, possibly in one of a million cases cause cancer is a bit paranoid, dont you think?
03:09 PM unterhaus_: I always like the guys that don't know any more than I do that make 30 minute youtubes
03:09 PM unterhaus_: I only have one friend, and he got skin cancer from a burn. You do the math
03:10 PM Loetmichel: yeah, much to small sample size to make a meaningful statistic from that
03:10 PM Loetmichel: thats what my math says ;)
03:11 PM unterhaus_: I'm doing some work for someone, I send him an email and he's recovering from skin cancer surgery
03:11 PM * Loetmichel hat about a few 10k cuts, bruises, burns and everything you can imagine in his life so far... no cancer yet
03:11 PM Javabean: Loetmichel: had to read that a few times before it stopped saying meth
03:11 PM unterhaus_: they sure had their way with him, his arms looked horrible
03:11 PM Loetmichel: and i am 51 now...
03:11 PM Loetmichel: :-)
03:12 PM unterhaus_: truth be told, I am a lot more worried about sun exposure on my forearms
03:12 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: hihi
03:12 PM unterhaus_: it's just when I burn myself badly, I always think about cancer now
03:12 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: use factor 50 sun cream
03:12 PM Loetmichel: done.
03:12 PM unterhaus_: I use skin sleeves, much better than sun screen
03:12 PM Loetmichel: what?
03:13 PM unterhaus_: I even found some black ones that don't get hot in the sun
03:13 PM unterhaus_: sorry, sun sleeves
03:13 PM Loetmichel: what are skin sleeves?
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: sometimes it pops up for no reason on young people
03:13 PM Loetmichel: ah, spandex tubes for the lower arms
03:13 PM Loetmichel: google helps
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: you should still do what you can to avoid it
03:14 PM unterhaus_: I got these in black https://www.voler.com/browse/product/li/1240536
03:14 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: indeed
03:14 PM unterhaus_: it's not just spandex though
03:14 PM Javabean: i thought "spandex" went out of fashion in the 80's
03:14 PM Javabean: :p
03:14 PM p0g0_: fwiw, skin cancers tend to be very treatable- but don't let them progress
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: Javabean: depends on who is wearing it
03:14 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: whatever that strech fabric is called now
03:15 PM unterhaus_: at 61, I'm not too worried about how I look to people. Anyway, skin cancer is really ugly
03:15 PM unterhaus_: whole cosmetic ship has sailed
03:16 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: i dont care how i look eiterh
03:16 PM Loetmichel: its just WAY to inconvenient to wear them
03:16 PM unterhaus_: I don't like the way the white sun sleeves look though, they get discolored really fast
03:16 PM Javabean: i would find out that they are flamible or electrically conductive!
03:17 PM Loetmichel: also i dont like synthetic fabric on my skin, it a) gets stinky fast and b) isnt so great when you work in it and get a bit of flame or sparks on them
03:17 PM p0g0_: In the rich pageant of cancers, I'll take the superficial, treatable, slow moving ones over any of the rest...
03:17 PM unterhaus_: I think they work for most outside things I do, but mostly cycling
03:17 PM Loetmichel: y- dont likes to peel molten plastic from a burn
03:17 PM Loetmichel: <-
03:17 PM unterhaus_: I guess it depends on how often you get molten stuff near your arms outside. I rarely do.
03:18 PM Javabean: Loetmichel: i thought it was only me that hated that
03:18 PM p0g0_: As my dad literally dipped me in dioxins as a kid, I was glad to outlive the 40 year "most likely" era.
03:18 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: i meant: when i wear those at work and use an angle grinder or a map torch thats not really improbable to get some heat to the arms
03:19 PM CaptHindsight: hah we ate Hexavalent chromium for breakfast :)
03:20 PM Loetmichel: and molten plastic fabric REALLY takes a while to fester out of a burn. believe me, been there done that
03:20 PM Loetmichel: thats why i dont wear plastic clothing any more when doing work
03:21 PM Loetmichel: (as a matter of fact all my clothing these days is 90% cotton minimum)
03:21 PM Javabean: Loetmichel: you gotten pull it out before it cools completely... it really hurts to do, but its less painful than the alternative
03:21 PM unterhaus_: I was wearing plastic leg warmers once when I dropped molten flux on them. Either going out or coming back from a bike ride
03:21 PM Javabean: but i am not a doctor, i can only tell you personal experience
03:21 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: that would mean that i NOTICED the burn in the first place
03:21 PM unterhaus_: I don't think my skin was burned
03:21 PM unterhaus_: if you don't notice, it's not a burn
03:22 PM Loetmichel: when its cooled down and i ask myself why is there a hard part of my skin AGAIN its a bit late ;)
03:22 PM Javabean: ouch... not good, i atleast notice the hot feeling
03:22 PM unterhaus_: I made a frame last summer. My shop for that is very tight. Walked past the cooling frame and ran into it with my arm. That will wake you up
03:22 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: belive me. i tend to ignore small burns. to the point that dont even notice them.
