02:32 AM Deejay: moin
02:48 AM CaptHindsight: drdoc: yes
03:02 AM XXCoder: jthornton: ya what I meant by corners. something with sharp corners :)
03:03 AM XXCoder: sorry i wasnt clear lol
05:05 AM jthornton: morning
05:05 AM jthornton: ah yea something sharp on the road
05:08 AM XXCoder: hey :)
05:19 AM pingufan: Hello, is an Elnglish native speaker here, please? I need a little help in translating.
05:20 AM Tom_L: morning
05:27 AM jthornton: morning
05:31 AM Tom_L: drdoc, yes
05:31 AM Tom_L: it's easier anyway
08:39 AM JT-Shop: one frame done
11:47 AM JT-Shop: second frame done, polycarbonate in kiln drying
12:54 PM CaptHindsight: JT-Shop: porous polycarbonate?
01:00 PM SpeedEvil: CaptHindsight: All polycarbonate is porous to water and absorbs it.
01:01 PM SpeedEvil: If you do not dry it at ~80-100C for a few hours before use (if it has been exposed to the air) when you heat it to softening at ~150C or whatever, it 'popcorns' and the steam inside flashes to water, and you get a ridiculous number of bubbles.
01:01 PM SpeedEvil: Which even if you do not care about them cosemtically are stress risers.
01:02 PM SpeedEvil: A large number of plastics will absorb quite a large amount of water.
01:04 PM JT-Shop2: polycarbonate is hygroscopic like a sponge
01:07 PM SpeedEvil: https://omnexus.specialchem.com/polymer-properties/properties/water-absorption-24-hours
01:08 PM SpeedEvil: ~.15% for example for PC - 0.005% for HDPE
01:08 PM SpeedEvil: (1% for PA66)
01:10 PM Rab: Hmm...so what of sealed polycarbonate enclosures? Is dessicant needed, or is no significant amount of moisture released from the interior walls?
01:12 PM JT-Shop: hmm I've been drying at 121C
01:12 PM JT-Shop: so I only need 80-100C?
01:12 PM JT-Shop: it's a scrap part anyway...
01:15 PM SpeedEvil: JT-Shop: numbers were estimates, I diddn't look up
01:15 PM JT-Shop: ok
01:15 PM SpeedEvil: Rab: Polycarbonate is also not a great moisture barrier, but if it's thick enough, it may not be an issue.
01:17 PM JT-Shop: this is 3/32" sheet
01:20 PM SpeedEvil: Air sealing is the major issue then.
01:20 PM SpeedEvil: But dessicant is nearly free if you get the right sorts.
01:20 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sophisticat-Citycat-Crystal-Litter-3-8Ltr/dp/B003Y3UI98
01:20 PM jym: What are we "sealing"?
01:26 PM Rab: A perfectly cubic cow.
01:28 PM SpeedEvil: IMO, a $10 2.5kg sack of the above dessicant, and a $3 humidity sensor is a good plan.
01:32 PM Jymmm: Does anyone like pumpkin, or stuffed/baked pumpkin?
01:36 PM t4nk_freenode: yes
01:36 PM t4nk_freenode: many do
01:36 PM t4nk_freenode: not me though
01:37 PM t4nk_freenode: but the claim can be confirmed
01:38 PM t4nk_freenode: mayb it's because we don't do halloween, but I hardly ever saw a pumpkin in my life
01:38 PM t4nk_freenode: irl
01:39 PM CaptHindsight: SpeedEvil: really, polymers have holes?
01:39 PM SpeedEvil: :)
01:39 PM t4nk_freenode: ah yes... the logging on the chan.. */me goes quiet mode again pr0nt0*
01:48 PM Jymmm: Ghapama, many variations... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqrmrUV7FY8 - http://www.ianyanmag.com/ghapama-a-very-armenian-american-thanksgiving/ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU7vtBK085E
02:13 PM t4nk_freenode: thanksgiving too; we never heard of it
02:15 PM t4nk_freenode: I'd be terrified to get sth like that on my plate though; couldn't stop thinking the pumpkin would eat Me instead
02:17 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieT2qWFXrVo - that is quite a large bit of titanium bar.
02:41 PM CaptHindsight: SpeedEvil: did you know that those holes are what give polycarbonate its toughness?
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: and it's why its often used for windows since it lets water and oxygen through
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: and it's available in clear
02:52 PM XXCoder: SpeedEvil: cool video
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: SpeedEvil: do you happen to know what they use for the "box/sides" of sand molds in the UK? The support for the sides and bottom of a sand mold during transfer before pouring
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: wood?
03:14 PM SpeedEvil: Wood in the various UK vids I've seen
03:16 PM XXCoder: looked like regular wood, you cut slots on inside side
03:17 PM XXCoder: presumely to hold sand better
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: thanks, seems universal
03:34 PM ziper: CaptHindsight, they call them flasks I think
03:37 PM Deejay: gn8
03:38 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JbVdSLeR4w looks like ziper CaptHindsight
03:40 PM ziper: this video is triggering
03:40 PM XXCoder: in what way?
