01:13 AM CaptHindsight: Flex Glue competes against JB Weld, Loctite, and Gorilla glue using wood, brick, PVC, and metal
02:27 AM Deejay: moin
02:27 AM Deejay: happy new year
03:11 AM Vq: Happy new year and such

03:37 AM Deejay: whats wrong with you o0
03:37 AM XXCoder: lol
03:37 AM Deejay: lots of crazy characters
03:37 AM XXCoder: accent marks
03:37 AM XXCoder: lots of em

03:40 AM Deejay: look
03:42 AM Deejay: XXCoder
03:42 AM XXCoder: looking
03:42 AM XXCoder: yep thats lot of accent marks lol
03:42 AM XXCoder: yours is rendered very differently
03:43 AM XXCoder: wonder if thats due to klanguage os is set to
03:43 AM Deejay: i think thats because of different fonts
03:43 AM XXCoder: thats also likely
03:43 AM Deejay: not all fonts support all unicode characters and so on
03:44 AM XXCoder: I use Hack fon
03:45 AM Deejay: dunno what that is
03:45 AM XXCoder: its one of best monospace font
03:45 AM XXCoder: and open source also
03:45 AM XXCoder: https://sourcefoundry.org/hack/
03:46 AM Deejay: ah
04:09 AM Deejay: hmm, trying to install it
04:57 AM jthornton: morning

07:00 AM Tom_L: just a bunch of unrecognizable characters
07:00 AM Tom_L: sry
07:01 AM XXCoder: lol its happy new year with tons of accent marks
09:23 AM Roguish: yoh, HAPPY HOLIDAZE AND NEW YEAR TO ALL
09:32 AM gloops: a decent lathe https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Colchester-Lathe-Vary-Large-11-3-Phase-2-Drop-Industrial-Accessories/273631328968?
09:44 AM flyback: are those power hammers
09:44 AM flyback: like early 1900's
09:44 AM flyback: are they hydrolic
09:45 AM flyback: I can't imaging pure mechanical would last long
09:45 AM flyback: ah air piston
09:45 AM flyback: same thing
09:47 AM gloops: which one?
09:48 AM flyback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFpkfbqepP4
09:49 AM gloops: thats ants
09:49 AM Tom_L: he's confused
09:50 AM flyback: oh wrong paste
09:50 AM flyback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFpkfbqepP4
09:50 AM flyback: BMCC gloops
09:50 AM gloops: same one
09:50 AM flyback: WTF
09:50 AM flyback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNW5i0gZ4Ls
09:50 AM * Tom_L smacks flyback
09:51 AM flyback: BITE
09:51 AM flyback: MY
09:51 AM flyback: "CANUCK"
09:51 AM flyback: ................................................................CANUCK
09:51 AM flyback: i FIGURED they had to be hydrolic or air driven
09:51 AM flyback: I couldn't imagine pure mechanical lasting 100 yrs
09:51 AM gloops: a lot of the big hammers - were lifted by steam, the weight of the hammer did the work going down
09:51 AM flyback: or 10 yrs even
09:51 AM flyback: gloops, that's still non mechanical
09:52 AM flyback: I seen ones that use diesel or gasoline to lift a large weight then drops by gravity
09:52 AM flyback: like road busters
09:52 AM flyback: they use a explosion to shoot the weight up
09:52 AM Tom_L: pile drivers do the same thing
09:53 AM veek: just curious, is it possible to focus a pair of microscope lenses using a vernier caliper and a micrometer?
