01:44 AM drdoc: meet Zoe!
01:49 AM sensille: hello Zoe
02:02 AM drdoc: sensille: one of my cats took a stroll on my keyboard
02:02 AM sensille: can she type her name?
02:15 AM drdoc: maybe this was it in cat-speak:
02:15 AM drdoc: \\\\\r5ttttttttttttttttttttttt5555555555555555555555555555555555'/
02:15 AM drdoc: :-)
02:28 AM sensille: now you know her true name, use the power wisely!
02:33 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/30/us/california-fires-santa-ana-winds.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage check out the winds
03:13 AM Deejay: moin
04:33 AM XXCoder: pink_vampire: nice
04:33 AM pink_vampire: thanks!
04:39 AM miss0r: g'day
04:40 AM miss0r: I just bought this mill. (Not actual one on photo) https://media.exapro.com/product/2017/02/P70206110/c9624958808399dae7ad406dd76205ad/maho-mh-500w-cnc-vertical-milling-machine-p70206110_4.jpg
04:40 AM XXCoder: interesting design
04:40 AM XXCoder: looks like can open side too?
04:41 AM pink_vampire: miss0r: look very nice
04:41 AM miss0r: XXCoder: Yes. They can fold down to open up completely
04:41 AM miss0r: pink_vampire: Thanks
04:42 AM XXCoder: cool :)
04:43 AM miss0r: It has spend its life since new(1997) in the danish equivalent of MIT's proto type shop, up until two years ago when this furniture plant bought it, and decided it wasn't for them, putting it in the back to sit idle. Then I came along and offered ~2k eur, and got it :)
04:45 AM jthornton: morning
04:45 AM miss0r: but it is all very exciting... because it has been sitting idle for so long the internal battery has decharged and it has dropped all its machine constants (very common error on these type controllers), so I haven't been able to confirm the state of the axis ect. That is why I lowballed the offer :D
04:45 AM miss0r: goodmorning jt
04:48 AM XXCoder: can yu reset the constrants?
04:48 AM XXCoder: or just plan to rip stuff out and replace?
04:55 AM jthornton: weird hand wheel inside
04:56 AM XXCoder: it looks like it can be manual?
04:56 AM miss0r: it cannot be manual. Those handwheels are feeding back to the controller
04:56 AM miss0r: I can reinstall the constants - it even came with a USB dongle with the constants on it
04:56 AM XXCoder: fake manual?
04:56 AM miss0r: something like that
04:56 AM miss0r: DMG is famous for this :)
04:57 AM jthornton: yea if I don't power up the BP Discovery 308 the CMOS loses it's brain and I have to reset the type of drive
04:58 AM XXCoder: machines at work is basically never off
05:00 AM miss0r: The issue with these philips controllers (432 & 532) are they consume a ridiculous amount of electricity to run the memory.
05:00 AM miss0r: Which is why they should be turned *atleast* once a month for a few hours, or this WILL happen
05:01 AM miss0r: They are even equipped with a 6v 16amp/hour battery (AGM)
05:17 AM jthornton: https://youtu.be/GrWeLV3LArw
05:18 AM jthornton: do you think I need subtitles?
05:19 AM miss0r: Someone needs to say something for subtitles to be relevant, right?
05:20 AM jthornton: no audio track yet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yva_FaMxdiE
05:21 AM jthornton: that one has subtitles
05:21 AM miss0r: That is an excellent idea to do
05:21 AM miss0r: It realy helps the viewer know what is up
05:22 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:22 AM jthornton: I thought it was better than rambling on like most videos with lots of uh yea opps
05:23 AM jthornton: ok I'll add subtitles, it's easy in Olive
05:24 AM Tom_L: morning
05:24 AM miss0r: morning, tom
05:24 AM Tom_L: 23°F
05:25 AM jthornton: 38°F
05:32 AM Tom_L: oh
05:32 AM Tom_L: well that kinda sucks
05:33 AM XXCoder: lemme test
05:33 AM Tom_L: do all the basic ones show by default?
05:33 AM Tom_L: geometry, constraints etc
05:33 AM XXCoder: its set according to mode its in
05:34 AM XXCoder: it saved
05:34 AM jthornton: the positions are saved
05:34 AM XXCoder: wow
05:34 AM XXCoder: i got used to just dealing to bad positons
05:34 AM XXCoder: because it dont save before
05:35 AM XXCoder: awesome :D now I can set it in way that makes sense to me
05:36 AM Tom_L: i want .18?