03:23 PM Loetmichel: when working hard that small pain is easily put off as a pinch or similar
03:23 PM unterhaus_: think with brazing steel is that it's still really hot and doesn't look like it at all
03:24 PM Javabean: brazing or welding?
03:24 PM Loetmichel: later when you have time to look you notice that you are bleeding/ have another burn
03:24 PM Loetmichel: been there, done that, too.
03:24 PM unterhaus_: it's always annoying when you notice blood on your work
03:24 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: both
03:24 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: indeed
03:24 PM Loetmichel: :-)
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: even worse when it's not yours and you are working alone
03:24 PM Javabean: i don't know... never dealt with brazing steel...
03:25 PM unterhaus_: we had a grad student that worked all night a lot. One morning, there was a trail of blood out of the lab and no sign of him
03:25 PM Loetmichel: Javabean: brazing is the usual method to repair cast iron
03:25 PM Loetmichel: because welding doesent work well there
03:25 PM p0g0_: unterhaus_, and?
03:25 PM XXCoder: he was never seen again
03:26 PM Javabean: dude, trails of blood and missing people are not good combos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
03:26 PM unterhaus_: he was okay, but it was pretty gaudy trail of blood
03:26 PM XXCoder: ;)
03:26 PM XXCoder: thats not very good. good that hes ok
03:26 PM unterhaus_: that's a good way to get people excited
03:26 PM unterhaus_: I threw away the grinder because of him, he was in the habit of grinding aluminum
03:27 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: i went on the roof a few weeks back at the company to assess the tornado damage... turns out some idiot installed a satelite dish on the ladder up to the roof.
03:27 PM Loetmichel: with the m8 bolts pointing inward... result was me hitting the head.
03:27 PM unterhaus_: where else would you put the satellite dish? Handy mounting device right there
03:27 PM p0g0_: Use it for a step...
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: and how often is the ladder used?
03:28 PM Loetmichel: didnt think bad of it apart from some swearing, climbed up, did the assesment, noticed something warm running down my face...
03:28 PM p0g0_: it'll stop working well soon
03:28 PM unterhaus_: almost never, TV is used all the time
03:28 PM Loetmichel: "ah well, blood again. *sigh*"
03:28 PM unterhaus_: big sign
03:28 PM unterhaus_: sigh
03:28 PM Loetmichel: climbed back into the company... secretary looked at me like i was a zombie...
03:28 PM p0g0_: more tales of blood...
03:29 PM Loetmichel: "MICHEL! DO I HAVE TO DRIVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL AGAIN?"
03:29 PM p0g0_: or better, more tales of bloody trails
03:29 PM Loetmichel: <- "nope, looks worse than it is... just get me a towel and i shower it off"
03:29 PM p0g0_: Loetmichel, does she do that a lot?
03:29 PM p0g0_: mostly you talk about small insults
03:29 PM XXCoder: heh i have only one. i somehow nicked myself when working, and didnt feel it. so after unknown length of working (i guess 15 min or so?) i notice tools having blood
03:30 PM XXCoder: oh im bleeding
03:30 PM unterhaus_: heads bleed heavily, I have had cuts nobody could find that made it look like I was dying
03:30 PM XXCoder: bandaid it and clean all tools real goodf
03:30 PM Loetmichel: 10 minutes showering later i was back at work... wasnt SO bad. http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17487&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
03:31 PM Loetmichel: p0g0_: occasionally, yes
03:31 PM Loetmichel: normally to get some stitches
03:31 PM unterhaus_: trying to figure out from utube how the switch works on a magnifying lamp is a fools errand
03:31 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: classic 2 switch thing?
03:32 PM unterhaus_: It must have a momentary and an on/off
03:32 PM Loetmichel: or one switch with "OFF/ON/start"?
03:32 PM unterhaus_: press and hold to start the lamp
03:32 PM unterhaus_: must be a starter winding in there?
