01:11 AM Centurion-Dan2 is now known as Centurion_Dan
03:02 AM Loetmichel: *GNAAAAH* searched for an error with two HP MFP laserjets... shielded them, everything works but the ADF of the scanner: pulls half a page in then "paper jam"... took me 6 hors yesterday to get a theory: that adf uses a brushed motor and an optical encoder to position the paper... seems the Ferrite i put on the FFC acts as a transformer and copples enough of the DC motors PWM to the Encoder
03:02 AM Loetmichel: inputs that it has ghost steps... Will now verify with an osciklloscope if that is... its SO annoying to have a fault you know you are responsible for but have no idea how it happened for hours.
03:26 AM selroc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAdqazixuRY
05:52 AM jthornton: morning
05:52 AM XXCoder: hey
05:59 AM Tom_L: morning
06:01 AM miss0r: hi
08:10 AM perry_j1987: morning
08:13 AM Loetmichel: *eureka!* found the culprit that prevented the Scanner-ADF from working: one of the 100nF caps the boss soldered to the chassis from the motor pins had a short (to much strain on the legs) -> one motor pin shorted to the chassis: strange "noise" on the encoder signals. NEver would have suspected it until i measured for ohms because of the "ZERO noise from one leg to gnd" on the scope ;)
08:37 AM SpeedEvil: This electronics shit is hard.
08:38 AM gloops: wiring a machine up SpeedEvil?
08:38 AM SpeedEvil: I was referring to Loetmichel's comment
08:38 AM gloops: ahh, didnt see it
08:38 AM SpeedEvil: <Loetmichel> *eureka!* found the culprit that prevented the Scanner-ADF from working: one of the 100nF caps the boss soldered to the chassis from the motor pins had a short (to much strain on the legs) -> one motor pin shorted to the chassis: strange "noise" on the encoder signals. NEver would have suspected it until i measured for ohms because of the "ZERO noise from one leg to gnd" on the scope ;)
08:39 AM gloops: lol, yeah dont think i would have found that
08:39 AM * SpeedEvil is currently trying to design a gearbox.
08:40 AM JT-Shop: note to self: don't put Physan 20 in the coolant tank again
08:41 AM SpeedEvil: Cheap belt driven, with gear selection by pressing belts against pulleys while electronically meshing them and lock by engaging two gears at once.
08:42 AM SpeedEvil: ~kilowatt in, ~60/6 RPM out.
08:43 AM gloops: sounds tricky
08:44 AM gloops: ive been faffing about with box designs https://ibb.co/KLm8cDx
08:47 AM Loetmichel: SpeedEvil: hihi, not THAT hard
08:47 AM Loetmichel: its just annoying when you cant imagine why those encloder lines see "ghost steps" when you did nothing on the encoder
08:48 AM Loetmichel: took me a while to notice that the ground was "moving" because of the short
08:48 AM SpeedEvil: That's what i mean - when your reasonable assumptions turn out broken, and you need to chase weird faults.
08:49 AM SpeedEvil: Especially if you don't have the test gear.
08:49 AM Loetmichel: would have probably been deadly for the motor drivers if the ground wouldnt have also been a 0,3mm wide FFC trace ;)
08:50 AM Loetmichel: the "short circuit tester" didnt even beep when i tested the AFV motor lines to ground on the formatter end
08:51 AM Loetmichel: thanks to the resitance of nearly a foot of 0,5mm pitch flat foil cable
08:51 AM Loetmichel: (that stuff is the nightmare of every RF tech btw!)
08:51 AM Loetmichel: (act like the perfect antenna to distribute all kinds of accidentally signals)
08:52 AM Loetmichel: s/AVF/ADF
08:54 AM perry_j1987: so the tool table in linuxcnc is used when gcode has g41 /g42 in it?
09:08 AM JT-Shop: depends http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/gcode/g-code.html#gcode:g41-g42
09:09 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop what did it do to the tank?
09:17 AM JT-Shop: foam like crazy lol
09:17 AM Tom_L: fun
09:17 AM Tom_L: what do you use that in? the plasma?
09:18 AM Tom_L: never heard of it
09:18 AM Tom_L: or never heard of it used in a coolant tank
09:22 AM JT-Shop: yea that is part of what I use in the plasma
09:23 AM Tom_L: are you on well water?
09:23 AM Tom_L: how hard is it on equipment?
09:34 AM perry_j1987: i just ended up using negative stock to leave
09:34 AM perry_j1987: to tune in the hole size
09:35 AM perry_j1987: got a hole now to the size that i wanted it to be heh
09:35 AM JT-Shop: yea, it's hard water but I use water from the house for the mill and lathe that has been through the softener
09:38 AM Tom_L: perry_j1987 what did you end up doing?
10:02 AM Loetmichel: *MUHAHA* just went out with the coworkers for a smoke... discussion about which 3d program they use: coworker1: "blender" 2:"F360" the third: "3dmax" the fourth: "freecad" $me:"MoI" ... THAT will be "fun" when the new boss wants to decide which one we all have to use in the future ;)
10:03 AM SpeedEvil: And the bosses choice: Sketchup
10:03 AM Loetmichel: SpeedEvil: probably ;)
10:08 AM perry_j1987: in fusion360 there is a stock to leave option
10:09 AM perry_j1987: Tom_L i just put a negative amount for the amount i needed to bring the hole to size heh
10:46 AM Tom_L: something is fishy about f360 on that then
10:46 AM Tom_L: what units are you using in the model?
10:47 AM perry_j1987: all metric
10:47 AM Tom_L: what about the tool description?
10:48 AM perry_j1987: metric as well
10:48 AM perry_j1987: put mic on the tool and measures 3.08
10:48 AM perry_j1987: which is what i put in fusion360
10:48 AM perry_j1987: but putting a -.3 brought the holes to the right size
10:48 AM perry_j1987: in the stock to leave
10:49 AM Tom_L: and you were originally off by .4mm?
10:51 AM perry_j1987: 6mm hole was giving 5.4
10:52 AM Tom_L: so .6 off
10:52 AM perry_j1987: aye
10:52 AM Tom_L: something is off in fusion
10:53 AM perry_j1987: thats why i was wanting to figure out how to verify the gcode it was outputting if it calculated out to producing a 6mm hole or 5.4
10:53 AM perry_j1987: tinkered around a bit trying to sketch the coordinates from the gcode but nothing was making sense to me lol
10:53 AM Tom_L: i posted a helix on my site for you at xy 0
10:53 AM Tom_L: for a 6mm hole
10:54 AM Tom_L: with a .125 cutter
11:07 AM jym: Alright, the next time you guy want cast iron... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7nqBgklf9E
11:07 AM Tom_L: you posted that already
11:07 AM Tom_L: and no i don't want it that bad
11:07 AM jym: Tom_L: oh come on, you know you do
11:07 AM Tom_L: kudos for his effort
11:08 AM Tom_L: why did he knock the first one down anyway?
11:09 AM jym: I"m not sure, the new one looked more like a rocket stove design to me
11:11 AM Deejay: hi
11:11 AM jym: Hey Deejay
11:17 AM Deejay: hey gym ;-)
11:27 AM jym: FSCK ME.... firefox gets almost daily anymore
11:28 AM * Deejay runs the file system check (fsck) on jym
11:28 AM jym: lol
11:28 AM Deejay: fsck is the command for file system check on linux...
11:29 AM Deejay: at least on my ubuntu
11:29 AM jym: Ok, PHUK ME... firefox gets...
11:29 AM Deejay: hrhr
11:29 AM CaptHindsight: jym: you'd think that he'd work out making some boots first before a refractory oven
11:30 AM jym: CaptHindsight: at least gloves would be good
11:31 AM CaptHindsight: jym: likely next on his list after its first use :)
11:31 AM CaptHindsight: step 23: scoop the molten iron out of the crucible....
11:32 AM CaptHindsight: oh darn!
