01:02 AM Wolf__: the irony of getting a Mazak ad while watching a junk built cnc machine video…
01:32 AM CaptHindsight: hah
02:42 AM Deejay: moin
03:11 AM russian_troll: selroc: Today's Log http://www.isaeff.net/logs/%23linuxcnc/2019-01-16.html
03:13 AM selroc: do not contact that pink_vampire she is a whatsapp troll
03:22 AM MarcelineVQ: dunno about that, pink_vampire has done vids of working on her equipment
03:22 AM MarcelineVQ: while responding to people from the irc
03:23 AM MarcelineVQ: So I guess the question to ask is, what is a whatsapp troll?
03:27 AM selroc: it a troll who shows up on whatsapp and then disappears
03:31 AM selroc: I found a trolling message from pink,in my whatsapp......
03:34 AM MarcelineVQ: Well I meant what do you mean by troll mostly. she's pretty normal in here at least
03:36 AM MarcelineVQ: like if someone opened a message to me with "hey ugly" I wouldn't think they were trolling, just being goofy
03:36 AM selroc: that is a message that refers to some weird sexual stuff and I don't think it is serious
03:37 AM MarcelineVQ: my first reaction would be to think that their account is compromised in that case
03:37 AM selroc: but she asked me for my cell phone and I gave it, then she disappears and I can't find her
03:38 AM selroc: I don;t know if a whatsapp account can be compromised that way
03:38 AM MarcelineVQ: everything can be compromised that way
03:39 AM selroc: so to be nice we have to warn her that the account has problems
03:40 AM MarcelineVQ: And to take care to not give out phone numbers to people acting strangely <_<
03:41 AM selroc: can you contact her
03:41 AM rmu: i don't really know whatsapp but i thought you kinda needed a cell number to message somebody?
03:41 AM rmu: so whats the point in giving someone your phone number over whatsapp? they already have it?
03:41 AM selroc: do you have a email address?
03:43 AM MarcelineVQ: I don't have contact info
03:43 AM rmu: btw, googling for "pink_vampire" results in 200 mio results
03:51 AM selroc: there is no hope then :-) , last resort is waiting for her to show up here
04:16 AM XXCoder1: Wolf__: nah! not ironic. smart marketing. "look our stuff is good. mnot that shite"
04:17 AM XXCoder1: Jymmm: better design than reprap lol
04:18 AM XXCoder1: "Without DVD ROM Mechanism" then uses cd/dvd drive stepper and screw/
04:18 AM XXCoder1: floppy actually I think
04:22 AM XXCoder1: clickspring. awesome
04:48 AM jthornton: morning
04:48 AM XXCoder1: yo
05:17 AM Tom_L: morning
05:17 AM XXCoder1: yo
05:19 AM Tom_L: 31F and fog
05:20 AM XXCoder1: 32f and no fog
05:31 AM jthornton: 32°F Fog/Mist
06:50 AM methods_: http://www.fdk.com/whatsnew-e/release20181217-e.html
06:50 AM methods_: smd solid state battery
06:56 AM Loetmichel: maaan... just was "ill at home" for last week... and promplty we dan out of paper towels for the bathroom and bosses wife ordered the cheapest stuff there is: recycled, thin that you can look thru and smelling like unwashed feet. the whole toilet at work smells like said feet now... waht chemical do they use in those paper towels to make it THAT smelly??? (and why do i have such a cheapass
06:56 AM Loetmichel: "controller" boss wife?)
07:10 AM sensille: bring your own :D
07:10 AM rmu: Loetmichel: old 30 year old vintage DDR stock?
07:11 AM Loetmichel: rmu: sure smells like it ,)
07:16 AM rmu: Loetmichel: could be something like butyric acid or something similar. Some bacteria produce it.
07:49 AM jthornton: some sneaky animal found out last night what an electric fence is lol
07:57 AM Loetmichel: jthornton: heard the noises or saw the destruction to the fence this morning?
07:57 AM XXCoder1: or witnessed it?
07:58 AM XXCoder1: or just assumed that it happened? okay that covers all possibvilities lol
07:58 AM XXCoder1: well almost anyway
07:58 AM * Loetmichel once saw whats left if a rat decides to jump on 800A 400V three phase power rails...