03:41 PM ziper: using a jigsaw instead of a circular saw, using a flap wheel on a grinder instead of a flat sanding surface. using straight head screws
03:41 PM XXCoder: ahh ya
03:41 PM ziper: and usually its a good idea to put something on the inside of the wood for the sand to hold onto
03:42 PM XXCoder: yeah like those grooves I menioned
03:42 PM XXCoder: I said slots but meant grooves lol
03:42 PM ziper: and its a good idea to build the alignment jig in such a way so that the cope and drag can't be put together backwards
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: when Andy cast some steel there they also used wood as I recall
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: my sand molds are held together by resin
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: so they hold their own shape
03:44 PM ziper: right, but if the flasks were perfectly smooth and rectangular on the inside, the sand would just slide right out
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: they don't need a flask but it does offer protection in transit
03:45 PM ziper: what kind of resin?
03:45 PM ziper: is it reusable?
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: I use photopolymers
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: I could make it reusable with either pulverizing or wash with water
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: but it hasn't been a big concern
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: it's just a really fast way of making molds, it's even faster than inkjet
03:48 PM ziper: how large?
03:49 PM CaptHindsight: as big as i want to make a printer, right now ~21" x 12"
03:50 PM ziper: 3d printed?
03:51 PM ziper: how does the detail compare to an investment cast, say, with PLA?
03:51 PM XXCoder: you should watch myfordboy casting stuff
03:51 PM XXCoder: he uses 3d printer now
03:51 PM XXCoder: he does a lot of post work on it and finally use high gloss paint
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: depends on the grain size of the sand
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: I can make investments with detail down to the few microns
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: sand is limited mostly by the size of the sand grains
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: https://imgur.com/IvelAIb this is the resolution using ~$2/bag clean, dry, sorted sand from a home builders supply store (Menards)
04:10 PM XXCoder: laser fusing?
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: no laser
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: just visible light
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/zvxoHUT
04:12 PM XXCoder: sla. interesting
04:12 PM XXCoder: sla with sand
04:12 PM XXCoder: or is it something qualitately different?
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: SLA is actually laser, it's what the L in it stands for
04:13 PM XXCoder: doh yea
04:13 PM JT-Shop: vacuum box and frame ready for another test... tomorrow
04:13 PM XXCoder: though people at reprap call lcd montior resin printers sla anyway lol
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: but everyone has bastardized the terms for additive manufacturing
04:14 PM XXCoder: yea
04:14 PM CaptHindsight: like 3D printer now generally means FDM,FFF CNC glue gun
04:14 PM CaptHindsight: vs an additive manufacturing printer
04:14 PM XXCoder: know what I want? SLS. That is what I want.
04:15 PM Rab: Patents are expiring, get to it!
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: SLS is selective laser sintering, generally used with thermoplastic powders
04:15 PM XXCoder: yep!
04:15 PM XXCoder: nylon creations
04:16 PM CaptHindsight: Rab: been making them for quite a while
04:16 PM XXCoder: I know theres other materials but nylon is one I want. well and maybe ti too
04:18 PM Rab: My homeboy just got a Prusa SL1 and showed me a test piece the other night...I was shocked at the detail, finish, and seeming durability.
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/ukGDmqf
04:19 PM XXCoder: looks like been left in storage?
04:19 PM XXCoder: stuff all over it lol
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: the table behind it
04:22 PM XXCoder: oh yeah! its cylnders thats sls containment area?>
04:23 PM XXCoder: been a while, forgot some details lol
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: yes
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: the problem with SLS is the cost of the thermoplastic powders
04:24 PM XXCoder: ya I guessed it;d be expensive.
04:24 PM CaptHindsight: they are trying to create a monopoly at the moment
04:24 PM XXCoder: in case of nylon in least, you gonna keep it out of wet air
04:24 PM CaptHindsight: in pellet form they are $2/lb
04:24 PM XXCoder: dunno on ti
04:24 PM CaptHindsight: in powder form $50 and up
04:24 PM XXCoder: ouch.
04:24 PM CaptHindsight: so it's not cost effective
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: it's profit effective
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: for the seller
04:25 PM XXCoder: i wonder if can take pellets and powderize it
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: so another phuked by industry after the patents expired
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: cryo grinding
04:26 PM CaptHindsight: hey andy
04:26 PM XXCoder: sounds expensive process
04:26 PM XXCoder: hey
04:26 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: while you were away RTAI got fixed
04:27 PM CaptHindsight: so if anyone wants to build new debs for testing all should be good to go on the RTAI source side
04:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/zKNtBAg here's the layer speed for the sand mold printer 21" x 12"
04:29 PM XXCoder: now thats nice usage of postit
04:29 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: here is SLS or SLA https://cncstuff.imgur.com/all
04:30 PM XXCoder: "Zoinks! You've taken a wrong turn."
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: SLA just doesn't melt/sinter the materials
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: it just triggers polymerization of a liquid resin
04:30 PM XXCoder: i know. it needs cure
04:30 PM XXCoder: some by light, some by uv, etc
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: so the laser is different
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: the galvos operate the same
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: but they have different optics and mirros
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: mirrors
04:31 PM XXCoder: not surpising
04:52 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder: I got brave and went up to 100' and shot a video without looking at the drone lol
04:52 PM XXCoder: amazing view I bet!
