02:54 AM * Loetmichel just cleaned the makrolon(r) window on his CNC router... MAN was that dirty... wood dust and a static charged plastic window dont mix well ;)
03:59 AM Deejay: moin
05:00 AM Tom_L: morning
05:05 AM XXCoder: DANG
05:06 AM XXCoder: drive home was bit dangerous
05:06 AM XXCoder: fog was like soup
05:34 AM jthornton: morning
05:34 AM XXCoder: hey
06:19 AM jthornton: 26°F
06:19 AM XXCoder: soup fog
06:19 AM XXCoder: 38f
06:20 AM XXCoder: each time theres very heavy fog it always reminds me of that book where reality was cracked
06:20 AM XXCoder: and theres fog walls moving around
06:20 AM XXCoder: if person walks into it, it gets person to different time but same place
06:34 AM jthornton: or Langoliers
06:35 AM XXCoder: hmm dont recall any fog in that movie?
06:35 AM jthornton: no but people disappeared
06:35 AM XXCoder: ahh yea
07:06 AM hazzy-m: CaptHindsight: absolutely! If it's something simple bring a flat and drawing, if more complex best to have a DXF with outline and bendlines or a STEP file
07:09 AM methods_: a bummer wish i could have gone this year
07:10 AM methods_: went 2 years ago and it was a blast
07:10 AM XXCoder: is there cnc expo or something?
07:11 AM XXCoder: and how expensive is it? heh
07:11 AM methods_: fabtech
07:12 AM methods_: i've never paid have no idea how much it costs
07:12 AM methods_: always get free tickets from machinery dealers
07:12 AM hazzy-m: methods_: it's always fun when it's in Vegas:)
07:12 AM methods_: yeah next time it's in vegas i'm going
07:13 AM hazzy-m: Yeah, I didn't think anybody ever pays lol. If anyone needs a voucher I have a bunch
07:13 AM XXCoder: lol ok
07:13 AM XXCoder: location?
07:14 AM methods_: was that pics of a big downbending brake you posted
07:14 AM methods_: chicago this year
07:15 AM hazzy-m: 22f this morning :( doors are still open so it's freezing in here
07:16 AM XXCoder: why is doors open?
07:16 AM Loetmichel: what, only -5°C? thats warm enough to do the snow shoveling in jeans and tshirt ;)
07:17 AM methods_: theyre setting up for fabtech bringing in all kinds of equipment
07:17 AM hazzy-m: methods_: no, it's a fully automated up down folding machine. 4m with 5mm mild steel capacity. Fully automated part manipulation
07:18 AM hazzy-m: It finds the blank with cameras
07:18 AM methods_: man all these brakes are fully automated now
07:18 AM methods_: crazy
07:19 AM XXCoder: Loetmichel: http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Humor/Docs/MichiganTemperatures.html
07:19 AM methods_: turret punches now too
07:20 AM methods_: hazzy-m: your company have a showroom in chicago?
07:21 AM hazzy-m: Loetmichel: shoveling snow and assembling high precision machine tools is a little different :) Even the German techs are complaining it's too cold lol
07:22 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: sounds about right to me. seems i would fit right in in michigan ;)
07:22 AM hazzy-m: methods_: no, we're based out of Atlanta
07:22 AM XXCoder: :)
07:22 AM Loetmichel: hazzy-m: bah, humbug ;)
07:22 AM methods_: ah good deal
07:22 AM methods_: i'm in charleston sc
07:23 AM methods_: you have showroom in atl?
07:29 AM Tom_L: 23F
07:34 AM hazzy-m: <methods_ "you have showroom in atl?"> methods_: yes, pretty big one
07:42 AM methods_: ah cool next time im in atl i'll have to check it out
08:07 AM CaptHindsight: unless you were at the south pole i think everyone is still adjusting to the drop in temp here
08:11 AM CaptHindsight: Fabtech has free entry for Exhibits until Nov 1, after that it's $50
08:12 AM CaptHindsight: I forgot to register one year and walked up expecting to pay and person at the counter had free passes

08:52 AM SpeedEvil: Large machines
09:08 AM Loetmichel: *AAAAAHHHH!* just got a mail with 3 dxfs from the boss, each one a few 100 small parts to mill in a 600mm by 400mm sheet of 0,3mm brass... and NOT A SINGLE LINE/CURVE joined together.... *click clickclick* [join] *click clickclick* [join] ... $me gets the big fish to slap the boss with for a while...
09:10 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: And you should reply back with a screenshot of how to enable autojoin
09:12 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: OR... maybe he didn't want them joined, just lines. =)
01:03 PM CaptHindsight: ever notice that the old guy in the youtube about some sort of machine is wearing a sweater and dress pants
01:29 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: huh?
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: never notice?
01:30 PM CaptHindsight: Americans and younger people tend to wear jeans and some work shirt with a patch/ad on it
01:34 PM jymmmm: Nope, not really.
01:35 PM jymmmm: jeans are comfy
01:37 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWGquxvqI_Y ever wears a tie
01:37 PM CaptHindsight: ever/even
01:39 PM CaptHindsight: jymmmm: are they done with the blackouts for now?
