01:47 AM Deejay: moin
04:13 AM jthornton: morning
04:23 AM XXCoder: morning
04:25 AM jthornton: yea I think I finally got the chicken door input interference solved
04:26 AM XXCoder: what was happening?
04:29 AM jthornton: I think the motor was making interference on the door switch inputs
04:30 AM XXCoder: oh emf fun
04:30 AM XXCoder: so you just added some sheilding?
04:30 AM jthornton: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/WbxgrXc6S3/
04:31 AM jthornton: that function runs every 1/10 second so I just counted to 5 before accepting the input
04:31 AM XXCoder: debouncing
04:32 AM jthornton: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/k3W6sbzMcw/
04:32 AM jthornton: that's the whole function that gets called every 1/10 second
04:33 AM XXCoder: pretty strightforward it seems to me
04:36 AM jthornton: hmm my raspberry pi zero loses signal in the nest box... so much for that plan
05:49 AM jthornton: looks like the cage wire around the run blocks the wifi signal :(
05:58 AM jdh: you keep your chicks in a faraday cage
05:58 AM Jymmmmmm: haha
05:58 AM Jymmmmmm: who was looking at the GDP... https://ubuntu-mate.org/gpd-pocket/
06:02 AM XXCoder: Jymmmmmm: i did consider it
06:02 AM XXCoder: but honestly i dont need portable computing very often
06:02 AM XXCoder: maybe in future when I need one at shop
06:03 AM Jymmmmmm: XXCoder: Yeah, it's that article that made me discover it, but just too much for what it is IMO
06:03 AM XXCoder: compact design do need bit more money but for me maybe $300 is fine but 700 or so
06:04 AM XXCoder: nah
06:04 AM XXCoder: ebay has bunch of em
06:05 AM Jymmmmmm: Plus you can run chrome and linux concurrently on a chromebook for much cheaper =)
06:06 AM XXCoder: i kinda wanted windows also for windows onlp programs
06:06 AM XXCoder: theres so many :(
06:06 AM Jymmmmmm: vbox???
06:06 AM Jymmmmmm: wine?
06:06 AM XXCoder: is gpd powerful enough for vbox?
06:06 AM XXCoder: or chromebook
06:07 AM XXCoder: whats windows license like now anyway
06:07 AM XXCoder: havent looked up since windows 7
06:07 AM Jymmmmmm: Not sure, some chromebooks come with i3-i5 cpu's
06:09 AM jdh: pixel has i7
06:09 AM XXCoder: 139 bucks apparently for windows 10 home
06:09 AM XXCoder: yeah right
06:10 AM XXCoder: pixel 2 isnt too expensive 400 bucks or so for pretty good laptop
06:11 AM XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsng-Chromebook-11-6-Inch-1-7GHz-2GB-RAM-16GB-SSD-HDMI-Port/323669643820?epid=134437984
06:11 AM XXCoder: lol chromebook 30 bucks
06:12 AM XXCoder: "Samsung Exynos 5 processor (ARM-based CPU)" yeeah
06:12 AM XXCoder: probably why theres tons of em dumped into ebay
06:16 AM XXCoder: Jymmmmmm: thanks for reminding me of chrome. when I need one ill just buy one for sub-50 bucks lol so many choices
06:18 AM XXCoder: i5 is sub-$300 which is cheap enough also
06:19 AM XXCoder: i3 is strangely more expensive.
06:35 AM Jymmmmmm: XXCoder: hang on...
06:39 AM XXCoder: Jymmmmmm: ok but not for long
06:39 AM Jymmmmmm: XXCoder: This was very nice https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-15-6-chromebook-intel-celeron-4gb-memory-16gb-emmc-flash-memory-granite-gray/6170703.p?skuId=6170703
06:39 AM Jymmmmmm: celeron, but still very nice performance wise, even when playing videos
06:39 AM XXCoder: not too bad
06:39 AM XXCoder: saw some of those for sub 100 on ebay
06:40 AM Jymmmmmm: I was VERY impressed with it, and if you knew me, you know that I'm not easily impressed with things.
06:41 AM Jymmmmmm: XXCoder: And it has pretty good reviews too
06:42 AM XXCoder: i geuss theres guides to put linux on it
06:43 AM Jymmmmmm: True, but there is an option to enable linux on it already
06:43 AM Jymmmmmm: within the "developer tools" iirc
06:43 AM Jymmmmmm: it's not ubuntu, etc but does give you shell
06:44 AM XXCoder: hmm ok
06:44 AM XXCoder: its probably good enough for irc and such
06:44 AM Jymmmmmm: Yeah, if worse case, you can always restore the system back to factory
06:45 AM Jymmmmmm: there is a USB image you can download as well in case you REALLY fuck it up =)
06:46 AM XXCoder: lol ok
06:46 AM Jymmmmmm: It's on asus website fyi
06:48 AM Jymmmmmm: I was extremely disappointed int ehvery first chromebook I played with, that one I was impressed with though. Changed my perspective of chromeOS
06:49 AM XXCoder: ya chromebooks werent too impressive at start
06:49 AM Jymmmmmm: Well, I'm talking about a year prior, not the VERY FIRST ones.
