02:08 AM Deejay: moin
04:53 AM Tom_L: morning
04:56 AM jthornton: morning
05:02 AM Tom_L: storm blew thru a while ago
05:05 AM jthornton: supposed to be sunny here
05:14 AM XXCoder: 79 prediction now
05:14 AM XXCoder: was 85
05:14 AM XXCoder: strange how sudden that changed
05:17 AM jthornton: ankle has been hurting so I taped it up with a sticky ace bandage... was feeling better then doctor recommended an ankle brace and now it hurts worse dammit
05:18 AM XXCoder: ow
05:18 AM XXCoder: rest more
05:18 AM XXCoder: and use actual bracr
05:18 AM jthornton: the brace made it hurt worse, wore it all day yesterday
05:20 AM XXCoder: yeah thats why I inclded rest. brace is to help you not move ankle while you rest up
05:20 AM XXCoder: ankle is one of worse joints
06:07 AM jthornton: put the ace bandage back on and it feels better now
06:11 AM XXCoder: nice
06:11 AM _unreal_: ahh linux my old friend
06:11 AM _unreal_: was going to pay my daughters lunch money and discovered windows forced my computer to reboot aagain
06:12 AM sensille: win 10? it's plain broken
06:12 AM XXCoder: linux: "Ok let me play a game" *starts game*
06:12 AM XXCoder: windows: "let me play a game" *starts update process that lasts 5 hours*
06:18 AM _unreal_: heh
06:18 AM _unreal_: saddly I'm going to have to get my desktop computer going. I keep putting it off but now that I've rebooted into linux maybe I'll bother
06:19 AM _unreal_: besides that computer has a high power nvidia card
06:19 AM _unreal_: that way all the cad software will stop complaining
06:19 AM _unreal_: off to work
07:34 AM jthornton: bunch of php updates on the forum this morning
09:10 AM PL7icnc: hi what a day here first workday in school and noone got a mashine going all day phone
09:19 AM jthornton: I thought your class was not funded this year???
09:21 AM PL7icnc: it isent
09:21 AM PL7icnc: therfor all are calling in
09:21 AM PL7icnc: to get the passworts from the mashine
09:22 AM PL7icnc: justanotheruser, = tom ? bist du das
09:23 AM PL7icnc: justanotheruser, sorry if not im waiting for someone
09:24 AM PL7icnc: jthornton, do you think we can screw the hgh rails direct on hardwood
09:25 AM PL7icnc: with 5mmx80mm screw
09:25 AM PL7icnc: better to get steel beneed
09:25 AM PL7icnc: under
09:34 AM pcw_home: jthornton: I say a few minor man page errors (they probably exist also in --help_)
09:34 AM pcw_home: s/say/saw/
09:35 AM pcw_home: I should probably fix them myself and learn how to push some changes (now if I can remember my password sigh...)
10:14 AM gloops: screwing rails onto hardwood isnt a great idea really, bolting is better
10:15 AM Loetmichel: *hmpf* i DO not learn... usually i sit after hours waiting that my CNC mill is done with its job (that i was to optimistic how long it will take)... now that we print more parts i sit and wait for the two 3dprinters... but not for long... will drive home soon, the printers have a webinterface... so i can watch from home when the company goes up in flames ;)
10:54 AM Tom_L: Loetmichel great idea
10:54 AM Tom_L: at least the alarm is fixed
10:56 AM Loetmichel: nice... just came home... 5 layers to go on both printers... *watching the webcams*
10:56 AM Tom_L: you can count them?
10:57 AM Tom_L: do the heating elements shut off when they're done or do they sit there and ooze plastic all night?
10:58 AM Loetmichel: Tom_L: the webinterface tells me
10:58 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17424&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- like this (older print)
10:59 AM Loetmichel: they shut off
10:59 AM Loetmichel: also heatbed shuts off
10:59 AM Loetmichel: and soon i will get the sonoffs to shut off the whole printer remotely
11:23 AM gloops: going to try something ive been meaning to do for a while, made some example simple signs, going to stick them on ebay tommorrow see what happens
11:35 AM jym: Good morning folks
01:12 PM fragalot: syyl: have you ever had any issues with the FP42NC's at work where whilst the spindle is running unloaded in the air, it suddenly makes a belt-slip noise, followed by gears grinding and the sound of you hitting the EMG stop button at the speed of light?
01:13 PM fragalot: miss0r|office: same question above ^
01:36 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZcg3HJN9eg according to this video it has no spindle so it can't be tool chatter :)
01:43 PM CaptHindsight: milling with a lathe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIU5tcuduCM
01:46 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: i'm suspecting either a gear has worked loose in the gearbox, or the brake has failed & somehow sounds like gears grinding
01:47 PM CaptHindsight: i had to look at the sales flyer to see where the spindle is
01:48 PM fragalot: there are 2 :-)
01:48 PM fragalot: one horizontal, and one flip-head vertical
01:48 PM fragalot: (with quill on the one we have)
02:44 PM andypugh: Is archivist ever spotted now? His web site seems to have disappeared
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: not that I'm aware
02:49 PM Gaston|DSP: Hi guys, long time lurker here. I have a question that might be superficial or even stupid :/ A friend is pulling the trigger on Mesa boards and I haven't done my homework but still want to tag along and order with him....
