02:18 AM Deejay: moin
06:27 AM JT-Mobile: morning
06:28 AM XXCoder: yo
06:59 AM Tom_L: morning
07:00 AM JT-Mobile: morning
07:00 AM JT-Mobile: you getting any snow?
07:00 AM XXCoder: pre-morning
07:02 AM sensille: after-noon
07:05 AM Tom_L: no
07:05 AM Tom_L: cold is coming tomorrow
07:06 AM JT-Mobile: yea same here, looks yucky for the drive home
07:13 AM Tom_L: 34°F
07:14 AM Tom_L: Hi 68, Lo 27
07:15 AM JT-Mobile: weather.gov is broken here lol
08:26 AM gregcnc: it looks like 5 months of winter is quite likely this year
08:37 AM elmo40: Winter did arrive a little early this year.
08:37 AM XXCoder: entire month early here
08:37 AM elmo40: and the heavy Winter was 3 years ago... we are due again.
08:43 AM jymmmm: Good morning folks
09:33 AM elmo40: moo
09:33 AM jymmmm: oink
11:12 AM _unreal_: There got 2 of the threaded rods corrected on my daughters cnc machine I'm building
11:12 AM _unreal_: I used home depot threaded rod/coupler nuts
11:12 AM _unreal_: and they had sooooooo much backlash
11:13 AM _unreal_: just installed some nice stainless one's
11:13 AM _unreal_: much better
11:13 AM _unreal_: 1/4-20
11:13 AM _unreal_: been running and lubing to work the thread in before it tries to gall
12:19 PM gregcnc: anti-seize instead of grease on those?
12:23 PM sync: andypugh: running a TDI without the T is suprisingly loud
12:23 PM sync: I guess the high pressures cause high pressures at exhaust
12:26 PM andypugh: Well, the turbo chops up the sound waves very small.
12:38 PM sync: meh, it exchanges energy instead of chopping it
12:48 PM jymmmm: anti-seize.. on???
02:12 PM roycroft: so does anyone else here use freecad on a mac?
02:13 PM roycroft: i'm trying to use 0.18, and it crashes on my macbook pro as soon as i try to open a workbench
02:13 PM roycroft: on my imac it runs for a while but crashes randomly - there seems to be no pattern to what causes the crashing
02:14 PM roycroft: i'd hate to have to install a linux vm just to use it - that's a big part of the reason i'm trying to move away from using solidworks
02:14 PM Tom_L: does it have an AppImage runtime for mac?
02:15 PM roycroft: i think they compile it natively for mac os
02:16 PM andypugh: roycroft: If it makes you feel any better, Fusion360 crashes randomly on the Mac too.
02:16 PM roycroft: well fusion360 is useless anyway, so that doesn't matter to me :)
02:16 PM andypugh: ?
02:17 PM andypugh: In what way is it useless? I can understand many objections to it, but apart from that it seems rather effective.
02:17 PM roycroft: autodesk's license and requirement that it calls home occasionaly render it useless
02:17 PM Tom_L: is it like a parking meter where you have to keep feeding it?
02:17 PM andypugh: I disagree. That makes it annoyingly and morally suspect. But apart from that it is useful.
02:18 PM roycroft: but let's not debate that today :)
02:18 PM roycroft: it just refuses to run if it's not been able to call home for a while
02:18 PM roycroft: which it did to me once, when i had no internet connectivity and could not call home
02:19 PM roycroft: thus my decree that it is useless
02:19 PM roycroft: but i'll modify that and say it's useless to me
02:19 PM miss0r: Unimaginable mess to replace the 94 disk springs on a BT50 drawbar on a machine that only does cast iron.
02:19 PM roycroft: none of this addresses the freecad issue though
02:19 PM miss0r: My desk is a mess now
02:20 PM roycroft: i should go out to the shop to finish making my moxon vise and work on my drill press table
02:20 PM roycroft: i might install freecad on a linux machine later and see if it is more stable than on mac os x
02:20 PM roycroft: i can't imagine it wouldn't be
02:22 PM miss0r: doubtfull
02:22 PM Tom_L: roycroft, try to build it from source on buster mkay?