04:53 PM XXCoder: does it have return to gps locatio?
04:54 PM JT-Shop: yes it has Return to Home button and it sets home just before take off
04:54 PM JT-Shop: or you can set it some other place if your brave
04:55 PM JT-Shop: the lowest it will return to home is 20 meters
04:55 PM XXCoder: nice
04:55 PM JT-Shop: but if you have anything taller you need to set the rth height higher
04:56 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop got pics?
04:56 PM JT-Shop: it also has a land button
04:56 PM JT-Shop: yea but can't upload 1.5GB behind :(
04:57 PM Tom_L: aww
04:57 PM JT-Shop: pics of the drone?
04:57 PM Tom_L: both
04:57 PM JT-Shop: or the movie I shot
04:57 PM Tom_L: how's the vacuum form setup coming?
04:57 PM JT-Shop: a couple of movies on youtube.com/gnipsel
04:58 PM JT-Shop: another failure today but also learned a lot, had to add handles to the frame and put a wider seal on the vacuum box
04:59 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: https://youtu.be/Z8MaVaqNr3U?t=135 this is closer to my target applications
05:00 PM JT-Shop: seems I've not uploaded any photos to my gallery
05:00 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L: I need an oven door so I can see the droop without opening the door
05:01 PM JT-Shop: I think tomorrow I might get a part
05:01 PM Tom_L: heh
05:01 PM Tom_L: i think seeing the droop is key
05:02 PM JT-Shop: yea, I think so
05:02 PM JT-Shop: if I had room I'd just get a used oven and use that lol
05:03 PM drdoc: SpeedEvil: is that cat litter silica gel?
05:03 PM drdoc: Tom_L: thanks!
05:03 PM SpeedEvil: yes
05:04 PM drdoc: it doesn't help much where I live
05:04 PM drdoc: at least not for ~8 months a year
05:05 PM drdoc: silica gel stops adsorbing at 85-90F
05:05 PM drdoc: adsorption rate drops like a rock at 77F
05:05 PM drdoc: and where my printer lives is closer to 100F most of the year
05:07 PM drdoc: I use calcium chloride - it's not as fast as silica but it's effective at much higher temperatures
05:07 PM drdoc: Fun Fact: when I was a kid I worked for a farm-tractor dealer
05:09 PM drdoc: they put water in the tractor tires for weight, and we mixed in calcium chloride for antifreeze
05:09 PM Tom_L: i've heard of that
05:09 PM SpeedEvil: CaCl also can work - there is obviously concern about damp CaCl2
05:10 PM drdoc: you can boil a 55-gallon drum of water damn quick dumping 100lb bags into it
05:10 PM drdoc: SpeedEvil: as long as there's a drip tray, it doesn't seem to raise the humidity at all
05:11 PM drdoc: you can dry it too, but it's cheaper to throw it away
05:11 PM drdoc: 6 hours at 300F = a lot of air conditioning...
05:13 PM drdoc: Tom_L: I finally got my latency down in lcnc 2.8
05:13 PM SpeedEvil: I have not seen any lower absorbtion at 40C of silica gel.
05:14 PM drdoc: the canned Stretch uspace install upgraded to 2.8, and a lot of services turned off
05:15 PM drdoc: SpeedEvil: I live in Austin, Texas, where daytime relative humidity is usually over 50% and often over 70% for weeks at a time
05:15 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L: https://gnipsel.com/equipment/vacuum-forming/
05:16 PM drdoc: the drip in adsorption is documented - I looked it up when my PC started steaming out of the nozzle, fresh out of the drybox
05:16 PM Tom_L: damn you got da clips now!
05:16 PM drdoc: drop*
05:17 PM JT-Shop: wasn't taking any chances lol
05:17 PM Tom_L: i also think you want to stick it on the mold with the vacuum on
05:17 PM Tom_L: don't wait
05:17 PM JT-Shop: yea I'm thinking that as well now
05:18 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/rc/p3p/
05:18 PM Tom_L: and have some cotton gloves nearby in case you need to rub it flat anywhere
05:19 PM drdoc: I use an old pair of kevlar gloves working Kydex
05:19 PM JT-Shop: I'll have gloves on when I get it out of the oven, need some thick cotton ones
05:20 PM Tom_L: so production starts tomorrow!
05:20 PM drdoc: http://minnesotaglove.com/kevlar-heat-resistant/
05:21 PM drdoc: close to like those; I bought them for blacksmithing
05:21 PM drdoc: I can handle red-hot 4140 with them
05:21 PM drdoc: for, like, 3 seconds...
05:22 PM Tom_L: probably don't need any that extreme
05:22 PM drdoc: nah
05:22 PM drdoc: but I like kevlar better than cotton, even for reasonable temps
05:24 PM _unreal_: hello
05:24 PM drdoc: hey
05:28 PM _unreal_: So I need to get grub setup
05:28 PM _unreal_: that computer i'm trying to setup as a dual boot. its acting like it has windows only on it yet i DID do the lcnc install
05:29 PM _unreal_: partitioned the HD's and evreything and installed
05:29 PM _unreal_: not sure why it didnt make a grub install
05:29 PM _unreal_: kevlar?
