02:22 AM Deejay: moin
02:32 AM Loetmichel: *GNAAAH*... this is taking forever... $me is milling 5 Dsub9 sized 7.2mm deep pockets into an 8mm thick alu plate to get the Plugs to stick out the front plate.... multipass 0,15mm depth of cut with a 2mm mill bit... yeeears later... :-)
03:23 AM miss0r: Loetmichel: hehe. sounds like a (s)turdy box :)
03:26 AM miss0r: morning, by the way
03:31 AM Loetmichel: miss0r: it is... http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=14769&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
03:31 AM Loetmichel: morning
03:31 AM miss0r: hehe
03:31 AM miss0r: looks good anyway :)
03:31 AM Loetmichel: just that it has 5 dsub plugs in the back now
03:32 AM Loetmichel: and the power switch moved to the front
03:32 AM Loetmichel: that keypad drawer is a PITA though ;)
03:33 AM Loetmichel: "metal-origami" ;)
03:33 AM miss0r: hehe
03:33 AM miss0r: I'm glad I don't do all of that sheet stuff
03:33 AM miss0r: I would be forced to kill myself :D
03:36 AM Loetmichel: looks nice finished though, front royal blue with engraced company logo in alu, rest black structured powder coat. (no pics, sorry)
03:36 AM miss0r: yeah, by then it is a somewhat *hush hush* case :)
03:37 AM Loetmichel: nope, its already that. just made no pictures of the last model painted
03:38 AM miss0r: ha.. alright :)
03:40 AM Loetmichel: the REAL *hushhush* is made white befor posting the pics
03:40 AM Loetmichel: or not posted at all ;)
03:41 AM miss0r: hehe. Yeah, doing what you do, you need to be carefull what to post :)
03:41 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=8854 <- like here ;)
03:42 AM miss0r: Indeed
03:48 AM Loetmichel: FINALLY... 5th Dsub done... now to the few 100 venting holes ;)
03:49 AM miss0r: lol
03:49 AM Loetmichel: ah, lie... still one to go
03:49 AM * Loetmichel should learn to count ;)
03:52 AM selroc: https://github.com/SebKuzminsky/pycam/issues/138
04:16 AM gambakufu: my estop button stopped working. it would seem $5 from aliexpress doesn't get you top of the line products.
04:19 AM Loetmichel: gambakufu: hihi, the one on my CNC 6040 driver box left the room entirely a few years ago
04:20 AM Loetmichel: the red mushroom head at least
04:20 AM gambakufu: I guess I'm lucky I found out while testing config stuff and not the hard way while actually machining.
04:22 AM XXCoder: yeah lol
04:24 AM Loetmichel: i never used it anyway
04:24 AM Loetmichel: not intentionally... it is in knee height though: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=14148&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
04:25 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17171 <. aaand there its gone ;)
04:25 AM Loetmichel: esc key works for me
04:26 AM XXCoder: wow didnt know your arm was so furry
04:26 AM gambakufu: that's some might thick armhair
04:26 AM gambakufu: :)
04:26 AM Loetmichel: ... also called "pertinax hair"
04:26 AM Loetmichel: :-)
04:26 AM Loetmichel: that vaccum table top is phenolic paper
04:28 AM Loetmichel: very funny though when you sit in front of the running machine and suddenly there is something red that jumps at you, bounces off and then flies across the room
04:28 AM Loetmichel: :-)
04:31 AM XXCoder: in least you didnt hit it :)
04:40 AM jthornton: morning
04:44 AM XXCoder: hey
04:44 AM XXCoder: yeah as result i have huge hospital bill. hey gloops
04:48 AM Loetmichel: as a result of WHAT?
04:49 AM XXCoder: nothing really it was joke to gloops
04:50 AM XXCoder: but it was auto rejoin aw
05:12 AM Tom_L: morning
05:21 AM jthornton: morning
05:21 AM XXCoder: yo
05:28 AM rmu: anybody know brother tapping centers? (TC2xx)? how do they hold up?