11:32 AM jym: CaptHindsight: His use of wood ash to make cement was interesting, he went intot he chemistry behind it too inthe description
11:33 AM CaptHindsight: well he didn't have many other options being in the jungle and all
11:33 AM jym: CaptHindsight: I mean more in the progress of "man and fire"
11:34 AM CaptHindsight: I wonder if he has any other videos making use of "found" yeast, fungus and urea?
11:34 AM CaptHindsight: use what you have
11:34 AM Tom_L: jungle bread?
11:35 AM CaptHindsight: chief exports of the human body
11:36 AM CaptHindsight: Howto use your large intestine as a incubator in the jungle.
11:37 AM jym: He made starch flour and a fucnky bread thingy, he needs to get/find salt I think
11:37 AM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/kZJw_wrCkXA
11:37 AM CaptHindsight: DUNG Technology in Cambodia
11:38 AM CaptHindsight: jym: he could reduce his perspiration to obtain that
11:39 AM * jym is restoring a dutch oven that went thru the wildfire
11:39 AM CaptHindsight: jym: have a pic of its condition after the fire?
11:40 AM gregcnc: perry_j1987 no luck on sorting the problem? The code was good, it's not a F360 issue.
11:40 AM CaptHindsight: where's fragalot when you need him? :)
11:40 AM jym: CaptHindsight: uploading
11:42 AM CaptHindsight: maybe it's time for perry_j1987 to post all of his config files
11:43 AM jym: CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/Ch0fx1e.jpg
11:43 AM Tom_L: capn, i think it's something in f360 since he cut a square with the same tool and it came out to size
11:43 AM gregcnc: somethign is up. He milled a 100mm square (not sure if internal or external) and it measured good. Helical holes are undersize.
11:43 AM gregcnc: he posted code and it was good
11:43 AM gregcnc: for the helical hole
11:44 AM perry_j1987: ya im at a loss for it heh
11:44 AM perry_j1987: but this is a workable workaround atm
11:45 AM Tom_L: i uninstalled f360 or i might try it
11:46 AM CaptHindsight: was going to order steel and aluminum plate today but found the materials in my stock today!!
11:46 AM gregcnc: again, not the code
11:47 AM Tom_L: gregcnc is the code programmed to the tool edge or center?
11:47 AM gregcnc: center
11:47 AM Tom_L: it looked different than what i posted
11:47 AM Tom_L: i'm not sure he posted his test hole code
11:47 AM gregcnc: he did
11:47 AM Tom_L: maybe i missed that
11:48 AM CaptHindsight: intermittent use of some comp setting?
11:49 AM gregcnc: https://pastebin.com/raw/DQegUzQa
11:49 AM CaptHindsight: are all helical holes using that same tool off by the same amount?
11:50 AM gregcnc: i'd guess it's a mechanical problem with the 6040. screws, nuts, bearings,...etc
11:50 AM Tom_L: yeah it looks pretty close to mine
11:50 AM CaptHindsight: put a pen in the spindle and start drawing things
11:51 AM CaptHindsight: how are the ball screws fixed in his 6040?
11:51 AM perry_j1987: i should sell off some of my toys and buy a mini mill
11:51 AM Tom_L: not sure why he's using G18
11:51 AM gregcnc: that's from fusion
11:51 AM gregcnc: not a problem
11:52 AM perry_j1987: fusion360 with vanilla linuxcnc post processor
11:52 AM CaptHindsight: I've seen some that had floating floating for fixity
11:52 AM Tom_L: perry_j1987 it's more fun to fix what ya got
11:53 AM perry_j1987: well ya but my interests are more metal-centric these days than sheet goods that i got the 6040 for in the first place
11:53 AM gregcnc: it's more fun to have more expensive problems
11:54 AM Tom_L: is the fusion post pretty decent for lcnc?
11:54 AM gregcnc: I'm pretty sure it works
11:57 AM Tom_L: is G94 defalut?
11:57 AM Tom_L: i never specify it on the mill
11:58 AM gregcnc: probably, but you should have a catchall header
11:58 AM Tom_L: so then it looks for G20 21 for the units
12:01 PM CaptHindsight: G54 It is an error if:
12:01 PM CaptHindsight: selecting a coordinate system is used while cutter compensation is on.
12:02 PM CaptHindsight: G94 is not used in that program
12:03 PM Tom_L: it is
12:03 PM Tom_L: at the top
12:03 PM gregcnc: G94 is Feed/min
12:03 PM Tom_L: i know but i never use it since it must be default
12:03 PM CaptHindsight: It is an error if: A new feed rate is not specified after switching to G94 or G95
12:03 PM gregcnc: he's not gettign errors
12:04 PM gregcnc: it's just not cutting to size
12:04 PM CaptHindsight: except for the actual cuts :)
12:05 PM gregcnc: I missed F1000. yesterday. The machine probably never gets going that fast, but that's silly for a 1.4mm helix
12:07 PM gregcnc: just plain steppers or something else?
12:07 PM Tom_L: mine tends to be on the slow side due to my spindle
12:07 PM Tom_L: idk
12:07 PM Tom_L: i'd guess steppers
12:08 PM CaptHindsight: was his feed rate the same for the cut squares?
12:09 PM CaptHindsight: yeah time to check his limit settings
12:10 PM CaptHindsight: often people leave those at some high setting when they are testing to not get in the way
12:12 PM gregcnc: the default setting G64 in Linuxcnc is probably causing this
12:13 PM Tom_L: if that be true wouldn't i have problems with it too?
12:13 PM Tom_L: i'm not using G64
12:14 PM gregcnc: There was a YT video of a lathe with low feed rates and this turned out to be the problem. i was a surprised at how much it rounded corners at 400.mm/min
12:14 PM gregcnc: sure you are
12:14 PM gregcnc: if your'e feeds are lower, you get less blending
12:14 PM Tom_L: i don't specify it is what i meant
12:14 PM Tom_L: yeah i get what you're saying now
12:14 PM Tom_L: his feed is rather high
12:15 PM Tom_L: worth a try for sure
12:15 PM gregcnc: it will solve this
12:15 PM Tom_L: what should he set G64 to?
12:15 PM gregcnc: something that gives the results he wants
12:15 PM Tom_L: or slow the feed down
12:16 PM gregcnc: perry_j1987 http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/gcode/g-code.html#gcode:g64
12:16 PM gregcnc: the feed is excessive by a mile as well
12:16 PM Tom_L: i don't generally program metric. what would a good feed for that be?
12:16 PM Tom_L: ~2-300 mm/min?
12:17 PM gregcnc: it needs correction for small radius
12:20 PM CaptHindsight: try the same program only 50x slower
12:20 PM perry_j1987: aye i've tried down to 100
12:20 PM perry_j1987: same exact size hole
12:22 PM gregcnc: hmmm
12:22 PM Tom_L: G64 P-.01 or .001?
12:23 PM gregcnc: yeah I would try P.01 to start
12:25 PM Tom_L: if he slowed it down with the same result that may not be it
12:25 PM gregcnc: with open tolerance on G64 hard to say, really depends on acceleration
12:26 PM Tom_L: i suppose. i've got mine set pretty mild
12:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.alro.com/locations/Location.aspx?loc=EZ an outlet nearby
12:29 PM gregcnc: that's pretty cool
12:33 PM perry_j1987: what should my acceleration be set to
12:34 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: they list the sizes of their drops
12:34 PM CaptHindsight: and location
12:38 PM gregcnc: if they listed all drops by location that would be useful
12:43 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: they do but you have to pick your H x W first and material
12:44 PM gregcnc: is pricing OK?
