01:54 AM Deejay: moin
02:40 AM gloops: right, todays brain teaser, machining 3 sides
02:41 AM gloops: or machining 3 sides where the corners are decorative shapes
02:42 AM gloops: with no A axis
02:43 AM * gloops gets pencil and sketchpad
02:48 AM gloops: *sketch begins with stick men, stars spirals then random crazy scribbling
02:57 AM gloops: this is all about reference points
02:59 AM gloops: with this kind of shape i can only guarantee 3 references X,Y 0 and the centre of the stock
03:07 AM gloops: the X,Y is fairly simple to maintain, Z is the tricky one
03:10 AM gloops: which is where centre reference comes in
03:18 AM gloops: done
05:01 AM Tom_L: morning
05:54 AM jthornton: morning
05:54 AM XXCoder: morn
05:56 AM XXCoder: I like this channel so far. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KZIga3bJ3M
05:56 AM XXCoder: he also actually captions.
05:57 AM XXCoder: well auto captions but good quality
06:45 AM jthornton: not too interesting to watch someone clean a car door...
06:45 AM XXCoder: thats not all he does :)
06:46 AM XXCoder: he basically did entire interior, leaving off inside top since he need to do external stuff later
06:58 AM jthornton: gotta get the siding up on the kitchen wall today... rain in a few days I think
07:00 AM XXCoder: nice
07:01 AM XXCoder: ugh more and more sun
07:01 AM XXCoder: monday will be hottest so far it seems, at 85f
07:01 AM XXCoder: not as bad as last year but ugh
07:01 AM jthornton: finished prepping the wall yesterday so ready to go
07:05 AM jthornton: the biggest problem is the 16' pieces installing them by myself
07:53 AM jdh: hire a helper
11:34 AM gloops: something pretty crappy about these stl models from Osborne Wood
11:34 AM gloops: these are the models they machine their stuff from
11:35 AM gloops: theyre scans of their stuff - not great
11:35 AM gloops: ARENT the models they machine their stuff from
11:35 AM jym: Loetmichel: yo
11:36 AM jym: Morning folks!
11:39 AM gloops: stl is also tri mesh, difficult to edit, and difficult to convert to quads
11:39 AM gloops: so basically difficult to tidy the crappy models up
11:42 AM jym: Gotta love it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpZdUgBzh7Y
12:21 PM Connor: Looking to get this lathe.. it looks like it has some inclusions on the ways.. but.. the side of it.. not the tops.. https://scontent.fbna1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/67547238_513277042571399_215114695445577728_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_oc=AQm6kdwwnCRp6Lj78F_r-x3eHemmHRdhPYHoqJ0VxI1qPaiZa_C6BhXs-NIKtE6uDCM&_nc_ht=scontent.fbna1-1.fna&oh=300357459aff120aaba048c608fbc4e5&oe=5DDF79E1

12:22 PM Connor: Any thoughts on those? Major issue?
12:27 PM perry_j1987: what are you looking to spend on this lathe
12:28 PM Connor: $2800 $2500 if we pick it up in the next few days.
12:28 PM skunkworks: what is the lathe?
12:29 PM skunkworks: any other pictures?
12:29 PM Connor: It's a Taiwanese 13x40 (13x36?) MSC branded lathe.
12:29 PM Connor: https://scontent.fbna1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/67775657_475804219913904_8070638407002357760_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_oc=AQli-VGznUsltfySr0mHkbKYRzE9F8bS9VNQ5JW2eGZHi-4fGgaJ-b-lJ4N-pinQGak&_nc_ht=scontent.fbna1-1.fna&oh=b1918dc1180f0a5d165e6f3e6098bf36&oe=5DE23806

12:30 PM Connor: vs a PM-1236T brand new for $5500
12:30 PM Connor: It's got a MT#4-1/2 headstock.. which I thought was odd.. but, does have the adapter sleeve to get it to MT#3
12:30 PM gloops: ways looking a bit rough
12:30 PM Connor: A 5C Collet closer - mising the adapter sleve.
