12:27 AM Elmo40: CaptHindsight, is it even possible to use Buster? I thought they removed a lot of backwards compatibility
12:32 AM Elmo40: like no py2.7
12:32 AM Elmo40: the videos about the raspi4 say buster doesnt have firmware for raspi3 or older... or they simply talking shit?
12:32 AM Elmo40: ugh... y-axis layer shift >_<
12:32 AM Elmo40: i need to read the voltage on that thing. might require an adjustment or two.
01:30 AM Deejay: moin
02:03 AM CaptHindsight: Elmo40: ArcEye one th forums says he's been using Buster for nearly a year
02:04 AM CaptHindsight: we have been using Sid here for the past month, but mostly for preempt_rt and RTAI with LCNC...
02:04 AM CaptHindsight: haven't run a machine on Sid yet, will do later this week
02:05 AM CaptHindsight: likely preempt_rt 4.19 or close and 2.8 LCNC with Mesa 6i25 or similar
02:31 AM pingufan: What is SID ?
04:56 AM Tom_L: morning
06:26 AM jthornton: morning
10:19 AM jym: ug ug ug coffee ug
11:09 AM jym: Tom_L: Teh microscope place hasn't answered the phone yet, been trying for a couple of days
11:39 AM mozmck: apparently way too many websites use cloudflare
11:40 AM jym: mozmck how so?
11:41 AM mozmck: https://twitter.com/hashtag/Cloudflare?src=hash
11:43 AM mozmck: I'm assuming the sites I'm having trouble getting to are using cloudflare - but that may not be true I guess.
11:44 AM jym: mozmck Find better quality pr0n sites? lol
11:45 AM mozmck: I don't do those. Seems like everything is slow right now. Can't load google, duckduckgo, bing, and other sites. phoronix loaded, and some others.
11:53 AM Tom_L: nobody ever complains about it being too fast
11:56 AM Tom_L: jym just send cash, maybe they'll talk then
11:57 AM jym: Tom_L: MAybe, more concerned afte the sale...
12:02 PM syyl: use the cloud they said.
12:02 PM syyl: it will be great, they said.
12:02 PM syyl: thats almost like trusting a cloud based cad ;)
12:03 PM * jym snickers
12:09 PM x2s: .oO( but but but, without the cloud we couldn't watch the NYPDs body cam footage! )
12:10 PM Tom_L: jym, https://www.ebay.com/itm/AmScope-SM-3T-7X-45X-Trinocular-Stereo-Zoom-Microscope-on-Single-Arm-Boom-Stand/190807585070?epid=10011374527&hash=item2c6d04b12e:g:5AkAAOSwhu9cFMoF
12:11 PM Tom_L: just use a flashlight instead of the ring light :)
12:58 PM miss0r: syyl: any news on your edm?
01:37 PM jym: You know, it's not easy putting a 90 deg spine on the back of a knife
01:39 PM jym: a flat file is just skating
01:39 PM miss0r: I guess that is what you have a mill for :)
01:44 PM jym: No mill, router
01:44 PM miss0r: too tough material for your router?
01:45 PM jym: Trying to get a clean finish, just doing it by hand
01:45 PM miss0r: hmm.. you could always stone it?
01:46 PM jym: Tried a 120grit stone so far, I think I heard the knife chuckling
01:46 PM miss0r: lol
01:47 PM miss0r: i'm thinking a 'wet stone'. The same kind you would use to sharpen a knife with
01:47 PM jym: I am, 8" long
01:48 PM syyl: not buying it, miss0r
01:48 PM syyl: decided against it
01:48 PM miss0r: why? are you afraid it would just sit around to collect dust like mine? :D
01:53 PM miss0r: syyl: I'll cut you a good deal for mine? :D
01:53 PM syyl: yep :D
01:53 PM syyl: next year will probably be time for a new cnc mill
01:53 PM syyl: something with small workenvelope that can do hardmilling
01:53 PM miss0r: I thought you preferred a manual mill
01:54 PM syyl: for some things sure
01:54 PM syyl: but from a buisnessstandpoint cnc is common sense ;)
01:54 PM miss0r: I was ->||<- THIS CLOSE to get a great deal on a mint deckel FP1
01:54 PM miss0r: indeed
01:55 PM syyl: https://www.cnc-technik-mueller.de/fs4mg-mineralgussmaschine/
01:55 PM syyl: probably this bugger
01:55 PM syyl: polymerconcrete frame, fixed gantry
01:55 PM miss0r: then some !!@$FF! machine reseller spotted it and outbid me in a jiffy
01:55 PM miss0r: Yeah, I've watched his projects on youtube
01:55 PM miss0r: looks decent
01:57 PM miss0r: I'm at a crossroad here.