06:52 AM XXCoder: lol ok got that impression when you said at start :)
06:57 AM Jymmmmmm: Doing SysAdmin for so many years, I came across a LOT of crappy hardware/systems, and drove off a LOT of salesmen from big ass sales contracts =)
06:58 AM XXCoder: thats good :)
06:59 AM XXCoder: I gather you dont have PHB
06:59 AM Jymmmmmm: PHB??
06:59 AM XXCoder: pointy haired boss
07:00 AM Jymmmmmm: nah
07:00 AM XXCoder: nice
07:00 AM Jymmmmmm: no sticks up butts tyvm
07:00 AM XXCoder: SUBs
07:00 AM Jymmmmmm: lmao
07:00 AM XXCoder: SUB subs :P
07:01 AM Jymmmmmm: nope, just wouldn't get along with those types in the least.
07:02 AM XXCoder: :)
07:03 AM Jymmmmmm: Had one CEO that thought his was the best way of doing things.... Wanted a $500K video conferencing system, we (the IT) said fuck that, and put up a $40K one instead =)
07:03 AM XXCoder: nd bought few new cars? lol
07:03 AM Jymmmmmm: and it was better then what he wanted
07:04 AM Jymmmmmm: Nah, but did get a couple nice toys to "evaluate" ;)
07:04 AM XXCoder: lol ok
07:05 AM Jymmmmmm: I'm liking Ubuntu Mate, couple little things I have to tweek, but that's preferences mostly.
07:07 AM Jymmmmmm: think I found one tiny bug, haven't researched that yet, but sure beats standard ubuntu.
07:08 AM XXCoder: nice. been using xfce mint for few years
07:08 AM XXCoder: what does mate change compared to stock ubuntu
07:18 AM beachbumpete1: Morning :)
07:29 AM jthornton: morning
07:46 AM jdh: I want to measure voltage on my tig PS into a load bank. will it toast my shiny new fluke if I just read directly fromthe terminals?
07:52 AM pcw_home: If it has HF start your Fluke will be landfill
09:13 AM alex_joni: jdh: put it to non-HF mode first
09:13 AM alex_joni: most TIG machines have electrode mode, where they surely have no HF
09:24 AM Deejay: re
09:42 AM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA7UU93ycL8
09:46 AM skunkworks: alex_joni: ! hi! kids are 6 and 3... Time is flying
09:55 AM {HD}: Anyone rocking fusion 360? I cannot import a sketch to scale for the life of me. I have a part that is completly flat so I scanned it on a bed scanner. I have turned that into a svg, dxf, pdf, tif, jpg and everyone I import into fusion is a different size.
09:58 AM HighInBC: it has been a while
09:58 AM HighInBC: but you want to import it first, then calibrate the size
10:00 AM HighInBC: I forgot the exact command but you don't do it at the time of importing, rather through a size constraint in the sketch itself
10:01 AM HighInBC: this covers it https://www.linkedin.com/learning/fusion-360-essential-training/importing-and-calibrating-your-canvas
10:01 AM HighInBC: ah right click on sketch, select "calibrate"
10:14 AM alex_joni: skunkworks: 9 here ;)
10:18 AM {HD}: HighInBC: but why can I just import to scale? A tif, pdf, svg all have accurate size data so just use that.
10:19 AM HighInBC: {HD}: I can't tell you why they did it that way
10:19 AM HighInBC: but that is how you do it
10:20 AM {HD}: wack. okay I will give it a shot
10:20 AM HighInBC: just calibrate off a known point
10:20 AM HighInBC: I think they do it that way so you can handle hand drawn stuff
10:20 AM gregcnc: can't you just set it 1:1?
10:20 AM gregcnc: or 100%
10:21 AM {HD}: gregcnc: I would like to. I don't see an option for that.
10:23 AM {HD}: https://i.imgur.com/IKj1oAD.jpg
10:23 AM {HD}: Those are my “attach canvas” options
10:23 AM HighInBC: did you look at the video I linked?
10:23 AM HighInBC: attach the canvas first
10:24 AM HighInBC: then right click on it in the menu to the left
10:24 AM HighInBC: select calibrate
10:25 AM {HD}: Yea, I saw that and I can do that. But, seems silly if I have already taken the time to do a scale drawing to have to.
10:25 AM HighInBC: it is not the only odd work flow in fusion 360
10:26 AM HighInBC: I think it wants a separate action for the timeline for ease of editing late
10:26 AM HighInBC: r
10:31 AM gregcnc: yeah, ridiculous it scales to the face you select initally
11:02 AM MarkusBec: pcw_home: are you around?
11:08 AM pcw_home: yep
11:09 AM MarkusBec: i have a problem
11:09 AM pcw_home: bye
11:09 AM JT-Shop: lol
11:10 AM MarkusBec: i want to use a 7i96 with a 7I85S and pkt uart
11:10 AM pcw_home: OK...
11:11 AM MarkusBec: i tryed to build a firmware with ise but even can not build a default config
11:12 AM pcw_home: what error do you get?
11:14 AM pcw_home: (also be sure to fetch the source _now_ as I've just recently fixed some missing sources in the project files)
11:16 AM MarkusBec: it can not finde the file for the card
11:17 AM MarkusBec: i used the download zip
11:17 AM pcw_home: which zip?
11:18 AM MarkusBec: http://www.mesanet.com/software/parallel/7i96.zip
11:24 AM MarkusBec: maybe i just doing it wrong but its hard to find informations
11:25 AM pcw_home: let me try... hmm builds for me with the current source
11:28 AM pcw_home: what actual error do you get?
