02:08 AM Deejay: moin
03:42 AM CNC_Brian: Hi just building 2.8pre master and want it run in place
03:43 AM CNC_Brian: Is there some options to config for debuild or is that just to build a deb package?
03:57 AM lostinsip: anyone have any opinions on this as a possible purchase?
03:57 AM lostinsip: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnc-Router-Shopsabre-4896-4x8-or-5x8-Runs-great-servo-driven-with-ball-screws/392236443364?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3De819bd73b7b746c7bee937958e643734%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D392236443364%26itm%3D392236443364&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A5d1d993e-31d0-11e9-8872-74dbd18067fb%7Cparentrq%3Af5b756361680ac70
03:57 AM lostinsip: 20d68e08ffee0b00%7Ciid%3A1
03:57 AM lostinsip: damn that a long link better shorten it
03:58 AM lostinsip: https://bit.ly/2V1a9xm
03:58 AM XXCoder: link booomb
03:58 AM lostinsip: there!
03:58 AM lostinsip: sorry
03:58 AM XXCoder: CNC_Brian: evenually someone who knows will come in
03:58 AM lostinsip: yeah im UK so appreciate that the North American guys will be sleepy time
03:59 AM lostinsip: didnt realise that ebay links were quite that verbose haha
04:00 AM CNC_Brian: Is it servo or steppers?
04:01 AM lostinsip: servo, with mitsubishi drivers
04:01 AM CNC_Brian: The controllers look like servo drives
04:02 AM lostinsip: and it has a tool changer on the spindle which is more than i need but i guess it depends on the bidding
04:02 AM CNC_Brian: So that's over £1000 worth for starters, at its got a ATC spindle
04:02 AM jthornton: morning
04:02 AM lostinsip: hello :)
04:02 AM CNC_Brian: Are you using it for comercal work
04:02 AM XXCoder: lostinsip: looking across it im bit concerned with condition of runways and screw
04:03 AM XXCoder: looks like they wasnt doing regular maintance
04:03 AM lostinsip: ah ok, as in lack of lube
04:03 AM XXCoder: its not too bad just keep in look closer
04:03 AM XXCoder: no its been lubed just not changed
04:03 AM lostinsip: I mean it all depends where it goes on the price really
04:03 AM XXCoder: yeah
04:04 AM lostinsip: Im not going to get into a bidding frenzy
04:04 AM XXCoder: ypu probably have to do heavy maibntance and some repairing
04:04 AM CNC_Brian: You can set backlash in Linucnc so even if that are a bit worn its not the end of the world
04:04 AM XXCoder: indeed
04:04 AM lostinsip: I have a machine shop and am not shy of doing maintenance work
04:05 AM CNC_Brian: Got to be worth 4K if its going to earn you money.
04:05 AM lostinsip: its obviously an older machine as it isnt the current model off the shopsabre range
04:05 AM XXCoder: i dont know how to calculate valuation but condition seems okay just not very well maintanced
04:05 AM XXCoder: jthornton: check lost's link what ya think
04:06 AM XXCoder: i dont know how well its convertable to more modern pc and linuxcnc
04:07 AM lostinsip: well I am working on the principle that it is using standard servo drives so it shouldnt be too hard, and at first it has a PC and some Win*!*s software to get it going!
04:08 AM CNC_Brian: Google the specs on the drives. If its got step and direction you good.
04:08 AM lostinsip: good idea CNC_Brian
04:08 AM XXCoder: well pc dont look like its from flintstones era
04:08 AM XXCoder: so its not too bad
04:11 AM lostinsip: yeah i mean I have seen some older CNC machines with CRT and green numbers haha
04:11 AM lostinsip: I have a manual for the drive amplifiers, having a read now
04:12 AM CNC_Brian: Dam just compiled and installed RT kernel and didn't build my ethernet interface drivers :-(
04:12 AM jthornton: nice it has servos
04:12 AM XXCoder: yellow lcd display lathe lol
04:12 AM jthornton: 22 bids
04:13 AM XXCoder: jthornton: thought it was nice too, just some maintance issues but not too bad
04:14 AM XXCoder: lostinsip: screw is nice and thick too, saw machines with screw way too thin to carry load
04:14 AM jthornton: ATC too
04:15 AM XXCoder: 7 hours not much time lefgt
04:15 AM lostinsip: indeed hence coming to get some opinions :)
04:15 AM lostinsip: I appreciate everyones thoughts
04:15 AM XXCoder: my first upgrade would be small wall by toolholders
04:16 AM XXCoder: chips in taper ehh
04:16 AM XXCoder: same time wood machine it doesnt matter
04:16 AM jthornton: does it have a built in vacuum system?
04:16 AM CNC_Brian: Put it in the lap of the gods, just throw your highest bid in 15 sec before the end
04:16 AM XXCoder: it has giant hose, I'd say yes
04:16 AM XXCoder: and more hoses on front
04:16 AM lostinsip: yeah it has a vacuum table from the description
04:16 AM jthornton: that may be going to a shop vacuum system
04:17 AM CNC_Brian: may not get the vac pump though, can't see is attached
04:17 AM lostinsip: CNC_Brian: yeah thats my plan, assuming that nobody here said "OMG dont touch it"
04:17 AM lostinsip: If the price is right im willing to take a punt on the vacuum
04:17 AM XXCoder: well youre not afraidn of maintance work it would be good deal.
04:17 AM jthornton: ah yea I see the cyclone in the background of the second photo
04:18 AM lostinsip: I have a big extraction system here for my other machines so i dont need dust/chip extraction
04:18 AM lostinsip: but a table pump would be nice althogh not a deal breaker
04:19 AM XXCoder: i dont really like vacuum system
04:19 AM XXCoder: ran a giant metl cnc router it kept failing
04:20 AM CNC_Brian: I don't cut wood, but just being able to throw some stock on and it holds must be awsome
04:20 AM jthornton: some programmers are so dense https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneye/issues/1146
04:20 AM XXCoder: yeah as long as you consider where holes and cuts will be and dont let it release air into vacuum system
04:21 AM lostinsip: I think if we get it will go with clamping and tabs more than vacuum
04:21 AM XXCoder: yeesh
04:21 AM CNC_Brian: Keeps life exciting in the shop :-)
04:22 AM lostinsip: haha
04:22 AM lostinsip: yeah at what point does the pum not keep up with the leakage
04:22 AM lostinsip: *pump
04:22 AM XXCoder: lostinsip: i was working at shop that had "vacuum blackouts" sometimes
04:23 AM XXCoder: I used vacuum hold fixtures
04:23 AM XXCoder: its actually pressured air blackouts it couldnt keep pressure up
04:23 AM XXCoder: cnc machines kept failing, cant spray stuff etc
04:23 AM lostinsip: that sounds suboptimal!