01:57 PM miss0r: I'm thinking of retiering the maho. *but* I've build a rather expensive controller for it, and I don't have the time to install it and program it
01:58 PM miss0r: I need something with more memory & an ATC... the jobs I take in are increasingly demanding
02:01 PM net|: whats best way to get pressed in bolts out heat and air impact ?
02:01 PM jym: grinder and cutoff wheels
02:02 PM net|: grind it down then drill it out ?
02:03 PM jym: When I had to remove the pressed in studs on my casters, drilling was kinda useless for me, I just used an angle grinder and cut away as much as possible
02:48 PM gloops: hammer
02:49 PM andypugh: Just reminded me of a phrase I saw recently: “When your only tool is C++, every problem looks like a thumb”
02:50 PM gloops: ive had a 'hammer finger' (bent and wouldnt go back for years) i wouldnt like a hammer thumb...
02:50 PM jym: thumb?
02:51 PM jym: c++ ins't THAT bad
02:51 PM FinboySlick: Slightly worse than C ;)
02:51 PM jym: beats assembly
02:52 PM andypugh: Oh god. Back in the day, assembly on a Sinclair spectrum.
02:52 PM andypugh: Load assembler from tape (5 mins)
02:52 PM andypugh: Load source code from tape (2 mins)
02:52 PM andypugh: edit - compile
02:52 PM jym: andypugh: cradek has an altair (?) with physical toggle switches
02:52 PM andypugh: save object code to tape (1 min)
02:53 PM andypugh: reset
02:53 PM andypugh: load object code
02:53 PM FinboySlick: I always enjoyed assembly. Zackatronics games all involve writing assembler-like programs to solve puzzles.
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: toggle switches! We used to wish for toggle switches
02:53 PM andypugh: load game data (15 minutes)
02:53 PM andypugh: run
02:53 PM andypugh: crash.
02:53 PM andypugh: repeat
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: we had to wait for the tubes and relays to warm up after hand cranking the generator
02:54 PM andypugh: At least his Altair has single step and debuggling LEDs.
02:54 PM andypugh: With the spectrum you were flying blind.
03:08 PM sync: fun andypugh :)
03:19 PM jym: Does anyone have a clue what they used to use to have a wood stove in a canvas tent way back when? fiberglass? asbestoes?
03:20 PM sync: sometimes just a hole
03:20 PM sync: I guess asbestos would have worked well
03:20 PM jym: and a tent on fire?
03:21 PM sync: no, that usually works out fine
03:24 PM Deejay: gn8
03:25 PM pcw_mesa: CaptHindsight: Hey I remember loading a hand assembled sieve of Eratosthenes program into a PDP8S via the front panel switches, does that make me old?
03:27 PM pcw_mesa: at least it had core memory so it did not forget when you turned it off...
03:28 PM pcw_mesa: cla cll tad...
03:30 PM methods_: pushes the ventilator closer to pcw_mesa
03:30 PM pcw_mesa: :-)
03:32 PM methods_: https://mymodernmet.com/scrap-metal-sculpture-insects-by-edouard-martinet/
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: not a big football (soccer) fan but watching the USA vs England game now
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: watching any world class team or individual sport in the finals is usually interesting
03:41 PM roycroft: the us women's football team kick butt, and have for a long time
03:41 PM CaptHindsight: we used to have to wait for the sandstorms to subside so we could continue our computations in the dunes with driftwood sticks
03:42 PM roycroft: i enjoy watching them
03:42 PM roycroft: unfortunately i'm busy debugging sendmail rulesets right now
03:42 PM roycroft: and as soon as i'm done with that i'm off to do booth construction at the country fair
03:42 PM roycroft: no time for television today
03:43 PM jym: roycroft: why are you mucking with sendmail in this day and age?
03:43 PM roycroft: because it's still the most capable and flexible mta around
03:43 PM roycroft: and i've been using it for nigh on 30 years, so i know it pretty darn well
03:45 PM jym: roycroft: Postfix?
03:46 PM roycroft: there are, or at least were, license issues with postfix
03:46 PM jym: roycroft: ah. Are you doing spam rules?