05:29 PM SpeedEvil: drdoc: Interesting. This is not as I understood it. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/320898890_Revisiting_the_adsorption_equilibrium_equations_of_silica_gelwater_for_adsorption_cooling_applications/link/5aa2c52baca272d448b5a323/download - currently have on queue to read.
05:30 PM _unreal_: OH blasksmith
05:44 PM _unreal_: interesting
05:44 PM _unreal_: ok so I have an optical encoder with 256 CPR
05:44 PM _unreal_: and a 1/4" bore
05:46 PM _unreal_: 256 pulse per rotation isnt bad
05:46 PM _unreal_: finer pitch then any of my steppers :)
05:46 PM _unreal_: err ANGLE
05:50 PM _unreal_: omg I join the chat and everyone shuts up LOL
05:52 PM _unreal_: mesa controllers that can do encoders. if you use an encoder and your step rate is different then your encoder I assume it does not matter. the mesa controller is just programmedw ith how many cpr the encoder is.
05:52 PM _unreal_: ?
05:52 PM _unreal_: yes no?
05:52 PM _unreal_: so if your micro stepping. it knows its ether ON or damn close and can adjust for lost steps ya?
05:54 PM * _unreal_ goes for a shower
06:02 PM drdoc: SpeedEvil: the other difference, probably more relevant to me, is that I can reliably keep the drybox under 20% RH with CaCl2
06:02 PM SpeedEvil: drdoc: I have nearly ordered the bits for a peltier drier, but not yet got around to it.
06:05 PM drdoc: are you familiar with Taulman filaments?
06:06 PM drdoc: http://taulman3d.com/index.html
06:06 PM drdoc: in their R&D labs, they use a Home Depot bucket and a 75W drop-light
06:07 PM drdoc: http://taulman3d.com/drying-materials.html
06:09 PM drdoc: I can attest that at 60% RH, it not only requires desiccant but needs to stay on 24/7 to keep material dry
06:10 PM drdoc: I use one with 2 vent holes at top and 2 at bottom, with about 250g CaCl2
06:11 PM drdoc: it'll dry a kg of nylon trimmer line in about 16 hours
06:11 PM drdoc: 20-24 hours for pure polycarbonate
06:12 PM drdoc: then I have a "Jumbo Cube" MagicBag ziplock in a 48-qt Igloo cooler for storage
06:13 PM drdoc: that all only sounds like overkill if you don't live here.
06:22 PM * _unreal_ feels like he was preaching to the quire
06:23 PM jthornton: lol
06:23 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:24 PM * _unreal_ assume jthornton all but fell out of his chair
06:26 PM drdoc: _unreal_: ?
06:26 PM * jthornton was filling his glass...
06:27 PM drdoc: _unreal_: different computers deal differently with UEFI boot choices
06:27 PM _unreal_: HUM
06:28 PM drdoc: if you choose a one-time boot - usually F12 at boot time - does the LCNC install show in the list
06:28 PM drdoc: ?
06:29 PM drdoc: I have a laptop that triple boots. Windows 10, Linux, and macOS, and Windows 10 is preinstalled as a "legacy" boot
06:29 PM drdoc: Linux and macOS are on a second hard drive.
06:31 PM _unreal_: yes
06:31 PM drdoc: I can choose between the three if I hit the one-time boot list, but otherwise I *cannot* put all three in the default boot choices
06:31 PM _unreal_: onetime boot ahh
06:31 PM _unreal_: not sure I'd have to boot the thing up. I dont think so
06:32 PM _unreal_: LOL my father is over. he just ate the worng pizza. one is HOT the other is normal
06:32 PM _unreal_: hehe
06:32 PM drdoc: heh
06:33 PM drdoc: my partner gave me pepper plants this year - a pequine, which is native here, a tabasco, a Scotch bonnet and a "Carolina Red Hot"
06:34 PM drdoc: that Red Hot didn't produce much, but the peppers will make you cry
06:35 PM jthornton: I pruned some tomato plants today to grow them inside this winter
06:35 PM drdoc: and that Tabasco plant is proof positive that the Tabasco Hot Sauce company has been watering down their product for years
06:37 PM drdoc: jthornton: my peppers are on their second fruit for the year, and looks like they'll ripen before it freezes
06:37 PM drdoc: I told Sara I'm commandeering a whole bed for chiles next year
06:37 PM jthornton: nice, I had a bunch of tomatoes that I picked green before the frost and they are getting ripe
06:37 PM _unreal_: I have some pepper plants from puerto rico
06:38 PM _unreal_: I have never tried growing the seems but I may
06:38 PM drdoc: _unreal_: what kind?
06:38 PM _unreal_: not sure
06:38 PM _unreal_: FUCKING HOT as I recall
06:38 PM drdoc: lol
06:38 PM _unreal_: little small red one's
06:38 PM jthornton: I didn't see any watering down at Avery Island...