02:24 PM roycroft: that would be boring
02:25 PM roycroft: the days of comp.sources.unix are thankfully long gone
02:41 PM jymmmm: roycroft: Oh you know you loved to UUDECODE :)
02:42 PM JT-Mobile: dang wind blows a lot here
02:56 PM jymmmm: JT-Mobile: Where's "here"?/
02:58 PM roycroft: a mighty wind's a blowin' 'cross the land and 'cross the sea
03:17 PM _unreal_: yippy heading out for the 3hour tour
03:18 PM _unreal_: I think google drive is down
03:18 PM _unreal_: nope nope there it goes finally
03:19 PM _unreal_: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_r_ozuO1Uy5PwTVqCG-p5dhFCRsagqq6 I'm vac bagging my two boards together
03:19 PM _unreal_: I used the dirt cheap home depot fiberglass resin, the last that I had. to glue them
03:19 PM _unreal_: two screws to "align, and sucked down
03:19 PM _unreal_: DAMN that stuff kicks fast
03:20 PM _unreal_: just enough time to WET OUT, the I was tabbing the bag together AS it was starting to gel, I was like OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK,,, and naturally I was using the only vac pump I have on hand that is TINY
03:20 PM _unreal_: took like 4min to draw down
03:21 PM _unreal_: but I'm sure its going to be good
03:43 PM JT-Mobile: jymmmm Eureka Springs Arkansas
03:44 PM Tom_L: still?
03:44 PM JT-Mobile: aye heading home in the morning
03:44 PM Tom_L: ahh yeah.. you're waiting for bad weather to go home :)
03:45 PM JT-Mobile: pretty much lol
03:45 PM jymmmm: lol
03:45 PM Tom_L: JT-Mobile, andy says you can get those gtk files from sid
03:45 PM jymmmm: JT-Mobile: So break down on a bridge in a hurricane this time?
03:45 PM Tom_L: i can't seem to find em
03:45 PM Tom_L: jymmmm, no snow storm
03:45 PM JT-Mobile: which gtk files?
03:46 PM Tom_L: the 2 preventing gmoccapy from working
03:46 PM Tom_L: gtksourceview2
03:46 PM Tom_L: python-vte
03:46 PM JT-Mobile: ah, I don't use it so I just delete the dependency lol
03:46 PM Tom_L: in the halxxxx.py?
03:47 PM Tom_L: i don't get the error until i try to run the sim for them
03:47 PM JT-Mobile: debian/control.bottom.in
03:47 PM Tom_L: oh
03:47 PM JT-Mobile: debian/control
03:47 PM Tom_L: yeah i did that
03:47 PM JT-Mobile: I get a build error
03:47 PM Tom_L: control doesn't show up on mine until i build it
03:48 PM Tom_L: and then the lines aren't in it
03:48 PM JT-Mobile: debian/configure uspace
03:48 PM Tom_L: so i just changed the first one
03:48 PM JT-Mobile: after doing that it shows up
03:48 PM Tom_L: k
03:48 PM JT-Mobile: so my tutorial is a bit backwards lol
03:48 PM Tom_L: i got it built and working
03:49 PM Tom_L: gave up on freecad build
03:49 PM JT-Mobile: ok
03:49 PM Tom_L: unless you come up with some magical solution :)
03:50 PM JT-Mobile: prob won't work on that too many other projects to work on
03:50 PM Tom_L: yeah, i'm not planning to use freecad anyway. just wanted to look it over a bit
03:51 PM JT-Mobile: I'll use it for 3d printing it seems ok for that
03:52 PM Tom_L: you still have to run it thru a slicer don't you?
03:53 PM Tom_L: granted it's better than openscad
03:54 PM JT-Mobile: yea, create the model, export as stl, slice, print
03:57 PM Tom_L: i figured you'd be using SW for that
03:58 PM JT-Mobile: well SW is only on my desk PC so I can't putz with it downstairs
03:58 PM Tom_L: oh
03:59 PM Deejay: gn8
05:28 PM gregcnc: dang 3-7" of snow tomorrow
05:29 PM Tom_L: just keep it there mkay?
05:49 PM jymmmm: gregcnc: Got firewood?