12:44 PM CaptHindsight: drop prices are ~/12 the cut to order prices
12:44 PM perry_j1987: i just looked at couple things
12:44 PM CaptHindsight: 1/2
12:44 PM perry_j1987: double the price on some of these drops vs what i could get other places
12:45 PM CaptHindsight: yes, some suppliers only charge $1-2/lb for drops
12:45 PM CaptHindsight: i am looking at flat ground tool steels
12:45 PM CaptHindsight: so quite a bargain for drops
12:46 PM CaptHindsight: also depends on how close you are to a retail outlet
12:46 PM CaptHindsight: unless you are shipping pallets of material
12:50 PM CaptHindsight: the prices in your cart change for each item (even if already in the cart) based on the number and types of items l9
12:51 PM CaptHindsight: maybe it's a % discount based on total weight
12:51 PM gregcnc: one place I checked did it by total weight
12:51 PM perry_j1987: so throw some lead drops in the cart at same time haha
12:51 PM Tom_L: x2 for shipping
12:52 PM CaptHindsight: Prices on the Alro Online Store are recalculated on a daily basis.
12:52 PM CaptHindsight: Pricing is subject to change based on combinability of all items in the cart.
12:53 PM CaptHindsight: looks like the prices for drops is less when you order at least one custom cut to length
12:54 PM CaptHindsight: the UPS rates are pretty good
01:01 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: ever use the Starrett vs other ground flats?
01:01 PM gregcnc: no
01:02 PM CaptHindsight: 2x the prices
01:02 PM CaptHindsight: for A2 anyway
01:03 PM CaptHindsight: be a proud sponsor of Starrett profits!
01:05 PM Tom_L: it's all in the name
01:07 PM CaptHindsight: heh, not as bad a s fastenal, grainger or mcmaster
01:19 PM gregcnc: great deal on machinery's handbook? https://www.ebay.com/itm/223557139178
01:20 PM CaptHindsight: FIRST Edition
01:20 PM CaptHindsight: metals, fad or here to stay?
01:20 PM gregcnc: apparently you can buy reprints, but why?
01:20 PM roycroft: there's a bridgeport class mill for sale not too far from her for $1k
01:21 PM roycroft: https://eugene.craigslist.org/tls/d/eugene-jet-vertical-mill/6913656558.html
01:21 PM CaptHindsight: such a deal
01:21 PM roycroft: i'm not sure what i think about it
01:21 PM roycroft: the price is right
01:21 PM roycroft: but the bed is pretty rusty
01:21 PM roycroft: and the seller says some parts are missing
01:21 PM roycroft: it looks like it might have been a cnc conversion prospect that never went anywhere
01:22 PM roycroft: scrap value should be close to $1k though, right?
01:22 PM roycroft: that would be < 50 cents/lib
01:22 PM roycroft: lb
01:23 PM roycroft: i wish there was a picture of the head
01:23 PM CaptHindsight: depnds on whats missing
01:23 PM roycroft: that there's not is cause for concern
01:23 PM roycroft: yeah
01:23 PM roycroft: and i have no idea
01:23 PM roycroft: it's an hour's drive
01:23 PM roycroft: and i'd have to rent a vehicle - my toyota pickup would not haul it over the mountainous roads
01:24 PM CaptHindsight: spindle is there
01:24 PM roycroft: there's a section of 12% grade that i can't avoid just north of where the mill lives
01:24 PM CaptHindsight: maybe no motor
01:24 PM roycroft: there's a motor sitting on the base of the machine
01:24 PM roycroft: which worries me
01:24 PM CaptHindsight: ask for more pics
01:24 PM roycroft: but if i could get it for $750 that would almost certainly be a good deal
01:24 PM roycroft: i might do that
01:24 PM roycroft: i don't have room for it
01:25 PM gregcnc: no point in guessing. call email for info if serious
01:25 PM CaptHindsight: send pics of your money in exchange
01:25 PM roycroft: but if it's cheap enough i would be inspired to somehow make room for it
01:25 PM roycroft: if it's mostly intact, does the one pic make it look potentially worthwhile?
01:25 PM roycroft: that rust on the bed appears to be just light surface rust
01:26 PM CaptHindsight: if the rust hasn't made pits in the ways
01:26 PM roycroft: right
01:26 PM roycroft: and there's an x-axis power feed
01:26 PM roycroft: which is the most important one to have, if you only have one
01:26 PM CaptHindsight: looks good from here
01:27 PM roycroft: a spindle power feed would be nice, but since there's no picture of the head i don't know if it has one
01:27 PM roycroft: it's 3 phase, which is nice
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: no big deal
01:27 PM roycroft: that means instant reverse
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: unless it was dropped on its head
01:27 PM roycroft: and easy to add a vfd if it's belt drive
01:28 PM roycroft: based on my knowledge of jet tools and the paint color, i'd date that to the early to mid 1980s
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: my BP is from 1960
01:28 PM roycroft: he lists it as "like new"
01:28 PM roycroft: and it obviously isn't
01:29 PM gregcnc: 1000$ isn't like new price
01:29 PM roycroft: no, it's not
01:29 PM roycroft: and i don't expect it to be "like new" at that price
01:29 PM gregcnc: do you even know if it's actually available?
01:29 PM roycroft: my concern is not that it isn't "like new"
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: unless you find that the base, head or tables are bent or cracked, seems worth it
01:29 PM roycroft: my concern is that he's trying to misrepresent it
01:29 PM roycroft: i do not know
01:29 PM roycroft: i have not contacted him yet
01:30 PM roycroft: i just saw the listing
01:30 PM gregcnc: you won't know unless you go look
01:30 PM roycroft: right
01:30 PM CaptHindsight: ask him who he voted for :)
01:30 PM roycroft: i'll try to contact the person
01:30 PM roycroft: i know where he lives
01:30 PM roycroft: i know who he voted for
01:30 PM roycroft: he lives in a town that had a mass school shooting a few years ago
01:31 PM roycroft: and on the day of the shooting the sheriff said that if anyone trys to pass a law to "take people's guns away" he'll defy the law
01:31 PM roycroft: when we passed universal background checks in oregon that sheriff said that it is tantamount to "taking people's guns away" and that he will not enforce the law
01:31 PM roycroft: he was reelected overwhelmingly
01:32 PM roycroft: so i really do know who the guy voted for :)
01:32 PM roycroft: but that doesn't matter
01:32 PM gregcnc: there is a second one in the background
01:32 PM roycroft: there are honest people in all political camps
01:32 PM roycroft: and there are dishonest people in all political camps
01:32 PM gregcnc: or free shipping https://www.amazon.com/JTM-1-NEWALL-DP700M-2-axis-DRO/dp/B001D6SNR2
01:33 PM roycroft: so i can get one for $1k if i go pick it up myself
01:33 PM roycroft: or get one for $1k + $9k if i want it delivered
01:34 PM * roycroft emails the guy
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: a few skate wheels and a tow bar
01:34 PM roycroft: that's the other thing
01:34 PM roycroft: i don't know if this guy has any way to load it
01:34 PM roycroft: if i have to bring loading gear with me that's a complication
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: tiltbed truck
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: winch it out and up
01:34 PM roycroft: also, my driveway is sloped about 4 degrees
01:34 PM roycroft: which makes unloading challenging
01:35 PM roycroft: and my garage door is low - i'm sure i'd have to take the head off at the turret to get it in the door
01:35 PM CaptHindsight: the Egyptians built pyramids, you gonna let a bunch of cavemen beat you?
01:35 PM roycroft: which would make it lighter and easier to move, of course
01:36 PM roycroft: actually, i might be able to rotate the head sideways and get it underneath the door
01:36 PM * roycroft needs to email the guy before speculating further
01:36 PM roycroft: i got a good sanity check here, thanks
01:37 PM roycroft: i thought it was potentially a good deal, and you all confirmed that
01:37 PM roycroft: now to get more info and see if it really is a good deal
01:55 PM Wolf__: roycroft: could be worse, could be in a basement...
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: frame house attic with only access by ladder
01:58 PM roycroft: yeah, that would be more fun
01:58 PM roycroft: if i buy the mill i'm confident i can get it in my garage
01:58 PM roycroft: i don't have the $1k right now
01:59 PM roycroft: but i've never seen one for <$2k around here, so i'd scrape up the money
01:59 PM CaptHindsight: i came across some nice lathes ~10 years ago, they were in a basement
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: they had no way to load or get them out
02:00 PM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/fqp4eES.jpg
02:01 PM CaptHindsight: had another turret lathe in great condition, some accessories were still wrapped in the factory wax paper...