12:31 PM Connor: https://scontent.fbna1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/67492577_502939380475939_7070055054467661824_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_oc=AQldIkqeOMy9wdrmsCwS6hwhZqm_A3kpqLbR49eVPQamCSEb847PAKYd96w5Ti5TUxk&_nc_ht=scontent.fbna1-1.fna&oh=0f31d4494912c5ef05a9b180ac99d777&oe=5DEEB115

12:31 PM Connor: a few more of the ways
12:32 PM gloops: what do you think those faults are? casting fissures or something?
12:32 PM Connor: Inclusions from the casting process most likely.
12:32 PM gloops: if its been a knock you have to ponder if it hasnt been bent
12:33 PM Connor: It looks more like a casting than a knock.. it has no other damage.
12:33 PM Connor: They normally bondo that on the painted surfaces, but, couldn't since it was machined.. I'm guessing they didn't feel like it was a big deal and sent it out..
12:33 PM gloops: looks to be some scoring - not hardened?
12:34 PM Connor: Dunno, it's 6 hours away.
12:34 PM gloops: probably isnt a big deal
12:34 PM Connor: You look at the top of the V's or the sides?
12:34 PM skunkworks: Double v ways - those surfaces are probably just to keep the saddle in place incase of a big cut
12:35 PM Connor: I have $3000 to spend at the moment.. so, get this thing.. or wait a while longer and get a new PM-1236T
12:36 PM Connor: I like that it has a foot brake, coolant and is 13x vs 12x. I wish it had more threading options.. not as many as the PM
12:37 PM gloops: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general-archive/opinions-msc-also-grizzly-prince-lathe-13-x-40-a-74048/
12:38 PM gloops: seem to be fair reviews on those lathes, although that doesnt say much about that example
12:39 PM Connor: anyone know the grizzly number?
12:40 PM gloops: same as warco et al
12:44 PM Connor: G9730
01:29 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: how are you doing?
02:07 PM perry_j1987: Connor you need to verify if that lathe controls allow for time travel (as per this old tony)
02:11 PM djdelorie: aside from the usual "travel forward at one second per second" that we all have :-)
02:18 PM jym: $1.1 MILLION... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPNS4vUlX60
02:29 PM perry_j1987: ok that was a hillarious bit with youtube heh
02:30 PM jym: perry_j1987: you think that was, chekc this out... https://youtu.be/wpZdUgBzh7Y
02:37 PM Tom_L: skunkworks good
02:37 PM Tom_L: about got things back in order
02:39 PM Tom_L: jthornton, you finish your siding i've got a few you can install for me
02:40 PM Tom_L: i went ahead and got a few delivered when i got the baseboard
03:18 PM beachbumpete1: Connor that looks like a nice machine even with the casting issues.
03:18 PM Connor: I think so.
03:18 PM Connor: Nice size too.
03:19 PM beachbumpete1: I doubt the PM machine is the same quality honestly even tho I hear good things about them.
03:19 PM beachbumpete1: I wish I had never sold my old 12x36
03:19 PM Connor: They're both Taiwanaise machines.
03:19 PM beachbumpete1: still working on this damn CNC lathe but its just not a priority right now
03:20 PM Connor: I'm still working on my Damn G0704. :)
03:20 PM beachbumpete1: They are but those headstocks on the MSC machines seem much more substantial
03:20 PM Connor: Even though I picked up the bridgeport to finish it up.
03:21 PM beachbumpete1: also looks like a D1-6 headstock but hard to tell from the pictures.
03:21 PM Connor: D1-4
03:21 PM beachbumpete1: also includes a qctp
03:21 PM Connor: MT#4-1/2
03:21 PM Connor: https://www.grizzly.com/products/Grizzly-13-x-40-High-Precision-Tool-Room-Lathe-3-HP-220V-Single-Phase/G9730
03:21 PM beachbumpete1: looks bigger than that in the pictures but ok
03:21 PM Connor: Basically the same as this one.