09:55 AM gloops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L22NfbRZHBg
09:55 AM gloops: i dont know anything about microscopes veek
09:56 AM veek: hey gloops, how much pressure does that hydraulic hammer inflict? 100T
09:56 AM gloops: much much more
09:57 AM gloops: an ordinary hammer in your hand gives about 50 tons psi
09:57 AM veek: wo hmm
09:57 AM gloops: well a sledgehammer, 20 tonnes for a couple pound hammer
10:00 AM flyback: I imagine if that was a crank driven direct drive hammer it wouldn't last long
10:00 AM flyback: well then again that's how some auto shredders are
10:02 AM gloops: be ok with a torque release on the crankshaft, like a clutch that slips on impact
10:03 AM gloops: so you are only driving the hammer to attain velocity - not during impact
10:03 AM flyback: ah true
10:03 AM flyback: have you ever seen any history channel etc shows on auto shredders
10:03 AM flyback: or the mine ore shredders
10:04 AM flyback: and they use carbid or titanium teeth
10:04 AM flyback: like $100/tooth
10:04 AM gloops: no not seen any
10:04 AM flyback: and they last 24 hrs
10:04 AM flyback: it's like HOLY SHIT
10:04 AM gloops: 24 hours is a lot of crushing though
10:05 AM flyback: oh I knoww they get their 100 x #
10:05 AM flyback: but it's just scary to think about
10:06 AM flyback: mabye it was a tunnel boring machine
10:06 AM gloops: they had some big coal cutters here with impressive teeth, Dosco
10:08 AM gloops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKwCr16-apE
10:08 AM flyback: yeah those are cool
10:22 AM treats: Hi all and happy New Year! I'm hoping for some pointers for a project I'm looking to embark on this year. Basically, I want to build myself a custom CNC machine that will be roughly 4' x 4' x 4', with 4 feet on the z axis. It's not for a bit and I'll be using a claw on the end. I'm wondering if anyone has any pointers or thoughts on the z control that will allow for something like telescoping so, at height, it won't
10:22 AM treats: extend too far into the 'work area'
10:26 AM gloops: hm 4ft z
10:26 AM treats: It might not need to be so dramatic, in reality, but I want it to live overhead...
10:27 AM gloops: have the rails above?
10:27 AM gloops: i mean the x rails
10:27 AM gloops: im not really getting an image of this machine tbh
10:30 AM treats: Basically, I want to be able to move this arm around in a 4x4x4 cube -- and ideally I'd like to be able to walk underneath, but not necessary for v1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slP9ujByaLI
10:31 AM treats: more of a claw than an arm. The claw will be mounted perpendicular to the work surface.
10:44 AM SpeedEvil: treats: 2d + winch + claw.
10:44 AM SpeedEvil: :)
10:44 AM gloops: thats like a teddy grabber
10:45 AM gloops: so the x rails at the top, the winch runs along the y on a horizontal plate
10:46 AM gloops: dont forget you need a piece of lead in the prizes
10:47 AM treats: I don't want my winch to rotate around all over though. I'll keep looking at winches though..
10:48 AM Tom_L: mount it to an overhead gantry
10:50 AM gloops: if you want the claw on a rigid z, but dont want the z to travel 4ft above the machine
10:51 AM gloops: you could have a series of 'z' plates, tubes, sections or whatever, maybe call them za zb zc
10:52 AM gloops: gonna get tricky with g-codes
10:52 AM SpeedEvil: treats: more seriously - how much do you care about accuracy
10:52 AM SpeedEvil: and what are the forces imposed by your tooling
10:53 AM Tom_L: couldn't be much, it's a hobby servo
10:54 AM treats: Not extremely precise, I'd prioritize speed over accuracy, but it should be able to grab... a cottonball I guess.
10:54 AM gloops: this job might be a candidate for a hexapod design
10:55 AM treats: This guy built something that could help. Doesn't really solve the overhead 4' though..
10:55 AM gloops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_UmhUjZhNo&t=35s
10:57 AM treats: Dang, that's incredible.
10:57 AM Tom_L: https://cleverleverage.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/top-race-rc-excavator-with-claw-logging-attachment.jpg
10:59 AM gloops: 360 arm
11:02 AM treats: https://blog.arduino.cc/2017/03/13/winchbot-is-a-robotic-arm-composed-of-3-winches-and-5-servos/
11:04 AM gloops: yes same thing treats but cables instead of rigid struts
11:05 AM gloops: a bit like the maslow machine
11:05 AM treats: yeah, pretty neat. Definitely something I need to research a bit more before jumping into. x,y,z makes sense to me.