03:32 PM Loetmichel: yes, thats a 3 position switch
03:32 PM Loetmichel: like the ignition on a car
03:32 PM p0g0_: I stopped an entire restaurant's dinner dialogs once when someone asked me how I got "those funny holes in my shirt sleeve" :chainsaw, just as it was stopping had snagged it, but the word "chainsaw" got them. It's was proof positive that nigh everyone in a restaurant is eavesdropping.
03:33 PM unterhaus_: my wife hasn't learned about the eavesdropping, she's older than me
03:33 PM Loetmichel: off: off, on-> power to the ballast, start-> shorting the tube so the heaters start to glow. on release the induced high voltage in the ballast starts the Flourescent
03:33 PM unterhaus_: she'll say something mean about people, I have to remind her they can probably hear her
03:33 PM unterhaus_: the ballast is always powered
03:34 PM unterhaus_: transformer
03:34 PM XXCoder: heh unterhaus_ my sis in law and her friend was chatting in ASL at reserant. next booth they was nasty mocking deaf people.
03:34 PM unterhaus_: Loetmichael, so one set of contacts will be on/off
03:34 PM XXCoder: sis in law's friend is hearing.
03:34 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: nope, the ballast ISNT always powered
03:35 PM XXCoder: she told them that she heard whole thing and that they wasnt very nice people at all.
03:35 PM Loetmichel: if the ballast is in the foot/plug the switch is simply connecting the ballast to the tube
03:35 PM unterhaus_: power goes through an autotransformer, two wires go to lamp
03:35 PM Loetmichel: no autotransformer
03:35 PM Loetmichel: just a single coil
03:35 PM Loetmichel: the ballast is a simple inductor
03:35 PM unterhaus_: looks like
03:36 PM Loetmichel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorescent_lamp#/media/File:Fluorescent_Light.svg
03:37 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus_: the switch just does the job of D
03:37 PM Loetmichel: and connects the ballast to the tube when "on"
03:38 PM unterhaus_: so that can just go away
03:38 PM unterhaus_: 120v led
03:38 PM Loetmichel: those magnifying lamp HAVE no starters (d)
03:39 PM unterhaus_: how do they start?
03:40 PM unterhaus_: hopefully one side of the switch is just on/off so I don't have to swap it out
03:42 PM Loetmichel: as i said: the switch replaces the starter
03:43 PM Loetmichel: one side of it connects the ballast to one of the tube pins, the other (momentary) side shorts the heaters
03:43 PM Loetmichel: when you switch it on it powers the tube, but nothing happens because its cold and 120V are not enough to ignite it
03:45 PM Loetmichel: the moment you go "start" it shorts the heaters so the ballast acts as a current limiter and pumps wuite some current thru the heaters. the moment you release the "start" it will go open circuit, resulting in the ballast magnetic field collapsing and inducing about 2kV which starts the arc in the lamp.
03:46 PM Loetmichel: then the ballast is back to acting as a current limiter because the "burning" voltage of a flourescent is 60-80V (depending on length)
03:47 PM Loetmichel: understood?
03:49 PM CaptHindsight: doesn't sound like any LED
03:50 PM unterhaus_: I'm rewireing a florescent to led
03:50 PM Loetmichel: heating the electrodes is neccessary because it provides an "electron gas" that lowers the ignition voltage. you can start a flourescent cold, but that needs a LOT more voltage
03:51 PM Loetmichel: yes, i described how that circuit works NOW
03:51 PM unterhaus_: well, there is no position of the switch that is low impedance between any two wires
03:51 PM Loetmichel: if you want to have a led in there: just short/remove the ballast, wire the led to the two pins that go to neutral and the "on" switch and disconnect the "start" switch
03:51 PM unterhaus_: no wonder it didn't like to stay on
03:52 PM unterhaus_: it's a push switch, but I think you know that
03:52 PM Loetmichel: can you take a picture of the switch? maybe i can take an educated guess which pins do what
03:53 PM Loetmichel: the back of the switch
03:55 PM gregcnc: do I need this? broken handwheel https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/for/d/woodstock-new-dake-corporation-arbor/7079602818.html
03:56 PM unterhaus_: the handwheel is pretty handy
03:57 PM XXCoder: oh hey that is same model "restored" by one of dumb yt channels
03:57 PM unterhaus_: the back of the switch is just plastic with 4 wires coming out. One pair of red, one pair of black
03:57 PM XXCoder: one you linked to is much nicer
03:58 PM gregcnc: it is new. this local guy sells stuff that literally fell off a truck, damaged in shipping or simehting
03:58 PM XXCoder: maybe tou can solder? or make new one
03:58 PM unterhaus_: dropped an arbor press is a sad story
03:58 PM gregcnc: 68$ new or well CNC
03:58 PM XXCoder: or order warranty replacement
03:58 PM gregcnc: yeah that worries me
03:58 PM XXCoder: it IS new should still be warranty
03:59 PM unterhaus_: warranty excludes falls from a truck
04:00 PM unterhaus_: we had a dake arbor press at work, really nice to have that adjustable arbor
04:00 PM XXCoder: oh too bad, but probably can order part?
