12:39 AM CaptHindsight: nvz: cnc for working on wood?
12:51 AM Elmo40: it might work on thin AL. the carriage rails are on the light side, though. there will be deflection with them.
12:57 AM CaptHindsight: I thought I saw DIN rail as linear bearings but maybe I was mistaken
12:58 AM CaptHindsight: http://debian.boxathome.net:7268/cnc/20200127_101049.jpg
01:09 AM Deejay: moin
01:21 AM Jymmm: Deejay: Hola!
01:25 AM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: snow, fire, cold, plagues, whats new?
01:26 AM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: You dont wanna know
01:26 AM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: how ya doin?
05:02 AM jthornton: morning
05:05 AM XXCoder: hey jt
05:05 AM XXCoder: did you see my test cut laser engraver?
05:19 AM jthornton: no
05:19 AM XXCoder: ok https://imgur.com/a/oTLZOUd https://imgur.com/a/byeVIgu
05:19 AM XXCoder: what you think
05:19 AM jthornton: looks like stars
05:20 AM XXCoder: yeah. nothing complex, just testing if machine can cut cardboard
05:20 AM XXCoder: it can, at 150 mm/m and 100% laser power
05:28 AM XXCoder: spirl was because I was curious
05:28 AM XXCoder: worked fine. I then tested same on pine wood. 2mm deep cut apparently
05:28 AM XXCoder: well maybe 1.5mm
05:40 AM jthornton: how do you program it?
05:41 AM XXCoder: laserweb supports svg apparently
05:43 AM XXCoder: it can also make gcode from pictures
06:21 AM Tom_L: morning
06:21 AM XXCoder: hey
06:22 AM jthornton: did you get the laser to vary the power level?
06:23 AM XXCoder: yp proper pwm laser
06:23 AM XXCoder: s1m3 is barely on at all
06:23 AM XXCoder: s1000m3 full on
09:00 AM jymmmm: G'morning
09:01 AM Tom_L: g'day
09:08 AM justanotheruser is now known as FeudalBear
10:05 AM beachbumpete1: Mornin
10:08 AM Tom_L: hey pete
10:09 AM Loetmichel: every time i hear pete i hear "ein hoooch auf die wissenschaft!"
10:09 AM Loetmichel: maan, that comic is an earworm ;)
10:09 AM Loetmichel: comic series
10:11 AM beachbumpete1: Hey Tom_L
10:11 AM beachbumpete1: Loetmichel ? must be a German thing?
10:12 AM Loetmichel: indeed
10:12 AM Loetmichel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5z18bxoCzg
10:12 AM Loetmichel: that blue alien is called PETE
10:12 AM Loetmichel: s/comic/caroon
10:12 AM Loetmichel: +t
10:19 AM beachbumpete1: interesting
12:34 PM perry_j1987: hi guys
12:46 PM Vq: Hi Perry
01:04 PM perry_j1987: what cam are you guys using for simultaneous 4th axis work
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: Master CAM and NX CAM, some here use the free one by autocad, forget the name
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: fusion360 IIRC
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: perry_j1987: ^^
01:16 PM perry_j1987: fusion360 doesnt do much 4th axis
01:16 PM CaptHindsight: I never used it myself
01:17 PM CaptHindsight: there isn't any open CAM over 3 axis that I'm aware of
01:17 PM CaptHindsight: I've considered writing some
01:18 PM CaptHindsight: there was a dev that was working on CAM for FreeCAD but unexpectedly passed away
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: not sure where FreeCAD is today on that
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: beachbumpete1: any good news on your spindle bearings?
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: Was ist mit den drei Augen?
01:25 PM nvz: CaptHindsight: yes its din rail
01:41 PM gloops: i thought f360 did 4 axis - the premium one
01:42 PM gloops: gcoderipper does wrapping
01:42 PM gloops: very spartan UI though, no previews or anything
02:01 PM ziper: is marking blue water soluble?
02:02 PM ziper: i'm wet sanding sometime and i'm looking for something to show the low spots
02:37 PM andypugh: You mean Dykem or Stuarts?
02:37 PM andypugh: (ie the scribing paint, or the contact testing blue?)
02:37 PM andypugh: Not that it matters, as neither are water soluble.
02:39 PM Tom_L: one dries and the other doesn't as much
02:49 PM ziper: scribing, i guess
02:51 PM andypugh: That’s not water soluble as far as I know.
02:51 PM andypugh: I haven’t used it much.
02:51 PM andypugh: But it smells of organic solvents.
02:51 PM gregcnc: dykem layout needs alcohol
02:51 PM gregcnc: well alcohol works
02:53 PM FeudalBear is now known as justanotheruser
03:12 PM * JT-Shop attempts to get something done...
