01:39 AM elmo40: because he lives in a tropical climat and frogs are a plenty... along with coconuts. seemed like the correct thing to do.
04:14 AM XXCoder: boo
04:27 AM Deejay: moin
04:54 AM jthornton: niebubf
04:54 AM XXCoder: good morning, pre-coffee jthornton
04:54 AM sensille: good enough for a password
04:55 AM Tom_L: morning
04:55 AM XXCoder: morning
04:55 AM jthornton: ah first sip
04:55 AM Tom_L: vodka????
04:55 AM Tom_L: :)
05:24 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-Uu8bRKmds
05:25 AM XXCoder: crash test for porous hgraphite air bearing spindle
07:39 AM jymmmm: Good morning folks!
07:39 AM XXCoder: yo
07:39 AM tiwake: oi
07:53 AM beachbumpete1: good morning
08:53 AM elmo40: moo
08:53 AM jymmmm: woof
08:54 AM elmo40: XXCoder, that is a sweet looking spindle!
08:55 AM SpeedEvil: $1/ m/1.
09:00 AM Deejay: re
11:21 AM nvz: well the rest of the crap I ordered came in today.. this parallel port board looks like its nothing more than a breakout board
01:30 PM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
01:50 PM net|: got sound and graphics working now :) http://www.netpipe.ca/apps/8086tiny/8086tiny.html
03:16 PM nvz: so my cousin has a Gateway G6-333 thats a Pentium 2 333mhz w/ probably like 64MB ram I'd guess.. I saw the images you folk had were fairly old like wheezy or such.. so a PII should suffice?
03:16 PM nvz: I wanna get a better one but I got all my crap here and ready to put my machine together, just dont have a machine with a parport for testing
03:53 PM ChanServ changed topic of #linuxcnc to: LinuxCNC is a linux-based open-source CNC control. | Latest release: 2.7.15 | http://www.linuxcnc.org | Register with freenode before speaking
03:58 PM Deejay: gn8
04:11 PM _unreal_: ve7it, sup
04:13 PM _unreal_: I just got my threaded rod and bearings and a few other parts so this weekend I can get my measurments and have the machine company turn down my rods monday
04:54 PM Connor: Having some funky stuff going on with a setup. It's on a parport. We've been getting a few random limit switch trips.. ended up shielding those.. but, still have one happen every so often.. So fast, that the |<-- marks on the GUI doesn't even trigger. Just the HAL message.
04:55 PM Connor: In addition to this, we just noticed that once LinuxCNC starts up, the Y axis SLOWLY creeps.
04:55 PM Connor: Even after we close LinuxCNC.
04:55 PM Connor: Only way to get it to stop is to reboot the computer.
05:26 PM jdh: steppers?
05:29 PM Connor: Yea, Steppers, not servo.
05:39 PM jdh: noise from the drivers triggering the drivers?
05:43 PM elmo40: sounds like noise
05:43 PM elmo40: maybe try a TL smoother?
05:45 PM XXCoder: elmo40: yeah
05:49 PM jdh: are you using 'real' stepper drivers?
05:55 PM Connor: Yes. True Keling Steppers. This is a laser cutter.
05:56 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:56 PM Connor: We had no issues with MESA, but, had to switch out to parport + C10 BOB because of in-ability to do raster based engraving.
05:56 PM jdh: at least the laser doesn't come on just randomly
05:56 PM Connor: Broke my heart.
05:56 PM Connor: No, Enable/Disable Signal, and a PWM input are needed for that. :/
05:57 PM jdh: use a disable on the drives?
05:58 PM jdh: keling drives seem to range from good to low end junk. Still not typical 3dprinter class junk though
05:59 PM jdh: k40 kinda laser? I assume there is some software thing you have that only works with p-port?
06:02 PM XXCoder: connor funny thing, I boufght a laser engraver, turns out they cheaped out and removed pwm for laser
06:02 PM XXCoder: complained to them and got partial refund, bought new board. its still on way
06:03 PM elmo40: different board ?