11:28 AM pcw_home: (also I just updated a couple of days ago so make sure you re-fetch)
11:30 AM pcw_home: (just built 7i96D.bit using ISE 14.7, seveni96.xise, PIN_7I96D_51.vhd, i96_x9card)
11:36 AM MarkusBec: ok i will try that
11:36 AM MarkusBec: were can i find the new version
11:37 AM pcw_home: ( the project file is from ISE 13.3 so ISE14.7 will ask you to migrate ( say yes ))
11:37 AM pcw_home: any version 13.3 or > should be OK
11:39 AM pcw_home: really old versions ( like 9.x used for our old Spartan2 stuff ) will not work since they don't support Spartan6
11:39 AM pcw_home: 14.7 is a free (though huge) download from Xilinx
11:39 AM pcw_home: and requires registration
11:47 AM MarkusBec: yes i have 14.7
12:18 PM MarkusBec: pcw_home: Where can i download the new version
01:12 PM jdh: my fluke survived. load bank cal doesn't do HF
01:28 PM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CNC-Engraving-Machine-Router-Rotational-Rotary-Axis-A-Axis-4th-Axis-100MM-Chuck/283282307197?
01:28 PM gloops: this has to be a con
01:28 PM gloops: ahh no..lol
01:50 PM jthornton: pretty cheap
01:53 PM gloops: i thought the whole thing was £12.50 lol
01:57 PM jthornton: is it just the chuck?
01:57 PM fragalot: driver
01:58 PM jthornton: Note : This listing include the rotary axis +tailstock+stepper drive, rotary axis +tailstock ,rotary axis only, tailstock only, stepper drive only, please select the correct one you need.
01:59 PM jthornton: ah I see you have to 'select' something above the quantity
02:02 PM fragalot: yup
02:02 PM fragalot: hate it when sellers do that
02:03 PM jthornton: that is confusing for sure
02:03 PM fragalot: reel you in with the cheapest item possible, and every other option is 10x the price
02:05 PM rmu: the default price is just empty package and shipping?
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: disingenuous article or company? https://static01.nyt.com/images/2019/01/29/business/29apple03/merlin_149907615_081b52df-cc8b-4781-b317-d0a5812fea7f-superJumbo.jpg?quality=90&auto=webp
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: https://mashable.com/article/apple-mac-pro-screw/#45G45K5LraqK
02:07 PM fragalot: why not both?
02:07 PM sensille: Loetmichel: do you add anything to the cooling water for the spindle?
02:08 PM CaptHindsight: avg 5 minutes to make that screw?
02:08 PM Loetmichel: sensille: ~50% IPA
02:08 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: you don't know what tolerance specs are on that screw
02:08 PM Loetmichel: but aluminium car radiator fluid works, too
02:09 PM sensille: the water circulating in the spindle?
02:09 PM sensille: what, 50%?
02:10 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: it was probably the security feature in the head
02:10 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: 3D adaptive toolpaths to the rescue!
02:10 PM CaptHindsight: 11 sided left handed polygon
02:11 PM CaptHindsight: pretty much debunked in the Slashdot comments https://apple.slashdot.org/story/19/01/28/1532241/a-tiny-screw-shows-why-iphones-wont-be-assembled-in-usa
02:13 PM sensille: Loetmichel: i thought i might have to add some anti-corrisive, at most
02:13 PM Loetmichel: nope, just something to prevent a biofilm from growing
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: sensille: use DI water not tap water
02:13 PM Loetmichel: it clogs up the spindle pretty quick
02:14 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: unless sensille: lives in a place where the water crumbles out of the tap he can use tap water
02:15 PM fragalot: speaking of biofilms
02:15 PM Loetmichel: a bit of calcium isnt going to do much
02:15 PM fragalot: anyone got some suggestions on dealing with that?
02:15 PM Loetmichel: but honestly: if you are worried about corrosion: use a 50;50 mix of car radiator fluid for aluminium blocks and water
02:15 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: what are you trying to grow?
02:15 PM fragalot: the schaublin has a leaky gearbox when running, which drips directly into the coolant tank, and there's a lot of little tiny critters that appear to LOVE that emulsion
02:15 PM sensille: now i frightened i already ruined something
02:16 PM Loetmichel: it has corrosion inhibiotors of the right kind, its properly poisonus to microorganisms AND also prevents freezing ;)
02:16 PM fragalot: "Ah, there's the problem. If they wanted to receive screws, they were supposed to buy them from RX, not TX."
02:16 PM fragalot: ha
02:17 PM sensille: Loetmichel: i wasn't really worried yet, whatever you do is probably the right thing :)
02:17 PM Loetmichel: sensille: takes a week or so to grow that biofilm
02:17 PM Loetmichel: not to be worried
02:17 PM sensille: but isn't IPA expensive?
02:17 PM sensille: like 5L of it
02:17 PM fragalot: not if you buy in bulk
02:17 PM Loetmichel: and if you have a clogged spindle already: 8 bvar compressed air takes usually care of that
02:17 PM * fragalot buys it in 24 bottles of 1l
02:17 PM Loetmichel: just wear eye protaction, its a MESS ;)
02:18 PM Loetmichel: sensille: define "expensive"
02:18 PM rmu: IPA is a fire hazard
02:18 PM Loetmichel: i pay about 8 eur per liter
02:18 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: that's a lot
02:18 PM Loetmichel: rmu: so are many things. your point being?
