02:15 AM Deejay: moin
04:14 AM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: yeah he was working on sim parts. sad that he died
04:15 AM XXCoder: im pretty sure he was a rather large loss to germany as he was making tons of small cnc machines for schools
04:15 AM XXCoder: some part of skills program for that country
04:34 AM Tom_L: morning
04:35 AM XXCoder: yo
04:58 AM jthornton: morning
04:59 AM XXCoder: hey
06:06 AM _unreal_: XXCoder, who died?
06:06 AM XXCoder: i forgot his nickname. dont think he ever said his actual name
06:06 AM _unreal_: ?
06:06 AM XXCoder: its a bit ago by now. half year? year ago?
06:06 AM _unreal_: someone from the chan? or someone in the world?
06:07 AM XXCoder: here.
06:07 AM _unreal_: shrug..
06:08 AM _unreal_: well time to get dressed for work
06:08 AM XXCoder: hes quite nice guy
06:09 AM XXCoder: cant spell worth a damn but nice guy
07:23 AM Tom_L: XXCoder, IchGuckLive
07:31 AM unterhaus: element 14 has 17000 pi touchscreens available. Order soon, avoid the rush
07:43 AM * SpeedEvil is conflicted over PI. I wish a company who provided docs was involved.
07:44 AM unterhaus: I have a pi 2, I think. Never even powered it up
07:45 AM unterhaus: I saw the touchscreens when I was checking my order for heatsinks, coming from the UK
07:45 AM unterhaus: I don't know if newark is pranking me by taking the order or not
08:05 AM unterhaus: I really need to get my mill up and running. I screwed everything up when I moved it
08:05 AM unterhaus: and then I crushed one of my fingers with it, which really slowed things down
08:07 AM unterhaus: I need to move it again, unfortunately.
08:40 AM * JT-Shop attempts to make this part again WITHOUT screwing it up this time
08:47 AM Loetmichel: *GNAH!* Why Samsung? They have spent the Note3 (GT-9005N) an usb3 port... but the cardreader can read at 2mb/sec MAX from the class 10 card in the phone... *waiting for godot*....
08:48 AM unterhaus: hopefully you aren't waiting for Godot, he never shows up
08:48 AM Loetmichel: unterhaus: i know
08:51 AM nvz: _unreal_: ?
08:54 AM unterhaus: I miss the hand tapper at work. They had a nice little precision one. Can't find it online and I'm a bit afraid what the price is if I do
08:57 AM unterhaus: I always called it a tap stand, but if you search for that you find beer dispensing equipment
08:57 AM nvz: you mean for making threads?
08:58 AM nvz: kinda resembles a transit on a tripod kinda deal..
08:59 AM unterhaus: It's a stand that holds a tap. found the one I liked http://www.bauerprecision.com/?page_id=17
09:01 AM nvz: https://www.penntoolco.com/precise-universal-hand-tapper-assures-straight-perpendicular-tapped-holes-265-110/
09:01 AM nvz: under $200
09:03 AM nvz: can probably git that or similar used for $100-$120
09:03 AM nvz: well. get that is.. git doesn't yet have the ability to transfer matter :P
09:03 AM unterhaus: haven't started haunting ebay for one yet
09:04 AM unterhaus: the skate company bauer, of course has a batch of cheaply made skating equipment called "precision"
09:04 AM unterhaus: so it's really a pain to search for bauer precision on ebay
09:05 AM nvz: ebay has great filters imho
09:05 AM unterhaus: I think the cheapest I have seen that penn tool tapper for is a little under $150
09:05 AM nvz: I just wish it'd remember the shit.. heh.. cause I always wanna search buy it now
09:06 AM unterhaus: I used to understand ebay searches, but then they broke them and when they fixed it, they changed everything
09:06 AM nvz: https://www.ebay.com/i/392567342441 is a similar one without the bits for $120
09:07 AM nvz: only complaints I have is that it doesnt remember the settings, and this trend of various shopping sites allowing listings with multiple product options and it doesnt list them correctly by price
09:07 AM nvz: if I cared enough I could just do up a python program to address those issues
09:09 AM nvz: particularly when looking for cheap things like sd cards or something.. its really annoying when the list price shows in the range it should be, then you go to the listing, have to select which one you want and its double or more
09:09 AM nvz: makes it take longer to find a deal with that shit
09:11 AM unterhaus: they don't let you exclude terms in parens anymore, have to have -skate -skates etc
09:12 AM unterhaus: cant exclude skate*
09:12 AM nvz: just select a proper category
09:12 AM unterhaus: freshman compsci programming exercise
09:12 AM unterhaus: jerkwater vendors put skating stuff in business and industrial
09:13 AM nvz: :P
09:13 AM unterhaus: it used to be very nice. All my saved searches are now broken
09:14 AM unterhaus: I'd rather not get one of those big hand tappers. I have no room in my shop, it would be in the way most of the time
09:14 AM unterhaus: that Bauer precision 110 is a really nice size, and you can rotate the spindle and use it on a mill
09:15 AM unterhaus: the crummy ones they are selling for about $110 might be okay, but it looks like it has a drill chuck to hold the taps
10:02 AM rmaw: hello
10:02 AM rmaw: anyone do much injection molding ?