03:22 PM beachbumpete1: Pretty good machine nonetheless
03:23 PM beachbumpete1: Hell Id take it ;)
03:23 PM beachbumpete1: Gotta go good luck my friend.
03:23 PM Connor: I'll have to find or make a MT4-1/2 to 5C sleeve. It has a Collet Closer
03:23 PM Connor: but, missing that part.
03:45 PM Deejay: gn8
05:32 PM perry_j1987: its too early for me to be ready for bed
05:33 PM jym: perry_j1987: goto your room and think about what you've done
05:33 PM perry_j1987: heh
05:35 PM jthornton: Tom_L, don't hold your breath it will be a while... got all but 12 tiny pieces and 1 16' piece up on the kitchen wall today
05:40 PM Wolf__: whats bed?
05:41 PM Wolf__: I took a nap 3hr this morning at my shop in my truck around 6am...
05:58 PM _unreal_: so milling a plaque for work. and naturally I break my finest rasp bit before I even start.. didnt noticed that my spindle was unplugged
05:58 PM _unreal_: TOTALY dumb founded as to why
05:58 PM _unreal_: I have no memory of unplugging it
06:06 PM tiwake: happens to me all the time
06:06 PM tiwake: well, generally not the tool breaking part
06:14 PM Tom_L: jthornton, i've only got 12 16' pieces to go up
06:15 PM jthornton: I forgot how many I have to put up, but I'm only replacing the siding on 4 walls, upstairs is T shaped to lots of walls...
06:16 PM Tom_L: i'm waiting til my kid is off to hold the other end :)
06:16 PM Tom_L: i'm just patching some low bad spots
06:16 PM jthornton: yea I had to get my buddy to help today
06:16 PM jthornton: what kind are you putting up?
06:16 PM Tom_L: 12" masonite
06:16 PM Tom_L: cause that's what's there
06:16 PM jthornton: ouch replacing bottom rows is fun
06:17 PM Tom_L: i'm well aware
06:17 PM jthornton: are they held in with those L shaped nails or just regular nails?
06:17 PM Tom_L: i could do a few myself but i'm still moving and sorting crap for the basement
06:18 PM Tom_L: regular galvanized
06:18 PM Tom_L: had enough excess carpet left to do the utility room so i layed some in there last night
06:18 PM Tom_L: laid*
06:18 PM Tom_L: tired.
06:19 PM jthornton: I need to toss a bunch of crap out and clean up the shop
06:19 PM CaptHindsight: Connor: $3k can buy you a lot of lathe in the right part of the USA, where are you located?
06:19 PM Tom_L: set the water heater out hoping someone will steal it
06:19 PM jthornton: I hear that I'm whooped out
06:19 PM jthornton: put a for sale sign on it lol
06:19 PM Tom_L: so far all they've done is knocked it over and broke the control
06:20 PM Tom_L: not that it would get re'used
06:20 PM jthornton: did the tank itself split?
06:20 PM Tom_L: i didn't bother to open it but i think so
06:20 PM Tom_L: once i get caught up i'll haul it to the iron scrap yard
06:21 PM Tom_L: was just hoping someone would do it for me
06:22 PM CaptHindsight: we get scrap guys nearly every day around here
06:22 PM Tom_L: same place i got the steel for my mill
06:22 PM CaptHindsight: sometimes more often
06:22 PM Tom_L: around here they know if it's inside the fence they better not fuck with it
06:22 PM jthornton: I hear that, just took the old door to my neighbors house her son in law and daughter are building a house on a shoe string budget so it won't go to waste
06:23 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: not trying to patch and weld it up for a few more years? :)
06:23 PM Tom_L: might keep it for a spare
06:24 PM Tom_L: cut it in half for a hog trough
06:24 PM Tom_L: but i'm not on a farm
06:24 PM jthornton: there you go
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: BBQ
06:25 PM Tom_L: have one that rarely gets used already
06:25 PM CaptHindsight: slice in half add hinges and some brackets for grates
06:26 PM CaptHindsight: macho it up and put it on CL
06:26 PM Tom_L: cut the bottom out and gas inside to see how high i can launch it
06:26 PM CaptHindsight: probably how you feel about it
06:27 PM roycroft: i just picked up some aluminium bar, so it's time to go make a jig using the stacked tables on my mill for real now
06:27 PM CaptHindsight: I'd probably use it for target practice after the leak
06:27 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight it's all good really. it was about time to remodel anyway
06:27 PM roycroft: hopefully it will work out as well as when i traced the outline
06:28 PM Tom_L: roycroft, you're near seattle right?