05:36 AM jthornton: aye
05:36 AM Tom_L: you make it look easy so it must be a decent tutorial :)
05:37 AM jthornton: lol
05:37 AM XXCoder: tom pro doing something always look easy
05:37 AM Tom_L: i've see some on f360 that seem to jump all over hell's country and back to get something accomplished
05:37 AM XXCoder: till you do it
05:38 AM Tom_L: shouldn't be too bad, i know catia pretty well and play with sw a little
05:38 AM jthornton: yea I hate the ones that have the author in the corner or lots of hand waving and crap
05:39 AM Tom_L: sit a chicken front and center by the keyboard :)
05:39 AM XXCoder: face ones tend to be not worth showing faces. I mean why?
05:40 AM jthornton: they are trying to be something they are not...
05:40 AM Tom_L: XXCoder they want recognition
05:40 AM XXCoder: sure, just face a bit explaining goal
05:40 AM XXCoder: then do stuff
05:40 AM jthornton: too bad they don't realize that most people will just not watch their crap videos
05:41 AM XXCoder: dont use 1000 words to discribe 10 words
05:41 AM jthornton: or spend 5 minutes explaining irrelevant crap
05:42 AM Tom_L: i learned how to disable my autostop last night with a car dealer explainging the dash pannel but it wasn't too bad
05:42 AM Tom_L: seems it can't be done permanently
05:42 AM jthornton: autostop?
05:42 AM Tom_L: come to a light and the car shuts off and restarts when you lift the brake
05:42 AM Tom_L: alot of cars are starting to do that
05:43 AM XXCoder: that'd be perfect for traffic conditions
05:43 AM Tom_L: it's very annoying
05:43 AM jthornton: yea both the honda hybrids we had/have do that, I'm use to it
05:43 AM jthornton: the hybrids use the big motor to start with I think
05:45 AM Tom_L: some you used to be able to turn it off/on in the settings but you can't on this one
05:45 AM Tom_L: it's on a per drive basis
05:57 AM Edoc is now known as RootCode
06:04 AM RootCode is now known as Edoc
06:53 AM Elmo40: miss0r, nice buy!
06:53 AM Elmo40: now, how much to ship to your place?
06:54 AM miss0r: Its almost local.. So I guess a few hundred eurs for the crane driver
06:54 AM miss0r: (or less, I know a guy)
06:55 AM miss0r: So yeah, I'm hoping atleast its a good purchase. Time will tell when i get it running and start doing some measurements for wear
07:03 AM jthornton: wow 11k views https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUTDNfoAy3c
07:04 AM sensille: and now 11k+1
07:05 AM jthornton: actually 11,780 now
07:05 AM jthornton: I built that for the guy operating the chain fall
07:23 AM net|: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aePsbv6WiA << ghost projector
08:10 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRPMxOT1sM8
08:31 AM drdoc: jthornton: bookmarked, and thanks! Subtitles are a huge thing for me - I'm essentially deaf
08:31 AM drdoc: and YouTube's derived subtitles are laughable
08:34 AM drdoc: Fun Fact: one of my car professors was forbidden by the school to enable automatic subtitles in her YouTube tutorials.
08:34 AM drdoc: sometime about her doctor made every other word get interpreted as an obscenity
08:36 AM JT-Shop: lol
08:36 AM JT-Shop: I agree about generated subtitles
08:36 AM JT-Shop: I hope I didn't go to fast
08:37 AM drdoc: spacebar always works if you did
08:37 AM drdoc: to fast is better than too slow
08:38 AM JT-Shop: ok thanks for the feedback
08:39 AM drdoc: I (obviously) hate the trend of using exclusively YouTube for documentation. Video is a great supplement to good text. It's a horrible sole source.
08:40 AM drdoc: Even dead tree documents have an index...
08:40 AM JT-Shop: yep, don't show me a video on programming something in python lol
08:40 AM drdoc: exactly
08:42 AM * JT-Shop goes to pick up chicken shit
08:42 AM drdoc: anyway, thanks. Good training told have always been the downfall of open source CAD/CAM tools
10:35 AM Loetmichel: hmm, need advice: front door 1024mm by 60mm for a CNC router made of a makrolon sheeet: better 4mm sheet or is 3mm sufficient to close well enough?
10:37 AM Rab: 60mm or 600mm?