05:30 AM Loetmichel: *FINALLY* its milling the vent holes... only 3 more plates to go ;) -> https://youtu.be/f54xJU6YEPo
05:51 AM JesusAlos1 is now known as JesusAlos
07:02 AM XXCoder: I love myfordboy
07:02 AM XXCoder: he used 3d printer not to make stuff, but to make stuff to help make stuff
07:02 AM XXCoder: he used 3d printer to make pipe holder for lathe, then former
07:11 AM Loetmichel: soo, next Proxxon FBS230 (Dremel like tool) dead *sputter* *sputter* *sputter* *off*... those Proxxons are NOT really industrial grade. Thats the fourth i smoke the motor in 6 years here at the company. Always the brushes. they simply vanish ;)
07:27 AM miss0r: realy pleasantly surprised of the quality of a vertex BS-0 dividing head.
07:27 AM miss0r: I mean, it was *only* 525 pounds, and the thing looks and feels great
07:27 AM miss0r: not even too much leftover grinding schmoo
07:27 AM XXCoder: nice
07:28 AM miss0r: it actualy came here faster than the material I ordered to use it for :D even though I ordered the material locally last week.
07:29 AM miss0r: and I think I placed an order for the dividing head sunday
07:29 AM miss0r: conclussions; A) Realy fast dilevery from england. B) Realy slow delivery from my material supplyer or C) BOTH
07:29 AM miss0r: its C...
07:30 AM XXCoder: i still remember one time package from new york took 2 months to cross to washington state.
07:31 AM miss0r: well.. that one takes the cake
07:31 AM XXCoder: month in, I ordered same stuff but from other store. from other country, arrived in 4 days
07:32 AM miss0r: I hope you didn't need it in a hurry :D
07:59 AM jthornton: wow I'm transferring 4,644 files from my old web site to the new hosting site lol
07:59 AM jthornton: it's taken 3 days so far during free time
08:04 AM gregcnc: how much data?
08:18 AM jthornton: 3.1GB
08:19 AM jthornton: it went pretty slow today due to the rain messing up my sat connection
08:37 AM CaptHindsight: ice storm
08:42 AM MacGalempsy: first print with the new machine https://flic.kr/p/2eBLH36
09:08 AM * Loetmichel is a bit jittery right now... just downed a cup of espresso... about 10 to 15 shots worth (big coffee mug full of it)... MAAn that stuff is potent!
09:16 AM flyback: BMCC
09:17 AM TekniQue: canuck
09:49 AM gregcnc: loetmichel 0.5l + of espresso? I'd be dead...I think
09:49 AM Loetmichel: gregcnc: more like 0.2 to 0.3 liter
09:49 AM Loetmichel: but yes, the old pump noticed it ;)
09:53 AM gregcnc: ah espresso is ~25ml, seems like everyone serves a double in america
10:53 AM fragalot: 'sup
10:57 AM ziper: hi
11:41 AM JT-Shop: pcw_home: is there a bit file for a c11g and c10 for a 7i92 I assume they are both cnc4pc cards
11:53 AM rmaw: anyone know what kind of tumbler media would work well to buff and deburr a resin based plastic
11:55 AM jym: baking soda ???
11:55 AM jym: rock salt???
11:55 AM fragalot: jym: needs more question marks
11:55 AM jym: walnut husks???????
11:56 AM fragalot: There you go.
11:56 AM gregcnc: excellent
11:56 AM jym: fragalot: ??H??A??P??P??Y??
11:56 AM rmaw: well I have no idea
11:56 AM fragalot: extatic
11:56 AM rmaw: theres a ton of media to choose from
11:56 AM jym: rmaw: what material/resin?