06:10 PM * JT-Mobile checks the weather again
06:13 PM Tom_L: 14F here tomorrow
06:13 PM Tom_L: high 30ish
06:14 PM Tom_L: rain starting ~9ish here
06:17 PM JT-Mobile: we are heading out a bit early to try and beat it home
06:17 PM Tom_L: looks like the rain starts somewhere in Mo and spreads out from there
06:18 PM Tom_L: i finally got a decent path out of freecad
06:18 PM Tom_L: at least in the sim
06:18 PM JT-Mobile: hopefully NW MO lol
06:18 PM Tom_L: around joplin
06:19 PM Tom_L: or more in SE ks
06:20 PM JT-Mobile: I'm hoping to stay ahead of it
06:20 PM Tom_L: from what i see you should be ablet o
06:20 PM JT-Mobile: that's good
06:21 PM Tom_L: definitely on it's way though
06:21 PM JT-Mobile: yea
06:29 PM jymmmm: Tom_L eeeeesh
06:44 PM Connor: What happens in lcnc when you tell a machine to home, and it's already on home?
06:45 PM JT-Mobile: depends on the GUI
06:45 PM Connor: OKay.. so, I thought I had this figured out last night.. But, I forgot about something.
06:45 PM Connor: I'm wokring on a laser cutter.
06:46 PM Connor: It has a probe, honeycomb, and slats.. The honeycomb raises the bed up about an inch.
06:46 PM Connor: I need to have it home midway as to not trip the probe.
06:46 PM Connor: The best way to do that, is to home DOWN. But, that would make it go all the way down, and it's rather slow..
06:47 PM JT-Mobile: Z should always home to the top
06:47 PM Connor: Well.. If it homes to the top, it can crash into the z-probe.
06:47 PM JT-Mobile: weird machine
06:47 PM Connor: Yea, probe is just below the laser cutting head.
06:47 PM Connor: and it's fixed.
06:48 PM gregcnc: retrofit?
06:48 PM Connor: need to have enough travel for it to trip, but, not so much that it can crash into the head. Which means, if I home up, it'll trip to probe.
06:48 PM _unreal_: sup
06:48 PM Connor: Brand new, installing linuxcnc. Never had z limits/home.
06:49 PM Connor: I guess they expected you to use the probe.
06:49 PM _unreal_: just finished practicing some good parenting... My POS Xwife gave are daughter a bunch of drinks
06:49 PM _unreal_: I told her dont drink them she did anyways
06:49 PM _unreal_: DADDY i HAVE TO GO!!! NO
06:49 PM JT-Mobile: set home to whereever you are and use the probe
06:50 PM _unreal_: Connor, did you end up doing that limit/sensor switch setup for the different work bed materials?
06:50 PM Connor: _unreal_: Yea, that's installed.. at issue is the probe and homing direction.
06:50 PM _unreal_: ahh thats just settings
06:51 PM _unreal_: what method did you end up employing to do the sensor as far as the work bed (implementing method?)
06:51 PM Connor: Microswitch under the honeycomb.
06:51 PM Connor: It'll short out the honeycomb home or limit switch.. which ever it becomes.
06:53 PM _unreal_: short out?
06:53 PM _unreal_: you mean break the connection?
06:53 PM _unreal_: so its an open loop
06:53 PM _unreal_: or closed loop which ever
06:53 PM Connor: If the honeycomb detection switch detects that the honeycomb isn't present.. it closes closes the honeycomb limit/home
06:54 PM Connor: so, that switch is basically disabled.
06:56 PM _unreal_: ok
06:56 PM Connor: If lcnc is on home an you tell it to home.. does it skip the search for home and go to the back off of switch?
06:57 PM _unreal_: lcnc should see home being the direction it was told to SEEK. once it finds it that IS its "home" and it then follows the scripts as to what to do from there on
06:57 PM _unreal_: typically hit home then back off till the limit switch is no longer triggered and move 2-5mm away
06:58 PM _unreal_: and set as current location as HOME or zero
06:58 PM Tom_L: Connor when i home, i don't stay on the limit
06:58 PM Tom_L: i back off a few thou
06:58 PM Tom_L: so it's not sitting on it
06:58 PM _unreal_: ^^
06:58 PM Tom_L: homing again will travel a very short distance to home and back off again
06:58 PM Connor: yea, in order to not crash the table into the probe, I want home to be a bit lower that the z-probe.
06:59 PM Tom_L: you don't want your home sequence to sit on the home limit
07:02 PM Connor: Dang it.. I'm having a really hard time describing what I'm thinking.