03:16 PM gloops: quick paint technique with sticky vinyl https://ibb.co/2q6Ybmd
03:20 PM XXCoder: for some reason that site shows picture as huge
03:20 PM XXCoder: show image and its more reasonably sized heh
03:21 PM gloops: ahh, it fits my window about right, not sure whats happening there
03:21 PM XXCoder: unno probably due to script not running
03:21 PM XXCoder: it was
03:52 PM Deejay: gn8
04:45 PM _unreal_: ve7it, hi
04:46 PM _unreal_: ve7it, question for you...? do I need a center tap on the transformer??? I dont believe that transformer is center tapped
04:47 PM ve7it: you need a center tap or 2 secondary windings to make a split supply
04:47 PM _unreal_: it has two secondarys
04:48 PM _unreal_: two primaries and two secondaries
04:48 PM _unreal_: https://www.ebay.com/itm/500VA-20V-12-5A-20V-12-5A-40V-CT-Power-Transformer-Antek-AN-5220/371662652156?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
04:50 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I'm going to go dbl check but I think that picture from that link is a little ifferent from what I have
04:51 PM ve7it: I am trying to find you a circuit diagram
04:51 PM _unreal_: going to send the seller a message :) that photo shows the transormer with a center tap.
04:51 PM CaptHindsight: Antek, they make unregulated power supplies as well
04:51 PM _unreal_: mine does not
04:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.antekinc.com/power-supplies/
04:52 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.antekinc.com/transformers/ you might find more info on the transformer here
04:59 PM ve7it: https://www.powertronix.com/userfiles/kcfinder/images/Linear-Power-Supplies-4.jpg
05:00 PM ve7it: is basically what you are building... your 2 windings on the primary will need to be paralleled in the right phase configuration to use 120VAC or in series for 240VAC
05:01 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I just sent the seller a message about the tranformer ;) the description doesnt seem to mention center tapped or not. but it has a photo OF a center tapped transformer.
05:02 PM ve7it: _unreal_, how many wires coming out? 8?, 7? 6? 5?
05:02 PM _unreal_: 4 secondary 4 primary
05:02 PM ve7it: perfect
05:02 PM _unreal_: two coils
05:02 PM ve7it: most adaptable to many configs
05:02 PM _unreal_: Outputs 2x
05:02 PM _unreal_: Power 500VA
05:02 PM _unreal_: Output Voltage Current
05:02 PM _unreal_: 20V 12.5A 20V 12.5A
05:03 PM unterhaus: does a Mint install iso nominally have an option to install? Or do I have to start mint from a usb?
05:04 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I'm putting the transformer into a small metal enclosure
05:04 PM unterhaus: all I see is oem install
05:05 PM ve7it: _unreal_, the manufacturer should have a datasheet on that transformer showing the correct color scheme for wiring, or you can figure it out
05:05 PM _unreal_: ve7it, kind of like this one https://images.globalindustrial.com/images/275x275/BDI_CU-883.jpg
05:06 PM _unreal_: o
05:06 PM _unreal_: ok
05:06 PM _unreal_: lets see if I can stay away tonight
05:06 PM _unreal_: last night 7pm I sat down to get a part milling process started. my daughter woke me up at 11:30 with daddy I'm hungry. I'm like WTF have you been doing for the past 3 hours and why didnt you wake me
05:07 PM _unreal_: I'm very certain she was gaming on her phone
05:07 PM ve7it: _unreal_, that should work... just make sure there is enough room for 2 big filter caps, a fuse and a bridge rectifier
05:08 PM _unreal_: ve7it, the box is just going to house the tranformer. any other hardware will be inside the main box
05:08 PM ve7it: ok... it could just mount inside the main box...
05:09 PM unterhaus: okay, I guess my usb drive is not set up right somehow
05:09 PM _unreal_: it could but I'd be cramped for space. with the heat sink etc...
05:16 PM unterhaus: need to have a partition less than 4gb because of gigabyte motherboard poorly written bios
05:36 PM _unreal_: it wouldnt be the first time I got free stuff from an ebay seller for fucking up :)
05:45 PM _unreal_: ve7it, will be interesting to see what happends. because the seller clearly does not list the tranformer as having or NOT having a center tap AND has a center tapped one posted.
05:47 PM _unreal_: milling acrylic right now
05:58 PM unterhaus: I should be able to shrink the partition on my usb drive to just the ISO size, correct?
06:10 PM unterhaus: I misused Rufus somehow, installing mint now. Just too set in my ways to use debian
06:20 PM _unreal_: unterhaus, more often then not its wiser to follow the crowd
06:22 PM _unreal_: P....U.... acrylic sticks to mill
06:23 PM unterhaus: yeah, I'm not a big fan of machining acrylic. The best part is when you spend a few hours on a piece and then it cracks
06:23 PM _unreal_: I hit the wrong button a few min ago because my daughter kept entering the room DADDY DADDY DADDY DADDY now LOOK WHAT I drew...
06:24 PM unterhaus: I have made quite a few ultrasonic wedges
06:24 PM _unreal_: ?
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus: acrylic glue to the rescue
06:25 PM _unreal_: I dont follow
06:28 PM Jymmm: _unreal_: Well, what did she draw?