04:23 AM XXCoder: they finally upgraded one tank to 4
04:24 AM lostinsip: yeah if the vacuum generator on this is a venturi one for air my shop compressor migh not cut it
04:24 AM lostinsip: id need to use a specific pump
04:24 AM XXCoder: cnc router had its own vacuum system. it sucked even after they upgraded and doubled it.
04:24 AM lostinsip: there is an upgrade plan to put a screw compressor and bigger thank in but $$££
04:25 AM XXCoder: its HUGE, you could park your car on it
04:25 AM lostinsip: yeah its not a small machine!
04:26 AM lostinsip: space is not a major issue here
04:26 AM XXCoder: actually one on ebay? its small compared to one i worked on
04:26 AM lostinsip: oh i see
04:26 AM XXCoder: you could fit that machine in that machine lol so big
04:26 AM lostinsip: its a bit like our collection of motorhomes !
04:27 AM lostinsip: the VW T5 would have fitted in the Iveco which in turn will fit inside the DAF
04:27 AM XXCoder: i dare you... turn one of your motorhomes into drivable cnc machine ;)
04:27 AM lostinsip: haha on site machining at european festivals lol
04:27 AM lostinsip: nothing like the sound of a spindle at 24K rpm in the morning
04:28 AM XXCoder: would be funny. though you'd need a system to balance machine at arrival
04:28 AM lostinsip: just add self levelling hydraulics to the truck
04:28 AM lostinsip: "just" ;)
04:28 AM XXCoder: indeed lol
04:31 AM lostinsip: actually reminds me of watching this the other day...
04:31 AM lostinsip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVk9WzRkXt4
04:32 AM XXCoder: air drag, baby
04:32 AM XXCoder: more drag than you can eat
04:32 AM lostinsip: I am not sure how I feel about it really, i get the feeling the little girl is not getting maybe the most healthy childhood
04:33 AM lostinsip: yeah its crazy, and whilst im into my tech and gadgets there are limits
04:34 AM XXCoder: ... is it actually functional?
04:34 AM XXCoder: none of shots is showing it driving somewhere lol
04:34 AM CNC_Brian: Anyone know ho two check which kernel modules are bound to the PCI devices?
04:34 AM lostinsip: well they do drive it about later in the video
04:34 AM XXCoder: h must have missed it
04:34 AM lostinsip: and then it has a massive diesel leak (spoiler)
04:34 AM XXCoder: so many random shots
04:34 AM XXCoder: I call it ADD video
04:34 AM XXCoder: changes scenes each couple seconds
04:34 AM lostinsip: haehe
04:35 AM lostinsip: yeah video for a generation below me i think
04:35 AM XXCoder: im gen x
04:36 AM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
04:37 AM lostinsip: yeah same, well early x
04:37 AM lostinsip: based on the wikipedia definition
04:37 AM XXCoder: im somewhat late in gen x lol
04:37 AM XXCoder: im 43
04:38 AM lostinsip: 48
04:38 AM XXCoder: add videos isnt always from young people though
04:38 AM XXCoder: I saw extremely ADD video from guy around same age as us showcasing cnc
04:39 AM lostinsip: this is true, although i kind of associate the style with the millenial gen
04:39 AM XXCoder: there was maybe 30 shot changes in few minutes
04:39 AM lostinsip: jesus
04:39 AM XXCoder: yep! 10% with very dizzying wipe changes
04:40 AM XXCoder: honestly 30 is under-guess. i guessed a scene change each 2 to 3 seconds, longest being whole 10 seconds
04:40 AM lostinsip: wow
04:40 AM XXCoder: but very rare. 1-2 seconds is very crowded
04:40 AM XXCoder: erm 1-3
04:41 AM lostinsip: on the subject of videos and CNC I do like Frank Howarths videos if you have seen them
04:41 AM XXCoder: it got me dizzy faster tha home videos and thats not easy to do.
04:41 AM XXCoder: looking
04:41 AM XXCoder: oh yeah! saw some videos it was decent
04:41 AM lostinsip: yeah the whole "selfie stick" you tube style can induce motion sickness
04:42 AM XXCoder: most of scenes were fixed
04:42 AM XXCoder: but few random handhelds also
04:42 AM lostinsip: Frank uses stop motion animation in them, really clever and entertaining
04:43 AM XXCoder: you ever seen myfordboy videos? sometimes he does something that make me go ehh but most times hes decent
04:43 AM lostinsip: no will take a look
04:43 AM lostinsip: thanks :)
04:43 AM XXCoder: though I feel he will be retiring from youtube stuff in few years. hes been retired for long while
04:44 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7WzpjCY7gs watching this at this time
04:49 AM lostinsip: good video :)
04:50 AM lostinsip: I am just begining my CNC adventure I have a manual lathe and manual mill (with power feeds and DRO)
04:54 AM XXCoder: cool :)
04:54 AM XXCoder: working as cnc machinist for soon 4 years
04:54 AM SpeedEvil: :)
04:55 AM XXCoder: im not amazing one btw
04:55 AM XXCoder: stuck halfway between operator and machinist
04:56 AM XXCoder: after few attempts its finally running well. cuts look good
04:56 AM XXCoder: (that video)
04:56 AM lostinsip: all my machine shop experience has been gained on manual machines so excited by the idea of something that does my bidding without me turning a handle
04:57 AM XXCoder: you have very strong background which will help yeah
04:57 AM XXCoder: i lack manual machinist background lol I graded with IT and CS degrees. :P ended up useless
04:58 AM SpeedEvil: CNC lets you program it so you don't have to watch while you break bits.