02:01 PM Wolf__: I didn’t take any pics while getting the thing out of the stair well
02:01 PM CaptHindsight: was in an old leaky roof building
02:03 PM roycroft: piece by piece :)
02:03 PM roycroft: but even if you do that, the lathe bed itself is a big, heavy piece
02:03 PM CaptHindsight: Wolf__: did you drive that down the stairs?
02:03 PM Wolf__: I wish…
02:04 PM * roycroft realises that a good vise will cost almost as much as that cl mill
02:04 PM Wolf__: forks over bushes and over bottom of the stairs, used the chain fall to pull it out the door and up 8 foot
02:04 PM roycroft: a 6" kurt is going for what? about $650 these days?
02:04 PM Wolf__: around that, my GMC was $600 shipped iirc
02:05 PM roycroft: so if i get the mill for $750 the vise will almost double the cost
02:05 PM Wolf__: *GMT
02:05 PM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/pNAvy1M.jpg
02:05 PM Wolf__: but I’ll admit that its overkill
02:05 PM roycroft: i figure it will cost me about $100 or so to move it
02:06 PM roycroft: but it is shiny
02:06 PM roycroft: i'm going to assume that for what they guy is asking, that mill comes with zero toolling
02:07 PM roycroft: but my little grizzly mill/drill has an r8 spindle, so i'm good to go
02:07 PM Wolf__: maybe
02:07 PM roycroft: especially since there's another mill in the background of that picture
02:07 PM roycroft: he's gonna keep everything
02:07 PM roycroft: unless that other mill has a different spindle taper
02:07 PM roycroft: i keep saying "he"
02:07 PM Wolf__: I bought a whole basement so idk lol
02:07 PM roycroft: the seller could be a woman
02:07 PM roycroft: i really don't know
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: been using these without issue https://www.shars.com/6-690v-cnc-milling-machine-vise-0-0004-1
02:08 PM roycroft: shars make some decent products
02:08 PM roycroft: does that one pull down when you tighten it like a kurt?
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://postimg.cc/bDztt74p
02:09 PM roycroft: my 4" import vise just pushes forward, and it always lifts up about 0.001" when i tighten
02:09 PM roycroft: but if i'm honest, should i make a deal and get that mill i'll be really broke when it comes to money for the shop for quite a while
02:10 PM Wolf__: thats the same issue I had with the vise that came with my mill
02:10 PM roycroft: and i'd almost certainly start out using the 4" vise from the mill/drill
02:10 PM roycroft: i'd also regret having just purchased that 6" rotary table, even though it was a really good deal
02:10 PM roycroft: if i get a bridgeport class mill i'd have held out for an 8" or 10" at least
02:10 PM Wolf__: dont underestimate what you can do with strap clamps right on the table
02:11 PM roycroft: yeah
02:11 PM roycroft: and i'm already thinking about how to make sacrificial tables for the rotary table that are >6"
02:11 PM Wolf__: really I end up using my mini pallet more then anything for work holding
02:12 PM roycroft: i'll still mostly be making small parts
02:12 PM roycroft: it's really not the capacity of a bridgeport that i need
02:12 PM roycroft: i just need to be able to take cuts >0.010" at a time
02:12 PM roycroft: a mill/drill is fine for aluminium, i suppose
02:12 PM roycroft: but it's tedious to use to machine steel
02:13 PM roycroft: if it's cnc'ed, then the controller computer gets to deal with the tedium, not me
02:13 PM roycroft: but mine is not at this point
02:13 PM Wolf__: yep, I mostly do small parts but often wish the travel on my mill was bigger
02:14 PM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/ZxR7NbY.jpg also out of laziness/time can say the SMW mini pallets are worth the $100
02:15 PM roycroft: my needs are not really great
02:15 PM roycroft: i'm happy with the little 12x36 lathe, for example
02:15 PM roycroft: i don't need a big one
02:16 PM roycroft: and a bridgeport class mill will probably be fine for me forever
02:16 PM roycroft: no need for a big one
02:16 PM Wolf__: same here
02:16 PM roycroft: bridgeports are not production mills
02:16 PM Wolf__: mine is smaller then a full bridgeport
02:16 PM roycroft: they're prototype and one-off mills
02:16 PM roycroft: and that's just fine
02:17 PM roycroft: a ton is enough mass to be able to machine steel smoothly, efficiently, and semi-accurately
02:18 PM Wolf__: yup, mine is at that edge, has enough HP but isnt solid enough
02:19 PM Wolf__: but one hell of a step up from my seig x1 lmao
02:19 PM roycroft: idiots
02:20 PM roycroft: a young (2-3 year old) black bear was hanging out in a neighborhood near portland
02:20 PM roycroft: people started feeding it and taking selfies with it
02:20 PM roycroft: the oregon department of natural resources were called
02:21 PM roycroft: they were going to relocate the bear because it was so close to civilization
02:21 PM roycroft: but they had to euthenize it because it has become so used to humans
02:21 PM roycroft: it's illegal to feed or approach bears
02:21 PM Wolf__: :/
02:21 PM roycroft: this is why
02:22 PM roycroft: we're not the only state with idiots though
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: why we don't allow bears in restaurants here
02:22 PM roycroft: yesterday i read an article about a man in alabama who was feeding meth to his "attack squirrel"
02:23 PM roycroft: he was arrested on posession of meth, and for having a pet squirrel
02:23 PM roycroft: he would have faced animal cruelty charges as well, but the sheriff's department had no way to safely take a blood sample to see if the squirrel had any meth in its blood, so they could not prove the meth feeding part
02:23 PM roycroft: first of all, meth
02:24 PM CaptHindsight: was the squirrel detained for further questioning?
02:24 PM roycroft: second of all, "attack squirrel?"
02:24 PM roycroft: wtf is that even about?
02:24 PM roycroft: the squirrel was, fortunately, able to be released into the wild
02:24 PM gregcnc: eh, people being well... people
02:24 PM roycroft: if i'm gonna burgle your house
02:25 PM roycroft: and you put up a sign in the window saying "warning! this hhouse is protected by an attack squirrel!"
02:25 PM roycroft: i'm still gonna burgle your house
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: they don't make good flat mates
02:25 PM roycroft: i would not know
02:25 PM roycroft: they provide good entertainment for my cat
02:26 PM roycroft: she can sit for hours at a time right by the patio door watching the squirrels scurry about in my back yard
02:26 PM roycroft: she is an indoor cat - she does not have any direct interaction with the squirrels
02:30 PM CaptHindsight: my most seen animal after dark recently are cats
02:30 PM CaptHindsight: #2 opossums
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: #3 deer
02:32 PM CaptHindsight: the hawks around here keep the squirrel populations down
02:32 PM roycroft: i see raccoons at night more than any other outdoor critter
02:33 PM andypugh: Red Kites were almost extinct in the UK until recently, now you can see 40 in 100 miles on the M40 motorway. I don’t know if they hang about by the motorway, or if there is one ever couple of miles in general.
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: the hawks here are so bold I've seen them pick up road kill between stop and go traffic on the expressway
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: the crows will drop nuts on the roadways for cars to crack them
02:41 PM andypugh: Crows are clever, they are known to use tools.
02:42 PM andypugh: (I suopose cars count as tools)
02:43 PM andypugh: Oh, so do kites.
02:43 PM andypugh: And not in any way I had ever heard of. Black kites use _fire_!
02:44 PM andypugh: (Wikipedia) In Australia the black kite (Milvus migrans), whistling kite (Haliastur sphenurus) and unrelated brown falcon (Falco berigora) are not only attracted to wildfires to source food, but will variously use their beaks or talons to carry burning sticks so as to spread fire, complicating human efforts to contain fires using firebreaks.[129]
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: wonder how smart their prehistoric ancestors were, the dinosaurs
02:47 PM andypugh: Hard to guess. The finosaurs had bigger brains.