11:07 AM gloops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtJ5Z3phDhs
11:08 AM gloops: theres always an xyz, if you start getting into weird designs you need non-trivial kinematics to resolve movement into xyz
12:12 PM fragalot: 'spu
12:12 PM fragalot: 'sup
01:38 PM CaptHindsight: I'll take spu for $100
01:41 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: but they're down 2.28%
03:20 PM gloops: worst xmas TV ever
03:20 PM fragalot: It's TV. when is it ever good?
03:23 PM gloops: well you expect it to be better at xmas
03:24 PM Tom_L: i do?
03:24 PM Tom_L: you're assuming alot there
03:24 PM gloops: cheap old router there https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Axis-CNC-Router-Engraver-Milling-Machine-ROVER-BIESSE-2800X760X100MM-PROJECT/264110520701?
03:24 PM fragalot: gloops: the only difference is that on xmas, they put on die hard
03:25 PM Tom_L: yeah some of the old old ones were banned due to content
03:25 PM fragalot: interesting designs
03:25 PM gloops: i dont watch a lot of TV but when you flick through pages of channels and there is NOTHING worth watching
03:26 PM Tom_L: if it's ever on it's just for background noise
03:26 PM fragalot: that's when you get netflix and flick through pages of that crap instead
03:26 PM fragalot: so you switch to youtube
03:26 PM fragalot: and wind up in "that weird part of youtube"
03:26 PM gloops: 8kw spindle, 3 servos, toolholders the lot, hes risking it at £1000
03:27 PM fragalot: yeah looks like a good deal can be had there if you're in the market for one
03:27 PM gloops: i spent that on mine lol
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: there is some good TV scattered about, but it's only 1 or 2 things from each network
03:29 PM fragalot: that's optimistic
03:29 PM fragalot: here it's about 1 thing on about 2 networks
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: you get the point
03:29 PM fragalot: :P
03:29 PM fragalot: this is why the on-demand generation just waits a day & watches it on the networks' website (if available)
03:30 PM fragalot: all of the entertainment, without the 30% ads
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: yeah download later
03:30 PM Tom_L: they still put ads in them
03:30 PM Tom_L: and now they got it so you can't FF thru them
03:30 PM fragalot: Tom_L: ublock does a good job hiding those
03:31 PM CaptHindsight: well download from sources that edit the commercials out
03:31 PM Tom_L: oh i use that on the interweb
03:31 PM fragalot: at least here & on southpark studios & YT
03:31 PM Tom_L: i thought you meant recorded shows
03:31 PM fragalot: I don't bother with recordings anymore
03:31 PM fragalot: not in the past 4 or 5 years now
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: dumbing everyone down works pretty well, people pretty much watch whatever you put in front of them
03:35 PM fragalot: easier than religion too
03:35 PM fragalot: to keep people in line
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: and if you're too busy working 12+ hours a day then you don't have much time to watch or rebel
03:36 PM gloops: watched Bird Box, got to the end of that
03:36 PM jdh: wtf is it anyway
03:36 PM gloops: Bird Box ?
03:37 PM jdh: movie, series, game?
03:37 PM gloops: oh its a film
03:37 PM jdh: I see headlines about it, but no info
03:37 PM gloops: some strange alien or supernatural phenomena takes over earth
03:37 PM jdh: orange, bad hair?
03:38 PM fragalot: gloops: https://imgur.com/gallery/9S9G9yw
03:38 PM gloops: you dont see it, only people who look at it are affected
03:38 PM fragalot: gloops: what if you look at a picture of it?
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/bird_box
03:38 PM gloops: someone does draw pics of 'it' actually
03:39 PM gloops: lunatics arent affected by seeing it
03:39 PM fragalot: just curious if you could just get a fatshark FPV set to get around the whole issue
03:40 PM gloops: Critics Consensus: Bird Box never quite reaches its intriguing potential < thats about right, interesting idea but youre kinda waiting for a climax that doesnt arrive
03:42 PM gloops: fragalot ill not give any more spoilers out
03:42 PM fragalot: alright. haven't seen it yet myself but the whole premise is a bit 'meh'
03:44 PM gloops: it is pretty ludicrous really, but it is made in a - you have to keep watching way
03:48 PM gloops: how do you get a laser to on/off with linuxcnc?