10:38 AM Loetmichel: 600mm
10:39 AM Loetmichel: <- sausage fingers:-)
10:39 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17553&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- the orange sheet
10:40 AM Rab: That's a large sheet, I'd think you'd want the thickest available.
10:41 AM Rab: But unless you're milling steel, you could use magnets for closure and that might support a more flexible sheet.
10:41 AM Rab: Or add an aluminum frame.
10:58 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: theres also thermal expansion to consider
10:59 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: are you just going to cement it together?
11:00 AM jymmmm: Loetmichel: ...or use aluminum angle for the edges (frame)?
11:49 AM Loetmichel: soo, first of two CNC-housings done, working router in and in the right place in the shop... now doing the second one... and just ordered the Polycarbonate sheets for the front doors :-) -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17586&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
11:50 AM pink_vampire: Loetmichel: very nicely done!
11:57 AM jthornton: very nice cabinet and well lit up
11:59 AM Loetmichel: light is importatn if you do 0.4mm diameter milll bits :-)
12:02 PM Loetmichel: also the router is mounted with 24 M6 screws thru the x rails from below
12:02 PM Loetmichel: so that "flexing" at least on x is no issue any more :-)
12:10 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: it was prrevusly?
12:11 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: that cabinet looks like meamine, are you replacing it with polycarb?
12:11 PM jymmmm: Loetmichel: ...or just using polycarb for the doors?
12:37 PM CaptHindsight: lights on jymmmm ?
12:38 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Yeah, power was restored arou.... DISCONNECTED
12:38 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: =)
12:38 PM jymmmm: around 3pm yesterday
12:39 PM CaptHindsight: is it windy at your location?
12:39 PM CaptHindsight: NY Times had video of the high winds
12:41 PM CaptHindsight: 60-80mph https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/30/us/california-fires-santa-ana-winds.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
12:43 PM jymmmm: CaptHindsight: Not today
12:43 PM jymmmm: and it hasn't been windy up here like they have been predicting
12:43 PM jymmmm: Maybe OTHER areas, but not here.
12:44 PM jymmmm: During Campfire, the area whee the fire start tends to get 60MPH, then takes off from there
01:10 PM Loetmichel: jymmmm: it was a bit. the supported rails could flex a bit, especially because the router was standing on 4 rubber feet on the corners
01:10 PM Loetmichel: the cabinet is made of 18mm marine plywood ("siebdruckplatte"), indeed that uses melamine as glue and surface
01:10 PM CaptHindsight: snow on the ground before November
01:10 PM Loetmichel: IIRC its 15 ply or so
01:10 PM Loetmichel: polycarb just for the front door
01:11 PM Loetmichel: and the side "slots" for loading materials thru
01:11 PM Loetmichel: look at the cad: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17553
01:12 PM Loetmichel: everything orange is meant to be 4mm polycarb
01:12 PM Loetmichel: oh. Sorry, forgot to design the side doors
01:12 PM Tom_L: i used 1/4" on mine
01:13 PM CaptHindsight: I'd expect the whole cabinet to wiggle a bit
01:13 PM Loetmichel: they are simply two small plates that slot in on guide rails on the inside of said "loading openings"
01:13 PM CaptHindsight: does it shimmy and shake when it makes fast moves?
01:13 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: mine?
01:13 PM Loetmichel: not any more
01:13 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17586
01:13 PM Tom_L: wheel locks
01:14 PM Loetmichel: it weights about 100kg without the machine in
01:14 PM Loetmichel: and it has bluewheels with locks on the front
01:14 PM Loetmichel: indeed, Tom_L
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: 60 x 40 cm bed?
01:15 PM Loetmichel: yes
01:16 PM Loetmichel: the second (actually THIS is the second one) machine gets the same treatment... its like this at the moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7eO5cu-fXg
01:16 PM Loetmichel: built TWO boxes.
01:17 PM Loetmichel: just finished one so we have a working router at the company before dismantling the old one
01:17 PM Loetmichel: hopefully tomorrow evening both are back to being operational
01:17 PM CaptHindsight: most distributors around here only stock 3mm plexi in colors
01:17 PM Loetmichel: and then i will wait for the ordered 4mm polycarb and the 6mm pertinax to build the vacuum table out of
01:18 PM CaptHindsight: sometimes i combine 3mm clear with 3mm color and add a aluminum frame
01:28 PM Loetmichel: *GNHIHI* sometimes i am evil... just had a kid in costume ring the door bell... got out, noticed the kid, pressed the buzzer for the door... kid couldnt open the door (it has a very hard adjusted hydraulic closer installed)... looked at the kid: "Sorry, cant open the door, no candy!"... (I forgot to buy some anyways)
01:30 PM CaptHindsight: is Halloween gaining some popularity there?