04:00 PM unterhaus_: Loetmichel, switch looks like this but much nicer button https://www.ebay.com/c/692518577
04:01 PM gregcnc: this is pretty good too https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/for/d/woodstock-new-proto-540s-tool-chest/7079606910.html
04:01 PM Loetmichel: unterhaus: i doubt that
04:01 PM gregcnc: but you can tell it's been hit pretty hard wrinkled in front too
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: pretty much how they all to come right from the box
04:05 PM gregcnc: hah yeah, I can't afford new toolboxes
04:05 PM CaptHindsight: i just ask them to open the boxes now before I leave the store
04:05 PM unterhaus_: HD gave up on having appropriate number of drawers in their toolboxes
04:06 PM unterhaus_: the best cheap ones are harbor freight, as much as it pains me to say that
04:06 PM gregcnc: finally warmed up enough to mess with the starter. turned out to be ground strap
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: yeah!
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: somebody left a 4ft high set of Weatherguard shelves out front
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: 3-4 hits with a hammer and all the shelves slide easily again
04:08 PM CaptHindsight: looks like they ran into one corner with something
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: $250 ? for real https://www.carid.com/weather-guard/white-4-drawer-cabinet-mpn-9914-3-02.html
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: then this is $1K worth of drawers
04:12 PM gregcnc: you haven't priced lista or vidmar?
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: even worse?
04:13 PM gregcnc: double
04:14 PM CaptHindsight: is each drawer machined or something?
04:14 PM CaptHindsight: they are all powder coated cold roll
04:16 PM CaptHindsight: not sure who can afford new toolboxes at those prices
04:17 PM XXCoder: heh I saw prices in catalog and went to costco to buy mine
04:18 PM XXCoder: my toolcart is much larger than most there but cost 660 bucks
04:18 PM XXCoder: while common ones is small cart for $800
04:18 PM XXCoder: fuck that and i get nice room to organize stuff too
04:19 PM Javabean: CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/tool-box-snap-on/142479011110
04:19 PM Javabean: i wonder what is wrong with it tho, that is really cheap
04:19 PM XXCoder: "cheap" lol my cart is almost as wide but taller and 660, new
04:19 PM CaptHindsight: snap-on makes nice tools, well mostly, but the cabinets are nothing special

04:21 PM XXCoder: my bottom right drawer is shoes, above that is soylent bottles for lunch
04:22 PM Javabean: yesterday, whilest getting the wheels/tires changed on a humvee, found out the mechanic was selling his 40ish year old snapon tool box setup for $5k... really really rather not good condition, got it for $15k about 20 years ago
04:22 PM XXCoder: bottom left is fans, chargers, coat
04:22 PM XXCoder: java old ones can be nice if decent condition. its before they cheapened it!
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: are the snap-on boxes welded from 5mm plate or similar?
04:23 PM Javabean: every drawer needs the slides/rollers replaced
04:23 PM gregcnc: I need something like this https://www.bidspotter.com/en-us/auction-catalogues/mea/catalogue-id-meadow10015/lot-392b0cd7-8f39-40b5-9c9e-ab5f014ebb37
04:23 PM Javabean: no, even his was just junk 16-gauge sheet steel
04:24 PM gregcnc: new https://www.globalindustrial.com/p/storage/cabinets/modular-drawer/lista-15-drawer-standard-width-cabinet-blue-keyed-alike
04:24 PM XXCoder: that one is great for certain uses
04:24 PM CaptHindsight: drawer slides that cost more than Hiwin linear rail
04:25 PM Javabean: secure??? gregcnc, should see what LPL has to say about those locks
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: if you build it they will come (if you have the brand name)
04:25 PM XXCoder: ummm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmMtouz7DRE is that new version? it has no door! so cheapened
04:27 PM XXCoder: https://www.gumtree.com/p/tool-storage-workbenches/kirkland-42inch-wide-tool-cabinet-chest-vgc/1309598374 umm bottom drawer has 2 drawer sliders didnt notice that
04:27 PM XXCoder: anyway I love mine, its nearly 5 years old of constant use
04:28 PM veegee: Got my C5 ground ball screw kit
04:28 PM veegee: For my First LC 1-1/2 mill. $2,500 CAD, not sure if that's too much
04:29 PM veegee: but oh well I have it now. Time to disassemble the table and saddle and install this thing and get some super clean climb milling cuts
04:29 PM CaptHindsight: LC 1-1/2 mill? what is that?