11:58 AM jym is now known as Jymmm
12:02 PM rmaw: https://www.smooth-on.com/products/task-9/
12:02 PM rmaw: this stuff
12:03 PM rmaw: hopeing to use it for a small run instead of injection moulding
12:03 PM Jymmm: Ok, it's Polyurethane
12:03 PM rmaw: small parts though 25mm dia
12:04 PM rmaw: so I'm trying to find something to balance between polish up after demould without taking too much detail off
12:04 PM Jymmm: rmaw: Just FYI... I would suggest you look at M/SDS when considering any chemical
12:04 PM gloops: whats that for rmaw?
12:05 PM Jymmm: rmaw: maybe even rice??
12:05 PM rmaw: some plastic casings
12:05 PM rmaw: enclosures for a pcb
12:06 PM gloops: better with a hard polished mold if possible, and a gelcoat - negligible finishing
12:06 PM Jymmm: I'm wondering if rice wouldn't deburr AND polish at the same time
12:07 PM rmaw: there are some undercuts which makes a hard mould tricky for this size run
12:07 PM Jymmm: rmaw: It's also exothermic, be aware of thermal ex[antion too
12:08 PM Jymmm: and gonna smell nasty when curing
12:09 PM rmaw: yea, we've done a rubber test mould and I have some parts, just looking for a starting point to test with for polish
12:09 PM rmaw: I'll try with some rice for a few hours
12:09 PM Jymmm: rmaw: do you have a tumbler of sorts already?
12:10 PM Jymmm: rmaw: uncooked ;)
12:10 PM JT-Shop: rice hulls
12:10 PM rmaw: we've got a cheap tumbler
12:10 PM Jymmm: rmaw: do you have that resin already, I'm curious about it now
12:11 PM rmaw: we do, its from a previous job, so only a test
12:11 PM rmaw: you have to be on it to get into the chamber, goes off quite quick
12:11 PM Jymmm: rmaw: what do you like/dislike about it?
12:12 PM rmaw: its more brittle then I'd like, not to say it very brittle
12:12 PM rmaw: for these parts I'd like more flex
12:12 PM Jymmm: rmaw: you are still using a vacuum chamber with it?
12:12 PM rmaw: yea
12:12 PM Jymmm: ug
12:13 PM Jymmm: I saw someone use a hand torch
12:13 PM Jymmm: as air rises and all that
12:13 PM Jymmm: only took a second or two
12:15 PM fragalot: that's assuming the bubbles rise fast enough before it starts to set
12:16 PM Jymmm: Yeah
12:18 PM Jymmm: rmaw: That stuff has got to be expensive, just for an enclosure
12:20 PM Jymmm: rmaw: There is hamond too
12:23 PM gloops: i wouldnt cast for casings, id laminate
01:18 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.mcpond.com/
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.mcpond.com/machine/8 $20/hr VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER
01:21 PM CaptHindsight: how about tooling?
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: how do you bring your own programs?
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: says: Operator Included Yes
01:25 PM gloops: $500 a day on 3 shifts, 182500 a year
01:25 PM MarcelineVQ: 20$ an hour operator included, what
01:26 PM JT-Shop: damn I hate the stupid symlinks in the nc_files makes it fkin impossible to just copy the directory to another pc
01:26 PM skunkworks: yikes
01:26 PM gloops: machine cost? + rent for space + power/light
01:26 PM Tom_L: heh
01:26 PM Tom_L: are symlinks supposed to be handy for something?
01:27 PM Tom_L: 26°F and mist which makes nice ice
01:27 PM JT-Shop: beats the shit out of me it just a pain in the ass for me
01:28 PM Tom_L: i tried copying those once too :D
01:28 PM JT-Shop: and while I'm ranting I never understood why your forced to copy a sim to view it that is stupid
01:28 PM * Tom_L gives JT-Shop a soapbox to stand on
01:29 PM * JT-Shop might kick it lol
01:29 PM Tom_L: there's a number of things about linux i never understood..