06:38 PM _unreal_: like 3/4" maybe 1" long I was a kid the last time I went to PR
06:38 PM drdoc: pretty-much anything Carribean are waaay warm
06:39 PM * _unreal_ is all but in the carribean
06:39 PM _unreal_: :)
06:39 PM drdoc: yeah
06:39 PM jthornton: 90 miles from Cuba...
06:39 PM _unreal_: lol thats key west
06:39 PM drdoc: these schotch bonnets aren't as hot as I expected
06:39 PM jthornton: must be fake lol
06:39 PM _unreal_: I'm very close to the bahamas
06:40 PM drdoc: no, they're only mild in comparison to the others
06:40 PM drdoc: any of them would make a jalapeno hide in the corner
06:40 PM jthornton: does it make a difference if other peppers are near by and pollinating
06:41 PM * _unreal_ loves stuffed jalapanos
06:41 PM drdoc: jthornton: I think so, but these are all singles and all but the Red Hot fruited pretty well
06:41 PM _unreal_: I may have to try and grow them. as I recall the peppers grew like a bush?
06:41 PM drdoc: _unreal_: yes
06:42 PM _unreal_: I do remember making a chilly whith the one's I have and ONE was more then enough for an entire pot
06:42 PM jthornton: I have a Japanese Pepper plant with some mild but flavorful peppers
06:42 PM roycroft: jalapenos are pretty mild peppers
06:42 PM roycroft: i don't see why folks get all excited about them
06:42 PM drdoc: that's one of the big reasons I want a whole bed next year - for the pollination
06:42 PM roycroft: they have nice flavor, but they're not really very hot at all
06:42 PM _unreal_: I just opened a jar last night when i was makin gthe pizza
06:42 PM _unreal_: :0
06:42 PM _unreal_: :)
06:42 PM drdoc: roycroft: I concur
06:43 PM drdoc: and I really don't care for habaneros
06:43 PM _unreal_: banana peppers
06:43 PM _unreal_: mmmm
06:43 PM drdoc: hot, yes, but they mask whatever else you're eating
06:43 PM _unreal_: this rotten shit is GREAT
06:43 PM roycroft: habaneros are ok
06:44 PM roycroft: they do have a fair amount of heat
06:44 PM drdoc: roycroft: I like serranos better
06:44 PM roycroft: but not enough flavor to go with the heat
06:44 PM roycroft: yes, serranos are good
06:44 PM roycroft: i do like them
06:44 PM _unreal_: jalapanaro
06:44 PM drdoc: good heat, good flavor, and I can still taste the onions
06:44 PM drdoc: :-)
06:44 PM _unreal_: i take my daughter to "limes" all the time
06:45 PM drdoc: but these Carolina Red Hots taste almost like citrus, flaming hot, and no masking
06:45 PM drdoc: If I get a better crop next year it's going to be mango-based pico de gallo
06:46 PM _unreal_: https://limefreshmexicangrill.com/
06:46 PM * jthornton watches pixhawk videos downloaded this morning\
06:46 PM jthornton: drdoc, that sounds really good
06:46 PM _unreal_: jthornton, I take it your into the pixhawk direction now
06:46 PM drdoc: they're pretty yummy
06:46 PM roycroft: we don't get many good pepper varieties here, sadly
06:46 PM jthornton: it looks pretty good so far
06:46 PM drdoc: ever had chile pequines?
06:47 PM roycroft: i even go to the mexican markets, and all they have are the usual fresh peppers
06:47 PM jthornton: to bad most of the videos are for the older version
06:47 PM roycroft: there's a little better variety of dried peppers in the mexican markets compared to the mainstream supermarkets
06:47 PM roycroft: but for fresh peppers, nothing unusual or different
06:48 PM roycroft: there's an asian market that occasionally gets some hot asian peppers
06:48 PM roycroft: i should probably grow my own if i want tasty ones
06:48 PM drdoc: I was gonna say, asian or Indian markets tend to have better variety
06:48 PM drdoc: where are you?
06:49 PM roycroft: eugene oregon
06:50 PM _unreal_: south florida :)
06:50 PM _unreal_: and yes its about 80f outside right now
06:50 PM Jymmm: Does anyone have/use a battery charge with a desulfating mode that would recommend?
06:51 PM roycroft: that's one reason i'm not in south florida :)
06:51 PM _unreal_: Jymmm, for what kind of battery?
06:51 PM roycroft: the climate here is fine for growing peppers
06:51 PM roycroft: one just has to start them in a greenhouse
06:51 PM Jymmm: _unreal_: car/marine
06:51 PM roycroft: but they can be put out in mid to late may, and will easily grow to maturity and yield well
06:52 PM _unreal_: Jymmm, typically they are not chargers but a battery saver for breaking up the crystals
06:52 PM _unreal_: with high voltage pulsed
06:52 PM drdoc: roycroft: if you're not looking for huge scovilles, these pequin peppers are a really compact plant
06:52 PM Jymmm: _unreal_: to you have/use one you would suggest?