01:31 PM Loetmichel: slightly
01:31 PM Rab: Loetmichel, sounds like you're due for a trick.
01:32 PM roycroft: halloween is my second-most unwelcome day of the year
01:33 PM Loetmichel: Rab: doubt it
01:33 PM Loetmichel: that kid was maybe 5 or so
01:35 PM roycroft: usually i can close up the house, turn off the lights in all street-facing rooms, the kids will stay away
01:35 PM roycroft: today, though, i have two parcels arriving via ups, and they will be delivered during prime candy-begging time
01:37 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: nicely our delivery guys know to throw the packages on the balcony
01:37 PM Loetmichel: :-)
01:37 PM Loetmichel: s/nicely/fortunately
01:37 PM roycroft: one of the parcels is a cast iron lathe chuck backing plate
01:37 PM roycroft: i should hope it's not going to be thrown anywhere
01:38 PM roycroft: on the other hand it's not something a young candy better is going to want to lug around - it weighs about 6kg
01:38 PM roycroft: begger
01:39 PM roycroft: i'd still rather not leave the parcels sitting out on my front porch for more than about 9 seconds
01:40 PM roycroft: i have some work to do in my welding shop - that's not attached to the main house, and i can see when the truck arrives from out there, so i might just hang out there until ups arrive
01:44 PM Tom_L: what a cop out
01:44 PM Tom_L: feed those little candy grubbin bastards...
01:47 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: forgot about it entirely
01:48 PM Loetmichel: i simply have no candy in house
01:48 PM Loetmichel: not even some apples or similar
01:48 PM roycroft: it's actually not a big problem here any more
01:48 PM roycroft: i live on a dead-end street that is mostly populated by empty-nesters
01:48 PM roycroft: hardly any beggers show up
01:49 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: "DINKs"?
01:50 PM Rab: That's something else.
01:50 PM roycroft: years ago i used to bake nice, tasty, but healthy treats for the kiddies
01:50 PM roycroft: but i can't do that any more
01:50 PM roycroft: i'd likely be arrested
01:50 PM Loetmichel: harhar
01:51 PM Loetmichel: probably, yes
01:51 PM Loetmichel: Rab: i meant "Double Income, No Kids"
01:51 PM Loetmichel: it was a question what "empty nesters" are
01:52 PM Rab: Loetmichel, as I suspected. But that usually indicates a childless couple, not a couple after their children have moved out.
01:52 PM roycroft: nobody can be trusted anymore, you know
01:52 PM roycroft: especially not that hippie guy who lives in the middle of a trumpland neighborhood
01:52 PM Loetmichel: Rab: ah!
01:53 PM roycroft: i'm a prius driver surrounded by 4wd pickups
01:53 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: i pity you
01:53 PM Tom_L: haha i bet that goes well in the neighborhood
01:53 PM Loetmichel: (but i would probably own an 1969 F250 or the likes would i live in the US... no trum supporter though
01:54 PM Loetmichel: here in germany those trucks are insanely expensive sadly
01:54 PM Tom_L: gotta have a an 8' merican flag flappin out the back of the bed too
01:54 PM Loetmichel: not only if that old, also 8-10 years old
01:54 PM roycroft: i could not do much worse in the eyes of my neighbors
01:55 PM roycroft: but handing out treats that even remotely resemble granloa and that are not hermetically sealed by some big corporate factory to little kids would definitely be worse
01:55 PM Tom_L: yeah there was a time...
01:55 PM Tom_L: not anymore
01:55 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: nope, but i would like to take such and old "barn find" truck, throw out the big block, install a tesla drive unit, some batterys and a 10kW diesel genset on the bed ;)
01:56 PM roycroft: speaking of whic, today's wondermark is fun:
01:56 PM roycroft: http://wondermark.com
01:56 PM Loetmichel: THAT would be a fun hybrid ;)
01:57 PM roycroft: i still have a '65 vw bus that i want to covert to an elektrobus
01:57 PM roycroft: it's a perfect vehicle for that
01:57 PM roycroft: 1 ton chassis
01:58 PM roycroft: lots of room in between the wheels for batteries
01:58 PM Tom_L: used to have a 62 pristine bug
01:58 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: razorbladed apples? is/was that a thing??