04:59 AM XXCoder: lol
05:00 AM lostinsip: I hope so, I was made redundant before xmas as was my gf so we are combining our skills (me as an electrical engineer/long time hobby machinist, her in web and design) to make some stuff
05:01 AM lostinsip: and use the workshops we have carefully build up here that let us build our house over the last 10m years
05:01 AM lostinsip: just 10 years haha
05:01 AM XXCoder: :)
05:01 AM XXCoder: being let go sucks but hopefully you will be able to jump up and start biz
05:02 AM lostinsip: I hope so it was so hard both loosing jobs of 10 and 7 years respectively within a month
05:02 AM lostinsip: the economy round here is on its arse
05:02 AM lostinsip: thanks for the support too
05:03 AM XXCoder: no plm
05:03 AM lostinsip: this channel has some really good people on it :)
05:03 AM XXCoder: indeed
05:05 AM lostinsip: We were looking at selling up and moving to england but we have just put way too much into this place, and we would loose 2000sqft of workshops and a house we restored with our own hands and get a 2 bed terrace in a city for what we would get for our house
05:06 AM CNC_Brian: You in bonny Scotland?
05:06 AM lostinsip: North Wales
05:06 AM lostinsip: with views accross the irish sea
05:06 AM CNC_Brian: Ah cool Im from Wrexhan
05:06 AM lostinsip: ah I know it well
05:07 AM XXCoder: im wayyyy west im at west side of usa
05:07 AM XXCoder: and quite north in usa also lol
05:07 AM lostinsip: you are up late then!
05:07 AM CNC_Brian: Seatle area?
05:07 AM XXCoder: little bit south of seattle yeah at tacoma
05:07 AM XXCoder: eh 3 am is fine
05:07 AM jthornton: I'm in the middle lol
05:07 AM XXCoder: i normally sleep at 4 am
05:07 AM lostinsip: haha
05:08 AM lostinsip: Tacoma with the famous galloping bridge
05:08 AM lostinsip: as was
05:08 AM XXCoder: yep i drove across it couple times (new one not old one lol)
05:09 AM lostinsip: CNC_Brian: I designed the big solar park at Five Fords sewage works near the new prison if you know it?
05:09 AM CNC_Brian: I wish Im lived isn US I like back backing, hunting and shooting
05:09 AM lostinsip: thats the only reason I know of Tacoma XXCoder
05:09 AM CNC_Brian: Cant walk anywhere in the UK without bumping into someone or private property
05:09 AM CNC_Brian: Guns ar band
05:09 AM XXCoder: nope, but then i dont explore that much
05:10 AM CNC_Brian: And hunting is all done by dicks in red coats
05:10 AM lostinsip: Its a bit more frontier around here CNC_Brian
05:10 AM lostinsip: but yeah the dicks in red coats annoy me
05:10 AM lostinsip: "the unspeakable in full pusuit of the uneatable"
05:11 AM CNC_Brian: My mum is still in wrexham
05:11 AM lostinsip: ah ok you are not living there now
05:11 AM CNC_Brian: I know where the prison is, down by the industrial estate
05:11 AM CNC_Brian: Near Gatwick
05:11 AM CNC_Brian: For work:-(
05:11 AM lostinsip: Yeah so the big treatment works there has 2.7MW of solar PV linked to the works, I designed that :)
05:12 AM CNC_Brian: Cool
05:12 AM lostinsip: ah damn its all very crowded down there
05:12 AM lostinsip: I live near CAernarfon
05:12 AM CNC_Brian: Lovely part of the world
05:12 AM lostinsip: 600 feet up a wild hill
05:13 AM lostinsip: stunning views
05:13 AM lostinsip: endless rain haha
05:13 AM lostinsip: XXCoder: you know about rain tho too coming from the Pacific north west no?
05:13 AM CNC_Brian: Alternative energy is big at the moment, strange you are having problems getting work
05:13 AM lostinsip: I could get work away from here no problem
05:14 AM XXCoder: lostinsip: yeah? we had huge snowstorm, one thats so rare its quite amazing
05:14 AM XXCoder: snow is still around after 7 days for this location its amazing if snow lasts 3 days.
05:14 AM lostinsip: I seen some of the picture
05:14 AM lostinsip: s
05:15 AM XXCoder: unfortunately climate change is altering rain pattern here
05:15 AM lostinsip: on the news, thats why I heard Seattle is more known for rain than snow!
05:15 AM CNC_Brian: Any linux gurus online?
05:15 AM XXCoder: it used to rain in least once each 2 weeks in summer. not anymore
05:15 AM jthornton: just ask your question
05:15 AM XXCoder: winter is having fewer and fewer rains also. fall and spring though actually more rain
05:16 AM CNC_Brian: Make modules_install
05:16 AM lostinsip: yeah climate change is hitting in odd ways all over, I saw some pics from the US recently and thought "day after tomorrow"!
05:16 AM CNC_Brian: Any way to stop to re compiling modules that have already been baked?
05:16 AM CNC_Brian: I just need the Realtek ethernet
05:17 AM Tom_L: morning
05:17 AM lostinsip: hey Tom_L
05:18 AM CNC_Brian: I de-selected too much when I built RT, now no internet :-(
05:18 AM Tom_L: 19°F Hi 30
05:18 AM CNC_Brian: Its ok we don't need to worry about global warming anymore
05:19 AM jthornton: time to do it over again I suspect
05:19 AM CNC_Brian: Apparently there will be no insects to pollinate plant so we will all starve to death
05:19 AM jthornton: morning Tom
05:19 AM lostinsip: CNC_Brian: i saw that too
05:19 AM Tom_L: first one is never right...
05:19 AM lostinsip: reminds me of the novel "the death of grass"
05:20 AM lostinsip: hehe Tom_L
05:20 AM XXCoder: CNC_Brian: yeah we are losing bugs at amazing rate now
05:20 AM lostinsip: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_Grass
05:20 AM lostinsip: although a differnt reason for starvation
05:20 AM CNC_Brian: Its so depressing. We are determine to exterminate ourselves
05:21 AM lostinsip: i fear you are right CNC_Brian
05:21 AM lostinsip: Its one of the reasons me and my partner havent had kids
05:22 AM CNC_Brian: I was going to say glad I don't have any grandkids yet.
