03:21 AM CNC_Brian: Hi guy's, having an issue with some gcode for a new post processor. LinuxCNC is giving me an error, at line 18, but I can't see a problem.

03:29 AM CNC_Brian: Cant see G50 in the docs?
03:33 AM Wolf__: google says FANUC gcode
03:34 AM CNC_Brian: Will try removing it. Everything else look sensible. This post is apparently for a Tormach PP controller, which I think is LinuxCNC
03:34 AM Wolf__: sorta mostly
03:36 AM CNC_Brian: Apparently is scale factor reset??
04:46 AM jthornton: morning
04:46 AM XXCoder: hey jthornton found out why old machine wasnt running for a while. spindle and controller is dead
04:47 AM XXCoder: its on sale for $3000 lol
04:47 AM XXCoder: i asked guy if they decide to upgrade controller box and spindle I want old controller box
04:47 AM XXCoder: but honestly doubtful. its quite worn
04:48 AM jthornton: what kind of machine
04:48 AM XXCoder: fadal 88
04:51 AM jthornton: like this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fadal-VMC15-XT-Extended-Travel-Vertical-Machining-Center-with-Fadal-88HS-CNC-Con/264143319108?hash=item3d802b3044:g:3fIAAOSwl1FcP5YK
04:52 AM XXCoder: wow thats weird in-between old and new fadal lol
04:52 AM XXCoder: no thats model vmc 15-xt. im talking about model 88
04:54 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWZhJJcYDBc
04:54 AM XXCoder: prepure to be sick, video uses autovomit smoother
05:05 AM jthornton: didn't see much of the machine, I guess it's similar to my BP 308 http://gnipsel.com/shop/unload-308/unload-308.xhtml
05:13 AM XXCoder: its more than truck front shape but yeah
05:14 AM XXCoder: *more a box shape
05:24 AM Tom_L: morning
05:25 AM Tom_L: 15°F, Hi 43
05:43 AM jthornton: 21°F high 32°F one of the birds is molting poor thing has lost part of it's built in blanket
05:53 AM XXCoder: wow
05:53 AM XXCoder: parallel jaws pliers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMDsX38_rxY
05:53 AM SpeedEvil: yeah - they're pretty awesome
05:53 AM XXCoder: didnt know it existed
05:54 AM XXCoder: i want some. dammit
05:54 AM SpeedEvil: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000X4KP1C is also damn neat.
05:56 AM XXCoder: interesting
05:57 AM XXCoder: second one: calipers. of cpurse. already have 4 if I also count the chinseium shit one also
06:03 AM XXCoder: LOL love the videp
06:09 AM SpeedEvil: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wera-05073645001-Ratchet-Kraftform-Kompakt-x/dp/B00BT0G5UY wins 'feels most amazing in the hand' award for me.
06:10 AM XXCoder: lol i have cheap one. works fine for few years now
06:10 AM XXCoder: i love my hex handle type set though
06:10 AM XXCoder: most of em still looks new, and 2 is really worn
06:10 AM XXCoder: worse being 5/16

06:12 AM XXCoder: im wrong, over 4 years apparently. nov 2015
06:12 AM XXCoder: no im right nm lol
06:18 AM XXCoder: LOL love the ending
07:04 AM Net|: "between the hammer and the anvil"
08:32 AM Loetmichel: Net|: isnt that "between a rock and a hard place" in english?
08:33 AM Loetmichel: SpeedEvil: kraftform is very good
08:33 AM Loetmichel: also the company is in my birth city ;)
08:34 AM Loetmichel: wera makes amazuing bits, too. diamond dust covered so a phillips/PZ cant slip out of the screw...
08:35 AM gregcnc: Kardashian screwdriver bits?
08:37 AM Loetmichel: gregcnc: diamond DUST. not jewelery
08:37 AM gregcnc: bedazzled?
08:39 AM gregcnc: how long have they been making those? i seem to remember snapon magic screwdrivers 20+ years ago
08:39 AM Loetmichel: https://www.contorion.de/handwerkzeug/wera-bit-sortiment-bit-check-30-diamond-1-30-teilig-55833977 <- not cheap though
08:40 AM gregcnc: they are 200USD on amazon
08:40 AM Loetmichel: gregcnc: at least twenty years. i remember seeing them as "new" in a flyer back when i was in school... i am close to 50 now ;)
08:41 AM gregcnc: eh 55-80 usd seems to be the going price
08:45 AM Loetmichel: they are great though if you have to deal with mangled or many Phillips/PZ screws
08:46 AM Loetmichel: as long as there is even a sliver of the "cross" left in the screw the diamond bits will bite and remove them
08:47 AM Loetmichel: also they rip the head from the screw before they mangle the phillips itself
08:47 AM Loetmichel: when tightening screws
09:45 AM rmu: LaGuardia shut down
10:15 AM * methods_ gigglez
10:49 AM Loetmichel: Gnhihi.I just noticed that i have 24 gig ram in my system now... P6T WS pro mainboard is a bit picky with rams, had 6*2gb in it all the time, only 8gb recognized. then i switched to 6*4gb about a year ago... only to still have 8gb recognized in windows7... that seems to have remedied itself at one or the other reboot... Strange things happen. ?!?