02:47 PM andypugh: (dinosaurs, that is)
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: what's a good brand of pump that is magnetic drive, handles solvents so likely polypropylene and not high volume? few L/minute
02:52 PM FinboySlick: andypugh: According to Jurassic Park, they were way less stupid than humans ;)
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: how about emotional intelligence?
02:53 PM jym: CaptHindsight: why magnetic?
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: jym: isolated from the drive
02:54 PM jym: CaptHindsight: anything from harbor freight
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.tmagpumps.com/how-it-works-magnetic-drive-pump
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.processingmagazine.com/magnetic-drive-pumps-advantages-limitations/
02:59 PM FinboySlick: I like the last sentence: "Now you know how it works."
03:02 PM CaptHindsight: RTAI is odd
03:02 PM jym: "The More YOu know... "
03:02 PM CaptHindsight: the very first time you test a system for latency is always the worst
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: even if you use a live ISO on a flash
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: it's like the processor remembers
03:03 PM jym: lol
03:04 PM jym: CaptHindsight: whatcha doin all this testing for?
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: yet there is no persistent memory
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: jym: we were keeping RTAI alive since ~2010
03:05 PM jym: Not really needed if anyone listened to me, but Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: and recently a customer asked for some backup systems to keep on the shelf that we built ~2013
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: surprised that the PC cases were still in production
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: and we found some NOS of the motherboards
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: jym: what are people ignoring?
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: did you say something?
03:07 PM jym: Nope, I gave up try years ago
03:07 PM jym: trying*
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: jym: do you feel that people treat you as though you are invisible?
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: or silent
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: jym: what did you try years ago to proclaim?
03:09 PM XXCoder: why why why do people love light gray text on white backgrounds so much
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: just for fun
03:09 PM XXCoder: its not friendly for people with vision issues.
03:10 PM XXCoder: in my case, contrast
03:18 PM Deejay: gn8
03:37 PM Tom_L: XXCoder i've got one worse than that for color
03:37 PM Tom_L: it's so light i can barely see the text
03:37 PM Tom_L: and i can't change it
03:37 PM XXCoder: websites?
03:38 PM XXCoder: i got plugin I can recommand if it is, and if you use firefox
03:38 PM Tom_L: no it's a dialog on a program
03:38 PM XXCoder: oh yeah pretty lot less modifiable
03:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Smartcam/macro_screen.jpg
03:39 PM XXCoder: had to zoom in very hard to see anything
03:39 PM XXCoder: 300% maxed out
03:39 PM XXCoder: at 100% it looks like muddled blank dialog
03:39 PM Tom_L: it was obviously a bug but didn't get fixed in any release i have
03:40 PM XXCoder: i guess you reported it in git or something
03:40 PM Tom_L: no that's an old program
03:41 PM XXCoder: too bad :( would have to reverse engineer
03:41 PM XXCoder: find hex string for text color
03:41 PM Tom_L: if i change system colors to where it's visible everything else is reversed
03:41 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: one of my favorite artworks is a painting of a white cow eating marshmallows in a snow storm
03:41 PM Tom_L: i've already tried that
03:42 PM XXCoder: har har har capt
03:42 PM andypugh: Jym is an evengelical Xenomauist. :-)
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ledr.com/colours/white.htm
03:43 PM jym: andypugh: ?
03:43 PM andypugh: Why else would you be against the loveliness of RTAI?
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: i think he's just pro latency is all
03:44 PM Tom_L: who else would use RTAI beside lcnc?
03:44 PM andypugh: I think that’s part of the problem.
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: stock traders
03:44 PM andypugh: (Presumably Paulo does? )
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: they just don't share their use
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: most use preempt_rt, since RTAI is hard
04:26 PM _unreal_: ?
04:28 PM _unreal_: OHHHHH... that was weird. hehe I just got home. I have not finished typing the last thing I guess from last night... I type /msg /join #reprap and it popped up with >/join< #reprap I was like WAAA?
05:18 PM Tom_L: _unreal_` did you get your table drilled?
05:42 PM jym: You know those "springs" they place ont he handles of firplace tools to help from being too hot? How hot would I need to get it to restore the temper in the spring, and would water quenching be good enough?
05:44 PM jym: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71JIgs8o6wL._SX425_.jpg
05:48 PM jym: Hell, this might be a better deal than restoring https://www.shopsmartexpress.com/item/B07J4SPFSJ/pre-seasoned-cast-iron-camp-dutch-oven-4-1-qt-including-lid-lifter
05:49 PM jym: and free shipping even
05:53 PM Tom_L: cherry red then quench in oil or water
05:54 PM Tom_L: not real sure why that would need to be hardened though
05:54 PM jym: Tom_L: Really? cherry red? NOt bright orange?
05:55 PM Tom_L: we flame hardened the edge of dies that way
05:55 PM jym: Tom_L: It's lost all interity, I can bend the spring with my fingers
05:55 PM Tom_L: cherry red and follow with a wet rag
05:56 PM jym: I dont' think I can get red, bright otange yeah
05:56 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?q=what+temp+is+cherry+red&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1
05:57 PM Tom_L: somewhere between the two i suppose
05:58 PM jym: If I can only get bright orange, will it help at least?
05:58 PM Tom_L: hey, if that guy can smelt cast iron surely you can harden a little spring :D
05:59 PM Tom_L: sounds like right now it's fully annealed so anything will be better than the current state
05:59 PM jym: but my spring is bigger than his iron =)
06:00 PM jym: okey, just wasn't sure it it would help or not if I couldn't get up to the right temps
06:00 PM Tom_L: get it as hot as you can
06:00 PM Tom_L: nobody's gonna rockwell harness test it
06:01 PM jym: Maybe the Dutch Oven Police might
06:03 PM jym: I have to reshape the coils first =) lol
06:04 PM jym: Saw an arminean recipe that I want to try
06:05 PM jym: Roasted pumkpin stuff with rice, dried fruits, and nuts
06:09 PM jym: Ghapama
06:11 PM jym: I'm going to try it with baby pumpkins
06:29 PM perry_j1987: hmm
06:29 PM jym: jthornton: Yummy foods... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP5-ZJlkvgk
06:57 PM jthornton: way to long to watch on non free time
07:07 PM jym: jthornton: save and dl after midnight
07:07 PM jthornton: have to wait till 4am
07:08 PM jym: jthornton: 4AM WTH, they changed it now?
07:08 PM jthornton: been like that for years
07:08 PM jym: Geeeze, have you setup a dl queue yet?
07:09 PM jthornton: nope
07:10 PM jym: jthornton: have you used curl before?
07:10 PM jthornton: only in passing
07:11 PM jym: jthornton: You should put your python skills to work and create a nice little free time dl script
07:11 PM jthornton: making some chicken code atm
07:12 PM jym: you still working on the coop?
07:12 PM jym: Those are THE MOST spoiled chickens ever =)
07:13 PM jthornton: absolutely, it's my job to protect and spoil and pamper them
07:13 PM jym: jthornton: haha HIGH FIVE
07:17 PM jym: Uh oh, he ran out of internets
07:35 PM perry_j1987: guys guys guys... great news!
07:35 PM perry_j1987: 1/2" endmills dont snap like spaghetti like 1/8 endmills do hah
07:35 PM perry_j1987: ring the bells!
07:36 PM jym: perry_j1987: pfff, you are just not trying hard enough
07:37 PM perry_j1987: its amazing how far chips can fly
07:37 PM perry_j1987: such small things not much mass to carry them lol
07:37 PM perry_j1987: heh
07:40 PM andypugh: Interesting article: https://hackaday.com/2019/06/19/the-process-behind-manufacturing-that-mac-pro-grille/
07:40 PM andypugh: I was thinking about making some this evening, it looks easy.
