12:23 AM flyback: https://youtu.be/WdhQ5mM_Giw?t=75
03:17 AM Deejay: moin
03:42 AM Loetmichel: soo, finally got the watercooles spindle dismantled and cleaned. water should flow again... but the bearings are pretty much shot. one 7000RS, one 7002rs. Both have about halfa mm play... and feel like there is sand in them when turning by hand. Ah well, after six years 5 days a week of work thats OK for a chinese 800W spindle... i am ordering new bearings :-)
03:42 AM Loetmichel: moin daniel
04:04 AM XXCoder: how long do brushings last?
05:05 AM Tom_L: morning
05:05 AM XXCoder: yo
05:06 AM pink_vampire: hi
05:10 AM XXCoder: hey world's pinkest machinist
05:14 AM jthornton: morning
05:14 AM XXCoder: yo
06:34 AM Elmo40: XXCoder, as with all other questions... depends
06:34 AM XXCoder: Elmo40: thats why I directly asked loet
06:34 AM Elmo40: XXCoder, what are they rubbing against? the load? their size? any lubrication added? operating temperature?
06:34 AM XXCoder: he was refabishing his spindle
06:35 AM Elmo40: ok, different questions then... what is his duty cycle? what is the RPM? how imbalanced is the tooling? what material will it cut?
06:36 AM Elmo40: no way to know.
06:36 AM XXCoder: whatever
06:37 AM Elmo40: now, what do you mean by 'last' ? until runout becomed 0.0001"? or 0.00005" or whatever number you come up with that is 'too much' for your own standards?
06:38 AM Elmo40: arguably a bushing is always in constant wear. a new bushing might only 'last' 1 day if your tolerance is super tight.
06:39 AM Elmo40: by the way, if anyone is still running on 12V i highly recommend going to at least 24V. there is a noticible increase in stepper torque.
06:39 AM jthornton: I use 64v
06:47 AM jthornton: XXCoder, https://youtu.be/ilkG1cwt1Ic
06:48 AM XXCoder: looking
06:50 AM XXCoder: testing spreadsheet stuff eh
06:50 AM jthornton: yea
06:53 AM jthornton: it's a little clunky but functional
06:57 AM XXCoder: man I miss main clickspring videos
06:58 AM XXCoder: he finished paper and submitted it I think but hes still waiting for publish I think
07:52 AM * jthornton wonders why the server has 5.7G of logs...
09:17 AM skunkworks: Elmo40: with steppers - you want to run the highest voltage the drives will handle. (99% of the time)
09:22 AM Rab: Loetmichel, which grade of replacement bearings are you getting? Name-brand or generic?
09:28 AM Loetmichel: skf
09:31 AM Rab: Loetmichel, nice. Standard tolerance?
10:15 AM Loetmichel: yes
10:16 AM Loetmichel: its spring loaded anyways.
10:16 AM Loetmichel: @ Rab
10:52 AM gregcnc: right, with steppers current regulation in the drive limits power to the motors
12:38 PM Loetmichel: muhaha... just cleaned out a cupboard in the kitchen... found a still sealed box of cornflakes... best before 01.04.2015... :-)
12:38 PM Loetmichel: <- should tidy up more often ;)
12:38 PM gregcnc: that's a goof year
12:38 PM gregcnc: good year
01:24 PM jymmmm: hola
01:42 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: did they still taste OK?
03:00 PM pink_vampire|2 is now known as pink_vampire
03:20 PM Deejay: gn8
03:22 PM _unreal_: sup
03:58 PM _unreal_: showered... I now feel HUMAAAN again
04:35 PM _unreal_: anyone live? https://www.ebay.com/itm/PDTech-2040-20x40mm-T-slot-V-slot-Frame-Aluminum-Extrusion-Cut-48in-1-2m-USA/254176433374?var=553534848355
04:35 PM _unreal_: trying to figure out what type of nuts to get for this
04:35 PM _unreal_: same seller https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hammer-nut-1-4-turn-for-20-or-30-series-t-slot-frame-M4-M5-M6-multi-pack/253141017283?hash=item3af06162c3:m:metdcmIGblUjzo9e7KXcSZw:sc:USPSFirstClass!33428!US!-1
04:35 PM _unreal_: I believe the 20 series?