10:57 AM fragalot: 'sup
11:19 AM gloops: all quiet
11:30 AM fragalot: got the mill to work today
11:31 AM fragalot: 2 super simple issues once you know... 1st is that you must press the "CE" button after power up so it actually loads the UI... then you need to press the power button TWICE, as the first cycle self-checks the E-stop circuit
11:32 AM fragalot: and after that, you must put "STOP" in the MDI before it wants to switch the spindle on
11:35 AM gloops: theres always a knack to individual machines
11:39 AM fragalot: Aye
11:51 AM fragalot: finally got some bids on the welder
11:52 AM fragalot: think "finally"
11:52 AM fragalot: read the ratings of the 2 people that bid on it.. both score really low and apparently accuse everyone that doesn't sell to them of fraudulent sales
11:52 AM fragalot: lovely.
11:57 AM gloops: well once they start bidding maybe some others will take interest
12:00 PM fragalot: tbh the first one that shows up can have it
12:00 PM fragalot: i've moved it out of my way 7 times now :P
12:05 PM gloops: is it AC/DC? they usually get a lot of interest
12:07 PM fragalot: DC scratch start
12:08 PM fragalot: it's a glorified stick welder that has a manual TIG torch
12:20 PM gloops: well, i dont what value it has, ive had stuff though that i thought 'this is too good to throw away' but ends up more trouble than it was worth when trying to sell it lol
12:25 PM fragalot: I'm perfectly happy to give it away, but it feels like a shame to chuck it in the tip
02:02 PM fragalot: gloops: https://www.marktplaats.nl/a/doe-het-zelf-en-verbouw/draaibanken/m1368095124-tos-mn-80-a-precisiedraaibankje-nieuwstaat.html?c=3c1f5dcc18d02a99040ca8de656940d2&previousPage=lr
02:12 PM gloops: seems expensive fragalot
02:12 PM fragalot: it's been fully rebuilt. I'd say that's a fair price
02:13 PM fragalot: (and if it wasn't rebuilt, I doubt it's been used)
02:14 PM gloops: what make is it in english?
02:14 PM fragalot: TOS
02:15 PM gloops: well they arent cheap lathes
02:17 PM fragalot: I'm surprised how affordable rebuilt myford 7's seem to be
02:17 PM fragalot: I nearly paid more for my chinese sponge
02:18 PM gloops: they werent that highly regarded in the trade, always had a bit of a cult following among hobbyists though
02:19 PM fragalot: i mean, box ways on a tiny lathe likek that, what's not to like as a hobbyist :P
02:20 PM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Myford-Lathe/264152249265?
02:20 PM gloops: suppose it depends who rebuilt it - and what their idea of rebuild was
02:21 PM fragalot: sure, the one i'm looking at has put up pictures of the entire process, and it's pretty in-depth
02:21 PM fragalot: that said, i've not run an indicator over it myself so who knows
02:25 PM gloops: these were the better lathes https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dean-Smith-grace-Lathe-Tool-room/163499939646?
02:25 PM gloops: i cant fit anything else in though now
02:26 PM fragalot: same, hence getting rid of that welder
02:26 PM fragalot: even though it's tiny,.. space is at a premium xD
02:26 PM fragalot: I don't think I'd be able to fit just the tailstock of that DS&G
02:31 PM gloops: ive got a myford wood lathe in bits im going to restore some day lol, and various other things, i cant take anything in unless it has a direct purpose for something now, sadly
02:32 PM gloops: i.e no more toys
03:03 PM * JT-Shop has not got anything work related done today so what the heck knock off early I think
03:04 PM FinboySlick: Loetmichel: Maybe you had a 33bit version of windows installed.
03:10 PM Loetmichel: 33 bit?
03:11 PM Loetmichel: you mean: 32 bit?
03:12 PM Loetmichel: no, its a 64 bit version. the 32 bit version can only do 4gb
03:12 PM Loetmichel: also i didnt change a thing, just noticed that it now says 24GB ram instead of 8GB
03:12 PM Loetmichel: after installing the rams a year ago
03:12 PM Loetmichel: no idea when that changed
03:14 PM FinboySlick: Loetmichel: I meant 33 bit, which would limit you to 8Gb.
03:14 PM FinboySlick: GB I mean.
03:14 PM Loetmichel: there is no such version
03:14 PM Loetmichel: also i didnt change anything as i said above
03:15 PM Loetmichel: apaert from the occasional reboot in the last year
03:15 PM FinboySlick: Oh sweet Loetmichel, what a wonderfully german reply ;) I know there's no 33bit version of windows, it was just a joke that illustrated your problem well.
03:17 PM Loetmichel: i see
03:17 PM Loetmichel: didnt get the joke, sorry ;)
03:18 PM Loetmichel: i took you for being serious
03:18 PM FinboySlick: All the funnier to me.
03:20 PM Loetmichel: that said: i knew from the start that the Asus P6T-Ws pro was known for refusing to recognize certain combinations of size and timing ram modules, so i wasnt surprised to get only 8gb with 24gb installed. what REALLY puzzles me is that i now have the full 24gb without any change in bios or something
03:20 PM Loetmichel: mabe one of the windows updates last year did something to that effect, although i couldnt fathom how
03:37 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: what you really need is an 18 bit system
03:51 PM Jymmm: Loetmichel: what you really need is an 1024 bit system
03:51 PM fragalot: or 24
03:51 PM Jymmm: Nope, 1024
03:51 PM Loetmichel: what i really need is to know why that system now starts to recognize the full ram without any change.
03:52 PM fragalot: warmed up
03:52 PM Loetmichel: it runs fine in any other aspect
03:52 PM Loetmichel: i doubt it took a year to warm up
03:52 PM Loetmichel: as i said: i installed the 24G last year ;)
03:52 PM Jymmm: Loetmichel: any reboots/power cycles lately?
03:53 PM Loetmichel: yes, a few weeks ago
03:53 PM Jymmm: Is that when the ram was reconnized?