04:29 PM gregcnc: 2500 canuck bucks for ball screws? how many linear feet did you get? or are these name brand?
04:29 PM veegee: CaptHindsight bridgeport clone
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: 2500 for the whole mill?
04:30 PM veegee: for just the ball screws'
04:30 PM veegee: I already had the mill
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: or just the set of 3 screws or just one set?
04:30 PM veegee: grantsmith they're directly from the First company, manufacturer of the mill
04:30 PM veegee: gregcnc I mean, sorry
04:31 PM veegee: CaptHindsight X and Y. Don't care about Z
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: bbl
04:31 PM * Javabean waves to capt as he looks back at us all
04:32 PM gregcnc: seems a little high, but if it's a full kit and drops in probably not terrible
04:32 PM veegee: Rockford ball screw quoted me approximately the same price, but for much worse C7 rolled ball screws
04:32 PM veegee: Yeah it's a kit and drops in
04:33 PM Javabean: for 2500 they had better prove to be acurate down to atleast one nanometer
04:33 PM XXCoder: lol
04:34 PM veegee: I don't know, I got a bunch of quotes from various companies and the manufacturer had the best spec and price
04:34 PM veegee: also the local distributor had them in stock
04:34 PM Javabean: if they don't bring the accuracy to such a standard, you ought to be able to get those leadscrews for about 500
04:34 PM veegee: Javabean I searched a long time, can you link me to any source that has them for that price?
04:35 PM Javabean: would need to know the lengths, diameters and pitches of said screws
04:37 PM _unreal_: I'm going to go with ball screw for my Z
04:38 PM _unreal_: That 10 to 1 ratio servo I have will easly direct drive it
04:38 PM _unreal_: thats a higher ratio then my other motors driving my X and Y
04:38 PM _unreal_: BY a lot
04:38 PM veegee: Javabean even on ebay I'm seeing similar prices https://www.ebay.ca/itm/BRIDGEPORT-KNEE-MILL-BALL-SCREW-SET-12-x-42-w-YOKE-PRECISION-GROUND-NEW/254210323950?hash=item3b301db5ee:g:2qoAAOxySE9Q5eu6
04:39 PM veegee: I have no idea how you got $500
04:39 PM _unreal_: Y is 10 teeth to 48 teeth, X is 10 to 48 teeth
04:39 PM veegee: who is supplying ball screws at those prices?
04:41 PM veegee: it's a 9x42 table
04:41 PM Javabean: random link, you haven't mentioned sizes https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32880648232.html
04:42 PM Tom_L: 20mm?
04:44 PM Javabean: shit, wtf?? now aliexpress wants me to login just to browse?
04:44 PM XXCoder: thats you
04:44 PM Tom_L: yeah i noticed that the other day
04:44 PM XXCoder: i never needed to login to browse and still same
04:46 PM veegee: I think mine are accurate to better than 1µm per 30cm or 0.0005"/ft
04:47 PM veegee: Javabean here are the sizes: https://rockfordballscrew.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Diagram_PreloadedBridgeportRetrofitKits_1.png
04:47 PM veegee: assume 42" length
04:49 PM XXCoder: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32959639987.html
04:49 PM XXCoder: interesting
04:49 PM XXCoder: wonder if that can make good and very fast alser engraver lol
04:49 PM veegee: Can't seem to find any ground ball screws on aliexpress in anything close to the sizes needed
04:50 PM XXCoder: its hard to get sizes above 500mm due to shipping stuff
04:50 PM XXCoder: it rpidly becomes not worth it past that size
04:50 PM veegee: Yeah so I'm not sure where he got the $500 number from
04:50 PM Javabean: i have seen 1200mm leadscrews and i know ballscrews and rails
04:50 PM veegee: At those prices I'm seeing C7 rolled ball screws in much smaller sizes
04:50 PM Javabean: https://www.ebay.com/itm/12-PMI-Ball-Screw-Y-Axis-BA105400018-0-L25-5-08T4-FSIC-430-610-0-012/172267766154
04:51 PM XXCoder: 12 inch thats quite short. maybe good for z
04:52 PM veegee: Ok I don't feel so bad about the price I paid anymore. Full kit including everything needed C5 ground and didn't need to wait for it to ship. Also supported by manufacturer with warranty if any issues
04:53 PM * Javabean grumbles that aliexpress still won't let him on
04:54 PM XXCoder: can always create login but yeah wonder why they want logins now
04:54 PM XXCoder: because that creates a barrier that people is usually resistant to when casually browsing.