02:18 PM sensille: and you put 5l in the bucket, with 5l water?
02:19 PM sensille: and change how often?
02:19 PM Loetmichel: its only a 5 liter bucket. so 2,5l and 2,5 liter
02:19 PM Loetmichel: and usually a few drops of water colour
02:19 PM Loetmichel: so i see leaks early
02:19 PM rmu: it can explode. vapor pressure would be quite high when cooling a spindle. i would use something like antifreeze
02:19 PM sensille: rmu: even in a 50:50 mix?
02:19 PM Loetmichel: rmu: man, i cool the workpiece with pire IPA
02:20 PM Loetmichel: pure
02:20 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: I buy it here. https://www.deoplosmiddelspecialist.nl/kopen/isopropylalcohol
02:20 PM Loetmichel: it doesent ignite that easily
02:20 PM sensille: ok, 10l for 26 euro. i'd expected it to be far more expensive
02:20 PM Loetmichel: especially not in a 50% mix with water in a CLOSED spindle coolant system
02:20 PM rmu: Loetmichel: as long as nobody knows ans nothing happens it is ok
02:21 PM sensille: Loetmichel: and how often do you change it?
02:21 PM Loetmichel: rmu: the only way to ignite it is to have pretty substantial sparks when the "flower pump" mists it onto the workpiece
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: nah stream water from the Rockies, glycol from your e-cigs and rubbing alcohol from your masseuses
02:21 PM Loetmichel: i toired, you cant even ignite it with a lit cigarette: if you spray the pure alcohol at the glowing tip it just douses it
02:22 PM Loetmichel: sensille: about every year or so
02:22 PM sensille: ok, that's not expensive than. i just let my wife buy it :)
02:22 PM Loetmichel: but as i said: last time i used Aluminium block radiator fluid. works even better and is less expensive
02:23 PM rmu: Loetmichel: you can ignite the vapors quite easily, a spark from static electricity is suffdicient
02:23 PM rmu: esp bad if you are machining thermoplastics
02:23 PM Loetmichel: yes, an electric spark is hot enought
02:23 PM Loetmichel: -t
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: sure sound s lot like antifreeze/collant
02:23 PM Loetmichel: a cigarette isnt
02:23 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: indeed, the car radiater stuff
02:24 PM Loetmichel: but the one thats meant for aluminium blocks (red here in germany), not the stuff for steel blocks (green)
02:24 PM sensille: loetmichel: like that? https://www.amazon.de/dp/B008UONY24
02:24 PM Loetmichel: sensille: yes
02:24 PM CaptHindsight: ethylene glycol vs propylene glycol
02:24 PM sensille: also 50:50?
02:24 PM Loetmichel: but 1-2 liters are enough for a 5 liter canister of cooling fluid
02:25 PM sensille: ok, thanks
02:25 PM Loetmichel: its just for corrosion inhibition and make it poisonus for the microorganisms
02:25 PM * fragalot is wondering if adding a fish tank bubbler to his coolant tank would help
02:26 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: to get rid of anything that is edible in your coolant tank: yes ;)
02:26 PM CaptHindsight: Anna Robic bacteria
02:26 PM Loetmichel: to get rid of the "foul smelling bacteria: probably lont ;)
02:26 PM rmu: in theory, depending on concentration, your spindle would need atex-label and be explosion proof to be cooled with IPA ;)
02:26 PM Loetmichel: not
02:26 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: it's not smelling bad, it's just blooming atm :P
02:27 PM Loetmichel: rmu: as said above: the spindles are closed loop
02:27 PM Loetmichel: so there is no ignition source inside the coolant, also not enough oxygen to burn
02:27 PM Loetmichel: or should i say: "semi closed loop"
02:28 PM rmu: but it could leak
02:28 PM sensille: but ... 50:50?
02:28 PM Loetmichel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9Ov69t0uwo <- thats my setup at home. the one at the company is quite similar
02:28 PM rmu: just saying. everybody is old enough to make their own bad decisions ;)
02:28 PM Loetmichel: thats why i put red paint in it
02:28 PM sensille: make it 40:60, and it won't burn
02:28 PM Loetmichel: red dye
02:28 PM Loetmichel: so i see if it leaks
02:29 PM Loetmichel: also the IPA will just evaporate if the leak is small
02:29 PM rmu: lower explosion limit is 2% vapor @ 10°C or so
02:29 PM Loetmichel: and if its large you have other problems than fire
02:29 PM Loetmichel: its also only 50% mixed with water and wouldnt ignite even with a flame
02:29 PM Loetmichel: i tried
02:30 PM Loetmichel: its a workshop. not an enclosed space
02:30 PM Loetmichel: NO chance to get to 2% vapor in the air
02:30 PM rmu: Loetmichel: ever seen a dust explosion?
02:30 PM Loetmichel: rmu: yes.
