#linuxcnc Calendar

01:55 AM Deejay: moin
04:50 AM jthornton: morning
04:50 AM XXCoder: morning
04:50 AM gloops: hi
04:51 AM gloops: dual core 32bit processor - any known compatibility issues with linuxcnc?
04:51 AM gloops: also WINFAST PX6800 LE TDH GRAPHICS CARD
04:54 AM gloops: bloke is asking a bit over the odds for it, but it is local, not a lot of money but if it dont run linuxcnc ill be stuck with it because nobody is gonna buy this for anything else
04:56 AM jthornton: take the live cd with you and test it out
04:57 AM gloops: its not set up running, just the box
04:59 AM gloops: basic Nvidia graphics, think debian reverts to a generic driver, but will run...
06:45 AM Tom_L: morning
06:57 AM jthornton: morning
06:58 AM jthornton: see you later in the day at Osage Beach
08:33 AM perry_j1987: morning
10:23 AM gloops: right, another box, another 2.8 install to remember how to do
10:51 AM gloops: waiting for /dev to be fully populated..forever
01:00 PM CaptHindsight: what is left of the hurricane should be here later in the week... but no drop in temp :(
01:07 PM CaptHindsight: need testers for the new RTAI and Linuxcnc https://github.com/andypugh/RTAI/releases/tag/v5.2.2-master-alpha.1
01:08 PM CaptHindsight: RTAI w/ kernel 4.14.132 + LinuxCNC debs
01:08 PM Tom_itx: so if i did a fresh stretch install, run one of those on top of it?
01:08 PM Tom_itx: then install lcnc?
01:09 PM CaptHindsight: "curious to know if they work on a bare-metal install of Stretch
01:09 PM CaptHindsight: or Sid (I don't _expect_ then to work on Buster)
01:09 PM CaptHindsight: Might also work on Mint, Ubuntu etc. That would be interesting too."
01:09 PM flyback: Tom_itx, https://imgur.com/G0gTpe3
01:09 PM flyback: haven;'t used it in yrs though
01:10 PM flyback: easier now to make one with avr-tiny and 3 shift regs
01:10 PM Tom_itx: ? eprom programmer?
01:13 PM flyback: yep
01:13 PM flyback: but since it only has dos and a unmaintained linux bin, I am going to program build something new
01:13 PM flyback: either with a arduino tiny and 3 shift regs or stm32
01:20 PM Tom_itx: CaptHindsight what's the difference in the last 2 rtai modules?
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: debug-symbols
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: rtai-modules-4.14.132-dbgsym_5.2.2-linuxcnc_amd64.deb
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: vs rtai-modules-4.14.132_5.2.2-linuxcnc_amd64.deb
01:28 PM Tom_itx: more for testing?
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: for test, yes
01:32 PM CaptHindsight: interested to see results on Intel systems
01:32 PM CaptHindsight: seems to work on one of Andy's all-in-one Intel PC's
01:32 PM Tom_itx: i'm workin on a flood but if i get a chance i'll try one
01:33 PM CaptHindsight: water heaters show no mercy
01:34 PM Tom_itx: so far nobody has seen one go quite like that
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: I've only had one go and it just flooded the apartment below
01:34 PM Tom_itx: i suppose it could have been alot worse had someone not been there to catch it
01:35 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
01:35 PM CaptHindsight: i used to make everyone aware of where the water shutoff is
01:35 PM Tom_L: same here
01:35 PM CaptHindsight: could be needed in winter as well
01:36 PM CaptHindsight: had a pipe freeze once but didn't leak
01:37 PM Tom_L: oh i've been there before too in the dead of winter
01:37 PM CaptHindsight: I bought a house once that had a flood between floor 1 and 2 as I discovered
01:37 PM Tom_L: fun
01:37 PM CaptHindsight: when I pulled the basement ceiling down I saw 100 year old joists that were curved like a saddle ~2"
01:38 PM Tom_L: ok i'm off
01:38 PM CaptHindsight: explained why the 1st floor had all new drywall and flooring when I got it
02:44 PM gloops: most joists have a bow in them before fitting, a good joiner checks and always fits the arc facing upward
03:02 PM firephoto is now known as firephoto_
03:46 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: when i got this house everything downstairs was new
03:47 PM XXCoder: as it turns out basement leaks water
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: this wasn't a bow
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: this was like a road or tracks shifted by an earthquake
04:07 PM XXCoder: i didnt say that yours was a bow :) just discribed what happened to house i bought
04:08 PM XXCoder: its a risk when buying house unfortunately
04:08 PM XXCoder: we got house thats basically a lemon
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: heh, my sister bought a new house where they came back and added a 3 ft thick reataining wall to one side of the basement
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: due to a mudslide next door
04:09 PM XXCoder: geez
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: one lawsuit was enough for the builder
04:11 PM XXCoder: we should have sued but whatever
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: is your leak from underground?
