01:29 AM Deejay: moin
04:50 AM jthornton: morning
04:51 AM XXCoder: morning
06:23 AM XXCoder: jt they finally did it. shop is 99% led lit now
06:23 AM XXCoder: 1% is 2 lights above a61 cell. guy said they will replace em once they have special much longer walkway to reach it.
06:52 AM Tom_L: norning
07:48 AM _unreal_: yawn
07:48 AM _unreal_: think I'm going to go make coffee
08:44 AM skunkworks: dad replace the lights in the shop with led.. It is bright.. Don't look directly into the fixtures..
09:59 AM cradek: I still have never bought a LED bulb because I can't know ahead of time which of them flicker at 60 or 120Hz, which really bug me
09:59 AM cradek: I bet most are fine. But I still buy CFs. They are getting harder to find.
10:00 AM cradek: I bought HUGE ones for my watch shop (85W each iirc)
10:03 AM skunkworks: you definatly need to check them out. The ones dad bought in bulk are great. He bought a few locally from the hardware store and they flicker real bad
10:04 AM cradek: maybe I will if my big CFs die (they make a shocking noise when first turned on)
10:05 AM cradek: the spiral on them is about the size of a 2 liter pop bottle
10:31 AM Tom_L: cradek just don't buy the cheap ones
10:32 AM Tom_L: i got a box from costco and every single one went bad within a month
10:33 AM Tom_L: i've been slowly replacing the ones in my garage/shop with 4' strips
10:33 AM Tom_L: so far those work great and are alot brighter
10:33 AM Tom_L: i went thru the CF phase too and most of those went bad
11:09 AM _unreal_: cradek, LED's typically have a much higher HZ then 120
11:09 AM _unreal_: 1000's+
11:17 AM roycroft: an led is 0Hz
11:17 AM roycroft: it's a dc device
11:18 AM roycroft: a compact fluorescent bulb, however, is a medium frequency ac device
11:20 AM SpeedEvil: They work 'fine' on DC.
11:21 AM SpeedEvil: For a few hundred hours anyway
11:21 AM pcw_home: DC typically pumps the mercury all to one end
11:22 AM SpeedEvil: Cheaper LED lamps are often simple capacitive droppers, meaning they flash significantly at 120/100Hz
11:23 AM pcw_home: on ancient DC fluorescent fixtures they used a on-off-on-off switch that reversed the polarity every time you cycled the power
11:23 AM SpeedEvil: I've only seen it in lanterns.
11:23 AM SpeedEvil: Where in 99.9% of cases, >>>3 hour bulb life was a miracle.
11:24 AM SpeedEvil: (compared with incan torch bulbs)
11:25 AM pcw_home: They were common on old 600VDC street cars
11:34 AM roycroft: i'm not sure why cfl bulbs are even for sale any more
11:34 AM roycroft: they were an ok transition technology, while leds were being perfected
11:35 AM roycroft: but now we have cheap, reliable led bulbs that outperform cfls and provide much better quality light than cfls
11:37 AM Tom_L: just a little hard to determine which ones are higher quality
11:37 AM pcw_home: I don't see CFLs for sale much any more (at least here)
11:37 AM Tom_L: i've gotten GE, Sylvania etc ones that haven't lasted as well as the cheap ones
11:37 AM Tom_L: hardly any here
11:38 AM roycroft: it could be that stores are just selling out existing stock, and it's taking a very long time to sell them
11:38 AM roycroft: most of the stores around here still have them, but there are far more leds for sale
11:39 AM Tom_L: they didn't plan that very well then
11:40 AM roycroft: my boss decided years ago that he wasn't going to let the government tell him what kind of lamps to use (it didn't), and bought several pallets of incandescent lamps before the government made it illegal to sell them (it's not illegal to sell them)
11:40 AM roycroft: so his basement is half filled with inefficient lamps
11:40 AM Tom_L: maybe he's happy though
11:40 AM roycroft: no, he likes to complain about the government constantly
11:40 AM Tom_L: hmm
11:40 AM roycroft: he is one of the most miserable people i've ever known
11:41 AM Tom_L: seems to be a thing sometimes
11:41 AM roycroft: the funny thing is, a significant amount of his company's revenue comes from a government contract