02:30 PM Loetmichel: and it doesent happen under normal circumstances
02:30 PM rmu: the 2% need to be locally where the spark is. a few g are sufficient to cause trouble
02:31 PM Loetmichel: you have to ACTIVELY get the dust into the air, have an ENCLOSED VOLUME whre it cant escape AND a sufficient source of ignition
02:31 PM rmu: i managed to make a whole workbench "explode" with a spark from unplugging a (spinning) motor
02:32 PM rmu: small ipa explosion -> disturbs/agitates dust -> dust explodes
02:32 PM Loetmichel: rmu: i give up. play the safety sally all you want, i cant be bothered to argue with THAT much fear.
02:32 PM rmu: that has nothing to do with fear
02:32 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: you do not need an enclosed volume for a dust explosion
02:33 PM rmu: esp. if antifree works perfectly fine and is MUCH less of a fire and explosion hazard
02:34 PM rmu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiCTODATdxA
02:34 PM CaptHindsight: what if you like danger?
02:34 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: you need a dense enough mix.
02:34 PM Loetmichel: in a not enclosed volume thats pretty unlikely to happen
02:34 PM sensille: i go for antifreeze :)
02:35 PM Loetmichel: and even then its no explosion, just a deflagration
02:35 PM Loetmichel: flame speed isnt high enough
02:35 PM fragalot: either way not pleasant :µP
02:35 PM Loetmichel: to qualify
02:35 PM CaptHindsight: danger --> fear --> adrenaline --> alertness --> productivity
02:35 PM rmu: if you like danger you should take "ether" (ch3-0-ch3)
02:35 PM sensille: CaptHindsight: :)
02:36 PM Loetmichel: sawdust "explosions" are unpleasant with normal workshop amounts and expensive because you may need new window glasses. thats about it
02:36 PM Loetmichel: been there saw that got the signed hair smell ;)
02:37 PM Loetmichel: same with ethanol or IPA vapors
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: productivity --> higher income --> more disposable income --> beer
02:37 PM Loetmichel: they just cant accumulate to 2% and above
02:37 PM rmu: don't forget new eardrums and hair/beard extensions for the workers
02:37 PM Loetmichel: in a normal workshop enviroment
02:38 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: the trick is finding the right balance between being productive & dangerous.
02:38 PM Loetmichel: THAT said: cooling aluminium with pure IPA while milling can make the shopvac used for swarf extraction into a veritable flamethrower.
02:38 PM Loetmichel: not that dangerous but it DID get the adrenaline flowing
02:38 PM rmu: *lol*
02:39 PM gloops: productivity = stress = blocked arteries = stroke = no picking your own nose
02:39 PM rmu: that depends. if it starts spitting out burning sawdust it might be quite a firestarter
02:39 PM Loetmichel: rmu: it cant
02:39 PM Loetmichel: there is no sawdust in the motor or in the exhaust port
02:40 PM Loetmichel: thats what the filter bags are for
02:40 PM rmu: yeah, if you burn them, dust will come out
02:40 PM rmu: (burn the filter bags)
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/54/Atomic_bombing_of_Japan.jpg/1200px-Atomic_bombing_of_Japan.jpg don't let this happen to you
02:40 PM Loetmichel: it just sucked up enough IPA into the filled bag that the air drawn trhu it was 2% or more so it ignited on the motor brushes and blasted out a veritable blue flame
02:41 PM Loetmichel: the moent i cut the power it extinguished itself
02:41 PM Loetmichel: moment
02:41 PM Loetmichel: as i said: quite the fireworks but not really hot enough to do any real damage
02:42 PM Loetmichel: just a few singed arm hairs when i reached for the switch ;)
02:42 PM rmu: explosion proofing stuff is no joke. if something can build dangerous atmosphere it will happen sooner or later somewhere. just like race condition bugs
02:43 PM Loetmichel: usually later rather than sooner
02:43 PM fragalot: rmu: I had a brilliant bug saturday
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GtUimzEq4U started by a cnc router
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: rumor has it
02:43 PM rmu: fragalot: a ladybug?
02:43 PM fragalot: windows locked my .elf file, and the compiler pretended everything was fine & the file was updated
02:43 PM fragalot: yet it wasn't
02:43 PM fragalot: and I spent freaking HOURS figuring out what the hell was going on
02:44 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: if you say so.... ;)
02:44 PM fragalot: "screw it. time for make clean... What do you mean you can't delete that file?"
02:44 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: hihi
02:44 PM Loetmichel: its even better when you cant find who locked it ;)
02:45 PM fragalot: I couldn't. just unlocked it & deleted it
02:45 PM rmu: fragalot: don't let windows touch your files
02:45 PM Jymmm: Welcome to microsoft =)
02:45 PM fragalot: Jymmm: indeed. :-)
02:45 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: sometimes you cant unlock it
02:45 PM Loetmichel: if some system service locked it
02:45 PM Loetmichel: been there
02:45 PM Jymmm: safemode
02:45 PM rmu: everything windows can be unlocked with a plasma torch and a sledge hammer
02:46 PM Loetmichel: had to boot a live linux to delete the file ;)
02:46 PM Jymmm: Loetmichel: safemode "should" work
02:46 PM Loetmichel: Jymmm: nope. not even the winPE from the setup disk did
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: semisafe mode
02:47 PM Jymmm: lo But, I can tell you how to fuck up windows deleteing a single file =)
02:47 PM Loetmichel: whatever locked that file it was pretty hardcore
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: windows on virtual hardware with a RAM drive
02:47 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: hurr, yeah
02:47 PM Loetmichel: linux had no problems though ;)
02:47 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: have you ever created a file called "null" on windows?