01:58 PM roycroft: it's rumoured to have been a thing
01:58 PM Loetmichel: sounds nasty
01:58 PM Tom_L: yes
01:58 PM roycroft: i suspect most reported cases of it are urban legends
01:58 PM Tom_L: that _was_ a thing
01:58 PM roycroft: but some were real
01:59 PM roycroft: i do not believe the razor blades were ever inserted in the apples in the manner suggested by that comic strip
01:59 PM Loetmichel: i dont think so
02:00 PM Loetmichel: by the time the apples are ripe the blades would be just a thin rust stain in the apple
02:02 PM roycroft: unless they were made of stainless steel
02:02 PM roycroft: but even then, the acidity of the apples might have caused some corrosion
02:02 PM roycroft: does platinum hold a good edge?
02:03 PM Rab: There are "platinum" safety razor blades, I don't know how much platinum they actually hold.
02:03 PM Rab: roycroft, consider this safe & healthful alternative: https://hackaday.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/hallomg800.jpg
02:06 PM Loetmichel: Rab: that looks like a VERY effective way to make a really big botnet with minimal effort from your side ;)
02:52 PM XXCoder: most cases of drug or bladed candies or fruits was from parents
02:52 PM XXCoder: so its quite rare but always careful anyway
02:52 PM XXCoder: drugs is expensive too lol
02:58 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: or accidents
02:59 PM Loetmichel: i remember vaguely a story about "mom, have you seen the full tray of those odd looking cakes i made yesteday?" "yes, i gave them to the halloween kids, why?"
02:59 PM XXCoder: loet that usb yeah lol massssive botnet
03:00 PM Loetmichel: "because that were space cakes with enough weed in it to last about a week!"
04:53 PM Deejay: gn8
04:54 PM _unreal_: hello
04:55 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, What do you think? should I go with the core 2 quad or a pentium D for this system
04:55 PM _unreal_: to drive the cnc machine?
05:04 PM roycroft: _unreal_: if you're using something like a mesa card to drive to talk to the cnc machine the cpu doesn't really matter much
05:04 PM roycroft: if you're using a parallel port to talk to the cnc machine the cpu doesn't really matter much
05:05 PM roycroft: but the latency of the supporting chipset does matter
05:05 PM _unreal_: parallel
05:05 PM roycroft: then you need a system board with low latency on the pci bus
05:06 PM roycroft: and that's not a function of the cpu
05:06 PM _unreal_: ok
05:06 PM _unreal_: is there a BOARD list?
05:06 PM roycroft: a few years ago one of the best boards had an atom processor
05:06 PM roycroft: fairly slow cpu, but the board had really low latency, and it works great with a parallel port
05:06 PM _unreal_: I have 3 socket 775 computers
05:06 PM roycroft: there used to be a list
05:07 PM roycroft: i don't know if anyone is maintaining it currently
05:07 PM _unreal_: a dual core celeron, a core2quad and a pentium D
05:07 PM roycroft: nor do i recall where to find it
05:07 PM roycroft: bu i'm sure someone in the know will speak up eventually
05:07 PM _unreal_: all of my old pcs I would assume would be on or off the list they are old enough
05:08 PM _unreal_: amazing how ya always get difference responces
05:08 PM _unreal_: thats why I ask the same quetsion multi times at times
05:08 PM _unreal_: :)
05:14 PM Tom_L: so who ya gonna believe?
05:14 PM enleth: random question time: do you know what polymer are the modern port-a-potties made of?
05:15 PM enleth: or those modular wall/floor/ceiling panels that train and airplane toilets are made of
05:15 PM Tom_L: Polyurethane is the most common plastic used to make today's porta potties. Companies have also developed chemicals to aid in biodegrading solid waste and making the toilets smell better.
05:16 PM roycroft: my best advise would be to send jt some cash and get a nice, shiny mesa board from him, then use whatever system board you have laying around or can procure easily/inexpensively
05:17 PM jthornton: old PC's run best usually on old OS's so saying that I still have my Hardinge on Ubuntu 10.04...