03:46 PM roycroft: the license has been changed, but the version that ships with debian sitll has the old, unacceptable license
03:46 PM roycroft: i'm doing some custom header rewriting at the moment
03:46 PM roycroft: we use a third-party anti-spam service that handles most of the spam
03:46 PM jym: roycroft: Oh, YOUR doing the spam ;)
03:47 PM roycroft: i have a very weird problem
03:47 PM roycroft: i have a domain, domain.com
03:47 PM roycroft: its email is hosted on mail.relaydomain.com
03:47 PM roycroft: i have another machine, domain.com
03:47 PM roycroft: note that the ip for domain.com points to this other machine
03:48 PM roycroft: the mx for domain.com points to the anti-spam service, who deliver to mail.relaydomain.com
03:48 PM roycroft: when i send mail from domain.com to user@domain.com the recipient gets rewritten as user@mail.relaydomain.com
03:49 PM roycroft: when i send mail from domain.com to user@otherdomain.com, which is hosted on mail.relaydomain.com as well, the recipient headers do not get rewritten
03:49 PM roycroft: and i'm trying to sort out why that's happening
03:49 PM roycroft: i want the headers not to be rewritten
03:50 PM jym: Sounds like replay is rewriting the headers when it could very well be MX=50 as example
03:50 PM jym: replay*
03:50 PM roycroft: mail.relaydomain.com is indeed the one that is rewriting the headers
03:50 PM jym: roycroft: is it actually storing the mail, or just forwarding?
03:51 PM roycroft: and i should add that i was relaying my mail through mail.relaydomain.com
03:51 PM roycroft: it's delivering it to the correct recipient, but with the headers rewritten
03:51 PM roycroft: and when i'm on mail.relaydomain.com itself and send mail to user@domain.com, it also rewrites the headers
03:51 PM jym: It should be just store and forward to the destination MTA
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: how much extra do you have to pay to have them not do that?
03:51 PM roycroft: the destination mta is localhost
03:52 PM roycroft: mail.relaydomain.com is a mail server that hosts email for domain.com, and hundreds of other domains
03:53 PM roycroft: so the behavior is that local mail gets rewritten, but for this one domain only (and it's not the primary doman for mail.relaydomain.com)
03:53 PM roycroft: mail forwared through the internet at large to the mx handler, which is the anti-spam service, and then handed over to mail.relaydomain.com, does not get rewritten
03:53 PM roycroft: very strange
03:55 PM roycroft: and domain.com is connecting to mail.relaydomain.com on the mta port, the same as the anti-spam service, not on an msa port
03:55 PM roycroft: one would think the behavior would be the same
03:55 PM roycroft: but apparently not
04:03 PM jym: roycroft: maybe contact the antirelay service and ask what they are doing?
04:08 PM jym: https://image.sportsmansguide.com/adimgs/l/6/648081i6_ts.jpg
04:08 PM jym: I guess those are called "stove jacks"
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: looks like a pipe and a leaky tent
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: asbestos tent panel
04:10 PM XXCoder: abestos is so healthy
04:10 PM jym: there is silione fiberglass
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: perfectly safe as long as it stays put
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: silanes and silica the silent killers
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: slate tent roof panel
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: 100% natural
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: fireproof to 4000 degress
04:12 PM CaptHindsight: recycle into arrow heads
04:14 PM jym: https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-10908A-Fiberglass-Welding-Grommets/dp/B0057RJD0E/
04:16 PM jym: I just can't figure out how to reinforce the hile
04:17 PM jym: hole*
04:27 PM JT-Shop: just plugged the OBD II scanner and it says random misfires... no $hit
04:28 PM jym: JT-Shop: no codes?
04:28 PM JT-Shop: yea, I need to write them down
04:31 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:31 PM cradek: that means they're spread across cylinders - it's helpful to know that
04:32 PM jym: I had two coil packs go out at once.
04:32 PM cradek: alien microwave beam attack
04:34 PM sync: oh wow andypugh, the renault dci90 is an air pump
04:35 PM sync: and that dual clutch they have is even worse
04:35 PM andypugh: The clue is in the word “Renault”
04:35 PM sync: shudders all the time when it does something
04:35 PM sync: yes
04:36 PM sync: the opel equivalent was not better
04:36 PM sync: and they all did the same strange thing that they have quite strong accel from a standstill
04:37 PM sync: probably to lower clutch wear and get in a better operating point
04:37 PM sync: oh, lel
04:38 PM sync: only 220Nm
04:39 PM JT-Shop: P0300, P0327, P0332, P0446
04:39 PM sync: and for whatever reason they don't give you that nice diesel torque jerk when the turbo comes alive
04:42 PM jym: knock sensor bank 1 and 2
04:43 PM JT-Shop: yea that's been on for a while I think the mechanics did a poor splice, need to pull the intake manifold off to fix that
04:43 PM JT-Shop: orig a wood rat ate the wires and stuffed it full of acorns
04:43 PM jym: electrical splice?