02:47 PM fragalot: or "prn"
02:47 PM Loetmichel: not a good idea
02:47 PM fragalot: if not, try it
02:47 PM fragalot: :D
02:47 PM Loetmichel: try one with two :: in its name
02:47 PM Loetmichel: also very funny
02:49 PM rmu: these https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS#Alternate_data_streams_(ADS) are evil.
02:49 PM rmu: you can even make them "anonymous"
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: I've been using this the past few years without issue https://www.koolrite.com/bacteriacontrol.php
02:56 PM fragalot: measured by the number of colonies per milliliter.. well there's one colony
02:57 PM fragalot: you can stick a spoon upright in it and it 'l stay :P
03:00 PM rmu: fragalot: you sure it is caused by bacteria?
03:01 PM rmu: could be your emulsion koagulated
03:02 PM MarcelineVQ: This page isn't very accurate about microbes hehe
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: I got 5 gallons (20L) for free
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: makes like 300L
03:05 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest94098
03:07 PM fragalot: rmu: That is also entirely possible.
03:07 PM fragalot: I could incubate swabs to find out... but eh. I'll just clean it out regularly
03:08 PM Tom_itx: aww c'mon...
03:08 PM Tom_itx: do the test
03:20 PM CaptHindsight: http://mwfmag.com/
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: anyone else getting those "I hacked your email so send money" written in broken English, Chinese etc?
03:24 PM fragalot: they are intentionally poorly written
03:24 PM fragalot: it's a method to filter out who responds to increase their chances of success
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: seems to be the most persistent spam i recall
03:26 PM XXCoder: got 2 of em so far
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: i kepp ending them bitcoins but it doesn't stop :)
03:26 PM XXCoder: their hacking skills is so good they took pictures of me with no webcam.
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: you too!
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: man these guys are good
03:28 PM fragalot: just send them a picture back of themselves
03:28 PM XXCoder: nah just goatse.cx picture
03:29 PM XXCoder: they hack my email I hack their brain
03:29 PM andypugh: Well, I do have a web cam, but the field fo view is such that they wouldn’t be able to see what I was up to. ANd lots of normal folk wear a gimp suit and ball gag when coding, don’t they?
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: sure sure
03:29 PM fragalot: always
03:29 PM fragalot: we've got one on order for the new guy too
03:29 PM fragalot: but he has to earn the talcum powder
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: -33C the next couple nights
03:32 PM fragalot: nice
03:33 PM fragalot: our weather report is similar, but without the stutter
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: I think the high Wednesday or Thursday is -25C
03:34 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: where?
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: around Chicago
03:34 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Oh, I thought in your area
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: yes
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: I'm a bit west so even colder here
03:35 PM XXCoder: im futher west and warmer
03:35 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: I thought you were in florida?
03:35 PM Tom_itx: he wishes
03:42 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
03:42 PM Tom_L: coolin off here too but not that much
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: no, I'm not a fan of trailer life
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: latest -30F, -35C
03:42 PM CaptHindsight: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dx7Va-SXcAAY7fN.jpg
03:42 PM XXCoder: capt florida is huge, i'm sure there is few actual houses
03:43 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: the east side of the great lakes gets way more snow
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QahsUJEYeus 2 years ago
03:45 PM XXCoder: lol
03:45 PM XXCoder: is that the wall? ;)
03:46 PM Deejay: gn8
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: I kind of liked your weather, that constant breeze can be nice
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: is there a time of year when the wind is calm?
03:49 PM Tom_L: not really
03:49 PM Tom_L: it's calm some days but can change over night
03:49 PM XXCoder: constant breeze = constant power
03:49 PM Tom_L: that's why we have so many windmills here now
03:50 PM Tom_L: generally if it's windy from the south this time of year for a day or so you can count on it getting cold and the wind shifting from the north
03:50 PM Tom_L: today is a good example
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: look at the pressure shift https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/ks/wichita?cm_ven=localwx_10day
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: did your ears pop?
03:52 PM Tom_L: not generally but i do feel the pressure on my head
03:52 PM Tom_L: had a good headache last night
03:52 PM CaptHindsight: that was in 1 hour
03:53 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: how often do you get snow?
03:54 PM XXCoder: 2 times a year typical. typically both times snow dont like ground
03:55 PM Tom_L: on a good day we'll get 40mph sustained winds
03:55 PM XXCoder: looks like none this year though, but same time we had snow as late as march
03:55 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: how far inland are you?
03:55 PM XXCoder: not very if you count inlet sea lol
03:56 PM XXCoder: seattle, tacoma region gets wind from ocean so it fairly stabilizes temperates
03:56 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: does it ever feel muggy there?
03:56 PM XXCoder: only rarely do temperate go below 30f
03:57 PM roycroft: we don't do muggy much around here
03:57 PM Tom_L: not generally
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: I've flown in and out of SETAC so many times and have never see anything but grey clouds and then suddenly a rainy runway
03:57 PM roycroft: the pacific northwet is unlike most of the country - we're wet and cool in the winter, warm/hot and dry in the summer
03:57 PM roycroft: woodworkers i know back east don't understand it
03:58 PM roycroft: their stuff all shrinks in the winter and swells up in the summer
03:58 PM Tom_L: at least compared to Ga or Fl
03:58 PM roycroft: it's the exact opposite here
03:58 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: summer are dry?