03:53 PM Jymmm: recognized*
03:54 PM Loetmichel: actually: Runtime: 30:07:05:00 just now
03:54 PM Loetmichel: i have no idea
03:54 PM Loetmichel: i just noticed yesterday that it now reads 24GB, not 8gb as back when i installed the modules
03:54 PM Jymmm: Loetmichel: rarely, but sometimes it's a bios/cmos setting that "hangs"/resets to defaults
04:05 PM Deejay: gn8
04:22 PM enleth: I'm looking for a particular type of contactless voltage tester/probe that I've seen being used by an electrician a couple years ago
04:22 PM enleth: unfortunately, I did not think to ask him what the make and model is at the time and I'm probably going to have a hard time contacting him now
04:23 PM enleth: the thing looked and worked like a typical pen-shaped contactless voltage probe - you press the button and it lights up when near AC line level voltage
04:24 PM enleth: the catch is, it had a three-color indicator light and it - I think - latched onto the first detected phase, then changed color when moved closer to any of the other two
04:25 PM enleth: I'm googling now and I can't find anything of the sort available for purchase anywhere
04:26 PM enleth: I'm absolutely certain I saw the guy activate this probe over the middle busbar in a distribution panel, then move it up and down while holding the button to check the other two busbars
04:26 PM enleth: and it changed color accordingly
04:29 PM enleth: I'm pretty sure what it did was start an internal 50Hz signal generator, phase-aligned to the first external 50Hz field detected, then as long as the button is held it changed the indication according to how much the currently detected field is out of phase with the internal generator
04:30 PM sync: ht instruments ht70 does that but it looks very cumbersome to use
04:30 PM enleth: simple and very handy if used by someone who understands the limitations of this method
04:31 PM enleth: sync: oh, that's almost there actually
04:32 PM enleth: ok, that's pretty much the same thing, just simplified a bit
04:35 PM enleth: it's $50, a bit much
04:38 PM sync: yeah idk
04:38 PM enleth: there's an $10 version on IndiaMart
04:38 PM sync: seems like it is pretty useless tbh
04:38 PM enleth: I'm looking for a retailer
04:38 PM sync: I always have my duspol with me anyway
04:38 PM sync: so eh
04:39 PM enleth: sync: well, I've seen that thing in use and it seemed pretty convenient
04:40 PM enleth: for one, no need to touch anything
04:40 PM enleth: that's a good thing if you're routinely working around truly ancient distribution panels
04:40 PM enleth: I do often enough to consider buying this
04:41 PM sync: yeah, I have one of those pens as well but ime just using the duspol is easier
04:42 PM enleth: if you can access an unpainted live surface without getting uncomfortably close to other unpainted live surfaces
04:42 PM enleth: that's not always possible in Soviet-era panels
04:43 PM enleth: and I mean Soviet-era literally
04:43 PM enleth: what I just do is put on the insulating gloves every time I need to open one of those
04:43 PM enleth: but that takes time
04:46 PM Jymmm: enleth: what color was the probe?
04:47 PM Jymmm: enleth: what country?
04:57 PM enleth: Jymmm: Poland, I don't remember the body color but I'm pretty sure the light colors were yellow/green/violet, which is the legacy pre-IEC standard for L1/L2/L3 in Poland, which suggests the device was locally made
04:58 PM enleth: those colors were for busbars only, of course, not for wires
04:59 PM enleth: still, not a good thing it used green and yellow, so it was phased out in favor of the brown/black/gray combo
04:59 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/C9LiyEc.mp4
05:00 PM enleth: that wouldn't work for indicator light colors though, would it.

05:07 PM MarcelineVQ: those clips seem to end up on a variety of yt channels, the sound it makes for the slow-mo parts is satisfying though I'm not sure if that's real or simply added later
05:08 PM CaptHindsight: surprising since that boring bar is so long
05:08 PM MarcelineVQ: *those clips of the facemill
05:09 PM jthornton: anyone want to try the QtPyVCP tutorial? https://qtpyvcp.kcjengr.com/tutorials/basic_vcp_01.html
05:09 PM CaptHindsight: wow thats better than 0.127um
05:09 PM CaptHindsight: >60nm not bad
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: but looking at the pattern it's not that smooth
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/0zdUtl9.jpg
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: it would look like a front surface mirror
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: jthornton: will try this weekend
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: oh great high -13F this week
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: so -30C here and +45C in Australia
05:32 PM jthornton: ok thanks
05:33 PM jthornton: cold here too
05:46 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: saw those videos but was part of cnc compilations. did you make the orginial videos?
05:47 PM XXCoder: wow last picture...
05:47 PM XXCoder: so colorful
05:48 PM XXCoder: must be artifact from cutting pattern being so shallow that light inference happens
05:50 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: off imgur, just thought those here might find them interesting
05:52 PM MarcelineVQ: XXCoder: possibly, can also be from the cutting fluid or cleaner used to remove the fluid
05:53 PM XXCoder: hmm didnt think of that marc. yeah possibly
05:53 PM CaptHindsight: upon closer inspection I could see cut groves
05:53 PM XXCoder: capt yeah love em. you probably found the orginal videos
05:53 PM CaptHindsight: so it's likely oil left over from cutting
05:57 PM CaptHindsight: https://imagebin.ca/v/4UmRdOh58LEL zoom in to the face
05:59 PM CaptHindsight: 125nm is 1/4 the wavelength of cyan/green
06:00 PM CaptHindsight: that would look like a front surface mirror if it was that smooth
06:00 PM XXCoder: 1/4 hmm might be still enough for inference
06:01 PM XXCoder: if its alum then the transparent layer of alum oxide may be causing that
06:02 PM Jymmm: XXCoder: it's a nano snail =)
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: it forms a few nm oxide coating in seconds
06:02 PM XXCoder: exactly
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: depends on temp and moisture content in the area
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: but you can see groves
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: grooves
06:03 PM XXCoder: yeah can see also. probably not that accurate
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: the color pattern is likely from the oil as well
06:04 PM CaptHindsight: looks like a CD with grooves
06:04 PM XXCoder: lol yeah
06:04 PM XXCoder: what if thats how they secretly send secret info inside company out? lol

07:01 PM * SpeedEvil wonders if you can mix (in vacuum or under hydrogen) fine diamond and molten copper/bronze.