05:22 AM CNC_Brian: Dint want to depress everyone
05:22 AM lostinsip: its ok im hardened to it after years working in renewables
05:23 AM CNC_Brian: Do you sail?
05:23 AM CNC_Brian: Great for sailing up your neck of the woods
05:23 AM lostinsip: no but have some good friends who do, im a rare bod who moved to north wales and doesnt climb or sail or surf haha
05:24 AM lostinsip: yeah I have friends who teach at Plas Menai the watersports and sailing centre
05:24 AM lostinsip: they are mad for the sea!
05:24 AM CNC_Brian: JT It seems to have only build the extra modules anyway was finished in 10 min
05:24 AM CNC_Brian: Result. May get the machine running today after all
05:25 AM jthornton: that's nice that it only builds new modules
05:25 AM CNC_Brian: Who knew!
05:26 AM lostinsip: every day is a school day!
05:27 AM lostinsip: CNC_Brian: in terms of work etc. one of the main reasons we are staying here is the location and the fact that if we sold up and moved we would go from 2 acres and workshops etc. etc. to a big mortgage and a terrace in bristol or manchester
05:27 AM CNC_Brian: When I did my day skippers they made me sale under the Menai bridge. No engine, just sail
05:27 AM lostinsip: ah through the swellies!
05:27 AM lostinsip: that must have been fun
05:27 AM CNC_Brian: Crapping myself
05:27 AM lostinsip: i bet haha
05:28 AM CNC_Brian: You do design, or are you hands on?
05:29 AM lostinsip: well my chequered career has been a lot hands on but in my last job i did a lot of design with autocad etc.
05:29 AM lostinsip: although more electromechanical than 3d stuff
05:29 AM lostinsip: so im learning fusion at the moment
05:30 AM CNC_Brian: Got to be able to get some free-lance
05:30 AM CNC_Brian: My mate did all the electrical layouts for HS2
05:30 AM CNC_Brian: Miles of tray work
05:30 AM lostinsip: I am getting a bit through my old employer, but its going to need extra stuff
05:31 AM lostinsip: wow thats one hell of a CAD task
05:31 AM CNC_Brian: Yes and she lives in spain
05:31 AM lostinsip: my current project is designing a super insulated camping pod thingy in fusion so we can do AirBnB in our feild
05:32 AM lostinsip: if im honest my redundancy has knocked me quite badly and I need to get out and tart my skills about a bit
05:32 AM CNC_Brian: If you get the router you can build it youself
05:32 AM lostinsip: thats the plan :)
05:33 AM lostinsip: at least in part, we have some very funky designs for decorative stuff in wood and metal we are going to try and sell to hipsters haha
05:33 AM CNC_Brian: Yes Im a Cisco engineer. Had enough of that sh1t after 20 years
05:33 AM lostinsip: as well as pragmatic stuff for people who need signs or whatever
05:34 AM lostinsip: ah ok, I do all our network stuff here I have recently upgraded to Ubiquiti kit (befor i lost my job!)
05:34 AM lostinsip: couldnt quite afford cisco
05:35 AM CNC_Brian: Just get used stuff you cant give it away.
05:35 AM CNC_Brian: Good skills to have, I work from home
05:36 AM CNC_Brian: How do I make the new module attach to the hardware is that mod probe?
05:37 AM lostinsip: I think we are going to become what our friend called "techno crofters"
05:38 AM CNC_Brian: Thats a new one LOL
05:40 AM lostinsip: i though it quite apt, my gf is going to do some freelance graphic design work
05:41 AM lostinsip: and has some expenses paid gigs at festivals as a DJ so we get some free hollidays haha
05:44 AM CNC_Brian: Im sure something will come along with you skills
05:44 AM lostinsip: thanks :)
05:45 AM lostinsip: Its been great chatting to people on here as its given different perspectives from the local goldfish bowl!
05:46 AM lostinsip: im off to make coffee and head to the workshop to carry on preparting the ground for upcoming projects!
05:46 AM lostinsip: *preparing
05:46 AM XXCoder: later :)
05:46 AM CNC_Brian: Cheers
05:46 AM lostinsip: thanks everyone for advice and chats, i will let you know how it goes with the router :)
06:29 AM SpeedEvil: https://mobile.twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1096722535217917952?p=v
06:30 AM SpeedEvil: SpaceX foundry casting Raptor engine manifold out of Inconel pic
06:30 AM SpeedEvil: ~1400C/2600G
06:30 AM SpeedEvil: F
06:30 AM XXCoder: inocel mold?
06:31 AM SpeedEvil: yes
06:31 AM SpeedEvil: No.
06:31 AM SpeedEvil: Inconel metal
06:31 AM XXCoder: wow interesting
06:37 AM CNC_Brian: Is the Raptor the new engine or the existing on falcon?
06:50 AM SpeedEvil: The new one.
06:51 AM SpeedEvil: It has just beaten the best russian engines in terms of chamer pressure - 390 bar IIRC
06:51 AM SpeedEvil: 180 tons thrust.
06:51 AM SpeedEvil: Methane/oxygen
07:03 AM CNC_Brian: The russians will just steal the design
07:04 AM Jymmm: Morning
07:04 AM SpeedEvil: The russian space program in many ways has all the problems of NASA, and piles of russia problems, and underfunding.
07:05 AM SpeedEvil: They're not going anywhere, without a vast reimagining.