07:43 PM andypugh: Interesting comments. I am not sure I agree with many of them. Apple will sell several of these, make some profit on all of them, and be happy. Unlike, say, a car company with the best-selling car in Europe who lose $200 on every one. Who has the best policy there?
07:43 PM perry_j1987: make a raspberry pi case with that feature im sure that'd get alot of clicks on social media
07:43 PM andypugh: Good point. Now where did I put that sheet of Mic6?
07:44 PM perry_j1987: have to start by melting popcans of course for extra credit
07:44 PM Tom_L: cans aren't worth melting
07:44 PM Tom_L: too thin and oxidize away
07:44 PM perry_j1987: aye
07:45 PM perry_j1987: small engine blocks are what i use to use
07:45 PM perry_j1987: bust apart with sledge hammer to pieces to fit in crucible
07:45 PM Tom_L: just made a coupld molds for aluminum parts
07:45 PM Tom_L: what do you make with it?
07:45 PM perry_j1987: it was years ago
07:46 PM perry_j1987: last thing i made was a pull knob for lawn mower
07:46 PM perry_j1987: nothing fancy
07:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Final_mold3.jpg
07:47 PM Tom_L: trigger
07:49 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/A3_2.jpg
07:49 PM Tom_L: i milled a few to start
07:49 PM Tom_L: he wanted to try to cast em
07:50 PM perry_j1987: one day i'd like to build a small injection molding machine
07:50 PM jym: Watch teh video, piece of crap, only 1.6TB or ram, eeesh
07:50 PM andypugh: Apparently you can do small-scale injecton moulding with a glue gun.
07:51 PM jym: IT's the mold that's the bitch part
07:52 PM andypugh: Not for anyone here, I wouldn’t have thought? Does ayone here _not_ have a CNC mill?
07:52 PM Tom_L: heh
07:52 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure jym does
07:53 PM jym: It's a hydralic clam sheel, with ecejctor pinss
07:53 PM jym: cnc router
07:53 PM Tom_L: almost qualifies
07:53 PM jym: ok, wooden molds then
07:54 PM Tom_L: mine does steel alot better than i ever thought it would
07:54 PM Tom_L: wasn't planning to do steel on it really
07:54 PM Tom_L: just slow due to the spindle
07:55 PM jym: Tom_L: your router?
07:55 PM Tom_L: mill
07:55 PM jym: isn't that what it's suppose to do?
07:55 PM perry_j1987: am I the only one with a 6040 in here? :P
07:56 PM CaptHindsight: i have a 3045
07:56 PM Tom_L: jym, the spindle is only .6 hp
07:56 PM jym: perry_j1987: no, my router frame is 6040
07:56 PM jym: Tom_L: oh , ok
07:57 PM perry_j1987: im having a bunch of fun with mine. front left corner is a little 3" mill vise, whole right side is rotary axis and tailstock then back left is spoilboard
07:57 PM jym: andypugh: here ya go http://saccade.com/blog/2019/06/how-to-make-apples-mac-pro-holes/
07:58 PM andypugh: jym: Yes, that’s the link fromt he article I posted.
07:59 PM jym: andypugh: I"m not sue what al the math is about, just looks like the holes are offset front to back
08:00 PM jym: andypugh: isn't it?
08:00 PM andypugh: Yes, it’s not a hard thing to make
08:00 PM andypugh: It’s pretty, though.
08:01 PM jym: Very pretty, That might look nice with liek walnut and maple veneered together
08:02 PM jym: andypugh: how thing a piece of material are you going to try with?
08:02 PM perry_j1987: make one of those dressing blind things
08:03 PM perry_j1987: with that as the inset
08:03 PM andypugh: I won’t bother now, I am sure that dozens of people did it the same day
08:03 PM andypugh: It reminds me a bit of the classic carved wood grille:
08:05 PM jym: Ok is this image "off" http://saccade.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CheeseOnPhoto.svg
08:06 PM andypugh: ( I was going to post an iumage link, but all I can find is the accursed “pinterest” and I have my pride.
08:07 PM andypugh: But with a chisel morticer and a chisel you can carve solid wood to look like basket weave pretty quickly.
08:08 PM jym: video https://www.apple.com/105/media/us/mac-pro/2019/36178e80-30fd-441c-9a5b-349c6365bb36/design/case-manufacturing/large.mp4
08:09 PM andypugh: (ie quick enough that I did it as vents when making airong cupboard doors)
08:10 PM perry_j1987: looks like something you'd make up when you have a new guy starting that day and tell him to debur it lol
08:10 PM andypugh: jym: The first steps are easy. The gloss over the deburring. Note how that solid model has the interesct holes with square rather than sharp edges.
08:12 PM jym: andypugh: I'm still not getting it yet, it's okey, Ill read over that page again
08:16 PM andypugh: Hmm, I am puzzled by this question on the forum: “Anyone know why a hydraulic motor would be tripping contactor?"
08:17 PM andypugh: Has anyone ever seen a hydraulic contactor?
08:17 PM andypugh: Wouldn’t that be called a “valve” >
08:19 PM jym: ignore the word "hydralic" in the question
08:20 PM * jym is debating if it's a good idea to hang a hammock from the garage rafters
08:21 PM andypugh: I am debating if it is a good idea to still be up rather than in bed.
08:21 PM andypugh: I have formulated a conclusion.
08:25 PM perry_j1987: depends how much you weigh jym :)
08:34 PM perry_j1987: ok setting up to give threading a try on the lathe
08:34 PM perry_j1987: added reotary encoder and index pulse to it not long ago
08:35 PM perry_j1987: need to grind up a hss 60 degree tool
08:37 PM perry_j1987: do i put a rake on threading tools or leave it flat?
08:39 PM Tom_L: i'd probably leave it flat
08:39 PM Tom_L: but i'm no expert on thread cutting tools
08:44 PM perry_j1987: ok
08:47 PM CaptHindsight: perry_j1987: I have the smaller cousin of yours https://postimg.cc/Mv7KQB9X
08:48 PM perry_j1987: ah nice
08:48 PM perry_j1987: mine actually came in a crate fully assembled
08:48 PM perry_j1987: i was kind of looking forward to putting it together at the time
08:48 PM CaptHindsight: so did mine but I completely rebuild them properly
08:49 PM jym: damn engineer types
08:49 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/CvsLnS6.jpg have bigger versions as well
08:49 PM perry_j1987: that place is way too clean
08:50 PM jym: exactly
08:50 PM perry_j1987: you need to turn your keys over to me :P
08:50 PM perry_j1987: heh

08:51 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Still way too clean
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: jym: they don't get very dirty here https://postimg.cc/bZFB3CJJ
08:53 PM jym: CaptHindsight: It's all WAY TOO CLEAN, you must be some kinda freak!
08:53 PM Tom_L: i'd hesitate to sit in a chair. i might get it dirty
08:54 PM jym: perry_j1987: The typical rule is a 10x safety factor
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/YxuAR3b.jpg my aluminum saw is in front of this one, OK?
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: see what flies inside
08:55 PM Tom_L: you sprinkled that for the pic... i swear ya did
08:55 PM perry_j1987: lol
08:55 PM jym: what Tom_L said
08:55 PM perry_j1987: staged
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: https://postimg.cc/bDztt74p is this better?
08:56 PM Tom_L: barely
08:56 PM CaptHindsight: https://postimg.cc/K3LNV5tp my floors
08:56 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Your OCD is showing
08:57 PM jym: I could probably eat off that floor
08:57 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/A3_batch/Batch2.jpg
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: this one has ink stains on it https://i.imgur.com/EAF5oPj.jpg

08:57 PM Tom_L: now _that's_ a workbench
08:58 PM jym: Yep
08:58 PM jym: I was JSUT gonna say that!