04:54 PM XXCoder: casually browsing increases chance of sales
04:55 PM veegee: For the record I didn't need to log in
04:55 PM XXCoder: but do you have account at all?
04:55 PM Javabean: also doesn't help i am trying to math the sizes veegee posted into something that others know
04:55 PM XXCoder: and previously logged in
04:56 PM veegee: XXCoder yeah I do and I just tested in private browsing mode
04:56 PM veegee: still didn't make me log in
04:56 PM Javabean: nope, no account... i have been good!!! that site could get expensive for me
04:56 PM veegee: but I'm from a civilized country not led by a fascist clown
04:56 PM Javabean: maybe my ip is flagged for checking prices
04:56 PM XXCoder: lemme test on chromeium. never logged in it
04:57 PM XXCoder: coupon popup
04:57 PM XXCoder: and thats it
04:57 PM XXCoder: UFGH smooth scrolling
04:57 PM XXCoder: I hate it
04:58 PM veegee: disable it
04:59 PM XXCoder: where?
04:59 PM Javabean: hah!!! right in the link that they wan't me to goto after login, it says "punish" "5secdata".... hahaha
05:00 PM veegee: XXCoder in the settings, search smooth
05:00 PM XXCoder: HAH! have to go to chrome://flags/#smooth-scrolling
05:00 PM veegee: chrome://flags/#smooth-scrolling
05:00 PM veegee: Yeah meant to post that, forgot it was removed from the settings page
05:01 PM XXCoder: flipping companies that hide everything
05:01 PM Javabean: ok, so the reason is probably that i set off their anti- bot/spider/scraper system
05:01 PM XXCoder: I hate chromeium
05:01 PM XXCoder: only reason I have it is backup stuff
05:01 PM XXCoder: good thing as laserweb dont work in firefox due to opengl issues
05:03 PM veegee: LOLLLL "HIWIN is a combination of Hi-tech WINner. This means, "You are a Hi-tech WINner with us.""
05:04 PM veegee: no spek da engrish
05:04 PM veegee: seriously who comes up with these chinese brand names
05:07 PM veegee: Well there is this for $1,000 but they're rolled and likely C7: https://www.machinerypartsdepot.com/product/RBS-BP
05:07 PM veegee: Specs not listed
05:11 PM XXCoder: no specs = lolrandom
06:14 PM jthornton: got a start on making the parts to install the DRO on the planer
06:16 PM jthornton: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/29-forum-announcements/38434-linuxcnc-wallpapers#158237
06:21 PM XXCoder: nice
08:14 PM Javabean: https://i.redd.it/iqbh95kl7ji41.jpg reposting something i saw elsewhere, nsfw its shocking when you notice
08:16 PM XXCoder: the dead?
08:17 PM Javabean: the glass
08:26 PM XXCoder: chain and stuff?
08:26 PM Javabean: the window colored glass....
08:27 PM XXCoder: yeah i looked real close at it. crosses wires caps and sky
08:28 PM XXCoder: hmm pattern on cross?
08:28 PM Javabean: squirrels are actually one of the main causes for power outages in the us... the image in the window glass is a power pole, which they are long enough to short out
08:30 PM Javabean: they also go through and "take down" substations looking whilest trying to hide the various nuts they find
08:30 PM XXCoder: lol ok
08:30 PM XXCoder: what makes it nfsw tho
08:31 PM Javabean: your job is over for the day if they knock out the power
08:31 PM XXCoder: ah lol
08:31 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: you ever deal with geared drones?