06:03 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:03 PM Connor: This one is higher end.. $3k-4kl 100watt
06:03 PM XXCoder: same type but with laser pwm still intact
06:03 PM elmo40: from where?
06:03 PM XXCoder: china
06:03 PM XXCoder: mines $100 one lol
06:04 PM Connor: Yea, we ditched the controller in favor of Open Source LinuxCNC :)
06:04 PM XXCoder: thats good. i just didnt want to pay another 50-100 bucks for such a cheap machine lol
06:04 PM XXCoder: its grbl type
06:05 PM XXCoder: orginial grbl on it was hacked to make work on shitty board, when I flashed it with standard grbl it couldnt turn laser off
06:22 PM elmo40: that sounds weird
06:22 PM elmo40: why fuck with the board?
06:22 PM elmo40: *why did they
06:22 PM XXCoder: save 5 cents probably
06:22 PM XXCoder: removed pwm socket
06:22 PM XXCoder: and probably some pwm chips etc off it didnt look like anything missing but who knows
06:22 PM jdh: why did you flash/destroy their board?
06:22 PM XXCoder: laserweb dont work with old grbl
06:22 PM jdh: is this a blu-ray laser on a carriage made from dvd drive parts?
06:22 PM XXCoder: no
06:22 PM XXCoder: its 2040 extrusion frame with arylic parts
06:22 PM jdh: ah, better than the cheap ones I saw
06:22 PM XXCoder: steppers, laser diode thats bit more than dvd laser
06:22 PM jdh: https://raleigh.craigslist.org/tls/d/maysville-hardinge-chnc-lathe/7045661822.html
06:22 PM XXCoder: yeah thats why I got it :) a step above dvd machines
06:22 PM jdh: nice price. too bad no room
06:22 PM XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Desktop-Laser-Engraving-Machine-DIY-Marking-Printer-Engraver-Cutting-2000mW/293282771022
06:24 PM XXCoder: looks decent
06:24 PM XXCoder: what ya think jdh
06:25 PM jdh: it is what it is.
06:25 PM XXCoder: nice non-answer lol
06:25 PM jdh: I have no basis for knowing
06:26 PM jdh: got a yag engraver at work. has been churning out parts for like 7 years with no problems
06:27 PM jdh: lately it started marking the parts with the right hand sides of the last few characters illegible
06:27 PM XXCoder: for really cheapo machine its quite nice
06:27 PM XXCoder: too bad its gimped by board thats too cheap to work with stock grbl.
06:28 PM jdh: killing our process, so we fly the laser guy out. he looks at it and says "let's try this first". reaches in, wiggles around. takes his hand out, button everything back up, all is perfect again
06:28 PM Connor: WTF?
06:29 PM Tom_L: i bet he charged good for that wiggle too
06:29 PM jdh: sure. worth every penny
06:29 PM XXCoder: tom I rememember that old story. morale was that knowledge is worth money
06:29 PM jdh: beam spreader lens had worked loose
06:30 PM jdh: so, he spent the rest of the morning telling us about how everything worked, etc.
06:30 PM Tom_L: that was good of him
06:31 PM XXCoder: indeed. not one of those who keep secrets. worse, one who sabotages so evenually he need to return and get paid again
06:31 PM XXCoder: worth gold
06:31 PM jdh: it burns a serial number on the part. I have some downstream machines that have to read that number.
06:34 PM jdh: epson scara robot & the laser. they have marked about 2m parts since install and this was the first problem.
07:06 PM XXCoder: yeah high relible if it could do 2m
07:25 PM skunkworks: I am up to 10 virtual machines on this poor laptop.. I think I need intervention...
07:26 PM XXCoder: careful you might get wrong kind of intervention team
07:26 PM XXCoder: like drugs one
07:29 PM skunkworks: maybe!
07:30 PM skunkworks: https://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/forum/digital-machinist/1845471-calibrating-axis-s/page2
07:39 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: running concurrently?
07:40 PM XXCoder: cocurrently would need serious server
07:41 PM Jymmm: We used to run 8 VM's
07:43 PM skunkworks: no..
07:43 PM skunkworks: just trying some windows server upgrades to see what works..