06:28 PM roycroft: no
06:28 PM roycroft: i'm closer to portland
06:28 PM Tom_L: hmm i thought you were
06:28 PM roycroft: well
06:28 PM roycroft: i'm 4.5 hours from seattle
06:28 PM roycroft: if you consider that "near"
06:28 PM Tom_L: don't they have aluminum scrap yards out there by the dozen?
06:28 PM roycroft: i used to live 90 minutes from there
06:29 PM roycroft: we do have them here
06:29 PM roycroft: the scrap in the local scrapyards is usually pretty crappy
06:29 PM Tom_L: ours is fairly organized
06:29 PM jthornton: roycroft, got the flap wheels yesterday and made in germany... look pretty goog
06:29 PM jthornton: d
06:29 PM roycroft: but the steel yard where i get most of my metal stock has some scrap that's in much better place than the scrap yards do
06:29 PM roycroft: great, jthornton
06:29 PM roycroft: i know you'll like them
06:30 PM roycroft: i don't know if you saw the end part of the discussion we had here the other day, but the zirconia flap wheels at harbor freight are $6.99 each
06:30 PM jthornton: I also got woocommerce setup on dreamhost so I can prepare for the change
06:30 PM roycroft: and those last about 7 seconds
06:30 PM roycroft: awesome
06:30 PM roycroft: i'll still help as best i can if you have any questions
06:30 PM Tom_L: jthornton, changing hosts for your stores?
06:30 PM jthornton: just trying to get a decent home page lol, that may take a while
06:30 PM roycroft: but i'm glad i don't have to worry about setting up a vhost for you
06:30 PM jthornton: Tom_L, yea
06:30 PM roycroft: i would not mind doing it, i just don't have that much time
06:31 PM CaptHindsight: pcw_mesa: getting closer to work on the XY2-100, if you get a config for a 6i25 or 7i92 I can mess with a driver
06:31 PM roycroft: i'm going on vacation in a week
06:31 PM roycroft: and i have about a month's worth of work to get done before then
06:31 PM jthornton: nice, we are going at the end of the month
06:31 PM roycroft: not to mention getting things ready for the vacation
06:31 PM roycroft: yeah, i hope it's going to be a nice trip
06:31 PM roycroft: i'm going to the southern oregon coast
06:31 PM CaptHindsight: what is vacation? :)
06:31 PM roycroft: i only hope that the smoke from the milepost 97 fire hasn't blown that direction
06:32 PM jthornton: I've never been there, we are going to the outer banks
06:32 PM roycroft: the prevailing wind here is sothwesterly
06:32 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight you should try it on sometime, it might fit
06:32 PM roycroft: but we get noreasters a lot
06:32 PM pcw_mesa: CaptHindsight: ok I'll cobble one up
06:32 PM roycroft: and if we get a noreaster, it will blow straight to where i'll be camping
06:33 PM roycroft: i'm probably going to spend a day or two visiting friends down in humboldt county, and i know the smoke won't have blown that far
06:33 PM roycroft: the fire is 30% contained now, so they're making slow progress
06:34 PM jym: roycroft: Humboldt, so whch smoke you taking about?