07:06 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: They just need a good PR firm ;)
07:14 AM SpeedEvil: Fun design. Preburner burns oxygen/methane to 500C or so at 550 bar, then expands to ~300C or so at 450 bar, providing energy for pump to go from 1 bar liquid to 600 bar or so before the preburner. Thence the whole flow goes into the combustion chamber
07:16 AM SpeedEvil: ~half a ton of propellant a second
08:18 AM XXCoder: bet some people in here need this. https://www.instructables.com/id/Screw-Sorting-Machine/
08:22 AM Jymmm: If you saw my hardware rack that's not gonna do it
08:22 AM XXCoder: its for sorting handful of stuff so bit faster
08:22 AM XXCoder: youre right though huge bin sorting it wont do
08:23 AM XXCoder: someone made a lego sorter that used 3 delta pick and places
08:23 AM XXCoder: pretty dang effective, easy enough to adopt to nuts bolts and washers probably lol
08:24 AM Jymmm: gotta toss in cotter pins, paperclips, wire ties, bearings, etc
08:25 AM XXCoder: if I recall right lego sorter had 20 different entries, and have couple "unsorted but specific type"
08:25 AM XXCoder: one outright "failed to match" bin
08:26 AM Jymmm: Now, if it can do metric/imperial...
08:26 AM Jymmm: oh, and nails too
08:27 AM SpeedEvil: Jymmm: electronic components. Also sort by metal, and x-ray spectrometer results.
08:27 AM XXCoder: add in AI maybe lol show lots of metric pictures and lots of imperial pictures
08:27 AM XXCoder: see if it can detect and sort em lol
08:27 AM SpeedEvil: XRS would be awesome. Alas costly.
08:27 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: resistor sorter???
08:30 AM XXCoder: Jymmm: workable I bet. camera to detect where middle is, and 2 arms to go to and clip to ends
08:30 AM XXCoder: measure resistance and place it in approate bin
08:30 AM SpeedEvil: Practically, resistor kits are liely the better way
08:30 AM XXCoder: also "invalid" where value dont match marks on resistance
08:30 AM SpeedEvil: as they're now so cheap
08:30 AM Jymmm: XXCoder: optical reader
08:30 AM XXCoder: im saying use BOTH
08:31 AM XXCoder: opticial to read colors, then use camera to clip ends and measure actual ohms
08:31 AM srk: sounds cool, wanted to build something like that as well
08:31 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: And that's why you will never see a resistor sorting machine =)
08:32 AM srk: machine that would point to correct resistor from some heap of them
08:34 AM XXCoder: srk: or do a more fine +- ranges of resistors
08:34 AM XXCoder: suppose buy +- 10%, and you sort em by 1%
08:35 AM srk: automatic matching of components would be epic for audio stuff
08:35 AM XXCoder: so there would be 23 bins, 20 bins from minium to max 1% groups, error below range, error above range, and finally invalid (no resist or missing one pin)
08:36 AM Jymmm: or just buy 1% resistors and say fuck it =)
08:36 AM XXCoder: yeah depends on price really
08:37 AM XXCoder: honestly refinement isnt major goal of it, just having piles of resistors and wanna sort em is
08:37 AM XXCoder: even better if it could do any electrics (besides complex ones like chips)
08:37 AM Jymmm: WOOHOO My order has shipped, only 60 dys till it arrives =)
08:38 AM XXCoder: oh thats fun. boat eh?
08:38 AM Jymmm: Yeah, pot stand for my alcohol burner, just hope it fits my kit
08:39 AM XXCoder: well lkaters hope lostinsip gets that machine if its good
08:39 AM Jymmm: XXCoder: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2019-Alcohol-Stove-Stand-Rack-Spirit-Burner-Base-Bracket-Stainless-Steel-Rack-Outdoor-Tools/32956203591.html
08:40 AM XXCoder: interersting
08:40 AM XXCoder: off now later :)
08:40 AM Jymmm: XXCoder: Yeah, easier than making my own
08:58 AM Jymmm: Mmmmmmmmm BRAINZZZZZZ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GP2ZDZO/
10:06 AM CNC_Brian: Qtpyvcp with linuxcnc RIP, getting error no module named linuxcnc??
10:55 AM PL7icnc: Hello :o
11:00 AM PL7icnc: in forum some doppelpostings
11:06 AM Loetmichel: *hmpf* just bought 3 32gb usb2 thumbdrives made by toshiba at the local grocery store... Now i know why they were on sale for 6 eur each... <4mb/se writing speed... THAT will take a while for h2testw.exe to test for real 32gb...
11:09 AM PL7icnc: Loetmichel, price
11:09 AM Loetmichel: 6 eur each
11:09 AM PL7icnc: Loetmichel, grocery mediaM
11:09 AM Loetmichel: nope. toom
11:10 AM PL7icnc: 3.0 or still 2.0
11:10 AM Loetmichel: 2,0
11:10 AM Loetmichel: bit even for 2.0 <4mb/sec is a bit slow ;)
11:10 AM Loetmichel: *but
11:11 AM PL7icnc: i need to move Off Tschau
11:56 AM treats: Could anyone suggest some favorite strategies for clearing a relief? I want to finish with a morphed spiral then pencil, if that impacts anything.
12:04 PM lostinsip: hello :)
12:05 PM lostinsip: i didnt get the Shop Sabre from ebay I was outbid :(
12:05 PM lostinsip: will await another machine to appear in my range now I am more convinced by a used machine generally
12:22 PM lostinsip: hey gloops :)
01:50 PM togo: Any of you guys are actively involved in developing (hacking) LinuxCNC?
01:56 PM togo: I wonder what are the angles of attack supported or in development for 'closing the loop', such as in optimizing stepper acceleration or avoiding skipped steps?
02:13 PM gloops: encoder > linuxcnc
02:37 PM gregcnc: togo you can run encoder feedback with steppers https://youtu.be/sYaTLtgs-HY?t=426
02:41 PM gloops: i never got round to encoders but i want to at some point
02:42 PM gloops: was going to try adding encoders to screw shafts
02:48 PM togo: gregcnc: thanks, but I don't have encoders on my steppers
02:48 PM gloops: https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=66095
02:48 PM gloops: something similar
02:49 PM gloops: hi lostinsip wasnt looking earlier
02:49 PM togo: gloops: I was wondering if I used current sensors for each stepper driver?
02:49 PM gregcnc: current won't tell you much
02:49 PM gregcnc: stepper just need to be tuned
02:49 PM gloops: you want rotary encoders, optical
02:50 PM togo: The encoder would have to have more resolution than the stepper has steps right?