07:16 PM CaptHindsight: SpeedEvil: whatcha makin?
07:16 PM SpeedEvil: Just idle wonderings.
07:17 PM SpeedEvil: Was wondering on the best possible bronze knife.
07:17 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
07:17 PM CaptHindsight: also a great heat sink
07:17 PM SpeedEvil: Which isn't really a very practical idea.

07:18 PM CaptHindsight: Diamond Ginzu Knife
07:19 PM CaptHindsight: I can see the infomerical already :)
07:19 PM SpeedEvil: It actually sort-of-would have a positive.
07:19 PM SpeedEvil: In that copper alloys >80% have very very good antimicrobial surface properties.
07:19 PM SpeedEvil: The copper ions get into and 'short out' the cells.
07:24 PM Jymmm: bronze? what is this the stone age?!

07:45 PM Jymmm: Tom_L: make it fist size please
07:47 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: you idiot, it's the bronze age :p
07:47 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: pfff, it's the space age, duh
07:47 PM CaptHindsight: space where?
07:48 PM * Tom_L gives Jymmm a ceramic knife instead
07:48 PM Jymmm: Tom_L: Noooooooo too brittle
07:48 PM CaptHindsight: pottery knife
07:50 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Space.... the final frontier, this is the voyage of ...

07:50 PM Jymmm: DOH!
07:51 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: how's the weather there?
07:53 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: outside iwth a tshirt today =)
07:57 PM CaptHindsight: was just outside shoveling ice
08:12 PM SpeedEvil: Just wait long enough, and ice will naturally turn into personal injury lawsuits
08:50 PM XXCoder: was out for hours in thin coat lol
08:51 PM XXCoder: SpeedEvil: there used to be people who drove around looking for unattended icy walkways to house, fall down and sue
08:51 PM XXCoder: judges got wise to it
08:53 PM roycroft: the law here is odd, but perhaps somewhat appropriate
08:53 PM roycroft: as long as you don't shovel your sidewalk it's an act of nature
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: in the USA, Germany demads that your walk be shoveled and ice free
08:54 PM roycroft: but the instant you start snow removal you may be held liable for injuries suffered by folks slipping on your sidewalk
08:54 PM XXCoder: thats great motivation to not shovel
08:54 PM roycroft: fortunately, as rarely as we have snow, and as fast as it melts when it does snow, it's not much of a problem
08:54 PM roycroft: if it snows, almost everyone stays home for the day
08:55 PM roycroft: and by the next day it's usually gone
08:55 PM XXCoder: here in wa state snow is quite rare
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: we have snow for weeks at a time
08:55 PM XXCoder: considering that wa is quite north for a state it only snows maybe twice a year here and usually both times snow dont like ground
08:55 PM roycroft: winter is not quite over yet, but we've had nary flake of snow this season
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: it has to be really deep , maybe 12" or more overnight for schools to close
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: and thats for 1 day
08:56 PM roycroft: capthindsight: in the pacific northwet, west of the cascades, schools close when snow is merely forecast
08:56 PM XXCoder: yeah tend to depend on how often it snows
08:56 PM XXCoder: capt the one time we had 12" snow area closed down for few days
08:56 PM roycroft: but we don't have nor need proper snow removal equipment
08:57 PM roycroft: i've lived in eugene for over 25 years, and never once has a snow plow come down my street
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: Chicago mayors have lost elections due to poor snow removal
08:57 PM roycroft: i grew up in chicago
08:57 PM roycroft: that's a whole different story
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: they still get the trucks out before it even snows
08:57 PM roycroft: when snow is in the forecast, idot park plows on almost every freeway onramp
08:57 PM XXCoder: heh east washington state is also quite different
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: salt on dry pavement
08:57 PM roycroft: they just sit there until the snow starts falling
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: does wonders for your auto body
08:58 PM roycroft: then they immediately remove it
08:58 PM roycroft: at least that's how it worked when i lived there
08:58 PM roycroft: and as far as the city
08:58 PM roycroft: city sanitation crews would plow the italian restaurant parking lots as soon as snow started accumulating
08:58 PM roycroft: then they would move on to the arterial streets
08:59 PM XXCoder: italian resturant parking lots? pretty specific.
08:59 PM MarcelineVQ: 'italian restaurants' XXCoder
08:59 PM CaptHindsight: yeah nice good fellas
08:59 PM XXCoder: well yes
08:59 PM roycroft: yes, a lot of good fellas
08:59 PM XXCoder: i just missed a S
08:59 PM roycroft: very powerful fellas
08:59 PM roycroft: if you know what i mean
08:59 PM roycroft: very family oriented, though
08:59 PM XXCoder: lol
08:59 PM roycroft: and they place a high value on loyalty
08:59 PM MarcelineVQ: the wisest of restauranteurs
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: they have moved onto legit businesses now
09:00 PM roycroft: the city of chicago have turned into wimps now though
09:00 PM roycroft: i remember the great blizzard of '67
09:00 PM roycroft: we got close to 3 feet of snow in a day
09:01 PM CaptHindsight: cantractin, garbage removal, riverboat casinos
09:01 PM roycroft: it was the second time ever that o'hare closed
09:01 PM roycroft: now o'hare closes at least once/year due to weather, it seems
09:02 PM roycroft: after that blizzard i remember going outside and being able to walk up onto the roof of my house because of drifted snow along the back side of the house
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: I have pics of 67
09:02 PM SpeedEvil: CaptHindsight: riverboat casinos never have to plow.