06:34 PM CaptHindsight: I'll likely go back to Europe soon
06:34 PM roycroft: i'm talking about the milepost 97 fire here in oregon
06:34 PM roycroft: i'll be camping down in brookings
06:34 PM CaptHindsight: UK, France, Germany and Poland
06:34 PM roycroft: the smoke could reach there if the winds are right
06:35 PM jthornton: hmm humboldt county is where Guy Fieri is from
06:35 PM roycroft: but what i was saying is that when i head down to humboldt there's no way the smoke will blow down there
06:35 PM roycroft: humboldt county traditionally generates its own smoke
06:35 PM roycroft: and that smoke doesn't come from burning trees :)
06:35 PM jym: roycroft: That's where the highest pot growing area is
06:35 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: a relaxing sounding area
06:35 PM roycroft: that is what i'm alluding to
06:36 PM jym: CaptHindsight: you really going back to EU?
06:37 PM CaptHindsight: jym: might even stay
06:37 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Tired of FL? US? NA?
06:38 PM roycroft: the usa is pretty messed up right now
06:38 PM roycroft: i hope we get our act together
06:38 PM roycroft: and soon
06:38 PM CaptHindsight: it's like watching fiends destroy themselves staying here
06:39 PM jym: CaptHindsight: In what respect?
06:39 PM CaptHindsight: I rather be somewhere that appreciates science, critical thinking and progress
06:39 PM CaptHindsight: the arts etc
06:39 PM roycroft: our politics turned really toxic 25 years ago
06:39 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
06:39 PM roycroft: and that toxicity has slowly poisoned every aspect of our society
06:40 PM jym: CaptHindsight: ah
06:40 PM CaptHindsight: too lng and I fear it will be too long before it swings back to something healthy
06:40 PM roycroft: i'm not one to abandon ship
06:40 PM roycroft: otherwise i'd consider leaving
06:40 PM roycroft: i don't consider an immigrant going back home abandoning ship
06:40 PM CaptHindsight: I'd rather live some of my later days somewhere happy
06:40 PM roycroft: but a native-born citizen, yes
06:41 PM roycroft: so you're going to denmark?
06:41 PM roycroft: the happiest country on earth
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: it's possible, shopping around for new homes
06:41 PM roycroft: i think all scandanavian countries are pretty happy
06:41 PM roycroft: but denmark the happiest of them all
06:41 PM CaptHindsight: tried China but they bat shit crazy
06:42 PM CaptHindsight: HK and Taiwan will soon follow
06:42 PM roycroft: don't go to what's left of the uk
06:42 PM CaptHindsight: Thailand is just too humid for me
06:42 PM roycroft: it's turning into our kind of crazy
06:42 PM CaptHindsight: Ireland seems a bit more immune
06:42 PM roycroft: yeah
06:43 PM CaptHindsight: had a friend move there a few years ago
06:43 PM CaptHindsight: she loves it and is from Wisconsin
06:43 PM roycroft: things are getting so bad in the uk that over 30% of the welsh people consider themselves at least "indycurious"
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: not sure if I can adapt to wearing wooden shoes in Holland
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: i like the beer in Belgium
06:44 PM roycroft: i figured that post-brexit northern ireland would reunite with the irish republic, and scotland would leave the uk
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: might still happen
06:44 PM roycroft: but wales has been in union with england for so long, and there's been virtually no real independence movement in wales
06:44 PM roycroft: i did not think they would want to leave too
06:44 PM roycroft: but it looks like they are considering it
06:45 PM roycroft: plaid cymru are now polling ahead of every other party in wales
06:45 PM roycroft: and they've never come even close before
06:45 PM sync: if not the IRA will have fun again
06:46 PM roycroft: the ira are already back at it
06:46 PM roycroft: and boris doesn't seem to care at all about ireland
06:46 PM CaptHindsight: why i want to visit in person
06:47 PM roycroft: he's going to be worse than may, because he'll actually get things done
06:48 PM CaptHindsight: jym: with things being so tribal here now, it hard to help
06:48 PM CaptHindsight: you can't reason with people that don't think
06:48 PM jym: heh
06:49 PM roycroft: so it it unrealistic for me to try to mill 3/8" aluminium (6061) with a 1/2" end mill in a single pass?