01:31 PM JT-Shop: and that's another reason I like QtPyVCP it fixes some of the irritating stuff like DO YOU REALLY WANT TO QUIT? I know you pressed the exit button but maybe the cat did it are you sure?
01:31 PM Jymmm: rsync?
01:32 PM * JT-Shop says bye bye to ubuntu on the BP mill
01:39 PM Jymmm: https://superuser.com/questions/138587/how-to-copy-symbolic-links
01:46 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you gonna run stretch on it now?
01:46 PM roycroft: symlinks can be useful
01:47 PM roycroft: symlinks are far too easy to abuse, though *cough* sco *cough* solaris *cough
01:49 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop were you running wheezy on it previously?
01:49 PM JT-Shop: ubuntu 10.04
01:50 PM JT-Shop: running debian 9 now
01:50 PM Tom_L: stretch
01:50 PM cradek: that's what my big one still is too
01:50 PM Tom_L: you gotta run preempt-rt with that don't you?
01:50 PM JT-Shop: chnc is still ubuntu 10.04
01:51 PM JT-Shop: I don't think you have to but I do run preempt rt
01:51 PM Tom_L: i think i've got wheezy on mine
01:51 PM Tom_L: huh, i thought you had to use it
01:51 PM Tom_L: due to lack of RTAI suppor
01:51 PM Tom_L: t
01:52 PM skunkworks: I went to wheezy on the K&T a while back..
01:53 PM skunkworks: yes - if you need to run rtai - you need wheezy currently.
01:56 PM Tom_L: i'll probably keep it until i'm forced to switch
02:04 PM roycroft: wheezy is well beyond eos
02:04 PM roycroft: if your linuxcnc machine is not connected to the internet that's not a big deal
02:05 PM roycroft: but if it is one should not be running an ancient, unsupported operating system on it
02:05 PM * roycroft votes for not connecting any cnc controller to the internet
02:06 PM fragalot: tech enthousiast: my lightbulbs are controlled via my smartphone and my thermostat regulates via AI
02:06 PM fragalot: engineer: I have a loaded pistol in case my 2004 printer makes an unexpected noise
02:07 PM JT-Shop: I wonder what I had to do to get permission to grab the serial port for the vfd lol
02:07 PM cradek: probably put yourself in the dialout group
02:08 PM JT-Shop: that sounds familiar
02:08 PM cradek: % adduser myusername dialout
02:08 PM cradek: then log out and in
02:08 PM JT-Shop: thanks
02:18 PM gloops: my linuxcnc is not on the net, i dont want it on the net, an update could kill it
02:19 PM fragalot: lol
02:19 PM fragalot: its sad how true that is with a lot of production systems
02:25 PM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Packet-Of-Riffler-Files-21-Extra-Files-As-Photo/153349198348?
02:26 PM gloops: file for any situation
02:27 PM rmu: no production system should be directly connected to the internet
02:27 PM jdh: internete considered harmful?
02:28 PM rmu: yes
02:30 PM fragalot: since the hype around cloud based systems was introduced, i've never spent so much time trying to get basic shit to work again
02:30 PM JT-Shop: yea adding myself to dailout fixed the modbus now to figure out which serial port is the right one lol
02:31 PM fragalot: JT-Shop: that should be fairly easy if you know the modbus address of the drive you're talking to
02:31 PM JT-Shop: I have two ports I'll just try each one lol
02:32 PM fragalot: exactly -)
02:32 PM fragalot: :-)
02:35 PM rmu: fragalot: mick jagger got it right in angie
02:35 PM fragalot: ha
03:12 PM fragalot: oh this is a beauty. https://www.pandasecurity.com/mediacenter/mobile-news/facetime-bug/
03:34 PM Roguish: FACETIME MUST DIE
03:35 PM Jymmm: Roguish: Um, don't use it?