11:41 AM roycroft: so it's ok to take money from the government
11:41 AM roycroft: but it's not ok for the government to collect taxes or otherwise exist
11:41 AM roycroft: the giving away money part is the only thing it's good for
11:42 AM roycroft: as long as it's being given away to the right people, of course
11:42 AM roycroft: he also bought pallets of ammo (literally - when it was delivered the floor sagged in our office)
11:42 AM roycroft: when obama was elected
11:42 AM roycroft: because obama was going to take away all his guns and ammo
11:42 AM roycroft: he put that all in his basement as well
11:42 AM roycroft: and then someone broke into his house and stole all the ammo
11:43 AM roycroft: probably because he was bragging that he bought enough ammo that he would be able to survive anything
11:43 AM Tom_L: didn't fortify his fortress very well
11:44 AM roycroft: whatever your position on guns and ammo and government, it seems to me to be common sense that if you're going to stockpile ammunition like that it's probably best to keep a low profile about it
11:45 AM roycroft: anyway, he's still paying high electric bills and changing bulbs on a regular basis
11:45 AM roycroft: i'm paying less and i can't remember the last time i had to change a light bulb
11:46 AM roycroft: modern leds are also really really nice for machinery lamps
11:46 AM roycroft: even the heavy duty incandescents would not last very long when used on something that vibrates
11:46 AM roycroft: i.e. the "rough service" bulbs
11:47 AM Tom_L: i like the leds
11:47 AM roycroft: now that we have them with decent color temperatures, and good diffusers, i'm really happy with them
11:48 AM roycroft: and i don't care if i have to spend $8 for a good quality led bulb
11:48 AM roycroft: vs. $2.50 for an equivalent incandescent
11:48 AM Tom_L: i just don't like spending $8 and have it not last
11:48 AM roycroft: i'll make up the cost difference very quickly in energy savings
11:49 AM roycroft: not to mention they last so much longer i'd probably buy a dozen or more incandescents before replacing the one led
11:49 AM roycroft: i've had really good luck with philips led bulbs
11:50 AM roycroft: in fact, i have one in my desk lamp in my office that is really neat
11:50 AM roycroft: it has two output levels
11:50 AM roycroft: actually, three different outputs
11:50 AM roycroft: warm low, warm high, cool high
11:51 AM roycroft: but unlike the "three way" incandescents, it has memory
11:51 AM roycroft: so you can change output by turing the switch rapidly
11:51 AM roycroft: but when you stop on what you like if you wait a second, it memorises that setting
11:51 AM roycroft: and then when you turn it back on it always uses that setting, unless you reset it
11:51 AM roycroft: it is a philips bulb
11:52 AM roycroft: and the cool color temperature is more like 6k - closer to daylight than those blue "cool" flourescents
11:54 AM Tom_L: i've tried philips as well
11:55 AM Tom_L: eventually they all start blinking
11:55 AM Tom_L: i've got a few dimmable ones that so far have lasted better
12:08 PM roycroft: it looks like florida will be spared the brunt of dorian
12:08 PM roycroft: it's turning north
12:09 PM Tom_L: yeah acording to my inlaw it's gonna hit Ga
12:09 PM Tom_L: i haven't even looked at the map
12:10 PM roycroft: the current model shows it staying just offshore until thursday, when it may make landfall in north carolina as a category 2
12:10 PM roycroft: but it will be close enough that there will be severe storm surges and heavy, heavy rain all along the coast
12:11 PM roycroft: it keeps slowing down
12:11 PM roycroft: and the slower it moves, the more damage it will cause
12:12 PM roycroft: it's moving at 6 knots right now
12:12 PM roycroft: it was moving at 9 knots last night
12:13 PM roycroft: and my pager just went off :(
12:13 PM * roycroft would like to have a holiday weekend some time where he doesn't have to work
01:09 PM bjorkintosh: roycroft, are you an emt or medical professional?