04:36 PM _unreal_: found my answer
05:33 PM _unreal_: quiet in here tonight

06:22 PM skunkworks: sorry
06:22 PM Tom_L: wow, is that a link or a whole file :)

06:24 PM skunkworks: it is the actual nut file - you have to print it... ;)
06:32 PM _unreal_: my printer cant read that kind of file
06:32 PM _unreal_: btw skunkworks <_unreal_> I believe the 20 series?
06:32 PM _unreal_: <_unreal_> found my answer
06:40 PM _unreal_: so cant complain though $45 for 2800mm of 2040 extrusion
06:40 PM _unreal_: will show up on sat.
06:50 PM _unreal_: so I have ordered my Extrusion and I know how I'm going to build My machine
06:50 PM jymmmm: skunkworks: I'm gonna blame ebay on that one
06:51 PM _unreal_: My new machine is going to be nice
06:51 PM _unreal_: home machine
06:51 PM _unreal_: god I'm in cnc machine overload
06:51 PM _unreal_: working one, building one for work, building one for my daughter. building a new one for home because my current one that works great is a little small
06:51 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:52 PM _unreal_: amazing though I'm building a machine that would be equal to a $1200 machine for maybe $200
06:52 PM _unreal_: 20x22" work area I blieve is what it will be with 3+" plunge
08:26 PM Erhu is now known as I_AM_BORG
08:27 PM I_AM_BORG is now known as IamBorg
08:28 PM IamBorg is now known as Iam_Borg
08:38 PM norias: oi
08:45 PM _unreal_: its ahhoi
08:47 PM norias: ahh, ok
08:47 PM _unreal_: Im sure most in here are land lubbers
08:49 PM norias: ok
08:49 PM _unreal_: so I've ordered most of my parts for building the new home cnc
08:50 PM _unreal_: I love my current machine but its just to small
08:50 PM norias: cool
08:50 PM norias: i'm working on stuff to analyze step files
08:50 PM _unreal_: ?
08:51 PM _unreal_: heh step files, the red headed step child of cad/cam
08:51 PM norias: they are decent
08:51 PM norias: i like the idea
08:51 PM norias: way more than i like something like the solidworks native files
08:51 PM _unreal_: of a red headed step child?
08:51 PM norias: my mom is a redheaded step child
08:59 PM norias: i was thinking about doing some sort of verification for gcode
08:59 PM norias: but it seems like that's a little bit of a graveyard of dead projects
08:59 PM norias: there's no point in writing cam, there's just so many out there
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: why are there no precision machine shops on ships?
09:00 PM norias: well...
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: norias: how about 4 and 5 axis CAM?
09:00 PM norias: first define precision
09:00 PM norias: CaptHindsight: good point, but doesn't fusion 360 do that?
09:01 PM norias: (i don't know, haven't used it in some time)
09:01 PM CaptHindsight: dunno, it's just not open source
09:01 PM norias: fair
09:01 PM norias: there really isn't good open source cam
09:01 PM norias: at all
09:01 PM CaptHindsight: i'm working on stuff to analyze step files
09:01 PM norias: probably because it's hard
09:01 PM CaptHindsight: STEP format?
09:01 PM norias: yeah
09:02 PM norias: ap203 right now
09:02 PM norias: 214 later
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: ah ok
09:02 PM norias: as of now, i have a python script that grabs part volume, bounding box volume, calculates the difference and throws that in a csv
09:03 PM CaptHindsight: does FReCAD open STEP?
09:03 PM CaptHindsight: freeCAD
09:03 PM norias: that, combined with a max MRR should give you a lower bound on run time
09:04 PM norias: yeah, freecad should do step, it uses OCC
09:04 PM Tom_L: has anybody here posted a gcode file from freecad yet?
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: is the CAM working?
09:04 PM Tom_L: it's there
09:05 PM Tom_L: i was brousing in it a bit this evening
09:05 PM CaptHindsight: i thought guchs was working on it until he got permanently distracted
09:05 PM Tom_L: posts for centroid, comparams, dynapath, grbl, linuxcnc, opensb, philips, rml and smoothie
09:06 PM Tom_L: and grbl-G81
09:06 PM Tom_L: probably a drill cycle since they have none
09:06 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: I think seb has used it...