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: sewer backups are common in Chicago
04:12 PM XXCoder: yes and no its not sewer and stuff
04:12 PM XXCoder: groundwater unfortately. we put in sump pump and put end to that.
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: they built an underground river in Chicago
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: to help with the frequent floods
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: https://slate.com/business/2019/01/chicagos-deep-tunnel-is-it-the-solution-to-urban-flooding-or-a-cautionary-tale.html
04:17 PM Deejay: gn8
04:17 PM XXCoder: reading
04:19 PM XXCoder: "What do you get when you mix a gallon of sewage and a gallon of rainwater? Two gallons of sewage. "
04:20 PM XXCoder: they encourage water tanks for water from roof etc. its illegal in washington state
04:20 PM XXCoder: dont ask me why
04:22 PM gloops: how about a ditch?
04:23 PM XXCoder: for rainwater? nah current system works fine.
04:23 PM XXCoder: just wish i can use water for yard.
04:23 PM XXCoder: i dont ever use water to water yard.
04:23 PM gloops: usually helps though, so long as theres somewhere for the ditch to drain to
04:24 PM XXCoder: you mean handling rain water from roof?
04:25 PM gloops: no, to drain the land off, say a ditch along the bottom of the garden, takes a lot of flash water and if it can go somehwere will lower the water table
04:26 PM gloops: like any farmers field
04:26 PM XXCoder: ahh got it
04:26 PM XXCoder: land lay its basically impossible
04:27 PM XXCoder: water goes from higher land from neighbor, and space in between is far too small
04:27 PM gloops: yeah thats a problem
04:27 PM XXCoder: fence is maybe 2 feet away from house. regulations is 3 feet, but this house is older than that regulation so grandfathered in
04:27 PM XXCoder: well little more than 2 feet but below 3 feet
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.mobile-home-insurance-houston.com/images/flooded-room.jpg
04:32 PM XXCoder: sucks
05:54 PM _unreal_: Jymmm, I never new there was a memo feature for freenode
05:54 PM _unreal_: SOO tired
05:54 PM jym: Ther eis for most IRC servers
05:54 PM jym: there iss*
05:55 PM * Tom_L gives jym yet another spell checker
05:55 PM jym: I speak typo
05:56 PM XXCoder: careful, could get drunk off smell ;)
05:56 PM Tom_L: it's all good. i fluently read it too
05:57 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, lol
05:58 PM _unreal_: jym, I've heard of that language. I hear its a derivative of sign language with a cast and a broken hand
05:58 PM XXCoder: lol
05:58 PM _unreal_: heh
05:58 PM _unreal_: like that (( :)
05:58 PM _unreal_: ?
06:01 PM _unreal_: wellI'm going to go take a shower
06:01 PM _unreal_: been outside all day
06:01 PM Tom_L: wondered what that odor was
06:01 PM _unreal_: and I'm not ashamed
06:01 PM _unreal_: I earned my stench
06:02 PM _unreal_: mowed the lawn, pressure washed the driveway, and the walk way. and trimmer edged the driveway/sidewalk, trimmed the heges.....