03:49 PM gloops: looking at a small 5w laser to engrave box lids, i never thought about g-code
03:57 PM Tom_L: remap coolant?
03:58 PM Tom_L: or just wire it as coolant
03:58 PM Tom_L: how do they do torch on/off on plasma?
04:00 PM CaptHindsight: you can use an m-code
04:02 PM gloops: ah yeah
04:02 PM gloops: you would need software for laser engraving i guess, too much for hand coding
04:02 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/EAF5oPj.jpg the m-codes are not quite matched to motion here
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gcode/m-code.html#mcode:m62-m65
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: M62 and M63
04:03 PM gloops: you can touch the gaps in with a black pen lol
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: if you sync it then there are no gaps or heavy spots
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: same with a laser, but the airbrush really magnifys the issue
04:04 PM Deejay: gn8
04:05 PM CaptHindsight: magnifies even
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: there are several LCNC videos and discussions over it
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: plasma cutting is a bit different since if you dwell too long you really don't make a larger hole
04:07 PM gloops: oh thats an airbrush
04:08 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, it's not as fast ON/Off as a laser
04:08 PM gloops: i had a quick look at cnc painting - not really go there with that yet
04:08 PM gloops: got
04:08 PM CaptHindsight: but you get the idea
04:08 PM gloops: yes
04:09 PM gloops: a really functional airbrush on cnc would be some tool
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3iS1ba0Z2I
04:15 PM gloops: hmm, maybe 15w would be better
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: CNC airbrush works where CNC inkjet can't reach, but at lower res
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eXu1hFaymI LASERs and M Codes
04:22 PM gloops: looks straightforward enough, so long as i didnt have to compile some kinky flavour of linux and make a hal module etc
04:22 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: got any links handy for building a linuxCNC based FDM 3D printer?
04:23 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: I'd like to make air intakes with it, so will need a plastic that will be good with temps up through about 300 degrees F
04:24 PM tiwake: air intake manifolds for cars
04:26 PM tiwake: or do I want to use something other than linuxCNC?
04:26 PM tiwake: (I kind of want to)
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: plastic intake manifolds?
04:30 PM MacGalempsy: hello
04:30 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: sure
04:31 PM MacGalempsy: happy new year guys
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: I'd use a thermoset vs a thermoplastic
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: happy happy joy joy
04:32 PM CaptHindsight: epoxy with metal filler like JB weld
04:32 PM MacGalempsy: making any cool tools lately, Capt?
04:32 PM Tom_L: let's get this year kicked off right with a guberment shutdown...
04:32 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4xX7VecgzA
04:32 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: are those more difficult to make?
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: MacGalempsy: not really, people don't want to fund much
04:33 PM MacGalempsy: how much funding for an sls printer?
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: FDM uses thermoplastics that may be remelted
04:34 PM tiwake: sure
04:34 PM CaptHindsight: MacGalempsy: there is some <$10k SLS from Poland out
04:34 PM MacGalempsy: is the finish quality good?
04:34 PM MacGalempsy: link?
04:36 PM MacGalempsy: actually, the SLA would be fine, but a metal sls would be awesome
04:36 PM CaptHindsight: https://all3dp.com/1/best-sls-3d-printer-desktop-industrial/
04:37 PM CaptHindsight: https://all3dp.com/1/best-sls-3d-printer-desktop-industrial/#sintratec-kit
04:37 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: so they would remelt if the engine area gets hot enough
04:37 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: so you'd have to use a suitable high temp thermoplastic or use a thermoset
04:38 PM CaptHindsight: thermosets don't remelt, they might get very slightly softer but just start to burn vs melt
04:38 PM MacGalempsy: anyone in the market for a Hansvedt 201E sinker EDM?
04:38 PM MacGalempsy: its ll
04:39 PM MacGalempsy: all on a trailer waiting for a home
04:40 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: car makers use a composite of thermoplastics and fiberglass
04:42 PM CaptHindsight: Nylon 6/6 with glass as well
04:43 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: high temp extruder and some secondary machining with thermoplastics
04:44 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: https://www.3d4makers.com/blogs/news/high-temperature-fdm-3d-printers-for-pei-peek-and-other-high-performance-polymers
04:44 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: but FDM/FFF is going to be really slow making an entire manifold
04:44 PM CaptHindsight: days per
04:46 PM CaptHindsight: but if you're making multiple of the same manifold I'd make molds and pour a thermoset
04:46 PM CaptHindsight: multiple but low volume say up to ~100
04:48 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: a few days to make one is no problem honestly, just the occasional one-off thing and maybe once again for a jealous friend
04:49 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: have a pic of an example manifold you're thinking of?