06:49 PM roycroft: this is with my little mill/drill
06:49 PM Tom_L: no
06:49 PM roycroft: good
06:49 PM Tom_L: well maybe on a light mill
06:49 PM CaptHindsight: it might take a generation or two that didn't drink the koolaid to turn things around
06:49 PM Tom_L: that would surely be pushing it's limit
06:50 PM roycroft: i should probably rough cut the outline so that i'm only taking off a little material, instead of trying to cut the full 1/2" width, eh?
06:50 PM roycroft: like 0.010" outside the finished dimension or so
06:50 PM CaptHindsight: at .125 depth max
06:50 PM roycroft: the problem is that my x-y table is not very accurate
06:51 PM Tom_L: i can do 1/4 x 1/4 ok on mine
06:51 PM roycroft: i can't use the dials on the handles at all - i have to use a dial indicator
06:51 PM CaptHindsight: last time i got greedy with 1/2 endmill and aluminum the end mill pulled a bit out of the holder
06:51 PM roycroft: and i don't trust that i'll be able to repeat the cut perfectly on a second pass
06:51 PM roycroft: it's ok if the overall dimensions are off by a few thousandths
06:51 PM roycroft: but i want to do it in one pass
06:51 PM CaptHindsight: so my Z was 0.50" too deep
06:52 PM CaptHindsight: 0.05"
06:52 PM roycroft: so doing the rough cut on the bandsaw first will probably help a lot
06:52 PM roycroft: then i'll still be milling the full 3/8" thickness, but only removing 0.010" or so
06:53 PM roycroft: this is a 2d part
06:53 PM roycroft: if i go too deep that would not matter
06:53 PM roycroft: what i need is a better x-y table
06:53 PM roycroft: but i have what i have right now
06:54 PM CaptHindsight: oh thats right I had a 4 vs 2 flute in the spindle on top of it, so it was going way to fast for the feed rate
06:54 PM roycroft: https://www.grizzly.com/products/Grizzly-Compound-Slide-Table/G5757
06:54 PM roycroft: what i have is virtually identical to that
06:54 PM roycroft: but i did not buy it from grizzly
06:54 PM roycroft: i'm sure it was made in the same factory
06:54 PM roycroft: i got it for a drill press
06:54 PM roycroft: and it's been fine for that
06:54 PM roycroft: but it's not very accurate for a milling machine
06:54 PM jthornton: got a lot of slop on the lead screws I'd bet
06:55 PM roycroft: a whole lot of slop
06:55 PM roycroft: and the lead screws are not cut accurately at all
06:55 PM roycroft: some day i should probably turn some new acme lead screws for it on my lathe
06:55 PM roycroft: and make some nuts
06:55 PM roycroft: but again, i have what i have right now
06:56 PM jthornton: I had one similar to that but never did do anything useful with it
06:56 PM roycroft: fortunately, for the stuff i'm doing now i only need to do one operation on that x-y table
06:56 PM roycroft: most of the movement will be on the main bed
06:56 PM perry_j1987: i had thought of making one of those cnc a while back for the drillpress just to do repeatable holes on parts
06:56 PM roycroft: and there are two rotational operations that i'll do with the rotary table
06:56 PM jthornton: can you lock down the upper dovetail?
06:57 PM roycroft: i can tighten the gib screws :)
06:57 PM jthornton: that might help a lot
06:57 PM roycroft: i already took it apart, honed the gibs and ways
06:57 PM roycroft: and that made it about 500% more accurate
06:58 PM jthornton: I bet, anything you do to improve it makes a big difference
06:58 PM * jthornton puts on his chef hat and starts some chow
06:58 PM roycroft: the only real problem is that the one operation i need to do on that table is an x movement of just under 4"
06:58 PM roycroft: and i don't have a 4" dial indicator
06:58 PM roycroft: so i have to move 1", reset the indicator, move 1", reset the indicator, etc.