06:02 PM _unreal_: been alday
06:02 PM _unreal_: allday
06:03 PM Tom_L: do the neighors too?
06:03 PM jdh: you could die doing that. Outsource it.
06:03 PM Tom_L: yeah she is pretty hawt
06:04 PM _unreal_: I live in an HOA. we had 6 weeks of rain not long ago....
06:04 PM _unreal_: so every one got a letter. "assholes"
06:04 PM _unreal_: ok I'm taking a shower now
06:05 PM jdh: you should all get together and pay annual fees to have them write you those letters!
06:14 PM Tom_L: andypugh, any preference on which OS to test?
06:15 PM andypugh: Stretch is probably a good start, to make sure that the debs work at all.
06:15 PM Tom_L: if i have preempt installed on it, do i need to start over or can i load RTAI and replace it?
06:15 PM Tom_L: probably best to start over i presume
06:16 PM Tom_L: hunting for my test ssd atm
06:16 PM andypugh: I would also be interested to know if the kernel, at least, works with Buster
06:18 PM Tom_L: i guess i can test without real hardware...
06:21 PM _unreal_: so much cleaner
06:26 PM andypugh: Tom_L: You can certainly install the kernel and RTAI debs without breaking the system, but you would need a different LinuxCNC. If you are running RIP at the moment, then an installed RTAI LinuxCNC won’t interfere
06:41 PM Tom_L: seems a clean path might be best
07:20 PM Loetmichel: *HA!* Finally got the Arctic freezer7 installed on my I7-920. SOOO much quieter than the "temporary" I3 boxed cooler i mounted there over year ago when the old cooler failed. A bit fiddly though, couldnt move the PC out of the corner next to the desk because of things stacked on top... so i had to throw in the cooler thru about 10cm slot at the top. Nevertheless i managed without broken
07:20 PM Loetmichel: fingers... and its SO QUIET now (and a lot colder running) :-)
07:20 PM JT-Mobile: nice
07:23 PM XXCoder: :) wow temp solution actually temp??
07:23 PM XXCoder: ;)
07:24 PM JT-Mobile: hey XXCoder
07:24 PM XXCoder: hey
07:26 PM JT-Mobile: been a long day, rode to Osage Beach on the bike and it's a bit crazy here with the roads
07:28 PM Tom_test: heh
07:29 PM _unreal_: I got tired of doing the over clocking etc...
07:29 PM _unreal_: been running laptops for years at this point
07:29 PM _unreal_: cheaper as well on the old elec bill
07:29 PM _unreal_: but then again I run linux and have not been gaming for years
07:31 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: yes, only lasted a bit more than a year
07:32 PM JT-Mobile: Tom_test: you testing andypugh rtai?
07:32 PM Loetmichel: ... not so bad considering it was only fixed with one bolt because made for a Socket 1150 instead of 1366 ;)
07:34 PM Tom_test: JT-Mobile, just started a stretch test yes
07:34 PM Tom_test: rebooting
07:36 PM andypugh: Tom_test: uname ?
07:37 PM Tom_test: preempt
07:37 PM andypugh: Well, that part works then.
07:37 PM Tom_test: Linux stretch 4.14.132-rtai-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 8 23:47:38 BST 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux
07:39 PM Tom_test: how do i test the rtai module?
07:39 PM Tom_test: just installed that
07:42 PM andypugh: You can try sudo /usr/realtime-4.14.132-rtai-amd64/testsuite/run
07:43 PM andypugh: But if that doesn’t work I wouldn’t be surprised.
07:43 PM andypugh: Is your LinuxCNC install rip or installed?