05:18 PM jymmmm: jthornton: And what's REALLY funny... shiny new hardware does NOT make ancient OS'es run faster, I've tried it =)
05:24 PM SpeedEvil: SSDs do
05:38 PM jthornton: yea they sorta have to be from the same era
05:40 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, wrong question.. its WHO ya gana call
05:40 PM _unreal_: I just got off the phone with autodesk
05:41 PM _unreal_: aparently my account is fucked up and I have no END of subscription date LOL
05:41 PM _unreal_: the woman litteraly said wait WHAT THE HELL?
05:41 PM _unreal_: LOL
05:42 PM _unreal_: There is a promo for 30% off LOCKED in annual account so its like $300 for the FULL copy of ofusion
05:42 PM _unreal_: i was asking a few quetsions
05:43 PM roycroft: i've received several letters from autodesk about fusion 350
05:43 PM roycroft: 360
05:43 PM roycroft: i wish they would leave me alont
05:43 PM roycroft: alone
05:43 PM _unreal_: 350 is that like the celeron version?
05:43 PM _unreal_: LOL
05:43 PM roycroft: i have told them several times that i'm not using their software and don't want to use it
05:43 PM _unreal_: asking what?
05:44 PM _unreal_: ya I have an other company thats always calling me
05:44 PM roycroft: but they insist on repeatedly informing me that if i'm using it for "hobby" use i can continue to use it for free, with restricted functionality
05:44 PM roycroft: but they really want me to give them money for their "startup" version
05:44 PM roycroft: i've received letters in the mail, emails, and phone calls from them
05:45 PM roycroft: i'm not sure what part of "i don't use your software and am not interested in using it" they don't understand
05:45 PM roycroft: i did try it out
05:45 PM roycroft: and i had to give them my information to do so
05:45 PM roycroft: i guess they think that gives them a license to harass me forever
05:46 PM roycroft: this all started out with my having zero interest in giving it another go
05:46 PM roycroft: and every time the contact me i'm even less interested
05:48 PM _unreal_: meshcam
05:48 PM _unreal_: they are always calling me
05:48 PM jthornton: you should try bobcrap if you really want to get bothered everyday lol
05:48 PM _unreal_: I need to buy a copy saddly
05:48 PM _unreal_: I do so much cad work for the company I work for
05:49 PM _unreal_: I have to own a copy of fusion
05:49 PM _unreal_: Besides If I own it I get paid more :)
05:49 PM roycroft: i just want some cam software
05:49 PM roycroft: i have an old copy of solidworks
05:49 PM roycroft: but no cam plugin for it
05:49 PM roycroft: that's the thing about fusion 360
05:49 PM _unreal_: I mainly use carbide3d, fusion360 and estlcam
05:50 PM roycroft: it doesn't really offer me anything that solidworks doesn't have, other than the cam stuff
05:50 PM roycroft: and it has the HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE drawback of insisting on storing stuff in their cloud
05:50 PM _unreal_: There are a few online cam programs I've used now and then
05:50 PM _unreal_: roycroft, I dont store any of my fusion360 stuff in cloud
05:50 PM roycroft: i don't know how you can't do that
05:50 PM roycroft: i tried
05:51 PM _unreal_: ?
05:51 PM _unreal_: wtf are you tlaking about. you click save to local
05:51 PM roycroft: but after a while the software refused to run again until it called home and synched everything
05:51 PM _unreal_: click safe, then save local
05:51 PM roycroft: yes, i had local copies of my stuff
05:51 PM roycroft: but they absolutely insisted on calling home
05:52 PM _unreal_: they have software updates every day to every few days as far as I can tell
05:52 PM _unreal_: small stuff you never see
05:52 PM _unreal_: the new "layout" I FUCKING HATE
05:53 PM _unreal_: roycroft, interestling I have a Free business account
05:53 PM roycroft: not for long
05:53 PM _unreal_: I have access to everything BUT support
05:53 PM _unreal_: no
05:53 PM _unreal_: the woman said there was oddly no experation date on my account and she couldnt do anything about it
05:54 PM _unreal_: so in a way maybe I just fucked my self
05:54 PM _unreal_: but I need the business class version anyways
05:57 PM roycroft: i refuse to rent software
05:57 PM roycroft: i either pay for it with a perpetual license or i don't use it
05:57 PM roycroft: period
05:58 PM roycroft: it's a good thing i'm getting old, because perpetual licenses are going away and will be a thing of the past before long
05:59 PM roycroft: and i'll be stuck with the software i have for the rest of my life
06:17 PM _unreal_: ok taking my daughter out tricker treating
06:17 PM _unreal_: later
06:18 PM Tom_L: don't steal her candy
06:39 PM andypugh: I can’t upgrade my Mac as Apple are ceasing dupport for 32-bit, but my version of Microsoft Office is 32 bit, and they just don’t sell it any more.