10:03 AM rmaw: specifically with PP
10:42 AM JT-Shop: I do a bunch of automation at an injection molding plant
11:30 AM unterhaus: dangit, the stuff that was supposed to show up from amazon apparently wasn't shipped
11:34 AM unterhaus: can'
11:34 AM unterhaus: t believe fastenal doesn't have metric set screws
11:39 AM CaptHindsight: 'ty unless its available with Prime shipping I generally don't bother since it ends up with some shipping delay
11:41 AM roycroft: mcmaster definitely have metric set screws
11:42 AM roycroft: fastenal are very good at charging more than is reasonable for commodity hardware that is obtainable from a big box store like home depot or lowe's
11:42 AM roycroft: not so good at carrying interesting stuff
11:51 AM unterhaus: it was prime next day, they messed up somehow
11:53 AM unterhaus: okay, the realized the problem and shipped it
11:53 AM unterhaus: I thought about ordering from mcmaster, but it would have doubled the price on shipping
11:55 AM CaptHindsight: McMaster is a 2 hour round trip with lunch for me but their prices are so high I just use them in emergencies
11:55 AM unterhaus: my experience with amazon when they screw up has not been good, I thought I might have to reorder
11:55 AM unterhaus: I figure if mcmaster is going to sell me chinese fasteners, might as well get them from amazon
11:56 AM unterhaus: definite drop off in quality from Mcmaster since they did that
11:56 AM CaptHindsight: in the olden days we used to be able to get hardware and raw materials pretty quickly
11:57 AM unterhaus: yeah, that's the rarely remarked downside of production moving out of country
11:58 AM CaptHindsight: now everything takes days and prices are high for most local supplies
11:58 AM unterhaus: I have heard msc is in a bit of trouble, mcmaster probably feeling problems from amazon
11:59 AM CaptHindsight: I only get tooling from MSC, they are also local but the local warehouse only carries 1/10th what they do 1 day away
12:01 PM CaptHindsight: seemed better when Enco was separate from MSC
12:01 PM roycroft: msc are liars
12:02 PM roycroft: when they shitcanned enco they sent me heaps of messages saying that i would be able to continue buying from them at the same prices as i had at enco
12:03 PM roycroft: but the exact same items i used to by from enco were 50%+ higher directly from msc
12:03 PM roycroft: i have never purchased from msc for that reason
12:05 PM CaptHindsight: you either pay lots more for quality made anything or wait and settle for Chinaco
12:05 PM roycroft: you're not reading carefully
12:05 PM roycroft: i said "the exact same items"
12:05 PM roycroft: it's not a matter of paying more for better quality
12:05 PM roycroft: it's a matter of paying 50%+ more for the exact same thing
12:06 PM CaptHindsight: I wasn't referring to MSC
12:06 PM CaptHindsight: but now there are more USA distis of cheap Chinese parts to cut down on shipping time
12:08 PM CaptHindsight: I'm also finding it more difficult to buy USA made components like lead screws and bearings
12:09 PM CaptHindsight: the suppliers have a list of distributors but the distributors don't have any technical people
12:10 PM CaptHindsight: so unless you have an exact part number it is difficult to find things
12:12 PM CaptHindsight: the local auto parts/bearing disti can't help me find spindle bearings
12:13 PM CaptHindsight: but they are able to order any bearing in the parts catalog for me
12:37 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_wk3q8jWcs
12:37 PM CaptHindsight: handheld CNC router
12:38 PM SpeedEvil: I've wondered about DIYing
12:40 PM CaptHindsight: I'm trying to find some video of it actually cutting
12:40 PM CaptHindsight: it's mostly yapping about
12:49 PM CaptHindsight: SpeedEvil: do you know what range of correction it has? + - 5mm?