07:58 AM Loetmichel: ... NOT much ;)
07:59 AM Loetmichel: but the stink in that cabinet was pretty overwhelming
08:00 AM XXCoder1: youre tasting and smelling the rat
08:02 AM Loetmichel: indeed
08:03 AM XXCoder1: well off to bed laters
08:04 AM jthornton: the insulators will move and the wire slacks when they bounce back
08:04 AM jthornton: cheap plastic insulator on the gate
09:58 AM Jymmm: XXCoder1: I thought it was pretty good =)
11:15 AM fragalot: Hi
12:28 PM gloops: i see the little leader in France had a go at the UK today, maybe he should try sorting his own mess out
12:34 PM fragalot: lol
12:34 PM fragalot: gloops: why would he when he could just distract people instead?
12:35 PM gloops: yes thats what hes on with
12:38 PM fragalot: gloops: care to wager in on the outcome this time?
12:39 PM fragalot: I'm guessing she'll come out alright, because getting stuck without a .gov right now would probably not help things
12:39 PM gloops: the tories will win, probably by 10
12:39 PM gloops: DUP have pledged support, there might be 1 or 2 tories do the untinkable
12:39 PM gloops: unthinkable
12:41 PM gloops: there will be more no confidence votes, if Labour commit to a second referendum then some tories might switch
12:42 PM fragalot: can they call these votes in such rapid succession?
12:42 PM fragalot: or is there a cooldown period like the vote against may directly
12:43 PM gloops: i think they can be called if there is good reason, normally the main opposition party, but the other smaller parties can try
12:44 PM gloops: i dont think there is a statutory minimum gap
12:44 PM fragalot: if there isn't, then why don't they call one every week?
12:45 PM gloops: they could, but theyd look stupid
12:45 PM fragalot: they're politicians
12:45 PM fragalot: half of them are
12:45 PM fragalot: :P
12:45 PM gloops: tbh im not up on the details of no confidence votes, only ever been one other in my lifetime
12:45 PM SpeedEvil: Calling frivolous votes means you are less likely to get through non frivolous votes as the people you want to vote for you get pise off
12:46 PM fragalot: gloops: you could learn a thing or 2 from our government then
12:46 PM rmu: fragalot: there a 600 of them, clearly more than half of them is stupid ;) as in every other group that is large enough
12:46 PM fragalot: rmu: 50% of them are dumber than the rest of them!
12:47 PM gloops: labour isnt even leading the polls, even if the government was brought down and an election held, labour would probably lose seats
12:47 PM rmu: fragalot: my point is that given a large enough group of people adding more people just makes the average more stupid
12:48 PM rmu: fragalot: this sentence can be made true for any percentage ;)
12:48 PM fragalot: :D
12:48 PM fragalot: that's the beauty of it
12:49 PM gloops: politicians are unlikely to vote for less government, thats like coal miners voting for cleaner air
12:52 PM rmu: got my vers.by probes today - curious how they perform
12:52 PM fragalot: your what now?
12:53 PM rmu: belorussian touch probes
12:53 PM fragalot: who'mever is speeching in UK parliament now isn't holding back, jesus
12:53 PM rmu: https://vers.by/en/
12:54 PM fragalot: rmu: Ooo, shiny
12:54 PM rmu: fragalot: you can hear them on the other side of the channel?
12:55 PM fragalot: haha
12:55 PM gloops: at the other end of the spectrum, i got my £4 laser cross hair thing
12:55 PM gloops: ill make a holder with screw adjustment for it
12:55 PM fragalot: rmu: care to let us know how well they work? the price sounds like there's no way, but the renders look great :P
12:55 PM rmu: gloops: those touch probes are very affordable at about 150€. look at the price of a renishaw-set.