06:52 PM drdoc: so is the Tabasco
06:52 PM _unreal_: I'v never used one but I have researched in the past
06:53 PM roycroft: and i'm not
06:53 PM roycroft: i like some heat
06:53 PM roycroft: but i mostly want the flavor
06:53 PM Jymmm: roycroft: frsh or dried?
06:53 PM jthornton: aye, the flavor is the best part
06:53 PM roycroft: i want enough heat to complement the flavor, not overwhelm it
06:54 PM _unreal_: like most habanaro sauces
06:54 PM _unreal_: hehe
06:54 PM drdoc: I like the pequines and the Red Hots best, then it's a tie between the Tabascos and the scotch bonnets
06:54 PM _unreal_: :( ].... hot....
06:55 PM drdoc: (not to be confused with the Carolina Reaper. homey don't need that shit.)
06:56 PM flyback: any of you attempt a continious ballscrew wash to try to prevent abrasive from being ground in?
06:57 PM XXCoder: some people add paint brush so it brushes off anything before it enters nut
06:57 PM XXCoder: im sure theres aletrnatives too
06:57 PM SpeedEvil: Don't surface grinders use pumped filtered oil ways?
06:57 PM flyback: XXCoder, no that's a good idea
06:57 PM roycroft: a brass wire brush would be better, no?
06:58 PM XXCoder: roy honestly no idea? wouldnt that be unable to get dust opff
06:58 PM XXCoder: ?
06:58 PM roycroft: brass wires can be as fine as paintbrush bristles
06:58 PM XXCoder: interesting. i guess it would last longer too
06:58 PM roycroft: yes
06:59 PM _unreal_: part of why I'm partial to threaded rod
06:59 PM roycroft: oh for christ's sake
07:00 PM drdoc: ruh roh
07:00 PM _unreal_: ?
07:00 PM roycroft: i'm missing a $2.50 knob (that's really worth about 35 cents) on my stand mixer
07:00 PM roycroft: i just got ahold of kitchenaid
07:00 PM roycroft: they refuse to sell me the knob
07:00 PM _unreal_: theaving bastards
07:00 PM roycroft: they want me to send them the mixer, at my expense, pay them $100 to "repair" it, and they will send it back, again at my expense, with a new knob
07:01 PM _unreal_: repair=replace
07:01 PM jthornton: print one
07:01 PM XXCoder: jeez thats one of aspects "right to repair" is for
07:01 PM drdoc: roycroft: Ebay....
07:01 PM XXCoder: it makes companies provide parts for reasonable price
07:01 PM roycroft: if i were in europe that would be illegal
07:01 PM XXCoder: ebay is illegal?
07:01 PM roycroft: but i'm in america, land of legalized thievery
07:01 PM roycroft: i'll find it on an online appliance parts store, i'm sure
07:01 PM jthornton: to bad that part is not made here I could get a hand full\
07:02 PM drdoc: which knob?
07:02 PM roycroft: it's a tilting head mixer
07:02 PM drdoc: I have an old Kitchenaid 150
07:02 PM roycroft: the tilt lever lock knob is what is missing
07:02 PM drdoc: is the lever there?
07:02 PM roycroft: it's the same fucking knob that they've put two of on every single model for the last 50 years
07:02 PM roycroft: yes
07:02 PM roycroft: and i just found it for $2.85
07:02 PM drdoc: screw ebay
07:03 PM drdoc: glob some JB weld on it
07:03 PM drdoc: ;-D
07:03 PM roycroft: they want $7.95 shipping though
07:03 PM roycroft: so i'm ordering two knobs, and a set of motor brushes
07:03 PM _unreal_: make a jbweld glob and mill a nob out of it
07:03 PM drdoc: lol
07:03 PM roycroft: the motor is fine, but the mixer is 20 years old
07:03 PM drdoc: roycroft: URL please
07:03 PM roycroft: it won't hurt to have a spare set of brushes
07:03 PM roycroft: and yes, it's still $7.95 shipping
07:03 PM _unreal_: or knobs
07:03 PM drdoc: mine's about that old too
07:04 PM _unreal_: roycroft, sounds like you need a knob job
07:04 PM roycroft: https://www.partselect.com/AdvancedModelSearch.aspx?ModelNum=KSM90WH&mfgModelNum=&fkMfgID=3
07:04 PM _unreal_: or rather have a knob job ahead of you
07:04 PM drdoc: _unreal_: 10 yard penalty
07:04 PM drdoc: roughing the pun!
07:04 PM drdoc: roycroft: bookmarked, thanks!