04:43 PM jym: ah
04:43 PM jym: P0446 OBD-II Trouble Code: Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction
04:43 PM JT-Shop: yea it was fixed for a while and came back on
04:43 PM jym: plastic water bottle #57 hole, 2 moth balls
04:45 PM jym: I'm sorry, but I just don't get how ppl can fuckup a wire splice?
04:45 PM sync: they are idiots
04:45 PM JT-Shop: could have been another rat too, won't know till I take the intake off
04:45 PM jym: ouch
04:46 PM jym: why do you have to remove the intake to check for wires?
04:46 PM JT-Shop: I wonder where the vent valve is on my truck?
04:46 PM jym: google knows or youtube
04:46 PM JT-Shop: the knock sensor is in each bank of cylinders on top which is under the intake manifold
04:47 PM jym: ah
04:47 PM JT-Shop: I know what it looks like now lol
04:47 PM jym: what year make model
04:47 PM sync: what you need is https://twitter.com/_Sync___/status/1050842877344055302
04:47 PM JT-Shop: 02 z71 4 wheel drive
04:49 PM * JT-Shop goes to nose around the truck and see if it sticks out
04:55 PM Bushman: i have a question to all of you who have touch probe in their CNC...
04:55 PM Bushman: what is the repeatibility of your probe?
04:58 PM jym: JT-Shop: the evap cylenoid is next to the charcoal canister, which is near the tank
05:06 PM perry_j1987: i got sucked into watching a bunch of paramotor videos on youtube
05:06 PM perry_j1987: that sure looks like alot of fun
05:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:11 PM Bushman: perry_j1987: let me guess...
05:12 PM Bushman: Tucker Gott
05:13 PM JT-Shop: yuck under the truck... ok I'll go look for it
05:17 PM andypugh: perry_j1987: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soxxPyaAT1k
05:22 PM jym: JT-Shop: the video I watched shows it get stuck, and someone beat on it with a short baseball bat, lol
05:22 PM JT-Shop: I assume it's on top of the tank?
05:23 PM Tom_itx: of course... what other convenient spot could they put it?
05:23 PM jym: LEt me post a pic
05:23 PM jym: no not on top of tank
05:24 PM jym: https://i.imgur.com/BHpMF9D.png
05:25 PM perry_j1987: nope not that crazy guy lol
05:26 PM perry_j1987: Bushman ya some of the vids were tucker gott
05:28 PM JT-Shop: Bushman: it depends on the quality of the probe, the machine
05:28 PM JT-Shop: you made your's IIRC
05:29 PM JT-Shop: and how well it's centered to the spindle if your using one in the spindle
05:31 PM andypugh: Bushman: It’s good when centred.
05:32 PM andypugh: I someimes need to re-centre by probing an edge (always in the same direction) with the spindle in 4 different orientations.
05:32 PM andypugh: (And adjusting the screws until all the numbers come out the same)
05:33 PM andypugh: Bushman: What probe do you have?
05:33 PM JT-Shop: I have to do the same with mine
05:33 PM JT-Shop: I think he made his IIRC
05:38 PM JT-Shop: jym: this does not look OEM, it might be a good place to start looking for P0446 https://imagebin.ca/v/4mepE0jCmshe
05:42 PM jym: JT-Shop: oh geeeze
05:46 PM JT-Shop: it was rubbing on the frame... so I saw some bare wire.
05:46 PM JT-Shop: the good news is the tank is only 1/4 full
05:53 PM JT-Shop: jym: I put a new fill valve on the 500 gallon tank last winter... dunno why I waited till it was 90°F to equalize the vapor pressure to the 300 gallon tank... it was 140psig
05:54 PM JT-Shop: took 5% of the 300 gallon tank to get the vapor pressure up on the 500 gallon tank
05:55 PM JT-Shop: by the time I was done the 300 gallon tank had cooled down to 120 psig from the flow of propane
05:57 PM andypugh: I nearly bought a Pi4 today, but then realsied that the place with stock was out of stock of micro-HDMI connectors.
06:10 PM JT-Shop: what memory did they have in stock?
06:12 PM andypugh: 4GB
06:12 PM JT-Shop: nice, I only found 2GB over here but didn't look very long or hard
06:13 PM andypugh: https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b?variant=20064052740158
06:13 PM jym: JT-Shop: did that resolve the issue?
06:13 PM JT-Shop: did what resolve the issue?
06:14 PM jym: euqilze the pressure
06:15 PM jym: nm out of it today
06:16 PM JT-Shop: there was no issue other than when they come to fill the tank if it has pressure they don't think about it... if it's empty some squirm and want to do a leak test which takes a while
06:17 PM JT-Shop: so it's less of an issue after I fix something like replace the fill valve to just give it vapor pressure
06:17 PM JT-Shop: time to get them filled anyhow
06:18 PM jym: isn't the automatic switch over valve suppose to resolve that?