08:59 PM CaptHindsight: hah, see if you can find mine
09:01 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/Base1.jpg
09:01 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/F7ePgRy.jpg
09:01 PM Tom_L: i shoulda done that on my steel table but it was full of crap
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: jym: you have to compartmentalize your messes
09:06 PM CaptHindsight: https://ibin.co/2u5XXEUdLjMj.jpg 50um gap with dust (~0.002")
09:06 PM perry_j1987: so there IS dust in your shop
09:06 PM perry_j1987: unfortunately you need a microscope to see it? :P
09:07 PM jym: perry_j1987: it's photoshopped dust
09:07 PM CaptHindsight: https://ibin.co/2u5Wc64E2VOX.jpg yes, more dust
09:07 PM perry_j1987: heh
09:07 PM CaptHindsight: filth everywhere, not to mention dust
09:08 PM perry_j1987: that t-slot looks much heftyier than the one on my 6040
09:08 PM perry_j1987: or maybe its camera trick since thats smaller frame etc
09:09 PM CaptHindsight: the table on the 3045?
09:09 PM perry_j1987: ya
09:09 PM CaptHindsight: 1/4" if I recall
09:09 PM perry_j1987: ya prob the same then
09:09 PM perry_j1987: 6mm / 1/4 in etc
09:11 PM CaptHindsight: 3/8" 10mm
09:12 PM CaptHindsight: just measured
09:12 PM perry_j1987: mine takes 6mm square nuts
09:14 PM CaptHindsight: mine is M10 sq nuts
09:15 PM perry_j1987: knew it looked heftyer
09:16 PM CaptHindsight: https://imagebin.ca/v/4HCxDgSmsztG some small 5-axis stuff
09:24 PM ziper: cool
09:28 PM jym: CaptHindsight: There's even a white sheet in that one SMH
09:29 PM Wolf__: jym: https://i.imgur.com/KQA1i82.jpg
09:30 PM jym: Wolf__: Nice, is that your new controller?
09:30 PM Wolf__: yep, seems to work well
09:31 PM jym: Very cool, I see springs... traack drive?
09:32 PM Wolf__: no, thats the pride/jazzy scooter, the front caster and motors are on a 2 link bar setup
09:32 PM jym: ah ok
09:32 PM Wolf__: I plan to use the tracks I have with a hyro mower setup
09:35 PM Wolf__: brakes were fun to figure out, controller kicks out a 3v high signal to turn them off, ended up using h bridge motor driver to give them 24v
09:37 PM jym: wolf, Oh there's a chip for that =)
09:38 PM Wolf__: yeah, just simple fet drive is suggested, but I have a few of the h-bridge laying around, and its just a more fancy fet lol
09:40 PM jym: How to I say this... There a low voltage and high votlage side. the LV side will turn on the HV side. and you and cna aaany voltage on either side, the chip has 8 channels
09:41 PM CaptHindsight: jym: what color are your shop sheets?
09:41 PM jym: will let you flip relays using paraport voltages as example
09:41 PM jym: CaptHindsight: bloodddy black and blue
09:41 PM Wolf__: thing I have on there is just a L298N dual H bridge, whole $14 for 5 on amazon lol
09:42 PM CaptHindsight: Wolf__: looks like a bomb, don't bring it to school
09:44 PM Wolf__: lol I’ve made better bomb looking things
09:44 PM Wolf__: jym: you mean this thing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HCFJC0Y
09:46 PM jym: Wolf__: , it's a chip
09:46 PM jym: and of course because I'm looking for it, I can't find it
09:46 PM Wolf__: usually how it works lol
09:47 PM jym: It's an oddbal number too
10:01 PM jym: Wolf__: what is the min voltage that meter can do?
10:01 PM Wolf__: 0
10:01 PM Wolf__: its a 3 wire w/ 5v feed
10:02 PM Wolf__: 4-30v powered 100V max read
10:03 PM jym: oh damn, I thought I only saw 2 wire, bummer
10:04 PM Wolf__: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077ZQQQFC they have 2 wire as well 2.5-3v -30v
10:06 PM jym: Wolf__: found it... https://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/IC/uln2803a.pdf
10:07 PM Wolf__: cool
10:08 PM jym: Wolf__: that board looks a bit different
10:09 PM jym: than the one you shouwed me the other night
10:09 PM Wolf__: which, the motor diver?
10:09 PM Wolf__: driver*
10:10 PM jym: yeah
10:10 PM Wolf__: I ended up ordering a roboclaw 2x60A instead of the sabertooth 2x32A
10:11 PM jym: are you going to be drawing 60A? the terminals/wire looks like 12ga
10:11 PM Wolf__: the motor wires are 14 I think lol
10:17 PM jym: 60A at 14ga, really???
10:17 PM Wolf__: yeah doubtful
10:17 PM jym: well, maybe as a fuse =)
10:18 PM Wolf__: dead stall might surge to almost 100
10:18 PM jym: Wolf__: I'm still looking at the Klein 2000A clamp on meter =)
10:18 PM jym: it's $30 more than the 600A one
10:21 PM jym: Wolf__: https://www.amazon.com/Resistance-Continuity-Klein-Tools-CL900/dp/B079MV9DRH/
10:22 PM Wolf__: jym: https://youtu.be/k-PeA20v6eE this is the reason for the 60A hill should be max test for these things lol
10:25 PM jym: Wolf__: but there things are rated for 300lbs, that lil ole hill should be fine
10:29 PM Wolf__: i’m thinking about hacking up the hover round and adding a 2nd wheel set w/ chain drive, and plan to see if can drag a 400-500lb brush mower
10:35 PM CaptHindsight: anyone recall the most efficient water desalination system?
10:40 PM jym: distillation?
10:40 PM jym: Wolf__: so dual motors per side?
10:41 PM Wolf__: single motor, 2 wheels per side linked w/ chain
10:41 PM jym: CaptHindsight: were you thinking somethine other than distillation?
10:41 PM jym: Wolf__: the stock motors can take that?
10:41 PM Wolf__: one way to find out lol
10:42 PM jym: Wolf__: let me know and take video if the blow up
10:42 PM jym: thye*
10:43 PM jym: Wolf__: what RC remote and transmitter are you using?
10:44 PM Wolf__: taranis w/ either 2.4ghz or 433mhz transmitter
10:44 PM jym: Wolf__: how much for the pair?
10:44 PM CaptHindsight: jym: fancy RO https://www.filtsep.com/
10:45 PM jym: CaptHindsight: ah
10:45 PM Wolf__: I’ve had it for a long while, I think $200 when I got it, not counting the 433mhz long range setup
10:45 PM jym: Define "long range" ?/
10:46 PM Wolf__: several KM in the air
10:46 PM CaptHindsight: jym: the HF digital meters aren't too bad
10:46 PM CaptHindsight: they aren't NIST traceable but get the job done
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: the real down side is usually the cheap probes
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: i bought a lot of Chinese meters and tools in China
10:49 PM net| is now known as Don-GS
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: most meters did their jobs and lasted
10:50 PM Don-GS is now known as net|
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: tools life depends on price
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: power tools were almost sold by battery voltage
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: $20 for cordless drill with 12V battery, $25 for a 15V, $30 for 18V etc
10:56 PM jym: CaptHindsight: I'f I'm buying another meter, I'm not going cheap on it =)
10:57 PM jym: CaptHindsight: and I like 5 HF freebee dmm's from HF, all dead =)
10:57 PM jym: some new in the package =)
10:58 PM jym: CaptHindsight: The generator pops it's circuit breaker periodically, I'm need to see how balanced the house panel is
10:59 PM CaptHindsight: wow 5
11:00 PM jym: CaptHindsight: they were free -shrug-
11:01 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Curious, is there a simple way to balance out both 120V legs in a house?
11:02 PM Tom_L: run every other outlet on the opposite buss
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: put even amounts of loads on each side of the common neutral
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: but then you need the loads to be on
11:02 PM jym: I mean at the panel (this is a funky OLD panel too)
11:03 PM CaptHindsight: turn a 2A load on one leg and then turn another 2A load on the other :)
11:03 PM Tom_L: AC, Dryer, stove etc cross both so those really don't count
11:03 PM jym: Tom_L: Oh, ok.