09:03 PM roycroft: i was still in grade school then
09:03 PM roycroft: iirc we were off school for a week
09:03 PM roycroft: it was a wonderful time!
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: https://imagebin.ca/v/4UnM8AhHyZww
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: https://imagebin.ca/v/4UnMLuQbGrDP
09:06 PM XXCoder: wow so much snow
09:06 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: we dug snow caves that winter
09:07 PM MarcelineVQ: my mom recalls swinging on utility lines when the snow got high enough to reach them
09:07 PM MarcelineVQ: But I've not seen snow quite that high myself :>
09:08 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: between the sidewalk and the street there is usually 10ft of grass
09:08 PM MarcelineVQ: had a dump big enough for snow caves in 96 though
09:08 PM MarcelineVQ: yard tunnels and such
09:08 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: that year that area would have snow piled 6ft or more in front of everyones house
09:08 PM XXCoder: sounds so much fun for kids
09:09 PM SpeedEvil: https://i.imgur.com/4zUfgvV.jpg - snow.
09:09 PM SpeedEvil: (not this year)
09:09 PM MarcelineVQ: XXCoder: idk, road snow packs pretty hard hehe
09:09 PM CaptHindsight: SpeedEvil: where was that?
09:09 PM SpeedEvil: Scotland.
09:10 PM SpeedEvil: 2010
09:10 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=QnQ13NL3MFk interesting
09:10 PM XXCoder: i once made escapement system with lego
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: do any of you run wood and metals on the same lathes or mills?
09:14 PM CaptHindsight: do you hire people to clean up the mess?
09:15 PM Tom_L: wood & metal shops shouldn't mix
09:16 PM XXCoder: dont wood chips corrode steel and iron?
09:16 PM SpeedEvil: Tom_L: ironwood?
09:16 PM XXCoder: aluminiumwood ;)
09:16 PM SpeedEvil: XXCoder: everything corrodes steel and iron
09:16 PM XXCoder: well yes just worse
09:17 PM SpeedEvil: Dry wood sawdust and chips is no worse than fingerprints
09:17 PM SpeedEvil: At worst.
09:17 PM ziper: just finished a bunch of carbon fiber work, needed to be fixed in time for a race tomorrow
09:17 PM XXCoder: interesting
09:18 PM ziper: it was extremely ugly
09:18 PM CaptHindsight: ziper: blocks of CF?
09:31 PM roycroft: some woods contain acids that can corrode metals
09:31 PM roycroft: some do not have so much of that
09:31 PM roycroft: but sawdust will capture and hold water from the air and indirectly cause corrosion
09:31 PM CaptHindsight: wood lathes
09:33 PM roycroft: i have to say, my woodshop is much much less dusty than it used to get now that i'm spending the big bucks on festool gear
09:34 PM roycroft: and since my metal lathe and milling machine live in my wood shop that's really good
09:34 PM roycroft: although i do cover the lathe and the mill when i'm doing woodworking
09:39 PM andypugh: Whereas my dad’s wood shop is 1” deep in shavings 10 years after we last cleaned up and 5 years after he was put in a home.
09:40 PM andypugh: I kind of don’t want to clean that up
09:40 PM XXCoder: vacuum em up
09:41 PM XXCoder: assuming it doesnt turn into fossil rock layer ;)
09:42 PM andypugh: It’s a bit emotional
09:42 PM XXCoder: yeah i remember cleaning up my dad stuff when he died
09:43 PM andypugh: I am not sure if my dad is alive or dead
09:43 PM XXCoder: thats bit odd thing to not know?
09:44 PM andypugh: There is this guy who looks a lot like him, but can’t do the things that defined him.
09:44 PM XXCoder: alzberters?
09:45 PM XXCoder: scientists might have finally found cause of that so maybe soon we have cure or in least management of it
09:45 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: went through similar
09:45 PM andypugh: It’s too late, too many small strokes
09:47 PM XXCoder: my dad died from heart attack, but really caused by old age and lerkemia for long time
09:47 PM XXCoder: he was 75
09:47 PM CaptHindsight: eventually stopped eating and then got a call after 3 weeks
09:49 PM XXCoder: similiar with my grandfather :( after grandmother suddenly had heart attack and died in front of him (he was bedridden by cancer) so he just stopped eating and died 2 weeks later
09:49 PM CaptHindsight: parents both made it to 89
09:49 PM andypugh: Sorry, not the right place to do this. I am my dad + a PhD. I got his “well, other people can do this, so why can’t we” and and the option that he never had of a proper education.
09:51 PM andypugh: So he tought me that the trick is to start an “imposible” task and not stop till you finish.
09:51 PM CaptHindsight: why I moved over to molecular biology, DNA synthesis and nanotech
09:52 PM andypugh: And that included 4 scratch-built vehicles and rebuilding a house first built in 1450.
09:52 PM Tom_L: i bet that was an awesome project to do too
09:52 PM Tom_L: from what i've seen
09:54 PM andypugh: This is a very old web page, but look at the first thee pictures and thing “Do I see my perfect retirement home”?