07:04 PM * _unreal_ goes for beer
07:05 PM roycroft: holy moly
07:05 PM drdoc: $8 really isn't bad for shipping
07:05 PM roycroft: i *just* bought two lever assemblies
07:05 PM roycroft: for $2.95 each
07:05 PM roycroft: as in two minutes ago
07:05 PM roycroft: now they are $5.54 each
07:05 PM roycroft: no, that's not bad for shipping
07:05 PM drdoc: you must have nabbed half their stock
07:05 PM roycroft: but if i'm going to pay more for shipping than i pay for the part, i'm going to add more parts to the order
07:05 PM roycroft: which is what i did
07:06 PM roycroft: or the last of the older stock
07:06 PM drdoc: I do enough Ebay selling to appreciate the "handling" part of S&H
07:06 PM roycroft: they may be one of those outfits who charge a standard margin based on actual cost
07:06 PM drdoc: yeah
07:06 PM roycroft: and don't jack the prices up on existing stock when new stock costs more
07:07 PM drdoc: I've bought stove parts from them, and I think a dryer filter
07:07 PM drdoc: they don't suck at all
07:07 PM roycroft: be a real ebayer
07:07 PM roycroft: and offer free shipping
07:07 PM drdoc: mostly I do
07:08 PM drdoc: it depends a lot on size & weight
07:08 PM roycroft: by having your stuff come from china, using slave children for your "handlers" and government subsidised postage to the us
07:08 PM drdoc: yeah...
07:08 PM drdoc: no.
07:08 PM roycroft: this knob has been missing for years
07:08 PM _unreal_: had me a chines girlfreind once. DAMN she was hot
07:08 PM drdoc: what I really need is a pair of the smaller bowls
07:09 PM roycroft: but i just painted my kitchen, and did some work on the cabinet were i store the stand mixer
07:09 PM roycroft: i was about to put everything back where it lives, and decided that before i put the mixer away i should deal with the knob
07:09 PM roycroft: it's been bugging me for years :)
07:09 PM _unreal_: drdoc, see it is a knob job
07:10 PM _unreal_: !!!!! $#%@#$^@#$%#$@^ there it is
07:10 PM _unreal_: just found my JST connector box
07:10 PM roycroft: did the chinse government ship her to you for free, _unreal_?
07:10 PM roycroft: and did she hold air once you got her?
07:10 PM _unreal_: roycroft, she was a next door neighbor shhhh and one of my best friends little sister
07:11 PM drdoc: roycroft: I'm familiar with that process
07:12 PM drdoc: I replaced a disk in my main workstation a couple of months ago
07:12 PM drdoc: while it was open I drew and printed a mount plate for the fan that's been wired to the heatsink for... 4 years?
07:12 PM * _unreal_ i'm thinking I need a mail order bride
07:13 PM drdoc: everybody needs a mail-order bride
07:13 PM drdoc: what's not to love about a human-trafficking conviction?
07:13 PM _unreal_: :)
07:14 PM drdoc: ok, I can live with this
07:14 PM drdoc: 19-hour run, 6 glxgears and a looped dd job going
07:14 PM _unreal_: ?
07:15 PM _unreal_: 2min and I'm going for DIN with the kid
07:15 PM drdoc: 8uSec servo & 9.5uSec base
07:15 PM _unreal_: drdoc, i'm torn
07:15 PM drdoc: I think I can run a router with that
07:15 PM drdoc: _unreal_: ?
07:15 PM _unreal_: I'd like to go with PAR ports
07:16 PM _unreal_: on this setup BUT I also dont want to deal with random machine issues if I boot win to do cad work
07:16 PM _unreal_: on the same machine
07:16 PM _unreal_: so I'm looking at using mesa cards
07:16 PM _unreal_: likely an ethernet one if anything
07:17 PM _unreal_: BUT
07:17 PM drdoc: any PCIe LPT card that lcnc supports will have Windows drivers
07:17 PM _unreal_: what I'm getting at is that I would prefer to og lcnc
07:17 PM _unreal_: but there is random par activity in windows mainly during boot
07:17 PM _unreal_: dont need the machine doing bs
07:17 PM _unreal_: well I'll be back in a bit need to go have din with the kid
07:18 PM drdoc: you can tell windows to ignore any device you want
07:18 PM _unreal_: hum
07:18 PM _unreal_: could also just turn the power off
07:18 PM _unreal_: :/
07:18 PM drdoc: Device Manager > Properties > Disable
07:18 PM _unreal_: so i have 256 ppr encoders on hand
07:19 PM _unreal_: drdoc, does nothing during boot though
07:19 PM drdoc: so why worry about it?
07:19 PM _unreal_: that setting does nothing during boot I mean
07:19 PM drdoc: if the machine's not on, the activity won't matter
07:19 PM _unreal_: you can still get random signals on parport
07:19 PM _unreal_: during boot
07:20 PM _unreal_: true
07:20 PM drdoc: OK
07:20 PM _unreal_: I'm toying with using these encoders
07:20 PM drdoc: go play with the kid, man
07:20 PM drdoc: that's important
07:20 PM _unreal_: she's getting the TV started right now
07:21 PM _unreal_: amazon
07:21 PM drdoc: cool
07:21 PM _unreal_: ! ding ding... ok back in a bit
07:22 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight: I just made a change to the way that KERNEL_VERS is determined. It isn’t the suggested way, though.
07:22 PM _unreal_: we are "gag me " watching some amazon show with "jhon boy from the waltons" as "father" doing a swiss family robinson
07:23 PM Tom_L: _unreal_ and you're gonna love every second of it
07:23 PM Tom_L: right?