02:50 PM gloops: i went into it to do it myself but over a year ago ive forgot now, best way seemed to add an encoder to the screw shaft
02:51 PM gregcnc: as much resolution as you want
02:51 PM gregcnc: Emco built stepper machines with a single index pulse per rev
02:51 PM togo: If it had less resolution than the stepper has steps you would be partially blind, no?
02:51 PM gregcnc: if the index doesn't come at the correct number of steps it errs
02:51 PM lostinsip: hey gloops :)
02:52 PM lostinsip: sorry was distracted by the internet haha
02:52 PM gregcnc: of course if many movements are less than one screw rev it may be a while before it's caught
02:52 PM gloops: ive got this on autojoin - dont even noticed its connected at time
02:53 PM lostinsip: fair enough, i am not on many IRC channels
02:53 PM togo: how about a microphone on the stepper?
02:53 PM gregcnc: if you are missing a lot of steps you probably need bigger steppers
02:53 PM togo: cause usually the missed step is quite a knock
02:54 PM togo: so it the mcrophone triggers go to pause and home and restart...
02:54 PM lostinsip: I am slightly miffed i missed out on a cnc machine on ebay
02:54 PM togo: Maybe microphone in combination with current sensor?
02:55 PM togo: lostinsip: hate when that happens!
02:55 PM gregcnc: Eh i'm glad I missed some when i was looking for a lathe and ended up with the one I did
02:56 PM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/600P-R-Photoelectric-Incremental-Rotary-Encoder-5V-24V-AB-2-Phases-Shaft-6mm/152818579467?
02:56 PM lostinsip: yeah togo, I just hope that a better and cheaper machine comes along
02:56 PM gloops: how about those?
02:56 PM lostinsip: im just trying to avoid having too much chinese in my upcoming CNC diet!
02:57 PM lostinsip: with no offence to the nation or its people but i am still not convinced by the importers
02:57 PM lostinsip: when a UK agent cant even bother to correct the english in a spec it gives me pause
02:59 PM gregcnc: I don't think there is a "UK agent" they just pay people to list for them
02:59 PM gloops: heard a few horror stories from people who bought machines from china, think most end up reasonably satisified though
02:59 PM gloops: err satisfied
03:01 PM lostinsip: I guess i am just nervous about a lack of tech support if there are any issues
03:02 PM lostinsip: essentially i just dont have the money for the machines i would like, age old story
03:02 PM gloops: not a great issue with a stepper type machine, replacement bits are cheap
03:02 PM gloops: most are direct copies of quality western components
03:04 PM lostinsip: Yeah its true and most of the bits that could go on a machine in the uk are imports
03:05 PM togo: What about those trinamics drivers that say they ca do without encoders?
03:06 PM togo: It looks quite good in their demo videos
03:06 PM togo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_IuG20PIPQ
03:07 PM gloops: tb6600 driver is toshiba - china makes and sells thousands a week, DM542 is copy of Leadshine - you cant tell the difference
03:09 PM gloops: i dont think youll really need closed loop for a laser/router togo
03:10 PM gloops: i dont have any issue with lost steps, dont even think about it now, unless i try cutting to fast or hard, work within the motors ability
03:10 PM togo: I am an idealist... I know when I leave loops open I am asking for trouble in the long run, and I will never achieve really smart machines
03:11 PM gregcnc: if job material or runtime is a large investment, it's better to make a more reliable machine
03:12 PM gloops: well i like to play with this stuff and ill get round to encoders when i have time
03:12 PM gloops: end of the day the machine is for work
03:13 PM togo: I think the trinamics guys are on to something
03:13 PM gloops: im at a crucial stage in the development of my funeral urns, i cant start messing with the config lol
03:13 PM togo: no other companies has approached it like - that purely electronically?
03:13 PM togo: gloops: for yourself?
03:14 PM togo: your Urns?
03:14 PM gloops: no togo, ive got years left in me
03:14 PM togo: hopefully!
03:15 PM gloops: i put a heart on one and gave it the mrs for valentines
03:15 PM togo: gloops: with chocolates inside?
03:16 PM gloops: nah im not that soppy
03:17 PM togo: that trinamics development is pretty recent right?
03:18 PM gloops: ive not looked at it
03:20 PM togo: they will have to fear the wrath of the encoder and end stop maker industry worldwide ;)
03:22 PM gregcnc: same people make encoders that make those hall encoders
03:22 PM Tom_L: what's up today?
03:23 PM togo: yes thats another truely amazing feat that thea were apparently able to get the info just via current and voltage withour requiring in stepper field sensors
03:24 PM togo: like BLDC with hall sensors is normally far superior to sensorless
03:24 PM gregcnc: somebody got wise and applied sensors BLDC sensing to read steppers
03:24 PM gregcnc: sensorless BLDC
03:24 PM togo: makes me wonder what kind of computing power they integrated in their stepper drivers
03:26 PM Tom_L: http://www.excitron.com/
03:26 PM Tom_L: they _were_ using avr
03:28 PM lostinsip: exitron sounds like a name from a 50s sci-fi :)
03:28 PM Tom_L: heh
03:29 PM lostinsip: just what the name conjoured in my head, im sure their motion control kit is great!
03:30 PM Tom_L: no idea
03:30 PM lostinsip: it doesnt matter just my daft thought processes!
03:37 PM Loetmichel: sooo, finally got those thumbdrives checked: all 3 32gb are good. but VEEEEERY slow... -> Schreibrate: 3,69 MByte/s Leserate: 27,9 MByte/s H2testw v1.4
03:51 PM lostinsip: I am vaguely looking at this machine having lost out on the Shop Sabre, any thoughts on the machne, the brand or anything really?
03:51 PM lostinsip: it has the advantage of being relatively close to me
03:55 PM Deejay: gn8
03:58 PM gloops: link lostinsip?
04:00 PM lostinsip: https://bit.ly/2tqKNxe
04:00 PM lostinsip: oops
04:00 PM lostinsip: im not on the case at all today sorry
04:01 PM lostinsip: at least i shortened the link this time!