03:58 PM XXCoder: tend to be yeah
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: whats the avg temp in summer?
03:59 PM XXCoder: 80s typically, [eak of 90s for month
03:59 PM XXCoder: rarely over 100
04:00 PM CaptHindsight: same here, but humid
04:01 PM CaptHindsight: then why do I only see rain, just lucky?
04:02 PM XXCoder: seattle without clouds is like clown without makeup
04:02 PM XXCoder: though climate change is changing things, it used to be cloudy even in summers sometimes, but now..
04:11 PM Tom_L: we used to get alot more snow than we do now
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: my preference would be for cool and dry, but there's not many options
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: best so far is just move twice a year
04:15 PM Tom_L: average wind speed for Ks is 12.6 mph
04:17 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: are you officially in Tornado alley?
04:17 PM Tom_L: officially yes
04:17 PM Tom_L: google andover tornado and greensburg
04:17 PM Tom_L: 2 record holders i believe
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: https://accuweather.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/6bfb534/2147483647/resize/590x/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faccuweather-bsp.s3.amazonaws.com%2F45%2F35%2F099cce3c4627b4801ca29bc3c002%2Ftornado-alley.jpg
04:18 PM Tom_L: not as bad as it sounds
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: F5's
04:18 PM Tom_L: good thing about Ks is you can see them coming
04:18 PM Tom_L: unlike Mo etc
04:19 PM Tom_L: iirc the andover one was on the ground something like 45 min
04:19 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.kansas.com/latest-news/2onipt/picture847285/alternates/FREE_1140/andovertornado91
04:20 PM Tom_L: clipped boeing which is on the S end of wichita
04:20 PM Tom_L: started in haysville i think
04:21 PM Tom_L: also S of town
04:21 PM CaptHindsight: yards away https://youtu.be/5QK0VA_P83A?t=131
04:21 PM Tom_L: the greensburg one was something like 1.7 mi wide
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: I've been through two small tornadoes, Cat 1
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: F1
04:25 PM Tom_L: i've been told by unofficial sources they tend to cycle every 7 years
04:27 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoYyeXybTnw
04:27 PM Tom_L: can't see alot since it was at night
04:28 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
04:39 PM CaptHindsight: i was machining one day on the Matsuura and I heard a funny rumble so I stopped the machine thinking there was something wrong with the spindle motor..
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: when it stopped there was still a rumble, so i opened the door to see outside just as it passed nearby, green water sideways and instantly soaked
04:41 PM Tom_L: oddly enough the only tornado i was in was when i was a kid at my grandparents in Nebraska
04:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://postimg.cc/3k7Vcfnk
04:43 PM jthornton: this motherboard gets bad reviews but I have one that works fine https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Built-Celeron-Motherboard-GA-J1900N-D3V/dp/B00IW99S4A#customerReviews
04:44 PM CaptHindsight: ^^ after it passed by
04:44 PM jthornton: looking for another micro itx with dual ethernet ports for uspace on the BP mill
04:48 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: mini-itx or micro-atx?
04:48 PM jthornton: mini itx
04:49 PM jthornton: I have a case and power supply that used to have a hmmm I forget the motherboard so looking to build a new pc for the BP, all the motherboards I have laying around have issues
05:10 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.aspx?Ntk=all&sortby=match&N=4294966996+4294817924+4294817787&myStore=true

05:14 PM jthornton: not seen the micro center before
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: they price match to newegg
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: I have 2 stores local
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: comesin handy
05:14 PM gregcnc: no school today, they are saying no school wednesday
05:15 PM jthornton: lucky you, we have nothing like that here
05:15 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory=446&N=100007623%20600008949%20600009028&IsNodeId=1&IsPowerSearch=1

05:15 PM gregcnc: yeah
05:15 PM gregcnc: thursday will not be much better
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: all I could find quickly, the search functions are getting worse
05:16 PM jthornton: yea I know
05:17 PM jthornton: anyway I've gone with what I know works... now if I can find pciex16 video cards I have two motherboards that might work as well lol
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: I have several Gigabyte boards here but I stopped buying them
05:17 PM jthornton: why
05:17 PM ziper: how prevalent were duplicating machines prior to the invention of CNC?
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: got too flaky, bad bios or too sensitive USB ports
05:18 PM jthornton: hmm I've not had any problems with them
05:18 PM jthornton: ziper: it's been so long ago I have forgotten
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: prefer Asus over GB over Asrock over Biostar over
05:20 PM jthornton: I like Asus too and have a few running now
05:20 PM CaptHindsight: weak link lately has been power supplies
05:21 PM CaptHindsight: been moving to name brand supplies vs any "specials" at Microcenter
05:21 PM gregcnc: lol re spam email. I got one that said "hi perv, i recorded you masturbating....."
05:22 PM jthornton: did you get a chance to try out the QtPyVCP tutorial?
05:22 PM jthornton: I got one of those too lol
05:23 PM andypugh: Reading back through the weather…. The UK has a really benign climate. Especially when you consider where we are.
05:24 PM Tom_L: what... no tornados?