07:27 PM _unreal_: NOT
07:27 PM _unreal_: OMG 99% of the swiss family robinson cast are dead
07:27 PM _unreal_: original movie
07:27 PM _unreal_: ok bbiab
07:34 PM SpeedEvil: https://i.imgur.com/TQMrS4V.jpg
07:35 PM pink_vampire: SpeedEvil: LOL
07:35 PM * XXCoder groans
07:35 PM Jymmm: <rimshot>
07:35 PM XXCoder: thats weapon grade pun
07:55 PM Jymmm: Loetmichel: Do you have a battery charge with a desulfate mode on it?
07:55 PM XXCoder: deflate mode ;)
08:19 PM _unreal_: SpeedEvil, I dont get it
08:20 PM _unreal_: I already told jymm 99% of the chargers out ther do not support desulfate
08:20 PM _unreal_: that a special battery saver device
09:14 PM genoober: hi everybody
09:15 PM genoober: https://pastebin.com/1dLxh2Hy so ive still got that homing issue. ive read the wiki page and i think i have it right... anybody want to eyeball my config to see what i missed?
09:16 PM genoober: cant move x because im on the limit switch
09:29 PM genoober: beer for the win.... i had home in twice
09:29 PM Elmo40: genoober, not to help with the homing but why is your PID 0 for I and D?
09:30 PM genoober: no clue what they are for
09:30 PM genoober: more manuals for me
09:31 PM Elmo40: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/motion/pid-theory.html
09:31 PM genoober: thats what pncconf defaulted to i assume
09:36 PM genoober: ok just read the wiki page and im more clueless
09:39 PM genoober: whats worse my real dro reads a 0.0115 in difference
09:51 PM genoober: for the layman who only passed highschool geometry?
09:57 PM genoober: does pid make a difference with stepper motors? or just servo motors?
09:58 PM jesseg: Just servo motors :D :D :D
10:00 PM jesseg: Now, if you add a position encoder to a stepper and use it with the correct kind of driver, then it can be run as a brushless DC motor and then PID can help a whole lot... But then again, it's not running as a stepper.. so my answer still stands :D
10:01 PM jesseg: By definition, PID requires a position feedback mechanism, and by definition strictly speaking, a stepper does not have that.
10:01 PM jesseg: because if it did, it would be a brushless DC motor :D
10:03 PM genoober: well when the machine is cutting metal i plan on a new stepper mount cuz its currently a kludge... plan on using a quadrature encoder on each axis. 200 pulses per rev and a belted 1:10 reduction.
10:04 PM genoober: i suppose i shall come top that bridge later though i just wanna get this thing working i have a bunch of aluminum widgets to cut for Christmas
10:06 PM genoober: i dont suppose anybody has a test-cube.nc file like is common on 3d printers
10:16 PM genoober: success woot woot yeet all axis's home correctly
10:28 PM Tom_L: nice
10:35 PM genoober: sooooo silly question... amazon.com lied.... i bought a whb04b-4 and the seller claimed it worked with linuxcnc anybody wanna help a moron set it up? or anyone know of a plug and play pendant?
10:37 PM Tom_L: wireless?
10:37 PM genoober: wired
10:38 PM genoober: but its odd the display on the pendant just says lost rf
10:39 PM genoober: plugh it in on a windows box and it works fine.... minus being connected to a milling machine
10:39 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/man/man9/xhc_hb04_util.9.html
10:42 PM genoober: what is the usage of that? im no linux wiz terminal reports command not found
10:43 PM Tom_L: it's a user component you loadrt with
10:43 PM Tom_L: then addf servo thread
10:43 PM genoober: im also on 2.7.14 version of linuxcnc
10:44 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/man/man9/xhc_hb04_util.9.html
10:44 PM Tom_L: feel better now?
10:45 PM genoober: just though more info might be helpful but yes
10:45 PM Tom_L: not that i know of
10:45 PM genoober: and still cornfused lol
10:45 PM Tom_L: check the forum
10:46 PM Tom_L: no experience with it personally
10:50 PM genoober: i have been one reason im here its all greek to me
10:52 PM genoober: my brother said all the real wizards hang out on irc
10:54 PM genoober: ya got a pendant that works and was an easy setup? lol at this point i might as well just throw money at it im tired of hitting my head on the wall
10:56 PM _unreal_: I have not read back at all but I'm going to assume right off the back your ether missing the HAL driver for your pendent or its just not setup
10:56 PM _unreal_: I have the same one only the 6 axis
10:56 PM _unreal_: not setup currently
10:57 PM _unreal_: infact I'm figing to get linux booting on my UEFI based sysm :/
11:10 PM drdoc: _unreal_: what brand is it? the PC?
11:12 PM _unreal_: ahh
11:12 PM _unreal_: hp
11:13 PM _unreal_: envy23
11:13 PM drdoc: how much setup have you done on the LCNC install?
11:15 PM drdoc: actually, back up one step - have you gone into the BIOS and checked the UEFI settings?
11:16 PM drdoc: On some Dells, a new EFI boot option doesn't automatically get on the system's boot list
11:30 PM genoober: managed to build linuxcnc 2.9.0pre0 lol where is the binary