04:04 PM gloops: its all there, industrial machine, vac bed, software, dust extraction
04:05 PM lostinsip: yeah it seems pretty modern too
04:06 PM lostinsip: i guess i will have to see how the bidding goes, i always get anxious with ebay
04:06 PM gloops: not sure what that cut is supposed to be though, looks a bit rough
04:07 PM gloops: suppose the question is - how many miles on the clock
04:07 PM lostinsip: yeah it looks like a cock up in MDF!
04:08 PM lostinsip: I will message the seller, he seems to be a bit grumpy from the comments but we shall see!
04:09 PM Tom_L: maybe cash would make him less grumpy
04:10 PM lostinsip: good point Tom_L
04:11 PM lostinsip: I will ask about hours run/age and I also need to ask if he has means to load, assume he has but i dont have a highway capable fork lift!
04:15 PM lostinsip: I have asked the questions, hope he does not think I am asking stupid ones!
04:16 PM gloops: they are 32k + vat new
04:16 PM gloops: probably 50k of stuff in that bundle
04:18 PM lostinsip: it sounds quite tempting, although our business plan does not currently cover ply lining kits, but hey it might make a few quid as a sideline
04:19 PM lostinsip: thanks for the pricing heads up :)
04:30 PM gloops: rapid speed apparently 30m/min
04:46 PM lostinsip: thats pretty fast :)
04:47 PM lostinsip: sorry been in deep discussions about e-commerce solutions here
04:47 PM lostinsip: time for me to watch some telly and stop thinking!
04:47 PM lostinsip: thanks for your advice gloops I will let you know how it goes!
04:48 PM lostinsip: gn :)
07:33 PM MacGalempsy: greetings this Saturday evening.
07:33 PM Tom_L: nice cold winter night
07:37 PM MacGalempsy: ugggggh....nooooo
07:37 PM MacGalempsy: we got tricked with 75deg on Valentine's Day, then 30s the next day...
07:48 PM jthornton: it's so odd to not have to steer a car or turn off cruse when a car goes slower than you
07:49 PM MacGalempsy: what did you get that does that?
07:49 PM Wolf__: plow? =D
07:49 PM jthornton: Honda Hybrid Insight Turing
07:49 PM jthornton: Touring even
07:51 PM jthornton: it does pretty good at staying in the lane and going around curves and does excellent and maintaining the set distance from the next vehicle
07:51 PM MacGalempsy: nice. so cross country should be a delight?
07:52 PM jthornton: yea that's what I'm thinking
07:53 PM jthornton: was behind a truck and when it slowed down the car slowed down with it, that's pretty amazing to me
07:54 PM MacGalempsy: nice. I still have to hit the brakes!
07:55 PM Wolf__: I got to play with the auto radar cruise when I had a loaner from VW, was pretty cool being able to set the top speed and follow distance
07:56 PM jthornton: yea I really like that feature, no more kicking the cruse off and on and fiddling with the slow down speed up buttons
07:57 PM jthornton: it reads the speed limit signs and displays the last one it saw on the dash lol
07:57 PM Wolf__: thats cool
07:57 PM jthornton: no more wtf was the last speed limit sign lol
07:59 PM Wolf__: I usually just keep waze app open for that if i’m out side my normal OA
08:01 PM XXCoder: MacGalempsy: nahhh its mercy for lovers
08:01 PM Wolf__: I wouldnt mind a car w/ full auto pilot for traffic
08:02 PM SpeedEvil: M1A1 autopilot
08:04 PM MacGalempsy: When the committee desides the population is too high, they will just crash all the autopilot cars at once.
08:12 PM Wolf__: SpeedEvil: maintenance cost too high, almost as bad as a Mercedes
08:30 PM jthornton: naw they will just send out the scoop trucks when they run low of soylent green
08:32 PM XXCoder: heys
08:32 PM XXCoder: jthornton: thankfully none of my soylent is green
08:37 PM jthornton: yea, and time for me to retire see you in the morning
08:38 PM XXCoder: later :)
08:56 PM MacGalempsy: likewise, going to bounce out for the night.
11:12 PM ItsFlipp: Hey all. Anyone around that can help me diagnose why my 6061 parts are absorbing an insane amount of heat?
11:12 PM XXCoder: 6061 is trying to cook itself?
11:12 PM Tom_L: feed/speed wrong
11:13 PM Tom_L: dull cutters
11:13 PM XXCoder: was thinking it was board of some kind nm lol
11:13 PM ItsFlipp: yeah, the alu part is getting hot enough to un-attach itself from my superglue fixturing
11:13 PM XXCoder: hot metal can affect end result sizes so yeah need to fix that
11:13 PM ItsFlipp: cutter is pretty new
11:13 PM Tom_L: lack of coolant
11:13 PM XXCoder: got video?
11:14 PM ItsFlipp: running a 1/4" YG1 42 deg 2 flute
11:14 PM XXCoder: if nothing else you can spray wd40 on it
11:14 PM ItsFlipp: using a misting coolant setup (fogbuster)
11:14 PM ItsFlipp: no video ATM, but will try and get some next time
11:14 PM Tom_L: feed/speed wrong
11:14 PM ItsFlipp: s&f:
11:14 PM Tom_L: dull cutters
11:14 PM Tom_L: what type of mill
11:15 PM ItsFlipp: tormach 770m
11:15 PM Tom_L: what's the chip load?
11:15 PM ItsFlipp: 7400 rpm, 40 IPM, adaptive toolpath
11:15 PM ItsFlipp: IPT is 0.0027
11:15 PM ItsFlipp: DOC is ~.45 in
11:15 PM Tom_L: if it's gettin too hot lower the chip load
11:16 PM ItsFlipp: WOC is .0625, or 25% of D
11:16 PM Tom_L: what size cutter?
11:16 PM ItsFlipp: 0.25"
11:16 PM Tom_L: oh, .25
11:17 PM Tom_L: i've taken full cuts with .25 in 6061 with no issues
11:17 PM ItsFlipp: right?