07:43 PM skunkworks: hey - it workes at 2012 - clone and see if we can jump to 2019
07:44 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: windows servers?! why? for what?
07:44 PM skunkworks: Jymmm: work.. We use a windows based accounting software.
07:44 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: you poor bastard
07:45 PM skunkworks: I know right? Only windows server we have..
07:45 PM skunkworks: Jymmm: ever use proxmox?
07:47 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: No, took a quick look but dont see what it's license is
07:50 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: Ok, a support license.
07:50 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: Do you like it?
07:51 PM skunkworks: I don't know yet.. Looking for a vmware-like solution.
07:51 PM skunkworks: It looks promising
07:51 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: YOu mean esxi like?
07:53 PM Jymmm: skunkworks: I use virtualbox and ran away from vmware after they fucked me
07:55 PM skunkworks: I have used virtual box too.. Currently using kvm/virtmanager/qemu.
07:55 PM skunkworks: more fiddly but pretty powerful
07:55 PM skunkworks: that is what proxmox uses also
07:55 PM skunkworks: want something that does replication/cloning over a bunch of nodes
07:56 PM skunkworks: doesn't have to be high availability but atleast easy to swap server
07:56 PM skunkworks: hey - the update to 2019 worked! wow
07:57 PM skunkworks: I think this might be the first time an in-place upgrade worked for me.
07:58 PM jymmmm: you mean like a fall over in case of failure?
07:58 PM skunkworks: yes
07:58 PM jymmmm: live?
07:59 PM skunkworks: eh - that would be nice.. but down for 15 minutes would be fine also
07:59 PM skunkworks: or even an hour
07:59 PM jymmmm: ok how much data can you lose? Like a hour? 8 hours?
08:02 PM skunkworks: currently we only backup the db 2 times a day
08:02 PM skunkworks: So better than that...
08:03 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: We had tandem hardware that mirrored each other. When one went down, the other took over
08:03 PM skunkworks: That is kinda what we think we can do with proxmox.. but not 100% sure...
08:03 PM skunkworks: yet
08:04 PM skunkworks: only played with it for a few days...
08:04 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: Best if both are the EXACT same hardware, including BIOS/CMOS versions
08:06 PM skunkworks: Well - we currently have 2 systems that would fit the bill. waiting on a disk controller so we don't have to use the dell raid
08:10 PM jymmmm: sounds good
08:13 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: 2012, but it's mention using ZFS, which isn't a bad thing at all... https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/hot-standby-server.10278/
08:15 PM skunkworks: right - my first time playing with zfs...
08:15 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: if you play aorunf with NAS4FREE it uses ZFS
08:16 PM skunkworks: I remember that - it's based on freebsd?
08:16 PM jymmmm: yeah... https://www.xigmanas.com/
08:16 PM jymmmm: also a channel here on freenode
08:16 PM skunkworks: proxmox has an unofficial channel too...
08:16 PM skunkworks: don't know how good it is yet
08:17 PM jymmmm: #xigmanas
08:17 PM jymmmm: ZFS has some very nice cloning and other features as a file system
08:24 PM skunkworks: right...
08:24 PM skunkworks: it really is amazing what is out there now
08:50 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: Nas4free was originally "FreeNas", and has used ZFS since the very beginning. I've been using N4F for many years, not one data loss even after replacing dead mobo, dead PS, and dead hdd
08:51 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: I'm booting it off a MicroSD card in a USB adapter.
08:52 PM skunkworks: i had played with freenas a long time ago
09:01 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: There are (or were) "two" FreeNAS... the current one #freenas is a different project strung off from the original
10:45 PM nvz: well we got started on building our first cnc today. we should have it up and running by next weekend
10:46 PM XXCoder: nice
10:46 PM XXCoder: what kind of machine?
10:46 PM nvz: we're building a 1220x1220x500mm workable area machine with a spindle and 7W laser
10:46 PM nvz: out of baltic birch plywood
10:47 PM nvz: all we got done today was making a cart for it to sit on
10:47 PM XXCoder: nice so basically supersized router
10:47 PM XXCoder: that can engraves
10:47 PM nvz: yeah..