06:41 PM jymmmm: andypugh: virtualbox?
06:41 PM jymmmm: oh ffice for mac
06:41 PM jymmmm: convert your license?
06:42 PM roycroft: i stopped using office:mac a long time ago
06:42 PM roycroft: libreoffice works fine on a mac
06:42 PM jymmmm: or that
06:43 PM roycroft: but yeah, i'm going through all my apps, determining which ones won't run on catalina and figuring out whether i can upgrade them or if i need to find replacements for them
06:43 PM roycroft: it's going to cost me a heap of money in the end
06:43 PM andypugh: I have 2011 as that was cheap via work. But I left it too late to upgrade, and now the only option is Office 365 subscription.
06:44 PM andypugh: Or not bothering with Catalina
06:49 PM roycroft: the problem with not bothering with catalina is that in a year or so apple will stop providing updates for mojave, nad your web browser will break
06:49 PM roycroft: and your mail client
07:41 PM Tom_L: anybody else try freecad?
07:41 PM Tom_L: just downloaded it to look at
07:42 PM roycroft: i've played with it a bit
07:42 PM roycroft: i need to invest some time with it
07:42 PM Tom_L: if you make a sketch on a face is there a way to constrain elements to the face edges?
07:42 PM Tom_L: it has no concentric constraints either
07:42 PM roycroft: my initial impression is that it has a long way to go before it's really good, but it has the basic elements of a parametric 3d modeling program
07:43 PM roycroft: it's not terribly well integrated
07:43 PM roycroft: and i'm not sure what i think of that
07:43 PM Tom_L: need to figure a way to restrain elements with previously created elements
07:43 PM roycroft: i.e. it has a bunch of different tools to do different things, and they don't flow well together
07:43 PM Tom_L: doesn't seem to be much interaction
07:44 PM Tom_L: i'm not terribly concerned about the flow just that the tools are there to use
07:44 PM roycroft: i'm still looking for solidworks + cam capability without spending thousands of dollars more on parametric 3d modeling software
07:45 PM roycroft: well i've not spent enough time with it yet to determine whether the tools are all there to do what i need to do
07:45 PM roycroft: and my needs are fairly simple
07:45 PM Tom_L: i've got software already i just wanted to take a peek at this
07:45 PM roycroft: i plan on investing some time in it fairly soon
07:45 PM roycroft: the days are getting shorter
07:45 PM roycroft: so i'll have a few months where i spend more time in the office than in the shop
07:46 PM * roycroft wishes ups would show up so he can get on with other things
07:54 PM _unreal_: I'm back
07:54 PM _unreal_: kid got a ton of candy
07:54 PM _unreal_: yippy
08:07 PM drdoc: roycroft: In the late '60s & early '70s, razor blades in Halloween apples was definitely a thing
08:08 PM drdoc: as well as rat poison & LSD
08:10 PM drdoc: very few actual deaths, but it only took a couple to make a BIG impression.
08:12 PM drdoc: new ChinaCo breakout board arrived today, and I have a breakout board for the A4988 drivers bodged up in Eagle
08:12 PM jdh: only takes a little cyanide in tylenol to change all consumer packaging
08:12 PM drdoc: jdh: exactly
08:13 PM _unreal_: drdoc, just got the full version of fusion360
08:13 PM _unreal_: took the 30% off for ever deal
08:13 PM drdoc: I can't remember where or when, but some guy poisoned something like a dozen kids one year with rat poison in... cookies I think
08:14 PM drdoc: IIRC none of them died, but the police had to keep a literal lynch mob away from him when the neighborhood figured out who dunnit
08:15 PM drdoc: _unreal_: saw that in the backscroll
08:16 PM drdoc: I'm starting to think that I'll have access to the Solidworks Pro I'm using forever
08:17 PM drdoc: old job set it up with online licensing so I could work from home, and never hired another CAD Guy after I quit
08:17 PM drdoc: now the shop's tanking
08:18 PM drdoc: Owner's putting it up his nose
08:18 PM drdoc: _unreal_: Fusion's ok. It'd be a lot better if Autodesk treated it like a product
08:20 PM drdoc: the GRBL post processor's busted, has been for years, Autodesk knows it, and the current post, updated weeks ago, still has the same 3 lines that are the worst problem
08:21 PM drdoc: Tom_L: The Amazon seller from whom I got that first breakout board pulled the product the day after I RMA'd mine
08:23 PM drdoc: hopefully the new one's got decent 245 chips
08:25 PM drdoc: _unreal_: didja get your daughter's mill going?