09:06 PM CaptHindsight: I never ran the freeCAD tutorial, it's nothing like NX, SW, CATIA, Creo etc so I never got very far with it
09:07 PM CaptHindsight: does the ruler in feeCAD work? I was never even able to measure any parts
09:07 PM Tom_L: haven't tried that yet
09:07 PM CaptHindsight: Open freecAD, import file, try to measure the parts, fail
09:08 PM Tom_L: dammit. this needs a reboot
09:15 PM norias: i really want to do gcode verification
09:15 PM norias: so that the stuff runs well the first time
09:15 PM norias: that's the big goal
09:17 PM CaptHindsight: LCNC running a Sim?
09:17 PM norias: i'm not a big fan of the visual verification stuff
09:17 PM Tom_L: why?
09:17 PM CaptHindsight: are you using some other CNC controller?
09:17 PM norias: i feel like it needs to be a set of tests
09:17 PM norias: so that it can be automated
09:18 PM Tom_L: i'm rather impressed with how much of the cnc process _is_ automated nowdays
09:18 PM CaptHindsight: preview plot does that
09:18 PM norias: depends on where, i guess
09:18 PM CaptHindsight: check for out of bounds anyway
09:18 PM norias: sure, that's an easy check
09:19 PM CaptHindsight: what do you want check for?
09:19 PM CaptHindsight: CAM sanity check?
09:19 PM norias: think through the list of things that can go wrong
09:19 PM norias: stupid level stuff like smashing fixtures or going out of bounds
09:19 PM norias: then stuff that requires a little more physics
09:19 PM norias: like breaking tools due to excessive feed
09:20 PM Tom_L: doesn't help if the fixtures aren't defined in the model
09:20 PM norias: excessive tool load
09:20 PM pink_vampire: hi
09:20 PM norias: i've done some work with defining axial doc and radial depth of cut combinations that are "valid"
09:21 PM norias: i'd check against those
09:23 PM norias: i'm not 100% sure, it's sort of a research project
09:23 PM norias: imagine doing you cam at home, and the cnc machine in a different location
09:23 PM norias: and think what stuff you would want checked to feel good about remotely hitting start on the machine
09:25 PM SpeedEvil: I keep wondering about live tooling force measurement.
09:25 PM norias: what would you measure?
09:25 PM norias: deflection?
09:26 PM SpeedEvil: Enough control to be able to back the tool off before a critical force that will break it or cause it to dig in hits
09:26 PM SpeedEvil: This is nontrivial[
09:27 PM norias: i feel like that's something you can do offline
09:27 PM SpeedEvil: If you know precisely where your towel is.
09:30 PM norias: ...
09:33 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest5964
09:48 PM adamj12b: Good Evening. Does anyone know if any work has ever been done to track tool life in LinuxCNC?
09:49 PM norias: good question.
09:50 PM norias: should be so easy
09:57 PM adamj12b: norias what would you suggest to get started tracking tool life in the control?
09:59 PM norias: i'm just saying for someone that is willing to screw with the gui code
09:59 PM norias: it should be fairly easy
09:59 PM norias: just track one variable per tool, you know?
10:26 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
10:38 PM drdoc: Tom_L: you around?
10:39 PM drdoc: it looks like the Eagle gcode script will do the needful
10:41 PM drdoc: the Z setup is unfamiliar and I haven't tried the drill job, but a dry run on traces looks good
10:47 PM cerna: adamj12b: I think Schiffler was talking about something in one of his videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/drschiffler/videos
11:05 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, the ruler seems to work ok for me
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: does it measure any imported model features?
11:21 PM Tom_L: haven't tried importing a model yet
11:22 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Screenshot%20at%202019-11-05%2023-13-49.png
11:23 PM Tom_L: need to figure out the clearances etc
11:24 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/test.txt
11:24 PM Tom_L: no modification
11:25 PM Tom_L: to the post
11:25 PM Tom_L: i did set everything up for inch though
11:25 PM Tom_L: and it spit out a G21
11:25 PM Tom_L: need to check into that
11:30 PM Tom_L: seems to
11:30 PM Tom_L: just imported an iges
11:31 PM _unreal_: hum
11:31 PM _unreal_: interesting