12:49 PM SpeedEvil: I think it's more like 3-4cm
12:50 PM SpeedEvil: Total, not +-
12:51 PM Deejay: re
01:31 PM Loetmichel: btw: coworker Dr.Engineer looked over my shoulder this morning when i made coffee. "I like your approach: fill the filter to the top, press a bit and fill some more. Measuing spoons are for the weak! The coffee they make upstairs in the office is thin enough to read a newspaper thru it!"... half an hour later he came by my desk with a cup in hand: "I think i just found another state of matter
01:31 PM Loetmichel: between liquid and solid. That coffee of yours is GREAT stuff!" ;)
01:36 PM perry_j1987: crap
01:36 PM perry_j1987: im stupid
01:37 PM perry_j1987: just went to turn on coolant pump... and accidentally turned off spindle master power switch instead in the middle of a cut
01:37 PM perry_j1987: chipped teeth on the endmill before i could e-stop
01:37 PM perry_j1987: lol
01:39 PM Loetmichel: perry_j1987: how comes that your machine doesent stop if the spindle isnt at desired RPM?
01:39 PM perry_j1987: that would be too nice of a feature
01:40 PM Loetmichel: its usually a function of the VFD
01:40 PM perry_j1987: i have to figure out how to connect the vfd serial or something i think to get that feedback
01:40 PM Loetmichel: that has an ERROR output that triggers the e-stop
01:41 PM Loetmichel: and power loss sure is an triggerworthy error ;)
01:41 PM perry_j1987: i need to set that up ya
01:41 PM perry_j1987: usually i didnt think i'd be that stupid to turn it off myself though haha
01:42 PM perry_j1987: wondering if i could rig up something with the lathe to resharppen this endmill
01:42 PM perry_j1987: carbide 3 flute
01:42 PM perry_j1987: 1/2 in
01:42 PM Loetmichel: perry_j1987: the VFD should have an output/relais that can be chained in with the e-stop circuit
01:42 PM perry_j1987: 1/4 in
01:42 PM Loetmichel: you dont have to use the serial at all
01:43 PM Loetmichel: also helps with overload of the spindle and similar problems
01:43 PM perry_j1987: ok
01:47 PM miss0r: 'evening
01:57 PM CaptHindsight: perry_j1987: could be worse, I once forgot to change axis on a RPG and rammed a face mill into the part with a 10Hp spindle
01:58 PM perry_j1987: ouch
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: found out that the circuit breaker will trip for overloads like that
01:58 PM perry_j1987: i was just looking at this endmill geometry. i was kind of hoping i could regrind it but it looks a bit complicated with multiple angles on the end
01:59 PM CaptHindsight: could be worse, I once dropped a brand new 1" carbide endmill from chest height onto concrete
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: chipped one corner of one flute
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: $200 gone
02:01 PM perry_j1987: ouch
02:01 PM perry_j1987: so your saying dont sweat the loss of my 17 dollar endmill? :P
02:03 PM miss0r: hehe yeah
02:03 PM miss0r: don't sweat it :D
02:03 PM perry_j1987: it was my favorite endmill though :P
02:03 PM CaptHindsight: and never be in too much of a hurry
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: and never work when too tired
02:04 PM miss0r: regrind it to a scribe then.. :D
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: when the bad stuff happens
02:04 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight Hear hear
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: one the good side the 1" end mill was double ended
02:04 PM miss0r: That almost sounds too cheap to be true
02:05 PM perry_j1987: what are the odds i could regrind the end of this endmill
02:05 PM miss0r: I payed $265 for a 20mm endmill. It has a pretty long cutting length though, but it is absolutly not double ended. One other thing to note; this is of a cheaper brand name
02:05 PM miss0r: perry_j1987: What equipment do you have for grinding?
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: was 10-15 years ago
02:06 PM perry_j1987: bench grinder or rig up something with the lathe
02:07 PM miss0r: perry_j1987: If you want something good to come of it, I would not even give it a go without a surface grinder or a tool grinder
02:07 PM miss0r: in any case.. you'd need to have some proper fixtures for the bench grinder, to keep track of the angles.. If you can do that, you should be fine. But don't expect a factory fresh grind
02:09 PM perry_j1987: https://i.ibb.co/YdxgHvw/IMG-4227.jpg
02:10 PM perry_j1987: ya its beyond the tooling i have
02:10 PM miss0r: ... still loading the photo
02:11 PM miss0r: yup. Nice helix though.
02:12 PM Loetmichel: perry_j1987: thats harmless...