09:54 PM andypugh: http://www.bodgesoc.org/slaithwaite.html
09:55 PM Tom_L: just needed some tlc
09:55 PM Tom_L: how long did that take btw?
09:56 PM XXCoder: andypugh: thats fanastic father indeed :)
09:57 PM andypugh: Thing is, we worked on it 20 years, they lived there 5 years, then his brain fell apart and he’s been 5 years in a nursing home. And given that he is very fit and heallthy, except from the obvious, he could be there another 20.
09:57 PM XXCoder: BTW read this andypugh https://www.newscientist.com/article/2191814-we-may-finally-know-what-causes-alzheimers-and-how-to-stop-it/
09:58 PM XXCoder: science news tend to be overblown so dunno. just hope its a success and we can finally stop it from happening. losing mind is one of my worse aging fears
09:59 PM andypugh: In those pics, blue overalls is my dad, white is a much younger me. In fact in general my dad there is younger than I am now.
10:00 PM XXCoder: that house is pretty amazing. dunno if i would try restore it tho lol
10:00 PM XXCoder: can tell site is old, pictures is tiny!
10:01 PM XXCoder: had to zoom in lol
10:01 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: there are lots of things we could have been doing for a long time, DNA/genes are easy to synthesize, enzymes can edit genes
10:02 PM XXCoder: yeah though we dont understand whole gene map yet, and recently discovered that dna bends also are critical information
10:02 PM XXCoder: so thats more info to learn
10:02 PM andypugh: That New Scientist article looks like really good news in general, But my dad’s problem is lots of little strokes. Not the same issue. His dad went the same way. I might, or might not.
10:02 PM CaptHindsight: hardly anyone is working on neurons and how they store and retrieve info/memories
10:02 PM andypugh: They were all very bald very early, and as I am not I can hope to dodge that doom for a different one.
10:02 PM XXCoder: yeah mini strokes not same just alz's is so common for losing mind :( thouggh what causes mini strokes?
10:04 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: the point is few are working on this, but billions on defense
10:04 PM XXCoder: indeed
10:04 PM Rab: "It must be said that making your own forge in order to make your own door furniture may be going a bit far." In fact I think nothing in the world could be more apropos.
10:04 PM andypugh: XXCoder: It’s a web site from the days of dialup, when a thumbnail was thumbnail sized
10:05 PM CaptHindsight: my mom and dad both had the series of mini strokes
10:05 PM XXCoder: damn house looks amazing
10:05 PM XXCoder: and definitely very old
10:05 PM CaptHindsight: dad had a major one at the end and mom Alzheimer's
10:06 PM XXCoder: mom has little bit demenia sadly but not too bad
10:06 PM XXCoder: she will be 70s soon
10:06 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: didn't recognize us the last few years
10:07 PM andypugh: Rab: You might like this. Is it possible to build a forge from things that you can buy on a Sunday afternoon? https://bodgesoc.blogspot.com/2014/06/forge.html
10:07 PM XXCoder: andy did you ever see myfordboy making of kiln? i loved that series
10:07 PM CaptHindsight: on the other hand, do you want to see stupid racist sociopathic old men running things to the age of 130?
10:08 PM andypugh: XXCoder: The beard is gone. I am noe an ugly 50 year old rather than a 70 year old with a great beard :-)
10:09 PM XXCoder: lol
10:09 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: theres perfect smbc comic of that lets see if I can find
10:10 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: don't listen to him, he looks like a handsome Santa Clause
10:10 PM XXCoder: LOL
10:11 PM roycroft: i used to grow a seasonal beard, but one spring i couldn't be bothered to shave it off
10:11 PM XXCoder: i basically cant grow a beard
10:12 PM CaptHindsight: I shave monthly
10:12 PM roycroft: and now, 10-15 years later (i can't even remember when i stopped shaving) i can't fathom how people shave daily
10:12 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight: Thats a Straw Man, or possibly a False Dichotomy. Or, maybe the Argument of the Beard. Or maybe all of the above. In general I have found I have respect for the _really_ old politicians. They typically have a more balanced and less partisan view.
10:12 PM CaptHindsight: haircuts are from 3-24 months
10:12 PM XXCoder: i do haircut before i look like bobo the clown
10:12 PM XXCoder: which means range from 5 months to a year
10:13 PM XXCoder: my hair grow maybe whole inch in a year so yeah lol
10:13 PM CaptHindsight: I get tired of it after it gets shoulder length
10:14 PM XXCoder: didn't find smbc I wanted to show but this is also good. https://www.smbc-comics.com/comics/1429973504-20150425.png
10:15 PM andypugh: I am in a bit of a quandry, my main skill seems to be beard growing, it is full, and even and I have a patricularly strong moustache. I can curl the ends in 4 months. But it’s white and makes me look like Santa. And I am not prepared to be Old yet (52 and single)
10:16 PM CaptHindsight: diet, exercise and hair dye
10:16 PM XXCoder: im 43 and single lol
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: you can be old in 20 more years
10:17 PM andypugh: XXCoder: I was 43 and single 9 years ago.
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: adopt
10:18 PM CaptHindsight: I can't imagine having babies again
10:18 PM XXCoder: i doubt i will have any kids
10:18 PM CaptHindsight: they would have to start at maybe 16
10:18 PM XXCoder: and damn me being dad, (shudder)
10:19 PM XXCoder: https://www.smbc-comics.com/comics/20100813.gif?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1281731883283
10:20 PM andypugh: XXCoder: If you like that, then OK. If you don’t then stop wasting time. Seriously, Your “ammunition” rapidly depletes.