12:56 PM gloops: oh i dont know 150 is a lot for wood
12:57 PM fragalot: you can barely get a good edge finder for that for metalworking
12:57 PM fragalot: my current (haimer style) touch probe was €450.. and that doesn't feed back automatically
12:58 PM gloops: with batch things i set a rigid edge/square now, only 0 once
12:58 PM fragalot: forgot what make it was, but it's slim & german
12:58 PM rmu: hmm. those spinning edge finders are not that expensive IIRC. i got one for about 15€ or so. probably isn't super accurate, but more than 1/100 isn't doable with this method anyways
12:58 PM fragalot: rmu: i've had bad luck with the cheap ones
12:58 PM fragalot: and the higher end ones are VERY repeatable
12:58 PM rmu: fragalot: it's 2 rods connected with a spring
12:59 PM fragalot: rmu: it's the surface in between, how perpendicular & how well lapped
12:59 PM fragalot: it doesn't matter that much for center finding, but for edge finding it makes quite a few microns difference
01:00 PM rmu: i don't care about microns, my mill only positions to about 1/100mm ;)
01:00 PM rmu: (the cnc one)
01:07 PM rmu: my biggest source of error with the vers probe will probably be the collet
01:08 PM fragalot: rmu: normally they have a way to adjust for that
01:11 PM rmu: it should
01:14 PM fragalot: rmu: got a picture of "the real thing" ?
01:16 PM rmu: tomorrow
01:16 PM rmu: left it at work
01:16 PM fragalot: k
01:16 PM rmu: i also got the toolsetter
01:18 PM gloops: the tories win by 19 i think
01:18 PM gloops: good result
01:19 PM fragalot: not far off your guess, well done
01:20 PM gloops: well she only has a majority of 9 lol, 19 is very good for the tories
01:21 PM fragalot: corbyn sounds upset
01:22 PM gloops: the polls show labour slipping behind, he probably will never be the prime minister, if/when he loses the next general election he has got to go
01:24 PM gloops: in the midst of all this chaos the opposition should be well ahead - he has had 0 impact
01:25 PM fragalot: he's, as far as I can tell from here, not actually put forth anything useful
01:25 PM fragalot: just saying that "if we were in power, we'd get to bake the cake, AND eat it"
01:26 PM gloops: in these times, his problem is he is a devout euro-sceptic - the labour party today is mainly pro-EU
01:26 PM gloops: the old labour party hated the EU they saw it as a neo-liberal club for bankers
01:27 PM Rab: Is that wrong?
01:27 PM gloops: i wouldnt say so
01:44 PM SpeedEvil: gloops: Corbyn is of the 'crash out' mindset.
01:45 PM fragalot: SpeedEvil: but without harming free trade, expats, or free movement of people
01:45 PM SpeedEvil: fragalot: Also, there will be unicorns singing the red flag.
01:45 PM fragalot: don't be ridiculous
01:45 PM fragalot: you can't "sing" a flag
02:00 PM gloops: thats the beauty of being in opposition, you can promise anything
02:00 PM fragalot: and don't have to deliver on anything
02:00 PM fragalot: just complain & say you'd do it better
02:00 PM gloops: i think we should just bank the money and wait till march 29th
02:00 PM fragalot: but IF the government does well, you can claim it's due to yourself too
02:01 PM fragalot: gloops: i'm not so sure that the 39BN would "disappear" even if it's a hard brexit
02:01 PM gloops: obviously we'd be willing to talk about it lol
02:01 PM fragalot: ie, how much of that number are pure EU expendatures, and how much of them are direct contracts the UK made, via EU?
02:02 PM gloops: you never ever pay until the job is finished
02:03 PM fragalot: sure, but if they're jobs you have ordered, and they are on-going.. they will finish eventually
02:03 PM fragalot: if you then do not pay, even though the other party did exactly as described in the contract..... well there's a word for that.
02:04 PM gloops: and theres plenty of things we never had
02:06 PM gloops: the EU might have problems checking these bills - seeing as its books have never been signed off
02:08 PM rmu: what does that even mean. signed off. by who?
02:09 PM gloops: rmu are you saying the EU is above accountability?
02:09 PM rmu: no you say that
02:09 PM gloops: no, im saying no auditor has ever signed the books off
02:09 PM fragalot: I think you may be mistaken there
02:10 PM rmu: what auditor?
02:11 PM rmu: you suggest that 28 eu countries conspire in cooking the books?
02:11 PM gloops: you mean nobody checks the accounts?