03:36 PM roycroft: what is facetime? :)
03:36 PM Roguish: that is an option.............no one forces us
03:36 PM Jymmm: roycroft: video conferencing
03:36 PM roycroft: i did something a day or two ago that caused a facetime window to pop up on my imac
03:36 PM roycroft: first time that's ever happened
03:37 PM roycroft: fortuantely, facetime demanded that i log into my icloud acount before it would do whatever it intended to do
03:37 PM roycroft: since i have no icloud account and never shall, i figure i'm pretty well-insulated from things facetimish
03:38 PM Jymmm: roycroft: I just toss tape over the camera =)
03:38 PM XXCoder: yeah I always cover camera in case there was a rootkit
03:39 PM roycroft: i have definitely put labels over my cameras on all my devices
03:39 PM roycroft: save the rear facing camera on my iphone
03:39 PM roycroft: however, there is still a built-in microphone
03:41 PM Jymmm: roycroft: true enough
03:45 PM fragalot: desolder the microphone
03:45 PM fragalot: its not like you use your phone for calling anymore anyway
03:45 PM fragalot: :D
03:46 PM Deejay: gn8
03:50 PM roycroft: 98% of my iphone usage is listening to music
03:50 PM roycroft: the other 2% is reluctantly conducting telephony operations
03:50 PM roycroft: all those apps that are on the phone are useless
03:51 PM roycroft: i use an ipad for portable apps
03:51 PM roycroft: the screen on an iphone is way too small for that stuff
04:07 PM rmu: fragalot: microphoneS
04:08 PM rmu: i think there is a howto-video by ed snowden
04:09 PM fragalot: good point
04:09 PM fragalot: bet someone clever managed to use data analysis on the accelerometers to pick up audio too
04:10 PM rmu: no that won't work
04:11 PM fragalot: given that Loetmichel is capable of viewing what's on your monitor from 100m away based on nothing but electrical noise.. I'm pretty sure that it is possible, even if you'd have to look deep within the noise floor of the data
04:11 PM fragalot: heck, LoRa is broadcasting its data well below the noise floor and somehow the messages still make it through
04:12 PM rmu: those MEMS accelerometers (at least those i know) are quite noisy, limited to about 1khz sample rate, at a resolution of 0,01m/s^2
04:13 PM fragalot: 1kHz is good enough
04:14 PM rmu: if you get useful data at 1 khz, but even if you keep those things at rest (in a quiet environmen) they fluctuate quite hefty
04:14 PM fragalot: thats where major data analysis comes into play
04:14 PM fragalot: i'm not saying it'd be easy
04:14 PM fragalot: or very reliable
04:14 PM fragalot: just not impossible
04:14 PM rmu: but it seems somebody already did it
04:15 PM rmu: https://www.engadget.com/2014/08/15/gyrophone-eavesdropping-hack/
04:15 PM fragalot: in 2014, and sensors have only gotten better since :P
04:15 PM fragalot: some people have even managed to get audio from video-only sources
04:16 PM rmu: https://www.reddit.com/r/electronics/comments/w8oca/using_an_accelerometer_as_a_microphone/
04:17 PM rmu: nevertheless i don't believe this really works to eavesdrop on people
04:17 PM fragalot: why wouldn't it, assuming you have full access to the device in question?
04:18 PM rmu: not enough SNR
04:19 PM fragalot: that's only a matter of getting very large data sets & a lot of time
04:19 PM rmu: with lora and gps you know something about the signal that allows you to discriminate it from the noise
04:21 PM rmu: lot of time and very large dataset seems unpractical for eavesdropping
04:22 PM fragalot: depends on how valuable the potential information is
04:24 PM rmu: then it will become "cheaper" to use a bat
04:24 PM fragalot: :p
04:24 PM MarcelineVQ: with everyone having smarttv's and alexa and cortana etc you don't even need to get clever with your monitoring sensors
04:25 PM rmu: exactly
04:25 PM fragalot: of course
04:25 PM fragalot: I'm just a fan of creativity >.>
04:25 PM MarcelineVQ: well sure, that's the tagline of the channel :>
04:26 PM fragalot: up next: use raw data from your harddisks' magnetic sensor thingymajigger to measure audio vibrations
04:26 PM rmu: for the real secret stuff i go into the basement into the copper-clad concrete bomb shelter. no phones or any kind of electricity except flashlights allowed there.