07:02 PM _unreal_: :) dont think follow what we are telling you
07:02 PM _unreal_: lol
07:04 PM Connor: I need the distance from home to the limit to be enough to allow the table to come up, home and not trip the probe. But, I also need it to be smart enough to know if it's above the home, to home down, not up, otherwise, it'll trip the limit.
07:05 PM Tom_L: you got your work cut out then
07:05 PM Connor: Yea, that's why I was asking what happens if you tell it to home when home is tripped.. I can set it up so that home is tripped for the bottom half..
07:06 PM Connor: or the top half.. which ever..
07:16 PM _unreal_: just pulled my new cnc machine base out of the bag
07:16 PM _unreal_: vac bagged it before I left to get my daughter
07:16 PM _unreal_: looks good
07:17 PM _unreal_: That freaking home depot fiberglass resin you get sooooo little working time with it
07:17 PM _unreal_: they claim its VE resin, I think its mostly poly
07:17 PM _unreal_: hence the short working time
07:25 PM gregcnc: connor: did you try home when home switch is tripped? It should go straight to the latching portion of homing process
07:26 PM gregcnc: separate home switch should work. use negative latch and make sure home switch doesn't change state when the axis moves past it going Z+
07:28 PM jymmmm: gregcnc: I called, they are going to move the snow tomorrow 100 outside you house now... your welcome
07:29 PM jymmmm: 100 feet*
07:29 PM gregcnc: if only, feels like last winter just ended
07:29 PM jymmmm: gregcnc: Yeah, first snow for you of the season?
07:29 PM gregcnc: this will be the second snow this year
07:29 PM jymmmm: ah
07:30 PM jymmmm: I STILL need to find warm socks when I wear my rubber boots :(
07:30 PM gregcnc: record cold a few days ago
07:30 PM jymmmm: gregcnc: Got firewood?
07:30 PM * Tom_L gives jymmmm some fuzzy bunny slippers
07:31 PM gregcnc: a few sticks. but that's not an issue here we have natural gas
07:31 PM jymmmm: gregcnc: ah ok
07:32 PM jymmmm: Tom_L I wish, but walking in the snow in rubber boots might keep them dry, but they are jsut FREEZING
07:32 PM jymmmm: ...painfully
07:32 PM jymmmm: do wool socks REALLY help?
07:32 PM JT-Mobile: yes and mukluks are even better
07:32 PM Connor: gregcnc: That's what I'm trying to verify.. If that's the case.. then I can extend the trip length up to the limits and it'll back off instead of searching above the home switch.
07:34 PM jymmmm: JT-Mobile: No mucklucks, just these (unlined) https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81oSPilbppL._UY575_.jpg
07:34 PM gregcnc: I have not tried in Linuxcnc, but have seen machines this way.
07:35 PM Connor: I think that's HOW it has to work.. If your using home as limit.. it moves off, and comes back on..
07:35 PM JT-Mobile: get a bigger pair and put on some wool socks
07:36 PM jymmmm: JT-Mobile: They are big enough, I just can't find any THICK wool socks, but maybe I don't know what I'm looking for. I've even tried wearing two pair of crew socks
07:37 PM Tom_L: https://www.carhartt.com/category/carhartt-accessories-socks-cold-weather-heavy
07:38 PM JT-Mobile: crew socks are cotton...
07:38 PM JT-Mobile: Duluth trading co
07:38 PM JT-Mobile: or carhartt
07:38 PM Tom_L: The Original Carhartt Arctic Wool Sock
07:39 PM JT-Mobile: that should work
07:39 PM JT-Mobile: page won't load for me lol
07:39 PM Tom_L: handfull of styles there
07:40 PM Tom_L: https://www.carhartt.com/products/Arctic-Wool-Heavyweight-Boot-Sock-A3915
07:41 PM Tom_L: hope it doesn't come to that here this year
07:41 PM * JT-Mobile has a pair of insulated rubber boots for nasty cold days...
07:41 PM jymmmm: xl is 11-15, wth
07:42 PM jymmmm: JT-Mobile: the fuzzy fake sheep stuff?
07:43 PM Rab: Uggs?