05:24 PM andypugh: The northern most tip of is at the same latitude as Nunavut
05:25 PM rmu: take away the gulfstream and uk will turn into north norway
05:26 PM andypugh: Well, south Norway, because Norway will turn into Greenalnd
05:26 PM rmu: no more fjords
05:28 PM andypugh: Talking of such things, this is fascinating: https://thetruesize.com/#?borders=1~!MTcyMTE5MTE.MzEyODAxNA*MjMxMDM5MzA(Mjk3MzA4ODM~!CONTIGUOUS_US*MTAzNDY5MzM.MjQ4NjcwMzA)Mw
05:28 PM andypugh: That’s the USA dragged on to Africa
05:29 PM andypugh: Dragging Brazil around is interesting too, it’s huge
05:29 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: I get those in Chinese as well
05:30 PM rmu: brazil is about the same size as USA IIRC
05:30 PM andypugh: Whereas Iceland is actually about as big as Pennsylvania
05:31 PM andypugh: And Greenland shrinks an awful lot if you drag it south
05:31 PM rmu: mercator projection
05:32 PM CaptHindsight: Canada can stretch from Canada to North Africa
05:32 PM Jymmm: no it cant
05:33 PM CaptHindsight: can too
05:33 PM Jymmm: can not
05:33 PM Jymmm: wally wall
05:34 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVX-PrBRtTY - related
05:34 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3lz2GFfkEg What fits into Mother Russia
05:34 PM SpeedEvil: Map projection / west wing
05:35 PM andypugh: No, it’s true, you can drag Canada to a position where it touches Africa and Canada. It’s not quite as big as it appears on the Mercator projection, but it’s still quite big. And wide
05:36 PM andypugh: Trumps Canadian wall would be very expensive. Might be cheaper to give them Alaska instead.
05:36 PM jdh: it was pretty cheap
05:37 PM rmu: lol
05:37 PM rmu: the question is
05:37 PM rmu: the wall to canada
05:37 PM rmu: will it be there to keep the canadians out or the us-americans in ;)
05:38 PM andypugh: Well, they do have cheap servo drives, I can see the atraction.
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: we could run a shuttle from Texas border to Canada
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: the central uhmericans could settle the vast pastures of central Canada
05:40 PM CaptHindsight: last i checked you could immigrate to Canada IF you farm and settle that area
05:40 PM andypugh: Well, they are certainly vast
05:41 PM andypugh: I am not sure how fertile.
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: oops https://www.immigration.ca/canada-places-moratorium-on-new-applications-under-farm-management-stream-self-employed-program
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: too late
05:41 PM andypugh: Darn it! I was tempted to take up snow-man mining
05:43 PM andypugh: Elizabeth 2 is still Queen of an astonishingly large area of the world.

05:46 PM rmu: thats an url in need of a shortener
05:49 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: several sources say that Saskatchewan soil is very fertile
05:49 PM andypugh: I wonder how long the growing season is?
05:52 PM CaptHindsight: On average, your frost-free growing season starts May 21 and ends Sep 15, totalling 117 days.
05:52 PM CaptHindsight: slightly shorten than the US upper midwest
05:53 PM andypugh: My bit of the UK gets 300 days
05:54 PM andypugh: So, if you are a Canadian farmer you get a lot more time off… Hmm
05:54 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/sites/www.nrcan.gc.ca/files/forest/length_growing_season_1951_2010_3000.jpg
05:54 PM andypugh: Not that I really care, as I am not a farmer or gardener, but it does mean a longer motorcycle riding season.
05:55 PM andypugh: I rode to work today in shirt and unlined suit. OK, so that was a mistake, I was cold, but not dangereously cold.
05:57 PM CaptHindsight: i got the forklift stuck a few feet from the door
05:58 PM SpeedEvil: I have a fucked up sleep/wake issue at the moment.
05:58 PM SpeedEvil: hence why I just moved 6 solar panels at closing on midnight. Just 19 to go.
05:58 PM CaptHindsight: anyone looking for a 10K lb (4500Kg) capacity forklift?
05:58 PM SpeedEvil: CaptHindsight: see above
05:58 PM andypugh: Me too. I have decided to go to bed at 10pm tonight, in an attempt to feel like getting up at the time that I should get up to not raise eyebrows at work.
05:59 PM SpeedEvil: CaptHindsight: But unless it's a rugged terrain one, it'd just bog alas.
05:59 PM andypugh: OK, there is alreadya flaw in that plan...
05:59 PM CaptHindsight: tare weight is 16k Lbs
06:00 PM CaptHindsight: smooth tires on snow
06:01 PM CaptHindsight: they might get stuck in rain on an incline
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: what is you night length currently?
06:04 PM CaptHindsight: Daylight Hours: 9 hours (+3m 11s) thats not bad
06:04 PM andypugh: Dark around 1730, sunrise arounf 0730
06:05 PM andypugh: But, that is because we are a lot further North than Sakatchwen
06:06 PM andypugh: Well, maybe not a lot, and maybe not all of it
06:17 PM Tom_L: your goal to show up to work on time once a week?
06:19 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, never understood the 9-5 unless you really are interactive with a team
06:21 PM andypugh: Anyway, it’s now past midnight, and I am going with Plan B. Night all
06:43 PM SpeedEvil: sun here 8:14-4:37
06:43 PM SpeedEvil: 56N