04:27 PM fragalot: rmu: flashlights?
04:27 PM fragalot: did you not know that some batteries have memory effect???
04:27 PM rmu: hehehe
04:27 PM fragalot: rookie mistake right there
04:28 PM rmu: and those head-lamps could do EEG covertyl, read your brain
04:29 PM rmu: given enough sample data and time they could discriminate if i think of red or white wine when looking at the wine rack ;)
04:29 PM fragalot: based on your electricity consumption
04:29 PM fragalot: "oh he opened the fridge"
04:31 PM rmu: "and now the pre-checkin testsuite is running"
04:35 PM * Jymmm looks at channel name, Nope not #conspiracytheory ;)
04:35 PM fragalot: it's not a theory! *crinkles tin foil hat*
04:36 PM jthornton: hmm I had a copy of the probe routines that someone wrote I think cradek wrote them now I can't find them
04:37 PM Jymmm: fragalot: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/26/opinion/cellphones-security-spying.html
04:39 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: because most people just don't care
04:39 PM CaptHindsight: even when made aware
04:39 PM Jymmm: jthornton: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuration/29187-work-with-probe
04:40 PM fragalot: interesting, my 3D printer now has a very audible alarm that it has finished
04:40 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Which is the biggest thing of them all
04:40 PM fragalot: (the bit hitting my homing sensor appears to ahve broken off so it just hit the end of travel & heavilly vibrated as it lost steps)
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: you could make getting shot in the head a status symbol and people would fight to be first in line
04:41 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: only for the PC purpose,
04:42 PM Jymmm: jthornton: lol, blame chris for the broken link... https://sourceforge.net/p/emc/mailman/message/27739832/
04:43 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: which version Yoda head did you make? :)
04:43 PM rmu: most people volunteer everything there is to know about them to facebook
04:43 PM Jymmm: jthornton: https://github.com/araisrobo/linuxcnc/blob/master/nc_files/smartprobe.ngc
04:43 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: hehe. printed some new plastic drawer runners to replace a set that broke after 20yrs of service
04:44 PM Jymmm: rmu: You forget Google, a commercial division of the NSA
04:44 PM jthornton: na smartprobe.ngc is a surface probe routine
04:45 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: have you been deputized? Please signify by not answering since you are under a gag order.
04:46 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Hrmurmurumhmmm
04:51 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsightFor the record, any gag order I'e had expired long ago
04:55 PM jthornton: close as I came to finding them again was The requested URL /cradek-files/01262579508/P-back.ngc was not found on this server.
05:03 PM jthornton: dang I have dozens of probe files adapted from chris radek but can't find the originals
05:07 PM Jymmm: jthornton: https://web.archive.org/web/20180410124842/http://timeguy.com/cradek/01262579508

05:11 PM jthornton: awesome
05:14 PM _unreal_: why Thats no flood. Thats a tsunami
05:14 PM jthornton: got them all saved now thanks Jymmm
05:15 PM Jymmm: jthornton: glad I could help =)
05:15 PM Jymmm: _unreal_: Hey, I gave warning and tried to save jthorntonsoem bandwidth =)
05:16 PM * jthornton goes to do a bed check in the coop
05:22 PM jthornton: Jymmm: that is just awesome!
05:23 PM Jymmm: jthornton: whats that?