02:11 PM gloops: theyre online arent they? like everyone elses, Trumps books are online
02:11 PM rmu: with governments such as the polish and hungarian conspiring with denmark and netherlands?
02:11 PM gloops: but no - no EU accounts
02:12 PM rmu: i don't care about what random numbers trump puts online
02:12 PM gloops: in any dispute in normal business, where its one parties word against another, the books are presented
02:13 PM fragalot: "last year we spent 11.2BN on mass scale espionage"
02:13 PM fragalot: NO country or official conglomerate publishes their books in detail
02:13 PM rmu: so what. you are you suggesting that your prime minister is conspiring with the other eu members?
02:14 PM fragalot: and i'm pretty sure that the 39BN has been thoroughly vetted by the UK's numbercrunchers, given that it's part of their job description to see how much the country spends on it's foreign contracts
02:14 PM gloops: http://0.0.7.224/10/13/eu-accounts-not-signed-off-22nd-year-row/
02:15 PM rmu: i was under the impression that the 39bn number is more or less undisputed and the easiest part of the whole shebang
02:16 PM gloops: it was pledged on the condition a trade deal was agreed
02:16 PM rmu: funny ip address
02:16 PM fragalot: that kinda implies they don't dispute the number
02:16 PM gloops: im sure a lot of goodwill on the part of the UK was included in that figure
02:17 PM gloops: the true debt is half that
02:17 PM rmu: why should there be
02:18 PM gloops: we entered the negotiations as friends and neighbours
02:18 PM gloops: it now seems we may have been mistaken
02:19 PM fragalot: is that what you tell your plumber when he comes over? :P
02:20 PM gloops: i am my plumber lol
02:20 PM rmu: 0.0.0.0/8 is not a routeable ip network
02:21 PM fragalot: rmu: it is if you somehow register the "0" TLD :3
02:21 PM gloops: https://order-order.com/2016/10/13/eu-accounts-not-signed-off-22nd-year-row/
02:22 PM gloops: Some examples of waste include a project where the team tasked with repaving a 1 kilometre footpath in Italy ended up buying a €4,000 mountain bike, a €3,500 panoramic spyglass and donating €10,000 to a local church from their budget.
02:22 PM rmu: qtf is that
02:23 PM rmu: where there is money there will be corruption
02:23 PM rmu: an austrian bank managed to sink 20bn€ in croatia
02:23 PM gloops: one dutch trawler gets a quarter of our fish quota https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2854348/One-Dutch-trawler-gets-quarter-England-s-entire-fish-quota-English-fishermen-allowed-two-crates-worth-50.html?fbclid=IwAR1_SDG-y-gLHZR5292PC64pWsbelgnRGhPt6lslL4npqWBcD7wy8Uw_PmI
02:24 PM gloops: we never signed up for any of this!
02:24 PM fragalot: thing is
02:24 PM fragalot: you kinda did
02:24 PM rmu: i detect whining
02:25 PM gloops: well alls im saying, some adjustment to the bill might be necessary
02:26 PM gloops: youre not telling me they dont go over their quotas, we dont know what theyre taking back
02:26 PM rmu: but the number is not the issue
02:26 PM gloops: oh good lol
02:28 PM rmu: if there was a vote tomorrow in parliament and the number would be 19bn it would also fail
02:29 PM fragalot: in any case if the number was up for dispute it would get settled in den hague
02:29 PM MarcelineVQ: fishing has always been a shitshow everywhere you go, it's one of those industries, little accountability or way way misplaced accountability.
02:29 PM MarcelineVQ: for example around here it's known to happen that if you catch something you shouldn't have caught, say some fish or mammal that some whiny special interest group decided was cute and there's a fishery rep on board your boat they'll order you to toss the whole thing, tons of dead animals because you picked up a single wrong one that you don't even have control over, and is already dead anyway.
02:30 PM MarcelineVQ: *tons of dead animal wasted
02:30 PM gloops: the DUP - irish unionist party holds the balance of power in the UK now, and they know a bit about negotiating, May must listen to them now, they argue that only half the 39 should be paid
02:30 PM gloops: pending a trade deal result
02:30 PM fragalot: and den hague will have the final ruling about that
02:30 PM rmu: gloops: and then they would accept the backstop?