08:32 PM Loetmichel: you mean like the early mini drones with 4 CD drive DC motors that are geared down?
08:32 PM XXCoder: clockwork!
08:32 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: kinda yeah
08:32 PM Loetmichel: i once had one
08:32 PM Loetmichel: maybe still have
08:33 PM Loetmichel: (cant find it at the moment) but i dont think much of them
08:33 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k17KdZdIyEw
08:33 PM Loetmichel: they go thru DC motors like using them as fuel
08:34 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: I got one, two motors stopped turning, returned it, got the replacement, and happenineg again, this is straight out of the box. any suggestions?
08:34 PM Tom_L: don't buy another one?
08:34 PM Loetmichel: OOTB or after half an hour?
08:34 PM jymmmm: Tom_L Look at that video, looks great
08:35 PM Loetmichel: if the latter: normal lifespan for those motors ;)
08:35 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel I can't even get the trim adjusted
08:35 PM Loetmichel: thats not good
08:35 PM jymmmm: the motors still spins, but the propeer are inconsistant
08:35 PM Loetmichel: is it expensive or dirt cheap?
08:36 PM jymmmm: $60
08:36 PM jymmmm: I had high hopes based on that video, so not sure whats up
08:37 PM jymmmm: other good reviews too
08:37 PM Loetmichel: could be a simple as cheap ass motors that get overloaded 500% and you got a few early dropouts
08:38 PM Loetmichel: as i said: if they are DC motors geared down they will probably live no longer than 30 min
08:38 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: then what?
08:38 PM Loetmichel: my cheap one was 80 eur and i ordert 4 exra motors
08:38 PM Loetmichel: and they lasted not long.
08:38 PM jymmmm: Then wahat, burn out?
08:38 PM jymmmm: no longer spin?
08:38 PM Loetmichel: brushes vanished
08:39 PM Loetmichel: stuttering and no spin
08:39 PM jymmmm: whats a good way to test RPM, etc?
08:39 PM Loetmichel: if you have one: optical RPM meter
08:40 PM Loetmichel: if you dont: photodiode and frequency meter or oscilloscope
08:40 PM Loetmichel: and a bit of math ;)
08:40 PM jymmmm: lol
08:40 PM jymmmm: ok, no cheap tester?
08:40 PM jymmmm: lol
08:43 PM Loetmichel: Jymmm: there are apps for smartphones that use the mic
08:44 PM Loetmichel: but they dont work well with mutliple rotors for obvious reasons
08:45 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: I'll see if I can unplug the other three
09:33 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: If I drive the motors directly on a PS, shuldn't the amperage be about the same on all motors?
09:44 PM net|: https://github.com/tecan/MaslowCNC-ALT << got arduino motor shield v1 working just need to calibrate now.
10:07 PM selroc: hi guys
10:50 PM JesseG: Howdy. Here's short video of my dynamic balancer project: https://youtu.be/p-E9Q5JAC8k
10:51 PM XXCoder: lol. love it when something spins so fast you see it as single object
10:53 PM JesseG: well, that can be achieved also with slow exposure, but in this case 22krpm is a decent clip
10:54 PM XXCoder: yeah
11:07 PM fjungclaus1 is now known as fjungclaus
11:14 PM Elmo40: i tell ya. installing shelves to get stuff off the floor is so productive!
11:14 PM XXCoder: more room also
11:17 PM Elmo40: same room but better utilizing vertical space :-)
11:17 PM XXCoder: too bad we cant generate artifical spaces yet
11:18 PM XXCoder: lol an ant is walking around on wood thats being burned by laser
11:18 PM XXCoder: wonder if it would acciently get vaporized
11:18 PM XXCoder: went away heh guess not
11:19 PM Elmo40: they sense heat
11:19 PM XXCoder: heh with right arudino code and camera I guess it could hunt and zap ants walking in workspace
11:20 PM Elmo40: for sure.
11:20 PM XXCoder: its engraving a pattern now
11:20 PM XXCoder: lots gradients to see how well it can do it
11:22 PM Elmo40: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/SwisTrack
11:22 PM Elmo40: use this. track your prey...
11:22 PM XXCoder: lol
11:22 PM Elmo40: plot their path
11:23 PM Elmo40: came out in '08
11:23 PM Elmo40: nothing else...
11:25 PM XXCoder: too bad
11:26 PM Elmo40: someone else has made the software. don't know what it is called. i'm sure amazon tracks their drones via live satellite...