07:43 PM Tom_test: installed
07:44 PM Tom_test: that scrolls several columns of numbers starting with: RTD| 79| 79| 8388608| 64| 64| 0
07:44 PM andypugh: Yes, I am not convinced that it works, I get the exact same numbers.
07:45 PM Tom_test: at least we're on the same page
07:45 PM andypugh: Install the linuxcnc deb, run the linuxcnc latency test, then you can get back to where you were by picking the preempt-rt kernel in grub and re-installing LinuxCNC uspace in synaptic.
07:46 PM Tom_test: i'm not worried about keeping anything on this pc
07:46 PM andypugh: Or you could stay with RTAI
07:47 PM Tom_test: do i add the linuxcnc deb to the synaptic package manager for install?
07:47 PM Tom_test: local
07:48 PM andypugh: No, you do the exact same thing as for the other debs. (dpkg will actually add them all to synaptic too)
07:48 PM Tom_test: ok i ran the 3 you posted on github
07:49 PM Tom_test: should i remove linuxcnc first?
07:49 PM andypugh: If you run “latency-test” from the command line does it say “Note: running RTAI realtime” ?
07:50 PM andypugh: Hang on, which three?
07:50 PM Tom_test: https://github.com/andypugh/RTAI/releases
07:50 PM Tom_test: under Assets
07:50 PM andypugh: There are 4 mentioned and 9 listed…
07:51 PM Tom_test: i only see 3 debs
07:51 PM Tom_test: unless i'm not looking close enough
07:52 PM Tom_test: insmod: ERROR: could not insert module /usr/realtime-4.14.132-rtai-amd64/modules/rtai_hal.ko: Operation not permitted
07:52 PM andypugh: There are 3 in the no-calibration release.
07:52 PM Tom_test: latency-test
07:53 PM andypugh: Do you see “Assets(11)”
07:53 PM andypugh: That should be 11 files
07:53 PM Tom_test: no
07:54 PM andypugh: Huh?
07:54 PM Tom_test: Assets 5
07:54 PM andypugh: https://github.com/andypugh/RTAI/releases/tag/v5.2.2-master-alpha.1
07:54 PM Tom_test: helps to be in the right place :)
07:55 PM andypugh: https://github.com/andypugh/RTAI/releases has two releases
07:56 PM andypugh: But there isn’t even a LinuxCNC.deb in the other release, so I have no ide where you were looking.
07:57 PM Tom_test: rtai-modules-4.14.132_5.2.2-linuxcnc_amd64.deb
07:59 PM andypugh: Which debs did you install? (full names)
07:59 PM Tom_test: linux-headers-4.14.132-rtai-amd64_4.14.132-rtai-amd64-1_amd64.deb
07:59 PM Tom_test: linux-image-4.14.132-rtai-amd64_4.14.132-rtai-amd64-1_amd64.deb
08:00 PM Tom_test: rtai-modules-4.14.132_5.2.2-linuxcnc_amd64.deb
08:00 PM Tom_test: should i remove those?
08:00 PM andypugh: Maybe. Which release did you find them in?
08:01 PM Tom_test: https://github.com/andypugh/RTAI/releases under Assets
08:01 PM Tom_test: 5 listed
08:02 PM Tom_test: 3 debs
08:03 PM andypugh: Yes, but that had two releases (I just deleted one). There was “no calibration” v5.2.2-no-calibration and “Kernel, RTAI and LinuxCNC install packages for testing” v5.2.2-master-al…
08:03 PM andypugh: Now there should be only one?
08:03 PM Tom_test: i found them under the no-calibration
08:04 PM Tom_test: and now they're gone :)
08:04 PM Tom_test: ok i'll remove and start again
08:04 PM andypugh: You probably should re-install then. Those had the same names but were a bit different.
08:04 PM Tom_test: remove not necessary?
08:05 PM andypugh: And without an RTAI LinuxCNC from the linuxcnc_2.8.0.pre1.4891.gadf1eff73_amd64.deb package the LinuxCNC latency test won’t work.