02:31 PM gloops: rmu no backstop, not in any shape or form
02:31 PM fragalot: because the EU might not have any legal power, the world court still might have a say in the matter
02:31 PM gloops: fragalot thats a can that can be kicked down the road for eternity, if you havent paid
02:31 PM fragalot: and I can imagine that getting trade deals with a country that has actively broken contracts might not be ideal
02:32 PM gloops: they will deal, the UK is a big customer
02:33 PM rmu: there are probably british assets in exzess of 39bn abroad that could be "leveraged"
02:33 PM gloops: where?
02:33 PM rmu: forfeiture of ships or airplanes. i don't think anybody wants to go there
02:33 PM gloops: nobody will go there
02:34 PM rmu: like that argentinian vessel that was appropriated by a us hedge fonds
02:34 PM fragalot: all I want is for brexit to be delayed until june, that way my GF can get her belgian nationality & you guys can close the borders :P
02:35 PM gloops: EU parliament elections in July? we cant be in the EU without MEPs
02:35 PM rmu: the problem with those negotiations is that no single coherent opinion with majority exists in british parliament
02:35 PM fragalot: I'll settle for end of may
02:35 PM gloops: all our MEPs step down in March
02:36 PM gloops: unlikely any extension will go beyond July
02:36 PM fragalot: doesn't need to
02:36 PM fragalot: end of may is fine
02:38 PM rmu: end of may wouldn't be good for my wales-trip in june
02:38 PM gloops: rmu correct, but the cunning brexiteer David Davis got the house to vote for article 50 with a fixed leaving date, in the event of no majority for any deal, we still leave - without one
02:38 PM fragalot: i'm more interested in being able to continue to afford my house with our dual income :P
02:40 PM gloops: he also penned that brilliant resignation letter with 'come on England' as the first letter for each line lol
02:44 PM gloops: or something like that
02:47 PM rmu: you can advertise there via https://www.messagespace.co.uk/
02:47 PM rmu: "We influence the political debate and shape the arguments ahead of the mainstream media."
02:47 PM fragalot: hey a "local" (ish) seller has started selling pantorouter kits
02:48 PM gloops: i might knock up some drawings for one fragalot
02:48 PM gloops: they might even sell
02:48 PM fragalot: https://www.gereedschappro.nl/overig/pantorouter-kit-voor-43-mm-freeshals-bijvoorbeeld-de-mafell-fm1000/27829
02:48 PM fragalot: why not just support matthias & buy his drawings?
02:49 PM fragalot: the price is reasonable, and all of the kinks have been worked out already
02:49 PM gloops: probably is reasonable for an ally kit, id make it with wood i guess
02:50 PM fragalot: I meant the drawings
02:50 PM gloops: i am thinking about making a cnc just for joints, similar format
02:51 PM fragalot: so a small horizontal setup
02:51 PM fragalot: can you not just mount the head on your mill sideways?
02:51 PM gloops: yeah, i made a vertical work surface for my router - works so well but limited by the length down to the floor
02:52 PM fragalot: dig a hole
02:52 PM gloops: well, i havent found the limit a problem, but a horizontal set up would be ideal
02:53 PM gloops: alternative could be to set a horizontal spindle on the z axis
02:53 PM fragalot: that's what I meant
02:54 PM gloops: probably easier
03:02 PM * JT-Shop attempts to balance the bank accounts and clean his desk
03:14 PM gloops: PM to make Downing Street statement at 10pm tonight < most unusual
03:21 PM Jymmm: Ok, I like this very much JT-Shop you might even make one for you to use (yes yes I know when it's free time) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfdkwoxQXA8
03:23 PM Jymmm: JT-Shop: He shoes how to make a "saddle" to hold a grinder that travels along a 2" or 3" square tubing
03:23 PM Jymmm: shows*
03:23 PM JT-Shop: what is he grinding?