10:21 PM XXCoder: lol yea
10:24 PM CaptHindsight: I'm looking for some place to go before I get too old to be wanted anywhere
10:24 PM XXCoder: me, ill just work till i die
10:25 PM CaptHindsight: China went nuts
10:25 PM XXCoder: ill never have enough to retire on. i started working well enough to put away for retirement at 39 so.. yeah lo
10:25 PM CaptHindsight: India seems to be following
10:28 PM XXCoder: crazy in what way
10:29 PM CaptHindsight: authoritarian
10:29 PM XXCoder: ahh yeah i dont know if they will be able to get out of it
10:29 PM XXCoder: sadly usa is getting similiar
10:29 PM andypugh: I was recently chatting to a very cute 23 year old. (I felt like an uncle, but a rather nuanced one), at level of hundreds of messages a day for a few months. I decided that I was completely comfortable with the idea of spending the remainder of my life raising a flock of Mini-Millies (that being her name) whilst acknoweldging that the scenario was implausible. Then, in the middle of a discussion of Reverse Polish
10:29 PM andypugh: Notation she sent a smiley, and has blanked me ever since. Which is rather confusing. (for context, we met in person and spent a week at a vintage vehicle rallly before starting to chat online, we are acquainted in RL)
10:29 PM XXCoder: odd
10:30 PM CaptHindsight: better to find now vs later
10:31 PM XXCoder: yea
10:31 PM CaptHindsight: some people are just flaky, this doesn't sound that unusual to me...
10:31 PM CaptHindsight: i hear similar from my 20 something son and friends all the time
10:32 PM andypugh: I will probably see her again in May. Can’t decide whether to ask what went wrong, or respect her apparent choice and ignore her
10:32 PM XXCoder: interesting. im not much into dating scene
10:32 PM roycroft: mayhap she's a very partisan algebraicist, and cannot see herself with an rpner
10:32 PM roycroft: did she ever show you her ti?
10:32 PM roycroft: conversely, did you ever show her your hp?
10:35 PM CaptHindsight: it happens less as women get older
10:36 PM CaptHindsight: you're not the first to tell me about this
10:36 PM XXCoder: roycroft: do you send penis pics unasked for?
10:36 PM roycroft: i have no such pictures
10:36 PM roycroft: while not prudish, i am modest
10:37 PM XXCoder: thats good, ladies i know they get annoyed with em
10:37 PM CaptHindsight: there's little effort in dick pics, send her a oil painting to show you have spent some effort :)
10:37 PM XXCoder: lol
10:38 PM XXCoder: anyway for every lady i know, its fastest way to go past friend zone into shit zone
10:38 PM CaptHindsight: pretty childish for men to do so
10:38 PM CaptHindsight: do these guys have moms or sisters?
10:38 PM andypugh: I was rather interested in trying to help her find a job. She just quailified from a good university. <wiki search> 9th in the world this year. With a First. And a prize for the best first. So she really has the world at her feet. But her family have no qualifications, and her dad is a cook in a takeaway. I really was invested in helping her find her future
10:38 PM CaptHindsight: wtf are they thinking?
10:38 PM XXCoder: yeah childish men trying to show part of body they think with more often.
10:40 PM andypugh: Yeah, I am really, genuinely wondering if someone sent a dick pic and she got idea it was from me. It’s that level of wierd
10:40 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: don't know the details, but when you're 23 you really don't know much and be easily spooked
10:41 PM XXCoder: andypugh: possible.
10:41 PM Wolf__: other possiblity is women of any age are just fucking batshit…
10:41 PM CaptHindsight: whats trivial to you at 50 is scary at 25
10:41 PM CaptHindsight: many of those as well
10:41 PM andypugh: Yeah, but, Reverse Polish?
10:43 PM CaptHindsight: Wolf__: especially with old sociopathic men molesting them
10:43 PM andypugh: She’s London-chinese and had a job as an Elf at Harrods. In fact that’s how the RP thing came up, she messaged me that the Casio family had been in Santa’s grotto.
10:44 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: if she's avoiding you then let it go
10:44 PM hazzy-m: "in the middle of a discussion of Reverse Polish Notation ..." Wow, that sounds like she had good potential! too bad :(
10:44 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: if she wants to contact you she will
10:45 PM XXCoder: indeed
10:46 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight: I have let it go, but I am really hung up on the “why”. it wasn’t romantic, we were just chatting and I was helping with her CV and job applications.
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: you might never know
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: some people make clean breaks
10:47 PM roycroft: i'm going to stick with my theory that she's strictly algebraic notation and all that stack pushing and popping is a deal breaker for her
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: others overlap, or make up stories or just ghost
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: spaces vs tabs
10:48 PM roycroft: or maybe she dropped her phone and it broke and she could not text any more
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: kidnapped by Iranian terrorists and is waiting for a white knight
10:49 PM andypugh: A complication is that I gave her some of my mum’s David Attenborough first editions from the 50s and she got them signed by the man himself. Now my mum wants them back and is giving me a hard time.
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: oh crap
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: politely ask for the books back, that's all
10:50 PM XXCoder: was it loaner or gift
10:50 PM andypugh: I did. messages not even read
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: not nice
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: try mail
10:51 PM andypugh: What, paper mail?