05:25 PM jthornton: you finding cradek probing files
05:26 PM Jymmm: jthornton: Oh, no worries, I hate when crap liek that happens so frustrating, then I know your only have 50% bandwidth left, that that just bites
05:31 PM jthornton: 46% left lol but I'm gaining
05:32 PM Jymmm: haha
05:38 PM Tom_L: jthornton, i keep a copy of those on my site as a backup as well
05:43 PM jthornton: good to know
05:46 PM Tom_L: someone should just add them to the iso
05:54 PM rmu: https://github.com/verser-git/probe_screen_v2
06:56 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: did you find the bandwidth hog?
07:55 PM norias: heat treating is more complicated than i expected
08:13 PM infornography: that is how most things turn out
08:17 PM norias: brain hurts
08:41 PM Tom_itx: norias what are you heat treating?
08:43 PM norias: a few things
08:43 PM norias: springs steels
08:43 PM norias: tool steels
08:43 PM norias: mostly
08:43 PM norias: 6150, H13
08:44 PM norias: i'm mostly concerned with H13 at this point
08:46 PM Tom_itx: http://www.crucible.com/PDFs/DataSheets2010/dsNuDieVH13v12010.pdf
08:47 PM Tom_itx: details
08:48 PM norias: thanks
08:50 PM Tom_itx: or do it the ghetto way and heat it to a cherry red and dip it in oil
08:51 PM norias: yeah, ghetto way is not going to work
08:51 PM Tom_itx: then you need a good oven and a timer
08:51 PM norias: yeah
09:42 PM skunkworks: andy would be a good resource for heat treating I bet
09:45 PM CaptHindsight: i have a heat treater 300ft from me, big induction stuff
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: always smells like burned metal at night when the winds come from that direction
09:46 PM CaptHindsight: think electrical fire
10:26 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: you wired it backwards?
10:28 PM Tom_itx: 23°F with sleet / hail & lightening
10:28 PM Tom_itx: weird
10:28 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: AC battery?
10:29 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: coconut battery ka gilligans island???
10:29 PM Jymmm: Tom_itx: you poor bastard
10:29 PM Jymmm: aka*
10:30 PM Tom_itx: you in so-cal?
10:30 PM Tom_itx: what's it like there?
10:30 PM Tom_itx: err you're furthere north i think..
10:31 PM Jymmm: Tom_itx: NorCal, #campfire
10:32 PM Jymmm: Tom_itx: I'm in the forest, ~2500ft elevation
10:34 PM roycroft: jymmm is in way-nocal
10:34 PM roycroft: it's a different universe from socal
10:34 PM Tom_itx: the whole of Ca is a different universe
10:34 PM Tom_itx: serious thunder here...
10:36 PM Jymmm: roycroft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Fire_(2018)
10:36 PM roycroft: we have a dusting of snow in rhe forecast for later this week
10:36 PM roycroft: we had a wee bit tuesday morning
10:37 PM roycroft: i'm well acquainted with the camp fire, jymmm
10:37 PM Jymmm: roycroft: the fire moved a football field per second
10:38 PM roycroft: we had some really bad fires last year, but nothing like the camp fire
10:38 PM roycroft: what's really sad is that there is no longer a "fire season" in cali
10:38 PM CaptHindsight: we are back to 0F on Friday :(
10:38 PM roycroft: there are fires year-round now
10:38 PM roycroft: we're forecast to get down to -4c tonight
10:39 PM roycroft: in fact, it's forecast to get below freezing most nights over the next week
10:39 PM roycroft: very unseasonably cold
10:41 PM CaptHindsight: we were just at 50F
10:41 PM CaptHindsight: we just swing back and forth every week now
10:42 PM CaptHindsight: +20F warmer than average to -20F than
10:42 PM CaptHindsight: ice storm yesterday and night
10:42 PM CaptHindsight: every branch and twig had a layer of ice, lasted all day
10:42 PM CaptHindsight: looked like scifi
10:43 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: why did the fire move a football field?
10:44 PM CaptHindsight: how many do you have?
10:48 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: 150,000 acres worth
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: hoe close was that fire to you?