08:05 PM andypugh: Maybe remove them. Synaptic knows how.
08:10 PM Tom_test: ok starting over..
08:11 PM Tom_test: linux-image-4.14.132..... first?
08:11 PM andypugh: Yes
08:11 PM andypugh: And you might not need the headers.
08:12 PM Tom_test: ok that one requres a reboot?
08:12 PM andypugh: Yes
08:12 PM Tom_test: bye
08:13 PM Tom_L: test pc lacks a box
08:13 PM Tom_L: well of sorts
08:14 PM Tom_L: it's sitting on a cardboard box with the ssd hanging over the edge
08:16 PM Tom_test: Linux stretch 4.14.132-rtai-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 8 23:47:38 BST 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux
08:17 PM Tom_test: rtai-modules-4.14.132_5.2.2-linuxcnc_amd64.deb
08:17 PM Tom_test: next?
08:17 PM andypugh: linuxcnc_2.8.0.pre1.4891.gadf1eff73_amd64.deb
08:18 PM Tom_test: conflicts with uspace
08:18 PM andypugh: Can you force it
08:18 PM andypugh: ?
08:18 PM Tom_test: how?
08:19 PM andypugh: I don’t know.
08:19 PM Tom_test: remember, i'm a rookie at this :)
08:19 PM andypugh: Otherwise, uninstall linuxcnc first?
08:19 PM Tom_test: i was headed there next
08:31 PM Tom_test: must install the rtai module first i guess
09:31 PM Tom_L: ok who's awake here?
09:32 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/Linuxcnc_RTAI_Stretch.png
09:32 PM pink_vampire: me
09:35 PM pink_vampire: Tom_L: what are you showing in that screenshot?
09:35 PM XXCoder: im sooo woooooke
09:35 PM XXCoder: kidding./
09:35 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: whats with it? funally running in system you was trying to make work?
09:36 PM Tom_L: read the file description
09:37 PM Tom_L: stretch _WAS_ preempt-rt only until now
09:37 PM XXCoder: nicel;y done
09:37 PM Tom_L: don't thank me
09:37 PM XXCoder: andy did it or?
09:37 PM Tom_L: andy and the other devs
09:38 PM XXCoder: nice
09:40 PM pink_vampire: Tom_L: what is the G54 R?
09:41 PM Tom_test: where?
09:41 PM pink_vampire: in your screenshot
09:42 PM XXCoder: oh I see it. interesting
09:42 PM pink_vampire: right above TLO X
09:42 PM pink_vampire: maybe rotational axis?
10:06 PM Tom_L: no
10:06 PM Tom_L: A B C are rotational
10:08 PM XXCoder: yeah thats why i was wondering wit r lol
10:08 PM Tom_L: it's likely something new with the definition of joints instead of axis but that's just a guess
10:15 PM Tom_L: R denotes the XY rotation angle around the Z axis. Persistent.
10:15 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gcode/overview.html
10:15 PM Tom_L: now you know
10:17 PM XXCoder: angle and not coord value that'd be C?
10:17 PM Tom_L: C defines the axis
10:17 PM Tom_L: R defines the angle
10:17 PM Tom_L: ?
10:18 PM Tom_L: typically i think C is the Z rotation one isn't it?
10:18 PM XXCoder: polar coord
10:18 PM XXCoder: different system
10:18 PM Tom_L: A is X, B is Y, C is Z?
10:18 PM XXCoder: thats correct
10:18 PM XXCoder: look at section 11 at your link
10:18 PM Tom_L: they're are so many different configurations nowdays though
10:19 PM XXCoder: hmm im not right
10:19 PM XXCoder: its VERY interesting though still. nice way to set bolt patterms!