06:29 PM _unreal_: a land scape of a dam
06:29 PM unterhaus: I don't remember what I did about the cracked ones. That was while I was a grad student
06:29 PM _unreal_: with a lake
06:29 PM unterhaus: I might have just used them
06:30 PM _unreal_: I am VERY VERY glad I did a finish pass
06:30 PM _unreal_: taking .01" off
06:31 PM _unreal_: 4min and the first part is done.
06:32 PM _unreal_: I'm building outer mount/covers for my large pulleys and lead screws
06:32 PM Tom_L: belt guards?
06:33 PM Tom_L: i made mine from steel
06:33 PM Jymmm: I made mine from pants
06:33 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, combo belt gard/bearing support
06:33 PM * Tom_L throws a snowball at Jymmm
06:34 PM * _unreal_ throws a coconut at Tom_L and Jymmm
06:34 PM unterhaus: mcmaster shipping has gone up quite a bit
06:34 PM unterhaus: still overnight to here, so I should get over it
06:34 PM * Jymmm makes pina coladas
06:34 PM Tom_L: shipping in general has gone up. it's not their fault
06:34 PM _unreal_: OH FUCK YOU and other finish pass on the tapered edge? I thought I got rid of that
06:35 PM Tom_L: well guess what
06:35 PM _unreal_: Jymmm, enjoy
06:35 PM * jthornton wanders upstairs
06:39 PM unterhaus: I bought a piece of mic6 to mount an encoder to my lathe
06:40 PM unterhaus: I was reading how other people have mounted theirs, and it was pretty useless
06:41 PM unterhaus: I had sticker shock when I went to buy set screws at the hardware store. Most of $1 apiece
06:41 PM Tom_L: maybe you're going to the wrong place
06:42 PM unterhaus: later I realized that fastenall probably had a decent price
06:42 PM Tom_L: i can get 3-4 for the same price i can get a box of 100
06:42 PM Tom_L: my local fastener guy is awesome
06:42 PM _unreal_: hehe just told my daughter to go take a shower
06:42 PM _unreal_: more of a "LOVE YOU NOW GO AWAY"
06:42 PM _unreal_: hehe
06:43 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:43 PM unterhaus: I doubt I will ever get to know anyone at the fastenall store, which is all we got
06:43 PM Tom_L: i don't go there unless i have to
06:43 PM Tom_L: and ACE is last on the list
06:44 PM unterhaus: there used to be an industrial supply where you talked to a guy through a window
06:44 PM unterhaus: It was in a house.
06:45 PM unterhaus: still there. Calling it a house might be too kind
06:46 PM unterhaus: fastenall was definitely a step up, previously we had ace, lowe's, HD, and tractor supply
06:46 PM unterhaus: mcmaster gets here the next day, so I usually just bought there. They have switched to Chinese parts though
06:48 PM Tom_L: we've got all those and used to have MSC
06:48 PM Tom_L: MTC? i forget
06:49 PM Tom_L: but this is a big machining town
06:49 PM unterhaus: we used to have another hardware store that could be pretty good, don't remember their fasteners
06:49 PM unterhaus: kids didn't want to keep the store running and sold out to the university. Which flattened the place
06:53 PM _unreal_: unterhaus, typical $$$ PAYDAY I'm never workinga gain
06:56 PM _unreal_: unterhaus, my next task, I need to get the idlers mounted on my Y on my big cnc
06:56 PM _unreal_: once I do that
06:56 PM Tom_L: pics
06:56 PM _unreal_: I can finally solve how large my belt is so I can order it FINALLY
06:57 PM Tom_L: run a string around them
06:57 PM _unreal_: it will be nice to have the +/- sides of Y linked
06:57 PM _unreal_: right but I dont have them setup yet
06:57 PM _unreal_: and I dont feel like modling it in cad
06:57 PM _unreal_: to get the same result for something that I cant cut
06:57 PM _unreal_: rather just spend the hours in hands on fab
06:59 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I got some half inch tinted dark ish acrylic... still kicking my self. I took ONE @#$%#@$# WINDOW. I could have grabbed duzzens and much larger then the one I grabbed
07:00 PM _unreal_: SOO mad at my sself for tking one and walking away
07:08 PM _unreal_: it didnt even dawn on me till I got home took the one I had inside sat down next to the project sand said WTF.... DID I JUST DO!!!!!
07:12 PM _unreal_: nvz, you live?
07:16 PM _unreal_: sigh
07:17 PM Tom_L: quiet time..
07:18 PM _unreal_: and you just messed it up
07:18 PM _unreal_: milling my second/final Y pulley support cover
07:54 PM _unreal_: omg. I expected someone to say something
07:55 PM _unreal_: ve7it, ether I'll build that adapter schematic OR with luck maybe they'll send me an other psu
08:02 PM skunkworks: https://youtu.be/Ob4K4m2Zmr8