06:59 PM roycroft: and that's an invitation to cumulative errors that turn out to be significant
07:00 PM roycroft: i've had that x-y table for like 25 years
07:00 PM roycroft: it
07:00 PM roycroft: has never worked as well as it does now
07:01 PM roycroft: but it's still a lot more sloppy than i would like
07:01 PM roycroft: my rotary table is a little sticky in one part too, and i've never completely disassembled it to clean, relube, and possibly debur
07:01 PM CaptHindsight: i have a 60 year old bridgeport to restore
07:02 PM roycroft: i should probably do that before i start making parts for real
07:02 PM CaptHindsight: pretty much just sloppy everywhere
07:07 PM Tom_L: i tossed one simiar in the attic
07:07 PM Tom_L: scrollback bites again
07:09 PM Tom_L: (compound slide table)
07:09 PM roycroft: *chuckle*
07:09 PM roycroft: i just watched a youtube video on that x-y table
07:09 PM roycroft: a different vendor (phase ii), but the same table
07:09 PM roycroft: one of the commentators suggested replacing the lead screws with ball screws
07:09 PM roycroft: commentors
07:11 PM CaptHindsight: whats in there now? lead screws and a brass nut?
07:11 PM jthornton: ball screws on a manual anything is not good
07:11 PM CaptHindsight: nah just up the preload and you're good to go
07:11 PM roycroft: yes, capthindsight
07:11 PM Rab: jthornton, why's that? No holding power?
07:11 PM roycroft: i don't see investing $400 or more on ball screws for a $129 table
07:12 PM jthornton: no friction to help hold it still
07:13 PM roycroft: i did a little manual machining on a bridgeport that had ball screws (but the rest of the cnc stuff had been removed)
07:13 PM roycroft: you have to lock whichever axis you're not intentionally moving
07:13 PM roycroft: it's a pain in the butt
07:13 PM jthornton: yep
07:13 PM roycroft: the school was un-cnc'ing that machine
07:14 PM jthornton: that's why manual mills and lathes don't come with ball screws
07:14 PM roycroft: and hadn't gotten around to replacing the ball screws yet
07:14 PM jthornton: lol, reverse cncing
07:14 PM roycroft: and it was the only one available at the time
07:14 PM roycroft: i learned why it was always idle
07:15 PM CaptHindsight: Chinese ballscrews are now lower cost than USA lead screws
07:15 PM roycroft: even with the tariffs?
07:15 PM roycroft: which are going up again
07:16 PM roycroft: ok, i've finally decided
07:16 PM roycroft: although i want to make these jigs really soon
07:16 PM roycroft: i really should disassemble the rotary table and tune it up before i do so
07:17 PM CaptHindsight: yes, I just happened to find some Tompson lead screws on ebay for cheap that were NOS
07:17 PM CaptHindsight: and in bulk
07:17 PM roycroft: the issue i have is that when i'm turning the crank to rotate the table the crank will disengage
07:17 PM roycroft: and i'll lose my indexing
07:17 PM CaptHindsight: 1/2" 10 TPI ~24" long
07:18 PM roycroft: there's a lever right behind the crank that engages the crank when turned all the way to the left, and disengages when turned to the right
07:18 PM roycroft: it disengages on its own at one spot while i'm rotating it
07:18 PM roycroft: so there's probably a burr or something on the worm gear that is causing that
07:19 PM roycroft: i'm assuming it's a worm gear inside the thing
07:20 PM roycroft: and that's the simplest way to change the rotation axis
07:23 PM jthornton: take a photo when it's all apart
07:26 PM jthornton: seems like there should be a spring loaded detent for that so it stays in position

07:52 PM skunkworks: pcw_home: sorry... http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20190801_190055.jpg
07:57 PM skunkworks: getting there.. Need some better knobs.. maybe

08:00 PM jym: jthornton: Like golf? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knulbCi88cY
08:23 PM BaconBaked: Sorry to bother you folks, could anyone help me with post processing in fusion 360 for a 5 axis router? "Work offset has not been specified. Using G54 as WCS." and after twaking around, it changed to "Rewind handling during post processing must be specifically handled in the post."
08:36 PM Tom_L: asking a bit late in the evening for most
08:36 PM Tom_L: and i don't use fusion 360
08:36 PM BaconBaked: -3 GMT here
08:37 PM Tom_L: 8:32PM here -6?