10:47 PM XXCoder: *can laser stuff also
10:48 PM nvz: yeah I was gonna center the spindle and set the laser to one side and have a vac pipe come down the other side
10:49 PM nvz: I'm about 3min away from finishing rendering a time-lapsed video of todays efforts
10:50 PM nvz: our laser should be here tomorrow and our timing belt and pulleys and two more rails on monday.. and we still gotta get a computer to run it.. but got everything else now
10:51 PM XXCoder: :)
10:53 PM nvz: my cousin has a Gateway G6-333 hes gonna give us.. should be enough.. but I wanna get a better one asap, cause I'd like to be able to do more than the bare minimum on the machine
10:53 PM nvz: thats a damn PII 333mhz which is really old..
10:53 PM nvz: probably only like 64MB ram in it
10:53 PM XXCoder: can always go raspberry pi 4
10:53 PM Wolf__: good laser safety glasses may be a good idea
10:53 PM XXCoder: theres linuxcnc for it now
10:53 PM nvz: yeah we already got the safety glasses they came week or so ago
10:54 PM Wolf__: diode lasers are nasty vs eye balls
10:54 PM nvz: in time as we get a better laser and such I'd like to have like tinted plexiglass sheild around it
10:55 PM infornography: raspberry pi 4 + linuxcnc? that excites me
10:55 PM Wolf__: how much was the 7w
10:55 PM XXCoder: info yeah me too but havent read up how to install and all that
10:56 PM Wolf__: I have something setup with a 2.5w and wish I had a bit more juice
10:58 PM nvz: http://nvz.farted.net/cnccart.mp4 12x or so time-lapse video of the hour work we did tonight :D
11:23 PM Loetmichel: mornin'. Anybody has a link for a (touch) Display thats about 7" and has at least 1366*768 resolution? Preferably with HDMI in and a source that delivers to germany? $me wants to "upgrade" an old "pocket notebook" to a Pi4 and new display... -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16336&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
11:24 PM XXCoder: plenty of 1024 600 ines but that res dunno
11:24 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: i noticed
11:24 PM Loetmichel: bit low rezzed for a notebook though ;)
11:25 PM XXCoder: yah
11:38 PM nvz: Loetmichel: the smaller screens with higher resolution are usually ridiculously expensive and geared toward other markets
11:39 PM nvz: see the Desview R7 for example.. its loaded with features for digital photography..
11:40 PM nvz: has a 1920x1200 touchscreen though.. but you'll pay double what a decent 10in would cost you
11:40 PM nvz: touchscreens for computers that are high res start at around 10 inches
11:41 PM nvz: https://www.elecrow.com/10-1-inch-1920x1080-resolution-hdmi-vga-ips-ps3-ps4-gaming-screen-with-build-in-speakers-for-raspberry-pi-b-2b-3b-xbox-windows-7-8-10.html
11:41 PM Loetmichel: nvz: i have contemplated to buy a 7" tablet PC with intel core and mounting it into that shell
11:42 PM Loetmichel: but that wasnt the intention, i want connectivity
11:43 PM Loetmichel: nice find the elcrow display
11:44 PM Loetmichel: but its 10.1"
11:44 PM Loetmichel: way to big for that green notebook
11:45 PM Loetmichel: i can maybe with a bit of grinding/milling fit an 8" in that frame. 10": no chance
11:46 PM nvz: https://www.wish.com/product/59a67f63491fa17df9e6c527
11:47 PM nvz: https://www.wish.com/product/59a67f63491fa17df9e6c527?hide_login_modal=true
11:47 PM nvz: rather to avoid the annoying popup
11:47 PM nvz: its a 3.5in touchscreen that says it goes up to 1080p
11:48 PM nvz: I personally wouldn't touch it.. I don't know/trust that site and it sounds too cheap
11:48 PM Loetmichel: nvz: please take a look at the link in my question
11:48 PM Loetmichel: i want to refurbish an old "pocket notebook" with new electronics and display
11:49 PM Loetmichel: 3.5" is WAY to small ;)