02:12 PM perry_j1987: it was working real nice in this brass
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/a/CQOneyC said endmill
02:13 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=13206&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- left original 6mm tungsten carbide bit. right after a couple hours milling slate... ;)
02:13 PM perry_j1987: lol what were you making out of slate
02:13 PM Loetmichel: award stands
02:14 PM perry_j1987: at least i can still use it for milling the sides of the brass
02:15 PM perry_j1987: https://www.shopmasterusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/NOWFOREVER-MANUAL-E-100.pdf so far not seeing any e-stop functions with this vfd
02:15 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/a/JhvGIln right side up this time
02:17 PM Loetmichel: perry_j1987: use the MA/MB/MC relais and chain it with your estop
02:18 PM Loetmichel: and programm the VFD to let it go in case of ANY error
02:18 PM Loetmichel: so you can only start the machine in linuxCNC if the VFD has switched ON the relais (reporting no error)
02:19 PM perry_j1987: interesting
02:19 PM perry_j1987: if i do get the modbus connection going then linuxcnc can see the spindle speed and such though right?
02:20 PM miss0r: Friday, I'll go pick this one up: https://imgur.com/a/olyJx9h
02:20 PM perry_j1987: are you delivering that to my place miss0r
02:20 PM perry_j1987: looks like a decent "grocery getter" :P
02:21 PM Loetmichel: perry_j1987: set parameter P0-025 to 1
02:21 PM miss0r: haha, not likely :) You don't often come across a Land Rover 101 forward control "radio body". (They are left hand drive)
02:21 PM Loetmichel: should do the trick
02:21 PM miss0r: perry_j1987: The idea is the misses'n I will convert it to a camper to take the kids of trips in :)
02:21 PM Loetmichel: yes, if you get the modbus running you can set AND see the spindle speed
02:21 PM gregcnc: that's cool
02:21 PM Loetmichel: and start/stop the VFD over it
02:22 PM miss0r: gregcnc: Yeah. I got(will get) a good price on it. Go google it for prices.. its insane
02:22 PM Loetmichel: never did it myself though, even if i have those USB->rs485 dongles in my pocket for about 6 years now ;)
02:22 PM gregcnc: watched a bunch of volvo C303 video not long ago
02:23 PM perry_j1987: ya i seem to remember needing some converter in order to get it hooked up
02:23 PM gregcnc: do you have to bulldoze your workshop to park it?
02:23 PM miss0r: gregcnc: Yeah.. Those are nice... but not as expensive :D
02:24 PM miss0r: haha... Nah. Its in complete working order this one. So I should be able to do the convertion under a tent in the yard. Most of the work will be done inside of it, so that is nice
02:25 PM perry_j1987: https://www.amazon.com/JBtek-Converter-Adapter-ch340T-Supported/dp/B00NKAJGZM/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=rs485&qid=1580328991&sr=8-4 i should just pick up one of these
02:25 PM perry_j1987: to get that vfd talking
02:26 PM gregcnc: no problem registering something like that?
02:27 PM miss0r: gregcnc: It is now. But as this is registered in denmark and have been for the past 12 years, its all good.
02:31 PM gregcnc: probably part of the reason price is high
02:32 PM miss0r: yeah... The price is high elsewhere. This is the only one of its kind in Denmark. And it wasn't even for sale :) I just poked the guy...
02:32 PM miss0r: The issue is; Even if I bought a rather expensive one for import, I would have a huge hassle getting it registered in denmark. plus we have some rather ridiculous import taxes on cars (180% the cars estimated value)
02:34 PM miss0r: 36" wheels
02:37 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: World's smallest printer... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb6YNzKBxW8 -- https://www.banggood.com/Mobile-Wireless-Mini-Handhold-Color-Inkjet-Printer-p-1625749.html
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: wow popular https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/princube-the-world-s-smallest-mobile-color-printer#/
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Faith-expiry-date-tij-Portable-inkjet_62366554169.html?spm=a2700.wholesale.maylikeexp.1.5698205eUHRE0F only ~$50 more and it uses an HP cartridge
02:44 PM Jymmm: The princube uses a HP cartridge
02:45 PM XXCoder: fiath expiry date heh
02:45 PM XXCoder: *faith
02:46 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: HP officejet 5746 print cartridge
02:47 PM gregcnc: if it can do tattoos you can retire tomorrow
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: thought about a tattoo printer
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: I should just do it
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: tattoo shops would rather replace artists...
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: no more late, sick, drama etc
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: I wonder if the RE'd the interface for the HP
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: HP is crazy paranoid secret about interface specs to TIJ cartridges
02:50 PM gregcnc: http://massagerobotics.com/
02:51 PM XXCoder: not surpised. clones. clones of clones. clones all way down, capt.