01:40 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Um... yes he's wearing a tie, but he also wrote "Marty McFly" on his underwear
01:41 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: For now it seems. Today is the one year anniversary of the fire. Saw helicopters yesterday inspecting the lines.
01:42 PM CaptHindsight: was down to ~15F this morning here, you guys still pretty comfy in the 60's?
01:46 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: 67 ATM
01:46 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: and the -15.... OUCH
01:47 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I wish I knew how to weld, I'l STILL working on the stove idea
01:53 PM CaptHindsight: ~15F vs -15F
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: it just takes some practice to weld
01:57 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Anything < 45F
01:57 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: true, but I don't even have a welder, so makes it challenging =)
02:01 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Honestly, I can't tell if it's me specifically, or the HF welder I had borrowed from a neighrbor, or both =)
02:01 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I did pretty good when I tried on a diving welders setup
02:36 PM Tom_L: jymmmm just use a car battery :)
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: the new brand of HF welders are actually decent
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfK3Y9J_zxo VULCAN Welders From Harbor Freight - Are They Any Good?!?
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: Thermdrill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFmh98xupFY
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fCGAFwrJAg
02:53 PM jymmmm: Um how to you safely remove the diodes with a soldering iron? https://www.radiomods.co.nz/kenwood/kenwoodthd7a.html
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: tweezer type iron or hot air
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: somebody has stolen many of the pixel from that pic :)
02:55 PM jymmmm: Dont have tweezer type
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: you could do it with a standard iron with a fine chisel tip
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: by fine I mean <2mm wide
02:56 PM jymmmm: I can file a pointy tip down
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: sure
02:58 PM jymmmm: so just go back and forth with the soldering iron?
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: maybe if it fits over both ends of the resistors you can leave the tip as is
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: heat both sides up, flick, done
02:59 PM jymmmm: ok, hope I don't lift a pad =(
02:59 PM CaptHindsight: just hot enough and not for toooo looonng
03:00 PM jymmmm: ok
03:10 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: is hot air that "precise" not to dislodge near by components?
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: i have teeny tiny nozzles
03:14 PM jymmmm: ah ok
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JM4oCpWnjU
03:15 PM CaptHindsight: How to Remove SMD Resistors & Capacitors Using a Regular Soldering Iron
03:15 PM CaptHindsight: heat and flick
03:19 PM jymmmm: I have to file the tip even sharper, lol
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: buy some spare tips
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: what shape is the tip now?
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: maybe just flatten one side and you can heat both sides at once
03:23 PM jymmmm: ok
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: the vids should give you the idea
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: I need some new screw drivers, what brand to buy?
03:24 PM jymmmm: it's just too wide atm to get into the spot on the side closest to the grren wire
03:24 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: regular or precisiion screwdrivers?
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: regulat flats and 1, 2, 3 phllips
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: i guess i should get my Klien replaced under warr and any craftsman
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: some are 40 years old
03:25 PM Deejay: gn8
03:26 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: https://www.wihatools.com/screwdrivers/precision
03:27 PM jymmmm: for regular, home depot or lowes, lowes has carftsman btw
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: also at ACE hardware
03:29 PM jymmmm: oh yeah, I keep forgetting about them
03:29 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: I really LOVE those precison screwdrivers btw
03:30 PM XXCoder: https://sourcehut.org/ nice
03:30 PM XXCoder: might be better replacement for git
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: nah Linus wrote GIT can't git no better
03:31 PM XXCoder: https://sourcehut.org/blog/2019-10-23-srht-puts-users-first/
03:31 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: how long have you been waiting to say that?
03:31 PM XXCoder: many moons. many.
03:31 PM jymmmm: lol
03:31 PM CaptHindsight: i say it every day in the mirror
03:32 PM XXCoder: lol
03:32 PM jymmmm: practing in the mirror doesn't count
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: daily affirmations
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: you're special
03:32 PM jymmmm: ah
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: people like you
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: Linus wrote GIT can't git no better
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: I am not a monster
03:33 PM jymmmm: GIT ER DONE
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: yeah lie everyone does :)
03:35 PM XXCoder: lol https://66.media.tumblr.com/729d77c9d86c1495265f2aabbcd135be/tumblr_ndf01oswvH1qa8gddo1_250.gif
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: whats that other brand at lowes?
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: Kobalt
03:35 PM XXCoder: way too excited.
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.lowes.com/c/Hand-tools-Tools
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: I have some irwin cchannel locks
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: I bent some cold chisels last week
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: must have been some left over HF
03:56 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: FUUUUCK it's so small I can't even tell if I lifted the pad or not, but they're out. Now to reassemble the radio and see if it still works
03:58 PM CaptHindsight: unlikely unless you held it for >1 minute or similar
04:03 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: YAY it still works =)
04:04 PM jymmmm: Well, powers on that is
04:17 PM CaptHindsight: how about xmit and receive?
04:22 PM jymmmm: Yep, just hit the local repeater =)
04:23 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: And now FULL band tx =)
04:34 PM andypugh: <turns the gas on under the pewter pan>
04:34 PM andypugh: <moulds have been warming for long enough in the oven>
04:39 PM jymmmm: andypugh: melting pewter?