10:20 PM XXCoder: maybe R relates to spindle angle
10:21 PM Tom_L: an offset plane XY in the Z axis at R angle
10:22 PM XXCoder: hmm
10:22 PM XXCoder: if table is tilted at angle R
10:22 PM Tom_L: sounded good anyway
10:22 PM XXCoder: x and y would be modified llocation. may be the thing
10:23 PM XXCoder: dunno wild guess really
10:48 PM pink_vampire: in my cnc machine C is in degrees
11:09 PM _unreal_: pink_vampire, hello. Where have you been?
11:09 PM _unreal_: pink_vampire, it lives https://drive.google.com/open?id=17bzs0MxvgGTeBPOZkX1hfkQsGf2SuQKO
11:09 PM pink_vampire: here' making some stuff
11:11 PM pink_vampire: this is a nice spindle and a vacuum table
11:11 PM pink_vampire: _unreal_: ^
11:18 PM XXCoder: yayy
11:42 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: whats the latency like with RTAI?
11:42 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: can you test latancy with both modes?
11:43 PM XXCoder: likely he left for bed
11:44 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/
11:44 PM Tom_L: 3 MB
11:45 PM Tom_L: the 'unlabelled' one is a gigabyte i5 setup
11:45 PM XXCoder: dang
11:45 PM XXCoder: yours beat my linuxcnc easily at worst than mine lol
11:46 PM CaptHindsight: ok just looked at the dev channel
11:46 PM XXCoder: 16k something for mine
11:46 PM Tom_L: not much loading on them
11:46 PM Tom_L: just getting it figured out
11:47 PM Tom_L: i did finally run glxgears on the Q1900 and it jumped to around 18k on the RTAI test suite ovl max
11:47 PM CaptHindsight: for us, starting Firefox and playing a youtube video causes the worse latency spikes
11:48 PM Tom_L: well ff, hexchat and filezilla were up
11:48 PM XXCoder: my standard test suite is HD youtube video and 3 glxgears, and I move third glxgears window around constantly
11:48 PM XXCoder: usually fire one as that has constantly changing colors most of area of video. high cpu use
11:49 PM XXCoder: gpu rather but yeah
11:49 PM Tom_L: it's certainly better than preempt-rt on the older boards
11:49 PM CaptHindsight: 9+ glx gears, youtube in FF, VLC playing a movie
11:50 PM CaptHindsight: depending on BIOS, keeping the cores at or near 100% keeps latency lower
11:50 PM CaptHindsight: but sucks the most power
11:50 PM Tom_L: i shut a bunch of stuff off in the gigabyte BIOS
11:50 PM Tom_L: it wouldn't even run before that
11:51 PM XXCoder: killed off everything power saving?
11:51 PM Tom_L: hyperthreading etc
11:51 PM Tom_L: it's in the devel logs
11:52 PM CaptHindsight: we though ti would take much longer to get RTAI going
11:52 PM XXCoder: interesting
11:52 PM CaptHindsight: memleak only spent about 1-2 weeks
11:52 PM Tom_L: andy left thinking it was a failure
11:52 PM CaptHindsight: had to limit some days to only a few hours to prevent burn out
11:53 PM CaptHindsight: hell be up soon to good news
11:53 PM CaptHindsight: he'll
11:54 PM Tom_L: took me a bit because i already had preempt-rt up and working on that pc
11:55 PM Tom_L: had to get rid of a few things first
11:55 PM CaptHindsight: flood all mopped up?
11:55 PM Tom_L: fans are still goin with the dehumidifier
11:55 PM Tom_L: 8 fans
11:55 PM pink_vampire: I'm working on a depth gauge
11:56 PM CaptHindsight: we had a 1 in 100 year flood at our last shop
11:56 PM XXCoder: would you need to rip out floor and walls later or?
11:56 PM CaptHindsight: all concrete, but I had a bunch of boxes on the floor since i was sorting things
11:56 PM Tom_L: picked out carpet today
11:56 PM Tom_L: either way i'm not gonna salvage the old
11:56 PM CaptHindsight: lost $5-10K worth of stuff