06:18 PM JT-Shop: what automatic switch over valve?
06:19 PM JT-Shop: I'm the tank switcher and no the regulators don't allow reverse flow
06:21 PM jym: ah, heh
06:24 PM jym: Never had them do a leak test, just refuse to fill if too hot
06:25 PM JT-Shop: here they just fill to 60% or 70% I forget when it's hot, in the winter they will fill to 80%
06:26 PM jym: JT-Shop: You have a bit of scrap steel tubing and plate dont' you?
06:26 PM JT-Shop: of course, why
06:26 PM JT-Shop: I'm a fabricator... among other things
06:27 PM jym: JT-Shop: And you know what a rocket stove is, either L or J shaped...
06:28 PM jym: Was thinking of making a pellete rocket stove, with a zig zag pattern of tubing to absorb most of the heat before it get exhausted. Burn hot and fast using very little fuel.
06:28 PM JT-Shop: aye
06:29 PM jym: so basically the exhaust temp as it hits the roofline is around 140F or so, not 700F
06:29 PM jym: gravity fed
06:30 PM jym: It's not gonnga heat a room fast, but will maintain temp
06:32 PM jym: the extra plate is just thermal conductors, cause well alum is expensive =)
06:32 PM Tom_itx: not too bad in these parts
06:33 PM jym: Tom_itx: for a pellete stove
06:33 PM Tom_itx: how thick?
06:34 PM jym: whatever you have on hand
06:34 PM Tom_itx: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/local_stock/stock_index.php
06:34 PM jym: I suppose you could use vertical steel tubings too
06:36 PM Tom_itx: is L better than J?
06:37 PM JT-Shop: air is a poor thermal conductor with steel... now copper or aluminum fins they rock
06:38 PM Tom_itx: got a pretty good chunk of heatsink left i could use
06:38 PM jym: Tom_itx: I've never tested J, but I've seen it used on thermal mass stoves
06:39 PM Tom_itx: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/psu/heatsink_bulk.jpg
06:39 PM Tom_itx: probably about 4' of that left
06:39 PM Tom_itx: and a smaller chunk
06:39 PM Tom_itx: maybe 20"
06:39 PM jym: JT-Shop: I was thinking the vetical tubes when begin drawing up cold air upwards
06:39 PM jym: would*
06:40 PM JT-Shop: that's a pretty big chunk of head sink
06:41 PM jym: BAsically the whole idea is to suck as much heat out before it hits the roof, so go from 1200F to 120F roughly
06:42 PM Tom_itx: JT-Shop it was just laying in the scrap yard one day
06:42 PM Tom_itx: i grabbed it up pretty quick
06:43 PM jym: Tom_itx: you cna organize your pokemon card collection now on it
06:43 PM Tom_itx: scrabble
06:50 PM CaptHindsight: 90f and rain
06:53 PM Tom_itx: funny you mentioned it. just heard thunder outside
06:53 PM Tom_itx: it was sunny when i got here
06:56 PM CaptHindsight: 76f and raining harder
06:57 PM CaptHindsight: I can't imagine trying to machine anything with precision in a 30C (90f)+ shop
06:57 PM Centurion_Dan: Hi. Has anybody used an LS3776R 32bit encoder/counter based interface with linuxcnc?
06:59 PM CaptHindsight: what is a LS3776r?
07:00 PM CaptHindsight: Centurion_Dan: ^^
07:04 PM Centurion_Dan: it's a chip that encodes quadrature signal and provides a position counter via spi
07:05 PM Centurion_Dan: CaptHindsight: It would remove the need to check the linear encoder A+B outputs at a very high frequency.
07:09 PM CaptHindsight: is that a good part number?
07:10 PM CaptHindsight: it's like asking "will this voltage regulator work with LCNC"
07:18 PM jthornton: of course it will... but you might have to bit of work...
07:22 PM Centurion_Dan: https://lsicsi.com/datasheets/LS7366R.pdf
07:23 PM Centurion_Dan: there are a few arduino shields with 2x, 3x and 6x chips available
07:46 PM CaptHindsight: ah LS7366R vs LS3776R
07:46 PM CaptHindsight: the characters and their order do matter when discussing a part number
08:29 PM roycroft: i'm almost done with booth construction
08:29 PM roycroft: another couple hours on friday and it should be ready to go
08:30 PM roycroft: which is good, because saturday the tipi goes up, and next week is the fair