03:23 PM Jymmm: he says he's done steeel sheet and tubing, as well as stone, tile, etc
03:24 PM Jymmm: HEs not really grinding, but cutting
03:24 PM Jymmm: grinder with a cutoff wheel
03:25 PM Jymmm: JT-Shop: HE has a 8ft travel
03:25 PM fragalot: gotta love how creative people are with grinders on YT
03:25 PM Jymmm: fragalot: True, but this is impressive. I'm suuprised harborfraight hasn't gotten these made
03:26 PM fragalot: it's pretty neat, yeah
03:26 PM XXCoder1: and sometimes very caviar with safety lol he does better than most and still ehh at points
03:26 PM fragalot: just pop a grinder blade in your tracksaw & go
03:27 PM Jymmm: XXCoder1: I didn't see any fingers in the video =)
03:27 PM XXCoder1: 9:45
03:27 PM Jymmm: ...cut off
03:27 PM XXCoder1: lol
03:28 PM methods_: mmmmmm caviar safety
03:28 PM Jymmm: Safter 99th
03:28 PM methods_: don't eat too much caviar at one time
03:28 PM Jymmm: safety 99th
03:31 PM JT-Shop: that must be horrible to cut stock with a 4 1/2" cut off blade lol
03:31 PM fragalot: not that bad with the thin bladezs
03:31 PM fragalot: that stray "z" is going to be the end of me >;<
03:32 PM methods_: very caviar
03:45 PM Deejay: gn8
03:49 PM macgalempsy: hello
03:53 PM macgalempsy: https://peopoly.net/pages/moai-200-sla-printer?mc_cid=5178722952&mc_eid=dfc3097335
03:54 PM macgalempsy: just got an email from these guys about their new printer. it seems to have a pretty nice build volume and the results are pretty amazing.
04:00 PM SpeedEvil: Has anyone ever had an email from any guys showing crappy results?
04:01 PM macgalempsy: heh, good point
04:02 PM macgalempsy: however, the facebook forum has some pretty spectacular results from the modelling world
04:05 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop i cut all the steel for my mill with one :D
04:05 PM Tom_L: wasn't _that_ bad
04:08 PM Tom_L: andypugh done any scanning with the faro arm yet?
04:08 PM JT-Shop: band saw first cut off wheel as a last resort for me
04:09 PM Tom_L: no band saw here
04:09 PM JT-Shop: I use a jig saw on thin stuff :)
04:09 PM Tom_L: i've done that plenty
04:53 PM andypugh: Tom_L: No, still haven’t set up the kins. I was away all Christmas / NY and haven’t got back in to anything.
04:53 PM andypugh: Did I show my band-saw mount for cuttting off work on the lathe?
04:53 PM andypugh: (When it’s too big to just part-off)
04:54 PM Tom_L: i think i saw that
04:54 PM Tom_L: but not sure
04:55 PM andypugh: https://photos.app.goo.gl/3Jfrutna1KZ8uCFv8
04:56 PM Tom_L: no i missed that one
05:25 PM jthornton: do you rotate while cutting?
05:29 PM andypugh: No.
05:29 PM andypugh: Well, not yet, but then I have only used it once so far.
05:30 PM andypugh: I finally made a swarf tray and tailstock DRO for the lathe, and then haven’t used the lathe at all since…. https://photos.app.goo.gl/GrAo2q1ti8KHZeFz8
05:34 PM jthornton: I know how that goes
05:35 PM jthornton: I like how you have the tailstock tools standing up, I need to fit my Samson with a rack
05:37 PM andypugh: jthornton: Here is the STL file for the taper tooling: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3285522
05:38 PM jthornton: cool, I didn't notice the bushings
05:39 PM andypugh: The tailstock DRO is a bit different to most, I modelled a whole new back for the caliper slider, and it is held in place with magnets: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3238845
05:42 PM jthornton: pretty slick
07:59 PM MacGalempsy: yo
07:59 PM norias: howdy
08:01 PM MacGalempsy: makin chips?
08:03 PM norias: not right now
08:04 PM norias: planning on making chips, and planning for other people to make chips
08:04 PM norias: i'm studying cnc milling machine design
08:04 PM norias: so, i'm thinking about cobbling together a spindle test bed
08:04 PM norias: something with an X and a Z
08:04 PM norias: that i can bolt blocks of aluminum or steel to
08:04 PM norias: and a v-block to hold the spindle in
08:05 PM norias: okie doke, then
10:43 PM ziper: can you use a horizontal mill as a surface grinder?