02:49 PM Gaston|DSP: I am retrofiting a Emco VMC-100, so we are going with a 7I76E but I'd like to be able to expand IOs for a control panel later
02:50 PM Gaston|DSP: What card is the most generic for simple I/Os plus puls-generator input
02:50 PM Gaston|DSP: 7I75 ?
02:54 PM skunkworks: look at the 7i73
02:58 PM skunkworks: I have used it for 4 jog wheels + panel I/O
03:00 PM Gaston|DSP: Thanks, I'll have a look at it
03:01 PM skunkworks: you would use your smart serial port on the 7i76e..
03:02 PM JT-Shop: https://mesaus.com/product-category/smart-serial-cards/
03:03 PM JT-Shop: ^ smart serial cards
03:04 PM Gaston|DSP: I have a feeling this migh t turn into a rabbit hole, so I'd rather take a chance on a card by advice than guessing myself
03:31 PM gloops: andypugh archivist is long gone, i mananged to contact his old employer to check if he was alright - old employer phoned back a few days later and assured me archivist was fine and would happy to talk on the phone if anyone wanted, but had become too busy to be on irc
03:31 PM gloops: i dont have the phone numbers anymore, it was a clock company in derby
03:32 PM andypugh: Glad to hear hs is OK, that was my first worry. And being busy might be a good sign.
03:33 PM gloops: he did seem to be gearing up for something during the last few weeks he was here, no idea what, he was something to do with a window company i think
03:33 PM andypugh: I find myself with a lot of time to kill this week. I am working in Germany, the shift starts at 0630 and ends at 1430, then I have the whole afternoon and evening in a hotel room by myself. So lots of time, but no access to my machines or PCs.
03:36 PM andypugh: I did bring the Pi4, when I was workingin the Spain there was a TV with HDMI and USB that I could plug the LinuxCNCPi in to, and that was reall handy. But the one in this room is bolted to the wall with no sockets accessible.
03:36 PM gloops: what to do with no plugs lol
03:38 PM gloops: maybe a good opportunity to do things that require being plugged in, hard but probably good occassionally
03:38 PM andypugh: ?
03:38 PM gloops: things that dont require being plugged in
03:39 PM andypugh: There aren’t many of those that you can do when away from home.
04:34 PM Deejay: gn8
04:50 PM _unreal_: does deejay say anything other then gn8
05:25 PM jthornton: interesting the Raspberry Pi 4 B user instructions contain no useful information in 27 different languages lol
05:27 PM * jthornton thinks he can figure out where 3 of the 4 heat sinks go by there size but the 4th does not match anything...
05:29 PM * Tom_L hates putting up siding
05:29 PM Tom_L: but it is done
05:29 PM jthornton: that's the best part
05:30 PM Tom_L: gotta get a few corners
05:31 PM jthornton: I got one of the drains mostly installed for the lean to on the north end, still need to cut through my levee for the drain pipe to the forest
06:45 PM _unreal_: jthornton, I'm SHOCKED
06:45 PM jthornton: why?
06:46 PM _unreal_: no instructions rpi4
06:46 PM _unreal_: no usable instructions
06:47 PM jthornton: well the Vilros box did have instructions, I was talking about the box the rpi4 came in...
06:47 PM Tom_L: capn doesn't speak too highly of them
06:47 PM jthornton: yea I know
06:48 PM Tom_L: that rock64 might be ok
06:48 PM Tom_L: maybe ethernet cards with it
06:49 PM Tom_L: the ethernet card would be bigger than the µc
06:49 PM jthornton: hmm symbol failed
06:50 PM Tom_L: micro
06:50 PM jthornton: ah ok
06:50 PM Tom_L: uC
06:50 PM Tom_L: better?
06:50 PM jthornton: yea
06:50 PM jthornton: dinner time here
06:51 PM Tom_L: just had lunch/dinner
06:57 PM _unreal_: I wish I could find a MICRO or mini what ever 3-4 jaw lathe chuck. something that could attach to a 1/4" shaft
06:58 PM Tom_L: why do you need something that small?
06:58 PM _unreal_: because I have a tiny worm drive
06:58 PM _unreal_: one sec
06:59 PM _unreal_: bottom right https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN0PJNIhsdLWV0suLwifby3I7DUetpdpmPybMvaWq6HqrDBZEGqSNDdCal_4F3BjA/photo/AF1QipMU5KGMCxyBBYh0ABBbpVSMTFSRr-MuA2S46MSQ?key=NHdNaE52MDJwQWVvaWlXREJ3bkg5MUxYMm1rNmh3
07:00 PM _unreal_: brb getting a beer resting for a little longer then making din din for the munchkin
07:01 PM Tom_L: what material are the risers on you cnc made from?