01:55 PM roycroft: i am neither
01:55 PM roycroft: but i am on-call
01:55 PM roycroft: i operate an isp
01:56 PM roycroft: and i have a server down at a data center in downtown eugene, where saturday market is taking place
01:56 PM roycroft: i had to park at a parkade three blocks away, and i ended up having to pull the server to bring back to my office to diagnos/repair
01:57 PM roycroft: not fun
02:15 PM jdh: current track is here (ilm) thursday morning.
02:19 PM bjorkintosh: yikes.
02:23 PM jdh: and, I sold my boat yesterday. I'm having a pretty spectacular day for an upcoming storm.
02:27 PM bjorkintosh: somewhere across town "dammit, I just bought a damned boat yesterday. and there's an upcoming storm!"
02:27 PM roycroft: get that boat out to sea, where it will be safe
02:28 PM bjorkintosh: while reciting quotes from the perfect storm, no?
02:28 PM roycroft: recite what you will
02:28 PM roycroft: that's not going to affect the safety of the boat
02:28 PM bjorkintosh: whoa! the storm has feelings!
02:34 PM roycroft: failed disk
02:34 PM roycroft: this has turned from an annoyance to a chore
02:34 PM * roycroft tries to remember a labor day weekend where he did not have to work
02:35 PM jdh: no hot swap raid?
02:35 PM roycroft: sadly no, not this machine
02:35 PM roycroft: it's one of the older ones, and it's not one that we own - it's one that we manage for the customer
02:36 PM roycroft: who has spent at least 10x more on my time for repairs (i charge double time on holidays/weekends) than it would have cost to replace the machine
02:36 PM roycroft: but it's a government entity who own the machine, and they have repair budget for it but not replacement budget for it
02:36 PM roycroft: and they can't move repair money to a replacement account without it being a major ordeal
02:36 PM roycroft: i guess i'm off to best buy, in hopes that i can find something that will work
02:38 PM roycroft: if not, i might have to drive up to fry's, which is a 2 hour drive each way
02:38 PM roycroft: and maybe more like 3 hours, since it's a holiday weekend and fry's are just outside portland
02:40 PM jdh: get a govt courier
02:41 PM jdh: call uber eats, order a burger and hard drive
02:46 PM bjorkintosh: hahaha
02:46 PM bjorkintosh: there's such a thing as a gov't courier?
02:50 PM SpeedEvil: bjorkintosh: an army
02:52 PM ziper: jdh, what kind of boat
02:53 PM jdh: 25ft SeaCat
02:54 PM jdh: https://imgur.com/a/6p60mJd
03:13 PM ziper: ive got 4
03:13 PM ziper: 2 are for sale. maybe 3, after seeing how fucked up the last one has gotten
04:01 PM Deejay: gn8
04:02 PM Tom_L: gn9
04:13 PM bjorkintosh: gn7
05:15 PM roycroft: yay
05:15 PM roycroft: i has disk
05:15 PM roycroft: and am restoring from backup
05:15 PM roycroft: now, while i'm waiting for that to finish, i can set up an aircraft countersink and countersink 173 little holes that i drilled yesterday
05:16 PM * roycroft leads such an exciting life
05:19 PM XXCoder: :) in shop its better to have boring work shift than exciting life.
05:35 PM roycroft: boring is definitely boring
05:38 PM XXCoder: just read about columbu
05:39 PM XXCoder: he apparently drowned by swimming in ocean and geting heart attack
06:43 PM roycroft: *sigh* another mass-shooting in texas
06:45 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:45 PM roycroft: and a mass-shooting in alabama last night
06:46 PM * roycroft heads back to the shop with an ipod so he doesn't accidently hear any news on the radio
08:33 PM jt-mobile: yo
08:33 PM Tom_L: what's up?
08:34 PM jt-mobile: in Hickory NC looking at the weather at Nags Head NC
08:34 PM Tom_L: not so good i hear
08:35 PM jdh: could have a good few days
08:36 PM jdh: Probably fine until Wed, but they will run everyone out after that
08:40 PM jt-mobile: that's what I'm thinking of staying till Tuesday then going somewhere else