04:40 PM andypugh: Yes. I tried boiling eggs in it, but they floated.
04:40 PM SpeedEvil: 'No, I diddn't mean a pan made of pewter you idiots'
04:41 PM jymmmm: lol
04:52 PM andypugh: I was going to post a video to YouTube from my phone. But I get “sign in with Google is temporarily disabled for this App”
04:52 PM andypugh: Where, as far as I can tell “this App” is either iOS or Google’s own YouTube App
04:53 PM _unreal_: just got my extrusion for the cnc machine Revamp
04:54 PM _unreal_: I was going to make the machine 20x20 but the more I think about it I may as well just use the full length of the extrusion stock that I have. Would likely be wiser to just get the full run size of the machine.
04:55 PM _unreal_: If I have enough to make something of good size. WHY short my self.
05:04 PM jymmmm: andypugh: that sounds annoying
05:05 PM XXCoder: _unreal_: can always have special areas if you have more room
05:05 PM XXCoder: ie area for toolchange if you have spindle that can do that
05:12 PM andypugh: mozmck: I am contemplating dedicating this weekend to making practice ISO files, Buster RTAI and RTPreempt 2.8. Does that seem like a good idea?
05:12 PM Tom_L: i think it's an awesome idea
05:12 PM andypugh: Ooops! Wrong channel!
05:13 PM Tom_L: andypugh, dual install or one each?
05:13 PM Tom_L: naw not really :)
05:13 PM andypugh: I now doubt my competence.
05:16 PM _unreal_: special areas?
05:16 PM Tom_L: andypugh, which RTAI?
05:16 PM andypugh: The latest one with musl, I guess
05:16 PM andypugh: That’s part of the project
05:16 PM Tom_L: oh
05:16 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight seemed confident with it
05:16 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, this is just a small extrusion frame system
05:16 PM Tom_L: holler if you need a test
05:16 PM _unreal_: I dont know that I would go out of my way for a tool change system
05:16 PM XXCoder: yeah it was an example :)
05:16 PM _unreal_: regardless I'd need to have a spindle that could even do that.
05:16 PM XXCoder: you could do "edge" area, or 4th axis
05:16 PM _unreal_: 4th I could see
05:16 PM _unreal_: do you know of any mini tool change setups?
05:16 PM XXCoder: "edge" is odd, its a open space where you can mount item in such way that its flat downwards below cnc machine with edge just above table top
05:16 PM XXCoder: so you can mill edge
05:16 PM XXCoder: hard to explain lemme see if I can find video
05:17 PM _unreal_: I'm looking at a work bed of aprox 24"x36" working AREAS not sure prob 20x32 ish?
05:18 PM _unreal_: and 3.5" Z clearance
05:18 PM _unreal_: aprox
05:18 PM _unreal_: dont have time for video right now
05:18 PM _unreal_: got the 3 hour tour in a second
05:19 PM XXCoder: lol ok
05:19 PM _unreal_: beating I mean meeting my daughters mother
05:19 PM XXCoder: granted that guy machine is really big
05:19 PM _unreal_: guy machine?
05:19 PM XXCoder: but it has area where table top drops down
05:19 PM XXCoder: "that guy" as in "that person's machine"
05:19 PM _unreal_: I dont know who your talking about
05:19 PM _unreal_: any one seen my hat?
05:20 PM XXCoder: so he could mount some part on machine and set 90 degree downwards so can set and mill side of part
05:20 PM XXCoder: your MAGA hat?
05:20 PM _unreal_: yes
05:20 PM _unreal_: :)
05:20 PM _unreal_: more like fishing hat
05:20 PM XXCoder: yours would be too small for drop down but you could have area where theres gap and you can put part and clamp there
05:21 PM _unreal_: would be cool to have a 90 degree spindle mount
05:21 PM _unreal_: with swivel
05:21 PM _unreal_: ok I'm out
05:21 PM XXCoder: later
05:21 PM XXCoder: if I find that video ill link you
05:21 PM Tom_L: https://hackaday.com/2016/06/20/hackaday-prize-entry-diy-automatic-tool-changer/
05:22 PM andypugh: XXCoder: Sounds like the Deckel / Maho / Aciera machines where the table mounts to a vertical T-slotted face, so you can take the table off to mount big things, or special fixtures
05:22 PM Tom_L: haha, aparently it loostens the nut
05:22 PM XXCoder: tom lol yeah I remember that
05:22 PM XXCoder: it was certainly unusual
05:23 PM andypugh: I still think that it is actually very clever,
05:23 PM Tom_L: clever yes, i'm not sure i'd trust it to be tight enough
05:27 PM andypugh: _unreal_: XXCoder Pictures of why a removable table can be nice: http://www.lathes.co.uk/deckel/page2.html
05:31 PM XXCoder: _unreal_: https://www.youtube.com/user/urbanTrash/videos
05:31 PM XXCoder: andypugh: check his videos too. he have a GIANT cnc router that have unusual abilities
05:35 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhH1LqDUbcg good video
07:55 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: and andy https://github.com/NTULINUX/RTAI/tree/new-libm