11:03 PM * Tom_L gives jym some screw in fuses
11:03 PM jym: Tom_L: Close
11:04 PM CaptHindsight: jym: how close to the breaker rating are you drawing current?
11:04 PM CaptHindsight: 80%, 90%, 70%. 5%, don't know, don't care, he made me do it mom
11:05 PM jym: CaptHindsight: I believe what's popping the 30A gen breaker is that the frig and freezer are kickin on at the same time
11:05 PM Tom_L: put those on different buss's
11:05 PM CaptHindsight: both inductive loads
11:06 PM jym: When I run the gen, I disab;e all 220V appliances
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: 120V for both?
11:06 PM jym: yeah
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: motor start is always high current
11:06 PM Tom_L: i turn off the AC and don't use the stove. that's about it
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: you could change the breaker in the generator
11:07 PM Tom_L: yeah use a 22 bullet
11:07 PM CaptHindsight: monitor the windings (temp)
11:07 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Grabs a .22lr
11:08 PM jym: I'm thinking It's just not a balanced load from the generator as I'm useing the 220VAC fromt he gen to feed the house
11:08 PM jym: but NO 220V loads
11:08 PM jym: just for distribution purposes
11:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.wolfautomation.com/products/circuit-breakers/ep60ul_series-32_amp-30_amp/
11:09 PM CaptHindsight: different curves
11:09 PM Tom_L: i run mine back thru the welding outlet from the garage
11:10 PM jym: Tom_L: =)
11:10 PM Tom_L: and use the welding extension to run it further away from the house
11:11 PM CaptHindsight: i go to a hotel when the power goes out
11:12 PM jym: CaptHindsight: too many scheduled blackouts this fire season
11:13 PM CaptHindsight: jym: have you considered moving the France?
11:13 PM CaptHindsight: less forest fires
11:13 PM CaptHindsight: bugs are less scary
11:14 PM jym: CaptHindsight: you sure about the bugs?
11:14 PM CaptHindsight: pretty sure
11:14 PM CaptHindsight: they do have different words for everything
11:14 PM jym: CaptHindsight: snails == lunch
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: yum
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: S car go
11:15 PM jym: way too bland and chewy, just gimme the garlic butter and some bread
11:16 PM CaptHindsight: they invented democracy
11:16 PM CaptHindsight: croissants
11:17 PM jym: nah
11:17 PM CaptHindsight: think about it
11:17 PM CaptHindsight: no rush
11:18 PM CaptHindsight: they serve cake to revolutionaries
11:18 PM jym: Yeah CalFire already said the the real danger will be in about 3 years do to heavy grass fires
11:18 PM jym: due*
11:18 PM CaptHindsight: ok I'm off for today, have to surface a steel plate ~15 x 15"
11:19 PM jym: gnight CaptHindsight
11:19 PM CaptHindsight: think they used a big shear to cut it
11:19 PM CaptHindsight: one edge looks rounded and torn
11:19 PM CaptHindsight: so it's slightly bent 1/2" thick
11:20 PM jym: CaptHindsight: your shop is way too clean to be doing any surfacing
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: jym: you saw the dirty mill
11:20 PM jym: CaptHindsight: photoshopped
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: hah
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: ok
11:21 PM CaptHindsight: I'll have some sand and gravel delivered
11:21 PM jym: CaptHindsight: just throw a party
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: very Chinese ball bearing factory -esque
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: Crun-Chi Bearing industries
11:23 PM CaptHindsight: you'll know it's a genuine CrunChi when you spin it!
11:23 PM jym: spin what?
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: the bearing squares
11:24 PM jym: Damn, my killawatt meter died, only reaidng 3.0vac
11:24 PM jym: ah, ewwwwww
11:24 PM jym: on a 120v line
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: you have no good luck with meters
11:24 PM jym: why you say that?
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: are you sure the wires are tight at the connections
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: maybe you have stuff floating?
11:25 PM CaptHindsight: 3VAC across what?
11:25 PM jym: reading the line voltage
11:25 PM CaptHindsight: hot to neutral? Neutral to ground? Hot to ground?
11:25 PM jym: it says it's 3V, it's just died is all
11:26 PM CaptHindsight: <-- plays Taps
11:26 PM jym: it's old
11:26 PM CaptHindsight: 2 seconds of silence
11:26 PM jym: lol, the Hz said "DC" on an AC line =)
11:27 PM Elmo40: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdB8m0YeylY
11:27 PM Elmo40: pen tool change!
11:27 PM Elmo40: so cool.
11:27 PM Elmo40: uses pneumatics.
11:28 PM jym: somebody made a pen plotter
11:28 PM CaptHindsight: surprised the germans allow that
11:30 PM jym: Wolf__: How much would you like???
11:30 PM Wolf__: ?
11:30 PM jym: Wolf__: you said the RC was long range
11:31 PM jym: the 433mhz
11:31 PM jym: how much range would you like
11:31 PM jym: Wolf__: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
11:31 PM Wolf__: it will do more then I’ll ever need lol
11:31 PM jym: Wolf__: ok, so nothing like 5 or 10 miles?
11:32 PM Wolf__: I think some guy did a 90mi out flight with the same hardware
11:32 PM jym: but that's areal, doens't count
11:32 PM jym: arial*
11:33 PM jym: Wolf__: I can bounce a signal off the moon and back on only 5 watts
11:33 PM Wolf__: ground stuff doesnt matter much, fpv system will drop out before the 433
11:33 PM jym: Wolf__: heh heh heh, wanna bet =)
11:34 PM Wolf__: well the 433mhz is 1w transmit, my 2.4ghz video is only 0.5w
11:34 PM jym: Wolf__: But *I* cna legally put out 100Watts =)
11:35 PM jym: DroneTV anyone???
11:35 PM Wolf__: lol
11:36 PM Wolf__: I’m good long as I can mow the yard from the couch when everything is all built up lol
11:36 PM jym: Wolf__: If you toss up a wire loop, you dont' have to do anything except three GO
11:37 PM jym: press*
11:38 PM jym: Hmmm, I wonder what the drones are using for video?
11:39 PM Wolf__: dji uses 2.4ghz i think
11:39 PM Wolf__: most fpv guys run 5.8ghz
11:39 PM jym: I mean for the cameras, I just dont know personally
11:40 PM Wolf__: cmos board cam
11:40 PM jym: and for hi-res?/
11:41 PM jym: I've seen some stunning footage, can't be cmos cam, can it?
11:41 PM Wolf__: small stuff gopro
11:42 PM Wolf__: for diy anyways, larger stuff I have seen carrying red epic cam
11:42 PM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/VbgciJh.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3NBB06i.jpg
11:44 PM jym: Wolf__: so camera... PLUS video transmitter?
11:44 PM Wolf__: yup
11:44 PM jym: and what are they using to watch live?
11:45 PM jym: Wolf__: typically
11:45 PM Wolf__: fpv/live down link on the diy side 5.8ghz or 2.4ghz, some guys still run 900mhz video as well
11:46 PM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/yGgXJlz.jpg
11:47 PM jym: Wolf__: and what are they using for watching the love video?
11:48 PM jym: live*
11:48 PM Wolf__: fpv goggles
11:49 PM Wolf__: https://www.fatshark.com/product-category/headsets/
11:49 PM jym: oh, those might drive me nuts =)
11:50 PM Wolf__: at home I just plug the video rx in to the TV
11:52 PM jym: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yES-lKj66aE
11:55 PM Wolf__: wonder how bad the latency is on that
11:56 PM jym: He should the video of the timer, not too bad
11:56 PM jym: showed*
11:57 PM Wolf__: half second ish
11:57 PM Wolf__: https://youtu.be/p9GwPiDue8k?t=157 (turn volume down) =D
11:58 PM jym: Oooooooooops