08:38 PM Tom_L: andy uses it quite a bit i think but he's in Spain this week
08:39 PM Tom_L: sounds like some sort of rotary axis move to start? error
08:39 PM BaconBaked: i have no idea... it is able to post for Mach3
08:40 PM Tom_L: oh wait, maybe _unreal_ uses it and may have a rotary
08:40 PM Tom_L: but i'm not sure if he's using linuxcnc
08:40 PM BaconBaked: but in mach3 simulation... things dont look very well.... X/Y/Z works... but I dont see A or C being interpreted
08:41 PM Tom_L: did you define them in fusion?
08:41 PM Tom_L: head, cradle etc
08:41 PM Tom_L: i dunno how they do it
08:42 PM BaconBaked: they kinda don't I think, I maybe very wrong. you just use the post processor to account for the tool size and in a head/head config things should just work themselves out
08:42 PM BaconBaked: but I may be very wrong
08:42 PM BaconBaked: I am trying to replicate a machine buit by a guy on youtube
08:42 PM Tom_L: https://www.nyccnc.com/fusion-360-4th-axis-cam-tutorial/
08:43 PM Tom_L: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/cad-cam/fusion-360-full-4th-axis-345010/
08:44 PM Tom_L: maybe it won't do what you want?
08:45 PM BaconBaked: I mean... the simulation runs and the axis move correctly.... would it not be able to post process it only.
08:46 PM BaconBaked: The mach3 is not being able to show the AC moving
08:46 PM Tom_L: you would need one that supported 4 & 5 axis in the configuration you have
08:46 PM Tom_L: be it in the head or a cradle
08:46 PM BaconBaked: but the angles decrease and increase
08:46 PM BaconBaked: on the numbers
08:49 PM BaconBaked: oh well... I'm trying to make too big steps
08:49 PM Tom_L: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-manufacture/fusion360-post-processors-for-4th-axis/td-p/7203253
09:02 PM _unreal_: huh?
09:03 PM _unreal_: use what/
09:03 PM _unreal_: ?
09:10 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I have a rotory though I have not activly used it yet
09:11 PM _unreal_: I should though
09:16 PM BaconBaked: if anyone is interested in what I am trying to replicate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGKNc387LxY
09:16 PM BaconBaked: i dont even want to cut, i wanted to build a spray painting "5 axis"
09:17 PM BaconBaked: well... i'll keep trying to contact the guy in the video and maybe comeback tomorrow sooner
09:47 PM roycroft: do any of you watch "forged in fire"?
10:13 PM Tom_L: i've seen it
10:13 PM Tom_L: but don't watch it regularly
10:14 PM roycroft: what i wonder is:
10:14 PM roycroft: the contestants are allegedly vetted before they can appear
10:14 PM roycroft: so they should know what they're doing, for the most part
10:15 PM roycroft: but every other episode or so, at least one of them either quenches in water or quenches in oil and then in water while the blade is still hot
10:15 PM roycroft: and about 80% of the time when they do that the blade cracks
10:15 PM roycroft: do they get paid to take a dive like that for dramtic effect?
10:16 PM roycroft: also
10:16 PM roycroft: the size parameters for the blades are stipulated clearly
10:16 PM roycroft: yet fairly often blades are turned in that are outwith the stated parameters
10:16 PM roycroft: again, do they get paid to do that?
10:17 PM roycroft: or does the pressure of the contest somehow make them forget how to use a tape measure?
10:17 PM Tom_L: i'm sure they get paid just to appear. beyond that is anyone's guess
10:17 PM roycroft: a lot of things go wrong that are understandable
10:17 PM roycroft: but those two things i just can't understand ever happening
10:17 PM Tom_L: some ppl cave under pressure too
10:18 PM roycroft: i may be taking a class with one of the forged and fire winners
10:18 PM roycroft: i'll try to get the skinny on what goes on during the contest from him
10:18 PM roycroft: but he probably had to sign a non-disclosure
10:18 PM roycroft: so i may not get much