04:49 PM CaptHindsight: some are far more elaborate than others
04:51 PM CaptHindsight: FDM/FFF and SLA are very slow
04:52 PM CaptHindsight: sorry SLS not SLA
04:52 PM tiwake: looking
04:53 PM CaptHindsight: SLA can print a manifold in minutes, but there's patents on the fast techniques
04:53 PM tiwake: something like this http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/pwrdbypsi/media/bWVkaWFJZDoyODUyNTg3Mw==/?ref=
04:53 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: I don't need to worry about patents if I'm making it for me and not selling anything
04:57 PM CaptHindsight: just looking at how they made the molds for that
05:02 PM tiwake: yeah
05:03 PM CaptHindsight: look at top down SLA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-eSRdxjvD8
05:03 PM CaptHindsight: for example
05:03 PM tiwake: how much does liquid plastic cost though?
05:04 PM XXCoder: it doesnt even show result bah
05:04 PM tiwake: its like $50/liter or so right?
05:05 PM CaptHindsight: for stuff that just cures $25/L
05:05 PM CaptHindsight: resin for a intake manifold would be a bit more
05:06 PM XXCoder: it does get aged faster than filiment so you'd try best to use em up
05:06 PM XXCoder: it lasts couple years at most?
05:06 PM CaptHindsight: depends on how you store it
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: you should be using it vs storing it anyway :)
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: http://bucktownpolymers.com/ep200-v420.html
05:08 PM XXCoder: from what I understand even if stored away from light and in good temperate, its bit chemically instable
05:08 PM XXCoder: "It cures rapidly when exposed to ultraviolet light and visible light up to 440nm and offers nearly unlimited working time before exposure. "
05:08 PM XXCoder: I guess it depends on type
05:08 PM CaptHindsight: cool, dark and refresh the air
05:09 PM CaptHindsight: it's really a non issue
05:09 PM MacGalempsy: you guys see the Kickstarter phrozen transform?
05:12 PM tiwake: CaptHindsight: think I should use galvos? or just do boring steppers?
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: for what? moving what?
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: laser + galvos?
05:13 PM XXCoder: you could use galvos and laser as vector screen and play asteroids lol
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: it's much faster than moving a carriage around XY
05:13 PM tiwake: cheaper?
05:13 PM tiwake: don't I need an F-theta lens?
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: Chines galvos are getting really cheap
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: Chinese
05:13 PM tiwake: I remember looking those up and they were like $800 or something
05:14 PM XXCoder: its around $100 each nowdays
05:14 PM XXCoder: I wanted to play with vector screen
05:14 PM tiwake: for F-theta lens?
05:14 PM XXCoder: oh lens dunno
05:14 PM CaptHindsight: nah an f-theta for 405nm is cheap
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/405nm+galvo+head.html?fsb=y&IndexArea=product_en&CatId=&SearchText=405nm+galvo+head&isGalleryList=G
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: a stepper XY gantry will be cheaper and much much slower
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: stepper and belts
05:17 PM XXCoder: dang 405nm is crazy cheao
05:18 PM tiwake: hmm
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: yeah price is dropping like rocks
05:19 PM XXCoder: im not sure if I belive the $1 ones
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: it's China
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: like our orange leader
05:19 PM XXCoder: yeah but theres $800 ones and $1
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: what's to believe?
05:20 PM XXCoder: other one len only is $100
05:20 PM CaptHindsight: like the $1 cars and everything on Craigslist just to get your attention
05:22 PM tiwake: got links for laser+lens I want for something that big?
05:22 PM tiwake: I do have a set of chinese galvos already
05:23 PM XXCoder: aliexpress has a wtf error
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: tiwake: you can also mount the laser and galvo on a carriage