02:51 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: ah yes ich. i hate how hard for me to remember names
02:53 PM gregcnc: dang new international postal rates are crazy
02:54 PM XXCoder: in what way? I guess it went up
02:58 PM perry_j1987: there we go. got a rs485 adapter enroute
03:01 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: how so, I haven't looked
03:03 PM gregcnc: 17.25usd to uk or japan 8oz first class
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: oh well
03:05 PM gregcnc: yeah
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: have you found a good online shipping service for small packages worldwide (1-50lbs)?
03:06 PM gregcnc: oh crap i want reading it right
03:06 PM gregcnc: they made it so complicated
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: unless you do high volumes Fedex and UPS are really high
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: u-ship is pretty good for truck freight >150 lbs
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: but a medium priority box USPS is ~$70 to most places and holds ~9 x 11 x 5"
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: 20 lbs max
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: I haven't found a good service for 12-60lb parcels for international
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: parcelmonkey.com offers TrakPak with mixed reviews, it works through FEDEX
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: can be 21 days from USA to the EU
03:14 PM gregcnc: rowboat?
03:16 PM CaptHindsight: standby priority lowest
03:17 PM CaptHindsight: ~30 days is typical ocean freight time
03:40 PM jdh: any good eu forward-to-US sites?
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: jdh: somebody just sent me a screenshot of UPS rates 1/2 what I get here, I'm asking them for the web address
03:42 PM jdh: unrelated.
03:42 PM jdh: eu prices are 1/2 US, but they won't ship to US anymore
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: then what exactly are you looking for?
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: ah
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: does Polamer handle EU to USA?
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: jdh: try https://www.parcelmonkey.com/international-shipping
03:52 PM jdh: a shipping forwarder
03:52 PM CaptHindsight: freight? on pallets or crates > 70Kg?
03:54 PM jdh: nah, 5-10kg
03:54 PM jdh: in a box
03:55 PM jdh: though I guess if it is shipped to an EU place, it would get VAT so somewhat less cheap
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: prices seem all over the place using those services
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: same package to USA from Poland, France or Hungary varied by >500 Euros
03:59 PM nvz: well I got enough materials left over here to be a decent little starter kit for a very small machine.. 4 v-groove bearings, 4 din rail pieces (2x19in, 2x16in), 12ft 15mm timing belt and two pulleys 32 teeth 3mm pitch, a parport board and cable, 19in of 10mm drag chain and several scraps of 3/4in baltic birch furniture grade plywood largest is like 33.5x14in
04:00 PM nvz: can either keep em as spare parts, build another small machine, or sell it all to someone.. idk
04:05 PM nvz: might be enough with a few nema17 motors, extruder, and a z-axis kit to build a small 3d printer
04:05 PM nvz: like a 12x12x12in kinda deal
04:06 PM nvz: really I'm only doing inventory of the leftovers cause I keep walking around in circles trying to find the f'n z-axis drag chain and don't see it anywhere
04:06 PM nvz: trying not to drive myself crazy
04:10 PM * nvz grumbles
04:10 PM nvz: I found the damn spare length of it, but can't find it anywhere
04:21 PM Tom_L: ebay keeps it in stock
04:44 PM Deejay: gn8
07:20 PM perry_j1987: ah bin full of parts done
07:20 PM perry_j1987: feels good
07:28 PM perry_j1987: what do you guys use to cut brass bar stock to lengths before machining
07:33 PM CaptHindsight: bandsaw
07:42 PM perry_j1987: https://www.tormach.com/af50-autofeed-bandsaw/ mmm
07:44 PM CaptHindsight: Priced under $5,500
08:41 PM perry_j1987: i want to design my first pallet
08:43 PM perry_j1987: something small to dip toes in 5 to 10 parts
08:55 PM perry_j1987: mitee-bite clamps sure seem expesnive for what they are
09:04 PM Tom_L: there are probably cheaper brands
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbi3n258KtY live stream of the hospital in 14 days
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: miss0r: ^^
09:13 PM perry_j1987: been thinking of making some brass hex stock with holes and then making jig for the lathe to turn cap head screws eccentric
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: most of the slabs are already in!
09:15 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0o1_JcKZeQ time lapse
09:15 PM perry_j1987: they're making special hospital for some outbreak?
09:16 PM CaptHindsight: yes
09:16 PM CaptHindsight: in 14 days
09:17 PM perry_j1987: zombie outbreak over there eh
09:18 PM CaptHindsight: snake virus jumped in November to homo sapiens