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: how
10:49 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: 2 miles
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: did you evacuate?
10:49 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Well, could be less depending with direction
10:49 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Oh hell yes.
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: how long were you gone from home?
10:50 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: over a month
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: wow
10:50 PM Jymmm: had to sneak back in twice
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: so you had a little bit of info that your place was safe
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: still safe
10:51 PM Jymmm: sat thermal image maps
10:51 PM Jymmm: *live
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: did surrounding the lot with a urine moat work?
10:52 PM roycroft: don't forget to rake your forest in the spring, jymmm
10:52 PM Jymmm: The fire was very strange... some places took out like 40 houses, then one standing in perfect condtion,
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: saw that on the news
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: was it due to the construction of the home or just the fire direction/wind luck?
10:53 PM Jymmm: The hardest part for me was getting past chp and national guard road blocks
10:54 PM roycroft: fires are like tornados in that respect
10:54 PM CaptHindsight: what story did you use?
10:54 PM Jymmm: No, that's whats strange , the places that were still standing had ZERO damage at all.
10:54 PM Jymmm: The trusth, and brought donuts (for real)
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: how far past the road blocks was your home?
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: heard they were shooting looters
10:55 PM Jymmm: I had to hike in the first time (wasn't aware of the SECOND roadblock), got caught by sherrrifs' then they actually drove me the rest of the way
10:56 PM CaptHindsight: oh nice
10:56 PM roycroft: that was nice of them
10:56 PM roycroft: and they could keep an eye on you
10:56 PM Jymmm: Yeah, saved me the last two miles
10:56 PM Jymmm: Nope, they left me
10:56 PM CaptHindsight: how far was the fire at time from you?
10:57 PM CaptHindsight: hike through smoke?
10:57 PM Jymmm: It came in the back road, which was a green zone, bordered by red zone (where I needed to go),
10:58 PM Jymmm: No, it was "safe" (fire/smoke wise), they just were restrting access
10:58 PM Jymmm: restricting, to prevent looters mostly
10:59 PM Jymmm: but needed to get meds that were at the house
10:59 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: how are the house projects? electrical, salt heat storage etc
11:00 PM Jymmm: the second time, came across a lost CHP, so lead him across 16 miles of dirt roads to where he needed to be. So he just truened his back and let us through, no hiking YAY!!!
11:01 PM Jymmm: Electrical is all done.
11:02 PM Jymmm: Heat, eh, still working on that currently, not having much luck in gettong from 1400F to 140F in the confined space
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: hot tub
11:03 PM Jymmm: not "drop" but "absorbtion"
11:04 PM Jymmm: aka thermal storage/extraction
11:04 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Got a solid copper stove you can spare?
11:04 PM Jymmm: lol
11:05 PM CaptHindsight: maybe 20lbs in pennies
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: ok I'm off
11:06 PM Tom_itx: makes good ballast
11:06 PM Tom_itx: for machining hollow parts
11:07 PM Tom_itx: the bank was a little pissed when we returned them with coolant all over em
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: Paraffin wax is an excellent material for storing heat, with a specific heat capacity of 2.14–2.9 J g−1 K−1 (joules per gram kelvin) and a heat of fusion of 200–220 J g−1.
11:16 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Yes, but not at 1400, wich is why I need it lower
11:16 PM CaptHindsight: Flash point 200–240 °C (392–464 °F;
11:16 PM CaptHindsight: boom go
11:16 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: I already has a source for 50lb boxes of wax
11:16 PM CaptHindsight: really big bees?
11:16 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: refinery plant, can get wax by the tanker full if I wanted
11:17 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: But, the issue I have is the thermal absorption rate
11:18 PM CaptHindsight: if forget the project details, but I'm off to bed
11:18 PM CaptHindsight: hasta banana
11:18 PM Jymmm: I want/need flue gas temps around 140F at exit
11:18 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: gnight