11:17 PM ItsFlipp: Not sure exactly what's goin' on :C
11:17 PM ItsFlipp: I'm using mist coolant
11:17 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUDHCXu4Pwo
11:17 PM ItsFlipp: but it's obvious that the coolant is basically vaporizing on contact
11:18 PM ItsFlipp: (that's an entire other issue)
11:18 PM ItsFlipp: what's your DOC there?
11:18 PM Tom_L: i dunno
11:18 PM Tom_L: maybe 1/8"?
11:18 PM ItsFlipp: there's difference #1 then
11:19 PM ItsFlipp: I'm taking a pretty aggressive 0.45"
11:19 PM Tom_L: 4:37 will show you the cut
11:19 PM ItsFlipp: though GWizard suggests that my S&F are relatively on point for HSM
11:20 PM Tom_L: dull cutter
11:20 PM ItsFlipp: ha. making skate trucks? Making an esk8?
11:20 PM Tom_L: i don't remember
11:20 PM Tom_L: vanilla truck
11:20 PM ItsFlipp: ah. I'm workin' my way towards an esk8 at the moment. all done except for this frustrating bracket :)
11:20 PM Tom_L: my spindle limits my s/f rates
11:21 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Skate_truck/Skate_truck3.jpg
11:21 PM ItsFlipp: what's top RPM?
11:21 PM ItsFlipp: very nice
11:21 PM Tom_L: ~5k
11:22 PM ItsFlipp: still, not bad
11:22 PM ItsFlipp: 10k here, but that's only useful if I can get the dumb thing to not incinerate my parts :)
11:22 PM ItsFlipp: ha, I've got that exact vise too
11:22 PM Tom_L: pic was before i did the truck pivot holes
11:23 PM Tom_L: i like the vise
11:23 PM Tom_L: 4"?
11:26 PM ItsFlipp: yeah, I think it's a 4". maybe 5", but I think it's 4
11:26 PM Tom_L: S3500 F7 on the .250 em
11:26 PM ItsFlipp: done me well so far
11:26 PM Tom_L: the issue i had was the spindle motor getting hot
11:26 PM ItsFlipp: end mill coated? or bright HSS?
11:27 PM Tom_L: carbide
11:27 PM Tom_L: that's about all i use
11:28 PM Tom_L: when i built the mill i knew the spindle would be the limiting factor. i took it off the sherline this on replaced
11:31 PM Tom_L: HSM doesn't know the limits of your machine
11:31 PM Tom_L: rigidity plays an important factor in choosing the right S & F
11:32 PM ItsFlipp: True enough. This 770M is way more rigid than my g0704 I used to have
11:32 PM Tom_L: on mine i try to stay around .001 - .0015 IPT
11:32 PM ItsFlipp: ah. yeah, that's where I guess I'm a bit lost then
11:32 PM Tom_L: but there again it's a limit of the spindle motor and heat
11:32 PM ItsFlipp: I've seen people say "if you go less than ~0.0015 you'll burnish"
11:33 PM ItsFlipp: others say "never below 0.002"
11:33 PM Tom_L: does that part look burnished?
11:33 PM Tom_L: climb cut if possible
11:33 PM ItsFlipp: honestly, not sure. surface finish looks fine
11:33 PM ItsFlipp: yeah, climb cutting
11:34 PM Tom_L: i was using a .125 em for most of the profile
11:34 PM ItsFlipp: mfg specs suggest 6800 rpc @ 37 IPM, which translates to ~0.0027 IPT
11:34 PM Tom_L: so slow it down some
11:35 PM ItsFlipp: shouldn't the amount of heat transmitted to the part remain constant, assuming constant ipt?
11:36 PM XXCoder: ItsFlipp: you want heat of cutting to go to chip and buzz off
11:37 PM XXCoder: if its not doing that you need to change things
11:37 PM ItsFlipp: XXCoder: Agreed. Just trying to identify exactly what to change
11:38 PM ItsFlipp: still a bit new at this, so somewhat overwhelmed with the variables... heh
11:38 PM XXCoder: unfortunately its not steel of some form as you can see colors to see if youre at sweet speed and rpm match
11:38 PM XXCoder: alum dont change color
11:39 PM Tom_L: 6800 rpm / 20.4 ipm = .0015 chip load
11:40 PM Tom_L: 1.17 hp
11:40 PM ItsFlipp: XXCoder: aye, no blue/gold chips w/alu :C
11:40 PM ItsFlipp: tom_l: getting that from GWizard?
11:41 PM ItsFlipp: what's the WOC the 1.17 HP is based on
11:41 PM Tom_L: wait that was for a .5 cutter
11:42 PM Tom_L: fswizzard
11:42 PM Tom_L: i don't use it much, i set it in my cad cam
11:42 PM ItsFlipp: ah, okay
11:42 PM ItsFlipp: yeah, I was gonna say, that doesn't jive with what I'm seein O.o
11:44 PM Tom_L: i'm not used to the app. i seldom use it
11:44 PM Tom_L: but it's a good one
11:44 PM XXCoder: yo gloops
11:46 PM gloops: howdy
11:46 PM Tom_L: .38hp full width full depth cut
11:46 PM Tom_L: 6800 rpm 20.4 ipm
11:47 PM Tom_L: full depth meaning same as Diameter
11:48 PM Tom_L: i just think you're goin too fast with it
11:49 PM Tom_L: i generally try tu use a high helix cutter on aluminum if i have one
11:50 PM Wolf__: I somewhat hate aluminum, I try to use carbide rougher anytime I can on it
11:50 PM Tom_L: well ya if you have one :)
11:51 PM Wolf__: https://www.maritool.com/Cutting-Tools-End-Mills-Roughers-3-Flute-Carbide-45-deg-Helix/c78_79_93_198/index.html
11:51 PM Wolf__: I try to keep a couple in stock lol
11:52 PM Elmo40: i love the 3-flute carbide. less chatter than a 2-flute and almost as good a finish as a 4-flute. plus you can plunge with them.
11:53 PM Tom_L: a little harder to measure wear with them
11:55 PM Tom_L: i don't suppose anybody here uses smartcam
11:55 PM Wolf__: I mostly find that the roughers you dont need to have everything dialed in perfect and less issues of chip welding with alum
11:55 PM Tom_L: true