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: letter from an attorney
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: yeah something formal
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: or leave a written note
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: since she's ignoring text contact
10:52 PM roycroft: i don't think i'd engage a soliciter at this point
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: a relationship is one thing but it's like loaning property to a friend or acquaintance
10:53 PM roycroft: that's taking it to a level that is impossible to step back from
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: respect the break but she has some of your valuable property on loan
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: not a lawyer yet
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: last step
10:54 PM CaptHindsight: or those Italian restaurant owners you mentioned earlier :)
10:55 PM roycroft: andypugh indicated that he'll likely see her in the spring
10:55 PM andypugh: Indeed, given the choice between annnoyed parent and cordial relationships with Millie I would choose the latter. I can replace the books
10:55 PM roycroft: bringing the matter up in person then would probably be the most appropriate thing to do
10:55 PM roycroft: and mum can wait until then
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: if she shows up
10:56 PM roycroft: i'll just say this though
10:56 PM andypugh: Indeed. I am fairl;y sure that she had forgotten she had the the books. And they were of no value to her until Millie got them autographed.
10:56 PM roycroft: pondering on irc about the fickleness of women is unlikely to bring helpful advice
10:57 PM CaptHindsight: oh so millie got them signed
10:57 PM andypugh: What!? you mean that none of you are women in their 20s?
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: I've never dated anyone over 30
10:58 PM roycroft: if we knew the answers we would not be here
10:58 PM roycroft: we'd be with our young women :)
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: my daughter is 28
10:58 PM hazzy-m: roycroft: LOL, so true
10:58 PM XXCoder: i have neices 25 and 23 lol
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: just how it's worked out
10:58 PM CaptHindsight: I don't even know where single women my age hide
10:59 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight: That’s odd, I have never dated anyone under 30. it’s hard to say who wins there without a lot more context that I doubt we want to share.
11:00 PM CaptHindsight: all the interesting women have left
11:01 PM MarcelineVQ: where have all the buffalo gone
11:01 PM CaptHindsight: hiding from me anyway :)
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: MarcelineVQ: they live around here :)
11:02 PM roycroft: i used to date younger women sometimes
11:02 PM roycroft: i prefer women my own age though
11:02 PM roycroft: there's more experiential commonality
11:03 PM roycroft: a woman my age may have grown up in a totally different part of the country, with different upbringing and interests
11:03 PM roycroft: but we both remember the summer of love
11:03 PM roycroft: and kent state
11:03 PM roycroft: and things like that
11:04 PM CaptHindsight: I look like I'm in my 30's is part of it
11:19 PM andypugh: I was born in the Summer of Love. I was a student when nobody knew what caused AIDS. I am too old for the mdoern relaxed sexuality. I feel short-changed
11:21 PM roycroft: https://eugene.craigslist.org/tls/d/springfield-big-metal-mill/6804096416.html
11:21 PM roycroft: this looks kind of interesting
11:21 PM roycroft: but is it likely to be too much of a basket case to want to deal with?
11:22 PM roycroft: it's quite the frankenstein machine
11:22 PM andypugh: Interesting machine,
11:23 PM roycroft: it would not fit in my shop
11:23 PM roycroft: i'd need to build an extension for it
11:23 PM andypugh: Do you like interesting?
11:23 PM roycroft: sometimes
11:24 PM roycroft: that machine looks more intimidating interesting than fun interesting to me at the moment though
11:24 PM roycroft: but the asking price must be almost scrap value
11:25 PM andypugh: Looks like it has horizontal and vertical spindles. (good) Looks like a tiny taper (3MT) bad.
11:25 PM roycroft: yes
11:25 PM roycroft: it looks like a horizontal mill on which someone slapped a vertical head
11:26 PM andypugh: Was often a factory option
11:26 PM roycroft: and that's a huge table for a horizontal mill
11:27 PM andypugh: But: The horizontal has a tiny taper and the vertical is on the overarm bars.
11:27 PM roycroft: that head does not look like it was designed to fit that mill
11:27 PM andypugh: On balance, I wouldn’t
11:28 PM roycroft: if i had a huge shop with plenty of room i might get it just for fun
11:28 PM roycroft: but if i got something like that for my small shop i'd need to be able to use it and fairly soon
11:28 PM roycroft: i don't have room for a long-term project
11:29 PM roycroft: and i do have a horizontal and a vertial mill, although both are rather small
11:29 PM roycroft: i need to do some work to get the horizontal mill working
11:29 PM roycroft: it might be better to put my efforts into that
11:29 PM roycroft: it's an old sheldon
11:29 PM roycroft: nice little machine
11:30 PM andypugh: Room for a Huron? I love them
11:30 PM roycroft: but i only got the upper half of it - not the base nor the motor linkage
11:30 PM roycroft: although it did come with a motor
11:30 PM roycroft: i bought a stand for it that will work nicely
11:30 PM roycroft: but i have to fabricate a linkage for it
11:30 PM roycroft: and probably get a different motor
11:31 PM roycroft: the sheldon came with a variable speed motor that used spreading sheave halves to change the speed
11:31 PM roycroft: and i have that motor, but no control for it and no linkage at all
11:32 PM roycroft: a vfd and 2ph 3 phase motor would be a better solution, i think

11:36 PM roycroft: that is actually a lot more interesting to me
11:36 PM roycroft: from the same seller
11:36 PM roycroft: if that thing is flat and the cutterhead runs true it would be a great machine to have

11:44 PM andypugh: roycroft: The cutter head is unlikely to be eccentric. The axis might be out of parallel with the bed, but the blades can normally be adjusted.
11:45 PM andypugh: Night all
11:46 PM XXCoder: roycroft: dang nice planar
11:46 PM XXCoder: jointer that is
11:46 PM XXCoder: bring a way to measure flatness and twist
11:46 PM XXCoder: can be balance bar or just use indictor with mag base