11:06 PM Wolf__: maybe, but there wont be much mill after swapping out parts to make that work
11:19 PM SpeedEvil: You can use a vertical mill.
11:20 PM ziper: Why not? can't you put the disk in there like any other plain cutter?
11:20 PM SpeedEvil: (and cup wheels)
11:20 PM SpeedEvil: The shielding tends to have to be rather better for surface grinders, for obvious reasons
11:21 PM Wolf__: I doubt the results would come out surface grinder like from screw feed x and dovetails ways
11:21 PM SpeedEvil: I think you would probably need to replace the ways at least - and the positioners, and at that point, there isn't a whole lot left.
11:21 PM Wolf__: high speed spindle
11:21 PM SpeedEvil: It depends what you want. If it's to get a surface mostly flat, once, you can use damn near anything.
11:22 PM SpeedEvil: I've seen a very nice surface grinder made using HDPE cutting boards as the ways.
11:22 PM SpeedEvil: It was just very, very limited in capability, but fine for what it was wanted for.
11:22 PM ziper: whats special about a surface grinder's ways?
11:22 PM SpeedEvil: (trimming rough stone tiles)
11:22 PM SpeedEvil: Aren't tehy all pressuriesed oil ways, not regular?
11:23 PM Wolf__: not much special about the ways, just low friction
11:23 PM Wolf__: mine only has one shot oiler
11:24 PM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/Pop9vFT.jpg https://i.imgur.com/N0xB9JI.jpg
11:25 PM SpeedEvil: I've sort of entertained the silly idea of making a surface grinder from a surface plate.
11:25 PM SpeedEvil: With just one good axis, and the other roughly supported on air bearings free to move in XY.
11:26 PM SpeedEvil: Only useful for making stuff parallel (well, blocks would change that, but...)
11:27 PM ziper: one of the machines has the motor mounted underneath, and on the side of the machine is a 5 speed pulley setup driving nothing
11:27 PM ziper: any idea what that was for
11:27 PM Wolf__: define side of mahcine
11:27 PM ziper: picture soon
11:27 PM Wolf__: on the table?
11:29 PM Wolf__: my surface grinder also has a 3450rpm spindle, doubt a older mill would enjoy that speed for any amount of time
11:32 PM SpeedEvil: Just double the wheel size, half the RPM
11:32 PM SpeedEvil: :)
11:33 PM Wolf__: lol
11:33 PM Wolf__: 20” wheels?
11:34 PM SpeedEvil: A shaper would almost be the right machine to convert
11:34 PM Wolf__: $450, not much converting needed https://i.imgur.com/ViaAewx.jpg
11:35 PM SpeedEvil: Indeed
11:35 PM SpeedEvil: Was that $450 with the mag-chuck?
11:35 PM Wolf__: $15 for the wall worth of wheels also
11:35 PM ziper: https://i.imgur.com/LFvcxfF.jpg
11:35 PM Wolf__: yup
11:35 PM SpeedEvil: Wolf__: steal.
11:35 PM ziper: see the bit above the pneumatic?
11:36 PM ziper: I have no need for a surface grider, was just curious
11:37 PM Wolf__: weird, not sure what that is for, stuff on the backside right?
11:38 PM ziper: just a 4 or 5 speed pulley
11:39 PM Wolf__: for power feed or gear hobbing maybe?
11:41 PM Wolf__: the K&T #2 horizontal I looked at buying at one point had a feed linked output on the end of the table for doing helical stuff
11:42 PM ziper: but with a belt?
11:43 PM Wolf__: yeah, usually belt to the dividing head
11:43 PM Wolf__: I think
11:44 PM Wolf__: hell who knows, could be for some odd options like a slotting head or something also
11:49 PM ziper: one of the machines has a little electical box labeled 'cycle start' with a bunch of air lines running out. is that actually capable of running a program with the pneumatic part chuck and feed?
11:53 PM Wolf__: maybe? dunno
11:53 PM Wolf__: sleep time for me tho