07:44 PM jymmmm: 68% wool, $20/pair https://www.carhartt.com/products/Arctic-Wool-Heavyweight-Boot-Sock-A3915
07:44 PM roycroft: i usually get my wool socks at rei
07:45 PM JT-Mobile: poor Lamb Chops and Sheri
07:45 PM jymmmm: lol
07:45 PM jymmmm: roycroft: I'm in BFE, no REI within 200 miles
07:46 PM jymmmm: Amazon delivers =)
07:46 PM roycroft: so do rei, actually
07:46 PM roycroft: but i do have a local store here in eugene
07:47 PM jymmmm: ah
07:48 PM _unreal_: fewwwwfff...
07:48 PM _unreal_: just walked the new Base board for my new bigger cnc machine though the house to my van
07:48 PM roycroft: bluing rough cast iron really sucks up a lot of oxpho
07:48 PM _unreal_: now the house smells like FRP resin and all I did was walk through with it
07:48 PM _unreal_: then again I did JUST pull it out of the vac bag
07:48 PM roycroft: it's not a fun thing to do at all
07:48 PM _unreal_: so it was out gassing like a mofo
07:49 PM roycroft: the cotton balls get all shredded up and stick to the parts
07:49 PM _unreal_: oxpho?
07:49 PM roycroft: a common gun bluing compound
07:49 PM _unreal_: I have never done bluing
07:49 PM roycroft: https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/metal-bluing/liquid-cold-bluing-chemicals/oxpho-blue--prod1072.aspx
07:49 PM _unreal_: I'm torn
07:49 PM _unreal_: so I'm building a new home cnc machine
07:50 PM roycroft: i just made a moxon vise
07:50 PM roycroft: and the vise hardware is really nice, but really expensive
07:50 PM roycroft: and really really rust-prone
07:50 PM roycroft: so i blued it, and am applying several coats of gun oil to the warmed-up parts
07:51 PM _unreal_: hum
07:51 PM _unreal_: soon as the image loads I'll post it in a mock up
07:51 PM _unreal_: there it is https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_y-p3rXoyAva_URZ5QvpYhxcZx1bH6i9
07:52 PM _unreal_: The angles are stuck and I dont have the correct alen key to remove them
07:53 PM _unreal_: I'm trying to find the correct extrusion nuts for the big extrusion. its like 1.5"x3" in size
07:53 PM _unreal_: the cross pieces are 2 stacked
07:53 PM jymmmm: Ok, found these socks... https://www.duluthtrading.com/mens-woolpaca-heavyweight-crew-socks-dark-gray-x--000094086.html
07:55 PM _unreal_: jymmmm, trying to make up for lack of electricity ;)
07:55 PM _unreal_: ?
07:55 PM jymmmm: Lack of electricity doens't account for snow
07:55 PM _unreal_: heh
07:55 PM _unreal_: ya its like 75 outside here
07:56 PM _unreal_: i'm sorry its 76F
07:56 PM jymmmm: It's 64F atm, but it won't be.
07:56 PM _unreal_: so I'm torn
07:56 PM JT-Mobile: those look like some warm socks
07:56 PM _unreal_: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_y-p3rXoyAva_URZ5QvpYhxcZx1bH6i9
07:57 PM _unreal_: wether I should go with ball screws or threaded rod
07:57 PM roycroft: jymmm: these are quite similar:
07:57 PM roycroft: https://www.rei.com/product/119977/rei-co-op-merino-wool-heavyweight-crew-socks
07:57 PM _unreal_: paca makes me itch
07:58 PM _unreal_: Do you guys know of any good brushless servo controllers that are NOT expensive?
07:58 PM _unreal_: I have one DC brushed servo
07:58 PM _unreal_: I wish I had kept the motor. I had a set but I tossed the other one because the encoder was messed up
07:59 PM _unreal_: then again that was back in main 5 years ago when I was dirt train broke
08:15 PM _unreal_: does any one in here use servos?
08:23 PM _unreal_: ?
08:31 PM Tom_L: lost of ppl do
08:31 PM Tom_L: just not me
08:33 PM jymmmm: nor me
08:35 PM roycroft: the freenas download page recommends 0.19-pre for mac os x users
08:35 PM roycroft: since i'm having so much trouble with 0.18.4, perhaps i'll give that a go
08:36 PM XXCoder: alexa is now witness to a murder case. its made by amazon.
08:36 PM XXCoder: we are at future now
08:37 PM roycroft: i don't allow any eavesdropping devices in my house
08:38 PM XXCoder: yeah lol