07:02 PM _unreal_: thats a very old photo but anything green is G10
07:02 PM _unreal_: all the rails are iron pipes
07:03 PM Tom_L: the only G10 i know of is to set the tool table
07:04 PM Tom_L: or coordinate system
07:04 PM _unreal_: google "g10 frp"
07:04 PM Tom_L: get some more and make it taller
07:04 PM _unreal_: heh
07:04 PM _unreal_: I could
07:04 PM Tom_L: the sides
07:04 PM Tom_L: you need more z right?
07:05 PM _unreal_: kind of
07:05 PM _unreal_: it would be nice to at least have the bottom of the Z carriage higher
07:05 PM _unreal_: its 1.5" above the table with out a waste board
07:05 PM _unreal_: though the Z its self can travel 4"
07:05 PM Tom_L: so raise it 2"
07:06 PM _unreal_: I could I should but its more trouble then I want to deal with
07:06 PM Tom_L: and now you got something to mill :)
07:06 PM _unreal_: the real issue is the cross member
07:06 PM _unreal_: is in the way
07:08 PM _unreal_: and I really dont want to deal with making new vert arms because its so SOOOOO damn much work
07:08 PM _unreal_: drilling tapping. everything has to be perfect
07:08 PM _unreal_: it would likely take me 4 days
07:08 PM _unreal_: so the machine works. I'm good
07:08 PM Tom_L: i modeled mine so i can reproduce the parts that are machined
07:09 PM Tom_L: you should do that on your next one
07:09 PM Tom_L: so if i want to make changes i can
07:09 PM _unreal_: My machine is big enough I could re-mill any pat on it
07:09 PM _unreal_: part
07:09 PM Tom_L: there you go
07:09 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, you'll love my next cnc I'm building
07:10 PM _unreal_: its for work.. >:) AND ONLY i can use it when its done
07:10 PM _unreal_: because I own it.
07:10 PM _unreal_: I'm making a mill thats going to be aprox 24x38"
07:10 PM _unreal_: I'd rather have a 4' work area but I have an AMAZING base
07:11 PM _unreal_: thats all steel and perfect for a SUPER rugged small machine
07:15 PM _unreal_: but I'm not likley to mill any of the parts because its all hehe fiberglass
08:12 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, i think you showed the base
08:40 PM flyback: one thing i never did get
08:40 PM flyback: how the fuck do you guys drill a perfect center hole
08:40 PM flyback: I mean the bit isn't infinitely small to a point
08:41 PM flyback: when you try to draw the center with a pencil
08:41 PM flyback: the lead mark has thickness width
08:42 PM flyback: how do you ensure you aren't offset
08:56 PM skunkworks: a scribe?
08:57 PM skunkworks: center punch?
08:57 PM MarcelineVQ: you could pick the center of the pencil mark width, but I don't know of a lot of places working in thousands that are marking in pencil to get there
09:04 PM MarcelineVQ: flyback: are you asking about spot drilling or putting a center hole in on a lathe, what operation and bit do you have in mind when you ask your question? If you're just amazed by people that developed the skill to get their by-hand drill holes perfect every time, I'm with you on that one
09:06 PM MarcelineVQ: flyback: Even when I use a small auto-center-punch so I can get right on my mark and then enlarge it with a bigger manual center-punch so the dril-bit can't walk I'm lucky if it all lines up at the end
09:31 PM flyback: I mean anything
09:31 PM flyback: lathe
09:31 PM flyback: just a holt in a wheel
09:31 PM flyback: etc
09:32 PM flyback: how do you get it dead center when nothing is perfectely flat or infintely narrow
09:32 PM flyback: even the point on the end of a drill pit has some width
09:41 PM _unreal_: when you hold a dril bit in a secure device. like a drill press or any other device.
09:45 PM _unreal_: its easy to keep it on center because there is little or NO play
09:54 PM Tom_L: flyback, are you mixing spot drills with center drills?
09:54 PM Tom_L: typically a spot drill is larger and comes to a point so it won't flex nearly as much
09:55 PM Tom_L: center drills have a smaller point drill and a larger body that tapers into it
09:56 PM Tom_L: https://www.zoro.com/static/cms/product/full/Z-wrBujcpEx_.JPG
09:56 PM Tom_L: https://3.imimg.com/data3/AL/AF/MY-3838818/centre-drill-bit-500x500.jpg
09:56 PM Tom_L: both server a distinct purpose
09:58 PM Tom_L: the oversize body in either case lends to it's rigidity
11:13 PM flyback: no you missed the point
11:13 PM flyback: they have to compensate the diameter of the thing you are putting in the center itself
11:13 PM flyback: so it's not lopsided
11:13 PM flyback: whether be the drill or the final shaft
11:15 PM flyback: nevermind
11:15 PM flyback: I can't explain what I meman