08:31 PM _unreal_: not yet
08:31 PM _unreal_: no time
08:31 PM _unreal_: just got back from tricker treating
08:31 PM _unreal_: I need to make one more part so mount the last motor
08:31 PM _unreal_: have yet to get to it
08:31 PM _unreal_: ALSO
08:31 PM _unreal_: I dont have a pen holder designed or built yet
08:31 PM _unreal_: going to be a few weeks yet
09:01 PM Tom_L: freecad iges seems to be ok
09:07 PM * drdoc is playing with KiCad
09:07 PM drdoc: there's a whole lotta RTFM goin on
09:31 PM _unreal_: hello
09:31 PM _unreal_: iges?
09:32 PM _unreal_: what is iges
09:32 PM _unreal_: heh
09:32 PM _unreal_: I'm ok at kicad
09:38 PM Tom_L: Initial Graphics Exchange Specification
09:39 PM Tom_L: a vendor-neutral file format that allows the digital exchange of information among computer-aided design (CAD) systems
09:41 PM drdoc: a STEP file, but much better
09:41 PM _unreal_: hum
09:42 PM drdoc: sorry, kindo of like a STEP file
09:42 PM drdoc: _unreal_: the library management in kicad is infuriating
09:43 PM _unreal_: yes it is :) What are you trying to od
09:43 PM _unreal_: do
09:43 PM _unreal_: I faught it till I won a few years ago
09:43 PM drdoc: import a device - symbol & footprint
09:43 PM _unreal_: ok
09:44 PM _unreal_: I'm starting up kicad right now
09:44 PM _unreal_: I typically import them from a web site that I cant for the life of me remember the name of
09:44 PM drdoc: got the symbol ok, but the footprint shows Status: INVALID when I use the Add Libraries Wizard
09:45 PM drdoc: SnapED?
09:45 PM drdoc: SnapEDA
09:45 PM _unreal_: snapeda?
09:45 PM drdoc: the website
09:45 PM _unreal_: ya thats prob one of them
09:46 PM drdoc: they want my name, address, phone # and bra size
09:47 PM _unreal_: ((:) what is your bra size
09:48 PM drdoc: 44B
09:48 PM drdoc: moobs
09:48 PM drdoc: :-p
09:51 PM _unreal_: heh
09:51 PM _unreal_: your such a boob ;)
09:54 PM _unreal_: soo
09:57 PM drdoc: So, I signed up, waiting for the confirmation email
09:57 PM _unreal_: ?
09:57 PM _unreal_: signed up for what?
09:57 PM drdoc: snapeda
09:57 PM _unreal_: oh
09:57 PM _unreal_: heh
09:57 PM _unreal_: ya there ok
09:57 PM drdoc: supposed to be like GrabCAD for electronics
09:57 PM _unreal_: they dont have everything but I normally find what I'm looking for
09:58 PM drdoc: cool
09:58 PM drdoc: they do have what I need right now
09:58 PM drdoc: lets see if I can associate their footprint with the symbol I already used
09:59 PM drdoc: ....and sometime while I was doing all that, kicad crashed
10:07 PM _unreal_: so hat are you building?
10:45 PM _unreal_: ?
11:31 PM drdoc: _unreal_: sorry, had to go in to dinner
11:32 PM drdoc: making a simple breakout board for the A4988/DRV8825 drivers
11:33 PM drdoc: partly because I don't like using the GRBL shield, mostly as a small, single-sided practice piece
11:34 PM drdoc: I've never milled a PCB before
11:38 PM Elmo40: how will you hold it down?
11:41 PM drdoc: I've had good luck with painter's tape
11:42 PM drdoc: put it on the table and on the workpiece, then superglue tape to tape
11:43 PM drdoc: put the tape on the waste board and on the workpiece, I meant
11:44 PM drdoc: it holds surprisingly well
